AP Health’s trio of Revivals Thrift Stores — in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Palm Desert, each of which donates every dollar of profit to the organization (to the tune of almost $2 million a year) — is a success story made possible only thanks to the generosity of its more than 275 dedicated volunteers. We recently spoke to two of them. Elliott Night, 65, is a retiree who has been donating her time since March 2023 and has just surpassed 1,000 hours. Her most recent job was running a statewide program for CASA of Contra Costa County, a nonprofit that matches youth in foster care with volunteer clinical therapists for weekly teletherapy. Caleb Calderon — 22, coming up on five years and 350 hours — works full-time at the Starbucks at Vista Chino and North Sunrise Way in Palm Springs while studying at College of the Desert in hopes of becoming an English teacher. The two had never met before and quickly found out they had much in common.

D

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO VOLUNTEER AT REVIVALS? Calderon: Well, to be honest, free college. COD required me to do two hours of volunteering to earn my keep. I did my two hours and decided, “You know, that was fun. I want to keep doing this.” There’s a great group of guys in the clothing department with me, and I feel like I’m helping my community a little bit and giving people a great deal when they shop at Revivals. I also like history, and when I work in the warehouse, I see all sorts of stuff you wouldn’t see in other places. It’s like a little museum for me. Night: I’ve known about DAP Health for many years. And I love to go to thrift stores. I was a big customer of Revivals, and I thought, “Wow, what a great place to volunteer.” I love fashion, so I like sorting clothes, but my area is actually men’s underwear, socks, and ties. I have a big tie collection, so it’s right up my alley. I love that the money we make goes to provide health care for people in the community who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. THERE ARE SO MANY PLACES TO VOLUNTEER IN THE VALLEY. WHY REVIVALS? Calderon: The Starbucks where I work is right across from [DAP Health Sunrise], so I get to see how they impact people every day. I like the fact that the money I help them earn goes to a good cause. That really makes me feel good.

Night: The impact the stores can have on funding DAP Health’s programs and services is great. Every month, they tell us how much we’ve helped raise. We hear the impact we’re having. WHAT STANDS OUT ABOUT YOUR VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE? Night: I also volunteer at [DAP Health Sunrise’s] Ms. Dee’s Boutique, which has clothing for people who have an immediate need — perhaps for a job interview or some other important occasion. We also have clothing for people who may just not have a shirt that day. They can come in and shop, and everything is free. Everyone who comes into the boutique is always super grateful. They can’t believe a place like this exists for them. You can see the relief on their face when they see the variety of things available to them. Calderon: I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping and making somebody’s day. It’s a good feeling knowing you’re doing something that’s benefiting a lot of people you might not ever meet. You’re helping. That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.

WHY WOULD YOU TELL PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER AT REVIVALS? Night: The staff and volunteers at all the stores are all so welcoming and friendly. It’s like a family. I would say just come in and give it a try. The work is fun and easy. You don’t have to work in the warehouse. You can be a cashier and interact with people more. And there are many other opportunities to volunteer with DAP Health. You can do data entry or meet and greets at events. I’ve volunteered at [fundraising gala] The Chase and Dining Out For Life. Calderon: I know for people my age, they eat up a lot of time on social media and electronics. I’d say put your phone down for a little while and go make some new friends and help somebody in the process. There are better ways to spend your time than scrolling on your cell phone. If you’re looking to meet nice, friendly people like Calderon and Night while doing good for your community, please think about volunteering for a few hours a week at Revivals. THE COMPLEXITY OF

JASMINE MASTERS BY KEVIN PERRY he world has a way of labeling and limiting us. You’re too young. You’re too old. You’re too gay. Bosses give us boundaries, the government debates our civil rights, and society tells us who to date and how to love. But ya know what’s really sexy? Complexity. Think about it. When was the last time you said to yourself, ‘I’m really attracted to that simple bitch over there’? It just doesn’t happen. We crave depth, diversity, and dazzling dudes/divas aplenty. And no one is more marvelously multifaceted than Jasmine Masters. Even a seemingly simple question about preferred pronouns elicits a warm chuckle accompanied by a proud proclamation: “I’m not ashamed to say I’m a drag queen and I’m a man.” For the purpose of this article, we agree that it’s easiest to use she/her pro-

T

nouns since fans are familiar with Jasmine on an epic level. In fact, her official Giphy page has earned over 3.6 billion (that’s ‘billion’ with a B, baby) views thus far. But no matter how massive her popularity may be, it never tarnishes Ms. Masters’ remarkable authenticity. “I’m not acting to be a certain way. It’s just me, 100%. I’m the same way in drag and out of drag. But just to know that, in today’s time, where social media is so popular and I’m a big part of it, that I can make people laugh and they can use my gifs to make somebody laugh and they can understand the good of it. It really makes me feel great… To know that I’m getting seen around the world in a positive light really makes me feel good.” Camaraderie is her calling. In addition to being our meme queen of the decade, Jasmine channels Patti LaBelle in a way that is simply heavenly. “It has to be something connected through God,” narrates Masters. “I do feel like I am giv-

ing someone a blessing when I perform, especially when I perform something by her [LaBelle]. When I hear her and I see her, I feel so-- I feel seen. I feel wanted. I feel loved. I feel protected. I feel like I’m okay and I’m supposed to be here. It’s a good, positive energy that I get… People say you get chills and your hair stands up on the back of your neck. The first time I ever felt that type of feeling was from seeing her as a child. I was like, ‘Oh my god. I want to just go somewhere in the corner and just cry because of the feeling that she made me feel,’ and it has been like that ever since. When I am performing her songs, I want people to get that same feeling. It’s coming from my heart.” LaBelle not only inspires Jasmine professionally and artistically, but the two powerhouses also share the same att-ti-tude (attitude)! We were fortunate enough to experience a Jasmine Masters event recently and 99% of us were basking in the bounty of her talent. GEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

other people.” Punctuating her point passionately, Jasmine continues, “I don’t like people to feel like they’re not wanted or respected.” If you’re hungry for inclusivity, be sure to catch the magnificent Ms. Masters at one of her upcoming appearances. “I do have a brunch every Sunday at Boozehounds. I’m now the show host and show coordinator of the brunch there. And I have a first and third Saturday Illusions show at the Social Lounge Cafe and Bar in Palm Springs. I love that place. Oh, the food is so good. And the coffee is everything to me!” But Jasmine’s joy can’t be contained to Palm Springs; her music career puts the FUN in FUNKALICIOUS! “I have a new

single that is coming out: It’s Showtime! (Tip Her). And that’s on Spotify, and all them networks you could buy music.” As generous as she is jubilant, Jasmine shines a spotlight on her fellow artists deserving of our attention (and gay dollars). “Make sure you continue to support the entertainers in our business, in our community: the DJs, the strippers, the go-go dancers, the drag queens, the drag kings, non-binary, the mustaches, the bears. We just need to all keep supporting each other so we can have something that we can continue to attend for our safety and for our fun.” Togetherness rules! And Queen Masters serves solidarity effortlessly and enthusiastically. “My take on community

But there was one sourpuss who attempted to yuck the vibe. Instead of letting negativity fester in the corner of the club, Jasmine called out the curmudgeon subtly yet spectacularly. She announced that the *rest* of us were having an amazing time, so if a certain someone was out to pout, they could do it in their own damn house. It worked. Our safe space was fortified and fabulosity flowed anew, courtesy of Ms. Masters. “I just feel like no matter who you are, what size you are, what color or race you are, if you have one eye or 20 of them, you’re supposed to be treated like a human. At the end of the day, we are human. And we don’t need to bring down

is: I see it as a family where we all can get along. We all can accept each other. I just don’t like people to feel alone. Community is another way of me saying my family, because if we’re all together, if I see that you need help, I’m going to help you. And I want to be able to help you without any judgment. I just wanna help you because you’re human, you know?” Doubling down on her commitment to kindness, Jasmine declares, “I’m here to help, and that’s what we need in our human race, just period. In our community, we really need it because we already get pushed to the side or we get treated badly and we get talked about, but if we stick together, then every damn one of us can really feel like we belong and we

do have somebody who loves us, because we weren’t getting it from our bloodline family, but our community family is there for us to love us and support us and cheer us on.” When she’s not wowing crowds in person or racking up viral views online, Masters spreads her signature smiles one ring at a time. “A lot of people call me throughout the day just to talk to me on the phone so I can make them laugh if they’re having a bad day or they’re not in a good mood. They always call me to make them laugh, because they know I’ll say anything crazy or funny. But I like to give people joy because I say what I say! I always try to be funny, and I always have a joke ready. I think that’s my superpow-

“I’M HERE TO HELP, AND THAT’S WHAT WE NEED IN OUR HUMAN RACE, JUST PERIOD.” er, is to make folks happy.” So, move over, Marvel - Jasmine Masters is the hero we need right now. Her versatility vanquishes haters, her comedy flips frowns upside down, and her wholehearted humanity might just save the world. Thanks in advance! GEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

THE VOICE AND THE VISION

HANNAH

ON CRAFTING POP MAGIC WITH DIANE WARREN

BY MICHAEL WESTMAN

hen you possess a rare five-octave countertenor range, your vocal instrument is naturally built for drama. But for London-born, Los Angeles-based artist Jamie Hannah, the true challenge wasn’t hitting the high notes—it was finding the emotional courage to bring his full, unfiltered self to the microphone. That moment of alignment arrives on August 14 with the release of “Where Is Your Heart?”, a soaring piano ballad written by 17-time Oscar nominee and songwriting royalty Diane Warren. Serving as the lead single for Hannah’s forthcoming EP, the track represents a monumental leap for the independent

W

artist, bridging his classical roots with modern pop vulnerability. Few indie musicians land a track from a legend responsible for some of the biggest hits in modern music history. But after hearing Hannah’s unique vocal ability, Warren entrusted him with one of her newest compositions. For Hannah, the recording process at Warren’s studio required deep internal preparation. Rather than treating the song as a standard vocal exercise, he spent hours meditating before stepping up to the microphone, searching for the exact point where the lyrics intersected with his own life. “When I’m given a song, I have to find the place where my life meets the

lyrics,” Hannah explains. As the vocal track came together, the song’s central question, “Where is the you I used to know?” struck a deeply personal chord. It forced him to confront his private journey with sobriety and the personal light he felt he had lost along the way. “I was singing to a version of myself I hadn’t seen for a number of years,” he recalls. “I realized the heart I thought I’d lost was still there.” Hannah’s path to this point was forged through years of rigorous training at the Royal College of Music and over a decade with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. Growing up in a musical household, he spent his childhood GEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

foundations. That duality proved to be his greatest asset. After relocating to California following lockdown, Hannah began sharing his unique classical takes on pop hits across social media. His reimagining of Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” generated over a million views overnight, launching an online presence that eventually led to his viral Italian Aria series—a project that has now surpassed 10 million views.

While social media success expanded his global audience, Hannah’s focus remained steadfast on writing and releasing original music. Moving to Los Angeles allowed him to embrace both his artistic independence and his identity as a queer performer without compromise. Early in his career, Hannah fought against using his higher register in commercial pop out of fear of how he would be perceived.

steeped in classical masters like Handel and Monteverdi. Yet, as a young queer artist, his heart belonged equally to contemporary pop. “I was just kind of doing them both in tandem,” Hannah says of his early days balancing classical studies by day with pop covers by night. He drew inspiration from icons like Whitney Houston and Frank Sinatra, recognizing that their timeless appeal was built on solid vocal

“This is who I am, and I’m going to show up as who I am,” Hannah says. “Every gay boy has to do that at some point in their life.” That commitment to living authentically is reflected in his decision to speak openly about his sobriety, a choice that has given him the stamina and clarity needed to navigate the music industry on his own terms. Performing at his highest potential requires strict discipline, espe-

cially when singing for hours every day in the studio. With “Where Is Your Heart?” leading the way, Hannah is currently finishing a seven-track EP focused on resilience, strength, and self-acceptance. Operating as an independent artist without major label backing, his collaboration with Warren stands as proof that taking risks pays off. “Sometimes you just shoot your shot,”

Hannah reflects. “You’ve got to be audacious and reach out.” Backed by one of the industry’s most celebrated songwriters and armed with a renewed sense of purpose, Jamie Hannah is ready to share his original story with the world, one note at a time. “Where Is Your Heart?” arrives on all streaming platforms August 14. NEIL COHEN BREAKS DOWN THE FIT, FLAIR, AND FASHION FOR THE MODERN GAY MAN

ace it: you’re fabulous. It’s true! Stop being modest. We’ll wait. Modesty break over! Though you raise eyebrows and drop jaws wherever you strut, even *you* could use a trendy tune-up every now and again. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce a new column featuring our resident fashionista, Neil Cohen. This month, we’re talking about footwear, philanthropy, and fierce takes. Work the runway with us…

F

MEET YOUR (TASTE)MAKER “There’s a lot going on in fashion,” declares Cohen. “I mean, there really is. There’s so much, even my head is spinning.” So, where should we begin? At the stylish start. “I grew up in New York and believe it or not, my entire family was in the Garment Center. My dad was in sales. My aunts and uncles were pattern makers. Really, really respected pattern makers. Some of the finest at the time,” Cohen recounts. “I have one brother who did not take to it, but I’m the gay brother. I took to it and I loved it.” Or in the words of an(other) icon: “What’s Judy Garland’s line? ‘I was born in a trunk in the theater’.” And from that moment on, Cohen has been a real showstopper. “I

worked on 7th Avenue in Manhattan for over 30 years… I worked at Barney’s. I worked for Ralph Lauren, and then I was in wholesale, so I’ve been in every category of the industry. And for the last 15 years, I’ve been styling.” Harnessing next-level nostalgia, Cohen continues, “My dad was very elegant. He wore a Burberry trench. He wore beautiful cordovan loafers. So, I was always aware of a sense of style. And my dad was very classic. So, I use the word style versus trends, which I think there’s a big difference.” But when the trends of the time align with your own personal sense of style, you’re in a shimmering Shangri-La. “I used to go to Studio 54 where you’d be dancing next to someone in a Speedo, another in a tuxedo, and another in leather jeans with a ripped tank top… it was the freedom of that decade, the beloved late 70s, early 80s.” That sense of luxe liberation has guided Cohen all the way from his brilliant career in the Big Apple to his next big thing. Read on… GUYS AND DOGS (AND GALAS!) “I was hired this year to be the fashion director for Men of the Desert, which is the Animal Samaritan annual benefit,” narrates Cohen. “This is the 17th year, and it’s a wonderful benefit for our four-legged loved

ones. Animal Samaritans is an amazing organization, and they provide everything from neutering and surgeries and adoption so that these dogs can hopefully find a home.” Fur sure! The Men of the Desert gala hits the catwalk - er, DOGwalk on December 6th, and the theme is groovy with a capital GRR. “The disco theme is just the freedom to sort of wear whatever we want. And there’s so many options today.” Whether you prefer PAWda or BARKlenciaga, there will be plenty to pant about. “We use community members; all the models live in the area,” announces Cohen. “All the models walk with a dog on the runway.” Woof to the max! While the delightful details of the event are still taking shape, one thing is certain: Cohen will unleash the unbelievable. “I’m gonna try my best to incorporate every trend that we see in the market and apply it to our life in the Coachella Valley.” And on the topic of trends, our convo pivots to the matter of shoes. So, lace up, listen up, and buckle up - there’s fashion afoot! STEP OUT IN STYLE From head to toe, Neil is in the know. Mr. Cohen shares some of his invaluable insights to keep your tootsies top-shelf. “There’s been a really big curve in footGEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

over. Everything now is a low profile. And I think it’s a much, much cooler, timeless look. So bye bye to the fugly, chunky sneaker and hello to this new world.” What we love about Cohen’s vision is how he’s looking out for us. The last thing he wants is for his followers to wake up with buyer’s remorse and butt-ugly shoes. “There’s a difference between a guy who has a great sense of style versus someone who’s not that sure and jumps on every trend. They might have bought a big, funky, fugly, big chunky sneaker. And I’m sure they look at them now and think, like, what was I thinking?” SPORTY SIDEBAR “If you’re going to the gym or you’re a runner,” analyzes Cohen, “you should go to a running store where they measure your foot and get a shoe that’s good for you.” He differentiates between comfort and couture. “You should do some homework with your gym shoes and get the right pair. It’s sort of like a little sidebar... I don’t put it in the fashion category.” wear in the last year, which I personally love,” exclaims Cohen. “The return of the loafer is huge again. I grew up loving classic brands like Alden, and my dad wore Alden shoes… But the loafers that are really trending right now, they’re actually calling them rumpled loafers because it’s a softer, more flexible slipper-like loafer. Most of them are suede.” From old school to new designs, Cohen is a veritable loafer lover. “There is a new brand that I just found, and as a stylist, I like to find new brands. It’s called Deming. They do this beautiful ‘recovery’ loafer. They worked on the design with a podiatrist and I will tell you, they gifted me a pair. It is honestly the most comfortable shoe that I’ve ever owned in my life. They’re only online. It’s a small company. They’re suede. It sort of looks like a loafer meets an espadrille - it’s all one piece. There’s no heel. It’s like a wedge bottom.” But that’s just the toe-tip of the iceberg. Cohen strolls effortlessly to the next step in our footwear journey. “Loafers are the new option for guys that haven’t taken off sneakers in years. But there’s still an enormous, enormous sneaker trend happening and more new sneakers every day. I would say that every guy should own a beautiful white leather sneaker. Really, really clean, like what we call a minimal sneaker. And the type of sneaker that you can wear with a jean, you can wear with a suit. There’s really nothing you can’t wear it with. Then there’s a huge return to vintage canvas sneakers like Vans and Sperry, which

30

GEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

sometimes they call a boat shoe... a classic, sort of what JFK wore, just a timeless canvas sneaker.” A BRIEF WORD ABOUT BUDGETS Neil Cohen looks like a million bucks, but he’s also got an eye for affordability. “Sneakers and loafers today, especially if you’re looking at designer things, you’re looking at shoes and sneakers that are $600 to $1,000. So the cost of everything has become crazy. What I love about Vans and Sperry, they’re all about $60 to $100. So, I think for most men that’s attainable.” Practicality and passion go hand in hand (foot in foot?) as Cohen speaks sneaks. “There’s also a sneaker that I personally love that I just bought two pairs of. It’s by Nike and it’s called the Waffle Racer. And this is another trend. It sort of has a retro soccer feel. And I think coming off the World Cup, there’s a big trend in soccer inspired sneakers. So, sneakers are such an enormous category. The truth is we could talk about sneakers for, I’m not kidding, for like, hours.” And we’ll gladly, gloriously listen! “A few years ago, they actually called them fugly. The look was these big fugly Balenciagas, which I absolutely hated. And thank God, at this point in my life, I know my style and I don’t jump on every trend. I hated those sneakers. They were ridiculously expensive and they were clunky and chunky and really, really unattractive. And that’s completely

A STYLE FOR ALL SEASONS Summer is swell, but your feet need love throughout the calendar, so Cohen has advice for beyond August. “It’s the year of the flip flop. Not the greatest thing for your feet, but the flip flop was on every runway at every price point. Personally, I think the best flip flop made is by Old Navy. They’re $5… Sandals are a must have wherever you live. And the famous Arizona style from Birkenstock is still as popular as ever. I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks for over 30 years. They’re still on every runway.” Cool - literally! “Obviously we get a little bit of winter, which I love in the desert. The best thing to own is some sort of a classic Chelsea boot: an ankle high boot with elastic sides that you just pull on. Every good brand makes them and they’ve also been around forever. It’s just a really chic boot to wear with jeans, but they look great with a suit. That covers you from spring to fall to winter. It takes you through every season, certainly in warm weather climates.” WRAPPING UP Let’s leave fugly in the rear view and focus on freedom - freedom to flex your footwear of choice, freedom to live your disco dog truth, and freedom to rock your individuality. Neil Cohen is here to help, and he’s bringing his Studio 54 aesthetic to the Men of the Desert gala. For more info, contact events@ animalsamaritans.org or call 760-332-5027. See you in style!

ver the years, many drag entertainers have put out music, and when they do, I always have a listen. Some are good, but a lot fall flat with me. Either the beat doesn’t have a snappy tune, the lyrics don’t jive, or singing just isn’t where they shine the most. I applaud them all for taking the risk and entering the music field. I don’t know about you, but I love a good beat that I can dance to. My girl Fabeyonce McMichaels, who has previously released a line of lashes and makeup pallets to die for, has just released the track of the summer. And HONEY, I want everyone to GET INTO IT! So thrilled I was able to sit down with her for a minute and find out all the T on this newest adventure:

Had making music always been part of your long-term goals, or did this happen unexpectedly? It honestly happened unexpectedly It all started when someone pointed out that the things that come out of my mouth are pretty wild and entertaining. That made me realize I could turn my personality and creativity into something bigger, and the music just became part of that journey. Do you remember the moment you realized you wanted to record your own songs instead of just performing other artists’ music? I don’t think there was one specific moment. I have been inspired by so many incredible artists over the years that eventually I came to the conclusion, “Maybe I should just try writing my own music.” I wanted to tell my own story instead of only performing someone else’s, and that’s what pushed me to start creating my own songs. What was your biggest fear about releasing original music? I don’t know if I’d call it my biggest fear, but I definitely wondered, “What if nobody likes what I have to say?” Then I had a conversation with myself and thought, “Tough Titties.” At the end of the day, I’m going to say what I have to say. The right people will connect with it, and that’s all that matters. What gave you the confidence to move forward despite any doubts? I think it comes naturally. I’ve always believed in trusting myself and having confidence in who I am. At the end of the day, I truly believe that if I set my heart on something and I’m willing to put in the work, I can make it happen.

What surprised you most about the recording process? What surprised me the most was realizing just how much work actually goes into recording a song. It’s so much more than just singing into a microphone. I learned how to use my voice in different ways, experiment with different vocal styles, and really push myself creatively. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the recording process and everything that goes into making a great track.

Where did the inspiration for your song come from, and are your lyrics based on your own experiences, or are they more storytelling? The inspiration for my song came from my alter ego, Fabeyonce. She brings out a bolder, wilder, and completely unfiltered side of me. The lyrics aren’t necessarily based on one specific experience—they’re more about channeling her energy, attitude, and confidence into a story that people can have fun with and connect with.

Why do you think it’s important for drag artists to continue expanding into music, television, and other creative spaces? I think it’s important for drag artists—and really any artist—to keep evolving and not limit themselves to just one lane. We have so much creativity to offer, and there is no reason we can’t expand into music, television, business, or any other creative space. I’m a very entrepreneurial person, so if there’s something I want to do, I go for it. I believe in taking chances, making it work, and showing that drag artists can succeed in any industry we choose.

How involved were you in writing and producing the music? I was involved every step of the way. From the writing to the creative direction, I wanted to make sure the music reflected my vision. I also had one of my really good friends, DF, by my side throughout the process. They helped spark my imagination, bounce around ideas, and bring the creative energy that helped shape the final product.

Is this a one-time project, or have you caught the music bug? This is definitely not a one-time project. I’ve already written quite a few songs, and I truly believe each one has the potential to be a hit. Right now, though, I want to give these songs the opportunity to shine and connect with people. Once they’ve had their moment, I’m excited to get back into the studio and keep creating more music.

When people hear this music, what do you hope they learn about the person behind the lashes? My hope is that people truly understand who Fabeyonce is. I think by now they’ve gotten the message—they know the personality, the confidence, and the energy I bring. Now it’s time for everyone to stop overthinking it, turn the music up, and simply enjoy the ride. What is your ultimate “getting ready” anthem? My honest answer? Whenever I’m getting ready, I’m usually listening to something Latin. I love staying connected to my roots, and that music always inspires me. It brings out my energy, my confidence, and reminds me where I come from while I’m getting ready to take on the world. What accomplishment from this project makes you the proudest? This project represents more than just the music... I’ve had some difficult experiences throughout my drag journey that had nothing to do with performing, but they taught me a lot about myself. What makes me proud is knowing that when I set my heart on something, I go after it and make it happen. I’ve learned that no one can stand in the way of my vision, my passion, or what I’m determined to achieve. So, what are you waiting for? Download “Queen of Coachella” on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube. I’ll see you on the dance floor! Joyfully, Ethyl GEDMAG.COM AUGUST 2026

ON STAGE F**KING STRANGERS: Los Angeles – After suggesting many plays and musicals in cavernous theatres, today’s tip is for a very small venue in Atwater Village, a small art enclave in an obscure part of Los Angeles. I have enjoyed my visits to this little theatre because it is the opposite of the big theatres I normally preview in this column. The “Village” includes two theatres and a bar, which also serves small plates. Echo Theatre Company’s offering this month, F**cking Strangers, is the world premier of a deliciously off-kilter comedy by Erik Patterson. It is described as “a twisted, hilarious and unexpectedly moving story about loneliness, desire, family secrets and the strange ways people try to save one another.” The plot is that Ru hasn’t left his bedroom in six years. Mick can’t stop paying for affection. Julianne mourns the life she never pursued. Dylan sells his companionship to anyone who can afford him. As reality and online obsessions blur into genuine intimacy, long-buried truths begin to surface. What starts as role-playing and fantasy spirals into a wildly unpredictable collision of sex, secrecy, family and redemption – with consequences that are both shocking and wickedly funny. Many of the actors at Echo Theatre work extensively in film and television. They use small companies like this to hone their craft and sometimes to be seen by casting directors. F**cking Strangers plays Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. I have never seen a theatre company perform on Monday nights, but that’s when all the other theatres in town are dark so they can welcome other theatre professionals as well as all others. www.EchoTheaterCompany.com

ELLEN GREENE/LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS: Various – Here’s an unusual event that just popped up on my desk. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the filmed musical Little Shop of Horrors, the movie is being screened in select theatres, hosted by Ellen Green who was the original Audrey on stage and also in the movie. The musical very popular with community and school theatres and it seems like I see it at least once every year. Mind you, I’m not complaining. I love the music, written by Disney favorite Alan Menken, and the characters in the script by Howard Ashman. In case you have somehow never seen it, the plot involves a clumsy nerd named Seymore (Rick Morans) who works in a Skid Row flower shop owned by Mr. Mushnik (Vincent gardenia). The store’s other employee is Audrey (Ellen Greene), a girl with such incredibly low self-esteem that she’s dating a sadistic dentist (Steve Martin). Seymore finds a unique plant which he names Audrey II because of his secret crush on his co-employee. The plant turns out to be an alien being which thrives on human blood. The plant is voiced by Levi Stubbs. The film also features special appearances by Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest, and Bill Murry. Ms. Greene will start the evening with stories about the off-Broadway production and transferring it into a movie. She will also sing “Somewhere That’s Green,” the best-known song from the musical. The performance and screening can be seen at The Riverside Fox 8/14; San Diego Balboa 8/15; San Francisco Curran 8/16, The Anaheim Grove 10/18; and The Palm Springs Plaza 1/27/27.

GREEK THEATRE: Los Angeles – Many theatres across the country close down for the summer months. Luckily Southern California has a wealth of outdoor venues. I’ve previously written about the Hollywood Bowl, a behemoth that seats 18,000 people. In second place, with 5,900 seats, is The Greek Theatre, located in Los Angeles’s Griffith Park It was built in the early 1930’s and its name comes from its classic Greek architecture used in the main stage and seating areas. The Greeks designed amphitheaters where the angle of the stage and the seating would enable actors to be heard by audiences exceeding 1,000, obviously performing without microphones. The original 1930 design of The Greek featured 4,000 seats. In ensuing years, the audience has been expanded on both sides and the back to now accommodate 5,900. In the 50’s through the 70’s, The Greek welcomed many touring opera and ballet performances, so the staging equipment was greatly upgraded. All of those shows have now moved to the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion of the Los Angeles Music Center, so since the early 70’s, it has been used primarily for rock and pop concerts including Ringo Starr, the Gogo’s, and Chicago. Neil Diamond recorded the concert album “Hot August Night” at the Greek, and four years later followed with “Love at the Greek.” It was also naturally featured in the 1910 film, Get Him to the Greek. This month’s calendar includes Death Cab for Cutie, Sarah McLachlin, Gypsy Kings, O.A.R., The Guess Who, Train, Tori Amos, and The Determination Symphony – in short, names that most of us recognize but which can’t quite fill the voluminous Hollywood Bowl. There are premium seats and boxes available in the first 15 rows. Those seats also include access to an upgraded parking lot with individual spaces. Otherwise, it’s stacked parking and your departure time depends on people who are parking in front of you. www.lagreektheatre.com THIS MONTH’S CALENDAR INCLUDES DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, SARAH MCLACHLIN, GYPSY KINGS, O.A.R., THE GUESS WHO, TRAIN, TORI AMOS, AND THE DETERMINATION SYMPHONY – IN SHORT, NAMES THAT MOST OF US RECOGNIZE BUT WHICH CAN’T QUITE FILL THE VOLUMINOUS HOLLYWOOD BOWL.

JOHN ANSON FORD AMPHITHEATRE: Los Angeles And while we’re on the subject of lesser-known outdoor theatres, the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre is a 1,200 seat venue, right across the 101 Freeway from the Hollywood Bowl. It was built in 1920 and was known as The Pilgrimage Theatre. Its primary use was a Pilgrimage play featuring popular stars of the period. They continued to produce the Pilgrimage play until 1964 when they were forced to close it because of complaints that it was a religious play in a county-owned theatre. The Ford Theatre presents an eclectic season of music, dance, theatre, film and family events. In addition to its multidisciplinary partnership program, Ford’s summer season includes a 10-part series showcasing artists from around the world and a six-part series for families. Their events this month include Judy Collins: Sweet Judy Blue Eyes’ Farewell Tour; The Improvised Shakespeare Company; Summertime! With the Bob Baker Marionettes; Ani de Franco with special guest Valerie June; Hilado Tropical; Tercera Raiz; and Flypoet Summer Classic. In short, they are very niche performers with a strong leaning towards Mexican and other ethnic music and dance. You may not find anything to your liking, but it’s worth scrolling through their calendar. I, for one, would love to see Judy Collins one last time. www.TheFord.com

MOVIES ARE SO GAY!

IF YOU CAN’T STAND THE HEAT, THEN AVOID THESE HAWT AUGUST PREMIERES! BY KEVIN PERRY

s gays make the best of any situation. We flip houses, we improve workplaces - hell, we even endured seven seasons of Riverdale. We. Are. Strong. So, when studios crap out their most abysmal films, queer audiences must find gems among the junk. August is traditionally the dumping ground for the year’s worst movies… and that tradition continues in 2026. But every cinematic turd has some redeeming qualities, whether it’s a hunky actor, a lesbian life lesson, or just the soothing air conditioning of the theater where you’re beating the heat and sneaking a smooch from your screening partner. So, chug a jumbo soft drink, chow down some nourishing popcorn, and chill with our rundown of ramshackle late-summer releases!

AUGUST 7TH

It’s clear that society is in peril when even the sappiest of rom-coms are served with a side of fascism. Case in point: One Night Only, the seemingly saccharine story of two impossibly beautiful breeders who just can’t meet their special someones. They primp, they pose, they pucker their perfect lips and voila! It looks like they might *finally* find love. But wait - the law says you can only have premarital sex one night of the year, so these two lustbirds need to seal the deal before midnight. Cuddly meets creepy! They even spew dialogue that sounds like it was ripped from trump’s birthday poem to epstein (neither of whom deserve capitalized names). The male lead tells his handmaid - oops, girlfriend - that the best part of intimacy is “two people lying there sharing a secret.“ Perverted, party of two! What better way to cleanse the palate than with one of our favorite Nazi slayers? Eli Roth delivers Ice Cream Man, a silly slasher in which demented kids play tetherball with severed heads, dissect their teachers as graphically as possible, and scoop out their victims’ brain goo like it’s rocky road. Aaaand that’s why we’re childless. This flick is one sick lick! Get the raunch rolling with the eternally irreverent Super Troopers 3. Boner jokes abound in a threequel that’s equal parts slapstick and cop dicks. In the latest installment of the jocular saga, Farva woos Thorny’s sister, thus triggering an avalanche of inappropriate cultural humor. Meanwhile, the older members of the squad feel like they’re being out-cool’d by the cocky young newcomers. Ageism, racism, and every other ism (even that naughty one you’re thinking about rn) are all in the mix as our offbeat officers go off. You have the right to remain hilariously stupid! On the other end of the storytelling spectrum, Late Fame depicts a mature poet who reemerges onto the boho scene and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - sorry, the trailer is so boring that I fell asleep on my keyboard (landing precisely on the Z button, conveniently enough). Moving on!

AUGUST 14TH A-Hole Studios, also known as Angel Studios, brings us yet another revisionist history. The Brink of War depicts Ronald Reagan as a peacekeeper trying to rid the world of nuclear weapons… and then a flaming unicorn flies out of his rectum. Seriously, you should ignore this mess just the way Reagan ignored a generation of gay men dying on his wretched watch. On a cheerier note: the apocalypse! Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor dig in for dino destruction in The End of Oak Street. This is a freaky-fun flashback to films like Poltergeist and Close Encounters… but with dinosaurs! After a series of unexplained phenomena swirl around their family home, the Platts wake up to find their suburban block transplanted to a strange, savage, interstellar realm. And did we mention the dinosaurs? Pterodactyls swoop, T-rexes stomp, and audiences swoon to the prehistoric mayhem of disaster done right. Two claws up! But wait, there are more mega monsters in store this weekend, courtesy of PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. Our plucky pooches crash land on a jungle island where the bad guys are harvesting havoc and stealing diamonds, all set to the sound of new music by Backstreet Boys (alright!). But if the villains blast the place to bits, they’ll harm the local wildlife, which consists of - you guessed it - dinosaurs. What is it about this release window that attracts so many dinos, and why weren’t they available to crush the Reagan administration in The Brink of War? Damn dinosaurs!

AUGUST 21ST

You can keep a secret, right? If Jason Statham pooped on Mother Teresa’s grave, we’d be all like, “Yay, Statham butt!” He’s dirty-hot meets British-hot, which is a rare, raunchy, royal combo. So, it really doesn’t matter what Mutiny is about; we’re predisposed to loving it. The formulaic narrative revolves around a formulaic cartel trafficking formulaic victims until a formulaic hero saves the day. Even his name is formulaic: Cole Reed. Sounds like a clothing store for douchebags. But since Jason Statham is the star of Mutiny, we’re in! He broods, he flexes, he even rips a thug’s face open with a padlock. Oh, Jason - you hold the key to our heart! Formula seems to be the running theme of this week’s titles. Spa Weekend is basically Bridesmaids/Girls Trip at a salon. And Insidious: Out of the Further mashes up motifs from Flatliners, The Silence of the Lambs, Poltergeist II, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and of course the far superior precursors Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2. Where should a movie lover go to find originality these days? Answer: check out The Magic Faraway Tree. This candy-colored fantasy whisks you away to whimsy, wonder, and whoa that’s a big branch! The title tree houses a vast variety of characters all competing to out-weird each other. So it’s basically Portland, Oregon, but brighter. Yay, diversity! Perhaps we’re over-analyzing the trailer, but the central messages that pop out are: be adventurous, be yourself, be the type who goes out on a limb for loved ones. Sounds like the perfect queer allegory.

In classic Looney Toons fashion, the opening credit sequence for Coyote vs. Acme bites the hand that feeds it. The Warner Bros. logo features small print revealing that the studio is a subsidiary of the Acme Corporation. Funny, right? Except that Warner is whoring itself out to the highest bidder IRL, so it’s less ‘funny haha’ and more ‘billionaires are ruining the world’. Idiots also shows some promise, but we’re massively annoyed by the fact that the film was supposed to be called Shitheads. Opportunity wasted, mediocrity rules. We saved the best for last, which wasn’t much of a stretch. An actual decent film called The Dog Stars explores a dystopian wasteland filled with death, disease, and the dashingly delicious Jacob Elordi. He puts the ‘Man’ in ‘Armageddon’! Navigating the end of the world with an adorbsies canine as his copilot, Jake maneuvers menacing scavengers whilst mourning his departed wife. If she really loved you, she wouldn’t have died, Jacob! Wow, the apocalypse really makes us judgy. All snark aside, The Dog Stars boasts a wildly impressive pedigree, including legendary director Ridley Scott. He started his career by predicting future calamity in sci-fi classics like Alien and Blade Runner and now he’s evoking true tragedy by showing how the year 2020 could just keep happening over and over if we don’t smarten up. But audiences don’t want to learn. Maybe we could all yearn instead? Yearn for more understanding, yearn for a Jacob Elordi/Jason Statham Brokeback Mountain reboot, and yearn for a gayer tomorrow, one movie at a time!

CALIFORNIA’S GOLDEN CULINARY ERA

INSIDE THE 2026 MICHELIN GUIDE BY MICHAEL WESTMAN

mid an electric atmosphere at EVE in Downtown San Diego, the MICHELIN Guide recently unveiled its 2026 selection for California, proving once again that the Golden State continues to set the benchmark for global fine dining. “As one of our legacy destinations in the U.S., California helped set the standard for exceptional dining experiences worth traveling for,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide. “This year is no different as California continues to be a pacesetter for the industry based on our Inspectors’ brilliant discoveries.” The total statewide selection now stands at an impressive 521 eateries across 54 cuisine types. Leading the celebration were two dramatic promotions to the elusive Three MICHELIN Star status, alongside a new Two Star powerhouse and nine newly minted One Star destinations. Kato

Californios | San Francisco (Mexican) Chef Val M. Cantú has redefined modern Mexican gastronomy into something singular, electric, and deeply personal. Combining a passion for Mexico’s rich heritage with masterful technique, Cantú’s menu takes diners on a soaring journey. The humble tortilla becomes a canvas for absolute wizardry: picture a pillowy sourdough tortilla cradling crisp, mezcal-battered black cod brushed with huitlacoche crema, or heirloom white corn tortillas matched with smoked quail enrobed in a complex, dark house mole. Enclos | Sonoma (Contemporary) Tucked inside a sensitively retooled late-1800s Victorian in downtown Sonoma, Chef Brian Limoge’s domain exudes cozy sophistication. The tasting menu marries global influences with produce plucked straight from the affiliated Stone Edge Farm, all laced with subtle nods to Limoge’s New England roots. Standouts include a signature clam chawanmushi that brilliantly evokes the soul of chowder, and hearthroasted quail adorned with artichokes, preserved rose petals, and burnt citrus. Elevated to Two MICHELIN Stars Kato | Los Angeles (Asian) In the cool, polished-concrete expanse of Row DTLA, Chef Jonathan Yao has brought his high-concept vision into full focus. Drawing deftly from his Taiwanese background and LA upbringing, Yao threads a fine line between rustic boldness and precise refinement. Highlights include gently cooked Mt. Lassen trout in a complex broth bolstered by fermented Napa cabbage, and crisp-skinned Peking duck paired with a sesame ball filled with juicy confit. Once a humble BYOB, Kato now boasts an incredible wine list, inventive cocktails, and world-class spirit-free pairings.

THE NINE NEW ONE MICHELIN STAR DESTINATIONS From intimate 11-seat counters to live-fire neighborhood bistros, these nine additions showcase the incredible breadth of California’s culinary talent.

GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA • Corridor 109 (Melrose Hill): Tucked behind sister concept Bar 109, Chef/ Owner Brian Baik runs an intimate 11-seat counter dedicated to raw, pristine seafood imported mostly from Japan. Expect restraint and intense care, featured in dishes like Santa Barbara spiny lobster tartare in a kombu tartlet or charcoal-grilled miso-marinated sawara. • KOJIMA (Sawtelle): Perched on the second floor of an unassuming strip mall, Chef Hayato Kojima works magic without a printed menu. Guests are served simultaneously as Kojima showcases peak seasonal finds, from fried longtooth grouper to crispy grilled unagi and a comforting finish of rice accented with shirasu. • Lielle (Los Angeles): One of the toughest tables in town, Chef Marcus Jernmark offers a product-focused Californian tasting menu that feels precise without ever being fussy. Think aged shima aji crudo with sweet peas or pine-grilled California squab paired with a salad tossed in bread-miso vinaigrette. • Miura (Beverly Hills): Situated along Two Rodeo Drive, Chef Derek Wilcox brings Japanese training and New York polish to this serene omakase counter. Wilcox’s obsession with detail shines as he lightly smokes wild bluefin tuna over rice straw and serves sublime nigiri like creamy cuttlefish from Kagoshima. • Seline (Santa Monica): Expect the unexpected from Chef Dave Beran, whose hyper-seasonal menu treats dining as narrative poetry. His meal might open with an edible garden of succulents over “soil” made of caraway rye, lead into black cod infused with wild bay laurel, and peak with his signature Osetra caviar served over toasted hazelnuts and coffee anglaise. Troubadour (Healdsburg): By day, SingleThread alumni Melissa and Sean McGaughey run a beloved bakery and sandwich shop; by night, the space transforms into a FrenchCalifornian bistro. The classical technique shines through modern dishes like rockfish “bouillabaisse” with saffron-yuzu emulsion and duck breast paired with malted potato cream.

•

Wolfsbane (San Francisco): Chef Rupert Blease and Carrie Blease make their triumphant return to fine dining in Dogpatch.
