During this time — the early days of the transition to digital — Mark progressed through the engineering ranks to become lead digital engineer with a focus on hardware, FPGA and low-level software designs, and then later worked as a product manager of the large routing, multiviewer and control system product lines. This experience proved invaluable to Mark, establishing the sound foundations from which even greater achievements were to come.

Mark’s journey ultimately brought him to Ross Video, where he has the privilege of leading a strong talent pool that has created such groundbreaking products as Ultrix — the innovative and highly disruptive routing and AV processing platform.

Since its introduction in 2015, the Ultrix software-defined platform has received eight industry awards including a 2018 TV Technology Product Innovation Award for Ultrix-FR5, a variation that combines a fully featured video/audio routing platform with additional multiviewers, frame syncs, audio processing and UHD gearboxing, all in an extremely compact 5RU chasis.

Rob Gonsalves Director of Architecture, Avid Technology patents, trademarks, copyrights and open source licensing.

Currently, Rob is leading Avid’s efforts around the use of AI and deep learning to streamline digital content creation.

Rob’s groundbreaking work has helped earn Avid one Academy Award for Avid Film Composer (1999) and three Emmy awards — for Media Composer Non-linear Editing System (1993), Media Composer Multi-Camera Editing (2017) and the Philo T. Farnsworth Award for companies and organization that have significantly affected the state of television and broadcast engineering over a long period of time (2018).

Avid’s mission statement when it was founded was simple: Help people better communicate through technology. That resonated with Rob then and continues to motivate him today. For Rob, being an industry innovator means exploring the intersection between what’s needed and what’s possible, and his ethos is that to find good solutions you need to approach problem-solving from both sides. He believes media technology has an exciting future ahead as the trends of faster computers, higher bandwidth networks and smarter systems make communicating with technology easier and more readily available to people than ever before. But, he also knows that the challenge for individuals moving forward will be to use this powerful technology responsibly.

Rob Gonsalves is an Emmy- and Oscar-winning engineer who, as Avid Technology’s 15th employee, helped give birth to nonlinear digital editing and Media Composer. Today, 30 years after he joined the company, Rob is an Engineer Fellow at Avid and leader of its architecture team.

When Rob joined Avid he was the company’s first QA engineer and created an automated bug reporting system.

As a software developer, he is credited with implementing many of the features of Media Composer, including PICT import, vectorscope/waveform monitors, motion effects, dissolves, wipes and a multicamera editing system. He also led the development of the architecture of Avid’s media enterprise products including the initial design for MediaCentral | UX, the cloud-based web front end to the MediaCentral platform. Later, Rob designed and led a team to build an advanced video color-correction system for Avid Symphony, including prototyping, collecting customer feedback and software development.

Rob currently holds 37 patents, many of which are for video effects and color correction. He’s led several projects including the transformation to Agile Scrum, the architecture and development of Avid’s Connectivity Toolkit, and the design of the disaster recovery architecture for Avid’s systems.
