A LIAISON OF EXCELLENCE
Top five films on the lives of great artists Cinque grandi film sulla vita di incomparabili geni dell’arte These films, some of them bordering on documentary, chronicle the lives, the fragilities and successes of the artists who shaped the history of art. One of the most recent is the outstanding Turner (2014) by Mike Leigh, which captures the last years of the life of an already well-established William Turner, at the turn of the nineteenth century, through his daily life with his beloved father and his devoted assistant. The Cannes Film Festival awarded a splendid Timothy Spall for his interpretation in the lead role. Leigh frames the contradictions of being an artist, the difficult and conflicted relationship between a mortal and his eternal art, his weakness and his strength. Frida (2002) by the American director Julie Taymor, offers us one of the best interpretations by Salma Hayek. The Mexican actress brings passion and life to the stormy story of Frida Kahlo, from her years as a young student to her death, through the great misfortunes of the Mexican painter but also her strong desire for life and her relationship with the artist Diego Rivera . The soundtrack won a Golden Globe and an Oscar. In Pollock (2000), the American actor Ed Harris traces the life and career of the painter Jackson Pollock, from 1941, when he was still in search of success, through the encounter with Peggy Guggenheim, up to fame and his untimely death in an accident due to his chronic alcoholism. Surviving Picasso (1996), directed by James Ivory, tells of the life of the artist Pablo Picasso (played by Anthony Hopkins) from a point of view that differs from the art books: his private life, his feelings and his loves are told through the voice-over of Françoise Gilot (played by actress Natascha McElhone), the mistress with whom he had two children. Caravaggio (1986) by Derek Jarman, evocatively recreates the construction of the contrasts of light and shadow - the oil paintings of Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio. The Italian painter is played by Nigel Terry, in a relationship triangle involving his young model from a tavern, Ranuccio (Sean Bean), and the prostitute Lena, played by Tilda Swinton.
Sono film, alcuni al limite del documentario, che ripercorrono la vita, le fragilità e i successi di pittori che hanno fatto la storia dell’arte. Tra i titoli più recenti spicca Turner (2014) di Mike Leigh, che cattura gli ultimi anni di vita di un William Turner già abbastanza affermato, a cavallo dell’Ottocento, attraverso la sua quotidianità con il padre amato e suo devoto aiutante. Il Festival di Cannes ha premiato l’interpretazione del protagonista, uno splendido Timothy Spall. Leigh inquadra le contraddizioni di essere artista, il rapporto difficile e conflittuale tra un comune mortale e la sua arte eterna, tra la sua fragilità e la sua forza. Surviving Picasso (1996), diretto da James Ivory, narra la vita dell’artista Pablo Picasso (interpretato da Anthony Hopkins) sotto un punto di vista diverso da quello che i libri d’arte raccontano: la sua vita privata, i suoi sentimenti e i suoi amori vengono raccontati tramite la narrazione fuori campo di Françoise Gilot (interpretata dall’attrice Natascha McElhone), sua amante, dalla quale ha avuto due figli. Caravaggio (1986) di Derek Jarman ricrea in maniera evocativa la costruzione dei contrasti di luce - luminosità e ombra - dei dipinti ad olio di Michelangelo Merisi, noto come il Caravaggio.
