“Sit, sit.”

“Let me tell you a story. Anansi had a wish for a big lunch. But he did not wish to fix it.”

“My pal! Can I get a lick?”

“It is not hot yet. But you can mix it.”

“I do not mix. That is not a job for me! Tug on my web when the pot is hot.

“OK. See you in a bit!”

“My pal! Can I get a lick?”

“It is not thick yet. But you can chop up this yam.”

“I do not chop. That is not a job for me! Tug on my web when the mix is thick.

“OK. See you in a bit!”

“Such luck! I can get a bit from this pal and that pal . . . ”

Tug! Tug!

“Ack, my legs! Get this web off!”

SPLASH!

“He had a wish for a big lunch. But he did not wish to help.”

“Now his 8 legs are long and thin!”

Anansi the Spider is a trickster from west African folklore. He is not real, but he is like a real spider in some ways. For example, real spiders have special body parts that spin threads called silk. These body parts are at the back of a spider’s body and are called spinnerets. Spiders stick a bit of silk to a surface and walk away. This action pulls a thread of silk from the spinneret. All spider silk is strong and stretchy, but spiders can make different types of silk. Some is sticky and some is not. Spiders use sticky silk to make webs that trap insects. Spiders use other silk to make draglines. Draglines let spiders dangle in the air. Some spiders also wrap their egg sacs in silk to keep them safe.

“Anansi had a wish for a big lunch.

But he did not wish to fix it.”
