Antonio Foscari Widmann Rezzonico era tale che la Repubblica di Venezia temette un sovvertimento degli equilibri e l’istituzione della Signoria, come a Firenze. Tre giorni prima della morte, e dopo un lunghissimo regno, il Doge venne deposto ed il figlio Jacopo fu esiliato. Tali fatti presero i contorni della tragedia, e fu tale il fascino che le figure di Francesco e Jacopo esercitarono nel tempo che, come accennato, Byron ne scrisse un dramma e Verdi musicò la celeberrima I due Foscari. Tornati a Venezia i discendenti del grande Doge continuarono ad essere parte attiva nella storia della città, ma nessuno di loro venne rieletto alla massima carica dello stato, pur avendone diritto. Si temeva ancora l’ombra immensa di Francesco, il quale da solo, “può bastare ad illustrare una casata”, come dicono orgogliosamente gli attuali discendenti. Antonio Foscari, ultimo ma non ultimo rappresentante della celebre stirpe, vive ed opera nella città degli antenati. Una sua cugina, Elisabetta, ha sposato un discendente dei Medici di Firenze, quasi a voler rinsaldare i legami di amicizia con la dinastia Medicea, come ai tempi di Cosimo il Vecchio e Francesco Foscari. Con orgoglio e determinazione il conte architetto Antonio Foscari ha voluto ridare alla Malcontenta la sua antica proprietà. E’ stato un’impresa difficile, di restauro e di recupero, ma un’opera soprattutto dettata dal grande amore per il luogo, che quasi dopo duecento anni è tornata ai Foscari e all’antico splendore. E chissà se la bella Malcontenta, la leggendaria figura di donna che dà il nome a questo luogo dal fascino antico, e che si dice, deve il suo nome al fatto di essere stata qui rinchiusa a causa, forse, di un amore troppo esclusivo, non possa, circondata dall’affetto dei suoi discendenti, essere finalmente felice.

The power of Doge Foscari was so far-reaching that the Republic of Venice feared for the stability and institutional power of the Signoria, as had happened in Florence. Three days before his death, after an extremely long reign, the Doge was removed from office and his son Jacopo was exiled. These historical events were borderline tragic and they captured the collective imagination to such an extent that the figures of Francesco and Jacopo inspired Byron to write his famed drama and moved Verdi to compose his celebrated opera The Two Foscari. Upon returning to Venice, the great Doge’s descendants continued to be an active part of the city’s history, but none of them were ever re-elected to the state’s highest office, even if they held said right. Francesco’s immense shadow was still amply feared, and that alone ‘is enough to bring honor to a family’, as his current-day descendants say. Antonio Foscari, the last but not least representative of this celebrated lineage, lives and works in the city of his ancestors. One of his cousins, Elisabetta, married a descent of Florence’s Medici dynasty, almost as if attempting to consolidate friendly ties with the Medici clan, as it had been in the times of Cosimo the Elder and Francesco Foscari. With pride and determination, count and architect Antonio Foscari has strived to give Malcontenta its ancient identity. It was a challenging enterprise involving restoration and renovation, but, first and foremost, it proved a job inspired by his great love for the place. After nearly two centuries it has been reclaimed for the Foscari family and returned to its own ancient splendor. Seeped in extraordinary appeal, this ancient building once hosted the beautiful ‘Malcontenta’, the legendary woman for whom it was named. She is thought to have been locked up here because of an extreme lover’s conflict. And who’s to say, if she will finally find long-awaited happiness surrounded by the affection of her descendants.
