T

Goodbye 2009; Hello 2010!

his issue of Genlux afforded us the delightful opportunity to work with legendary stylist, Mr. Freddie Leiba. Leiba, who has styled Drew Barrymore, Beyoncé, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek, Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, and on and on, for countless covers including Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, InStyle, and Vanity Fair, teamed up with photographer Andrew Southam to capture our lovely cover model, Mila Kunis (p.74). You may recognize Mila from her days on television’s “That 70s Show” and, more recently, in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Taking the honors for the most hours spent working on a fashion story (and make that times two) is photographer Andrew Matusik, who created two masterpiece fashion stories for this issue. His homage to Salvador Dali, (Hello, Dali!, p.46) is insanely genius. Study these images carefully and you’ll see many hidden gems. Matusik’s other artful piece is a fantasy wedding on Antarctica’s Larsen Ice Shelf (Vows on Ice, p.82). As we round 2009 and head into 2010, I’d like to acknowledge and thank all the talented people who helped make Genlux such a gorgeous magazine, and especially to the photographers and stylists who have contributed to our pages over the last year, and some, as noted below, to this issue in particular: Genlux 2009 photographers: Erik Ålmas (p.36), Chris Baldwin, Marc Baptiste, Michael Barr, Sarah Cresswell, Michael Elins, Shannon Greer, Andrew Matusik (pgs.46, 82), Machado Cicala Morassut, Tracey Morris (p.64), Melissa Rodwell, Paul Schefz (p.56), Caroline Schiff, Andrew Southam (p.74), Alberto Tolot, Alexo Wandael, Elizabeth Waugh (p.30), and Ming Wu.

I would definitely add perfume to the list. For me, perfume is an essential part of fashion, and last month I was fortunate enough to meet with Francis Kurkdjian, who is known among the small world of fragrance aficionados as one of the greatest living perfumers. In 2001, he opened his atelier in Paris to create custom fragrances for a select private clientele. Francis says the process of creating a custom fragrance is fascinating. “Like a piece of custom-made clothing, the scent is tried, altered and refined until it fits the client perfectly.” After years of conjuring top-selling perfumes, he now launches his own fragrance house, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, which is available exclusively at Neiman Marcus. My favorite scent is Aqua Universalis. (p.28) Go get it, it is absolutely magical!

20 GENLUX WINTER / 2009

It’s almost the end of the year, and time to think about where to spend New Year’s Eve. I suggest you check out Las Vegas. It’s come a long way since its cheezier days, and you don’t need to gamble to have a good time (I know...I don’t). There are more and more wonderful hotels, the spas are so luxurious, the shopping is insane (p.110), and all the top chefs have opened restaurants there. One of the nicer new properties is the Palazzo (p.110 ). It’s my pleasure to present to you our fantasy-themed issue, in which we’ve given ourselves and others license to travel to the wilder shores of the imagination. Once again, our amazing dream team of photographers, fashion stylists, makeup artists and hair stylists have done an exceptional job . Now go, fashion divas! Enjoy our beautiful fantasy issue!

With a full moon hanging over an unseasonally clear and warm late October evening, the Genlux staff, along with 300 well-wishers, celebrated the release of its Fall fashion issue on the open-air rooftop of the Luxe Rodeo Drive Hotel. They munched on yummy apps by Café Rodeo chef Jesse Meguideche and sipped beverages by Ventura Limoncello’s lemon liqueur, Penta water, and Kröl Vodka with Hansen’s mixers. Crumbs Bake Shop, courtesy of their mouthwatering decadent cupcakes, supplied the late-night sugar rush.

We go behind the scenes to reveal how our creative team achieved Mila Kunis’ cover look! Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Brunet, $23.50, Bloomingdale’s, Westfield Century City, 310-772-2100

DAVID TIBOLLA with NEXT ARTISTS on MILA’s LOOK: “Mila has a dazzling wit and a sparkling personality, so to match that we decided to play up her makeup by focusing on her eyes. A bit of liner on her eyes, a touch of color on her cheeks, and a sheer nude gloss on her lips brought out her playful, sexy siren.” CHEEK:

EYE: “To perfectly accentuate her almond eyes, I started by shaping her brows with Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Brunet. I then followed by lightly applying Shiseido Hydro Powder Eye Shadow in H1 Goldlights all over her eyelid to create a base. To add a touch of depth I then applied Rock & Republic Eye Shadow in Diffused in the crease of her lid and M•A•C Eye Shadow in Vapour to her browbone for highlight. To add drama I applied Rock & Republic Gel Eyeliner in Bound at the base of her lashes and winged it out slightly. For the finished effect I applied Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Black.” David Tibolla / Next Artists using Rock & Republic Cosmetics

By Marsha Takeda-Morrison

ere’s a heads-up for any of you paparazzi out there trying to get an early morning shot of Mila Kunis: don’t expect the dark-haired cutie who played the girl-that-got-the-boy in Forgetting Sarah Marshall to get glammed up for your sake—Kunis would rather get some extra shut-eye than primp for your cameras. “If I cared enough I’d probably wake up and put makeup on, but I haven’t been able to condition myself to think that way,” the actress says, almost apologetically. “I wish I were more of the person who was like, ‘Hmmm…I’m going to step outside so I need to be put together.’ But no, doesn’t quite happen! I would rather sleep in.” If you do get that picture of her at breakfast, whatever you do, don’t go for the hair shot. “What I don’t understand—although I respect those who do this—is women who wake up every morning and blow-dry their hair. That to me is absolutely insane! To do that or to be able to sleep in an extra 30 minutes? Wouldn’t even be a question.” And Kunis isn’t about to spend those extra few minutes obsessing about what’s in her closet, either. While she names Marchesa and Alexander McQueen as two of her favorites, she loves the look, not the label. “I don’t put much thought into my personal style, to be very honest. I think if it looks good on you, then you should wear it. I think people who are looked upon as fashion icons and people who wear interesting, quirky outfits, as long as they love it, as long as they feel comfortable in it, that’s all that really matters. Fashion is in the eye of the beholder.” For Kunis, that fashion may very well be found in an unexpected place: one aisle over from the detergents and frozen foods. When I ask her where she would spend $500 to quickly pull together an outfit, she doesn’t hesitate before answering. “Target! I’ve worn Target on the red carpet. Fashion goes in and out so fast. I can see spending money on a really great black dress, or splurging on a really great pair of shoes, but when it comes to everything else, there’s no need to. There’s nothing wrong with a little Gap and a little Target.” There’s no doubt that, besides Kunis, one of the stars of “That ‘70’s Show” was the retro wardrobe. Only the strongest among us could resist the urge to rush out and buy a fringed leather vest after watching a few episodes. But Kunis, who played cheerleader Jackie Burkhart on the Fox sitcom, was less than enthusiastic about the pieces she wore. “They were fine. They were polyester. They were there,” she deadpans. Any chance all those flowered bell-bottoms and hippieskirts might have made it into her off-set wardrobe? “No, not at all,” she answers, and I pick up a hint of annoyance in her voice. “That’s like asking a doctor if she wears her scrubs when she goes to dinner. Probably not.” She’s right. Like asking whether to sleep or blow-dry, it was a silly question. G

genlux EDITOR AT LARGE

It’s in giving that we receive. —George Blodwell I love this time of the year. This is the season when the heart is listening, as well as the mind; we give more of ourselves to others, and most of us will express genuine feelings of gratitude, forgive past indiscretions, give gifts, and welcome the New Year. How nice is that? If anyone knows my look, they know I always love a good coat, and this season’s Prada number, a classic with a twist, is no exception. I also selected the Prada black leather–fronted sweater with knit sleeves. Try one on—you will love it! (Black leather is quite de rigueur at the moment.) Are there any fashion guys out there who can remember the late eighties, in particular Romeo Gigli? Well, he’s back—and as brilliant as ever. Those who know will hunt down his new collection with glee, and snag a great suit.

The discerning eye will always find its way to your shoes and watch. For superb quality and style, you have to know about De Grisogono, one of my favorite jewelers. These watches are in much demand among the cognoscenti here and abroad. They have style up the yin-yang. Alternatively, check out the Rolex with the customized chain strap with wood inserts. Unique and cool—do you dare? For the refined and rich, Tom Ford’s alligator shoe is breathtaking and will remain stylish forever. If you want to peacock, I have two shoe choices that will definitely do the trick. They are only for the confident—a man who is secure in his masculinity, and a bit of a wild one. Stay happy and feel the love. Happy Holidays!

THE TRAINER:

Celebrity trainer Teddy Bass (teddybass.com), whose clients include Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Ali Larter, offers up some helpful holiday fitness tips: 1. Use your time wisely. This time

Teddy Bass

of year is always hectic, so make sure you get in some cardiovascular work—treadmill, elliptical, jump rope— every day, even if it’s only for 20 minutes; whatever you can do

to get that heart rate up. Circuit training is a great way to elevate your heart rate and get some strength training in. Try doing dips, squats, lunges, or pushups while focusing on burning calories by using the larger muscle groups, then finish off your workout with abdominal exercises. Put exercise on your calendar, please! 2. Pick a few good outfits for this season’s parties, and I

guarantee you will not miss that gym time or want those late-night snacks. No matter where you live, fitted clothing is in. 3. Choose wisely the time you decide to arrive at an event or party, and be aware—

is your host serving dinner or passing appetizers? Passed food gets consumed in quantity because you’re drinking and don’t realize how many times your hand reaches for the tray.

Lisa Jay is on her way up. This spring, She’s set to star in a feature film with John Goodman and Joe Pantoliano. Here, we find out she’s got some serious style. Since an appearance on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” launched Lisa Jay’s television career, she’s appeared on everything from “Two and a Half Men” to “CSI: NY.” This spring, look for her on the big screen in Spring Break ’83. Depending on my mood: eclectic, classy, sexy, or laid-back—with a little bit of Silver Lake.

Describe your personal style.

What message do your clothes give the world about you?

That the new age of fashion can actually be less concerned with how other people think of you, and more concerned with how it makes you feel good about yourself.

Do you overpack or underpack?

I like to think that I’m right on the money, since I’ve had so much practice. I recently traveled to Iraq as a part of No Kidding, Me Too!’s Stomp the Stigma Tour and had limits to what I could pack, so I made different outfits out of the same garments, like using a scarf as a shawl one day, tied at the waist the next. Anita Ko, jewelry designer, Anita Ko, LA

I would describe my style of shopping as thoughtful. I wasn’t always, and ended up owning a lot of things I never used. Now I ask myself, “Will I wear it?” and “Do I see myself wearing or using it in the future?” I try to buy things that are of higher quality that will last longer and will still be chic as I get older. WHERE ARE YOU SHOPPING? In Los Angeles I shop everywhere— from Barneys and Neiman Marcus to Planet Blue in Malibu. Maxfield has the best everything! I love Lily et Cie on Burton Way. Petro Zillia has some fun things for when you want to go out and get a party-girl dress. I have a few vintage dealers who also bring pieces to my house; they often have the coolest furs, jewelry, and dresses. In New York, I just picked up some cool Phillip Lim, Yigal Azrouël, and Alexander Wang stuff at Blue & Cream. My favorite place in New York is Jeffrey; it’s such a great store. Bergdorf ’s Petro Zillia, is amazing, and my great friend Jenny Cohen Reseal also 8218 W. 3rd St, has some of the best things. She’s by appointment only. 323-653-3080,

My recent purchases have been Goyard for bags, Phillip Lim dresses, a Chanel dress with the hemline shortened by three inches, Frette sheets, Valentino python bags, and Christian Louboutin high heels in rose gold—all topped off with my diamond spike bracelets. At home I just bought a Japanese money cat for $3 at an estate sale. He’s so cute! WHAT ARE YOU BUYING LATELY?

Right now I’m craving the Hermès Birkin in raisin with gold hardware, Cartier Ballon Bleu—midsize in rose gold with diamonds, and Cartier Santos 100 in rose gold with diamonds and burgundy alligator band.

They are pieces that are necklace, $385, incredibly sentimental, and some are seemingly gross by marquisandtoday’s standards. Many pieces are made with woven camus.com human or horse hair that is sometimes hidden in the back of a locket or under a piece of quartz. Lately, I’ve been sourcing them out in consignment shops along the central coast.

I’d love to say I’m craving some wildly creative or hip accessory right now, but I’m a traditionalist with my goods—and I’m too tired from making my new line to have the alacrity (and irony) to be hip! Swarovski Kristallwelten theme park, Innsbruck, Austria

The sparkle on a designer dress. The shimmer of a chandelier. The shine of a teardrop earring hanging from a starlet’s ear. Is there anything that conjures up the idea of fantasy more than crystal? Not according to Nadja Swarovski. The descendant of the world’s most influential crystal dynasty, Swarovski, has brought her unique vision to the Austrian company founded by her great-great-grandfather Daniel in 1895. “Growing up on the doorstep of Swarovski headquarters exposed me to the products from an early age,” recalls Swarovski. “My father used to bring home the latest prototypes of crystal, so my sister and I would play with all the facets and light effects.” Although Swarovski always felt a strong connection to her family’s company, she was determined to forge her own path in the world. In her early twenties, she moved to New York to pursue fashion public relations, and a stint with legendary Fashion Week founder Eleanor Lambert opened her eyes to the true potential of her family’s product. “That was the trigger for me to step back into Swarovski and give something from my perspective, by returning to our roots and to the days when my grandfather worked with Coco Chanel and Christian Dior.” In the late 1990s, Swarovski set out to reintroduce crystal to the world of couture. She became something of a fairy godmother to promising young designers, investing in their labels both monetarily and with supplies of her product. The strategy paid off, and by the start of the millennium, Britain’s most cuttingedge designers, including Alexander McQueen and Julien Macdonald, were using Swarovski crystal in their designs.

A decade later, Swarovski continues that partnership through Atelier Swarovski. She names the Shannon necklace and cuff by Giles Deacon, one of her original ingénues, as her favorite piece from the collection. And Deacon’s show during Paris Fashion Week 2009 exhibited a new trend, using Swarovski crystal as an element in its own right, illustrated by a gown adorned with large threedimensional insects composed of 400,000 crystal beads. Swarovski’s ambitions, however, did not end with the conquering of the fashion world. Over the years, she has popularized the use of crystal in architecture, technology, and everyday items. Her Crystal Palace Collection has produced some of the most awe-inspiring light fixtures in the world. These pieces can be seen in the Bazaar of the SLS Hotel, where the Blossom by Tord Boontje and the Glitterbox by Georg Baldele are prominently displayed. Swarovski has also reinvigorated the company’s partnership with the entertainment industry, providing a little extra glitz in the upcoming Sex and the City 2, the Michael Jackson tribute This is It, and Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” music video. The company even has its own theme park, Kristallwelten, in Innsbruck, Austria. Created by artist Andre Heller in 1995, Kristallwelten boasts fourteen subterranean “Chambers of Wonder” and has attracted more than eight million visitors. “It’s a magical experience,” says Swarovski, “as well as a forum for the avant-garde and a space of fantasy.” So where does the reigning queen of ice predict we will see crystal next? Swarovski’s coy reply: “The sky’s the limit.”

Here, you’ll find your usual fashion escapes like Jimmy Choo, Fendi, Bottega Veneta, Guerlain, and now, the brand-new Barneys New York. The Palazzo Las Vegas, with its Italian Renaissance architecture, is a sumptuous resort-hotel-casino of unparalleled sophistication. To increase the odds of your calling in sick on Monday, the Palazzo’s nearly four acres of beautiful pools, four Jacuzzi spas, gardens, and gorgeous fountains create a tranquil sanctuary for relaxation—paradise on earth.

Tempting us further, the Palazzo’s weekly poolside fashion shows display the latest in gorgeous fashion from The Shoppes at The Palazzo’s top retailers. Without a prayer to resist this fashion onslaught, you’ll have to relent. At the Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry store, you’ll find the most exquisite piece you’ve ever laid your glassy eyes on: the zip Pompom white gold and diamond necklace. Only the strongest-willed could leave Christian Louboutin’s boutique without picking up a pair of his new knee-high boots. And if the Piaget Possession in 18K white gold brushes your wrist, good luck ever taking it off. What a weekend! Wait a minute—was it fantasy or reality? Need to check out my bank statement...oh, boy!

The Shoppes at The Palazzo

The Palms Pink Suite at Fantasy Tower No fantasy visit to Las Vegas would be complete without a stay at the Palms Casino Resort Fantasy Tower. There is a customized suite to cater to whatever your fantasy might be. The Palms also boasts a fantastic array of restaurants and nightclubs, plus a spa, concert theater, recording studio and, of course, the 95,000-square-foot casino. Stuart Gavert, Christian Serratos, Mika Fowler Love the hair of your favorite stars from Twilight? Now the man behind their signature hair color, Stuart Gavert of Gavert Atelier Salon in Beverly Hills, is offering his clients the same coloring process, called “Twilights.” The process involves the layering of dark and light colors away from the hair root to create the illusion of depth, unlike normal highlights, which look grown-out and dated within a month. $150–$300, depending on hair length. Celebrity clients include New Moon stars Christian Serratos, Robert Pattinson, and Kristen Stewart, and Samaire Armstrong, AnnaLynne McCord, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Christina Applegate. 9666 Brighton Way, Beverly Hills, 310-858-7898, gavertatelier.com

Bliss, whose innovative, spa-strength products—from The Youth As We Know It concentrate to the Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask—have revolutionized the skincare regimens of countless beautyconscious women, has finally arrived on the Eastside with the unveiling of the 6,000-square-foot, two-story Bliss location at the new W Hollywood. Bliss Hollywood features seven treatment rooms, a posh nail lounge with two mani and pedi stations, Bliss’s famous brownie buffet, and a retail boutique where you can pick up such perennial faves as Bliss’s Fabulous Foaming Face Wash and Lemon+Sage Body Butter. It’s nothing short of…blissful. Bliss Hollywood at W Hollywood, 6282 Hollywood Blvd, LA, 90028, 877-TOBLISS

Frédéric Fekkai’s Beverly Hills salon recently merged with his Melrose Place location to become the official West Coast flagship Fekkai salon. The expanded two-story space will include a retail boutique. 8457 Melrose Place, LA, 323-655-7800, fekkai.com

Brentwood is now home to Studio Alexandria LA, offering advanced body-sugaring treatments that safely and gently remove unwanted hair using the Alexandria technique: Sugar paste extracts hair in its natural direction of growth and does not burn the skin. It’s safe for all skin types and does not breed bacteria, so it’s extremely sanitary. 11740 San Vicente Blvd, Suite 105, LA, 310-492-5070, studioalexandriala.com

The Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group’s Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour is offering a new procedure that’s perfect for those who want to banish laugh lines or plump their lips, but are afraid of needles. Currently in clinical trials in Dr. Forouzanpour’s office, the procedure involves a new device that delivers a filler— hyaluronic acid—into the skin using a high-pressure oxygen stream instead of needles. This process minimizes the pain, bruising, and swelling that sometimes accompany needle injections. Dr. Fardad Forouzanpour, Beverly Hills, 310-360-0504, perfectself.com

massages, peels, and injectables. The KaplanMD Facial Spa Exclusively at Studio Mix at Fred Segal, 310-394-8509, studiobeautymix.com

Dr. David Amron and Dr. Paul Nassif are excited to announce the arrival of Dysport—recently approved by the FDA for muscle relaxation—which means that when it comes to smoothing away wrinkles, there is now an alternative to Botox. Similar to Botox, Dysport is a modified version of botulinum toxin A that’s administered by injection and inhibits the facial muscle contractions that lead to forehead furrows, frown lines, and crow’s feet. And you’ll be in good hands: Both Dr. Amron and Dr. Nassif have more than a decade of experience with botulinum toxin and are on the National Education faculty for Botox. BEAUTY HAIR DO’S

gENLUXshop TRESSED TO KILL

IT’s that time for a swirl of parties and galas. Here, some of LA’s hair experts TELL how to get the perfect look for any kind of fête. —DAWN SHAND JOHNSON THE MASQUERADE BALL “You have to decide what sort of look you are going for when choosing your hairstyle for a masquerade. You can do a more traditional, costume-like hairstyle, or something more modern and romantic. Both work well, as your mask and dress will tie everything together.

Michael Shaun Corby Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Flexible Hold Hair Spray, $24, studiobeautymix.com

THE CHARITY GALA “Because you want to look glamorous but Clay Patane not too ‘done up’ for a charity gala, the hottest look is the large spiraled ribbon look. You can start with pre-blown-out hair or quick-dried hair. Just take sections starting at the bottom and back of the head about an inch or larger and the width of your flatiron. Place the flatiron closest to the scalp, close it, flip it once downwards then pull away from your head like curling a ribbon on a gift. The faster you do it the larger the spiral. You can pull your bangs over to the side or pull the sides up for a glamorous charity-gala “do.” Shake your hair out later for that tousled, casual look. Plus, a style done with a flatiron will last for a week—or at least through a great event.” —Clay Patane, owner, The Loft Hair Lounge

“A great place to start is by curling the hair; most masquerade hairstyles involve curls. Blow-dry hair straight with a round brush then use a mediumbarrel curling iron or hot rollers to curl the entire head. From there, you can create a half-up style by pinning some of the curls back; you can pin all the curls up, allowing some to fall down by the face; or you can wear the hair down. Traditionally, the look is to keep the curls intact, and not break them up too much, as ringlets are commonly seen at masquerade balls. Finish with a healthy dose of hairspray to make sure the style stays all night long.” —Michael Shaun Corby, global creative director, Alterna Professional Haircare

THE BLACK AND WHITE BALL “Hair should radiate elegance—plus a dramatic effect. Two looks to consider are hair slicked back into a low ponytail and super-straight, flowing strands. Apply David Babaii for WildAid Hair Polish before brushing hair back. The ponytail should be flatironed and perfectly pin straight. Finish with a hair accessory in black or white (opposite of your dress color). Or, flatiron hair into a dramatic straight style, using Hair Polish for shine, and part tresses from the highest point of your eyebrow to the back for a side-swept look. You can use a small hair clip to secure or let hair drape naturally for that dramatic look.” —Celebrity hairdresser David Babaii for WildAid

THE NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH

Patrice Bisiot

THE COCKTAIL PARTY “A half-up, half-down style retains sophistication and elegance and is user-friendly. A few bobby pins matching the hair color, a little bit of teasing around the crown area, et voilà! Another option is to use a wide-barrel curling iron for a soft, undone look. A gentle curl frames the face beautifully. As another evening option, take a few curls in and finish off with a shine spray for a nighttime glow.” —Patrice Bisiot, industry-leading stylist, Juan Florentino Salon, Beverly Hills, patricebisiot.com Mixed Chicks Hair Silk finishing product is excellent for curl management and looks great with any style, $11.99, mixedchics.net

“I would go for a retro look. Curl the hair with a curling iron up and over, and work the pieces in the front to give the hair lift and fullness. Work it into an exaggerated part and pin the hair over to the side. [Neil George’s] Indian Gooseberry Oil would be a great product to use for an up-do such as this, as it’s smoothing and nourishing.” —Neil Weisberg, co-owner, Neil George Salon Neil George Indian Gooseberry Oil, $42, Neil George Salon, 310-275-2808, neilgeorgesalon.com

This winter’s look is ethereal, fresh, and otherworldly—and with these tips, easily accomplished. Here, NARS International Lead Makeup Artist Uzo Ukaeje constructs this season’s ethereal look step by step.—Dawn Shand Johnson

EYES: OTHERWORLDLY

“Ethereal eye makeup should be kept light. To achieve it, smudge and blend NARS Danceteria Glitter Pencil, a delicate peach pencil with gold glitter, on the entire eyelid. Sweep a shimmering champagne or rosegold powder eyeshadow, like NARS Silk Road Duo Eyeshadow, lightly over the lids with a shadow brush to set and enhance the color.”—UZO Ukaeje

FACE: GLOWING La Prairie Cellular Radiance Cream Blush, $70, Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills, 310-5505900; Nordstrom at The Grove, 323-930-2230

LIPS: NUDE “On the runway, lips are kept nude and matte by using a flesh-toned concealer. While the look is edgy and mod during a fashion show, it can appear chalky and dry in the real world. To re-create a more wearable option, use a beige-toned lipstick with a matte finish. NARS Belle De Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil has the consistency of a lipstick but stays put like a lip pencil, providing the ultimate matte without drying the lips.”

122 GENLUX WINTER / 2009

“To achieve a wide-eyed and wispy-lashed look, glue individual false lashes to the outer corners of the eyes, or for a retro look, only to the lower lashes. To keep it simple, layer a single coat of lengthening mascara that will delicately enhance the lashes without giving them bulk.”

int has been used for centuries to help treat everything from itchy skin to sinus congestion. The essential oil of mint—menthol—contains numerous vitamins and minerals, such as folic acid, thiamine, calcium, and riboflavin. It has long been known for its healing and calming qualities. Mint’s natural peppermint aroma and cooling sensation, combined with its antioxidant properties, make it a unique beauty ingredient. In skincare, mint is used to fight free-radical damage, as well as to soothe skin and reduce inflammation. Mint also contains tannins, which fight odor-causing bacteria and prevent the formation of cavities. fashion “rocs” Call it charisma. Call it charm. FASHION HOST Rocco Leo Gaglioti seems to have it. —KRISTI DUNN

Fashion’s newest “It Guy” is Rocco Leo Gaglioti, founder of the wildly popular FashionNewsLive.com. Almost instantly upon its inception, the site ranked in the top 10 of the world’s 150 million fashion news sites. And within a few minutes of casual conversation over lunch at Sur in Beverly Hills, it becomes clear why Gaglioti—who has only 15 fashion seasons under his D&G belt—is fast on his way to becoming a household name. Gaglioti hit the ground running in 2004 with a foray into fashion hosting—a red-carpet interview with Anna Nicole Smith. Not bad for a rookie. The six-foot-four former model made it look easy—you’d never suspect he came from such humble, challenging beginnings. Gaglioti’s mother, who was born deaf, taught him sign language before he even learned to speak, and now, he radiates a warm, soulful intelligence. Coupled with ambition and sensitivity, that savvy has earned him the trust of the megastars with whom he regularly moves and shakes. “I treat people how I want to be treated,” he explains while sipping on his passion fruit iced tea.

FASHION Profile

gENLUXshop

He finds inspiration in Madonna and Sylvester Stallone, individuals who came from nothing, beat the odds, and rose to international stardom. “The cream will always rise to the top. If you have drive and passion and believe one hundred percent in what you are doing, you will always rise to the top,” Gaglioti says with the conviction of someone familiar with hard work and sacrifice. But what advice does this style sage have to give about fashion? “Keep it simple,” he says. “Accessories are important and can make or break an outfit.” He doesn’t favor any one designer, but cites Monarchy and Chado Ralph Rucci among his top picks. He has one gripe with the fashion industry: “I wish there were more choices for men.” He admires Carson Kressley’s style, and views Audrey Hepburn as the style icon for women. And he thinks that Lady Gaga “looked like a red French fry at the MTV Awards.” So what does he see when he looks into the proverbial Swarovski crystal ball? Television, for one thing. He doesn’t rule out hosting an existing show, or starring in a show of his own. Move over, Ryan Seacrest.

Undeniably, fine lingerie has an element of fantasy about it, but Agent Provocateur’s new Soirée line—which creative director and founder Joe Corre calls the “ultimate luxury lingerie collection”—takes that notion to a whole new level. “It’s using the best fabrics and laces. It’s creating real fantasy outfits, real showgirl things— very ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ but really slick and really show-off,” he explains. Only available in limited quantities and select cities, Soirée ($190–$4900) marks Agent Provocateur’s biggest launch since the opening of its first boutique in 1994. Soirée includes stunning looks like the Gardinia range, $250–$1500, with layers of black and gold French leavers lace, and the Heloise corset, $4900, embellished with 2-inch metal spikes. “A raging monster, divine, inhuman— a lion in front, a serpent behind, a goat between—and breathing fire.” Such was Homer’s description of the fantastic creature known as the Chimaera. From astride his winged horse, Pegasus, Bellerophon killed the beast with a spear and won King Iobates’ daughter’s hand in marriage. Jimmy Choo. The name alone has the power to inspire a frenzied lust unique to women who really, really, really love their shoes. It all began in 1996, when Tamara Mellon was working in London as accessories editor at British Vogue. Spotting a demand in the marketplace for sexy but wearable footwear, she approached East End–based couture shoemaker Jimmy Choo, and the two teamed up to found a boutique on London’s Motcomb Street. Shortly thereafter, in 1998, New York saw its first Jimmy Choo boutique, then Los Angeles in 1999. Hollywood’s young and stylish set quickly fell for the brand’s strappy sandals and chic flats, and it wasn’t long before Mellon had added handbags, small leather goods, and eyewear to Jimmy Choo’s offerings. In two clicks of a stiletto heel, a comprehensive luxury lifestyle label was born. Today, the company counts more than 100 locations spread across 32 countries—and countless women all over the world dreaming about Jimmy Choos. —Shannon L. Bowen
