L

ights, Camera, Action! Welcome to our Hollywood issue.

One of my favorite movies of all time (please don’t judge me) is Gladiator, which came out in 2000 and was directed by Ridley Scott. I just love Russell Crowe’s character—he’s passionate, loyal and so in love with his family. I cry whenever I watch it. It never fails. I know, I know. My brother makes fun of me every time. Oh, by the way, a couple of issues after we launched the magazine, we had the privilege of shooting Scandinavian beauty Connie Nielsen, who played princess Lucilla. Actually, the Dolce & Gabbana SS14 collection reminds me of the movie. I know Sicily (homeland of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana) and Italy are not the same, but as we all know (or end up understanding), everything is connected—Roman Empire, ancient Greece, Egypt, East and West, North and South…everything. The whole world is connected and literally was at some point. Who remembers the love affair between Antony and Cleopatra? I know, another tragedy. Anyway, all this inspired the Roman theme for my editor’s picks in this issue. I found a new love: gold. In jewelry, accessories, clothing and particularly lace (I am officially obsessed with gold lace!) (p24) Other trends we highlight in this issue are safari and sea treasures. (p96) Happy Chinese New Year, everybody! The Year of the Horse should be a good one. Everybody says it will be better than the last. I believe it—not because it’s the general opinion, but because I’m an optimist. Enjoy this issue to the fullest. And as usual, let me know your deepest thoughts. SHANE’S WORLD

Shane Lynch vowed to her parents that before following her heart into acting, she’d finish college first. We caught up with the Wesleyan grad in Malibu—sporting spring looks from Roots. She told our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER about pursuing her dreams, about being a geek forever, and about how the greatest advice she’s ever been given came from…Mel Gibson. E

very year, one of the toughest red-carpet tickets in town is the Vanity Fair Oscar party— tough, that is, unless you’re Shane Lynch, and your dad is writer and producer Mitch Glazer, once Graydon Carter’s best man.

“One of my craziest memories of the Vanity Fair party,” Shane says, “was when I was about 17. I was hanging out with Graydon’s son Ash, and one of my favorite movies at the time was Braveheart. At one point I look over and my parents are talking to Mel Gibson. So we go over and start elbowing my dad to get introduced, which he did. Anyway, later in the night, Ash and I are at the bar, talking, and drinking our Martinellis, when all of a sudden this pair of arms comes and wraps around us. It’s Mel, and he says, ‘You two guys…are the coolest people here…you’re so young… just don’t f**k it up.’ And with that, he disappeared back into the party.” A product of Hollywood, Shane’s main source of inspiration and support comes from her mom, actress Kelly Lynch, who married Mitch in 1993. Soon thereafter, Mitch adopted Shane. “Mitch is the ultimate father figure and my best friend in the world.” Of her fondest childhood memory: “When I was about 13, my dad bought me this beautiful set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books and he said, ‘You’re ready to read these now.’ But I said, ‘Dad, could you please read them to me?’ So almost every night for about a year, after I finished my homework and was ready for bed, my mom would come in, curl up on this chair in my room, and fall asleep while my dad read the books to me.”

To their credit, Mitch and Kelly were adamant that Shane complete college before diving into acting—which she did, graduating from Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut. “I majored and became passionate about history, writing, reading, and nerdy things,” Shane admits. “I’m a geek forever. I nerd out on things like loving anime or Lord of the Rings, or whatever the geek obsession du jour is.” Since graduating, she’s acted in a few movies, a handful of television shows and, most recently, in Men, Women & Children, directed by Jason Reitman, due out this year. Shane’s passion for historical fiction would dovetail nicely into a writing career. “I like anything that has a distinct ‘world’ to it—when you get a full sense of where you are. If it’s historical, I like it when it immerses you in it. One of my favorite books is A World Lit Only by Fire. It’s all about medieval to Renaissance Europe, and instead of telling you timelines, it tells you the gory details—like cannibalism, or wearing your clothes until they fall off of you…or watching your parents having sex in the same room as you. Really getting into what life was like. My dream is to write something historical like that. The more practical dream is to write a short that my friends and I can do this summer.” Dreams, plus Mel’s words of wisdom, and life couldn’t be better. G

Our Cast: Alexander Dreymon recently joined the all-star cast of season three of American Horror Story for FX. The handsome, blue-eyed young actor is fluent in German, French and English. 22-year-old Willa Holland is best known for her role as Kaitlin Cooper on The O.C.. She also appeared on The CW series Gossip Girl, and Arrow, as Thea Queen. She’s also appeared in a few films including Straw Dogs with James Marsden, and Legion, opposite Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid. What do you consider luxury? Alexander: Spending time with my family. Willa: Life, as much of a cliché as that may be. Everything in this world is pretty rich and full if you can learn to appreciate it. When did you know you wanted to act? Alexander: I always knew. Willa: My mother claims I used to dance and sing in front if the TV as soon as I could walk and talk, saying “I want to be in the box! Put me in the box!” Were you familiar with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? Alexander: I’m a big Williams fan, and I think it’s a brilliant screen adaptation. I love the little details which aren’t in the stage play, like when he caresses her nightgown in the bathroom after rejecting her. And the relentless brood of no-neck monsters is just priceless. Willa: I regret to admit that I hadn’t seen it before, but loved it so much, I bought my own two copies—one for LA and one for Vancouver.

Your thoughts on Taylor and Newman’s performances? Alexander: They’re timeless. Her longing is heart-wrenching. She is so vulnerable, yet so strong in her dedication to her husband, and damn—that sensuality…what a turn-on! The visceral intensity in Newman’s eyes is magnetic. There are so many layers in his performance, and the weight he gives Brick despite his ‘angel face’ is inspiring. Willa: Both performances are legendary. Elizabeth is radiant as always, and has such a cosmic energy that shines on film… and Newman is so vulnerable. It’s amazing to watch the two of them—it’s the best homework I’ve ever had. Who’s a famous person you’d invite to a dinner party? Alexander: Will Ferrell Willa: Mickey Rourke would be a pretty entertaining guest…or Robert Downey Jr. Favorite movie? Alexander: Young Frankenstein Willa: The Pope of Greenwich Village Favorite Hollywood icon? Alexander: Daniel Day-Lewis Willa: I love Mickey Rourke and Eric Roberts. I think Eric is so under-appreciated. I could never choose one favorite, but I do love all the classics like Elizabeth, of course, Audrey, and Sophia Loren.

‘Driven’ is one of the words Katheryn Winnick, the beautiful star of the History Channel’s Vikings, uses to describe herself. But, as our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER finds, for this five-degree martial arts–wielding expert, that’s an understatement.

I

t’s 9:45 a.m. and Katheryn Winnick, who’s been up for about half an hour, is at home in her Venice loft. She jumps on a call with me, takes a sip of her morning coffee, and tells me she’s trying to figure out what to have for breakfast. She’s just arrived back in town, so her fridge is bare—save for that leftover steak from her dinner at Boa. The first thing I ask her for is the five words that best describe Katheryn Winnick.

“Five words? Okay, how about driven, caring, hardworking, fun, and, hmmm…adventurous.” By most accounts, Winnick, who portrays Lagertha, the badass sword, shield, and axe-wielding young warrior and mother on the History Channel’s very authentic and raw original series, Vikings, was made for the role. The show, penned by Emmywinning screenwriter Michael Hirst (Elizabeth, T he Tudors) tells the tale of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a Viking warrior on a mission to explore and conquer distant shores. It’s a story of warfare and pours out its share of ratingsgetting bloodshed, but it’s also a touching story of family and brotherhood. Winnick and the show are catching fire. In real life, Winnick, who is blonde and generally photographed in a sexier light, doesn’t look anything like her warrior role. Truth is, she thrives on physical challenges and Vikings certainly brings them on. “You’re either training on a horse or stunt coordinating, or battle-training with sword and shield—it’s a very intense show for that. Then there’s the challenge of shooting in the weird weather of the mountains in Ireland. It can change on a dime, from sunny – to raining – to hailing – to freezing cold and windy – and back to sunny, and all within an hour and a half. It’s crazy. It’s tough shooting those battle sequences in the rain.” Like Lagertha, Winnick comes from a strong, close-knit family, and, like Lagertha, she’s someone who can fend for herself. Since the age of 7, she’s been involved in martial arts

and holds a third-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a second-degree black belt in Goju-Ryu karate. “I’ve owned my own dojos and have been teaching women’s self-defense for many, many years,” Winnick says. “It’s a passion of mine to see women transform their inner strength—to see them walk more confidently and be able to protect themselves. It’s really empowering.” The 36-year-old Ukranian-Canadian Winnick was born Katerena Anna Vinitska. She grew up speaking Ukranian as her first language until she was 8. She keeps up with the current politics and recent upheaval in Ukraine and hopes to come face-to-face with the country’s imprisoned ex-president, Yulia Tymoshenko—one of her heroes. “It’s encouraging to see that she is enduring…her strength, how she’s inspiring the people—even when she’s still behind bars. She was wrongfully imprisoned, and right now Ukraine is going through a revolution. Hopefully she gets out, and hopefully Ukraine survives what’s happening.” Shrinking from fear is not on this girl’s radar. Besides her martial arts expertise, she’s also sky-dived a few times and wouldn’t mind trading places with an astronaut. “It sounds crazy, but I’ve been fascinated about space for a very long time. I know it’s the wave of the future and I’d love to be able to go up in space and see the world. I think that would be a magical moment.” Crazy as it sounds, somehow we believe her. G

Couture Week in Paris was both exciting and very practical this season—making it seriously appealing to me. There’s Valentino, who was inspired by the drama of opera, and CHANEL , who was inspired by the practicality of sport. CHANEL is ensuring you won’t hurt your knees or elbows this spring, with wonderful pads for them. Just imagine how good you’ll look skateboarding through the streets with those slightly flared waist-emphasizing skirts. Next up, Viktor & Rolf gave a new twist to their Harlequin look with ballet clothes that were totally adorable in pastel colors. It seems they’re turning their back on their previous collections, which were beautiful but austere. The stunning array of colors may Vlieger & Vandam classic small very well have me turning my back on black. I also loved the knife bag, $379, Gregory’s at Fred Segal Melrose, LA, 323collection of Giambattista Valli. 655-9500; vliegervandam.com When in Los Angeles, I’m dying to wear my black, wellfitted-to-the-floor, snake-down-the-back dress by Roberto Cavalli to the Elton John Oscar party. I usually hate wearing long dresses, but Cavalli manages to make everybody look the bomb. He continually proves to the world he cuts well at all times. With practicality at the top of the agenda in Paris, I did wonder if couture was dead, but judging by the front row sitting in gilt chairs, it’s being changed Giambattista Valli white silk overnight by the likes of Kim Kardashian and dress, $4790; the women from the Far East clearly enjoying Giambattista themselves. Change is always good, and now that Valli black silk it’s the Year of the Horse,, we can forget the blouse, $995; black silk skirt, snaky charms of last year. $3590; Saks On a personal note, I’m putting the final Fifth Avenue, touches to my film and it goes on sale. The Beverly Hills, film world and the fashion worlds are not 310-275-4211 so different—one is just faster than the other. Listen, I like to try everything to keep up to date. Up next? Why, thanks to CHANEL , learning to skateboard, of course!

GENLUX EDITOR AT LARGE

FASHION DROUGHT? —GEORGE BLODWELL The award season is in full swing with the big one, the Academy Awards, just around the corner. I wore my tuxedo coat by Roberto de Villacis to the Golden Globes HBO party and it was a big hit! The new spring men’s collections leave me a little underwhelmed. I don’t see much innovation this season. We all have our dry spells, but there’s a serious drought this year in particular. Better to just stick with the classics. As far as quality and workmanship, Hermès is one of the best. The beautiful grey suede coat is a masterpiece in understated elegance. I love the whole look. The black double-breasted suit cut a little shorter than previously is a great staple to have. Gucci has created a rather nice cardigan/jacket that for the right guy could cause ripples of

appreciation and attention, and although a classic, this one is forward, innovative and wearable. Just try it on and see for yourself—you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its power. On a final note, I’ve always loved my iPhone…until recently. I was sitting with a star from Cirque du Soleil after his mesmerizing performance at Glamorama, the Macys fashion show, when he started to show me pictures on his phone. He pulled out his Samsung Note, and that was it. Wow! The screen was so impressive, how could I continue looking at my measly screen after that? I’ve become a big fan of the Note, and I simply have to spread the news. Forget those tiny other screens and go big. Enjoy! Love, George. Boca do Lobo Pixel Cabinet, $28,620, bocadolobo.com Reminiscent of the 3D puzzle invented in the 70s, the Rubik’s Cube, this striking cabinet holds a bevy of wonderment. 1,088 triangles are skillfully formed together and polished with ten types of wood leaf. Voilà, storage becomes pure enchantment!

Hermès Sofa by Brabbu $7650, brabbu.com Rich, creamy velvet is given curvilinear lines and takes itself from 70s decadence into brand-new dimensions. Named after the god of travel and communication, the Hermès sofa’s dynamic shape harkens back to a bygone era, yet boldly claims its presence in the here and now.

Earth Armchair by Brabbu, $3520, brabbu.com Inspired by the movement of the Earth around its axis, this ethereal armchair brings out the best of 70s design and spins it into the future. Lushly appointed green velvet is enveloped by goldenhued hammered brass, turning this swivel chair into a throne.

Sequoia Center Table by Brabbu, $17,810, brabbu.com

Burled wood came to define the aesthetic of 70s interior design; it was a sign of the times. Burls, or knots, appear in wood due to stress, and the unusual grains formed are seen as markings of splendor. This table is a stunning display of tension and rare beauty. Gathered from the Sequoia, the largest and tallest tree in the world, the center piece is a wild stroke of Mother Nature’s genius. Wrapped in brass crafted to enhance the bark it surrounds, it brings newness to the old world.

Exploring Nars

François Nars looks to be in his early thirties, so it’s almost hard to believe that he was the makeup artist for the April 1984 issue of Vogue with Richard Avedon. His brilliant makeup career would lead to his eponymous global brand, NARS, in 1994, and later, to his success as a photographer. Somewhere in there NARS sold to Shiseido, and François bought Motu Tané, his own private French Polynesian island. We caught up with him on the eve of the release of his new book, Faery Lands: Tahiti. Here, looking dapper in a Saint Laurent suit and tie, and J.M. Weston shoes, he answers our Genlux two-word questionnaire. —Stephen Kamifuji

François Nars is the creative director for his eponymous brand. He photographs the ad campaigns and is involved in product-naming, like this blush provocatively titled Orgasm.

YOUR PASSION? My two passions are architecture and fashion photography. I’ve loved photography from when I was a kid, but I ended up being more focused on makeup. The important thing for me was doing great makeup for photo shoots with Richard Avedon and Steven Meisel and Irving Penn. Maybe subconsciously I was thinking, ‘one day I’ll take photos,’ but it was never an obsession. WHY PHOTOGRAPHY? In those first years, when I started creating the NARS line, we needed to take photographs for our campaign, but there was no money. We were very poor. So I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to take a camera and start shooting.’ I’d learned a lot by being in the best school: working with the best photographers in the world. I’d learned how to have dialogue with the models, and how to light. And I had a sense of fashion and a good connection with the models, because when you do makeup you make them look beautiful —that’s the goal. It came pretty naturally. I jumped into it. FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS? There’s such an incredible range of photographers that I like. May Ray, Brassaï, Guy Bourdin. And the ones I’ve worked with like Avedon, Penn, and Helmut Newton. WHAT CAMERA? A Deardorff 8x10 because that’s the camera that Richard Avedon used. I was fascinated by it. I loved the fact that you’re standing next to the camera to direct the subject. There’s such an incredible sense of drama and strength to shoot like that. I shot my first book, XRAY, with it. My new book, Faery Lands: Tahiti, I also shot with the 8x10, but now I shoot mostly digital. PRECIOUS MOMENT? Seeing my first Vogue cover. Oh my God, it was a dream! It was the biggest goal for me. It was 1985 and Richard Avedon shot Renée Simonsen for it. It took me only three months to get to Avedon’s studio. Not bad, right? It was Vogue editor Polly Mellen who brought me to meet Avedon. PLAN B? I would have loved to get into architecture or home décor. MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT? The first time I worked with Irving Penn. There were very few people who could work with him. It was so

92 GENLUX SPRING 2014

Tahiti: Faery Lands by François Nars, $100, narscosmetics.com

extremely restricted. It wasn’t that you wanted to work with Penn, it was more if you could work with him. It was a very small studio on Fifth Avenue. MOST BEAUTIFUL? The face that inspired me the most was Linda Evangelista—because she was so perfectly beautiful. Her attitude was so good; she loved being made up and photographed. She almost had a sexual relationship with the camera. It almost became overwhelming. It was fun working with her because she brought my makeup to life. FAVORITE MODEL? I love this young girl, Toni Garrn. She reminds me a lot of the 70s supermodels—the Swedish or Danish girls. I also love Daria Strokous. Those are my two favorites. CHANGING AESTHETIC? I never change. I’ve always been strongly attracted to the same face. Probably since I was eight years old, when I woke up to certain worlds like photography and fashion and aesthetics. Around that time I was attracted to the same type of women in the magazines—women of the 70s like Dayle Haddon and all the girls that Helmut Newton photographed. It’s the same for me today. I like strong character and beautiful faces, but a little bit odd. All the faces that Serge Lutens used for Guy Bourdin were also very dramatic—those were my two masters in makeup and photography. SUCCESS SECRET? I was quite lucky. I worked hard my whole life, but I was discovered pretty quickly. I really only struggled two or three months. I met Olivier Echaudemaison [now the creative director of Guerlain], and immediately started doing fashion shows with him. He introduced me to all of the editors. It went so fast. I just wanted to do what I loved, and that was makeup and being in the fashion world. NEXT SUBJECT? The ultimate actress that I’ve wanted to photograph is Cate Blanchett. Fortunately, she just said yes! I also just photographed Tilda Swinton. WHAT’S NEXT? A new book of celebrity portraits. See? I don’t stop.

Louis Vuitton l’ Extraordinaire bag, $20,600, louisvuitton.com

I JUST FAINTED!! I saw my first photo of the Louis Vuitton l’ Extraordinaire... and I am so beyond in love that I may have to faint again! It could be just about the most beautiful purse ever. This strictly limited-edition and numbered bag is embroidered with a sparkling array of crystals and feathers (which take six days to create by hand). The hand-pleated tassels, the Swarovski crystal chain handle, the calfskin trims, and emblematic LV padlock all make me swoon. After seeing this purse, I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same. Louis Vuitton, you have captured my heart and soul once again!

Replenix Eye Repair Cream I ran out for a couple of weeks. After my new supply arrived, I immediately had several eye compliments! When was the last time that happened? The Vitamin K, which is proven to reduce puffiness and is recognized by doctors as a treatment for bruising (dark circles), and the arnica, work in tandem to lighten and promote a more youthful appearance within FIVE minutes. Replenix is better than any primer or concealer to use as a base before makeup. Famed celebrity dermatologist Dr. Mark G. Rubin says, “The chemists at Topix (who make Replenix) have created the holy grail of skincare products: a perfect eye cream…and I’m ecstatic!” When Dr. R. is ecstatic, we are ecstatic! Thank you, Topix, for making my eyes shine enough to get compliments! Replenix® Eye Repair Cream, topixpharm.com Feather my Flat!

Obviously, you’re smelling a theme here: Feathers and Jewels—two of my favorite things. Mix them together, and I weaken at the knees. Rochas did exactly that with these whimsical little nuggets. Do I want it? Yes! Will I wear it? Yes! Do I have to have it? YES!! rochas.com

La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream, $300, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, 310-275-4211 When my skin specialist at Saks Fifth Avenue calls, I listen! Craig Newman let me in on a secret—and by the time this story goes to print, the cat will be out of the bag! La Prairie has released a new antiaging cream that literally melts years off our faces. The Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream is the newest, latest and greatest to hit the market in the war against aging. I literally ran to the Saks counter to slather the sample on my face—right over my makeup. What did I find? My skin looked better—instantly. The light-infused cream totally blurred my wrinkles and allowed my skin to have a more youthful glow. If it works this great after one application, six weeks from now I will be one happy girl!

A little over 25 years ago, Alicia Estrada founded Stop Staring!—the vintage-inspired dress line that’s now sold in over 50 countries and worn by celebs like Emmy Rossum, Britney Spears, Heather Graham, AnnaLynne McCord, and countless others. Here, she shares with our LISA WAYNE answers to the Genlux two-word questionnaire.

YOUR PASSION? It’s always been to make my own clothing. During college, I would make my clothes and design outfits to wear out to nightclubs. My friends, sisters, and I had so much fun wearing the clothing and getting lots of attention. I was always making clothes that were so far ahead of their time, yet retro-inspired.

YOUR BACKGROUND? I grew up in a family of ten children, so learning to sew was a necessity. I unofficially became the family seamstress, hemming and repairing all our clothes. I learned basic sewing, draping and pattern-making all on my own, often altering thrift-shop clothing to create fresh, new pieces. Eventually I took a few semesters in the fashion department at Long Beach City College, where I developed industry standard skills, and enhanced my sewing skills.

FAVORITE GETAWAY? My ranch in Tehachapi, CA. It’s surrounded by mountains, and there are wild horses, cattle and deer roaming the land. It’s incredibly peaceful, and really helps me to put life in perspective.

THREE BLESSINGS? God being in my life daily is my greatest blessing by far. My husband, James, who is also the CFO of Stop Staring!, has been a best friend and great business partner, and of course my baby Solomon, who just turned one. Solomon is teaching me to have joy in my everyday life.

Genlux sends fashion correspondent Sabrina Chapman, with friends in tow, to report on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2014 in Miami. She comes back with these show highlights and a tan, and tells us, “Listen, if these models don’t inspire you to get in shape for the trending swimwear, nothing will!”

When traveling to MercedesBenz Fashion Week Swim it’s advisable to do so in numbers for optimum enjoyment. Besides, let’s be honest, Gucci sunglasses look so much more fashionable in multiples, and one simply can’t dine or sip solo at The Bazaar by José Andrés. In between runway after runway, a major question always remains: What to do in the downtime? SLS Hotel offers an unparalleled luxe beach experience, or get in the groove to pulsating beats at Hyde South Beach. Then there’s always free-flowing Perrier-Jouët Champagne at the Star Lounge on the seventh floor of the Raleigh. For the super-fortunate, there are even private screenings like Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf ’s at Soho Beach House, hosted by designer Naeem Khan and Bergdorf Goodman SVP Linda Fargo. Giftbag goodies are always a well-received delight. Our faves were Zoya Pixiedust polish from the Luli Fama show, Booth honey almond dry oil mist, and Smashbox Limitless Waterproof Brow Definer.

GENLUXSHOP MIDTOWN MAKEOVER For those familiar with the Viceroy hotel aesthetic, just the thought of the brand planting something new at 120 West 57th Street was all we needed to jump a plane and check things out.

Modern Streamline: Like a classic Chris Craft boat, Roman and Williams have created an elegant and refined hotel

You can view it! The Viceroy offers stunning city vistas

T

he Viceroy hotel brand recently expanded its portfolio of luxury properties, opening the giant glass doors of its 240-room Manhattan hotel—set to challenge the status quo of the other hundred or so midtown hotels. This time out, the Viceroy New York chose Roman and Williams, the design firm whose celebrated projects include the Royalton Hotel, Ace, and the Standard Hotel. Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, the in-demand husband-and-wife team, took the 29-story black tower rising out of Central Park and created it all—the exterior, the interior, the lighting, even the furniture. The result is a handsome amalgam of rich, masculine colors and textures—some existing, like the cast-glass bricks, brass fluting at the base, and black-muntined windows that recall the neighborhood’s pre-war structures. Like an expertly restored vintage Chris Craft speedboat, the hotel features marine-inspired touches of brass, aluminum, leather, iroko wood and glass. There are even porthole windows that frame views of Central Park. The hotel’s streamlined double-height lobby offers a touch of 30s modern flavor and is anchored by the substantial use of polished paonazzo marble with its rivers of color. To ensure that guests are enveloped in their ‘experience,’ an exclusive custom fragrance created by 12.29, the olfactive branding experts, wafts through the hotel’s public spaces. Comfortable guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows provide hotel-branded smartphones with Viceroy Connect,

a custom app that allows guests to control every aspect of their stay—including in-room elements, outside communication and concierge services. The rooms offer their share of co-branding experiences like the Beats by Dr. Dre™ Beatbox Portable™ audio sound systems, Sferra linens, Neil George spa products, illy coffee machines, and custom-curated minibars featuring top-shelf offerings like Vosges Haut-Chocolat, Mash soft drinks and Hudson Whiskey. During happy hour, the Gerber Group’s ‘cartender’ offers complimentary samples of ‘off-the-menu’ cocktails from a vintage bar. For the biz traveler, the Viceroy offers a business center, a meeting room, and boardroom—all complete with A/V capabilities—as well as a world-class Technogym fitness center and indoor swimming pool. Inside the hotel, the Gerber Group has partnered with Chef Marc Murphy to open Kingside, a 104-seat restaurant featuring a menu that highlights an extensive raw and crudo bar, a variety of toasts, charcuterie and cheeses, salads and small plates, pastas, fish and meats. Complementing the variety of inventive dishes are classic cocktails like a custom barrelaged Manhattan made with Michter’s Rye, Carpano Antica vermouth, and Angostura Bitters; and the Aviation, made with Bombay Gin, Maraschino Liqueur, Crème De Violette and fresh lemon juice. The venue also serves fresh cold-pressed juices from Liquiteria. Next to Lincoln Center for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, this might be New York’s most fashionable new address. —CM

In-season room rates at Viceroy New York start from $559, based on double occupancy, with a special weekend rate of $459. For more information and to make a reservation, phone 212-830-8000 or visit viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/newyork

BRIDAL PROFILE

GENLUXSHOP

Wanda with her daughter Simone

Good Impression Exquisite letterpressed invites and name cards are the specialty of the house

Wanda Wen could spend hours schooling you on the precious art of fine paper and the letterpress printing process. That’s the craft where each single sheet of paper is hand-fed into an iron press, which ever so delicately indents the paper’s surface, revealing, predominately through light and shadow, the letters or design. Selecting the right paper with the adequate tensile strength is important; so is the amount of pressure laid on the press. It’s a time-consuming and expensive process that has given way to more pedestrian means of print communication…well, except for those, who, like Wen, treasure the art. For nearly 20 years, the Oregon-born Wen, who studied international business at USC, has owned Soolip—the company that’s gained worldwide attention by creating exquisite one-of-a-kind invitations—including those for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ much publicized nuptials. Soolip (Wen’s middle name, which means “one’s life destiny is to seek wisdom” in Chinese), newly located at the Pacific Design Center, has evolved over the years to include retailing of sumptuous papers,

Paper Girl Wanda Wen’s Soolip offers hundreds of custom papers for creative ideas or simply for wrapping gifts

handmade cards and stationery, writing accoutrements, and other items elegantly touched by hand and heart. Soolip continues to offer the owner’s passion: exquisite letter-pressed and hand-calligraphed invites, personal stationery and place cards. Wanda Wen’s Soolip luxury brand also heads up A Soolip Wedding, an annual modern bridal event that’s attracted the likes of Carolina Herrera, Tiffany & Co, Harry Winston, Kate Somerville, Godiva, and Range Rover. And there’s the soon-to-be-launched Soolip Wedding app—a design tool to enable the planning bride to create customized design and inspiration boards with the guidance of the Soolip touch. When not obsessing over fine paper, Wen writes for The Huffington Post, and recently authored T he Art of Gift Wrapping. The sought-after speaker has been featured in T he Ne w York Times, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Martha Ste wart Weddings, Town & Countr y, W, InStyle, Elle, and T he Los Angeles Times. She has also appeared on the Today Show, Style Network, E!, HGTV and the Fine Living Channel. For more infor mation, visit soolip.com

Sacred Wood is a creation built around the olfactory impression of an authentic Sandalwood from Mysore, and is inspired by the Indian legend of Savitri. Due to its popularity, the oil has become nearly extinct and is prohibited for use in perfumery. To reconstitute the scent, KILIAN recreated the essential oil by steaming milk accents combined with polished woods and hot spices. Thank goodness for advances in scent technology! Callae Brownstein started her career in fashion working for prestigious brands like

Ralph Lauren and Roberto Cavalli, among others. Her true passion, though, has always been jewelry—she believes that it travels through people’s lives and becomes part of their story. Right around the time she started her company CB Luxe, Callae was diagnosed with brain cancer. While most would have been devastated, she was not deterred. She fought for her life and ultimately won. A Colorado native, Callae has a fashion style that’s elegant and edgy. Her motto: “Expect the unexpected.” What shoes do you bring?

What projects are you working on?

Christian Louboutin flats with PVC panels and Gianvito Rossi Plexy combo pumps.

I’m constantly seeking out inspiration for my jewelry lines CBL and CB Luxe. I love that the creative process never rests—I live, breathe and dream jewelry, and it’s become a very important outlet for me. In addition to designing, I have been focusing on growing CBeyondCancer (501c3), a nonprofit organization I founded after surviving brain cancer three years ago. The juxtaposition of working with cancer patients and designing jewelry has given me a profound perspective on life and the beauty we all need to recognize in our daily lives. .

Genlux Out-of-Towner

With a flirty homage to an era gone by, luxury shoes and accessories designer Charlotte Dellal’s creations infuse her love of meticulous detail with the ease and sophistication of old Hollywood glamour. She launched her London-based shoe brand, Charlotte Olympia, in January of 2008, and soon developed a reputation for chic design, playful patterns and color, and iconic styles. ¶ From statement heels to stylish flats, boots, and accessories, the unique brand continues to grow, outfitting celebrities like Kiera Knightley, Blake Lively, and fashionable women alike. She has also collaborated with internationally acclaimed designers, including Temperley London and Clements Ribeiro. Dellal now releases four seasonal collections each year, in addition to her permanent ‘Encore’ line, featuring the brand's signature pieces and, of course, her gold spiderweb emblem—no small feat for a busy mom of three boys. While managing her brand and noteworthy presence in major high-end retailers here and abroad, she still finds time to grab a drink at her favorite LA hangout, The Polo Lounge. We caught up with her to see what else she enjoys most when visiting her Hollywood muse. —Courtney Fortune

WHERE DO YOU…

ON AND OFF THE PLANE:

Stay in LA? Chateau Marmont with friends, or the Beverly Hills Hotel with family Have drinks? The Polo Lounge for Old Hollywood glamour

What’s in your carry-on? Charlotte Olympia Cat Naps— the set includes something every girl needs for her beauty sleep: silk slippers, a matching eye mask and a pouch to fit it all in…along with my iPad for work and play.

FAVORITE LA PLACES:

Red-eye or morning flight? Red-eye. Generally I prefer to sleep on a flight and have the day ahead of me when I arrive.

Shops: The Way We Wore is great to hunt around for vintage finds. And my recently opened Charlotte Olympia store on Rodeo Drive. Restaurants: The Fountain Coffee Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel for breakfast always! Museums: The Hollywood Museum in the Max Factor Building. I love the Art Deco style of the building itself and the original Max Factor makeup rooms.

Beach: I generally travel to LA for work, so I haven't had time to explore the beaches…but I like Venice beach—it’s great to walk around and check out the little stores in the area. Neighborhood: I haven't been to LA enough times. I’m still enjoying discovering the neighborhoods. Time of year: Spring

What are your packing essentials for LA? Shoe trees and shoe bags to keep my shoes intact, my Charlotte Olympia 'Walk of Fame’ bag for my inner movie star, and my Charlotte Olympia for Beverly Hills Hotel ‘Martinique Leaf ’ print heels fit perfectly into my Beverly Hills surroundings. And a pair of great vintage sunglasses. How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? I like to unpack as soon as I arrive so that I am familiar with my surroundings. I also always bring my speakers and photos of my boys. How do you look refreshed after a long flight? A lot of water and moisturizer…but MAC Ruby Woo red lipstick is my pick-me-up. What do you wish LA had more of that you have in London? Black cabs. What do you wish London had that LA has? Year-round sunshine and the healthy lifestyle.

Charlotte will be at Nordstrom at The Grove from 6–8pm on March 25
