Martin Audio Upgrades South Beach Luxury Hotel Audio

miami beach, fl—Audio Video Lighting Innovations (AVLI) has upgraded the pool deck sound systems for two Miami Beach luxury hotels—the Mondrian South Beach and Shelborne South Beach— with Martin Audio CDD systems. At the Shelborne (pictured), the pool deck renovation involved an upgrade to replace a six-year-old audio system that had deteriorated because of the salt air from the oceanside location. The system consists of 14 CDD8-WRs mounted around a long rectangular pool, with cabanas on the north side and lounge chairs and a wall on the south side, with seven speakers per side that mirror each other across the pool deck.

Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) has established itself as the premier launch pad of professional audiovisual technologies. ISE is a titan of tech; more than 80,000 technologists attended the show from around the globe. Amid the high-lumen output and high-decibel chatter at the RAI Amsterdam was a clear refrain: move more AV over IP. Dante Does Video Audinate had the biggest story at ISE. The market dominance of Dante’s networked audio solutions—with more than 1,600 enabled products— naturally prompted the question, When will Dante do video? Thanks to the Dante AV module, audio and video channels can now be individually routable using Dante Controller software. Farewell, matrix switches.

Users can send audio channels to any Dante-enabled products currently available while sending video to any Dante AV-enabled screen. The hardware solution facilitates the interfacing of audio and video with a 1 Gbps network, delivered as a compact, castellated circuit board. What impressed me is that the Dante AV Module is codec-agnostic, allowing manufacturers to utilize the 1 Gbps codec of their choice. Dante is still a proprietary standard, however, and licensing fees will apply.

Two Years of SDVoE ISE 2019 marked the second anniversary of the Software-Defined Video over Ethernet Alliance. With more than 150 interoperable products, SDVoE is supporting more deployments of video over IP. Founding members of the SDVoE Alliance, a nonprofit consortium, are Semtech, Aquantia, Christie Digital, NETGEAR, Sony, and ZeeVee. SDVoE is built around the AptoVision proprietary chipset, but there

is no licensing fee. SDVoE is planted firmly in the 10 Gbps camp, suggesting that 10 Gbps makes the most sense when all costs, including switchers and endpoints, are considered.

Avnu Milan: Open Standard, IEEE Members of the Avnu Alliance Thanks to the Dante AV module, audio celebrated the Milan protocol and video channels are now individually in Amsterdam. Milan supports routable using Dante Controller software. interoperability at the application layer and combines the time sync and deterministic benefits of the AVB open standard with pro AV market-defined device requirements at both the network and the application layer. Members and adopters of the licensing-free AVB point to its place with the IEEE network/IT industry as a way to ensure its long-term relevance.

Avnu members also shared Milan news. L-Acoustics has published an open source, free-to-use AVDECC Library that is fully Milan compatible with the Milan Discovery, Connection & Control Specification for Listeners & Talkers. This open-source library offers a set of tools for controlling AVB and Milan devices using the AVDECC (IEEE1722.1) protocol and meets Avnu Milan specifications.

Dante AV, Avnu Milan, and SDVoE are three distinct platforms promising to take AV over IP into the next stage of a more “interoperable” union. All three are investing heavily in education, outreach, and building their unique communities.

Inside Panduit’s Acquisition of Atlona: ‘It’s All Positive’

Global network infrastructure and industrial wiring solutions company Panduit has completed its acquisition of audiovisual systems provider Atlona. According to both companies, the deal was a strategic one with clear benefits for each side.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for us that has us really excited,” said Tom Kelly, Panduit’s vice president of enterprise business. Panduit has a deep expertise in passive Layer-1 solutions, he said, but its customers had been asking about active components and conference room solutions. “This really allows us to completely have those conversations now, and working with Atlona and having a solution offering that covers the full spectrum of pro AV concerns in the commercial space, we can facilitate those conversations, pass leads through to our partner community, and deliver a global solution that we really were not able to before.”

For Ilya Khayn, co-founder and CEO of Atlona, it’s business as usual—but better. “The beauty of the partnership is it allows Atlona to continue to drive our objectives and the strategy we’ve had over the past 15 years,” he said. “The one big advantage is we will now be able to offer a lot more benefits to our customers by generating a lot more demand out in the field. By leveraging all the resources and the global infrastructure available with Panduit—whether it’s global experience centers, warehouses, service centers, salespeople, sales engineers, tech support, and all other aspects—we’ll be able to offer a higher level of service to our customers, stay even more focused on pro AV, continue to innovate, and continue to offer more solutions for our customers, integrators, and end users. It’s all positive across the board and we’re super excited about it.”

Likewise, Kelly is optimistic about the benefits of leveraging Atlona’s solutions through Panduit’s established global channels. “People want to have a consistent, unified platform that all runs on Ethernet,” he said. “With Atlona’s AV over IP solution, we want to help train those partners and ensure that the end users get the consistent, reliable solution they’re after, and that they can get it all over the world and in a timely fashion through our distribution network.”

nothing about the company’s structure or personnel will change as a result of the acquisition. “Atlona is staying in place and will continue to operate in San Jose, and with the same sales team out in the field and same global operations,” Lobban said. “It’s just an opportunity to expand.” Khayn said that following Atlona’s internal announcement of the deal on Jan. 15, there was a “very positive spirit across the board.”

Kelly stressed that Panduit is a “very strategic buyer” and that the acquisition—which was the result of two years of discussions between the companies—only went through after a careful evaluation of the synergistic natures of their business philosophies. “We got a sense of the culture that Atlona had, and how similar it was to the Panduit culture— focused on innovation, focused on trying to simplify complicated problems that our customers have, and an interest in growing through more complete solutions,” Kelly said. “All of these things gathered steam and helped the case for a very strategic acquisition where we could grow together and have Atlona operate as a standalone business unit inside Panduit’s enterprise business, and really capitalize on all the great investments they’ve made over a number of years.”

“Every piece of the company is important: people, culture, market share, brand. Everything comes together, and we’ll continue to focus on what we do well, and continue to stay focused on that area and innovate,” he concluded. “Customers will continue to get the same level of service, or better. Altia Systems, manufacturer of the PanaCast 2 180-degree panoramic 4K camera system, worked closely with Ravi Sharma, the head of collaboration and AV services at Uber, and Uber’s technical team to deploy the innovative equipment and software as a part of Uber’s AV 2.0 initiative. Uber is also using PanaCast’s Intelligent Vision products, including Intelligent Zoom and PanaCast Vivid, to help enhance participants’ experience with autonomous intelligent technology.

news Seizing the Opportunity Harman’s Mohit Parasher Talks the Reconstruction of Harman Pro

“Harman Pro Announces Workplace Consolidation” was the headline heard ‘round the pro AV world in September 2017. The announcement caused a bit of a panic for employees, integrators, and customers. “The changes we announced are the culmination of a transformation that the Professional Solutions Division has been undergoing for the last two years to better serve our customers, increase our competitiveness, and accelerate new product innovations,” David Glaubke, director of public relations, global professional solutions, Harman International, said at the time. The restructuring plan included new experience centers around the world and “Centers of Competency” around the U.S. to allow the company’s engineers to focus on critical product differentiations instead of requiring them to develop motors, mechanical structures, and other supporting elements.

Over the last 18 months, Harman has delivered on its promises to create new products and places. SCN recently sat down with Mohit Parasher, Harman International’s EVP and president, professional solutions, at the company’s L.A. Experience Center to discuss the evolution of Harman Pro over the past 18 months.

Acquisition “We went through a massive change last year, and I’m really glad,” said Parasher when asked about the state of Harman Pro in 2019. “Because, despite that change, we grew our revenue, we grew our profit, we grew order bookings, and so I think we saw really good growth despite all of the disruption.”

The changes began—at least behind the scenes—when Samsung Electronics acquired Harman International for around $8 billion in November 2016, with the deal closing in mid-2017.

Harman, Parasher said, was creating a lot of pieces of the pro AV puzzle—audio, video, control, and lighting—but was missing the display side of the business, which would bring everything together.

The company found that missing piece with Samsung. “As things get connected, there is no better connectivity company than Samsung in the world. [Samsung has] billions of devices out there that are connected either to a network or to something else. That technology and expertise comes in handy for our pro side. The combination of audio, video, lighting, control, and displays is very powerful.”

“We were very clear from day one. Samsung was very clear saying ‘This is a business we’re going to invest in and we’re going to grow.’ True to our word, as part of Samsung, we have invested in the business—time, energy, new hires, investing in experience centers,” added Parasher.

“We have a plan and we continue to invest. We’re churning out products.

We had a pretty decent year, despite all the change, launching some good products that were extremely well-received by the industry.”

Creating the Right Environment Parasher acknowledged that change can be hard—and that he knows it was difficult for Harman employees, but he hopes that by setting a clear direction and vision for the company, the staff will continue to achieve company goals and enjoy working for the company.

“I believe that a positive morale depends on if you’re doing something big and purposeful.” He said that first and foremost, companies need to have a well-defined purpose, followed by executing against that purpose and clearly identifying milestones. “As you keep delivering [on your purpose and milestone], it creates a positive morale.”

One of the milestones in Harman’s journey was creating its Centers of Competency. Prior to the restructuring, the company’s audio brands were scattered around the country and, according to Parasher, were unable to leverage the full power of the combined brands because the brands were very siloed. “There was a huge potential to combine them

all and put them in a platform [the Centers of Competency], where it is engineering—not only hardware, but more importantly, applications and software—sales and marketing, after-sales service, tech support, pre-sales,” he said. “We did that in a very fast-paced way. People call it a restructure; I call it ‘reconstruction.’”

Part of the reconstruction includes ensuring employees have the tools they need to do their jobs. Parasher said they are investing in an “enormous amount” of cross training. “Peer-to-peer learning is much more important—especially on the engineering side—than anyone just sitting and teaching in the classroom. The peer-to-peer learning is the main reason why we consolidated our engineering centers. You’ve got to put the engineers under one roof, on one floor, because what happens when they meet at the proverbial water cooler is very, very important. That’s where the real learning happens, more than some guy teaching a master class on electronics.”

Harman has created a large repository of its engineering knowledge— terabytes and terabytes, according to Parsher—on one platform where any of the company’s engineers can access anything, at any time, and learn from one another. “We created an environment for active learning, rather than just training, because training is one-way. But if you create the right environment, put people under one roof, create the infrastructure for them to easily access the information, we’re creating an environment for learning, which is much more impactful.”

With the new centers and learning environment, Parasher believes the company is on its way to successfully managing change for its employees, for the present and the future. “So far, we have the right purpose, we have started on our journey, and we are right on target to achieve what we committed to as a team,” he said. “We believe we have an opportunity and a responsibility—as a team—to transform the pro AV industry. We have this portfolio of products, this great team, a great business channel, and a great owner—Samsung—who is willing to invest. There’s no excuse. It’s a responsibility to get in there and say ‘Okay, what do you think the industry should look like?’ and then we must drive toward that and take our steps one at a time, have our milestones laid out. We started that journey 12 to 18 months ago and I’m very pleased with where we are.”

Looking Ahead Harman has noticed positive results from its reconstruction plan.

“We are already seeing the positive impact from the restructuring we completed last year. In fact, 2018 was a record year for orders booked,” Parasher said. “This was driven by our highest-ever year of audio product sales, as well as record growth in sales outside of the U.S. In addition to this record setting revenue, we also drove strong growth in profitability.”

More than 3,000 attended the event at Frankfurt Airport and witnessed the famous yellow crane logo change to white with a blue circle around it. Christie Pandoras Box ensured a perfect feed for the projection mapping onto a Boeing 747-800, the first Lufthansa aircraft with the new design. The show and projected content were designed and produced by Stein Communication.

The entire concept, consisting of the video mapping with corresponding light and sound effects, a 1,969-square-foot LED sky, soundscapes, and various interactive elements, made a big impact on the audience.

AVIXA’s latest Pro-AV Business Index shows pro AV sales bounced back at the start of the new year after a seasonal lull in the final months of 2018. The AV Sales (AVI-S) Index was 60.6 in January, up from December’s 58 but one point lower than January 2018. Any index above 50 indicates growth.

“Consistent with last month’s results, we continue to find seasonality to be the primary driver of shifts in the AV Sales Index at this time,” said Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence for AVIXA. “Though we are one percentage point lower than the results at the same time last year, this can be viewed as essentially equivalent. Perhaps most important of all, pro AV remains in a growth mode month after month, revealing the strong sales pipelines enjoyed by most companies within the industry.”

The U.S. job market experienced a second consecutive month of growth, with 304,000 jobs added in January, well over the expected 170,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

However, December’s growth was substantially revised from 312,000 jobs to a still solid 222,000.

Unemployment increased one-tenth of 1 percent to 4.0 thanks to an influx of workers into the labor force.

The AV Employment Index (AVI-E) jumped up to 62.7 in January from 55.6 in December. This is five points higher than January 2018.

Index survey respondents continue to stress how difficult it is to find good workers. An AV end user in Asia Pacific commented that “the trained resource pool is weak. Hiring continues to be challenging.” AVIXA analysts say it’s unclear if the January

growth is a function of newly qualified workers, lower standards, or inexplicable reasons.

Among students who use or interact with specific AV technologies, two-thirds agree that video walls, wireless presentation systems, and interactive whiteboards enhance the learning experience most. At the same time, technologies such as security and surveillance, environmental, and control systems—technologies with which students are less likely to interact—tend to be perceived as less impactful.

Four-fifths of AV integration firms work in education, driving nearly a quarter of their annual revenues—again highlighting the relative importance of the pro AV role in higher education. However, this may not be surprising, as the pro AV community is historically rooted in this market. While there is clearly ample opportunity for AV providers to work within the space, lack of familiarity with the category is the primary reason more integrators are not serving the market. Regardless, integrators appear to be aware of the growth potential, with 95 percent indicating plans to enter the market in the near future.

For AV providers seeking relationships with higher education institutions, it’s easier to identify the key players here than in other industries.

Higher education institutions tend to have more staff directly allocated to managing AV that other markets, which reflects their high degree of investment and commitment to AV technology. AV has been a part of the classroom experience for so long, higher education institutions have brought resources in-house to manage it. Nearly 50 percent of the higher education institutions surveyed report that internal technical/AV managers lead AV systems integration projects, and 15 percent report that the IT department does.

NSCA Report Indicates Construction Growth Ahead NSCA’s Electronic Systems Outlook report has been updated for Winter 2018. It includes information based on actual data from January through November 2018, as well as forecasted information for 2019 and beyond.

NSCA partners with FMI to provide this report, which offers the most recent, most relevant indicators of business opportunities for integrators. By tracking new construction starts and renovations across multiple markets—including healthcare, lodging, retail, education, house of worship, and more—NSCA pinpoints which verticals should do well in 2019 and years to come.

Total U.S. construction spending put in place is expected to end up 5 percent higher in 2018 versus 2017. In 2019, the organization forecasts a 3 percent increase in total construction spending over 2018.

“This report makes it easier for members to decide where to focus their efforts in specific regions of the country,” said NSCA executive director Chuck Wilson. “Primary growth segments in 2019 are expected to include corporate offices, education, government, and lodging—all with forecasted growth rates of 5 percent or more.”

Most other segments are likely to grow (roughly with the rate of inflation) and are considered stable. The house of worship market is the only segment expected to decline in 2019.

CHUCK COLLINS: I am the vice president of sales in North America.

I manage our team of regional sales managers and manufacturer’s representatives in our commercial AV channel, as well as our residential channel.

SCN: How long have you been at this position?

CC: I have been with Digital Projection for 22 years, and I have been in my current position for about 12 years. I have been fortunate to work with a great group of professionals who make coming into work both rewarding and enjoyable.

SCN: How has your background prepared you for your role?

CC: I started my career as a commercial AV dealer salesperson, then as a regional manager for a manufacturer, and while I have never worked as a manufacturer’s representative, I have always admired them. Having worked in both worlds allows me to more effectively nurture and maintain key relationships that are beneficial for everyone involved.

SCN: What are your shortand long-term goals?

CC: My short-term goal is to continue to have fun in everything I do. My longterm goals are to stay curious, continue to learn, and live with passion. On a more personal note, one of my long-term goals is to run a half marathon.

SCN: What is the greatest challenge you face?

CC: The greatest challenge I face today is conveying the unique value proposition of Digital Projection in a marketplace that is packed with great competitors.

SCN: Are there new initiatives we are likely to see from Digital Projection?

CC: A couple of years ago Digital Projection introduced the Radiance Direct View LED product. Since then, we’ve been able to create some really amazing visual solutions in a wide variety of environments—and we will continue to expand on our success with those products.

As far as projectors, you will see us expanding our product line at the lower end with more affordable base models. The higher end will include innovative products that feature new light sources, HFR, and HDR.

The Lost Art of Troubleshooting Let’s talk about perseverance under pressure. The way you handle yourself in the heat of battle is a determining factor of success in our industry. How do you react when things suddenly and most unexpectedly go awry? Do you explode into full-blown panic, snatching cables, and swapping pieces of gear in and out of the system in a cold sweat frenzy? Or do you sit quietly for a moment and methodically assess the situation at hand?

Oddly enough, level-headed thinking tends to be the better answer.

A Very Common Problem There are surely some readers who scoff at such simple advice, but the reality is that any of us can be tempted to panic when faced with a malfunctioning or non-functioning system. Understanding, remembering, and following the simple steps can be crucial in these moments—so much so that it can affect your bottom line both in the short and long term.

Work in the industry long enough—although it won’t take too long before you run into this—and you will find yourself in a situation where, for no apparent reason, things simply are not functioning as expected.

The band starts in half an hour and the lead singer’s monitor mix isn’t working. Or maybe you’re dealing with a no-audio zone on system commission day while the proud owner of the brand new system upgrade watches anxiously over your shoulder.

Chances are you have felt the heat of battle, and the law of averages dictates that you’ll feel that crunch again sometime soon. It’s important to note that the perception of competence is tied directly to how quickly and efficiently these issues are resolved.

Should calamity ensue, confidence begins to erode. If the issue remains unresolved, valued accounts can slip away.

However, if one responds with a savant-like, laser-focused plan of attack that results in a successful diagnosis and expert repair, the word of your audio prowess will spread like wildfire throughout the community. The art of troubleshooting is growing your business!

Slow Down Your Troubleshooting The most common mistake in troubleshooting happens right away, when you first discover the problem and the adrenaline kicks in. Human nature, at least when it comes to systems integration, seems to be an attempt to make multiple changes in a single step.

Perhaps you’re familiar with this kind of thinking: “Quick! Change the mic cable while I patch it into another channel in the snake and move it into another channel on the board!”

What’s wrong with this picture? From an investigative perspective, everything.

Much like the art of perfecting a live mix, the secret lies in incremental changes. Take one thing at a time and carefully note the results stemming from each change. From there, you can move into a codified and process-based approach.

Common Sense Can Be Your Most Powerful Tool Although there are some powerful, very handy tools an AV professional can invest in to make life easier in such situations—like signal-sniffing wands or digital multi-meters, for example—sometimes common sense is a more powerful weapon.

To illustrate, let’s say we have a zone in a building where no sound is present. Where some may panic and make random assumptions based

on little more than gut instinct, it is the cooler heads that will prevail.

From this measured approach, a flow chart begins to materialize.

Are there other zones in the building that do have audio? The answer to this question is a tool that will guide your response.

If we move the speaker line over to that amplifier output, do we have audio now? If so, the speaker and speaker line have been confirmed “good.”

“The reality of this industry is that it isn’t how good you are when everything goes as expected, it’s how good you are when the music suddenly stops.”

Move the speaker line back to where it started, and then move the input feeding the live zone over to the input for the amplifier channel in question. If the dead zone comes to life, we now know the amplifier channel is also functional.

Continuing the investigation as we work our way upstream in the signal flow, What happens if we reconnect the original cable to the amp input for the problem area, and then move the other end to the output that is driving the “happy zone”? If audio returns once again to the zone in question, we have established everything between processor and speaker to be functional.

When we make one small change at a time, we narrow the focus until we pinpoint, with certainty, the exact source of trouble. The alternative—pulling everything out of the system and sending it back to the manufacturer for a “wellness check”—simply isn’t viable. Your system will be crippled while you await multiple and inevitable “no malfunction found” reports from various service centers.

It is when faced with these scenarios that the art of troubleshooting becomes critical to your business.

Partnering for Success Granted, it isn’t always easy to follow these simple steps when the time comes, but if you at least understand the right thing to do, and know that there is an established and correct approach to address issues as they arise, that will make the difference. You will more likely be perceived as a professional, not simply someone out of their depth.

All that said, you don’t need to go it alone on every job. A manufacturing partner who offers quick and reliable support is crucial in these moments. Make sure you’re using brands whose technicians can be reached easily when a problem arises. The industry veterans working support have heard it all before, know the right questions to ask, and can help you stay on the right path when the pressure is on.

A Star Is Born Doc Shares Ear Advice for Audio Pros Talk about getting typecast. When actor/writer/director Bradley Cooper directed the recent hit remake of A Star Is Born, he hired William Slattery to play a hearing specialist. The role wasn’t much of a stretch because Slattery is, in fact, the actor’s real-life ear doctor.

Brought in for a scene set at Coachella in which he tells Cooper’s rock star character about hearing loss, the M.D. brought veracity to the moment. As president of the House Clinic, a high-profile center for ear disease and neurological disorders in Los Angeles, he’s treated audio engineers and musicians for decades.

“What we see among audio professionals is one of two things— either they are extremely anxious about their hearing and they come in anytime there’s a change, or they’re just the opposite: They’re so busy that they tend to ignore it and not come in for their visit,” he said. “The most important thing with hearing is evaluation and then protection.”

While hearing preservation is key to the livelihood of anyone working in pro audio, not everyone is diligent about getting their ears checked.

Perhaps it’s the anticipation of bad news, or the mistaken idea that hearing loss is an inevitable occupational hazard and thus isn’t worth getting tested for. However, Slattery shared, some pros may be in for a welcome surprise next time they get checked.

“A lot of times in the music industry and with sound engineers, people have this feeling that their hearing is much worse than it actually is,” he explained. “The problem is that these are people who have spent so much time tuning their ears to be able to pick up subtle little differences in sound quality, and as a result, they are much more sensitive to any type of change within the ear. Because of that, many times they think there’s some major problem and they’re fearful, not just for their hearing but for their career.”

Acknowledging that “probably the majority of people in the music industry have some issues with their ears,” Slattery pointed out that gradual hearing loss comes from more than just exposure to high decibels. “In our 20s, we start to lose some of the very high frequencies, and that’s normal—but because sound engineers work so hard to tune their ears, they can get anxious about that change. You tell them, ‘Wait a minute—this is just the aging process,’ and sometimes they’re relieved to discover they haven’t hurt themselves over the years, that they’re actually doing a good job of taking care of their hearing. That’s an important part, providing some reassurance along with ‘here’s where you’re at and here’s things that you can do to help it.’”

What are some of those things? Wearing hearing protection, whether earplugs or in-ear monitors, will help, as will avoiding loud noise when possible to prevent further damage. Another suggestion is to look into pharmaceutical treatments. “Is there anything that’s on the market that I can say is proven to rescue damaged hearing? At this point and time, no,” Slattery said, “but the advice I give to my sound engineers and musicians is that, while there is no product approved and no clinical trial that looks at protection long-term in the music industry, we can look at some interesting studies the military has done that can be helpful.”

To that end, he cited an Israeli military study that gave magnesium supplements to people going through firearms training. “Those who had higher magnesium levels actually found that it was somewhat protective of their ears,” he noted. Meanwhile, another study gave N-acetylcysteine (NAC) supplements to U.S. Marines—a move that helped protect their hearing against noise exposure.

“That’s not necessarily rescue,” he quickly added, “but I tell people, ‘Look, if you’re going to be exposed to some loud noise for a while, you might want to consider a magnesium supplement and an NAC supplement, at least for a couple of days before you’re going to be exposed to that.’ Even so, you have to be careful about taking something

like this on a long-term basis because it is a nutritional supplement, and that’s another reason to talk to a hearing professional—so you can look at what are some possibilities that may be appropriate for you.”

In Slattery’s case, talking with a patient about hearing issues had one interesting side effect—he wound up in A Star Is Born. Cooper consulted with him to ensure that the script’s medical content was accurate, and that led to inviting the doctor to essentially play himself.

“Once I got to Coachella, I told Bradley I had my lines memorized, and he said, ‘Don’t worry. We’re going to ad lib it,’” Slattery recounted.

“It was funny because normally as a physician, you try not to be too technical with your discussion because you want to make sure you’re conveying complex ideas in a way that everyone can understand. Of course, we start filming and it’s ‘No, no, get more technical. This will be great for the movie,’ so we started talking about 4 kHz and the noise notch and all that.” Asked if he’s now campaigning to win an Oscar, Slattery laughed: “Sure, I’m out to win the Best Supporting, Supporting Actor category.”

Consumers want to bring their own technology into professional applications, like the boardroom. As Chris Mertens of Samsung said, “BYOD is not a fad, but a way of life.”

A Match Made in Heaven?

INSIGHT INTO PRO AV’S LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY

ess than a decade ago, pro AV technology was thought to be the premier equipment market—the industry was untouchable and at the forefront of innovation. Many home technologies were born out of the AV market, and at-home-AV research and development was often started with professional R&D. Today the opposite is occurring, it seems.

Harman’s engineering team, for example, is leveraging technology drawn from the company’s connected car business. “Nobody in the pro industry can afford the thousands of engineers needed to develop secure Linux products,” said Mohit Parasher, president, Harman Professional Solutions. “We have access to that because that development was done for our connected car business. We can borrow 80 percent of the work and bring it into the pro industry. The same thing with the consumer side, and the services side, and from Samsung, etc.”

The Beginnings How did it all start? David Frangioni, founder of Audio One, says we can blame (or thank) Apple. “The proliferation of consumer audio consumption basically started with home formats such as surround sound systems

and then really went into high gear after the iPod took off,” he said. “All of a sudden the experience of what content sounds like in headphones became paramount, and music started to be mixed for low resolution instead of just high resolution. Then the onslaught of home audio and video systems meant that pros

began mixing media content—movies, games, et cetera—for home environments instead of primarily for commercial spaces.”

Bradford Benn, CTS, longtime AV professional and current end user, agrees and says it has a lot to do with the user experience.

“My belief that the encroachment of home/ consumer technology came to professional environments as a result of consumer usability outpacing the commercial market. As an example, someone can activate the voice assistant on their mobile device/telephone and say ‘FaceTime with Megan Dutta.’ The phone will dutifully make the call, and one gets to speak with Megan while also seeing her. From there, it is a short interpolation to the idea of wanting to do that in my office as well. If my consumer device can do it for under $500, why can’t the $10,000 system do the same?”

Office workers in particular want to bring consumer technology into their professional life, especially into the board room. “In recent years, [consumer] technology has been empowering customers with the ability to choose the right solutions to grow their businesses,” said Chris Mertens, vice president of end user sales and B2B displays for Samsung. “This course has been creating opportunities across businesses; as an example, the proliferation of unifiedcommunications-as-a-service over the past several years disrupted how business users collaborate. People can now engage with internal stakeholders and customers across the country without foregoing that true-to life experience of being in the same room.

BYOD is not a fad, but a way of life.”

Safety and Security Many AV pros have begrudgingly brought consumer technology into their world—again, particularly in the workplace. But does that make sense and it is safe and secure?

Professionals often think about video streaming and sharing using devices like Amazon Fire TV or Google Chromecast, according to Benn, and they want to have that experience in the office. “However, what most people forget is that their home is a very small, closed system. A typical house will have four users, each with a mobile device, all on the same network, and with varying levels of security. Everyone forgets the time it took to set everything up. From then on, it just worked. Most people don’t ask, ‘How secure is this situation? Can people eavesdrop on me?

Can people see my screen share?’”

From an end user’s perspective, Benn wants integrators to be hyper-aware of the risks with any technology on his network—and not only from a security viewpoint, but also from a functionality viewpoint. Integrators should be doing their homework and thinking about strict firewalls, VPN connections, protocol filters, and having multiple devices accessed by multiple users.

tional, understands Benn’s concerns and says integrators should also look at the products they are installing. “The problem is that some manufacturers develop devices that are not secure, and thus they are vulnerable to being hacked. In pro AV, this concern is amplified because you aren’t just dealing with the security of a single-family home or network.”

“When an attack occurs, the first person the customer is going to call is their integrator, which puts [the integrator] at risk of losing customers,” added Corbin. “It is on the manufacturer to make sure their products and the data collected on each of those devices is secure, and it is on the integrator to carefully select manufacturer partners that they know take security seriously.”

Benn advises that integrators be upfront and honest about their level of expertise in terms of security. “There are people who specialize in network and device security— reach out to them. Be ready to pay for that service, don’t just follow what you read on the Internet. While, yes, there is much good information out there, if there is a problem, you don’t have someone to follow up with. [The reasoning behind this] is no different than why integrators charge for their expertise in configuring AV systems.”

He points out that security is also a great way to maintain healthy relationships with customers, or even a way to create recurring revenue streams. “Staying up to date with security patches can be bothersome for some companies—it is a great opportunity to reach out to customers and make sure that they are safe

and aware of your company. Plus, as is often said, security is a journey, not a destination.”

It seems the better strategy is to find the advantages and weaknesses and then create accessory products that enhance the platforms for commercial use.” *

Bringing It All Together The marriage of consumer and professional technology isn’t ending anytime soon, according to the experts, but it’s not something AV technologists need to fear.

“Consumer technology has led the way to enabling better experiences in pro AV. eyond the glow of the largeformat digital displays that replaced whiteboards and projectors in many learning environments, something even bigger is brewing.

AV has had a positive impact on the education market, but in terms of real innovation, not much has changed in the typical classroom. Today’s passive AV learning tools—essentially large, mounted screens hardwired to an AV source like a laptop or fed a beam from a projector—are really just bigger, more attractive versions of the old overhead projectors from decades ago.

A new trend in education is starting to change that paradigm, and alter AV requirements in the process.

Active Learning The concept of active learning, a classroom philosophy that engages students in the learning process and aims to prepare them for

“The shift I’m seeing is that we went from selling individual AV systems to selling digital platforms that connect the classrooms,” Routman said.

As he pointed out, though, there are no true plug-and-play systems for active learning.

And with the multitude of collaboration platforms and ecosystems on the market, there may never be an easy solution for most laypeople. That leaves an opening for AV integrators, who can help universities and secondary school educators establish systems that support their teaching methods in a field that remains largely undefined.

“We have university people come to us and say, ‘Hey, this is what we have in mind, we want to try something new,’” he said. “People are coming up with their own ways of doing

We need speech reinforcement. We need to be able to show content from everyone’s team. I think today, that is the biggest driving factor.”

Michelle Hull, a project manager at Level 3 Audiovisual, is seeing similar trends in clients’ needs, and is working to meet them so clients can “stay relevant in the ever-changing world.

“AV installations are being driven by the increased use of technologies such as wireless sharing, collaborative products, [and] videoconferencing—mainly soft codec,” she noted.

Regardless of how active learning is defined, the screens and interfaces that allow collaboration in wired or wireless environments are still essential equipment. For every cloud-

in minimizing and disguising the AV footprint, Routman cautions against the temptation to place building aesthetics over actual learning functionality. Streamlined designs create interesting spaces, but viewing distance and angles must be the main consideration—after all, AV is only as effective as its implementation.

“We were looking at a classroom recently where the projector was offset to the left side of the room, so only people on the left side of the classroom could really see what was going on,” he said. “They did this because they didn’t want to block the beautiful glass wall they had.

“AV quality being sacrificed for aesthetics I think is detrimental to a learning environment.

From a Distance Hull said that distance learning is accelerating the adoption of collaborative environments in the education market based on platforms such as Zoom. Simplicity is always the best way to eliminate wasted time and distractions in making systems work together, she noted.

“There are so many online course options available now that require video capture,” said Hull. “Sometimes these systems are designed not taking into account the ever-changing end user. They need to be as simple to operate as your iPhone.”

Routman said that replacing outdated technology eliminates unnecessary complexity, such as having a large switcher to route and control all the different content sources in the classroom.

“The user experience is much better when it’s automated,” he added. “You plug in your laptop and it just shows up without having to push a button.”

Such environments enable universities to not only deliver better classroom instruction for both on- and off-site students, but also to house information in easy-to-access, centralized databases—often shared through the cloud.

“For things like distance learning, you’ve got web conferencing, but then you’ve got the whole arena for capture and content management,” said Routman.

Both Routman and Hull note that bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) is still at play in the education market, driven by the expectations of digital-native students who can be more adept at finding solutions to connectivity issues than classroom instructors.

Designing systems that accommodate third-party devices isn’t going away.

“These are young people who have had smartphones in their pockets since their early teens,” explained Routman. “I think they expect to be able to use any device—whether it’s a phone, Android or iOS, a tablet, or a laptop. They expect to be able to pull information onto

those devices for their class work, and they expect to be able to use it in a classroom and connect it somehow.”

As the education market continues to pursue collaborative learning environments, AV designers and integrators are uncovering opportunities and developing solutions to

ow that the hullabaloo of CES and ISE have passed, the industry is turning its focus to Digital Signage Expo (DSE), a comprehensive international event dedicated to digital signage solutions from retail to entertainment and beyond. “Select a partner who truly understands what people want and need out of their experiences—for example, a designer who understands how people shop if you’re in the retail sector of digital signage,” he recommended. “Look for a pedigree that goes beyond just digital signage and is inclusive of data-driven experiences.”

“The reality is that the majority of designers are hybrid practitioners.

They can understand the tech, but the execution of it is not necessarily something they want to take on,” Meszaros said. “Both integrators and designers need to understand that they have a role in the project, but they need to be flexible about what the role actually is. No content agency or designer wants to be told how something should come together—they want an open forum for collaboration.”

2019 and Beyond Digital Signage Expo typically sets the tone for the industry, debuting new technologies, providing an environment for fostering new (and old) relationships, and educating the community about the latest business and tech trends.

Braun had one final bit of advice for attendees: “The most important thing to do at the show—from this consultant’s perspective—is to listen and get out of one’s own bubble and comfort zone. Listen to the end user attendees. Listen to the exhibitors and their perspectives and then compare. The truth lies beyond what we know today.”

orthern Quest Resort & Casino, located in Spokane, WA, offers luxurious accommodations, Vegas-style gambling, a spa, and over a dozen restaurants, bars, and lounges. One of the most popular spots in the resort is Epic Sports Bar, a comfortable venue featuring upscale pub fare that opens every day at 7 a.m. Epic’s guests can watch sporting events at any time of day—while enjoying breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

To satisfy the large number of people drawn to the wide variety of sporting events on offer at the bar, high-quality displays were a must. However, constructing and maintaining the large screen was a challenge. The bar originally relied on an old TV screen, which was then upgraded to a movie screen and two sizable projectors that would play content through the day. However, it was difficult—if not impossible—to clean the screen, and when the HVAC system was in use, the screen would shake. Further, the projectors proved to be quite noisy and the cost of replacing them was astronomical.

Road to Rebirth TEXAS CHURCH UPGRADES WITH VIDEO WALL TECHNOLOGY AND NEW SOUND

S

hiloh Road Church of Christ in Tyler, TX, emphasizes parishioners and not property. The words “A church isn’t a building, it’s the people” are featured prominently on its website. But the needs of the building were recently addressed when the organization decided to remodel its sanctuary, which had been built in the 1970s.

Sunday Haus, a house of worship-focused construction firm in Weatherford, TX, was chosen as the general contractor for the project—the company built the original sanctuary some 40-plus years ago and has completed many projects for the church since. The team at Sunday Haus had worked on several developments with AVIXA APExdesignated integrator Electro Acoustics and previous clients had been impressed with their work together. Bob Schumacher, owner of Sunday Haus, turned to Chris Jordan, CTS, president and chief steward, Electro Acoustics, for the AV side of the project at Shiloh Road.

“The client wanted to remodel the sanctuary to have a more modern look, feel, and technology system—not only a technology makeover but an entire room makeover,” said Jordan.

Seeing the Light As part of the AV upgrade, the church wanted to ensure worshippers could not only hear the music, but could see it. Shiloh Road is an a cappella congregation and its members sing multiple harmonies during worship. The building needed a video system that was “large enough and high enough resolution” to display musical notes as well as lyrics.

The system would also need to be able to broadcast videos during baptisms and, at other times, showcase announcements.

One of the most significant challenges in designing this AV system was accommodating a large stained glass window in the sanctuary.

The window was “stunning,” according to Jordan, but its beauty was obscured by an old speaker/screen/air duct chase. The obstruction had to go, but its removal would lead to more ambient lighting in the room.

To add to the challenge, the side walls of the sanctuary include clear glass windows, further increasing the ambient lighting.

As visual options were discussed, Jordan and his team saw that video walls were the most obvious solution for the space. Because of their ability to showcase high-brightness, high-contrast images with deep color saturation, the team chose Absen 4mm LED displays for the installation.

Content for the displays is created and showcased through Renewed Vision ProPresenter on a Mac computer. Videos presented during baptisms are switched using an Extron IN1608 xi scaling presentation switcher.

Sound It Out While the LED video walls were an “essential element of the success of the room,” says Jordan, “much work was done to improve the room’s acoustics and enhance the [congregation’s] a cappella signing.” The team planned diffusion for the rear walls to reflect the congregants’ voices back into the room, creating a sense of unity while preventing potential echoes.

The Electro Acoustics team installed two d&b audiotechnik Yi10P loudspeakers, along with four d&b E6 loudspeakers and two 8S loudspeakers for delays. A d&b 27s cardioid subwoofer was selected for its ability to “provide rich low-end to the congregation while limiting the amount of energy on stage,” added Jordan. “The quality of spoken word and congregational singing was of utmost importance, so d&b was an easy choice because of their ability to reproduce clear, natural sound evenly to the entire room.”

In addition, the sanctuary ceiling was upgraded with “acoustically white reflective clouds instead of dark wood,” said Jordan. “Not only did this update result in a more pleasing room to sing in, but it also reflected the natural light from the room. The room is so much brighter, naturally lit, and cheerful. It is a remarkable improvement.”

The What Else: The ZyPer Management Platform 2.0 includes new multiview capabilities, tools for more rapid deployment, APIs for the industry’s most popular third-party control systems, expanded administration functions for user access and security, and the ability to configure and control video walls as large as 81 screens.

It is designed for use with video networks employing ZeeVee ZyPer4K, ZyPerUHD, and ZyPerHD product lines.

Among the key features of the ZyPer Management Platform 2.0 are: fast multiview transitions for implementing picture-in-picture functionality; the ability to send compressed audio in Fast-Switched mode as well as Genlocked mode; increased maximum video wall size to 9x9 from 5x5, as well as support for custom wall sizes such as 6x3; all encoders and decoders can be set up in a single text-based configuration grid for faster system setup and monitoring; independent routing of RS232 and IR signals on ZyPerUHD to any place, any time (encoder to decoder); ability to save and restore server database of system configuration, encoder/decoder setup, as well as wall and multiview parameters; and new/updated zone commands that can be managed from the API, which is a benefit to those not using ZeeVee’s GUI. In addition, the new API includes software modules for accommodating control systems from Crestron, Barco Overture, Control4, RTI, and Q-SYS, as well as continued support for SAVI and DTVGameControl.

Clear-Com V-Series Iris Panels

The What: Clear-Com’s V-Series Iris Panels, which provide Eclipse HX users with low latency audio over IP (AoIP) using AES67, are now shipping.

The What Else: The V-Series Iris panel can monitor and send communications over three concurrent AES67-compliant uncompressed audio IP streams, enabling systems to deliver high-quality uncompressed audio from intercom user to user with significantly reduced latency. When connected to Clear-Com’s new high-density E-IPA card, which is natively AES67 compliant, users can deploy up to 64 Iris panels per card. The Iris panel also offers fully user-configurable color OLED displays, providing the user label, tally, and port information. EHX Supervisor Mode real-time control allows label updates and monitoring on the fly.

Production teams can take advantage of the system’s flexibility by combining V-Series Iris panels and multiple E-IPA cards: for example, a large sporting event might use a single frame with many wireless/panel connections on the same intercom network to cover an entire stadium, or megachurches may create multi-region intercom networks via LAN, WAN, or the internet to help broadcast services to churches around the world.

The V-series Iris panel is optimized for use with EHX 11.0 software to fully implement its AES67 connectivity, real-time control, and color tallies; it also has I.V. Core IP and four-wire connections for backward compatibility with Eclipse frames running EHX 10.0 or earlier.

Crestron DM NVX Encoders/Decoders with POE+ or Dante

The What: Crestron debuted additions to its DigitalMedia product family at ISE 2019. The new products include the DM-NVX-E30(C) encoder and DM-NVX-D30(C) decoder, both with POE+ support, as well as the DM-NVX-351(C) encoder/decoder with built-in DSP for Downmix and the DM-NVX-352(C) encoder/decoder with Dante Audio.

The What Else: The E30(C) D30(C) are encode- or decodeonly units that support HDMI connectivity and analog audio. Compatible with all other DM NVX products, they deliver flexibility for basic endpoints when only video and audio are needed. The E30(C) delivers high-quality video with new Pixel Perfect Processing, support for high-quality formats (4K/60p, 4:4:4, HDR), PoE+ support, a fan that can be switched off when not in use, and the use of standard switches and Cat 5e cabling.

With the new 352(C), the DM NVX product line bridges the digital audio and video worlds. The 352(C) offers the same feature set as the 350(C), while eliminating the need for complex third-party analog audio devices that receive or transmit AES67 or Dante audio. The 352(C) connects to analog audio input/output ports on DigitalMedia devices.

The Bottom Line: Crestron’s DM NVX encoders/decoders with POE+ support and DM NVX encoders/decoders with Dante audio networking provide integrators and end users with additional system design flexibility and functionality.

The What: Shure has begun shipping its Microflex Complete Wireless (MXCW) Conferencing System.

The What Else: The wireless conferencing units—which include a microphone, loudspeaker, interpretation audio, controls, and touchscreen—overcome cable restrictions for use in rooms that require adaptable seating, or in historic settings where permanent installation (like tabletop drilling) is not an option. Of note, most government entities have rooms that are multipurpose or multifunctional. Flexible seating—and a corresponding scalable conferencing system—is a must.

Additionally, the system’s lack of visible wiring meets today’s expectations for sleek, clean setup. It also encourages natural interactions between participants who are no longer held back by cables; instead, they can move and communicate without restraint.

Because a wired connection is not needed, IT managers and AV professionals can set up and configure the system in minutes, according to Shure. If a last-minute meeting is scheduled, users can pull out the system and configure it quickly. Further, Automatic Gain Control technology and proprietary audio codecs help ensure that MXCW delivers intelligible audio and consistent speech levels for all participants.

Microflex Complete Wireless leverages the power of Shure’s frequency management technology to eliminate time-consuming frequency adjustments and interruptions. Additionally, MXCW is supported by Shure’s Interference Detection and Avoidance technology for reliable transmission even in the most congested RF environments.

Coupled with AES-128 audio encryption for enhanced privacy and a single access point, integrators and AV professionals have real-time control over the entire wireless coverage area.

The Bottom Line: A premier solution in Shure’s conferencing portfolio, MXCW is designed to provide wireless freedom and flexibility for conferences, meetings, and events in government, corporate, hotel, and educational facilities. Well suited for environments that need quick setup and breakdown, the all-in-one conferencing solution offers high-quality audio, security, and ease of use.

The What: Biamp’s Crowd Mics system transforms smartphones and tablets into a personal microphone and interactive response system, creating a streamlined experience for event attendees and moderators alike.

The What Else: Designed for presentations, lectures, panel discussions, and other presenter/audience events, Crowd Mics is hosted on a small hardware appliance, the ATOM, that supports up to 1,000 event participants. ATOM connects directly to the room’s audio system via USB or balanced audio outputs, includes the option to present video via HDMI, and provides moderators full access to the event’s participation log, including questions asked and poll results.

Audience members connect to ATOM using a free iOS or Android app installed on their phone or tablet. The app lets event participants use their smartphones as personal wireless microphones and gives access to standard audience engagement tools like polls and messaging. The separate Crowd Mics moderator application allows a presenter or moderator to select who will speak next, create and publish polls, and select audience text comments to be pushed to the room’s AV presentation system.

Crowd Mics can be managed through Biamp’s SageVue 2.0 browserbased monitoring and management platform.

The Bottom Line: Biamp expects Crowd Mics to be available in the second quarter of 2019.

Eiki International TRT LED Displays

The What: Eiki International is now distributing TRT LED displays as part of its comprehensive range of projection and signage solutions.

Suitable for hanging, wall-mounting, base-standing, bracket-standing, and other creative installations, the new TRT LED display panels are well suited for use at convention centers, shopping malls, meeting rooms, airports, gas stations, supermarkets, and clubs/restaurants, as well as command and control centers.

The What Else: Used individually or as part of a multiscreen cascade, the TRT LedPoster screen provides a powerful visual experience. With a 2880 Hz refresh rate and 1,200 nits brightness, the TRT LedPoster provides a 160-degree viewing angle both vertically and horizontally, resulting in more realistic color reproduction. Each TRT LedPoster has a screen size of approximately 1900 mm x 600 mm (74.8 x 23.6 inches) and is viewable from a distance of 65 feet.

The Bottom Line: Available in two models—P 2.5 and P 1.9—the TRT LedPoster displays carry a respective dot pitch of 2.5 mm and 1.944 mm. The display depth is 35 mm (1.3 inches) with an edge of 6 mm (0.24 inches). The frame size is 572 mm x 1902 mm (22.5 inches wide x 74.8 inches high).

Additionally, each LED display frame has an integrated autoclosing inclined bracket, making setup for trade shows and other temporary display situations quick and easy.

Audio-Technica ES954 Hanging Microphone Array

The What: Audio-Technica has begun shipping the ES954 Hanging Microphone Array, which is designed for huddle rooms, conference rooms, and other meeting spaces.

The What Else: When controlled by the Audio-Technica ATDM-0604 Digital SmartMixer, the four-capsule microphone array provides 360-degree coverage through virtual hypercardioid or cardioid outputs that can be steered horizontally and tilted vertically. The ATDM-0604’s graphic interface enables control of the width and orientation of each virtual polar pattern, which may be steered in 30-degree increments, with a tilt function accommodating differing ceiling heights or users who are sitting or standing.

The ES954 Hanging Microphone Array features a permanently attached 4-foot cable with locking grommet that enables easy microphone height adjustment. UniGuard RFI-shielding technology offers rejection of radio frequency interference. The package includes a Plenum-rated AT8554 Ceiling Mount with RJ45 connectors and pushtype wire terminals for simple, secure installation. The ES954 connects to the mixer over a pair of shielded standard Cat 5 cables. Two RJ45 breakout cables are provided to input the four channels, plus an LED conductor, into the mixer. An integral, logic-controlled 360-degree red/green LED ring provides clear indication of the array’s mute status.

Alternative seating arrangements in the room can be accommodated by reorienting each of the four microphone patterns in the mixer’s software. Different seating configurations and associated coverage patterns can be saved as presets in the mixer for quick recall. In larger rooms, multiple ES954 microphone arrays could be installed—for instance, one at each end of a long conference table—and the polar patterns of the multiple microphone arrays steered and widened or narrowed accordingly.

The Bottom Line: Intended primarily for videoconferencing applications, the ES954 may be used singly or in multiples to capture every person speaking in a room, with the total number of channels restricted only by the capacity of the mixer or DSP device controlling the system.

tvONE Updates CORIOmaster Video Wall Processors

The What: Christie’s new MicroTiles LED displays are smaller, brighter, more powerful, and more flexible than their predecessors. Delivering P3 color space, HDR10 compatibility, and software that keeps the wall calibrated at 97 percent or greater uniformity, Christie MicroTiles LED are suitable for broadcast sets, corporation venues, museums, retail environments, stadiums, arenas, and higher education applications. The system includes a low profile, ADA-compliant QuickMount system that allows displays to be created in any shape and size, including 90-degree inside/outside corners and both concave and convex curves.

The What Else: System capabilities include 12-bit input sources, 4K at 120 Hz, HDR10 compliance, integrated image processing, and scaling and simple switching The QuickMount system eliminates alignment challenges typically associated with installing LEDs by using precisely-machined mounting sheets and wall anchors that can be easily installed onto nearly any surface. Once the laser cut sheet is mounted, the small size and low weight of the cabinet-free tiles reduces installation complexity while saving space and increasing flexibility. A single PoE Cat 6 Ethernet cable is all that is required to connect each module to the entire display for a clean and simple cabling solution, dramatically reducing points of failure of typical LED cabinet design. With the click-n-go magnetic tiles, populating the display with LED tiles is incredibly fast.

The Bottom Line: Christie MicroTiles LED comes with a threeyear parts and labor warranty, which is extendable to five years, and ships in late spring 2019.

The What: tvONE is now shipping enhancements to its CORIOmaster (4RU), CORIOmaster mini (1RU), and CORIOmaster micro (1/2 RU) video wall processors.

The What Else: The enhancements include a secure communication suite with full REST API and multi-user control. Other improvements include an HDMI four-port output module (CM -HDMI -SC- 4OU T ), audio support for the CORIOmaster and CORIOmaster mini for embedded audio, and a dedicated audio module (CM-AUD-2IN-4OUT).

Secure communication allows system installation to be compatible with all secure network infrastructure environments. The HDMI fourport output upgrades the C3-540 CORIOmaster to up to 56 outputs, making massive video walls, projector edge blends, and LED installations easy to configure. The embedded audio support and new audio module improve CORIOmaster performance for both video and audio in an installation. The IP streaming module now accepts both H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) for higher quality and increased bandwidth performance; the module also includes an ultra-low-latency mode.

The Bottom Line: The CORIOmaster range of products can manage up to four canvases to support multiple video walls, while also performing other video tasks simultaneously, including audio, real-time 360 video rotations, multi-image processing, and rotation and edge blending.

Symetrix Composer 7.1

Modulo Pi Modulo Kinetic

The What: Symetrix used its appearance at ISE to debut a new version of Composer, its configuration software for Radius NX, Edge, Radius, Prism, and Solus NX DSPs. Composer 7.1 for Windows adds support for the Visionary Solutions PacketAV Duet video encoder and decoder, Symetrix T-5 Touchscreen controllers, and PD-1 Telco Dialer. A host of other software improvements makes system design and management more flexible.

The What Else: All programming and routing of Visionary Solutions PacketAV Duet video encoders and decoders is now directly integrated within Composer 7.1. In addition, Composer indirectly supports select third-party non-Dante encoders/decoders that use the same control protocol as the Duets.

Like Symetrix ARC controllers, the T-5 Touchscreen can control every user-facing function of an installed AV system using Symetrix’s SymVue interface. As with Symetrix DSPs, integrators can now manage any T-5 Touchscreen from Composer, as each device has its own IP address on the network.

Composer 7.1 also supports the PD-1 Telco Dialer, which lets meeting leaders dial remote attendees into conference calls using a traditional telephone keypad rather than a touchscreen.

Composer 7.1 adds several workflow enhancements. Time/date and special character export in the SymVue for Web interface is now present. New sizing handles (horizontal, vertical, and a corner handle for sizing the entire window at once) allow resizing of objects in control screens on the fly. This and expanded design sheet sizes make it easier to optimize installed systems for different remote-control scenarios, including T-5 Touchscreens, smartphones, and tablets.

The Bottom Line: All of the above features add up to an expanded universe of use cases for Symetrix networked AV systems and let the installer scale systems to meet clients’ needs quickly and efficiently.

The What: Modulo Pi has released a new version of Modulo Kinetic, a fully integrated real-time media server that can be used across the complete workflow, including show study, simulation, encoding, playback, and show control.

The What Else: Modulo Kinetic features a user-friendly 2D compositing tool with nonlinear timelines, a low-latency live mixer, and a powerful 3D engine and show controller, all brought into one consistent environment. It handles advanced formats including Apple ProRes, HAP up to 8K+, and uncompressed still sequence TGA or 10-bit DPX. To optimize performance and usability, Modulo Pi has developed its own tracking system. Available in Modulo Kinetic’s new version, the optical tracking module allows real-time projection on moving objects, as well as video projector auto-calibration.

Modulo Kinetic is compatible with other tracking and motion control solutions such as BlackTrax and Kinesys.

A powerful 3D particle engine offers real-time generative and interactive content. Particles can be created directly in Modulo Kinetic’s user interface. A nodal panel allows drag-and-drop of devices and sensors, connecting them with timelines or 3D scenes to perform real-time tracking or interactive video effects.

The Bottom Line: Through Modulo Kinetic’s intuitive and collaborative user interface, users can simulate and visualize a show in 3D. Modulo Kinetic’s new version makes real-time VR easy for improved show study and simulation: one single button in Modulo Kinetic’s software allows users to visualize a show scene from any angle with a VR headset. No coding is needed to enjoy all the benefits of Modulo Kinetic’s real-time interactive VR. Modulo Kinetic is available in a regular chassis, and a new ruggedized framework. The reinforced suspended frame and professional connectivity is designed to endure rough conditions.

ne of the most difficult decisions small business owners have to make is deciding when to sell—or not sell—their businesses. It may be one of the most important decisions you will ever make in your life. Like many small business owners in the AV industry, I have received numerous calls through the years from a variety of investment bankers, private equity firms, and others who had interest in my business.

Truthfully, I ignored 95 percent of the calls that came in for a variety of reasons that included: 1. The potential investor did not fully understand the value of my business.

2. I was too busy growing my business to worry about selling it.

3. The timing wasn’t right for me, either personally or professionally (or both).

I’m not sure about other owners, but the very thought of selling my business conjured up so many emotions. I had put my heart and soul into starting and growing the business, and I simply wasn’t willing to consider letting it go. I also had to admit, I didn’t trust many of the people making the calls. They all seem to have the same approach, which was too slick, too pushy, and, at the end of the day, most of them didn’t have a clue about AV integration firms. It was a potential investment for them—pure and simple.

And that wasn’t good enough for me. As I told my employees many times, I didn’t start my business focusing on money, and I wasn’t going to let it go for the same reason. I started my business for the satisfaction of building something I could be proud of.

But then I got the call. It was from one of those same investment guys I’ve been dodging for years, yet somehow this one seemed different. After just a few minutes of conversation, it was clear to me that the individual calling already knew a lot about me, my company, my clients, and—most importantly—the AV industry. He established credibility early on. And then he mentioned the company that was interested in buying my business. It wasn’t just any company ... it was/is an industry giant. That got my attention!

The only problem was that they wanted to meet me at InfoComm 2018 to discuss their interest, answer questions, etc., and I hadn’t planned on making the trip to Las Vegas. But I did mention that my son would be there and that he would be happy to meet with them.

I also explained that I had no intention of selling my business, and if the discussion were to go anywhere, it had to include a high-level leadership role for my son because I had previously committed to transitioning him to the role of CEO in January 2019. My son and I had put in a lot of effort and spent thousands of dollars in legal fees to set up the succession plan, timing, finances, etc.

I was fully convinced that when my son met with the company, he would have a negative reaction and we would move on. Boy, was I surprised! He not only spoke highly of the company, but he noted that our companies were closely aligned with go-to market

strategies, company cultures, etc. And I had to admit, that it all sounded pretty good to me.

So what happened next? As you can imagine, there were dozens of meetings between the two companies to discuss next steps, needed information, etc. In other words, they needed to do their due diligence prior to making me an offer. The due diligence process analyzes anything and everything about your business, whether it be vendor agreements, customer contracts, licenses, or legal documents. I have to say that retrieving such a large amount of information— extremely sensitive information—made for the most stressful five months of my career. Every day we needed to submit more and more information, and yet we still had a business to run. Not an easy task.

We finally got to the point where an offer was made. And even then I wasn’t sure. I loved being an entrepreneur and wasn’t certain I could really let

go. But after thinking through it all, it came down to addressing three main issues. First, the offer had to be reasonable for me and my family, which included my son’s promotion to a leadership role. Second, I had to make sure my employees would be taken care of with things like benefits and career opportunities.

Finally, we had look out for our current customers and ensure they would receive better pricing and support. Once those issues were addressed, it made sense to move forward. It truly was a WIN, WIN, WIN proposition.

On a personal note, I walked my one—and only— daughter down the aisle on Oct. 27 and closed on the sale of my business on Oct. 3. I had to let go of both of my babies in less than a week—an emotional four days for sure!
