DEADLY One of the most violent and deadly storms ever to strike Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) arrived on July 5, 2012, as visitor numbers peaked, campgrounds were filled to capacity, and thousands of vehicles coursed along park roads. Ultimately, the storm ravaged the park’s extreme western region, causing fatalities and becoming a breaking story in the national news. With radios knocked out of service, limited phone coverage, and main roads choked off by fallen trees, the park service and its partnering agencies got creative in mobilizing a response.
