A day full of dogs, cats — and smiles By Laura B. Hayden ELLINGTON — Tails wagged and swayed with joy at the pet adoption event held on Oct. 26. There were a lot of happy human faces too as 15 cats and nine dogs attracted forever owners among the animal-lovers of all ages who attended the sixth annual adoption event sponsored by Superior Energy LLC in Vernon. Cats, kittens, puppies, and adult dogs all found homes before the day was over, said Susan Wollschlager of the Connecticut Humane Society. Over $6,000 was donated to the Connecticut Humane Society from matching lemonade stands funds. In addition, Superior Energy, a key sponsor of the event, donated $5,000, and $1,200 was donated by Somers Veterinary Hospital. The site of the event – 287 Somers Road in Ellington – is the future home of the DiFiori Ravioli Shop, which will be opening in 2020 (adding to the DiFiori store located in Rocky

Hill). The owners cooked up hearty meals at the adoption headquarters. There was food, drink, music, and a donation center to aid the Human Society needs to give to pets in need. The event took in much-needed supplies: towels, blankets, peanut butter, pet toys, and pet food brought by guests. There were other booths to go with the donation center, including the humane society booth. Kristen Devean has been volunteering since July. The booth she was manning at the event had information about the humane society and other information about volunteering. The event will return next year. Until then, Wollschlager reminds us that the Connecticut Humane Society is much in need of dry pet food and durable pet toys as well as donations that will go to the care of their pets while the CHS works to find them forever homes.
