Broadcast Pix RadioPix Version 8
GUI for the StreamBlade stream processor
Wheatstone Wheatstream
4
Wheatstone says airchain processors are the worst for audio streams because they trick the codec into mistaking artifacts for audio. Noise, hum, large phase errors, clipping distortion byproducts and non-audio signals may even be made worse. Wheatstone designed the StreamBlade AoIP appliance for WheatNet-IP network users, and recently introduced Wheatstream for adding on to any existing AoIP network. These Linux and AoIP appliances can stream as many as eight stream instances. In addition to codecs and advanced metadata capability, they include processing that optimizes performance of encoded audio while maintaining uniform levels, spectral balance and absolute peak control. The AGC and multiband compression sections are codecfriendly, anticipating overshoots earlier to avoid thick program density that can cause issues with the codec. Fiveband AGC eliminates aggressive RMS attack times that can interfere with performance. A Predictive Dynamics Controller utilizes Neural Network techniques to manage each band’s gain naturally. Algorithms use current and historical data to steer the processing to what is needed at that instant. For the occasional peak over the recommended input level of –3 dBFS for most codecs, the appliances rely on dual-band limiting rather than clipping, which can create harmonics that the codec reappropriates as distortion. Final limiting occurs in two bands, above and below 180 Hz, helpful when balancing perceived quality/loudness against finite bitstreams. For low-bitrate streams especially, this means being able to selectively remove lows in the stereo difference channel, leaving more bits for encoding frequencies that are more perceptible. 2wcom MoIN Server Software Update
8
2wcom said its MoIN multimedia over IP network server software is now available as MoIN Studio, MoIN Distribution (shown) and MoIN streaming versions. The three variants are available singly or in combination, depending on the customer’s needs. The solutions connect all sites of a network and can transcode multiple audio channels simultaneously. Systems can run on hardware boxes, VM, in the cloud or on-premises. MoIN Studio supports studio stream formats like AES67, EBU Tech 3326, Dante, Ravenna, SMPTE 2110, Livewire+ and WheatNet. The integrated SIP phonebook and the Easy2connect feature enable regional studios to manage their content in a WAN. Remote teams can retrieve pre-produced content and comment on it, or forward contributions like podcasts to the main studio. MoIN Distribution is easy to adapt to any studio environment and compatible with third-party solutions. The solution can receive up to 512 channels and transcode them to ingest distribution sources, such as DAB+, audio over IP, satellite, a CDN or cable networks. Also the software is capable of receiving phase-locked multichannel audio in an AES67 stream and encode it for distribution. To ensure scalability and reliability the software consists of containers that run separately and isolated. MoIN Streaming provides web radio services with fulltime reliability. It enables transcoding to a multi-bitrate HLS stream or a single-bitrate Icecast stream to feed a CDN directly without delay. MoIN Streaming features an HLS decoder. For example, this allows the receiving of HLS streams and re-encode them to DVB-TS, or just receiving them for monitoring. Info: www.2wcom.com

Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone
Nautel, Telos Explore CloudBased Air Chain
12
Nautel and Telos Alliance say it is possible to move the entire HD Radio air chain into a virtual environment; they recently offered a “concept demonstration,” showing what they described as the world’s first cloud-based, time-locked FM+HD Radio air chain. The demo included two “failover” events to show that program continuity can be maintained in the case of a problem. The companies say the project anticipates easier and more flexible digital radio deployments via virtualized audio processing and software-based Gen4 HD Radio importer/ exporters. The companies said cloud operation is well established in business and that the pandemic has increased interest in virtualization techniques. Earlier the companies demonstrated a way to eliminate time alignment drift by locking FM and HD1 signals using software-implemented audio processing and a Nautel Gen4 HD MultiCast+. The later demo, they said, built on that, showing how this time-locked air-chain “could be hosted in the cloud, utilizing the Telos Alliance Omnia Enterprise 9s high-density audio processor, a software-based Gen4 Importer/Exporter, and Nautel technology all running on the Amazon Web Services platform.” Info: www.nautel.com/resources/webinars
For podcasters, streamers and vocalists, professionallevel audio production is paramount. To answer the increasing demand for audio streaming and recording solutions, Shure says it created the MV7 Podcast Microphone, its first hybrid XLR/USB microphone. Suitable for both entry-level and experienced creators, the MV7’s design makes it user-friendly and simple to set up and control. The company highlights its Voice Isolation Technology to help take podcasts or live streams to the next level. In any environment the microphone’s pickup pattern focuses on the vocals by bringing it to the forefront of the recording, for perfect recordings in imperfect rooms, Shure says. A user’s vocal level and mic position are always fluctuating. Auto Level Mode acts as a virtual audio engineer and sets gains in real time, giving audiences a more consistent experience. This enables creators to focus on the content, not on their mic technique. Creators can further optimize their sound with presets for dark, natural or bright, and options for mic distance for near or far. “This year, we’ve witnessed a significant uptick in the demand for tools and accessories that support live streaming and podcasting — especially as many continue to broadcast their talents from home,” said Soren Pedersen, associate manager, Global Product Management, at Shure. He said Shure “designed the MV7 to be laser-focused on the user’s voice.” Info: www.shure.com

Off-air events, PPM loss and other key business parameters are evaluated in specified time windows. Accumulated run-time measurements on equipment such as main and aux transmitters, generators, UPS systems and dehydrators create a narrative of station operations and provide early indication of potential equipment failures. Variations in performance metrics like transmitter efficiency, heat rise or line pressure identify issues that can be addressed during scheduled maintenance avoiding costly emergency site visits. Expanding the Rohde & Schwarz commitment to HD Radio, last year the company introduced HDSync to the R&S HDR900 exporter/importer for the THR9 transmitters. In HD Radio hybrid mode, the analog and digital signal (HD1) simulcasts typically originate from the same source but take different paths to the transmitter. The digital part needs to be encoded and processed, introducing a delay of several seconds, before the signal is routed as an E2X stream via Exgine to the exciter. To synchronize the analog signal and the digital signal at transmission, the analog must be delayed by exactly the value of coding/ processing delay. The delay itself can develop problems as the analog and digital pathways can change. Previously, this required costly third-party devices that measured delay and adjusted, with varying degrees of success, the delay to keep audio synchronized. With the HDSync feature in the R&S HDR900 exporter, it is possible without additional equipment to keep the analog and digital signals synchronized. A built-in receiver measures the current delay off-air between analog and digital signal and eliminates any delay difference using a sophisticated correlation algorithm allowing an extreme accuracy meeting/exceeding the specification NRSC-5-C of ±3 samples. HDSync added to the R&S HDR900 exporter allows broadcasters to keep their hybrid HD Radio signal automatically synchronized. The measurement/delay correction is performed automatically in the shortest possible time without compromising the listening experience, the company says. The built-in web interface provides quick setup, detailed status, logging and multilevel configurable alarms. It can be operated via SNMP and is compatible with other HD Radio exciters. The R&S HDR900 exporter/importer is an all-in-one solution able to multiplex up to four HD programs/services into a digital stream to the HD Radio transmitter in which HDSync completes the package. DAC System RF-Hawkeye
JT Communications SEPsoniX Processor
DAC System announced a new product to monitor transmission lines and antennas called RF-Hawkeye. It provides real-time measurements able to quantify and precisely localize VSWR/RL degradation points and arcs events while the antenna is broadcasting. It detects, locates and warns about VSWR changes and/or presence of arcs in transmitting radio and TV antennas. The system is based on an ultrawide-band radar, whose signal is injected into the transmission line on a frequency range that does not conflict with the transmitted channels. Traveling along the line, the radar will meet all the physical discontinuities in the line — possibly due to the joints between the original line sections. It will show anomalous discontinuities due to damages to the line along with active arcing. It identifies the exact location of a degradation point/ arc presence with a ±20-centimeter accuracy on the full distance and temperature range and for a mix of rigid lines and cables. The company says this is the first and only transmission system monitoring solution that alerts users of small VSWR anomalies before they can deteriorate and cause damage. RF-Hawkeye installs quickly and can be applied to pylon antennas, popular in the U.S., and to panel antennas, typical in Europe and Asia. The antenna can be FM, VHF or UHF, digital and analog signals. The system allows antenna owners to proactively look after their network preventing potential catastrophic events and expensive downtimes. It allows cost savings from the maintenance point of view and it protects equipment investment. The company says the RF-Hawkeye system has been installed in the U.S. and in Europe with excellent results in terms of antenna maintenance. Info: www.dacsystem.ch
Most high-dollar processing that broadcasters utilize, says JT Communications, suffers the effects of latency, which can be a significant challenge for live-talent attempting to monitor the processed audio directly off the air. This forces the station to add a separate sidechain just for monitoring purposes. The SEPsoniX FM broadcast processor offers a latencyfree design. It provides two bands of processing, with processing-derived AGC control. Band-dependent gain “freeze” eliminates pumping and breathing of audio.
Features include independent left and right highfrequency pre-emphasis limiting; ultrastable PWM gain control for all compression and limiting stages; active audio filtering (30 Hz high-pass, 15 kHz low-pass, 19 kHz notch); and single-stage active phase rotator for audio symmetry. A stereo generator with adjustable composite processing is provided, as is a post-processing output for streaming applications. A frequency-agile FM signal generator for local monitoring of signal is optional. SEPsoniX can be used as a main processor, or if utilizing the a sidechain processor, when using the optional FM signal generator option. Simultaneously, SEPsoniX can also provide a feed to a dedicated streaming service. The SEPsoniX base price lists at $1,095, or with FM signal generator option at $1,295. Sample demos and live streaming audio are available at the website. Info: www.sepsonix.com

RCS has made available an online tutorial video that helps users take advantage of Zetta Splits. “Think of Zetta Splits as one main content source that is duplicated amongst other export destinations, except there are queues or triggers from the Split Master that allows the Split station to break away, play their own content and then return to the main content source,” the company states on its website. “What elements can break away? Really anything as defined by the Splits Master. This could trigger local Spot Blocks, imaging, songs, etc. In regards to vocabulary, there are many different ways users define these aspects of Zetta Split relationships. We consider the primary source as the Splits Master versus a traditional Split. Some users might consider this network and affiliate, parent and child, etc.” The video by Director of Sales Engineering Nate Mumford presents real-life examples, including having one centralized morning show or a sporting event that requires an alternate type of programming for the internet stream. MaxxKonnect Wireless Service 28
This prioritized LTE internet solution is designed to accommodate the unique needs of broadcasters, according to MaxxKonnect. Each SIM includes a true public static IP address. This, for instance, allows the studio router for a codec system to white-list the MaxxKonnect IP addresses, restricting other traffic from accessing those codec ports, keeping out hackers and bots. MaxxKonnect also does not block ports on its SIMs and will not throttle or hard cap users data connections. Data plans are available on the three U.S. major carriers and start as low as $44 a month. The service also is now available in Canada and Mexico. It is compatible with off-the-shelf LTE hardware devices, including modems from major codec makers. The company can also provide preprogrammed hardware devices, which makes setup a nonissue. Based on user feedback, a full-service user portal is being added so that MaxxKonnect customers will be able to monitor data consumption and receive data cap alerts. Info: www.maxxkonnect.com

Henry Engineering BackUPS Power Switcher
WorldCast Systems SynchroStream Technology WorldCast Systems has launched its SynchroStream technology for the APT codec range with the release of SR 4.0. The company states that with the release of SynchroStream they will become the only manufacturer to offer a one-stop shop for single-frequency network deployment with the transport (APT codecs), transmission (Ecreso transmitter), measurement (Audemat FMMC5) and monitoring (Kybio Software) available from WorldCast. The SynchroStream technology and the support legs approach benefits the broadcaster in simplifying the setup, configuration and maintenance of a solid and stable SFN network. SynchroStream is compatible with baseband audio coding and the existing MPX/composite linear coding schemes and also the new APTmpX algorithm, “the first nondestructive MPX/composite algorithm,” also part of the new SR 4.0. SynchroStream is supplied on the existing APT IP Codec range and utilizes an externally supplied 10 MHz clock and the 1 pps GPS signal as time reference. The company says beta network deployments in New Zealand and the United States have verified bench test results which calculated that the granularity offered in allowing fixed line adjustments down to an eighth of a microsecond (125 nanoseconds) would allow the highly accurate (<50 meters) manipulation of the “mush zone.” According to WorldCast, in the real world this means engineers can push the almost nonexistent mush zone away from populated areas or transport corridors. This manipulation translates to better coverage within the SFN FM area, consisting of main FM transmitter and FM boosters, meaning potentially more listeners for a station. Info: www.worldcastsystems.com
Henry Engineering’s BackUPS is a power controller for ensuring reliable AC power to critical equipment. It is powered with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). BackUPS constantly monitors the output of the UPS and automatically bypasses it if the output fails or becomes unstable. This keeps the load powered and allows the UPS to be disconnected for battery replacement or other maintenance. A restart-delay timer ensures the output is stable before the UPS is switched back online. Whenever the output comes on, the system monitors its output for a preset period. The UPS will be switched online only if the output is stable during this delay interval, which can be set from 10 seconds to 16 minutes and can be defeated if not needed. BackUPS is automatic once installed. The mode switch can select manual UPS bypass mode, or automatic operation with or without restart-delay. It can be monitored and controlled remotely. The remote bypass input allows the unit to “force bypass” a troublesome UPS via GPI control. BackUPS can also be used to reset and reboot equipment via off/on power cycling. It can supply up to 15 amps of AC current to the load. BackUPS can also be used as a “remote reboot” device, to reset and reboot equipment via off/on power cycling. It can supply up to 15 amps of AC current to the load. Info: https://henryeng.com/
