DINE AROUND THE CLOCK

a day of good eats in Fayette County

By Ruth Corradi Beach

Breakfast

For a perfectly balanced start to the day (sweet but not cloying, with just enough perk), grab yourself a hot or iced house-specialty Cubano — espresso, cream and homemade simple syrup — at Vinyl Coffee, along with an order of decadent hazelnut and strawberry toast. Or swing by Outside the Box Café, where breakfast is served till 2 p.m. and every breakfast menu item includes a side of grits (even the chocolate-syruptopped Fancy Cakes!). Don’t miss the donuts at Atkinson’s Bakery, where nearly 50 years of experience in Washington Court House is baked in to every made-from-scratch goodie. Bring home a loaf of their cream bread for lighter-than-air toast all week long. Our Place Restaurant is another ideal place to start your day, thanks to their homestyle offerings of everything from oatmeal to sausage gravy on Texas toast.

There are so many lunch options at Capuana’s Delicatessen that you’ll just have to promise yourself to come back — maybe have the Sicilian pasta salad one day and try the Whole Hog sandwich, with houseroasted pork loin, the next. Grab a slice or a whole pie at Super Sport Pizza & Wings, or think outside the (pizza) box and try a half pound of wings smothered in D.B. Yummers BBQ Sauce, a local favorite made by a family-owned business. The Rusty Keg Tavern offers enough choices to keep a whole crowd happy, from pepper pot calamari and seared ahi tuna salad to a hand-cut rib-eye sandwich. El Dorado Mexican Restaurant also has a whole range of choices, including a tasty tortilla soup and burritos served eight different styles, with filling choices for each.

Dinner

Dig into a decked-out burger, rib-eye steak or hand-breaded haddock after a round or two of golf at Champions Grill at the Greens Golf Course. Indulge in hibachi combination plates featuring chicken, steak, shrimp or lobster and try specialty sushi rolls that you won’t be able to get enough of at Ohayo Hibachi Grill. Streetside 62 Bistro offers appetizers including mac & cheese bites and onion straws that are made for sharing (though you might want to keep it all for yourself!), which are terrific preludes to the spicy jalapeño burger or sweet & spicy pork chops. Salty Broads Patio is a bright outdoor space that feels exactly like hanging out with friends on their patio, except no one in your party needs to be running in and out to refresh everybody’s drinks.

If you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, look no further. Two Scoops of Sugar offers brownies and flavored cupcakes that are just as sweet as the name implies. Or try a slice of red velvet cake and an adorably decorated cookie from Country Cakes & Bakes Main St. Creamery’s central location, as well as its outstanding ice cream, makes it an ideal place to end a day of exploring Washington Court House.
