--David G. DeFant was born and raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula along the southern shore of Lake Superior. DeFant has been involved in archaeological research for over 35 years, including 24 years living and working in Micronesia. He received his BA from Northern Michigan University, an MA in Anthropology/Archaeology from Western Michigan University, and completed his class work and qualifying exams for a PhD in Archaeology at Southern Illinois University. He served as chief archaeologist for the government historic preservation programs in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, the Republic of Palau, and American Samoa. His experience also includes archaeological investigations in Michigan, Illinois, Mississippi, Arkansas, South Dakota, Guam, Rota, Saipan, Tinian, Palau, Diego Garcia (Indian Ocean), and Okinawa, Japan. Since November 2011, DeFant has served as Principal Investigator and Office Manager for Southeastern Archaeological Research Inc. (SEARCH) on Guam.
