Where did the idea of Se solo fossimo altrove (if we were only elsewhere) come from? I had been writing love poems and hiding them away for some time. They needed to come out of their hiding place and find new hearts to keep company. What are you working on at the moment? I’m exhibiting my photographs in Milan from 4 to 24 May. The title of the exhibition is Stanza. It’s an introspective journey from the past to the present while reflecting on hopes for the future. I’m also writing a script with another person. A comedy for a female cast, which I’d like to shoot precisely in Capri. Cinema or theater? Acting. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in a film, on television or on a stage. Are there places in Capri which you are most fond of? I fell in love with Capri when I turned twenty-one. I had already stayed on the island when I was a little girl but my love affair with Capri began on 1 June 2007. There’s something special about Capri that you can’t put your finger on. It’s in the air, in the waves that splash against the Faraglioni, in the breathtaking sunsets. Villa Lysis is a magical place. It’s almost disturbing, so imbued with the life of Count Fersen. His presence can still be perceived. What is your ideal day like when you are on the island? I get up late and have breakfast in bed then go sailing all day. Under the lemon trees at Paolino in the evening then a table at the Taverna Anema e Core.

Come è nata l’idea di Se solo fossimo altrove? Da una collezione di poesie d’amore che avevo messo nel cassetto da tempo. Avevano bisogno di uscire e trovare nuovi cuori a cui fare compagnia. In cosa è impegnata in questo momento? Una mostra fotografica a Milano dal 4 al 24 maggio. S’intitola Stanza, un viaggio introspettivo che va dal passato al presente pensando alle speranze di domani. Sto anche scrivendo una sceneggiatura a quattro mani, una commedia al femminile che vorrei girare proprio a Capri. Cinema o teatro? Recitare. Che sia cinema, televisione o teatro non ha importanza. Ci sono luoghi di Capri a cui è legata in particolare modo? Mi sono innamorata di Capri il giorno del mio ventesimo compleanno. Ero già stata sull’isola da bambina ma la scintilla si è accesa quel 1 giugno del 2007. Capri ha qualcosa di speciale che non è ben definito. È nell’aria, nelle onde che sbattono contro i Faraglioni, nei tramonti imponenti. Villa Lysis è un posto magico, sulla soglia dell’inquietante, impregnato del vissuto del Conte Fersen. La sua giornata ideale quando è sull’isola? Sveglia tardi e colazione a letto. Gozzo o barca per la giornata. La sera da Paolino sotto i limoni e poi sui tavoli della Taverna Anema e Core.

When did you begin working in finance? When, after graduating, a well-known professor at La Sapienza University told me I wasn’t fit for an academic career. No one in my family had one. He said, “You’re smart. Leave this place”. What is the most ridiculous thing that has happened to you? I had been working for a bank for a while. It was tough and I wanted to resign. A blue-eyed young man asked me if I knew how to sail. A team was one member short. We came first. That young man was one of the most important shareholders of the bank and above all my boss. A life-changing choice? I was the youngest manager of a large international bank. I left to follow Paolo Basilico. With him and thanks to him we founded Kairos, today one of the most important Italian asset management companies. After “I Diavoli”, your other book came out “Tutto è in frantumi e danza”, written with the Strega-award-winner Edoardo Nesi... It is about the history of Italy of the past 17 years. From Clinton’s speech in 2000 to Trump’s taking oath of office. The roughest years since the post war period for the entire western world. We talk about the mechanisms which determined winners and losers, wealth and poverty. A successful website was created from your book I Diavoli Yes, diavoli.com. Quando ha cominciato a occuparsi di finanza? Dopo la laurea, un professore della Sapienza mi fece capire che la carriera accademica non faceva per me. Mi disse “lei è sveglio vada via”. La cosa più assurda che le è successa? Lavoravo da poco in banca a Milano, era dura e volevo mollare. Un ragazzo mi chiese se sapevo andare a vela, mancava un componente per un’importante regata. Arrivammo primi, quel ragazzo era uno degli azionisti più importanti della banca. Era il mio capo. La scelta che le ha cambiato la vita? Ero il più giovane dirigente di una grande banca internazionale, andai via per seguire Paolo Basilico. Con lui e grazie a lui fondammo Kairos, oggi una delle più importanti società di asset management italiane. Dopo I Diavoli a fine aprile è uscito Tutto è in frantumi e danza, scritto con il premio Strega Edoardo Nesi... È un racconto degli ultimi 17 anni di storia italiana, dal discorso di Clinton nel 2000 a quello di insediamento di Trump. Gli anni più duri dal dopoguerra per l›intero occidente. When did you become passionate about television? After finishing university in 2003 I thought I would end up working for a communication agency or a company that organizes major events, or that I would have gone back to my hometown, Trissino, near Vicenza, and join the family business. Participating in the Miss Italia contest was like a sliding door. What are you working on at the moment? I’m a Videonews journalist working for Canale 5 and my field is soft news for the morning programs and for Pomeriggio 5. I recently worked as a reporter for “L’isola dei famosi” (Celebrity Survivor). I have been a reporter for reality shows ever since I began working for Mediasaet nine years ago. Is there a dream you’d like to come true? I’d like to have my own program, maybe one on travels. I love hotels and there are still so many places I’d like to see. It would be perfect! But my objective at the moment is to have a role in an all-news television program. I will soon begin a collaboration with Tgcom24. I hope to be an anchor-woman there one day. Do you have a professional model? Yes, Cristina Parodi. What is Capri to you? A weekend get-away with friends. That’s how I’ve always seen it. To celebrate New Year’s, a hen party, or a birthday. All special occasions. Come è nata la passione per la televisione? Nel 2003, dopo la laurea pensavo che il mio destino sarebbe stato in qualche agenzia di comunicazione o che sarei tornata al mio paesino d’origine, Trissino, in provincia di Vicenza a lavorare nell’azienda di famiglia. Partecipare a miss Italia è stato come uno sliding doors. A cosa sta lavorando ora? Sono una giornalista di Videonews, lavoro per Canale 5 e mi occupo delle soft news per i programmi del mattino e di Pomeriggio 5. Ho da poco concluso il mio ruolo di inviata nel programma L’isola dei famosi. Seguo i reality da quando sono entrata in Mediaset. Un sogno da realizzare? Un programma sui viaggi, sono curiosa, amo gli hotel e ho ancora molto da vedere. Oggi, però, il mio obiettivo è di entrare nel mondo delle-news. At what age did you start? When I was 10 years old, I began to hang around barbershops. There are some photos that show me at that age trying my hand, a light hand, at shaving. What is your Capri story? I was born on Capri. We had a jewelry store on Via Vittorio Emanuele and I spent all my time there. I got married when I was 21 and had 3 children in 3 years: Mariella, Costantino and Roberto. Tell us an anecdote about your life. My husband was the owner of La Residenza. I had never seen him before. One of our suppliers was staying there and we went to visit him to place an order. It was love at first sight. As soon as we came back to the store, he sent me a message asking me to meet him. What happened next? He immediately asked me to marry him! We had met in front of the little Madonna on Via Valentino and were walking toward the Piazzetta del Pittore at Punta Cannone. We were married after a year and a half and have been together for our whole lives. What period on Capri do you recall most fondly? The fantastic 1950s and 1960s. Capri was full of actors and artists. I remember for example Princess Margaret and handsome Tyrone Power. Your ideal day? Going out and meeting friends and the people I know. I love to spend time in the piazzetta and chat, with a lovely glass of fresh orange juice nearby. When schools are closed, the priority is to spend time with my family and grandchildren who arrive from America and from Rome. What do you miss most when you’re away from Capri? The sea, the tranquility and the certainty of feeling at home even when I go out and about the island.

Qual è la sua storia caprese? Sono nata a Capri. Avevamo il negozio di gioielleria in via Vittorio Emanuele e passavo tutto il tempo lì. A 21 anni mi sono sposata e ho avuto 3 figli in 3 anni. Mariella, Costantino e Roberto. Ci racconti un aneddoto della sua vita. Mio marito era proprietario de La Residenza ma non l’avevo mai visto prima. Un nostro fornitore soggiornava lì e andammo da lui per un ordine. È stato un colpo di fulmine. Appena rientrata in negozio mi ha fatto recapitare un messaggio chiedendomi di incontrarci. Poi cosa è successo? Mi ha chiesto subito di sposarlo! Ci vedevamo davanti alla madonnina di via Valentino e passeggiavamo verso la piazzetta del Pittore. Dopo un anno e mezzo ci siamo sposati e siamo stati insieme tutta la vita. Il periodo di Capri che ricorda con più affetto? Gli anni ’50 e ’60. Capri era frequentata da attori e artisti. Ricordo ad esempio la Principessa Margaret e il bellissimo Tyrone Power. La sua giornata ideale? Amo passare del tempo in piazzetta e chiacchierare di fronte a una spremuta di arance. Quando chiudono le scuole la priorità diventano la mia famiglia e le mie nipoti che arrivano dall’America e da Roma. Cosa le manca dell’isola quando non è a Capri? Il mare, la tranquillità e la sicurezza di sentirmi sempre a casa anche quando esco e sono in giro.

Un panorama senza eguali come quello che si gode, al termine della passeggiata, da Punta Tragara. Altro belvedere è piazzetta delle Noci con vista panoramica sull’Arco Naturale. Qui l’occhio si perde tra i Monti Lattari che sovrastano la Costiera Amalfitana, ma se non è abbastanza si può scegliere una location ancora più panoramica, il Monte Tiberio, il luogo più alto del comune di Capri. Qui l’alba è uno spettacolo, le terrazze che si trovano nei dintorni sono il luogo ideale per aspettare l’alba. Un altro punto scenografico da raggiungersi con una camminata di 45 minuti da Anacapri (ma ne vale la pena!) è Cetrella. Le 6 del mattino è anche

magical hour at Marina Grande. In the summer months the sun rises and shimmers on the water and dawn caresses Tiberius’s mountain, casting a spell of silence and beauty. SUNSET It is the quintessential magical moment on the island, when the sun dips into the sea. You can see it from Anacapri, which overlooks the west coast. A special place is the beach at Faro di Punta Carena, if you want to enjoy the sun throughout the day as well as at dusk. Days are longer in summer and this is the perfect place for an aperitif at sunset, at Lido del Faro. A charming alternative is Il Belvedere della Migliera, a vantage point affording views over a picture-perfect sunset, also on the western side of the island, above the Faro di Punta Carena. There is a 20-minute walk from Anacapri to the Belvedere, where there is a little terrace that seems to end right in the Mediterrarean Sea. Easier to get to and truly impressive is the Riccio Restaurant and Beach club of the Capri Palace Hotel & Spa at Anacapri, set amidst the sea rocks and overlooking the sea, not far from the famous Grotta Azzurra.

She’s reading, on her iPad, the script for her next film. She’s Helen Mirren, the actress who won an Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth in The Queen and a three-time Golden Globe winner, as well as recipient of the Volpi Cup in Venice. But the queen is rather quiet. She looks out the window at the expansive sea, frothy and grey, on this winter day, but she doesn’t mind it. If you’re born in England, which is an island after all, the sea is a part of you, familiar, like the fields and roads. In Capri, Helen Mirren will receive the Legend Award at the festival directed by Pascal Vicedomini. Vicedomini’s event has been bringing exclusive film previews and international stars to Capri and Anacapri for twenty-one years. And now, for New Year’s 2017, Helen Mirren will be the guest of honour. She was born into a Russian military family: one of her ancestors was a hero of the Russian resistance against Napoleon. Her father, on the other hand, was a viola player with the London Philharmonic who later became a taxi driver. Then her father changed their family’s name: Elena Vasilevna Mironova became Helen Mirren. Without caring too much about her noble lineage nor the financial uncertainty that plagued her childhood, she grew up with a love of theatre, non-conformism and freedom. Capri, cinema and me CAPRI, IL CINEMA E ME text Chicco Coda

Spotted in Capri’s Piazzetta, as usual, the producer Pierpaolo Verga tells all Incontrato, come di solito accade, nella Piazzetta di Capri, il produttore Pierpaolo Verga si racconta During the David di Donatello awards night, one film created quite a buzz and received 5 prizes: Indivisible. Some have seen it, others know the plot, but not everyone knows there’s a piece of Capri behind it, the producer Pierpaolo Verga. What was the starting point for Indivisible? The wish to narrate a story about growing up and the pain that accompanies it. Growing up means separating yourself from someone or from a part of yourself, and the story of the Siamese twins is very symbolic. Nicola Guaglianone’s idea was convincing from the start, especially when Edoardo De Angelis had the intuition to reject the idea of making a film about monsters and chose two beautiful girls for the protagonists. We found the Fontana sisters, both talented actresses and qualified professionals. Did you expect the awards you received? It is an original story and De Angelis found the perfect narrative voice to tell it. The epilogue seems unexpected. Would you have preferred a different ending? We had three possible endings and after all, the chosen one is also the most desired. I won’t say any more. Readers will want to see the film. What are you working on now? On Edoardo’s next film. He’s the director and my partner in the O’Groove. We are in the writing phase, and hope to start shooting in the fall. Durante la serata dei David di Donatello un film ha fatto parlare di sé ricevendo ben cinque riconoscimenti: Indivisibili. Alcuni l’hanno visto, altri conoscono la trama, ma non tutti sanno che dietro c’è una parte di Capri, il produttore Pierpaolo Verga. Come è nato Indivisibili? Dal desiderio di raccontare una storia sulla crescita e sul dolore che essa comporta. Per crescere bisogna separarsi da qualcuno o da una parte di se stessi e la storia delle gemelle siamesi è fortemente emblematica. L’idea di Nicola Guaglianone convinse subito, sopratutto quando Edoardo De Angelis ebbe l’intuizione di non voler fare un film su dei mostri ma di trovare due protagoniste, due ragazze estremamente belle. Trovammo le sorelle Fontana, attrici di talento e professioniste di livello. Si aspettava i riconoscimenti ricevuti? Prevedevo che il film creasse un po’ di scompiglio, ma non un risultato del genere. È una storia originale e De Angelis ha trovato un linguaggio narrativo perfetto. L’epilogo sembra inaspettato. L’avrebbe preferito diverso? Avevamo tre possibili finali e dopo tanto quello scelto è il più desiderato. Non direi altro, il nostro lettore vorrà vedere il film. A cosa sta lavorando ora? Al prossimo film di Edoardo, regista e mio socio nella O’Groove. Siamo in fase di scrittura, mi auguro di poter iniziare le riprese in autunno. La squadra è sempre la stessa, Attilio De Razza come produttore insieme a me e distribuzione dalla Medusa Film. Lei ha vissuto per tanti anni a Capri, l’isola ha influito sulla sua formazione? Sul mio aspetto umano e artistico. A Capri ci sono grandi maestri, primo fra tutti il maestro la Malfa. La musica poi l’ho scoperta qui, tramite mia sorella Ginevra e nella mia seconda casa, quella di Giuliana Faiella, dove Peppino di Capri produceva i suoi nuovi brani. I’d like to be able to dedicate more time to my creativity, but it’s not always possible; being present in the shop and developing rapport with our clients is important. Marica: Unlike Grazia, I’m more pragmatic—always looking for new ways to get organized and break down my tasks. In a nutshell, there’s always something I would change! What memories of the island do you carry with you all year round? Grazia: I live in Capri year-round. Here, winter is an enjoyable time for me to hibernate and pamper myself. Frequently, I’ll indulge in little getaways that bring the colors and scents of the island to mind. Marica: In Capri, each season is packed with pleasurable moments. I take the memories with me to Rome in the winter. High on the list is a well-deserved break in the Piazzetta at the end of a workday. FRANCESCA SETTANNI What does being an entrepreneur mean to you? I come from a matriarchal family and I’m very proud of it. My grandmother Mariuccia opened her boutique on the Piazzetta in 1906 when there still wasn’t much to be said about Italian fashion; she was inspired by Paris, and so she named the shop a La Parisienne. My mother Adriana, a true entrepreneur, at the end of the 1960s, decided to create a true artisan workshop, investing her capital in machines and 102 Capri | The Divine Coast

 Quali sono le vostre piacevoli abitudini?
 Marica: lunghe passeggiate solitarie che regalano grande energia e una mente più libera. 
 Cosa vi piace e cosa cambiereste nel vostro lavoro?
 Grazia: creare gioielli è la mia passione, vorrei riuscire a dedicare più tempo alla mia creatività ma non sempre è possibile, essere presenti in negozio ed avere rapporti con le nostre clienti è importante. 
 Marica: a differenza di Grazia io sono più pragmatica, sempre alla ricerca di una giusta organizzazione e ripartizione dei compiti. Insomma cambierei sempre qualcosa! Quali ricordi dell’isola vi accompagnano tutto l’anno? Grazia: io vivo a Capri tutto l’anno, qui l’inverno diventa un piacevole letargo in cui mi lascio coccolare. Spesso mi concedo delle piccole fughe portando nella mente e nel cuore i colori e i profumi dell’isola. Marica: A Capri ogni stagione è ricca di momenti piacevoli i cui ricordi mi accompagnano durante l’inverno che trascorro a Roma. Tra tutti la meritata sosta in Piazzetta a conclusione di una giornata lavorativa. FRANCESCA SETTANNI Cosa vuol dire per Lei essere una imprenditrice? Provengo da una famiglia matriarcale di cui sono molto orgogliosa e fiera. Mia D’Alessio (ph. Davide Esposito) technology and teaching the craft of seamstresses to generations of girls in Capri. She helped give them dignity and working professionalism in something that was usually done at home, in an absolutely male-dominated world, where women’s economic help had to stay hidden and remain within the confines of free time, without ever neglecting the family. So this was a woman’s world, run by women. For me, it’s absolutely normal. What do you like? Working in Capri is a major privilege—waking up to a breathtaking panoramic view, walking to get to work, breathing in the jasmine flowers in bloom. During warm weather the thing that I like most is getting to go on the boat every day, during my lunch break. The sea is my true passion. How do you spend the winter? In the family group I represent, one of my roles is being the buyer for three of the island’s boutiques: Fendi, Roberto Cavalli and my dear beloved Parisienne. During the winter, I travel around the world, doing buying work and stopping at trade fairs in search of new trends. I always try to make space for clients’ and friends’ requests to tour Aurora outside the island. This year Franco and I went to London with other staff members for a two-week pop up at My Fair. What do you think back on with a smile? Beautiful Sundays with Mamma Lucia’s ragoût. MARIOLÌ FEDERICO What guides you? Instinct! I’ve never made many calculations. I was lucky to land in an interactive professional industry where there are big, gratifying stimuli. Your vision of jewelry? A piece of jewelry rewards you not just when you buy it, but also with the passing of time, when you wear it and recognize that its intrinsic value justified your instinct and the choice you made. This repays you—when you notice that there are people who return to Capri and come to see you, you’ve created a rapport of trust and continuity. What bores you? Office work bores me a bit—I prefer the creative aspect and the relationships. I’ve hardly ever spent winter in Capri. I’ve always had part of my family in the United States and I’ve always spent significant time there each year, with my kids, too. Have you all always been closely connected to Americans? I see Americans as the children of the world, always managing to maintain enthusiasm in their eyes. They’re always wanting to upgrade their wardrobes with a purse, a sandal or a pair of new earrings. Il lavoro di ufficio un po’ mi annoia, preferisco l’aspetto creativo, le relazioni. L’inverno non l’ho quasi mai trascorso a Capri. Ho sempre avuto parte della mia famiglia negli Stati Uniti e ho sempre trascorso ogni anno diverso tempo li, anche con i miei figli. Siete sempre stati molto legati agli americani Vedo gli americani come i fanciulli del mondo. Riescono ad avere sempre l’entusiasmo negli occhi. Among the islands whose legend-like stories have been told over the centuries, Capri has certainly had an interesting destiny. Settled by the Greeks and chosen as a retreat by the Roman emperors from the Julius-Claudius dynasty, beginning with Augustus himself, the growth of the island’s fame seems to then level off, until the mid18th century. With its well-known distinguished discretion, its destiny as a resort island changed in this period and it was just barely touched by the Grand Tour and those seeking to enhance their knowledge on art and archaeology. Mimmo Oliviero devotes his book Alla ricerca di un’isola perduta. Territorio, percorsi e visioni della Capri del ‘700 (Searching for a lost island. Lands, itineraries and visions of 18th-century Capri) precisely to those fifty years when, according to some, the island’s contemporary period began, and focuses on the origin of the image of Capri as a resort destination, which admirably developed during the 19th and 20th centuries. Oliviero’s first book, published four years ago, was also about the island. This time he looks into the undeniable fact that the archaeological campaigns (arbitrary at the very least in a few cases) of the Bourbon sovereigns inevitably involved the island, where exciting archaeological digs were uncovering traces of the great imperial villas built for Octavian. During those years, as the author points out, much was published in the area of Naples, therefore Capri was most likely indirectly involved, also given the valuable existing topographic records showing the changes that occurred over the decades. Eppure in quegli anni, evidenzia l’autore della ricerca, nel Napoletano le attività editoriali si sommavano e indirettamente dovrebbe esserne stata interessata anche Capri, della quale peraltro esistono descrizioni topografiche preziose, che consentono di apprezzare i cambiamenti intervenuti attraverso i decenni. The art festival is ready for its third edition La rassegna d’arte pronta per la terza edizione

A thousand-year old vocation can’t always maintain the same forms and structures. And it is with this line of thought that, from September 9 to December 9, 2017, the third edition of itinerant art on the island will take place: Capri | The Island of Art. The open-air festival, which also this year will include Italian and international contemporary artists alike, invites you to interact with the most symbolic places of the Island. The festival will be held under the auspices of Franco Senesi (president of the namesake Cultural Association), in collaboration with the Città di Capri. The organizers are still keeping mum on who will be on the Island, with excitement abound considering the major charm and dedication demonstrated in the last edition by Sergio Risaliti, guest curator of the festival, who presented Capri Orient Express. The show included works by Marco Bagnoli, Domenico Bianchi and Remo Salvadori, which were displayed in the church of the Charterhouse of San Giacomo (with the Polo Museale of Campania) and at Villa Lysis. The title of the program traced a clear line of contact between Eastern and Middle-Eastern cultures, present in the works by the three artists. Marco Izzolino, artistic director of Capri | The Island of Art, started with a “zero” edition in 2014 and has since involved 50 artists and 67 works of public art, renewing a way to make art that is both shared and strongly rooted in the territory. Last year, in fact, installations from five young Italian artists were presented. Alessia Armeni interacted with tourists, offering them paint swatches, for her work Admire the whites of Capri; Daniela di Maro intersected Nature and Artifice in the piece Cuprum II - in honorem Jovis; Giuseppe Teofilo represented the centuries-old dialogue with the sea of his ancestors through Untitled (a hyperreal swordfish placed at the centre of the terrace of the Funicular); and Mermaid sculpture (sounder) by Francesco Carone echoed the myths of the Island. Ed è lungo questa linea di suggestione che - dal 9 settembre al 9 dicembre di questo 2017 - si svilupperà la terza edizione di arte itinerante sull’isola: Capri the Island of Art. La rassegna open air, che anche quest’anno coinvolge artisti italiani ed internazionali della scena contemporanea, invita a dialogare con i luoghi-simbolo dell’isola, sotto l’egida di Franco Senesi (presidente dell’Associazione culturale che dà il nome alla rassegna) in collaborazione con la Città di Capri. Gli organizzatori mantengono ancora un piacevole segreto sulle firme che giungeranno sull’Isola, soprattutto ricordando il fascino e l’impegno dimostrati nella scorsa edizione da Sergio Risaliti, guest curator del festival, che ha presentato Capri Orient Express con le opere di Marco Bagnoli, Domenico Bianchi e Remo Salvadori, esposte nella chiesa della Certosa di san Giacomo (col Polo Museale Regionale della Campania) e nella cornice di Villa Lysis. Il titolo della rassegna tracciava una linea netta di contatto tra la cultura orientale e quella mediorientale, presenti nelle opere dei tre artisti. Alessia Armeni ha interagito con i turisti offrendo un cartoncino per pittori dal titolo Am-mira i bianchi di Capri, Daniela di Maro ha intersecato Natura e Artificio nell’opera Cuprum II - in honorem Jovis; Giuseppe Teofilo ha presentato il secolare dialogo col mare della sua famiglia attraverso il suo Untitled (un pesce spada iperrealista piantato al centro della terrazza della Funicolare), mentre l’opera di Francesco Carone riecheggiava i miti isolani con Scultura Sirena (scandaglio). Un doppio progetto è stato infine quello di David Casini, uno diurno: Seicentodiecimilametri, e uno notturno: Come quando accadrà (una stella cometa artificiale sul Belvedere di Punta Tragara).

A photo published in 1975 in Vogue Paris shows the model Vibeke Knudsen in a deserted Rue Aubriot with her hair pulled back, holding a cigarette, a vacant look on her face. Androgynous and sensual, she is wearing the legendary Yves Saint Laurent striped tuxedo jacket and trousers. A woman posing like a man. It was sufficient to cry scandal and make the tuxedo-for-her iconic. It was taken by the German photographer Helmut Newton, born in 1920, authentic fashion photography revolutionary who had always considered magazines his main source of work. Criticism and controversies were a constant throughout his life. Many accused him of reducing female sensuality to a naked body, shown in a voyeuristic manner. E fino alla morte, avvenuta nel 2004, Newton ha vissuto e lavorato a stretto contatto con la moglie, Alice Springs (al secolo June Browne) anche lei fotografa. Resta il fatto che le sue immagini hanno fatto storia e i suoi scatti hanno contribuito a rendere immortale la carta stampata. June Browne, widow of the great photographer. It gathers 200 images from White Women, Sleepless Nights and Big Nudes, the first three books by Newton published at the end of the 1970s. In White Women, published in 1976, Newton chose 81 images (42 color and 39 black and white) and introduced for the first time nudity and eroticism in fashion photography. Poised between art and fashion, the photographs are mostly female nudes through which he presented contemporary fashion. These visions drew from works of art, in particular Goya’s Maya desnuda and Maya vestida, displayed at the Prado in Madrid. Sleepless Nights has a more retrospective character and gathers 69 photographs (31 color and 38 black and white) taken for different magazines (primarily Vogue). This book defined his style and turned him into a fashion photography icon. With Big Nudes Newton became the protagonist of the history of images of the second half of the 20th century. The 39 black-and-white photographs in Big Nudes inaugurated a new dimension in human photography, blow-ups, since then displayed in galleries and museums worldwide. L’esposizione, curata da Matthias Harder e Denis Curti è frutto di un progetto, nato nel 2011 per volontà di June Browne, vedova del grande fotografo. La rassegna raccoglie 200 immagini di White Women, Sleepless Nights e Big Nudes, i primi tre libri di Newton pubblicati alla fine degli anni ’70. In White Women, pubblicato nel 1976, Newton sceglie 81 immagini (42 a colori e 39 in bianco e nero), introducendo per la prima volta il nudo e l’erotismo nella fotografia di moda. In bilico tra arte e moda, gli scatti sono per lo più nudi femminili, attraverso i quali presentava la moda contemporanea. Queste visioni trovano origine nella storia dell’arte, in particolare nella Maya desnuda e nella Maya vestida di Goya, conservati al Prado di Madrid. Sleepless Nights è un volume a carattere più retrospettivo, raccoglie 69 fotografie (31 a colori e 38 in bianco e nero) realizzate per diversi magazine (Vogue, tra tutti) ed è quello che definisce il suo stile rendendolo un’icona della fashion photography.
