On May 23, 1903, Horatio Jackson and Sewall Crocker left San Francisco to drive to New York City.

The 2 men got set. They had a wish— to cross the U.S. in a car. Could they be the first?

1

Zig, zag, zip.

2

They had to rush! But the path had a lot of bumps.

3

POP! It was a flat!

4

They had to fix it. 5

DIP! It was a pit!

6

They had to tug to get out of the mud.

7

Pip, pip, pip . . . The gas!

8

They had to stop . . . a lot.

9

The men met Bud the dog!

10

And they met a lot of helpers. 11

On and on and on, in fog and mud and sun.

12

Chug, chug, chug. They did not quit.

13

And . . . they did it! It was the first car to get that far.
