We were very impressed with Michelle’s responsiveness, communication, and market knowledge from the moment that we reached out for information, and this continued throughout the entire listing and closing process. She was also able to navigate the multiple offers and negotiate the best price and terms possible. The attention to detail from Michelle and her team was impressive, and the high level of service continued well after our closing day. I would consider our experience to be five-star in every way and will refer her to any family and friends looking to purchase or sell in the Naples or Marco Island area.

Though she has lived in Naples since 1968, her artwork—moody, introspective oil paintings interspersed with thrumming blues, unfolding hands and gaping eyes—stands out like a black sheep among a Floridian art scene full of pastel hues and watercolors of the beach. Davison’s figurative paintings—in which she renders the luminous shadows of her subjects’ bodies, faces and psyche—have a quality more akin to slash pine needles than palm fronds. Despite her long tenure here and prolific career, Davison may be better recognized throughout the country than in her hometown. She’s represented by Alan Avery Art Company in Atlanta, which exhibits artists ranging from contemporary heavyweights Chuck Close and Kara Walker to 20th century luminaries such as Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Rauschenberg. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. selected her as a finalist in its prestigious Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition in 2013, and her paintings are in notable collections across the country, from Sarasota’s Ringling Museum of Art to the esteemed private collection of Howard Tullman. The 78-year-old artist continues painting at a prolific pace, but she now also wields a surprising and versatile new tool: an iPad. In the last five years, she began a new series of small, mixed media pieces that look like tiny paintings on wooden panels. Working with Procreate, a digital illustration program, she draws new figures from imagination, and changes the background by layering in images she’s taken, removes elements, extrapolates pieces of one to drop into another, or creates suites by repeating a single image with different colors or textures. She then adheres the printed digital images onto wooden panels—most no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches—that she draws on and signs before lacquering. When lacquering the panels, Davison must ensure that the epoxy is uniform and fully covers the paper underneath, sealing it and transforming it from a printed image into an object: a glowing, palm-sized window to the subjects beneath.

her paintings alternate between matte and glowing expanses—a quality she carries into her iPad works, though in extremes. Her digitally enhanced art, with printed images buried under a layer of epoxy, are so luminous that they’re reflective. “They’re getting more entwined,” Davison says, speaking of the relationship between her digital artworks and oil paintings. “I will sometimes do an iPad drawing and it will suggest a painting. And if I’m working on a painting, I will take a photograph of it and play with it on my iPad. They’re really interchangeable at this point.” The riveting visual impact of Davison’s mixed media artworks is inverse to their handheld scale. While some of the subjects are delightfully aloof, with rounded noses and drooping wrists, some border on the wild, with limbs and gazes akimbo. This echoes themes from Davison’s oil paintings, which explore deeper, more universal levels of the psyche. Taking it a step further, the digital artworks’ diminutive size invites closer scrutiny, which exaggerates the mood of each tiny subject. Every curious expression looks more probing and every sign of distrust more foreboding. For the subjects that are playful, the quality comes through as more earnest and unapologetic. “I’m lucky for not having many distractions, but I also don’t have much of a life outside my studio,” Davison says. In her workspace, a plastic skeleton lounges in a church pew straddling the middle of the studio floor. An etching press now serves as a table, with paintings stacked high atop it. There’s an easel at the other end of the wall, and between them, more stacks of paintings are lined beneath windows. Her iPad is propped on an old

wooden drafting table, and her ease with the device is as organic as her surroundings—and in sharp contrast to most of its trappings. Some people may consider the artist fearless to embrace digital media in her ’70s, but the exploration of unfamiliar materials has long punctuated her studio practice. “There are so many things that I look at and I think, ‘Oh, that would be fun to try.’ Whatever allows you to express things that you may not otherwise express or just something more to play with,” she says. “It’s all play, and it’s whatever works for you—artists play.” Whereas most people retire from a decades-long career, Davison’s work is never-ending. If anything, the longer she works, the more exponentially her ideas multiply, materializing as more artwork in varying mediums. “To me, ideas have always come from working,” she continues. “It happens when you sit down to work and that

through the slash pines outside her windows, she paints, sketches and builds almost every day; she plays. “It becomes a habit. It’s what I do,” Davison says. “Someone asked the other day what I did for fun. And I just stared at them.”

tutelage of the estate transitioned to Alberto’s daughter Ludovica and son Alessandro, although Alberto remains heavily involved. As he laid the framework for his new era of Marchesi di Grésy wines, it was Martinenga that continued to intrigue Alberto. He soon noticed nebbiolo reacted differently in different parts of the vineyard, which led to experiments with site-specific bottlings. First came Camp Gros in 1978, with its south-southwest exposure, followed by Gaiun and its southern exposure in 1982. Both have since been recognized as the upper echelon of Barbaresco. His experiments also led to new discoveries about the various clones and rootstocks which coexist in Martinenga. These, combined with the altitude, exposure and soils, make the monopole an endless playground of possibilities. Martinenga’s different expressions of nebbiolo require varying vinification and aging regimens, even though the grapes are cultivated mere meters apart. Gaiun, from a 5.6-acre plot,

ages for two years in barriques (small barrels, also known as Bordeaux barrels) of first and second passage oak, followed by additional time in bottle before release. Camp Gros spends a similar length of time in barriques, followed by another 12 to 18 months in Slovenian oak. While Ludovica says you “feel more shoulders” with Camp Gros, her eyes light up when talking about Gaiun, making it clear that she, like Bridgett, favors the wine. Ludovica, too, finds it mysterious, a wine that feels complete and evolved due to the aging in barrique, but still holds potential for so much more as the years go on. Even with different approaches

to aging, for these wines it all comes back to the vineyard. From the beginning, Ludovica says, her father wanted to create what she has since coined a “no-ego” wine, allowing Martinenga and all its different permutations to speak for themselves without the winemaker’s voice overshadowing the

ontemporary art galleries can be overwhelming, even for the most sophisticated collectors. But Aldo Castillo has made it his life’s mission to make people feel at ease, even as they’re surrounded by provocative sculptures, paintings and digital installations. He showcases the work of international artists like Augusto Esquivel, Enrique Machado and Metis Atash in open settings where viewers are invited to take their time with each piece and get a sense of the story that

inspired it. But it’s not just the excellent curation and display that draws people to Castillo’s two eponymous galleries—a 1,800-square-foot space in Naples and eight individual spaces at Miromar Design Center in Estero. In a business that thrives on cool detachment, the owner has built a reputation for his generosity, warmth and a personality that’s just as colorful as the Machado resin-and-silicone paintings he deals with. Recently, visitors to his newer Fifth Avenue South space have been immediately drawn to Seeing in a New Light, a digital work by Jorge Brinkerhoff. It features 65,536 light-emitting diodes that Brinkerhoff uses to activate familiar static forms—a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, for example—in a way that alters how viewers receive them by changing the color, definition, intensity and duration of the display. He reconceptualizes the common with digital color-field imaging. Then there’s the work of Miami-based Esquivel, which captivates viewers with thousands of buttons that are threaded on monofilament strings suspended from an acrylic structure. While the medium is a nod to his grandmother, the subjects are purely 21st century with elements of pixilation, pop culture, obsessive-compulsive disorder, the immigrant experience and capitalism.

Recognizing that art is a vehicle for communication, Aldo Castillo represents international artists whose work delivers a message and reflects on their culture or the times.

program when he was 15 and spent a semester in Wisconsin. There, he became enthralled with woodworking, which allowed him to create three-dimensional models of his sketches. That skill opened Castillo’s mind to architecture, and he went abroad again at age 17 to study the profession at the Universidad de San Carlos, then later at the Universidad Rafael Landívar, both in Guatemala City. Even as he studied, Castillo continued to focus on art. He studied ceramic in Lima, Peru, and he served as both curator and graphic designer at Guatemala City’s Museo Popol Vuh, which has one of the largest collections of Mayan art in the world. The experience drove home the importance of art history. “People create art to report,” he says. “The difference between news and art is that artists find beauty in everything, and the viewer has the last word.” Castillo headed to Chicago in the mid-1980s and received a scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago after living there for a year. Unable to return home because of the ongoing Iran-Contra scandal, he applied for political asylum in the United States—a process that took seven years. “It was a very dark and painful time in my life,” he explains, noting he was unable to complete his fine arts education. But he took comfort in the city’s energy and the thriving,

83

innovative art scene, which made it an exciting place for a young artist to be. He formed deep relationships with a number of artists and became active in the LGBTQI+ community. Activity turned to activism once the AIDS pandemic exploded and began claiming the lives of many of his closest friends. “I realized that activism was a card we all needed to play,” Castillo says. “And art is such a beautiful, intelligent model for us to expose all the issues that need to be fixed.” Being so far from home and in a city with segregated neighborhoods, Castillo also became painfully aware that while America was certainly diverse, it wasn’t quite the melting pot that he heard people go on about. “It’s the first time I had the Latino label,” he says. In 1993, he opened his first gallery in Chicago. His mission: Spark conversation, break down boundaries and educate the public about Latin American culture. It soon became renowned for its mix of innovative works by artists such as Rufino Tamayo, Luis González Palma, Maria Bonomi, Jesús Cobo and Carlos Colombino. The success of the gallery gave Castillo a platform to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS, lobby politicians and serve on the board at the AIDS Foundation Chicago. In 2003, he launched the Aldo Castillo Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promoted diversity among emerging and established artists around the world. Two years later, he was inducted into The Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. By 2011, Castillo was feeling increasingly stifled and eager for a new challenge, so he closed up shop and headed south to become the associate director of the Miami International Art Fair—one of many fairs he has led through the years. Life in South Florida gave him a creative jolt he hadn’t felt in years. “When you live in a place that is so beautiful and comfortable like

84

His Miromar Design Center galleries have pushed the envelope on contemporary art since opening in 2011. In the middle of the pandemic, last summer, he opened a Fifth Avenue South location.

Chicago, there’s less risk-taking,” he explains. “When I went to Miami, I saw how contemporary art was being created using some of the latest technology.” Eager to introduce his own mix of digital and analog media, that same year Castillo headed for Southwest Florida and opened the Estero gallery. He chose the region because it was “evolving with new people moving from New York and Los Angeles, as well as global residents,” he says. “With that comes a high demand for contemporary art.” Almost 10 years later, during the height of the pandemic, he opened a sister location on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples. He explains that the uncertainty of the pandemic awakened a hunger in many collectors for art by progressive artists. While bringing the work of innovative creatives from far-flung locales to experienced and new collectors is exhilarating, Castillo would still like to do more. He’d love to see the formation of a Naples art dealers association to help promote collaboration and connoisseurship between area galleries—especially as the region becomes the primary residence for more avid collectors. “In ancient times, people were buried with their possessions, so they could take them with them into the afterlife,” he explains. “I want to be buried with the satisfaction that I’ve made a difference in the world.”

She had front-row access to fine art at both of her grandmothers’ homes. “One grandmother was a bit more formal— all the good art was in the room where no one really went,” she says. “My other grandmother, Betty Van Arsdale, loved to teach us everything she knew. She had a green Karmann Ghia and a box of pastels in the back—she actually let us draw on the trunk. But she also exposed me early on to local artists, such as Paul Arsenault and the late Richard Segalman, and also the work of Albers, Giacometti, Man Ray and even the art of ikebana.” Once Van Arsdale-Berg relocated to Los Angeles and began filling her walls with her own collection, her career in fashion informed her medium of choice. “I worked in a photo studio for nearly two decades with some of the most recognized talent in the world, and their work was insanely inspirational,” she explains. “I will always be drawn to photography. I recently procured a Warhol Polaroid of Grace Jones, which I have coveted for years.” She was inspired to start diversifying after she took a job overseeing global communications for cosmetic brands

Smashbox and GLAMGLOW. That’s where she met colleague Donald Robertson, who in addition to being an Estée Lauder executive is also a noted Instagram personality (@drawbertson) and artist in his own right. “It wasn’t until I met Donald that [my purchases] really started to get colorful,” she says. “I love a mix of mediums but most importantly, they all have meaning. There is not a piece on the wall that does not have a story behind it. I purchase art that brings a sense of happiness and sparks conversation.” When Van Arsdale-Berg, her husband, Daryl, and their 6-year-old decided to leave Los Angeles for Naples to be closer to family, she made sure to carve out a place of honor in the entry for a set of Robertson’s paintings that never fails to start conversations as soon as guests arrive. “I saw the pieces on his Instagram. He found these old panels and decided to paint them Kelly green with his version of a Slim Aarons-C.Z. Guest party in two different scenes,” she says. “I commented that they were my absolute favorite paintings he had ever created.” Not only did Robertson like her comment, he rewarded her with a rapid reply. “He texted and said they were mine but not to open the boxes until I arrived in Naples. When it was time to unbox them, I discovered he had written ‘Friends for Life’ on the back.” —Laura Kostelny

Everyone in downtown Fort Myers’ River District knows Terry Tincher. There’s no mistaking the art dealer, collector and gallery owner thanks to his long white beard, black-painted fingernails and, often, funky eyeglasses. But he wasn’t always a groovy man about town. Growing up in a small Midwestern town, he was far more familiar with farming than fine art. After enrolling at the University of Cincinnati, Tincher discovered his love for art and his attraction to the people who create it. “I found myself migrating to the art school and architectural school,” he says. “I felt like my fellow students and my teachers were my people. Art became a passion.” Today, Tincher curates a variety of mediums for collectors and galleries, but he says his personal taste veers to the classical. “I’m personally drawn to impressionistic, pointillism and early modernist works,” he explains. Tincher discovered the work of Clark Fox in the early 1980s when he was having his shoulder reconstructed by a surgeon in Washington, D.C. The procedure required several visits, so he found

himself with time to explore the local art world. It was at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which Fox founded in 1992, where he would meet the man who would become one of his favorite painters and also a friend. Before founding the museum, Fox had enjoyed quite a life. He grew up in Houston, protesting the Vietnam War, and later lived in Manhattan and hung out with the likes of Rauschenberg and Warhol. “I was drawn to Clark’s style immediately,” Tincher says. “He’s a modernist with a classical style—that’s why I think his work is included in the National Gallery of Art in D.C. It’s in MoMA in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and so many others worldwide.” While the pieces on public display are impressive, Tincher’s favorite Clark Fox work hangs in the entryway of his downtown Fort Myers condo. It’s a portrait of George Washington from a series of American presidents. The painting, simply titled George Washington, was purchased at a show at Fox’s museum in the early 1990s. “It makes me really happy every day that I see it,” Tincher says. “I attach art to people, and this one reminds me of Clark, who’s now in his late 80s, still making art, and who is just a magical human being.” —Stephanie Davis

Should you happen to see Amy Jensen at a party, try to snag the seat next to her. Not only will you leave the event a little smarter, you’ll also be compelled to add the work of five or six up-and-coming artists to your collection. As the general manager of METHOD & CONCEPT, the Naples gallery and design atelier where her husband Chad is a founding director, Jensen has made it her business to share her passion for emerging artists all day, every day. “I love working with and supporting creatives,” she says. “If I believe in their work and their mission, nothing can stop me.” The native Canadian has loved all kinds of art—traditional, performance, conceptual—since childhood. She studied sculpture, painting, drawing and singing in Montreal and in Detroit, where she and her friends regularly attended plays, museums and art openings. “I came to realize that what really drove me was underculture—the undiscovered,” Jensen says. “I love contemporary artists who are seeking something new. They’re often messengers, trying to connect the past and the future.”

Now in Naples, in addition to helping run the gallery, she also serves as the art program coordinator at Youth Haven of Southwest Florida, a sanctuary for abused and homeless youth, where she champions the power of contemporary art to kids and the community at large. While Jensen can hardly contain her enthusiasm to a single artist or sole piece of art, she is currently excited about Unholy

Materiality is what draws me in,” she explains. “And there’s so much humility to Matt—he introduces himself with, ‘I play with paper.’” She has known the artist for years—Chad and Shlian attended art school together—and he has made several trips to Naples, including an appearance at one of the gallery’s shows last spring. Jensen says looking at the work can be quite emotional, but that doesn’t mean it’s heavy. “Just knowing Matt, his process, his generosity—his devotion to science and art and building bridges—his art can move so many things forward if people take time

ARE YOUR ART AND VALUABLE ASSETS TRULY SAFE? Like most homeowners, you probably rely solely on a conventional security system for all protection. There’s always a chance it can be compromised when you’re away. And when you’re home and it’s disarmed for most of the day with staff, workers, guests and visitors present, art, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, memorabilia, wine and other assets are vulnerable. In either case, art security advisors urge a second layer of protection. Never mind the fact that it has no arms, so technically, it really shouldn’t even be considered an armchair. Large slabs of porcelain tile flooring and inlaid LED ceiling lights flow throughout the home, which shifts the focus to the owners’ decor and the outstanding views. The living space and the primary bedroom and bathroom all have floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that open onto spacious balconies overlooking the Gulf. LASER CATARACT SURGERY: RESTORE THE VISION OF YOUR YOUTH

Center For Sight Jon R. Berlie, M.D.; George Brinnig, M.D., Ph. D.; Julie Carter, M.D.; Reena Patel, O.D. Cataract surgery must be performed with the utmost precision, and luckily, Naples is home to one of the nation’s leading ophthalmology practices, Center For Sight. Cataract & Lens Replacement Surgeons at Center For Sight use advanced laser procedures to improve efficiency and precision while painlessly removing the cataract. Cutting-edge laser technology softens and disassembles the cataract with micronlevel precision. Once the cataract is fragmented, the surgeon removes the cataract and inserts a new artificial lens in its place. Laser cataract surgery ensures the patient receives the best technique and technology available to result in minimal procedural and recovery times.

Today, patients have many lens options when considering cataract surgery. In earlier years, intraocular lenses were fixed for one distance and required the patient to wear glasses after surgery. Patients can now choose to have their natural lens replaced by an advanced intraocular lens based on their individual vision goals, which could limit - or eliminate - the need for glasses post-surgery. The most advanced intraocular lenses give patients the opportunity to return (or improve) their eyesight to a perfect 20/20! The results of laser cataract surgery speak for themselves. Schedule your cataract consultation, today.

(239) 215-4101 Center for Breast Health 13813 Metro Parkway, Suite C, Fort Myers, FL 33912

Exceptionally gratifying is how Natalia Partain, M.D., Director of the Millennium Physician Group Center for Breast Health describes her chosen breast surgery specialty. “I get to be a part of a woman’s journey through the most challenging times of their lives. I get the privilege to walk alongside them and help them through their treatment.” A highly trained board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Partain says she enjoys the personal and professional challenge of constantly staying up to date with all the new information and latest advances. Millennium chose her to lead its Center for Breast Health out of a desire to bring to Southwest Florida the same types of initiatives she spearheaded at one of the nation’s finest cancer institutions, MD Anderson Cancer Center, before returning to her hometown of Fort Myers. These included Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and pain management programs. As the Director of Millennium Physician Group’s Center for Breast Health, Dr. Partain’s practice focuses on treating both cancerous and noncancerous breast conditions, with the goal of always preserving the breast’s most natural appearance. “As a woman, scars matter to me so much. RO O M W ITH A VIEUX Makes 1 cocktail • 1 1/2 ounces WhistlePig 6 Year Piggyback Rye • 3/4 ounce H by Hine VSOP Cognac • 3/4 ounce Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth • ¼ ounce Bénédictine liqueur • ¼ ounce Giffard Vanille de Madagascar • 1-2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters • 1-2 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters • 1 lemon for zest and garnish

The stirring technique—12 times to the left and 12 times to the right—is part of the magic for Ziggy’s Room with a Vieux.

Fill a mixing glass with ice, then add the rye, Cognac, vermouth, Bénédictine, Giffard Vanille de Madagascar and a couple dashes of each bitter. Gently stir about a dozen times clockwise and a dozen times counterclockwise. Strain into a very cold coupe, martini or wine glass. Using a sharp peeler, cut a large strip of lemon peel. Express the lemon oil over the surface of the drink: hold peel with both hands between index and thumb fingers, twist peel, then glide it around the rim and drop into drink.
