DIGITAL NIRVANA INC.

Metadator With changes in the media industry becoming a norm, being data driven is now a necessity. Leveraging data to make better business decisions is imperative, but to be a data-driven company amongst all the data that’s available in so many different systems and forms could be pretty arduous, especially for content owners, post-production houses, broadcasters and other media organizations. Data environments in any big organization would be of no use unless the information could be pieced together, and metadata helps doing that by binding the data and aligning its sources for better understanding.

Quality metadata helps the facilitation of discovery, management, access and use of data resources. To ensure secure metadata generation and to better address the requirements of growing media facilities, Digital Nirvana introduces its software application Metadator that makes content-based metadata generation efficient for broadcasters and content owners using the

6

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

Avid media platform. Metadator application, installed at the customers premises, interacts with Avid to extract media, create a low-res version and securely transfer it to generate various types of metadata. Based on customer requirements, Metadator has the option to extract audio-only from the video assets and transfer it outside the customer’s premises. This is done to address data security for highly secure assets that still needs speech content-based metadata or transcripts. The audio/low-res video data is securely transferred to Digital Nirvana’s cloud-based platform over HTTPS for processing, based on customer requirements, whether it be automatic speech-to-text conversion, creation of high-quality transcripts, video description, content context, etc. The data is generated with locators or timestamps to make content retrieval easy within the Avid platform. Once generated, Metadator fetches the metadata created, automatically ingests it back into the Avid Interplay, and creates a searchable database within the Avid MAM infrastructure. Automating what has been a manual process of combing through large amounts of footage for retrieval of specific footage or create scene summaries for a live project streamlines editing and eases the process of closed captioning and subtitling. Managing the job flow and monitoring status is also made easy with Metadator’s monitoring and alerting system, which is integrated within the application. When combined with Digital Nirvana’s metadata, video logging services and closed-captioning solutions, it helps meet client-specific requests including shot description, video summary, closed-caption generation, dialog transcripts, etc., improving turnaround time while reducing costs. The application represents a complete, workable end-to-end solution that can improve overall operational efficiency and provides multiple benefits in an increasing metatdata-centric media world. digital-nirvana.com/campaign/metadator

EDITSHARE

XStream EFS Auditing On the heels of high-profile hacks (Sony Pictures, HBO, Netflix), industry organizations have outlined new security best practices for content suppliers, affecting the technology used to store high-value content. EditShare is pioneering storage security, meeting media and entertainment best practice requirements with its EditShare XStream EFS Auditing dashboard. The first purpose-built shared storage file auditing solution for the M&E industry, the new EFS Auditing dashboard product provides comprehensive auditing on the lifecycle of a file from its inception to its delivery stage. EFS Auditing reports in real time of all file system activity, including file creation, deletion, modification, opens and reads as well as general media space access.

exclusively for the M&E market. The new EditShare product, which began shipping September 2018, provides comprehensive auditing and reporting of all file system activity, including file creation, deletion, modification, opens and reads as well as general media space access. The functionality is designed to deter would-be thieves as they will be caught. EFS Auditing tracks content at the storage source, providing full accountability for digital assets and peace of mind for EditShare customers and their clients. The unique intuitive XStream EFS Auditing Dashboard provides administrators a high-level view of activity as the ability to drill down to individual users and files. Previously, any (non-M&E designed) system that featured file auditing ca-

Various layers of protection have been adopted in the M&E space. Application servers, media processing systems, asset management systems and media storage are typically protected from external threats by firewall solutions. LDAP-based User permissions and network policy management systems like Active Directory are being deployed to implement “least permissions” access to critical assets. Encryption and watermarking technologies have been leveraged to prevent or detect piracy or other misuses of media assets. While many of the current security layers focus on blocking physical, internal and external access to critical media access, File Auditing solutions focus on answering “Who did What to Which files, When and Where did they do it?” This capability can enable facility managers to determine the cause of unexpected file changes, for example. The challenge was that until EditShare XStream EFS File Auditing, there were no purpose-built shared storage solutions designed for the M&E space that had auditing technology. In September 2017, EditShare announced the EFS XStream Auditing, the industry’s first shared storage solution with purpose-built auditing designed

pabilities required trained technicians to read and interpret file log data, creating bottlenecks and preventing rapid industry-wide adoption of this critical security practice. With XStream EFS, administrators can analyze which users carried out which action, to what file or directory, and when it took place all in real time. The XStream EFS Auditing Dashboard records audit events that satisfy the analysis criteria and displays them in a visual, easy-to-understand bar graph format with accompanying verbose analysis, which details each event and the complete set of associated audit event attributes. In addition, users are able to describe and find audit events of interest via a full text search bar (ex., search “elephants” and all audit events surrounding files with “elephants” in its title will appear), and/or searching a timestamp range. The dashboard also provides an at-a-glance summary of where the most user activity has occurred. This enables non-technical staff in the facility to easily use, understand and analyze log file data, making widespread industry adoption of this important security measure a real possibility in the very near future.

EMBRIONIX

Embrionix emSFP All-IP UHD Down Converter bandwidth (up to 10 Gbps for one ST2110 4K stream) that could jeopardize the network when sent to a multiviewer for down conversion/displaying.

This miniaturized software-defined UHD down converter saves bandwidth, energy and reduces costs by removing the down converting function from the multiviewer and bringing it within the COTS IP switch. THE NEED The need to keep costs and footprint low is paramount as broadcasters embrace a media-over-IP landscape and the inevitable virtualization of broadcast functions. Virtualization in an allIP environment will benefit broadcasters by allowing them to leverage COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) solutions and adapt IT equipment with simple, space-optimizing plug-ins that can be repurposed, rather than investing in expensive, custom-made solutions. CONTEXT Broadcasters are already choosing COTS IP switches to replace routers and distribution amplifiers. They are also using servers to run processing-heavy, software-based multiviewers to downconvert/display the video in multiple windows on a single 3G/SD/HD monitor for applications like signal monitoring and virtual reality. This processing consumes considerable bandwidth and energy. ENTER 4K UHD The advent of 4K UHD video over IP makes down converting prior to sending across the network critical as 4K UHD streams require enormous

8

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

SOLUTION The solution is the Embrionix Miniaturized emSFP All-IP UHD Down Converter. This Embrionix software-defined miniaturized down converter saves bandwidth, energy, and reduces costs by removing the scaling function from the multiviewer and bringing it within the COTS IP switch. The tiny down converter creates broadcast-quality proxies of 4K UHD at the ingest of the 4K UHD signal. A repurposed-down version of the 4K UHD (or 8K, ...) signal is then sent to the multiviewer for display.

• • • •

BENEFITS Save on bandwidth, space Efficient use of the IP system Repurpose existing equipment Pristine image quality: A high-quality filter offers pristine video images configurable to the preferred resolution (SD/HD/3G)

EXAMPLE: Sending full 4K to a multiviewer equipped with 100GE connection consumes approximately 10 percent of available bandwidth and permits about 10 viewing/display windows on the monitor. Prescaling with the emSFP enables the multiviewer to display approximately 10 x more windows. www.embrionix.com

ENCO SYSTEMS

enCaption4 Live Automated Captioning enCaption4 is a patented, totally automated appliance or cloud solution that can automatically generate captioning on video. Content creators and broadcasters can provide real-time, live captioning to their hearing-impaired audience any time, without advance notice and without the high costs of live captioners or signers. In addition to the constantly improving accuracy and speed— a result of our neural network approach— the 2018 release of enCaption4 adds powerful offline and batch processing, Mic Check speaker recognition and compatibility with NDI® infrastructures. ENCO’s software-defined enCaption solutions provide accurate closed captioning for both live and pre-recorded content in near real time, helping broadcasters and content producers easily and cost-effectively comply with expanding regulatory requirements. With clips generation and OTT media at the forefront of modern broadcasting, it has never been more important to have a proven solution to quickly and accurately generate captions before sharing your content online. enCaption’s evolved speech-to-text engine speeds through pre-recorded clips at up to 5x real time, so you can keep your online feed relevant and accessible to your hearing-impaired audience. enCaption4 similarly improves end-to-end live captioning latency, cutting in half the time between spoken words and their corresponding on-screen caption representation. Generating captions in live, real-time environments faster than human stenographers, the solution improves the viewing experience for hearing-impaired audiences with much closer synchronization between captions and actual speech. In the past, a fast exchange between multiple personalities would cause mistakes in the captioning process— automated or human alike. Realizing the need for a better solution, ENCO developed Mic Check, a companion application that runs alongside the latest version of enCaption, instantly identifying a change of speaker and keeping the captions neatly organized by speaker name. In order to improve accuracy even further, enCaption now ships with enhanced noise-reduction technology, which reduces background noise without the warbling distortion typically found in denoisers, allowing the speech

9

MEDIAKIND

PRISMA Advertising and Content Rights Solution Consumers are constantly seeking the best possible viewing experiences, while simultaneously, broadcasters are continually trying to enhance revenue from premium TV video inventory. Linear and dynamic ad insertion (DAI) can greatly improve the relevancy and value of advertising for both groups, leading to a much better and more enjoyable overall experience.

However, advertising is just one part of a clear emerging trend across the industry, in which broadcasters seek to better control which content is delivered to viewers based on geographical, device restrictions or local window programming. This control extends their own or their partner’s distribution network and the growing range of over-the-top (OTT) services that are often under-monetized. Recognizing this untapped potential, broadcasters are increasingly identifying ad breaks to anticipate downstream replacement. Emerging technologies including frame accurate start-over can, when coupled with DAI, provide broadcasters with additional inventory possibilities, in addition to ad replacement of existing ad breaks. MediaKind PRISMA is an advertising and content rights solution developed to overcome these specific challenges and answer broadcasters’ needs. PRISMA gives both TV service providers and broadcasters access to real-time broadcast schedule ingest from the playout automation system, and the ability to frame-accurately identify different placement opportunities such as ad breaks and ad spots or any other program boundaries. In addition, frame accurate signaling allows for multiple-use cases downstream; including blackout, dynamic ad insertion and program substitution.

16

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

With greater control and accuracy over the delivery of ad content, the ground is therefore prepared for downstream Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI). This in turn removes any latency at the time of switching between original programming and replacing or inserting ad spots — ensuring a true TV-like quality of experience for viewers, with reduced customer churn. The innovative, breakthrough solution offers the following key differentiators: • Holistic viewing rights management for both broadcast and OTT. PRISMA allows broadcasters to understand which program is authorized to be viewed, by which audience. • Features a flexible integration platform, supporting industry standard automation and control interfaces (BxF, SCTE-35, CableLabs and ESAM) allowing broadcasters and operators to maintain their existing ecosystem while delivering new capabilities. • PRISMA forms part of a complete end-to-end solution. It is pre-integrated with advertising insertion (MKPZ), encoding and switching (MKEL), storage and delivery. Through PRISMA, MediaKind is now giving TV service providers and broadcasters new features that allow ads to be delivered seamlessly to the viewer, while maximizing the potential to introduce new offerings such as accurate start over and ad replacement. With PRISMA, broadcasters can deliver a better consumer experience, which helps to reduce customer churn, maintain and grow revenues while also delivering more valuable and better-targeted ad inventory. As part of the newly launched MediaKind Personalization Suite, PRISMA provides new monetization potential, offering content distribution rights definition and enforcement together with the delivery of consistent, high-quality and immersive media experiences through the MediaFirst platform. MediaKind’s comprehensive advertising capabilities address an age where TV advertising has met the internet, and the traditional one-to-many broadcast approach is shifting to one-to-one conversations with targeted audiences. www.mediakind.com

PRIME FOCUS TECHNOLOGIES

CLEAR Vision Cloud Native Media Recognition Artificial Intelligence Platform TM

Today, many ready-made artificial intelligence (AI) tools are available that recognize specific aspects of video content, such as particular objects, audio dialog, on-screen text, celebrity faces and even emotions. While these are useful for addressing specific tasks, many organizations experience several challenges while working with these. For example, most AI tools are trained to solve generic uses cases across multiple industries, thereby limiting their

effectiveness for media and entertainment use cases. What’s more, standalone AI engines may be able to recognize specific elements within individual video frames, but they lack the ability to combine these findings in a contextual manner and identify complex sequences (like a particular character in a car chase). To address these challenges for the media asset management marketplace, Prime Focus Technologies (PFT) developed CLEAR™ Vision Cloud, a native media recognition AI platform, which builds machine wisdom from intelligence to transform media business operations. A module of PFT’s CLEAR Media ERP, Vision Cloud leverages the collective intelligence of the industry’s most sophisticated AI solutions along with PFT’s homegrown models, and brings context to provide machine wisdom for driving

19

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

better decision-making. Vision Cloud synthesizes and focuses on the most important annotations to deliver search results that are far more meaningful and contextual than can be obtained by any standalone AI tool. What makes Vision Cloud so groundbreaking is its ability to identify complex elements like compound objects, sounds, commentary, actions and best-suited (contextual) thumbnails, which off-the-shelf AI tools cannot. For instance, the platform can detect sequences like a specific character in a car chase/fighting on a train, actions like punching/ kissing and video segments like credits/promos/recaps. It tags all content for Advanced Free Text Intelligent Search, and has a rich feature set based on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Fuzzy Logic and Thesaurus. For ease of use, it also features built-in voice search functionality. This innovative product draws on PFT’s expertise in using machine learning models to solve specific business challenges, plus a decade-long experience of collecting, curating and annotating content (over 400 million tags to date). The platform can be used to search digital media and easily extract relevant content for multiple use cases across the content lifecycle — from creation and post production to distribution and marketing. Specific content operations where the platform can play a critical role include Cataloguing, Promo Creation, Localization, Sports, Compliance Editing and VoD Distribution. By delivering logical, contextual search results, Vision Cloud facilitates faster decision-making, improves scalability and opens up new monetization opportunities. Its immense potential to drive valuable time savings (which in turn results in lower costs) and tap the potential of existing content make it an excellent candidate for TV Technology’s Product Innovation Awards in 2018. www.primefocustechnologies.com/CLEAR_Vision_Cloud

ROHDE & SCHWARZ

R&S SpycerNode Media storage system R&S SpycerNode offers a new and radically different approach to the broadest range of broadcast and media storage requirements. R&S SpycerNode represents the first in a new breed of storage systems that harness the latest advances in High Performance Computing (HPC), a term that refers to the system’s performance, scalability and redundancy. HPC is a combination of hardware, file system and RAID approach. HPC employs redundancy using software “RAID” technologies called erasure coding in combination with declustering to increase overall performance and reduce rebuild times. Also, system scalability is almost infinite and expansion is possible during operation.

The most compelling aspect of R&S SpycerNode is its building-block characteristics. It provides the ability to build a single global name space with different speeds of storage node. In developing R&S SpycerNode, Rohde & Schwarz engineers have looked at many of the key issues that impact media storage systems within high-performance video editing environments from annoying maintenance requirements — such as defraging — to much more serious system failures including dying disk drives, which can have catastrophic consequences to a project that is being worked on.

20

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

R&S SpycerNode features Rohde & Schwarz‘s device manager web application, which makes it much easier to set up and use Rohde & Schwarz solutions in an integrated fashion. Device manager helps to reduce setup times and simplifies maintenance and service due to its intuitive web-based UI operated through a single client. A critical requirement of any high-performance video storage system is proven data security. In developing R&S SpycerNode, Rohde & Schwarz has introduced data protection systems based on erasure coding and declustering. Erasure coding means that a data block is always written including parity. Declustering is a part of the data protection approach of HPC setups (formerly known as RAID). It is software-based and in comparison to a traditional RAID setup the spare disk is spread over all other disks and is not a dedicated disk. This will decrease rebuild times and reduce performance impact. Also, there are no limitations with the RAID controller, which results in much higher IOPS (Input/Output operations per second). Importantly, there is no impact on system performance over time due to declustering. R&S SpycerNode comes in multiple 2U and 5U chassis designs, which are available with NL-SAS HDD and SAS SSDs in different capacities. An additional 2U24 chassis design is a pure flash system. There are main processor units and JBOD units. A main unit is always redundant, equipped with two appliance controllers (AP). Each AP features two 100 Gbit interfaces resulting in four 100 Gbit interfaces per main unit. The combination of different chassis systems makes R&S SpycerNode applicable to a very broad range of applications. The 2U system represents a compact, lightweight unit that is ideal for application within mobile productions as well as offering a very dense, high-speed storage device for on-premise applications. A larger 5U system offers sophisticated large-scale storage facilities on-premise within broadcast production centres and post facilities. www.rohde-schwarz.com

Delivering outstanding color rendition (CRI 96, TLCI 91) made possible by Rotolight’s own AccuColour™ LED phosphor technology, the Anova PRO 2 is well-equipped to produce flattering skin tones for on air talent. “As you get older you get more and more excited about soft lights I think,” jokes RTS-nominated presenter, Martin Stanford, who has over 30 years’ experience in broadcast. “The Anova PRO 2s are very flattering. It used to be the case where you’d have to set up reflectors to get nice skin tones, but we don’t have to do that with Rotolight.” Providing an RJ45 port as well as standard five-pin DMX and Rotolight’s wireless DMX, the Anova PRO 2 also offers a variety of control options. “Five-pin DMX is great, but the problem is you end up with massive cables

22

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

across your ceiling and if one light fails, you’re going to lose all of them,” says Wesley Dodd, CEO of Celebro Media. “The advantage of using RJ45 is that every light can be connected independently, and you can run it through a standard Ethernet socket that you’re likely to have already anyway, so it’s easy to set up and is a fraction of the price.” The Anova PRO 2 was also recently used on the set of British reality show “Dancing on Ice,” to capture glamour shots. Mounted on custom-made hex rings, DOP, Chris Yacoubian (“The Voice UK,” “Strictly Come Dancing”), controlled the lights via a lighting desk and five-pin DMX connection that triggered Rotolight’s industry-first suite of built-in lighting effects: CineSFXTM. “We used the Anova PRO 2s to create a number of effects, like firelight or paparazzi and quickly switch between them and the continuous light with just a flick of a button. That gave us the edge over other TV shows and provided the cherry on the cake for the glamour shots,” says Yacoubian. “In a studio literally made of ice, we constantly pushed them to their limits and they didn’t let us down. Apart from the great functionality, the lights are really energy efficient, which was vital for us as we were running so many at the same time, and the set was being powered by generators. They are also safe and generate no heat that we had to worry about, while drawing hardly any power — unlike traditional lighting.” The Anova PRO 2 also doubles as a High Speed Sync-capable flash unit, delivering up to 250 percent additional power and providing the perfect hybrid solution for stills and video productions. www.rotolight.com/product/anova-pro-2-bi-colour-50o

SOFTATHOME

AddressableTV for Ad Insertion on Multiscreen Compatible With User Privacy Thanks to AI algorithms, AddressableTV provides a valuable ad insertion mechanism to target real needs while respecting individuals. As European privacy and data regulations are becoming more stringent with the recent GDPR, SoftAtHome has developed a new addressable TV technology for operators to benefit from the programmatic TV market. The new offering targets ads on multiscreen for linear and nonlinear (Replay, nPVR, VOD or catchup TV) content while maintaining user privacy.

AddressableTV can dynamically and seamlessly replace ads on the ad tunnels. The solution’s frame accuracy enables a transparent experience for end users. Each ad replacement is managed individually, enabling an ad-to-ad replacement that works also when zapping within an ad tunnel. Furthermore, the live video editing is carried out within the STB and does not need complex backend infrastructure to be deployed by content providers. Based on VAST signal, SoftAtHome has developed two new best-in-class technologies: one for live decoding and one for ad insertion itself to ensure a complete synchronization. The video player is able to start buffering the next ad while playing the

26

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

current one. Associated with a precise PTS-based triggering and a frame-accurate start and stop, it can start a new video in less than 200ms. Ad insertion is triggered by SCTE35 tags that control a new bufferization. In order to reduce CDN ads constraints as well, ads can be served from a remote unicast server or pushed to the STB for local storage to optimize network usage. SoftAtHome has as well developed a peer-to-peer architecture in which each STB can become a server for other users, creating a distributed CDN and reducing platform investments for the operators. SoftAtHome has developed AI-embedded profiling techniques to manage targeted ads while securing data privacy. SoftAtHome’s solution is unique in terms of data privacy it brings. Subscribers profiles are only stored and encrypted locally inside the STB so no one can access this private information. The inclusion of breakthrough AI algorithms allows devices powered by SoftAtHome’ solution to segment this data into profiles. The complexity of doing implicit profiling on a TV screen is due to the fact that this is a screen used by the whole family, compared to personal screens of mobile devices for instance. The different profiles are activated based on combinations of time split, usages, remote control usages (in three clicks, we are able to differentiate two people) as well as voice signatures. These precise profiles are then used by AddressableTV to target the right ad to the right user at the right time. SoftAtHome AddressableTV solution includes audience measurement algorithms to bring detailed and precise viewership data to operators so they can optimize user ad viewing and monetization. This solution has been successfully demonstrated in 2018 to major French live TV broadcasters (TF1, France Television, M6 group and Canal+ groups), which were impressed by such a level of rendering and are now convinced by this new revolutionary technology. Embedded profiling provides the best answer to data privacy in the context of GDPR, the European regulatory context. www.softathome.com

STREAMBOX

Chroma Advanced Streaming Encoder Decoder Streambox Chroma is a high-performance, software-defined, real-time streaming solution for broadcast applications such as remote newsgathering, live news production and live event contribution, and post-production collaborative applications including live reviews, color grading, VFX creation and editing.

features include UDP unicast, broadcast or multicast, adjustable Forward Error Correction and correction embedded metadata. Master quality video bit rates of up to 120 Mbps enables the delivery of even cinematic quality video contribution. Chroma can be configured to work with Streambox Cloud Services dis-

Linux-based Chroma systems included a number of leading edge and future-ready capabilities such as an updated ACT-Level 5 codec that supports the most advanced color profiles, color spaces, color depths and video resolutions. At a base level, the Chroma Encoder/Decoder offers 10-bit 4:2:2 HD video, but Chroma also works with HDR standards such as SMPTE 372 including HDR modes, Rec.709, DCI P3, Rec.2020, gamut HDR10 PQ/HLG and Dolby Vision. Moving up a step, Chroma works with UHD resolution and can provide up to 12-bit 4:4:4 chroma sampling, again with HDR and Wide Color Gamut support for the best visual experience in the future. In the most demanding post-production environments, Chroma provides RGB/ XYZ color space at 2K and 4K DCI resolutions. Because Chroma can be configured with SDI plus HDMI output, the decoder can be set to include HDR metadata so that other software and hardware is not needed, and additional configuration and support is not required. The latest video interfaces are available as Quad link, Dual link 12G, 6G, 3G SDI I/O and HDMI output with Rec.2020, HDR-10 metadata support. Support of up to 16 channels and of uncompressed PCM audio with 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound makes streaming of productions that even incorporate technologies such as Dolby Atomos and DTS-X no problem. Unique to Streambox, is the specialized low delay multi-path protocol (LDMP) integrated into Chroma for dynamic real-time encoding adjustment of video transport performance, assuring reliable video playout over unreliable Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G and wired public IP networks. Support for network bonding means transport has additional reliability and redundancy. LDMP provides intelligent utilization of available network paths to achieve higher rates of transport and playback with minimal 500 ms to 2 second end-to-end latency even over public internet networks at significantly lower bandwidth than other systems. Other advanced networking

tribution to any number of designated destinations around the world at high quality and low latency, or set to work with a point-to-point connection, or to multiple local and/or globally placed remote decoders and players. A Chroma differentiator is that it can stream out simultaneously to network locations, websites and social media platforms simultaneously. End-to-end strong AES encryption with a symmetric key, forms a protective shield around the transport of valuable video content with no increase in stream latency. As a software-defined system, some capabilities can be added with a software upgrade. Chroma systems can function as just as an encoder, just a decoder, or both by how it is configured, and there is also an integrated software-based media player. Chroma is easy to use taking 30 minutes or less for network setup and use for playout management. A web-based user interface with customizable presets and live video preview permits secure local or remote access. Chroma enables more flexible broadcast workflows, and the costs of covering news and other live events can be reduced by supplementing or removing existing satellite or microwave links.

TELESTREAM

Telestream iQ Video Monitoring and Analytics Solutions Streaming performance and viewer QoE (Quality of Experience) have suffered as more and more viewers consume content over unmanaged networks. With so many potential bottlenecks across multiple infrastructures, it has been impossible until now to holistically monitor and analyze video across

the entire distribution pipeline. Amazon’s recent failure to successfully stream the US Open to the U.K. is a recent headline event illustrating a systemic problem. Turner Sports waiving its pay-per-view price for the Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson match is a more recent sign of the big problems encountered streaming live events. Telestream has developed the world’s first fully-virtualized adaptive bit rate (ABR) video monitoring and analytics solution to offer end-to-end correlated video service monitoring from ingest to viewer. With this solution, broadcasters, service providers and network operators gain increased visibility and intelligence, increased flexibility and control and, critically, increased return on investment.

28

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

Leveraging the unique end-to-end integrated monitoring approach pioneered by Telestream’s iQ family of video quality assurance solutions, this approach ensures Quality of Experience (QoE) for subscribers and Quality of Service (QoS) for service providers. It spans the entire content production and distribution network, right up to a consumer’s living room or mobile device. Telestream iQ video monitoring and analytics solutions encompass data ingest to viewer data acquisition, including pre/ post encoder, publishing and post origin/cache stages, through to third-party client-side analytics integration. The system provides a single integrated graphical user interface for intuitive video service management and troubleshooting. Telestream iQ solutions help leading providers ensure the highest video quality, reduce problem resolution time while creating an improved overall customer viewing experience. This approach makes money by reducing subscriber churn, increasing service deployment velocity and growing subscribers through higher-quality services. At the same time, they save money, reducing service level agreement penalties and non-compliance penalties. Telestream iQ video monitoring and analytics help to strengthen user brands: fixing issues before subscriber impact, adding video quality metrics to Customer Experience Management (CEM) and demonstrating competitive advantage with Video Quality Assurance (VQA). “If you are a content owner, broadcaster or service provider you live and die by your ability to provide the best quality experience wherever and whenever your viewers demand. In today’s virtualized, cloud-centric environments monitoring is not an option — it is absolutely essential,” stated Joel Daly. “These unique virtual monitoring capabilities provide agile deployment options for broadcasters and network operators worldwide.” www.telestream.net/iq/overview.htm

All of the settings are visible on a clear, accurate display located on the back of the light and, using two rotary controls, can adjust settings or trigger the flash. Also offering a built-in Elinchrom Skyport receiver, the AEOS is able to be controlled using a transmitter from up to 200m away. Rotolight’s own AccuColour™ LED phosphor technology delivers outstanding color rendition (CRI 96, TLCI 91) saving user’s time, money and

hassle. With accurate replication of colors playing such a vital role in the quality of image and video production, the AEOS is well-equipped to accurately replicate color across the whole spectrum, especially skintones. Allowing users to work both quickly and safely, the AEOS’ LED bulbs run entirely cool — unlike traditional tungsten bulbs — and remain safe to touch no matter the quantity of lights or the length of time they’re running for. The AEOS also offers the option for the unit to be powered by V-lock battery as well as mains, allowing not only for ease of use on location, but also minimizing the risks associated with complex cabling setups; an advantage particularly when working in public spaces with larger crews or members of the public present. Recognized for the benefits it affords creatives across the photo, video and film industries, the AEOS has garnered numerous awards since its launch, including Newsshooter’s Gear of the Year award for the versatility it affords teams. “If you are running the AEOS off a 95Wh V-lock battery you can do so at full output for hours and hours. If you use that same battery on a competitors’ 1x1 panel, you can’t even run the light at 100 percent output because of the power draw,” says Newsshooter’s Matt Allard. “The ability to take a light on location and be able to run it off a camera battery, which is fairly easy to travel with as well, at full power for long periods of time is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.” www.rotolight.com/product-category/aeos

WORLDCAST SYSTEMS

SmartFM — Artificial Intelligence for FM transmitters WorldCast Systems, with its Ecreso FM transmitter brand, launches the first Artificial Intelligence dedicated to FM radio. This worldwide patented technology brings significant benefits to radio broadcasters in terms of transmitter performance and efficiency. SmartFM is engineered to • • •

enhance the listening experience, lower energy costs by 10 to 40%, and empower broadcasters to limit their impact on the environment with lower CO2 emissions.

Significantly Improving FM Radio With AI There is continuing pressure to reduce operating costs and optimize service coverage while improving energy consumption. For a long time, engineers have been trying to make radio more efficient. AM broadcasting - which requires huge quantities of electricity - has seen technologies such as Dynamic Carrier Control or Enhance AM Companding dynamically adapt power consumption to the program content. Unfortunately, these AM technologies noticeably impact audio quality (audible distortion, pumping effects) but were used anyway given the tremendous cost savings of 40% to 50%! More recently, 5G infrastructures have been developed for better efficiency. There is continuing pressure to implement “greener” solutions and the energy consumption per bit becomes increasingly important for the future of mobile networks. Back to FM broadcasting, energy savings had already been reached with solutions such as LDMOS efficiencies to broadcasting chain optimizations (embedded stereo encoders, monitoring tools, RDS, sound

processing). These methods, which can still generate decent savings in the short and long run, are nonetheless limited by the lack of dynamic adaptation.

VERITONE

Veritone Attribute Veritone Attribute is an AI-powered media attribution application that tracks the efficacy of advertising in broadcast radio. The technology, which delivers customer behavior impact analytics from prerecorded, native and organic mentions, enables broadcasters to systematically verify and analyze the effect

of the customers’ advertising placements in near real time. Veritone’s new intelligent media attribution solution empowers broadcaster sales representatives and campaign managers to demonstrate an advertiser’s campaign effectiveness and reveal data-driven insights for optimization of ad placements to drive greater customer return on investment (ROI), helping to drive increases in customer advertising spending. According to one survey of marketing professionals, the attribution goal of highest priority for marketers was optimization of marketing program spend across media channels, but a majority of the respondents stated that technology limitations restrict their ability to carry out attribution properly. For media broadcasters whose business models rely primarily on advertising, this lack of empirical evidence makes it difficult to lure customer advertising budgets away from digital channels that provide data-rich, real-time attribution. What’s more, increasingly popular native advertisements are not captured in programming logs, requiring manual verification of ad delivery, and further extending reporting times. Put simply, today’s manual ad verification workflows are often painfully slow and attribution analysis incomplete. By the time broadcasters are able to report on ad placements and their customers attempt to manually correlate online transac-

Product Innovation Awards Program Guide 2018

tions, campaigns have often already run their course before the ad placements can be optimized. In the end, advertisers are left with incomplete broadcast attribution data, making it difficult for broadcasters to demonstrate the value of advertising campaigns during contract negotiations in order to keep and increase the ad spend of their customers. Veritone Attribute equips broadcasters and their advertising customers with tools to make informed cause-and-effect connections between any reference to an advertiser during a broadcast, such as a preproduced spot, a live read or an organic mention and the desired target audience’s actions taken on the advertiser’s website. Through the intelligent correlation of a broadcaster’s programming and an advertiser’s Google Analytics website data, Veritone Attribute helps broadcasters advise customers throughout their campaigns in near real time of how their ad dollars are best leveraged to accelerate the target audience’s path to purchase. Advertisers gain assurance in their broadcast advertising investments through a data-driven feedback loop that identifies areas of optimization across ad placements, dayparts and ad creatives to drive the greatest ROI. Veritone Attribute is a quantum leap forward in the analysis of broadcast advertising efficacy. Until now, there was no scalable technology with industry-wide application capable of capturing offline consumer response to broadcast mentions. With Veritone Attribute, we elevate broadcast media measurement to new levels of precision and provide a path to custom attribution modeling. The technology will have a major impact for broadcasters by generating rapid, comprehensive performance and optimization reports that broadcasters and advertisers can use for directional guidance in their radio advertising decisions. Veritone Attribute systematically verifies advertisements and mentions in broadcasts and correlates their affect to customer website traffic and subsequent online product or service purchases. Correlated information is displayed in a near real-time media attribution dashboard, empowering broadcasters to demonstrate advertising efficacy to customers. www.veritone.com
