President Granger meets OP staff – urges professionalism ADDRESSING staffers at the Presidential Complex yesterday, President David Granger, two days after taking office, reminded employees that the entity is a very important branch of the public service and the hub of Government, hence it is very important that it functions efficiently. “You’re all professionals, and I am not going to enquire into your political leads, I am not going to enquire into your

business leads, I don’t know if you belong to the lodge, I don’t want to know if you put your head in a turban, (or) burn candles at night. When you come in to work, I want you to understand you’re serving the people of Guyana without fear or favour, affection or ill will,” the Head of State said. He reminded them of the oath he took on May 16 when he became President, saying, “I am not

being sworn in as leader of APNU/AFC, I am being sworn in as President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. If I could have a public conscience, or public vision, or public sense of vision, I would expect all of you to have that vision”. He pointed to the fact that while everyone is biased, the degree of their professionalism is determined by their ability to suppress that bias. In whatever field per-

President Granger seeking to further strengthen bilateral ties with immediate neighbours

HIGH on the agenda of His Excellency David Granger and his soon-to-be-sworn in Administration will be to accelerate infrastructural and economic developments with CARICOM and Guyana’s other immediate neighbours. During his first official day in Office as Guyana’s 8th Executive President, Brigadier Ret’d Granger held brief meetings with the CARICOM Secretary General, Irwin LaRocque. According to President Granger, his meeting with Mr. LaRocque was a deliberate decision he made, as he noted the importance of meeting with Guyana’s most important neighbours. “It was a deliberate decision of mine that we should meet with our most important neighbours first and CARICOM is at the heart of the economic development of Guyana; and in terms of not only courtesy, but also in terms of policy (and) I felt it was my duty to meet with our Caribbean neighbours first.” The Head-of-State, at the Office of the President, also met with Brazil’s Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Mr. Lineu Pupo de Paula; and Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana, Her Excellency Reina Margarita Arratia Diaz. Speaking of his meeting with the Brazilian Ambassador,

President Granger alluded to the fact that the two countries have always had cordial relations and his administration will be working to strengthen those ties. “…We would like to accelerate the pace of some of the projects, particularly for infrastructure and other economic ones; I’ve already discussed with Carl Greenidge, who has been identified as the Foreign Minister, to place extraordinary importance on economic relations.” Brazil, which has the longest land frontier to Guyana, President Granger pointed out, is also a member of the Brazil, Russia, India and China group (BRIC), and has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Meanwhile, issues discussed during the President’s meeting with the Venezuela Ambassador include the continuation of the Good Officer Process, that speaks directly to the dealings of territorial matters. According to President Granger, the Good Officer process forms part of the menu of measures prescribed by the Charter of the United Nations and is very important to both countries. “As you know, Venezuela is an important neighbour, and in terms of Petro Caribe, the economic importance of Petro

Caribe, as well as other strategic dimensions of Guyana/Venezuela relations.” Summing up the three meetings, President Granger said that they were all extremely important in terms of foreign policies and moreso the internal economic vision and policy of his Administration. Yesterday’s meeting, for the CARICOM Secretary General, was seen as a very strong signal of Guyana’s commitment to CARICOM’s integration arrangement and to the brotherhood of Caribbean civilisation. Considering it a great honour to have met with the President on his first day in Office, Mr. La Rocque said the discussion was centred on Guyana’s role in CARICOM and about the integration arrangement. Like the Brazilian Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Lineu Pupo de Paula, La Rocque said he is looking forward to working with President Granger and his Administration. By Gary Eleazar HEAD of State Brigadier (rtd) David Granger is in the concluding stages of finalising his Cabinet Council of Ministers and has announced the creation of a new Ministry, naming Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Lieutenant Colonel (rtd) Joseph Harmon as Minister of State. The announcement came yesterday when President Granger met with staffers at Office of the President. He has proposed to have the Office encompassing a ‘Ministry of the Presidency.’ And it will be headed by Harmon. On his re-entrance to the National Assembly, in the 11th Parliament, Harmon will be designated Minister of State, and as such will be Head and hold the portfolio as Minister in charge of the Ministry of the Presidency.

“some will remain, but the most important thing is that we ensure there is no disruption, simple… Comrade Harmon will be doing the job that Dr. (Roger) Luncheon did, with some exceptions, he won’t be doing NIS, but as far as OP is concerned, he is Minister in charge.” Ministers will not be officially sworn in until they are first administered the Oath of Office as Members of Parliament. HPS Harmon yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that President Granger is looking to having the Parliament convened as early as the first week in next month, at which time the Ministers can be sworn in.

He managed to confirm too that former Finance Minister Carl Greenidge has been identified as the person to hold the Ministerial Portfolio in Charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while former Budget Director, Winston Jordon, has been identified as the next Finance Minister. According to Harmon, as the administration prepares for the 11th Parliament, work has already been commenced by Jordon, who will be working along with the team from the Budget Office of the Ministry of Finance on the National Estimates for 2015. cated that former Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has indicated a willingness to work along with the team in preparing and finalising the national estimates. HPS Harmon assured that, the preparation process will fully embrace the concept of consultation. On the matter of the Ministerial portfolios, HPS Harmon said too that Ronald Bulkan will be taking up the portfolio as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development. Asked about the Ministry of Home Affairs, HPS Harmon told the Guyana Chronicle this portfolio will be one held by the Alliance For Change (AFC) arm of the coalition for which a nomination had not yet been finalised. Harmon said the coalesced A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and AFC Government will be looking to have between 14 and 16 Ministries. Under the Cummingsburg Accord, the AFC is guaranteed 40 per cent of the Ministerial portfolios, including that of Home Affairs. to the HPS Harmon, will be appointed Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General. Meanwhile, the Government’s transition team, also headed by HPS and Minister of State Harmon, met with their predecessors in a move aimed at the smooth changeover of government, governance and Executive Power. The Government team also includes, Messrs Carl Greenidge, Nigel Hughes, Raphael Trotman, Noel Holder, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Basil Williams and Amna Ally, among other persons. The Opposition PPP/C delegation is headed by Dr Roger Luncheon and includes Former Presidential Advisor on Governance, Gail Teixeira; and Former Ministers Priya Manickchand and Bishop Juan Edgehill. Teixeira told the Guyana Chronicle last evening that the PPP/C team is cooperating with the new Government, is respectful, and maintains, “We have nothing to hide.” President Granger is scheduled to meet tomorrow with all Permanent Secretaries currently attached to the various ministries at the Guyana International Conference Centre.

Colombia landslide kills dozens in Antioquia province

Residents say the landslide destroyed houses built in vulnerable areas along the local river

(BBC News) AT least 48 people have been killed in a landslide in Antioquia province in north-west Colombia, officials say. Bodies are still being recovered and the authorities expect the number of fatalities to rise. Heavy rains caused the river Liboriana, in the town of Salgar, to burst its banks, triggering the landslide. Much of the village of Santa Margarita, south-west of the provincial capital, Medellin, was reportedly swept away when the landslide hit early on Monday. The authorities say 28 people are injured and 30

families have been affected. ‘Frightened but alive’ Antioquia Governor Sergio Fajardo tweeted that it was a “tragedy” and “that all emergency teams have been scrambled”. Local official Zulma Osorio spoke of a “tragedy of enormous proportions” and asked for firefighters and first response teams to be sent from surrounding areas. Mud, rocks and tree trunks destroyed many houses in poor neighbourhoods close to the river. Resident Jorge Quintero described his ordeal when the landslide hit the village: “When I felt my house shak-

ing we got out, my family and I. When we got out, we were stuck in the middle of the landslide, it was coming from both sides and we were in the middle. “I said to my wife, let’s hold each other and hope that God saves us and I know he gave us his hand because here we are, alive, still frightened, but still alive”. President Juan Manuel Santos and Mr Fajardo are travelling to Salgar to assess the damage. The Colombian Air Force and police have sent helicopters to the area with rescue experts and sniffer dogs.

St Lucia launches investigation return even though they do into visa scandal not qualify for repatriation CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) – THE St Lucia Government Monday announced that it had launched an investigation into international media reports that a group of Cubans trying to sail to the United States had St Lucia tourist visas when they were intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard. A brief government statement said that an investigation has been launched into the matter “to determine how the alleged visas appeared in the passports of the Cuban nationals, since Cuban nationals do not require tourist visas to visit St Lucia. “The Government of Saint Lucia is in touch with the Cuban and American authorities on this matter,” the statement said. Over the weekend, the Associated Press reported that 38 Cuban migrants, who had been stuck in a legal limbo aboard a US Coast Guard ship

after they were detained at sea, are being allowed to return to their homeland. They were among nearly 100 detained by the Coast Guard in April and who would ordinarily have been quickly repatriated under an agreement between the US and Cuba intended to discourage risky sea journeys by people seeking to reach the United States. But a US official said Cuban authorities had balked at accepting the 38 migrants, arguing they did not qualify as migrants in transit who should be immediately repatriated because they had legally left their country and obtained tourist visas from St Lucia. The migrants were held on board the Coast Guard cutter Vigilant until the situation could be resolved. A statement issued by the Cuban Interests Section in Washington said Cuba’s Government notified the US it would allow the migrants to

Meanwhile, the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) is calling on the St lucia Government to explain how the Cubans were in possession of the visas. “‘The UWP would like to find out who issued those visas to the Cubans, for what purpose were they issued and for what period of time. ‘It is vital that an urgent explanation is provided by Government so St Lucia whose name was sullied by the ongoing Lambirds investigation involving allegations of human trafficking, can be cleared,” said UWP communications manager Lionell Ellis. Police are investigating how a group of Nepalese students were left stranded here after allegedly paying thousands of dollars to secure their education at the Lambirds School at Gros-Islet, north of here.

EBC puts its house in order (BBC News) PRIME MINISTER Kamla Persad-Bissessar is yet to announce the date for the 2015 general election, but the Elections and Boundaries Commission has started putting its house in order. The commission has started recruiting staff for election day and is hoping to hire 14,000 personnel. Speculation is rife that the Prime Minister will announce the eagerly awaited election date on May 24 when the People’s Partnership holds its grand fifth anniversary celebrations at Constantine Park, Macoya. Several dates are being bandied about in political circles, among them September 7 and September 14. Ye s t e r d a y, D o m i n i c Hinds, EBC’s corporate communications manager, confirmed that the commission has begun training its internal staff in preparation for the election bell’s tolling. This week, the EBC published advertisements calling on citizens interested in working for election

day to collect application forms for polling day staff positions, which include presiding officers, returning officers and clerks. Hinds, in an email to the Sunday Guardian, said “the procedure is a normal practice conducted by EBC prior to any elections.” He said the EBC expected to have approximately 14,000 people assigned to

the various polling stations throughout the country on polling day. “Preceding this, though, persons will have to undergo a series of training (about five days) and then complete an assessment examination. Thereafter the final selection of polling day staff will be determined,” he said. The EBC, he said, had not been informed of the election date, but was putting procedures in place for the proroguing of Parliament on June 17. After that, the Government has 90 days to call an election and the EBC, Hinds said, required a minimum of 35 days for the preparation of any election. Hinds also said the redesign of the EBC’s new website, which will be an interactive platform with the capability to deliver real-time election day results, would be ready in the next couple of weeks. “ We a r e p r e s e n t l y working on its final phase with the developers,” Hinds added.

CDA names child abuse hot spots (Jamaica Gleaner) THE parish of Westmoreland in western Jamaica has the highest number of child abuse cases in the island, with 500 active cases up to yesterday. The Child Development Agency’s (CDA’s) Rosalee Gage-Grey made the disclosure yesterday at the end of a march to lobby for greater protection of the nation’s children from abuse. “Reports that we get we see what we call ‘hot spots’ such as Westmoreland. The whole belt from just near Savana-La- Mar, Negril, going back to Green Island, Hanover is a hot spot. We see right now in Westmoreland alone 500 active cases of reports that are being investigated. Other hot spots to which Gage Grey pointed were St Ann; May Pen and hilly areas of Clarendon; Kingston and St Andrew; and St Thomas. In the case of the latter, Gage-Grey said the incidence was under reported, as the number of reports do not match the cases on the ground. “The cases that are reported to us are growing daily. We get about 200 cases per week. This is stretching

us, but we are not broken because we are committed to the task of finding every one of those children and more importantly, we are committed to finding all those men and women who continue to abuse our children,” she said. The march, which began and ended at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston was organised by Dr Michael Abrahams, founder of Protect Our Children. He told the Jamaica Observer that yesterday’s event was part of a movement to create public awareness about the gravity of issues involving children, and to raise money for the effort. “ When I was going to do the march people asked a very pertinent question, ‘What use is a march any way?’ It has a lot of usage; there was a march on Friday and a good friend of mine was speaking into the PA system he kept on saying ‘report child abuse’. An about a hour later there was a man out there saying that he knows a 13-year-old who is being abused. What do I do about it? I didn’t know until this week that the number is 188- protect,” he related. Scores of Jamaicans

from several organisations participated in the march, bearing placards and demanding an end to the abuse of the nation’s children. Cases of child abuse, particulalrly murder and sexual abuse, appear to be on the increase recently. So much so that it dominated Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller’s address for Child Month which was broadcast last night. “(Children) embody the present and represent the future. For me, children are the precious jewels of the nation; a valuable resource that must be cherished and protected. Children must be loved, cared for and nurtured,” Simpson Miller said. “Yet, it is with a deep sense of concern and sadness that I take note of the recent cases of abuse and crimes against our children. These horrendous acts against our children, including murder, are unacceptable.The brutal killing of our children is a vile and dreadful occurrence that is alien to our culture.” The prime minister said she was also concerned about instances of parental neglect as children who are neglected are exposed to violence, sexual abuse and murder.

Protecting the innocent YAHOO reports that a 10-year-old girl in Paraguay was reportedly sexually abused by her stepfather for years, with the appeal to the authorities for help being completely ignored. She is now pregnant and being denied the right to abort the fetus, so she is appealing for help from the international community. According to the report every day in Paraguay, two girls between the ages of 10 and 14, give birth to children conceived as a result of rape. The writer contends that the law could give access to abortion in these cases but Paraguayan government officials refuse to allow it. Now the tragic case of this 10-year-old girl has dropped a global media bombshell that is forcing them to reconsider. Avaaz.org is a 41-million-person global campaign network that works to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people shape global de-

cision-making. (‘Avaaz’ means ‘voice’ or ‘song’ in many languages.) Avaaz members live in every nation of the world, with a team spread across 18 countries on 6 continents operating in 17 languages. The Avaaz community went on a blitz on social media that catalysed a decision by the Paraguayan Congress to review this law and open up discussion to citizens. This is the chance to change everything for this 10-year-old and ensure that no young girl has to fight this battle again. Article 109 Paraguay’s Penal Code allows for the termination of pregnancy where it puts the life of the mother in danger. The Paraguayan Health Minister has refused to apply this law to children, even though the World Health Organisation clearly categorises child pregnancies as dangerous and potentially life threatening. Girls under 15 are 5 times more

likely to die of birth complications than older teens and women. The UN has chastised Paraguay for its denial of an abortion, which it states, inter alia, “… results in grave violations of the rights to life, to health and to the physical and mental integrity of the girl”. The 10-year-old child is reportedly so small that even pregnant, she weighs just 34 kg. She had sought help from her stepfather’s abuse, but when she reported it in January of 2014 the authorities did not act and she was forced to continue living with him. The writer noted, “This girl didn’t have a choice in being attacked by her stepfather. She didn’t have a choice about living day in and out with her rapist. She didn’t have a choice in getting pregnant. But if the government applies the law, she should have a choice over what happens next with her own body. And at this stage, that is

the least of what should be done for her.” The rights of children are violated every millimeter of a second every day throughout the world; and while one can argue there are degrees of suffering it is unconscionable that in a modern world children can still suffer at the hands of perverts and predators of the society, most of whom escape being penalised for their cruelty to the innocent children whose lives they have almost always destroyed with their bestial actions. UNICEF’s Convention on the Rights of the Child is reportedly the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. The Convention changed the way children are viewed and treated – i.e., as human beings with a distinct set of rights instead of as passive objects of care and charity. The unprecedented acceptance of the Convention

clearly shows a wide global commitment to advancing children’s rights. With its 25th anniversary UNICEF also celebrated the declining infant mortality to rising school enrolment, but the organisation stressed that this historic milestone must also serve as an urgent reminder that much remains to be done. Too many children still do not enjoy their full rights on par with their peers. Noting that business as usual is not enough to make the vision of the Convention a reality for all children, UNICEF urged world leaders to pursue new ideas and approaches to treat with this global dilemma. Guyana has experienced its fair share of child abuse – reported and unreported, and there is urgent need for enforcement of the

laws governing child rights in the nation. However, children are vulnerable to many variables in their individual circumstances, not least being fear of the predators and their ability to communicate their distress to a receptive and accommodating authority figure who would be prepared to go that extra mile to extricate the victim from her/his peculiar situation and secure protection and help so that the abuse is discontinued and the perpetrator is prosecuted. Unless and until there is a holistic approach, including community involvement, to treating with this scourge in society, our children would always be at risk of every kind of abuse, often at the hands of those who should be their foremost protector.

Beware the ‘Hoppertunists’

A ‘hoppertunist’ is someone who hops – like a grasshopper – from plane to plane scavenging for opportunities. A hoppertunist shamelessly defends the untenable just for gain. A hoppertunist pounces on every opportunity – one day against you and the next day for you, depending on which position suits his greed best. ‘Hoppertunist’ is a portmanteau word derived from ‘hopper’ and ‘opportunist.’ The coinage of this word has its origin in this very

letter, and this word will be patented by this publication. The worst hoppertunists are those who posture as preachers of the gospel and impugn the character of Christianity by their flagrant collusion with evil just for some connections, cash and contracts. I’ll take them one at a time. This letter is devoted to the owner of a Public Relations consultancy (name withheld). The owner of this consultancy enjoyed swallowing up all the multi-million-dollar public

relations and communications contracts while the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) regime was in Government. His greed is so insatiable; this ‘pastor’ discouraged and suppressed the emergence of any similar consultancy just to enjoy monopoly. One of (name withheld) this person’s most reprehensible deeds in recent memory was his use of the images of children to create a public relations campaign to wash the image of former Attorney General and Min-

ister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall on the aftermath of the notorious recorded conversation in which Nandlall threatened to unleash mass murder at Kaieteur News. Persons like the owner of this Consultancy firm bring the name of Christ and Christianity into disrepute. Their obsession with money and earthly possessions is antithetical to the teachings of Christianity. This person even attended elections campaigns and rallies with the PPP/C and must, no doubt, have said

things to discredit the APNU+AFC coalition. How a man can preach integrity, righteousness, transparency, equity and godliness and still be mired in the opposite is incomprehensible; how he manages to keep a church membership and congregation is mindboggling. Hoppertunists are so patently greedy, they possess the forest, yet they grab for a seedling; they snatch at the raindrop though they own the ocean. Now that the PPP/C is ousted from Govern-

ment, (this public relations consultant) - if he has not already begun courting the APNU+AFC coalition Government – will now jump ship and grab at the opportunities to be had from the Granger Administration. Five bodies recovered from Mowasi mining pit disaster THE bodies of five men who, up to late last evening, were still not identified, were brought to the city following a disaster at Mowasi, Konawaruk, North West District on Sunday, when a

mining pit caved in and buried ten persons. The Guyana Chronicle has been informed that while the five bodies were being transported to the city, other miners continued their efforts trying to

that henceforth Indian Guyanese will not be viewed by African Guyanese as being inferior objects deserving to be hated and despised; that snide remarks and “coolie jokes” will no longer have a place in the amusing activities of African Guyanese; that Indian Guyanese will no longer be subject to systematic bullying and threats by

African Guyanese; and that the tenor of African-Indian personal and day-to-day interactions will evince a noticeable increase in harmony. If this transformation in our African Guyanese and Indian Guyanese relations fails to materialise, then I would have to conclude that Moses Nagamootoo and all the oth-

President Granger reaffirms no tolerance for ethnic divisions By Shirley Thomas PUBLICLY affirming that he does not tolerate ethnic divisions, President David Granger has said he wishes to assure people of all ethnicities that he would be a President of all the people. The President made this declaration immediately after he was sworn in as President of Guyana last Saturday, and he candidly reiterated his statement yesterday as he answered questions in an interview on the ‘Wake Up Guyana’ programme on Channel Nine Television. A woman of Indian ethnicity called in to the programme expressing fear that she would be discriminated against by persons of the APNU/AFC coalition on the basis of her race. The moderator, Basil Bradshaw, asked the President to state how he would allay such fears that persons were harbouring, and President Granger made it clear that throughout his campaign he had stated categorically that what was needed was national unity, and that he would truly form a Government for all the people. “Our party - the APNU and AFC - did not wage a dirty campaign. We waged a clean campaign; and we felt that, because of the nature of our campaign, we were appealing to the entire nation that APNU will need national unity,” President Granger said. He said the coalition avoided racial incidents and comments at all times, adding: “But it was Mr Bharrat Jagdeo who kept injecting poison into the atmosphere. And if you look

from the time he came in, the tone of the campaign changed.” To substantiate his claims, the President recalled there was a flier on a PPP letter-head stating that the Demerara River would run ‘red with blood’ if Granger is elected President. “And then there was a poster showing me (Granger) in uniform sitting next to Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein, also in uniform. So the imagery was clear,” he said. Further, the President Granger recalled that Mr. Jagdeo started attacking former military officers even though the Government of Guyana is the biggest employer of former military officers. President Granger also cited one particular instance in which Dr. Jagdeo had to be called up for making an ethnically insensitive comment at Babu Jaan. “So,” he said, “what I am saying is that the Elections, for me, were not about ethnicity and the APNU/AFC Government.” He reiterated the stance he had adopted on the campaign trail -- that he would be President of all the people. “I’m not a PNC President; I’m not an APNU President. I’m the Guyana President, and I know Guyana is made up of Africans – yes, it’s also made up of Amerindians, Chinese, Portuguese and lots of mixed people!” Allaying the fears of those who thought otherwise, President Granger declared: “I am a governor or a ruler; president, manager or administrator of a nation where people’s ethnic origin or their religious beliefs are respected; their occupations are respected; their residence is respected; and that is what I would like to bring to Guyana!”

APNU+AFC 100-day plan will be delivered - Harmon

ASSIGNED Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Joseph Harmon, said the APNU+AFC overall 100-day plan has to do with commitment and confidence building. “It has to do with the confidence we have in national institutions. It has to do with the mobilisation and the engagement of the people in the process of decision making,” Harmon told the National Communications Network (NCN) Inc. yesterday. He explained that the cane farmers and rice farmers’ conferences were “all about getting the issues that do affect the industry from the bottom up, getting the actual people who have to do the planting, who have to do Mr Joseph Harmon, the repairing and reaping, involved in the Head of the Presidential Secretariat decision-making of the industry. Mr Harmon said these persons’ views are often ignored or disregarded by the people at the top. “The people who actually toil in the sun and the rain on a daily basis, their views are not taken into consideration,” he explained. This is why the APNU+AFC has, as part of its 100-day plan, these conferences, as well as such tasks as the de-politicising of the National Toshaos Conference. “We are going to remove the political element out of it. What you will get is genuine decision-making for Amerindian communities, the rice farmers and cane farmers,” he explained. Harmon said these plans are not “pies in the sky”, but are things that the party has genuinely considered and feel it can achieve. The new APNU+AFC Administration, as part of its immediate plans, will seek to reduce the Berbice Bridge toll, significantly increase salary for public servants, implement a phased reduction of VAT, remove VAT from food and other essential items, set the date for the early holding of Local Government Elections, establish the Public Procurement Commission, call a National Cane Workers and Cane Farmers Conference, arrange a National Rice Farmers and Rice Millers Conference, set up an Investigative Commission on Corruption, Task Forces on Crime & Security and on Road Safety, a National Conference for Women, and a bi-partisan Women’s Working Group.

APNU+AFC leader being ‘disingenuous’ – says Ramotar

OFFERS for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) to form a national unity Government were not made as is being claimed, according to its leader Mr Donald Ramotar. Reports from local media outlets have reported that the new Head of State, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, made the offer during a telephone conversation last Friday. Mr Granger is reported to have expressed his disappointment that Mr Ramotar has not accepted his offer for close working relations. “Guyana has turned the corner. It will be better Government…we are not in the business of winner takes all and locking people out. I would like a Government of all the people and that is why I would like to ask former President Ramotar to reconsider his position,” Granger was quoted by an online site as saying. However, the PPP/C leader, when contacted by the Chronicle, noted that this was not so and contends that Mr Granger is being ‘disingenuous’ in asserting any other position. “We had no discussions on forming a national unity Government. I never had any such conversation with Mr Granger. We did, indeed, speak last Friday, but in that conversation I was speaking to him about the provocation, attacks, insults and triumphalism being directed to PPP supporters,” Mr Ramotar said. He maintains his contention that the APNU+AFC Government do not reflect the will of the Guyanese people, taking into consideration that the PPP/C views the electoral processes as “severely” compromised. The PPP/C leader highlighted that Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) by its constitutional mandate and the electoral observer missions have made pronouncements on the elections without taking into account the real concerns that have been brought to their attention by the Party. The PPP/C, Mr Ramotar added, is finalising its move to courts to advance its case.

Brian Joseph now heads Presidential Guard Service

ASSISTANT Police Commissioner (ACP) Brian Joseph yesterday officially took over the helm of the Presidential Guard Service, which is responsible for the security detail of the President and Prime Minister. Mr Joseph who, prior to 1994 had provided protection for Presidents Forbes Burnham, Desmond Hoyte and Cheddi Jagan respectively, will be replacing Mr Rohan Singh. Serving as the ‘B’ Division Commander for some time following a transfer from the Traffic Department, Joseph spent most of the day going through the handover/takeover process with Singh. Immediately after his swearing in on Saturday, President Granger held a meeting with Head of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Mark Phillips, and Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud. Yesterday, ACP Brian Joseph met with Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and was told of his new posting, which took immediate effect. With Joseph assuming the Head of the Presidential Guard Service, a void has been created in the hierarchy of the GPF, since Divisions A, B and C are usually controlled by Assistant Commissioners of Police. GTA urges all tourism-related businesses to comply with regulations or face consequences THE Tourism Ministry and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) have thus far accredited a number of entities under the Tourism Regulations, and have since launched a campaign to have businesses registered and licensed. The latest entity to adhere to the said regulation is the Old Fort Tours and Island Resort. Camille Boodhoo, representing the entity, noted that they are renowned and reputable in Parika, on the East Bank of Essequibo, and presently offer travel and tour operation services. GTA Director, Indranauth Haralsingh, urged the company to continue to maintain the good work, and to strive for excellence in its operations. He urged unregistered tourism businesses to register and become licensed with the GTA, and emphasised the countless benefits that can be derived from so doing. Old Fort Tours and Island Resort is the fourth tour operator to attain this licensed status. The others are Wilderness Explorers, Roraima Tours, and Bushmasters. The Tourism Regulations serve as a framework by which operators should abide. It has the objective of improving competitiveness, thus strengthening Guyana’s Tourism Product. Bushmasters Tours was the third tour operator to receive certification; Roraima Tours and Wilderness Explorers had previously achieved this important milestone, while Rock View Lodge and Eco Tourism Resort was presented with its license under the Interior Lodges and Resort category, and the Princess Hotel and City Inn were granted licenses under the Tourism Accommodation category. Mr. Haralsingh explained that all tourism businesses should follow the example set by the entities which have been licensed to date, and to commit to the process. He reiterated that, in an effort to prepare local businesses to become more competitive, the Tourism Ministry and the GTA are striving to ensure that these establishments meet the necessary require-

ments expected by any tourist or visitor, whether foreign or local, to any one of those facilities. He said, “This is in no way a difficult process, but it is a process that requires commitment. We want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on this achievement, and for following through with the process. This is a significant achievement, and should set the precedent for other businesses.” Haralsingh was adamant that, with growth in the tourism sector, conformity to set standards and regulations should be the focus of tourism establishments, even as they employ the best marketing and promotional strategies. He adumbrated some of the benefits to be derived from achieving 100% compliance, and noted that the GTA would be highlighting compliant businesses in a listing on its website. “This will determine who gets support in terms of both local and international exposure,” he explained. “The GTA Act and these regulations say that you need a license to operate any one of these businesses. We will not want our visitors to have a tourism experience with an unregistered and unlicensed business”, he emphasised. After a period set aside for conformity, GTA will then embark on a series of activities to have persons yet again conform with the guidelines. If by then persons do not comply with the regulations, they will then face the consequences. “Would you like to go to an entity that does not conform to the regulations, and have complaints; and then, when reported to GTA, we cannot sanction anything?” he asked as he explained that, in this regard, “We cannot do anything because the entity does not comply with standards set out by us.” The GTA, Haralsingh said, will continue to monitor and evaluate hospitality institutions across the country in its effort to ensure that the Tourism Industry in Guyana continues to grow and expand. He pleaded not guilty to the charge alleging that on May 15, on Motor Vessel Alexander AL in the Demerara River, without lawful authority, he had in his possession one US$100

Attorney-at-law Mr. Dexter Todd, representing Christopher, told the court that, for more than four years, his client has been transporting sand and cement to Caribbean countries. He added that the businessman usually purchases US dollars before he does the transportation, and on the day in question, the ship left for Grenada and he had over US$4,000 in his possession. He noted that his client had no intention to use

the money to indulge in any illegal activity. Police prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves did not oppose bail, but asked that Christopher be placed on a reporting condition. Opposition PPP/C presses ahead with dossier to file elections petition

THE People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), now in the political Opposition, says it has collected -- and will continue to collect -- further evidence to file an elections petition in relation to its allegation of wide-scale rigging at the recently concluded General and Regional Elections. The Donald Ramotar-led Administration was, this past week, ousted by the coalesced A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC), led by now elected Head of State, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger. The PPP/C, in a public missive yesterday, said it remains resolute in preparing its dossier as it forges ahead in filing its election petition. The PPP/C has alleged collusion on the part of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). The Opposition party yesterday sought to remind that, prior to the May 11th General and Regional Elections, it raised concerns both publicly and privately with the GECOM Chairman, Commission and Secretariat, the advance assessment teams of the UN, Commonwealth and the Carter Centre, the diplomatic community, and subsequently with the interna-

tional observer missions with regard to the partiality of the GECOM machinery. The party maintains the recruitment of polling staff connected to the APNU+AFC coalition was known, and said the PPP/C consistently raised its concerns publicly, months before, during the recruitment and training periods. It said, “Fears were also expressed about the removal of the foreign IT (Information Technology) Specialist at a critical time, just two weeks before the Ousted President elections; and the denial of reDonald Ramotar quests for public disclosures of of the PPP/C GECOM Elections Day staff.” The PPP/C argues that this lack of transparency and unwillingness to enhance public trust and confidence by

GECOM in the face of blatant infiltration of the machinery by known APNU+AFC activists is an indictment. The PPP/C says its public positions were supported with conclusive evidence that a number of irregularities were carried out on elections day and the period immediately thereafter, particularly in regard to multiple voting and creation of fraudulent and fictitious Statements of Poll, among other transgressions, to such an extent that any government formed on the basis of declared results would not reflect the will of the people of Guyana. “Our position remains the same today in the face of the refusal of GECOM to conduct the recount of a close-finish race; the PPP/C considers the APNU-AFC Government as de facto coming in on fraudulent elections.” GECOM has declared that the 2015 General Elections were free and fair, and that any discrepancies that had been raised and investigated could not have affected the outcome of the tabulation of the votes. CONSUMER Guyanese in St. Kitts and CONCERNS Nevis celebrate APNU+AFC By PAT DIAL

THIS column was first begun by the late Eileen Cox of revered memory who wrote it for several decades. Ms Cox died several months ago at nearly 100 years of age. Despite her waning physical strength, her mental faculties remained as powerful and intact as ever and she was involved in the affairs of both the Guyana Consumers Association and the Consumers Advisory Bureau until the end. Eileen Cox’s remarkable mental powers and her resilience were often attributed to her great love of ordinary people, her Nationalism and to the fact that she was a very strict vegetarian, she meditated as a regular discipline and she regarded herself as a chela (student) of Paramhamsa Yogananda, whose ashram is in California. She was cremated with a Hindu priest officiating. Eileen Cox was the greatest consumer advocate Guyana has produced and she stood out internationally as a colossus in world consumerism. Through President of the Guyana Consumers Association, we continue this column as a tribute to her memory and to try to walk in her footsteps and address consumer concerns as she did. This column would be presented once per week and we intend to keep it short and readable and to consider no more than one or two concerns at a time. CELL PHONE CHARGES This week, we would be touching on an aspect of cellular phone charges: The Public Utility Commission has ruled that in making a call, a cellular phone would have to ring eight times before voice-mail comes on and a consumer is charged for a one-minute call. If the voice-mail comes on before the eighth ring or if the consumer hangs up at any time before the eighth ring, then he should not be billed for a minute’s usage. This ruling applies to both telephone utilities. Consumers have complained to us that they are often billed for one-minute calls when voice-mail comes on before the eighth ring or when they would have hung up before the eighth ring. Though the total monthly charges for such wrongly-billed one-minute calls may be small, when they are accumulated over a period, they amount to a fair sum. In any case, the telephone companies, by this method, garner in an unfair profit of several million dollars from the consumers. Whenever this happens, consumers should complain directly to the telephone company involved and require their refund. Or they may contact the Guyana Consumers Association at patdial26 @ gmail.com.

PRESIDING Officer June Ann Gibbs, who operated at the St Thomas Moore Nursery School in D’Urban Street, Georgetown on Elections Day, has expressed great distress at false information being peddled mainly online aimed at tarnishing the work of GECOM, and her reputation. People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) List of Candidate member Charles Ramson Jnr alleged, last Friday, that there was collusion on the part of GECOM in tabulating votes at the recent General and Regional Elections. He added that the party’s concern is that GECOM was infiltrated, despite assurances that this was not going to happen. Ramson went on to brandish a document with Gibbs and the APNU+AFC Leader David Granger in a bid to support his claim of infiltration; but a calm and reassuring Gibbs told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that the photograph with the now

President of Guyana was taken at a picnic on Easter Day and the suggestion that she is an APNU+AFC activist is far from true and is very disturbing. The soft-spoken teacher related that, had it not been for her profession and the many persons whom she knows and who hold her in high esteem, she would have stayed silent and let the matter die a natural death. But, she said, the claims are damaging to both her reputation and professionalism. ‘NO BEEF’ And while she holds no beef with Ramson, an attorney-at-law, the Presiding Officer contends that it would have been better if Ramson had exercised some caution, rather than choose to display her photograph with the now President of Guyana. From the information on the Statement of Poll (SoP) for the General Election at the centre supervised by Gibbs, 165 persons voted for the APNU+AFC; 9 for the PPP/C; 2 for the Independent

Party (IP) and there was 1 unmarked ballot, giving a total of 177 voters. In the SoP for the Regional Election, 163 persons voted for the APNU+AFC; 8 for the PPP/C; 4 for the Organisation for the Victory of the People (OVP); and there were two unmarked ballots, also giving a total of 177 voters. During the tallying up of the votes by GECOM, and following the claim by Attorney Ramson, who was supported by then Agriculture Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy, a photograph appeared on Facebook headlined “Breaking News! Grand theft Elections 2015 Guyana!!!” In the post, Gibbs appeared with Mr Granger, and ballot box number 4385, which belongs to the station supervised by Gibbs, also appeared below the photograph. Interestingly, the figures for ballot box 4385 labelled Official PPP SoPs posted by a purported supporter of the PPP/C, showed the results only for General Election at the polling station managed by Gibbs, but they match the

figures she has shown this newspaper. However, in an opposite column captioned GECOM official SoPs, the numbers are different. It shows that some 268 persons voted for the APNU+AFC and 8 for the PPP/C. WICKED AND MISCHIEVOUS Gibbs told this publication that she is at a loss at how the numbers in the GECOM official SOPs, as displayed in the Facebook post and by Attorney Ramson, were arrived at; but she said it was an utterly wicked and mischievous concoction, to say the least. Following announcement of the final results of the Regional and General Elections, the PPP had called for a total recount of the votes, and later a recount of 22 ballot boxes it claimed reeked of irregularities; but GECOM Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally was not enamoured by the appeal. “… all of these 22 boxes, the PPP’s SoPs are identical

with the GECOM SoPs, and what they have there as purportedly GECOM SoPs with this great difference I cannot tell you where they got them from.” Gibbs related that the Facebook post was brought to her attention by friends, and soon after, her mobile phone went “ringing off the hook”. She said she was receiving calls from persons she does not know, in addition to her receiving a torrent of text and Whatsapp Messages. SCARED “I was scared. I had many sleepless nights,” the Presiding Officer said. She noted that she would be more than happy if GECOM can do a recount of the votes at the polling station she managed, just to clear her name of any wrongdoing and to protect her professionalism. The teacher pointed out that what was unfortunate was the ballots were counted in the presence of PPP/C and APNU+AFC officials, and

were verified by them, and there was no objection. The PPP/C has since claimed that the elections were rigged, and it is in the process of mounting a legal challenge to the declaration made by GECOM. Dr Ramsammy, who also addressed the press briefing where Attorney Ramson brandished the photograph of Gibbs and Mr Granger, had said: “We have been frustrated. More than 200,000 people voted for the PPP/C and they deserve to have their votes counted…The PPP/C has more than 200,000 people that we represent and we speak for them. We want their Xs counted, period!” Gibbs said that, as it relates to ballot box number 4385, the claim made in the Facebook post in the table under ‘GECOM official SoPs appears to be a ploy to “stir up trouble”. She is urging persons to maintain their calm and respect for others, and not be bated by mischief makers.

Women allegedly busted with cocaine at CJIA refused bail By Geeta Rampersaud TWO women recently busted with cocaine at CJIA were yesterday refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on separate drug trafficking charges. Vanessa Harper, 30, of Lot 70 Ramos Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge alleging that on May 15, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, she had in her possession 5.756 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah said Harper had arranged to take the prohibited substance to the Unites States after she had been promised US$5,000. The court heard that the mother of two had already been given Gy$100,000 and US$300 in advance to assist with

accommodation. Massiah contends that, on the day in question, Harper was on her way to the U.S. by way of CJIA when she had in her possession two suitcases. Procedural checks were made by CANU officers at the airport, and the alleged drugs were found concealed in the cover of both suitcases. Harper was subsequently told of the offence, and was arrested and charged. Harper was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Dexter Todd. And Nanda Ali, 39, of Lot 12 Courbane Park, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, also pleaded not guilty to a charge alleging that on May 15 at CJIA, she had in her possession 6.182 kg of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The CANU Prosecutor informed the court that Ali had also arranged with persons unknown to take the illegal substance to the US. She, too, had been

promised US$5,000 for her participation. The prosecutor said that, whilst at the airport, a search was conducted on Ali’s possession and the illegal substance was unearthed from the cover at the bottom of each suitcase. Attorney-at-law Mr Peter Hugh, representing Ali, told the court that his client is the proprietrix of a beer garden and a mother of two with no prior convictions. In an application for bail, he told the court that Ali would not have an early trial after the matter has been transferred to the Providence Court, since that magistrate is on leave. He further added that there is a backlog of cases at that court. APSARA DANCE TROUPE: Spicing up entertainment with superb choreography

By Alex Wayne SINCE its appearance on the local scene in 2008, the Apsara Dance Troupe has been mesmerising audiences with spellbinding choreography never before witnessed on the local scene. At each performance, this group has unleashed a package that reeked of intense creativity and classic and enthralling serenity, coupled with a dazzling versatility that propelled its members to the very top of the ladder as

‘ultimate stars’. Conceived by Chandini Ramnarain in 2008, Apsara basically performs as a cohesive TEAM, and not as individuals. Whilst the show is being directed and produced by Chandini Ramnarain, the main choreographers are Padmini and Lucria Rambalak, Kiran Mattai, Marcia Akeung, Devon Rambalak; and, in 2012, Fernando Yow. Marcia Akeung is a specialist in Latin Dancing; Kiran Mattai is a very accomplished classical dancer and specialist; Fernando

Yow is a break dancer and hip-hop specialist like Devon Rambalak; and Padmini Rambalak is also an accomplished dancer besides being the main choreographer. The core group consists of between ten and fifteen persons, but with local dancers and actors added to those from the Apsara dancing school, cast members would amount to between sixty and seventy persons for Apsara’s productions. Speaking to members of staff at Office of the President, the Guyanese Head of State declared that every year, National Awards are to be presented without fear. “Even if it’s one award, two awards, twenty, that is one of the institutions

of our country,” he said during a meeting with the staff. The President added that members of the National Assembly and the Judiciary must be treated with respect, regardless of party affiliation. Among the National Awards of Guyana are the Order of Excellence, Order of Roraima, Cacique Crown of Honour, Golden Arrow of Achievement,

Medal of Service, Cacique Crown of Valor, Golden Arrow of Courage, and President’s Commendation for Brave Conduct, Military Service Star and the Disciplined Services Star. APSARA DANCE TROUPE ... From page 16 wanted to bring a different type of show to Guyana. Its members felt that Guyana was ready for a change of style and the way shows were done. At the time of Apsara’s formation, the few dance groups in existence were featuring only a few dance styles, which were all similar. Apsara’s core group believed it was time to break the mould of dance in Guyana, and this was achieved with a ground-breaking show in March 2008 at the National Cultural Centre. Apsara’s tag line in the first show was “Dances that will leave you mesmerised”, and the audience was truly mesmerised by the premier performance. What was remarkable about the group was that its members achieved all this by themselves; the show was entirely choreographed by the girls themselves; and even today, all the costumes are designed by Chandini Ramnarain, Karishma Narwani and Padmini Rambalak, with inputs from the core group. Set designs are created by Chandini Ramnarain and produced by Cecil Rambalak and Andrew Arts. This has

made this group very self-sufficient in all aspects of a theatrical production. The group is known for its innovation and originality. Apsara specialises in Contemporary Classical dance forms wherein the basics of Indian Classical dances are used as a springboard to evolve a modern and unique vocabulary. The group has been moving from traditional Indian dance styles and fusing it with other dance styles from around the world -- from Latin Dancing, Belly/Arabic dancing; Flamenco, to hip-hop and much more. Such ease alone sets this group apart from its contemporaries. Apsara is one of the youngest dance troupes in Guyana, and it has always delivered on its promises to leave the audience wanting more. Apsara dance group has achieved tremendously since its formation; for instance, all its shows at the National Cultural Centre have been sold-out affairs; Apsara staged shows in Berbice; held performances at Carifesta X; participated in the launching of Rice Fest; staged “An evening of Dance” at the Pegasus; participated in Hits and

Jams’ Bollywood Concert; Fire Fest Bollywood Concert; GuyExpo and more. Coupled with the foregoing, Apsara has had international performances in Trinidad, Grenada and the USA. This independent and private group faces many challenges, among which are financing and sponsorships. The journey from inception to where the group is now has been a proverbial roller-coaster, and many of the initial members can hardly imagine how far the group has come in such a short time, from sitting at a table discussing “What if?” to actually making it all happen. Apsara has also published a multi-cultural magazine, has a fashion line, and is responsible for the Miss India Worldwide (Guyana) pageant and a very successful dance school to date. The Apsara Dance School has members as young as five years old, and its classes cover basic, intermediate and advanced kathak/Bollywood, hip-hop and belly-dancing. The group looks forward to continuing its contribution to dance in Guyana, and promoting the talent locally and internationally.

Close relatives of the father of three could not recall Sinclair having any trouble with anyone, nor had he made any complaints in this regard. yesterday, Sgt. Jackson disclosed how Wallace had handed him a .38 revolver that was allegedly used in commission of the crime. The Demerara Assize jury trying Terrence Wallace for the alleged murder of Shaquelle Grant heard Inspector Phillip Browman say he had collected two statements from the accused policeman. The Inspector said he was then serving as a sergeant at the Ruimveldt Police Station, and was attached to the Criminal Investigation Department. He said that having received a report of a fatal shooting which occurred on the 11th September, 2012 at Caesar Street, Agricola, East Bank, Demerara, he went to the scene at about 12.25 hours on the said date, in company of Supt. Jessemy and other ranks. He said he was assisting in the investigations. According to him, on September 14, 2012, at about 08:00 hrs, he was present at the GPHC Mortuary when the body of Grant was identified by relatives. At about 08:40 hrs that day, Dr.Nehaul Singh performed a post-mortem on the body of Grant, after which he gave the cause of death. The body, he said, was later handed over to relatives for burial. The Inspector said he later uplifted the original post-mortem report in regard to Shaquelle Grant, and he later turned same over to the custody of the Station sergeant for safe keeping. On September 18, 2012, between 17:00 hrs and 18:00 hrs, he was present at the Le Repentir Cemetery and witnessed the burial of Grant, and he marked the grave by its location. On 2nd October 2012, at about 08:15 hours, he con-

tacted one Terrence Wallace -– the accused -- at TSU headquarters at Eve Leary, and there he told him he was charging him with murder committed on Shaquelle Grant contrary to Common Law. He then read the particulars of the charge to him and took him to the Georgetown Magistrates Court to answer the said charge. In October 2012, witness went to the Records Office at the GPHC, where he signed and uplifted an original medical certificate in favour of Romel Bollers of Agricola. That same certificate was lodged at the Ruimveldt Police Station. The Inspector added that, during the investigations, he collected from Terrence Wallace two statements written by him, one dated 11/09/2012, which was written in his presence at Ruimveldt; and the other, which he collected from him on 14/9/2012, being a further statement which he also wrote in his presence. The witness said that during the P.I., he uplifted the Original PM Report in regard to Grant, and the original medical certificate in favour of Romel Bollers and took them to the Magistrate’s Court, where they were tendered. Mrs. Judith Mursalin, associated with Miss Narissa Leander, is prosecuting. Attorney-at-law Miss Sonia Parag is defending. Justice Navindra Singh is presiding at the trial, which was continuing yesterday when Sgt Jackson told the court that he used the .38 revolver that the accused had given him to discharge two .38 special ammunition and found the revolver to be a firearm in working order and a lethal barrel weapon. The trial is continuing.

Legend Haynes has big expectations for third edition of CPL BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – West Indies batting legend Desmond Haynes has backed this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) to be one of the best ever. The 59-year-old, who serves as ambassador for the Barbados Tridents, said with the quality of overseas players and the well-balanced nature of the six franchises, the June 20 to July 26 tournament could prove to be the stand-out edition. “I believe this could be the best Limacol CPL because looking at the teams I find that the teams are well balanced and all the teams are very competitive,” Haynes said. “With those big stars coming to be a part of CPL I think it is good for the competition. Over the last couple of years, CPL has been very good in having some very balanced sides but as you know, cricket is played on the day.

“But looking at the teams on paper, you would think that this CPL will be the best one of the three.” South Africa’s Jacques Kallis heads the list of overseas stars coming for the third edition of the CPL, with Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga, England’s Kevin Pietersen and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi also set to feature. Despite the influx of stars, Haynes says he did not expect any one team to dominate the tournament, as success would also be down to team unity. “All the teams are very competitive. You may look at one or two teams that do have some big names but a lot of the teams have good units and play together,” he pointed out. “Take the Tridents for example, if it is one thing you can say about us is that we always play together, we gel well and everybody likes the leader.

PRESIDENT of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, disclosed that his Association is looking forward to continued cooperation with the new government for the development of athletics. Speaking with Hutson, he said, “I’m hoping that the new government is going to continue our involvement in making sure that the standards the IAAF is looking for are kept. We believe that we should be working with the Permanent Secretary in the event that a new administration comes in.” He continued by saying, “Whatever changes may take place at the political top … it doesn’t affect our programme going forward. I’m meeting with the ‘PS’ and I plan to constantly meet and update him in relation to our plans for track and field and taking it forward.” Hutson revealed that the Ministry of Sport’s current Permanent Secretary, Steve Ninvalle, already took the step to organise and meet. He hopes the Ministry official will keep them abreast with

Meanwhile, the AAG has its plate full as they are preparing for two South American Championships with members of the team that qualified for this year’s CARIFTA Games, and did not compete. Columbia will then host the IAAF World Youth Championships from July 15 to 19 where the Under-18 squad from Guyana’s CARIFTA team is expected to compete. Hutson revealed to Chronicle Sport that the coach in charge of these teams is Robert Chisholm of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). The AAG disclosed that they normally send one athlete to the South American Junior Championships to satisfy the recommendations of the body responsible for World Athletics, IAAF, but the association is looking to attend all South American meets in large numbers to give the locals full exposure. His view is to have Guyana become a force to be reckoned with when they compete internationally and having this kind of experience will in time realise the goal.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC) – Seasoned campaigners Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin both lashed unbeaten halfcenturies as West Indies Women rebounded to beat Sri Lanka Women by 18 runs under Duckworth/Lewis, in the third One-Day International of the four-match series here yesterday. Opting to bat first at the R Premadasa Stadium, West Indies rallied to 215 for three off their 50 overs, with vice-captain Taylor stroking 86 not out and Dottin, 69 not out. The pair added an entertaining 151 in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand which pulled West Indies Women around from a tentative position of 64 for three in the 22nd over. In reply, Sri Lanka finished on 170 for eight after they were set a revised target of 189 off 40.2 overs, following a

rain interruption. Twenty-year-old lefthander Nipuni Hansika stroked 50 not out while opener Chamari Jayangani chipped in with 25. Off-spinners Afy Fletcher (2-25) and Anisa Mohammed (2-30) picked up wickets to inspire the West Indies attack. Red-hot Mumbai run into steady Super Kings today FOR THE second year in a row, Mumbai Indians have started poorly - they lost their first four games in IPL 2015 - before hiking up their performances in time to make the playoffs. After winning only two of their first seven matches, they raised their game in the middle stages when forms of some other teams began to taper off. They now run into Chennai Super Kings today, the original 'slow-starters' of the IPL who eventually have become an antithesis to that image. This year they reeled off six wins in seven games before winning only half as many in the next seven. Crucial financial documents missing from the NSC By Rawle Toney NUMEROUS documents detailing the spending of millions of dollars at the National Sports Commission (NSC) have gone missing. Chronicle Sport confirmed that the documents are usually kept in the office of former Director of Sport Neil Kumar. Kumar had told high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Sport, including former Minister Frank Anthony, that his office was broken into where the ‘important documents’ were kept. An official at the NSC was sceptical at giving out much information about the missing documents, but would only state, “It’s true, you can’t find nothing really pertaining to how much money was spent at the NSC. Kumar controlled everything basically”. Checks to police stations in and around the capital showed that no report of theft at the Homestretch Avenue NSC Office was ever made. Kumar, who sat as Sports Director of the National Sports Commission for the past 23 years, is coming under heavy scrutiny with regard to a number of irregularities at his entity during his PPP/C regime reign in Government. LOCAL ladies hockey team Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) are currently third in the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s national league after completing their second round of matches in the Twin-Island Republic over the past weekend. According to club coach Philip Fernandes, the GCC ladies were held to a 3-3 draw by points leaders Paragon last Saturday. In their first stint of the tournament, the local side went down 2-5 to the Trinidadians (Paragon) some three weeks ago. In their second game last Saturday, GCC lost 2-4 to Magnolias. However, on Sunday, the Bourda ladies edged Malvern 2-0 and Notre Dame 2-1.
