Gopal Balakrishnan, a distinguished scholar with expertise in modern European intellectual history, political theory, philosophy, and economic history, began his higher education at Cornell University, graduating as a College Scholar in 1989. He later completed his Ph.D. in Modern European History in 1998. Subsequently, he received the Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University Institute and the Harper Schmidt Fellowship at the University of Chicago. Balakrishnan’s education was characterized by a robust engagement with various disciplines that informed his later works. This interdisciplinary formation is in evidence in his first book, "The Enemy: An Intellectual Portrait of Carl Schmitt," which provided the first comprehensive account of this author’s legal and political writings. He followed this with "Antagonistics: Capitalism and Power in an Age of War," whose essays explore the predicaments of both the inter-state order and the sovereign state form in these late capitalist times.   As an editor, Balakrishnan assembled influential collections of contributions from leading scholars on nationalism and the new world order of globalization entitled "Mapping the Nation" and "Debating Empire."
