GOODSPEED’S MISSION STATEMENT Goodspeed Musicals’ mission is to share the joy of musical theatre; to delight, inspire, and challenge audiences; to nurture creators; and to build and support a broad, diverse, and inclusive community.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The land on which Goodspeed Musicals is located in East Haddam and Chester, CT is the ancestral land of at least three tribes of Native Americans—the Wangunk, the Mohegan and the Nehantic tribes. We understand that the land which is now Haddam and East Haddam, was purchased from the native people in 1662 for thirty coats—worth about $100. We acknowledge those native Americans and the loss of their homeland—land on which we thrive today. GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2023 SEASON 9

the new musicals Because of Winn Dixie, Chasing Rainbows, Amazing Grace, Anne of Green Gables and this season’s Summer Stock and The 12. At The Terris Theatre, she led the early development of many new musicals, among them, The Circus In Winter, Passing Through and Band Geeks!. With the development of Hi, My Name Is Ben, she led Goodspeed’s first collaboration with a resident theatre outside the US—Scotland’s Dundee Rep Theatre. Donna Lynn led the creation of the Johnny Mercer Writers Grove, the partnership with the Johnny Mercer Foundation which welcomes nearly 50 musical theatre composers, lyricists and librettists to Goodspeed’s campus each winter and has become one of the premiere development opportunities available to emerging musical theatre writers. She led an expansion of Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals and through the Festival brought to Goodspeed the first US development of the international hit Come From Away. Donna Lynn is a past-president of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. She serves as a Trustee for Dundee Rep Theatre/Scottish Dance Ensemble and, closer to home, CT Landmarks. Donna Lynn began her career as a stage manager of Musical Theatre and Opera and remains a proud member of Actors Equity Association. She and her husband, Sound Designer Jay Hilton, make their home in Hadlyme with Cookie and Macy. ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION, founded in 1913, represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers in the US. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Equity seeks to foster the art of live theater as an essential component of our society. Sets, costumes, and props are designed especially for The Goodspeed and are built in Goodspeed Musicals’ shops. Goodspeed Musicals is a professional theatre operating under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. Orchestra members are represented by The Connecticut Valley Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 400. Goodspeed Musicals is a member of The League of Resident Theatres. The scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers in LORT Theatres are represented by United Scenic Artists, Local USA-829 of the IATSE.

PROGRAM NOTES BY MARSHALL PAILET, Writer & Director | ALEXANDRIA WAILES, Director of Artistic Sign Language Hi! We’re a company of hearing, deaf and hardof-hearing artists who’ve come to tell you a story we think is cool. The show is inspired by the (probably) true story of a deaf Welsh sniper in WWI, and it tells the story mostly from his perspective. He’s recently lost his hearing, so he speaks and reads lips, allowing him to navigate a Marshall Pailet hearing environment. To illustrate his emotional life we use live, onstage, actor-driven sound foley. Everyone plays Welsh soldiers, everyone plays nurses, everyone plays deaf factory workers. In our world, everyone is everything. Like the real world, ours is funny at times. And heart-warming at others. And at other times, brutal in its indifference. What we’re interested in exploring is what happens to the mind and spirit when it’s asked to commit violence, and how that relates to how we value each other—how we do and don’t empathize with people we don’t understand. Which is a fun challenge for a hearing and deaf company creating a show for both a hearing and deaf audience. Let’s talk about music. Music does a lot in a musical—it gives energy, it creates characterization, it conveys emotion. This show is basically 90% music, but not all of our audience will hear it—so we are consciously making the show look like it sounds, so that every

audience member gets the same emotional experience. We think about that in choreography, design, but especially in our use of the sound foley—how we use it, where we use it, what it represents, all of it has to be so carefully calibrated to be both beautiful and clear. Now let’s talk sign language. Our goal is to authentically reflect lived experiences through different cultures and signed languages, to let that authenticity inform our story but also allow ourselves creative license. Ultimately our goal is to have every performance be fully accessible, all the while honoring the integrity that this story is told through Gomer Jones’ eyes—a boy who doesn’t know sign language until he’s confronted with it. With this in mind, we note that the centuries of histories of deaf people around the world vary. Signed languages differ—even across the pond. In the world of this musical, we are creating space for both American Sign Language and British Sign Language. Alexandria Wailes

Though our story is specific in its perspective, our goal is to make it feel absolutely universal: where everyone in the audience, hearing and deaf, all of us empathize with Gomer—his dreams are ours, his shame is ours, and so too his triumph over cynicism and dehumanization. Everyone is everything.
