DAY TWO EDITION 2020 | WWW.ISEUROPE.ORG L-R: June Sarpong, Chris Hope, co-founder and executive director, The Loop Lab, Robin R Hamerlinck and Sarah Joyce

Trailblazing inclusion in the AV industry Broadcaster and campaigner June Sarpong OBE was the keynote speaker at an AVIXA Diversity Council Forum on the Main Stage yesterday. She spoke about the benefits of diversity and inclusion, and how we all win when we work out ways to include everybody, creating a framework where anyone, regardless of their background, can fulfil their potential. Encouraging inclusion and promoting human cultural and systemic diversity in all forms within the commercial AV industry through the utilisation of professional networking, educational opportunities, leadership, development and community is the main priority of the AVIXA Diversity Council. “I believe when you have equal opportunity, coupled with self belief, anything is possible,” said Sarpong, who became the first ever director of creative diversity at the BBC in October 2019. “So, as leaders, what you have to be asking yourselves is are you creating the kind of environment in your workplaces? Do your colleagues and employees have access to equal opportunity, but also, are you creating the kind of culture that means that they can truly believe in themselves. I believe when you are able to do that, the results are extraordinary.”

“I think what’s really interesting about the AV industry is that actually – when it comes to social mobility – you’re far ahead of many other industries,” Sarpong continued. “If you look at the general makeup of your sound person, there is a real increased proportion of those from working-class backgrounds. But how can you expand that to include other under-represented groups? How can you go into communities that have been forgotten and inform them that this is a place for them?” In the panel session that followed, Sarah Joyce, chief global officer at AVIXA, said that she is seeing colleges and private universities recognising the importance of bringing young talent into the industry: “Recognising diversity is everything,” she said. “It is not just gender, sexuality, race. It’s about embracing everyone to offer them opportunities within society.” Robin R Hamerlinck, senior vice president of IT & CIO at Shure, added: “When you talk to people you learn about their challenges really quickly, and you also learn how to create the kind of workplace where you can integrate those challenges.”

Mixed reality technologies in focus at XR Summit ISE 2020 The accelerating rate of change in virtual and augmented reality, as well as immersive audio, was reflected in the latest XR Summit ISE, which took place yesterday at the Hotel Okura. There was considerable discussion of the creative and practical implications of XR at this year’s The Elumenati’s Hilary McVicker discussed pushing creative boundaries with XR event. In the first keynote, ‘Immersive XR: Pushing creative boundaries’, The Elumenati VP sales and marketing Hilary McVicker pondered the capacity of spatial XR to provide “a social, collaborative way to experience immersive content”. Drawing on specific use cases across entertainment, enterprise and education, McVicker explored the practical challenges of deploying XR “at scale” and the potential of group experiences in spatial XR to “bridge the physical and digital worlds”. Taking a more firmly practical angle, advisXR founder and advisor Jan Pflueger used his keynote to consider the integration of VR and AR into corporate culture. There is now an enhanced “general awareness” of the role that an AR ecosystem can play continued on page 3

CRS explores AV in mission-critical control The inaugural Control Rooms Summit (CRS), which took place at the Hotel Okura yesterday, explored the theme of ‘How better integrated AV will save and protect lives’. Focussing on the world of mission-critical command and control, it explored how the provision of AV technology can help to deliver more efficient operations. Samuel Forbes, general manager of Fugro, explored the impact of remotely operated vehicles on Australia’s oil and gas industries. The ability to put employees at a greater distance from potential harm, and use remotely operated vehicles to carry out a wider range of tasks, has been a huge boon for safety. However, it has also brought “further challenges and potential complexity” to control rooms, as Forbes explained. It’s hard to think of a more mission-critical installation than the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle collider operated by CERN and situated on the France-Switzerland border. In a fascinating presentation, CERN control centre manager Rossano Giachino explored the hugely complex control room operation that underpins the LHC. He also provided some insight into the future of the project. The entire accelerator complex is currently in the midst of a ‘shutdown’ period entailing a substantial upgrade to increase the luminosity of the LHC by a factor of 10, which is due for completion in 2021. Other contributors to the Summit included Crestron business development executive Koen Ameye and CCD Design & Ergonomics MD David Watts. CRS was staged in association with the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance (ICCRA), which connects professionals through special interest groups for operations, technology, environment, ergonomics, and people and performance. The event was chaired by ICCRA chairman Peter Prater.

The inaugural event was chaired by ICCRA chair Peter Prater

continued from page 1 in delivering a more creative and efficient corporate environment, but “many questions remain” about how best to achieve this. Accordingly, Pflueger explored the pathways involved in translating an XR-driven idea to reality, as well as the technical requirements of implementing these new technologies in day-to-day corporate projects. In a judiciously balanced programme of presentations and discussions, another highlight was a panel about the empowering of broadcast and media by XR. Speakers including White Light technical director Andy Hook, filmmaker and consultant Nina Salomons and disguise global technical solutions manager Peter Kirkup considered how XR is impacting workflow and production to deliver AR and mixed reality within broadcast, film and live production.

Inavation Awards 2020 winners revealed The Inavation Awards 2020 were presented last night, with 22 winners taking home accolades from the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. The ceremony underwent a significant makeover this year with the launch of both the ISEsponsored Smart Systems Awards and the Business Awards. The Smart Systems Awards are designed to promote the rise of Smart Buildings and encourage the development and application of intelligent building management and control systems. Vanti and AVN Solutions jointly won the award for their work at The Lodge, a luxury residence for Tottenham Hotspur football players and coaching teams. The Business Awards represent a new way to recognise manufacturers of AV technology – and so depart from the Inavation Awards Technology categories. Andrea Piemonti, founder of ALA Equipment Company, was named Project Manager of the Year, while Prase Engineering was named as Distributor of the Year. The 12 Project category winners came from 10 countries and, according to Inavate, “represent the best examples of AV integration seen across the globe in the last year”. Dubai and Istanbul airports both featured, as did a new room in the UN Office in Geneva and a 5D dome cinema of “staggering proportions”. Project category winners were: Control Room: Aesthetix Technologies – Dubai Airport AOCC, UAE; Corporate: Snelling Business Systems – Abcam Global HQ, UK; Education: Polymedia – Engineering and Technology School #777, Russia; Government: Media Vision – Room XIX at The United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland; Healthcare: Jones AV – New Papworth Hospital, UK; Hospitality: ALA Equipment Company – Parklane Hotel Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Limassol, Cyprus; House of Worship: Stage Audio Works – Rivers Church Kyalami, South Africa; Leisure and Entertainment: Kraftwerk Living Technologies – Magic Glaze 5D, China; Live Event: Alabama / Dushow – Fete Des Vignerons 2019, Switzerland; Retail: Vichai Trading (1983) – The Prelude, One Bangkok, Thailand; Transport: Astel LED – Istanbul Airport, Turkey; Visitor Attraction: Electronics & Engineering – The Bicentennial Experience, Singapore. Flexibility the key to workplace productivity Flexibility, personalisation, privacy and finding effective ways of measuring ROI should be four top priorities for every workplace investment. So argued Elisa Ronka, Siemens’ European lead for smart office, who opened up Tuesday’s Smart WorkPlace track at the Hotel Okura with her keynote vision of the top qualities needed in future commercial workspaces. Extreme flexibility shouldn’t be restricted to desk and room utilisation but needs to flow through to maintenance services like cleaning, which, she added, should be available on demand “like Netflix” rather than offered as scheduled services. To improve workforce productivity, Ronka said apps were also crucial in terms of personalising the workplace for people and getting them to treat it like architect Carlo Ratti’s so-called ‘Second Skin’. “Given that 90% of all costs in an office come from the staff within it, we really need to address the people who generate the revenue,” Ronka added. Ronka: “Smart workplaces start One simple way of improving productivity, she suggested, was using apps to with people” ensure that the temperature of the building is right for productivity. “Data from apps that track workers’ feedback on temperature in certain spaces at certain times of the day can be passed on to smart business management systems which learn and adapt to the most effective temperatures automatically.” She warned however that too much tracking can upset people.“We’re not talking about GDPR here, more a feeling that people and worker’s councils think that their privacy is being infringed and that apps are being used to track their every move. “You have to be careful not to lose the trust of your workers,” she continued. “This isn’t necessarily a tech issue, it’s a change management issue. Leaders need to foster a culture of openness – perhaps start by disclosing where people can find you.” Justifying return on investment in workplace investments can often be the toughest challenge, Ronka admitted – adding that it’s not always easy to correlate productivity with an improved workplace. However, if businesses want to attract new digital native talent an outmoded workplace could be a big turnoff. “From this perspective, we need to switch the mindset of ROI to doing the calculation on the risk of inaction – what are we losing by not changing the way we operate?” Ronka said.

Face up to video meetings GOOGLE Stand: 15-N265 As a company that prides itself on trying out its own enterprise solutions before launching them to a wider audience, Google also has a word for such an approach: ‘dog-fooding’. This strategy also applies to the internet giant’s own video-first meeting solutions, in which it has been investing for over 10 years. Google: Bringing everyone together with Hangouts Meet Tom Granese, goto-market strategist at Google, said the company is convinced of the benefits of using video in meetings in order to improve relationships with colleagues or clients. Indeed, 25,000 video-enabled meetings rooms have already been established at Google, and around 50 new rooms are being added per week. “It’s the next best thing to a face-to-face meeting, so we help our customers to do that too,” said Granese. He noted that implementing videoenabled meeting rooms can help a company’s bottom line by reducing travel costs, while also improving its environmental credentials through reduced carbon emissions. “Just because you are not in the same room does not mean you don’t have a seat at the table,” he added. “It’s been effective for us.” Google sees itself as a user-driven company that builds solutions in a way that makes it easy for people to access and learn. G Suite Meeting is a set of tools that aims to promote team collaboration and enable more productive meetings, including Hangouts Meet and Jamboard. Google also offers an interactive guide to help companies plan, design and deploy meeting rooms for their business.

Nuna Becic and Jim Schanz of Shure onstage at the IntelliMix Room launch

DSP out of the box SHURE Stand: 3-B100 Day one of ISE 2020 saw Shure holding an on-stage event to take the wraps off its IntelliMix Room software-based digital signal processing (DSP) system that aims to revolutionise the world of video conferencing. Working under the tagline ‘DSP in a .Zip’ at launch, IntelliMix Room is the first audio processing software for Windows 10 PCs optimised for Shure conferencing microphones. It means that rather than having to unbox and install multiple DSP units, users can simply download and deploy software to in-room devices within seconds, without the need for more cables, additional hardware or large AV racks. Jim Schanz, Shure’s vice president of global sales, integrated systems, told a packed Main Stage: “IntelliMix Room will provide a consistent experience from room to 4 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

ISE08_Page_004JRPB.indd 4

room, despite the room size. IntelliMix Room will allow integrators to install more into the smaller rooms. Since it’s software-based, there will be no other box that you have to wire. It’s an application that runs on Windows 10, so it’s not anything that you need to actively open and actively manage – it’s always running on your PC.” IntelliMix Room is said to work seamlessly with popular conferencing platforms and aims to reduce echoes, eliminate background noise and deliver crystal-clear calls. In other words, as Shure claims, “the days of complex DSP hardware end with a simple download”. Mark Humrichouser, vice president of global sales at Shure, said: “A software product has been a natural progression for us and it really continues the tradition of innovation at Shure. “High-quality audio is now something an entire organisation can appreciate, and it’s also further evidence of the ongoing convergence between IT and AV in the business environment. It’s the culmination of many years of work in that space. The big difference is that software has been, traditionally, included in the hardware and today we’ve taken it out of the box and we’re offering it on its own. That’s very exciting for us.”

First lucky winner finds glittering prize Emma Kennedy from BDO LLP was the first person to find a Golden Ticket inside the Official Show Guide at ISE yesterday. Not only was she the first winner, but Kennedy was also attending the show for the first time, with the intention of researching suppliers in the experiential events market. There are more chances to find a Golden Ticket, which is sponsored by Bluesound, as each day of the show two readers of the Official Show Guide will win a special prize if they find a ticket inside their copy of the publication. Each Golden Ticket, when found, can be exchanged by the lucky winner at the Bluesound stand (5-T140) for a Bluesound Pulse Flex 2i – an all-in-one portable high-resolution wireless multi-room streaming music speaker. Integrated systems is proving a huge opportunity for pro-audio manufacturers

Pro-audio sector hails ISE A raft of pro-audio exhibitors have sung the praises of ISE as the show bids a fond farewell to the Amsterdam RAI ahead of its 2021 relocation to Barcelona While ISE has grown exponentially across the board during its stay in the Netherlands, its popularity among the pro-audio community has accelerated significantly over the past five years or so. Early iterations of the show saw the presence of audio inextricably bound to its visual counterpart, yet more recently, dedicated pro-sound companies have become part of the fabric of the event as they seek to capitalise on a buoyant AV/integrated systems market. The vast cross-section of companies from these everexpanding markets presents major opportunities to many of the pro-audio market’s key players. As Mike Blackman, managing director at Integrated Systems Events, elaborates, it’s an area of the show that has developed significantly since its inception 16 years ago. “When we started ISE, audio was our weakest area,” said Blackman, “and we made a concerted effort to say, ‘how do we

get that community to recognise that we’re going to get the right attendees here?’ And we listened to what they wanted. The pro-audio community was one of the catalysts for the move to Barcelona, because there was more and more demand to be at the show and have space here. We’re trying to create pro-audio demo rooms and more defined areas where they can present their products and solutions in the best environments.” David Claringbold, chief marketing officer at d&b audiotechnik, said of ISE’s enduring appeal: “The d&b team takes ISE as an opportunity, to both share ideas and see what’s new with others in the integration business, not just in pro audio. ISE visitors come from various segments including corporate, live events, bars, restaurants and nightclubs, theatres and performance venues, sports venues and houses of worship – all of whom we find interesting and who might find relevant audio technology solutions from d&b.

“ISE has also created a forum in which the importance of AV and IT integration is brought into clear focus. This integration is a huge factor in the evolution of the pro-audio industry.” One of ISE’s longest-serving pro-audio exhibitors is Martin Audio, and the company has seen the appeal of the show grow and grow year after year. “Martin Audio was one of the first pro-audio manufacturers to attend ISE, joining in its third year and returning ever since to witness the continued rise of the show,” said James King, director of marketing at Martin Audio. “Our original participation was very much an experiment. Installation was a growing opportunity for Martin Audio and now most audio brands have seen installation become the majority of their business. Part of ISE’s success has been a mirror of the importance of these related markets superseding live sound for many AV companies. “Permanent installation is the largest growth opportunity for any pro-audio brand and for many is already the majority of a given brand’s revenue. ISE is the key show catering for this marketplace in EMEA and its pull is now extending to Asia and even the US.” Among those making the trip from the US to exhibit at ISE 2020 is Meyer Sound – a company which views ISE as “the most important European show” for the pro-audio industry. John McMahon, SVP sales and marketing for Meyer Sound, said: “The ISE show has become a keystone event in our marketing calendar over the past several years, for a number of reasons. First, it is now the most important European show for the industry, and Europe has always been a key market for Meyer Sound. We’ve had a company subsidiary in Germany for decades and we have distributors in nearly every other market on the continent. They collaborate with us to mount a strong presence at ISE because a great majority of their most important customers will be there. “Also, ISE is increasingly becoming a global trade show for the AV installation industry, with integrators, consultants and end users from elsewhere – Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, in particular – coming to ISE because they know they can see much more here, and see it first, when compared to smaller regional shows. That’s one reason why we are now making the most of our new product debuts at ISE.” In addition to regular exhibitors, ISE has also been able to attract plenty of new and returning business to this year’s show. One example is UK loudspeaker specialist FunktionOne, which returns this year after a hiatus. David Bruml, sales director at Funktion-One, commented: “Following our decision a few years ago to take a break from the show and focus on other opportunities, ISE has clearly gone from strength to strength, and getting an appropriate location in Hall 7 has proved impossible on account of the exhibition being oversubscribed at the RAI. We welcomed the news that the show was expanding to a new, larger home in Barcelona for 2021, and were very pleased when a stand became available for the final show in Amsterdam.” He continued: “Like Amsterdam, Barcelona is a vibrant city with a special energy, which I’m sure will have a positive impact on the show. We are now looking to potentially make ISE our primary European tradeshow.”

Huddle up! Biamp acquires HRT BIAMP Stand: 3-B90 The first day of ISE 2020 saw Biamp announcing it has entered into an agreement to acquire Italian company Huddle Room Technology (HRT) SRL, adding Huddle Hub wireless USB and content sharing products to Biamp’s range of meeting room solutions. HRT’s flagship product, the Huddle Hub, allows computers and mobile devices to connect to room peripherals, including displays, speakers, microphones and cameras, without any physical connection. Once connected, users can display content, launch applications, and engage in soft codec UC meetings on their personal device. The Huddle Hub adds multi-user screen sharing, which allows several users to share content to the room display simultaneously. Meeting attendees can also request that the displayed content is broadcast back to their laptop or mobile 6 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

device, permitting them to view content locally rather than relying on the room display. Joe Andrulis, executive vice president of corporate development at Biamp, said: “We’ve announced the acquisition of HRT, which is an Italian company that was an innovator and a pioneer in wireless USB and screen-sharing technology, so that will add to our portfolio of conferencing solutions, which is very exciting for us – we see a lot of potential there.” Andrulis added: “At this ISE show, we’ve got venue solutions for nearly all the corporates, retail, hospitality and sporting venues that you can imagine. The main message this year is about solutions and the fact that we are now addressing the venues that are brand new to us – the larger ones in the hospitality and retail sectors in particular. Overall, the message is that it’s easier than ever to put together Biamp solutions which act reliably and address the needs of the customer.”

Andrulis: “Adding to our conferencing solutions is very exciting”

Imperial College London’s Dom Pates challenged delegates to come up with their own speculative prototypes

AVIXA delegates design the Holographic Academic There aren’t many examples of how holograms are being used in higher education, so during his conference session, The Holographic Academic, senior educational technologist Dom Pates challenged conference delegates to come up with their own speculative design uses. The session was part of AVIXA’s half-day Higher Education AV Conference. The theme this year highlighted ways in which the effective application of AV tech can impact the experiences of many people. The Imperial College lecturer – whose university claimed a ‘world’s first’ two years ago when it projected life-sized 3D holographic entities onto stages from remote locations – asked conference delegates to break out into groups and discuss holographic usage in universities 10 years from now. To allow for several different perspectives, Pates gave delegates different scenarios to enable them to think of the varying logistical, technological and ethical challenges involving holograms and how they relate to teaching. One group was asked to consider the challenges of

delivering a lecture holographically with 10 minutes to spare, while another was asked how they would bring back long-dead experts from a range of academic fields. Ideas included using AI to power a plausible holographic Einstein – although how his voice would be emulated did raise further questions. Another group considered that in 10 years’ time, holographic projection would be enabled by 5G networks with lecturers and students able to access a standard holographic app on their mobile phones as a matter of course. Benefits of the technology that were considered included cost savings on travel and staff, as well as opening up access to education to a wider range of students. One group envisioned a virtual university that would give students the freedom of movement to learn when and how they wish, according to their own schedules. Concerns, however, ranged from storage considerations to holographic cheating, identity fraud and lack of actual attendance as students elect to attend class via holographic projection.

STAGE EYE Stand: 14-E132 Gaffer tape, when used for position markers in live shows, can be confusing, unreliable and take time to remove at the end of a gig. Stage Eye’s laser positioning system, which is still in development and seeking partners, is shown only when needed and can be used specifically for each band – so that if there are several different performances, the position markers can be shown specifically for that show, and no others. Jakub Lipski, CEO of Stage Eye, said: “Once you save the set of markers, you can calibrate the device on any different stage, and the set will remain the same – dimensions, distances – and in a matter of seconds, you can have the set-up ready. The system is only around 60x60cm, but can cover the whole stage in one go, or several can be used together where the sight lines are not clear.

Every exhibition strives to capture visitors’ attention, and interactive blockbusters are the highlight of next.space’s stand in Hall 14 this year. Company founder Alexander Lavrov told the ISE Daily that clients like to combine modern technologies with museum content and ideas, creating games, VR apps and 3D reconstructions, and even attracting virtual visitors worldwide to the museum and converting them to real visitors. Alexander Lavrov, founder of next.space, An iPad on the stand says his products offer an “immersive wow experience” to museums instantly displays a guide, in text, video or even game form, to what the camera is looking at. “Other on-site interactive installations make a new immersive wow experience, and enable them to help visitors dive deeper into the museum,” Lavrov said. One example being shown on the stand is a mobile game for the Museum of Arms in Moscow, which allows users to interact with firearms and see how they work, including what happens when each weapon is fired. With more than 2 million users worldwide, the exhibition is able to reach far beyond the walls of the physical museum. The company is set to move its headquarters to Rotterdam to be closer to its European clients and partners. However, most team members are located in eastern Europe and Russia, which has enabled the company to offer “middle rates per hour combined with top-notch quality”. “The key priority for the team is responsibility for our clients and real long-term partnerships with them,” Lavrov explained.

Jakub Lipski, CEO of Stage Eye with new business manager Aleksandra Dyba, in front of the laser positioning system

“A similar system was used for Eurovision but used a huge amount of resources and required a few days to program, which meant it was too expensive to use and never repeated. Our system is quick and easy to set up and, most importantly, cost-effective.”

Videowall control system specialist VuWall is showcasing a broader range of VuStream encoders and decoders in Hall 15 this week, supporting H.264 and SDVoE standards. Anna Kozel, director of marketing, VuWall, noted a growing level of frustration over the use of proprietary technology that ties companies to certain vendors. According to Kozel, VuStream appliances co-exist with other brands on the same network, so that every device in the system can be centrally managed by VuWall’s TRx centralised multi-videowall management platform. VuWall, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary at ISE 2020, is also placing a strong focus on security amid the growing trend for AV and IT convergence. For example, it is showcasing new functionality for VuWall2, the control software for the VuScape videowall controller, with automation enhancements including a new carousel for IP streams; colour detection; TLS security; VMS plug-ins; and full KVM support of IP sources.

Machine learning for broadcast and AV offers new intelligence XILINX Stand: 15-D240 Attendees interested in learning more about machine learning (ML) and how it can be applied in the AV world should make their way to the Xilinx stand in Hall 15. Here, the ‘machine learning zone’ shows how the techniques can be applied for different use cases such as facial recognition for digital signage. Rob Green, senior manager, professional AV and broadcast, said the hype around ML and artificial intelligence is on the wane, with a greater focus being placed on actually making money. Indeed, generating more revenue, saving costs and interoperability are the three main areas of focus for Xilinx at ISE. On display are a range of new ML capabilities for Xilinx 10 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

Revolutionising audio with complete solutions ASHLY AUDIO Stand: 3-C100 The latest range of Ashly Audio products – the AW Series of onwall speakers, the IS Series dual-impedance column speakers and the SP subwoofer – are on display in Hall 3 throughout ISE. The AW Series speakers are designed to take full advantage of Protēa and AquaControl DSP and have a ‘unique’ DOC crossover that reduces the off-axis deviation in sound pressure levels to less than 9dB. This provides a wider ‘sweet spot’ for audio and allows for robust bass, crisp treble and an accurate mid-range. The AW speakers are also IP-rated, so they can be used indoors Larson: “We announced a commitment to revolutionise what or outdoors. Ashly had been” Noel Larson, vice president of marketing and business development at Ashly Audio, said: “About a year ago, we announced a commitment to do 60 new products in 24 months to revolutionise what Ashly had been for 45 years. In our vertical markets – restaurants, retail, hospitality and houses of worship – we want to offer complete solutions. One of the big missing pieces were speakers dedicated for that market. Here, we have the full, workable [speaker] units – seven new speakers – and all-new software for the amps that process those speakers as well. It gives us an opportunity to bring something that we think is unique to the market.” Larson added: “The AW speakers are unique as most of those [style of speakers] on the market have a very tight sweet spot, which is great for engineering work in a studio, with one person listening, but that’s not great in a restaurant where you want everybody to hear what’s going on. Some of the work we’ve done is about widening the sweet spot of those speakers and really attacking intelligibility.” 12 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

On the company’s OEM side, Shimonishi said: “We’re working with anybody that wants to work with us.” Asked about combining ease of use and functionality, she added: “The residential guys, a lot of them want to get in, get out and get paid, and for that we have a programming tool called Accelerator, but we thought this tool is probably not going to be able to serve both masters, so we added another tool called Flex, and you can pretty much do whatever you want. And that’s how we’ve achieved both.”

The Net Chaser Ethernet speed certifier and network tester by Platinum Tools is being shown on the company’s stand this year. To certify Ethernet speed performance of cable runs, the Net Chaser conducts Bit Error Rate (BER) tests by sending data packets down specified cable runs at defined data rates to check for errors at the maximum throughput of the link. The Net Chaser reports on signal quality that can impact high-speed data transmission by measuring signal-to-noise ratio. Skew measurements report on the signal time delay between pairs that can impact Gigabit data transmission. The unit also provides continuity testing that detects opens, shorts, incorrect wiring, split pairs, reversals and high-resistance faults while accurately measuring distance to faults and total cable length. John Phillips, product manager at Platinum Tools, said: “Made in the US, the Tester offers a complete solution to test and speed certify the data-carrying capabilities of Ethernet network cables up to 1Gbps by testing for noise in the network, detecting faults in the cable wiring, and ensuring that cables are able to support the speed capabilities of active equipment. The Net Chaser’s advanced discovery gives the clearest vision of network layout and interfaces between active components such as servers, switches and routers.”

Today’s Main Stage sessions The ISE Main Stage – sponsored by Shure – is the setting for a full programme of thought leadership sessions throughout the four days of the show, produced by content partners ISE, AVIXA, CEDIA and AV Magazine. Sessions will address technology and business trends, best practice in key verticals, and topics around people management, training and diversity. All sessions are free to attend, and no advance booking is required. The ISE Main Stage is located in Hall 14 (Stand 14-B190) 10:30-11:30 The Experience Revolution - Expert panel discussion on how content and experience change everything in a brand activated world! presented by: AVIXA speaker: Jeff Day, North of 10 Advisors Join us for an energising panel discussion focused on how the experience era is challenging all previous norms for brand activation and content impact. We will dive into the creative utilisation of technology to influence and amplify audience engagement, and then move into how agencies, experience designers and integration firms can successfully participate in this exciting trend. “We are at a fascinating digital crossroads in brand marketing and communications,” says Jeff Day, North of 10 Advisors. “In my estimation, it is as transformational today as it was to a business’s ability to make the internet jump not so many years ago. As customers, we demand much more engaging and immersive experiences to increase and solidify our brand affinities. And, certainly, we vote in our recognition of these brand-activated experiences through our participation and, ultimately, spend patterns every day. “Brands that understand the wonderment and meaningful playfulness behind these phenomena are succeeding at a faster rate than those that do not. More importantly, the role that the audiovisual industry plays in delivering these experiences – from content creators to tech manufacturers – offers inspirational insight and a long-range view of a future business opportunity. “Our session highlights, from a content creator and event production point a view, the experience revolution that is driving strategy and spending across permanent and semi-permanent venues. I’m excited to be joined by a panel of expert, technologysavvy experience all-stars who will explore new demands and how they are addressing them. Join us for a stimulating exchange exploring the implications of the brand experience revolution.” 11:30-12:00 Find out how Voice Lift Technology Makes Meetings Feel Like There’s no Technology at all presented by: Shure speaker: Andrew Francis, Shure UK A voice lift system amplifies the voices of people in one part of the room just enough so that people in other parts of the room can hear them clearly. Unlike a conventional sound reinforcement system, voice lift bolsters only those frequency ranges that are most critical for intelligibility, and only enough to restore the loss caused by the distance between the farthest talker and listener in the room. The effect is so subtle that many users don’t even realise there is a sound system until it is turned off. However, the implementation of voice lift in an AV conference system or meeting room environment can be complex. Visitors to this session will learn the basics of voice lift systems and best practices to get the best results.

anthropologists and experience designers. Archimedia’s Peter Aylett explains: “How can we reimagine the role of a technology integrator in the life of a family? It’s so much more than AV, networking, lighting and control. To do this, we need to understand the fabric of a family and how to serve their needs best. We need to be incredibly creative with all the resources available to us, and get out of our tried and tested traps to apply design in order to meet the needs of the families who are our customers.”

ourselves and encouraging the mapping of the 3D world to be more democratic rather than allowing it to be led by major technology companies. “What I want delegates to take away is that there is still time to decide what this technology is going to be used for and how, and if they get on board that journey now and start to use VR and AR inside their companies or on their projects, and start to make requirements on design, can we design the future of technology, the future of the internet, in a better way than we’ve done so far?”

How virtual reality is the future of experiential and discovery presented by: ISE speaker: Alexandra Hussenot, Immersionn This talk guides delegates through the current state of immersive technologies focusing on VR, the history, opportunities and the pitfalls. Learn what we can do with virtual reality today, where it is best applied and where it will be headed tomorrow. Particular attention will be paid to 5G and shared immersive experiences. Alexandra Hussenot says: “A lot of people have heard a lot about VR and AR and they’re not sure it’s ever really going to take off. I want to explain that there has been hype but we’re out of that now into the so-called enlightenment phase where the applications and VR – the hardware and the software – are getting much more rational and much more market focused. I’ll also talk about the pitfalls of the technology – including the isolation that people are experiencing and privacy concerns – and how we can address those through educating

Discover the new era of digital signage at DSS If converting posters to screens was Digital Signage 1.0, and focusing on the importance of content was Digital Signage 2.0, then we are now in the era of Digital Signage 3.0. With its theme of ‘The Future of Digital Signage – Technology, Platforms and Solutions’, the Digital Signage Summit ISE 2020 will explore what that means to the customer journey and omnichannel engagement, how personal, individual consumer experiences can be created and leveraged, and the challenges and opportunities it represents. It will look at the role of content management systems in a digital experience platform (DXP) world, and investigate the role that increasing integration with backend systems such as ERP and CRM will play.

This year’s DSS ISE will also focus – among other topics – on ‘Sustainable, Green Signage’ and ‘Fireresistant Installation in Public Spaces’. “Corporate customers as well as digital signage users (consumers and employees alike) care increasingly about power consumption, energy management and lifecycle management – especially in Europe,” said Florian Rotberg, chairman of the DSS series and managing director of digital signage consultancy invidis. “DSS ISE will discuss approaches to more sustainable AV, energy-saving operations and reuse of existing hardware. Even though many corporates are still reluctant to spend additional budgets on sustainability, we see a change of mindset in the past months. DSS ISE remains the thought-leader event for the global digital signage industry.” NEC is Signage Solutions Partner for the event, while Bose is Audio Partner.

Explore the cinema of the future at DCS The Digital Cinema Summit (DCS), presented by ISE in conjunction with Digital Cinema Report, returns to ISE 2020 to explore how advances in digital cinema technology are transforming not just how movie theatres around the world operate but the kinds of content they can offer to their customers. Top digital cinema technology experts from around the world will discuss those changes and the new developments on the horizon. Attendees can expect to learn about whether movies still take centre stage at the cineplex, as moviegoing today can also feature online gaming, food and drink, bowling, karaoke and seats that could grace an amusement park. In this environment, what place, if any, do serious feature films have? Streaming and its impact on movie theatres is also on the agenda. There was an effort last year to bring at least 30% EU-originated content to Netflix and Amazon. Here, delegates will learn about the status of that effort and how it will affect filmmakers and cinemas in Europe, as well as discussing how theatre owners should respond to such industry shifts. “The motion picture exhibition transition from film to digital technology is now in its third decade – this is a period of dramatic experimentation,” said conference moderator and editor and publisher of Digital Cinema Report, Nick Dager. “Movie theatres are beginning to reinvent themselves and look at ways to differentiate their businesses to attract new audiences with entertainment options beyond traditional movies. The Digital Cinema Summit will explore some of the more exciting options and consider what they mean for the future.” DCS is supported by Signage Solutions Partner NEC and Audio Partner Bose. Digital Cinema Summit ISE takes place today from 14:00-18:00 at the Hotel Okura. It’s a seamless user experience capable of providing the same look and feel regardless of what platform the content is delivered on.” With this increasingly data-centric approach, signage is now attracting companies with a big reputation for data management, such as Microsoft and Google, says Rotberg. “At the end of the day everything is moving towards ‘platform thinking’. It’s about who owns the customer, so we will see the big data companies such as Google and Microsoft moving into the DXP space and the systems integrators moving from having direct access to customers to the second tier, supplying their solutions to the big guys.” Rotberg adds that the summit will cover much more than highlighting the latest DXP thinking. Other topics will include best practice case studies, panel discussions, a market update with new numbers for the industry, plus a technology showcase of the latest in LED displays and digital projection. “Digital signage is increasingly also about the development of the back-end management systems needed to provide the connectivity and manage the data for the whole ecosystem, which really complement the core digital signage solutions.” Digital Signage Summit ISE, supported by Signage Solutions Partner NEC and Audio Partner Bose, takes place today at 09:00-13:00 at the Hotel Okura Wednesday 12 February ISE Daily 2020 21

Calling top technology integrators: The CEDIA Awards 2020 is accepting entries The entry system is now open for the 2020 CEDIA Awards programme. The awards, which spotlight the finest work the industry has to offer, are considered the premier prize for projects crafted by residential technology integrators. “The recognition winners and finalists receive from the process is priceless,” CEDIA senior vice president of industry engagement Giles Sutton said. CEDIA Award winners have been showcased in publications like The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The Financial Times and The Sunday Times, among others. This year, CEDIA is launching a new awards platform that streamlines the entry process. This new system walks entrants through each step of the submission, and project details can be entered in stages or all at once. Sutton said: “We are happy to adopt this new platform, which keeps the highquality and integrity of the CEDIA Awards criteria, but is just a lot more intuitive for users completing the entry.” Project categories include: Integrated Home; Media Room; Home Cinema; Showroom; Auto, Marine, or Aircraft; and Multiple Dwelling Unit Design. CEDIA members can submit projects in multiple categories, and judges will determine cost categories based on all completed entries. Entries will be categorised based on their region: Americas, EMEA or Asia-Pacific. New for 2020, CEDIA is also launching a category for projects produced for less than $25,000 or the equivalent in your local currency. Sutton explained: “Our new category highlighting projects under $25,000 has been developed through suggestions from our dedicated volunteers and we think it will boost inclusiveness and showcase the full scope of what CEDIA members can accomplish.” Finalists and winners will receive: •A CEDIA-created, individualised case study to use for their business marketing purposes. •R ecognition in a globally issued press release. •P rojects will be highlighted on the new CEDIA Awards website (cediaawards.org), the flagship CEDIA website (cedia.net) and CEDIA social media channels. •A uthorisation to use CEDIA Awards Finalist and Winner logos. •C EDIA Finder Service Profile recognition. Winners will also receive: •W inner’s trophy. •F eature in CEDIA E-Newsletter. 26 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

• Projects actively pitched to major media outlets by the CEDIA public relations team. • Printed copies of their case study. Entries from the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions are due by 23 March, while EMEA submissions close 20 April. Americas and Asia-Pacific finalists will be announced 8 June, while EMEA finalists will be announced the week of 29 June. Awards celebrations are as follows: • Americas winners will be announced at the CEDIA Awards and Leadership Conference on 22 July in Chicago. • Asia-Pacific winners will be announced at the CEDIA Awards event during the 2020 Integrate conference in Melbourne, which runs 19-21 August. • EMEA winners and winners of Global Awards will be announced at the CEDIA EMEA Awards event in London in the Autumn. To qualify for the 2020 programme, projects need to have been completed between March 2018 and March 2020. To apply for the 2020 CEDIA Awards, integrators should have documentation and project information on hand. More information on the programme, the entry process and its benefits is available at cedia.net/awards, or visit the CEDIA booth (1-E20) at ISE.

CEDIA Awards 2019 – winners’ testimonials OLIVER HALL, ULTAMATION “It’s funny how the excitement builds, slowly at first, as the awards get started, until the moment your category is announced and your heart starts racing. You see the amazing shortlist and think, ‘Oh well, we did well to get this far’. Then you have about 10 seconds of feeling a bit deflated, until they read out your name and the whole table explodes! Later on, after the elation has had a chance to die down, Stephen Nevison from Intuitive Homes and I always start planning for next year and what we can do better – so it’s not just vanity, I do think the CEDIA Awards really push the industry to raise the bar on what we do.” ANKUR BHATT, SOUND SENSE “Our field is all about the painful fine tuning of an exact and theoretical science to an abstract and creative unknown. This honour bestowed upon us by experts in the field helps pull us back to a familiar place to cherish with family and mentors momentarily before returning to the unknown. In the end, it’s like we tell our children: ‘when you are learning and enjoying, you are always a winner’. But it never hurts to have a few trophies as proof!” STEPHEN NEVISON, INTUITIVE HOMES “The event is one that we have been lucky enough to attend several times now and is the perfect celebration of all of the hard work that our industry puts in over the year. We left feeling delighted with our achievement and with added motivation to maintain the high bar set by CEDIA entrants, on our current and future projects.”

Training: essential for success Aristotle, 384-322 BC, said: “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” The essence of success in business is training, since its most positive benefit is better employees as well as a further development of their skills and techniques. Fostered by increasing complexity and dynamism in the world, as well as unprecedented technological development, it has never been more important to stay updated in order not to become victim to the economic ‘survival of the fittest’. Staying on top requires being updated regarding current developments and always thinking ahead about future customer needs. Many training opportunities: which is the right one? Particularly in the world of technologies, the future belongs to open technology. Most of the world’s population has had first-hand experience thanks to Google Android, which is currently dominating the worldwide market of smartphones. The same applies to the world of residential and commercial building control. For 30 years, KNX’s open technology has dominated the worldwide market for automation for applications such as lighting, HVAC, home appliances and so on. The market is currently supplied with more than 8,000 products from more than 500 manufacturers: open source, approved as US Standard (ANSI/ASHREA Standard 135) and accessible for all kinds of manufacturers, and all certified by the KNX Association. With the opportunity to develop tailor-made solutions for the worldwide market, the first and most sustainable choice should be open technology. How can you get started with KNX Training? As it’s the KNX Association’s mission to spread KNX all over the world, various KNX training opportunities have been developed, making this open technology more accessible to the worldwide community. Based on the long-standing experience of KNX in the worldwide field of residential and commercial building control, as well as the unique certification scheme for KNX Training Centres and trainees, high-quality training in more than 100 countries is guaranteed. In order that AV professionals can dive in, extend their knowledge or become highly expert with the technology, KNX Association has made available literature, webinars and online training. Online webinars Free of charge webinars, organised by KNX Association, are an extremely efficient way of acquiring initial knowledge of KNX via short online live presentations. Already attended by thousands of participants worldwide, KNX webinars cover a wide range of different topics related to residential and commercial building control. ‘KNX Basics’ is a perfect session for those new to KNX, helping them to get their first information on the system and the Engineering Tool Software (ETS), the commissioning tool for KNX. KNX brochures Another great resource for KNX newcomers are the KNX brochures, which can be obtained free from the KNX Download section of www.knx.org. • KNX Basics • KNX System Principles • ETS for Beginners KNX literature Used by certified KNX Training Centres and provided to developers, installers and users all around the globe, literature about KNX gives a very deep insight into the various aspects of KNX. Due to the worldwide usage of KNX, numerous books in various languages are available, explaining the essence of KNX residential and commercial automation, written by independent authors as well as by the KNX Association. 28 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

The most positive benefit of training is better employees, as well as further development of their skills and techniques

Another detailed and useful resource is the standardised KNX training documentation, used by certified KNX Training Centres. It deals with a range of topics for those studying for a KNX Certified Course, including: • For the KNX Basic Course • For the KNX Advance Course • For the KNX Tutor Course The ETS eCampus The ETS eCampus is a web-based learning platform, which is accessible to KNX newcomers, free of charge, to teach them about KNX technology, as well as the manufacturerindependent ETS. Designed to be taken as a two-hour course, complete with simulated exercises and videos, the ETS eCampus provides a great introduction to the basics of KNX and can be taken in step-by-step sections, which are each completed with a test. The ETS eCampus is accessible via the online portal: http://my.knx.org. KNX online training KNX online courses provided by KNX-certified Training Centres cover theoretical and – depending on the KNX training centre – practical components. In the theoretical sessions, learners will deal with topics such as ‘Telegram’, ‘Bus Devices’, ‘Installation’, ‘Topology’ and so on. In the practical sessions, students will learn how to program and commission an installation by means of ETS, which will involve hands-on experience with real KNX products. In this way, students have access to the course and its material at any time and in any location. For more information on KNX Online Training, feel free to send a request to KNX Association directly. KNX Virtual KNX Virtual is a Windows application representing a KNX installation; it is not a physical installation, but it behaves like one. The advantage is that no investment in hardware (such as KNX power supply, KNX/USB interface or KNX/IP interface, or KNX devices) needs to be made in order to test and play with KNX and ETS. Download it now in your MyKNX Account. KNX Certified Courses: on-site training (minimum duration 15 hours) A number of KNX Training Centres offer an on-site 15-hour practical course. This type of course is intended for those students who already have a sufficient amount of acquired KNX knowledge and experience, by either having studied KNX books or by having participated in KNX Online Training. The

student needs to pass the theoretical and practical exam with at least 60% of the marks. Once passed, the person may opt to be listed as a new KNX Partner. KNX Certified Courses: on-site training (minimum duration 30 hours) The majority of certified KNX Training Centres offer on-site training for both the theoretical and practical components of the course. Close interaction with the certified KNX Tutor has its advantages and will, ultimately, contribute to a deeper personal development of the student. Students can also profit from interaction with their fellow students. The minimum duration of the course is 30 hours, of which at least 50% will be dedicated to practical work. Since the student is making the commitment to attend typically five days of training, the requirement to pass the theoretical and practical examination is set at 50% of the marks. If passed, the person may opt to be listed as a new KNX Partner. All participants receive a voucher valid for an ETS Lite licence, and a voucher when upgrading this ETS Lite to an ETS Professional licence (with a higher reduction than those attending ETS eCampus). Benefits for participants In order to ease into working with KNX, in both professional and private life, KNX Association provides massive discounts on tools, which allows a flawless start with KNX. In a nutshell Training is essential to a company’s survival. As well as individual support, KNX Association is offering a broad range of training and studying opportunities. Open technologies are the most sustainable in the field of residential and commercial building control. In order to open this world to the masses, KNX Association has put a deep focus on training, so that everyone can benefit from the advantages provided by the worldwide open technology. Insight

Mapping the mainstream Projection mapping is becoming more popular thanks to innovations

INSIGHT in a number of AV technologies, as Rob Lane reports Projection mapping is increasingly moving into the mainstream. It’s no longer just the preserve of ‘guerrilla’ marketeers employing headline-grabbing PR stunts that, while always impressive, have become somewhat tired in the past few years. After all, there are only so many times one can get excited about a brand being beamed onto the outside of a church, no matter how clever the mapping process. Over the past couple of years mapping has broadened its appeal, being employed across a broader church of AV sectors (and not a mapped steeple in sight!). This popularisation is as much to do with the advancement of other complementary AV technologies as it has to mapping hardware and software itself. However, in the first instance, it is the advances in mapping technology innovations that have helped to overcome restrictions, with environments that would have previously been ruled out more easily utilised by mapping experts, and mapping onto moving targets now not just possible but highly effective. For marketing and PR agencies this has broadened the possibilities and opened things up to a wider client base; but other sectors are also buying into projection mapping as a tool for wow-factor user experiences. Motion capture and real-time tracking have helped to deliver more immersive mapping experiences to large audiences. And with a streamlining and improvement in mapping technology’s

efficiencies, costs have come down, helping to further broaden mapping’s appeal. The ability of mapping’s servers and software to deliver real-time content manipulation allows a combination with tracking technology (automapping using lasers and camera) to map dynamic content onto moving targets, such as a car rotating 360º. Other technologies are helping to further turbo-charge projection mapping as an experiential tool, with 3D scanning allowing for more accurate alignment and content creation. 3D design tools allow pre-visualisation and software packages to align multiple projectors using machine vision cameras at the click of a button. Developments in AR are allowing the production of true mixed reality mapping experiences, fusing physical and virtual content and creating dynamic digital canvases with personalised experiences fused on top of larger scale shared physical experiences. Robotics is also having a big influence. The integration of kinetic system controls – from lifting systems to production robots – allows complex mapping to be calculated live on a kinetic system. Real-time displays are linked to sensors and actuators in order to establish live systems. Size matters too. Experiences are now incorporating larger arrays of projectors alongside other display devices such

as LED panels and pixel-mapped lighting effects into the projection mapping ‘performance’. Lighting effects are a cost-effective method of expanding scale, pixel-mapped to extend the digital canvas. Projection lens evolution is creating faster, brighter, pixelrich images, and projectors with separate light sources are influencing quality and efficiency of mapping also. RGB and laser technologies are easier to maintain, more compact and more cost effective. Of course, in spite of recent innovations in projector brightness, projectors are still more suited to ambient light (hence why those churches are always lit up at night!), so LED is increasingly being used alongside projectors to complement and extend projection mapping’s usage, as well as its scale. To experience the latest in projection mapping, visit the Elicium which is being transformed by a spectacular projection mapped to the shape of the front facade. It is set to start at 17:00 today and will run until 22:00

Introducing the ControlCenter-IP: the outstanding flexibility of KVM-over-IPTM with the renowned functionality and reliability of the G&D matrix. 0 t ISE 202 Visit us a ebruary 11-14 F -R130 stand 10

It’s a combination that has no competition. We’ve taken the features of our classic ControlCenter series and integrated them into the KVM-over-IP™ matrix to achieve new levels of fl flexibility. exibility. With the ControlCenter-IP, you can operate even the largest installations since it uses standard IP structures instead of dedicated cabling. It supports all common video signals up to 4K@60Hz, using our own lossless video compression for maximum compatibility. And of course the ControlCenter-IP offers the peerless levels of usability, safety and reliability you would expect from G&D. The most comprehensive and complete KVM product range in the industry just stretched even further.

ExhibitorNews Truly integrated IP intercoms from 2N 2N Stand: 5-S135 Modular IP door station 2N IP Verso is an ideal intercom to be integrated with many systems and solutions, according to 2N, supporting home automation applications, property management platforms, VMS, access control, security and unified communication systems. It works as a camera and access reader all in one installation. Combining video management with access control, it offers better decision making for operators based on visual verification of incomers and more efficient work processes thanks to an integrated interface (Genetec and Milestone). It allows users to talk to visitors, observe them and open the door for them from a smart home panel (Control4, Savant, Crestron). Integration with property management software provides automatic synchronisation of the display phonebook when residents move in and out (Yardi). Unified communications is achieved thanks to 2N’s Verso flush frame 3M integration via the SIP display combo protocol with different IP PBX and cloud exchanges. Think of the intercoms as another video SIP phone for businesses. 2N was founded in 1991 in the Czech Republic and is reported to be the world’s largest manufacturer of IP intercoms. With subsidiaries in the US, UK, Germany, Italy and Australia, it has a distribution network all over the world. 2N sees the openness of its products as the key condition of success in today’s world of ‘connected systems’. Customers are no longer talking about specific products, but about complete solutions and, as a result, 2N offers many integration possibilities with a wide range of devices and third-party systems – all thanks to its support of protocols such as SIP, ONVIF S, RTSP and HTTP API.

All-in-one way to grow business in small spaces CRESTRON Stand: 2-C20 Plug-and-play DMPS Lite and DM Lite small room solutions from Crestron are on show at ISE 2020. DMPS Lite multisource-todisplay products give users a high-value all-in-one AV solution for classrooms, huddle rooms and small collaboration rooms. DMPS Lite expands user reach into spaces that require more than a DM Lite source-todisplay solution alone, but less than an all-in-one DMPS3 Series system. DMPS Lite products offer simple, repeatable configuration. They need only be designed once using Crestron AV Framework software, and then deployed at scale via the Crestron XiO Cloud IoT-based service. The result is a consistent UI and user experience on every system in every room, so anyone can easily use it. DMPS Lite products deliver key features and benefits, including standalone web configuration with auto-routing and display control, and the ability to upgrade and monitor via Crestron XiO Cloud service. They offer built-in 4K video

upscaling and downscaling, audio mixing and amplification, in addition to improved network connectivity for high-traffic networks. DM Lite products deliver a combination of low-cost, yet high performance, says the company. Users can mix-andmatch versatile DM Lite transmitters and receivers to create simple systems and support the signal extension needed for most spaces. They support switching and transport of 4K signals over standard Cat5e (on select models). Users can pair them based on form factor and the type of signals that need to be transmitted along with HDMI. DM Lite products are fully interoperable with DMPS Lite products. MONITOR AUDIO Stand: 5-R85

STEWART FILMSCREEN Stand: 1-F60

Monitor Audio has announced three new audio products, which it says are destined to refine and shape the audio world in 2020. It is previewing them for the first time at ISE. The sixth generation of the company’s Bronze series has undergone an upgrade in both performance and build quality. The new cabinet design features a separate contrasted baffle and has a sleek, modern form. Bronze’s new drivers have been intricately engineered to optimise the audio experience, and they pair with a tweeter, which boasts a carefully designed waveguide that integrates seamlessly into the architecture of the baffle. With the addition of a Dolby Atmos module, the new Bronze series provides a complete package for any music, gaming or movie enthusiast. The IMS-4 Music Streamer is the latest addition to Monitor Audio’s range of superior custom install solutions. Featuring BluOS, the IMS-4 can stream to up to four separate zones. Its BluOS Controller app offers true flexibility of operation, including streaming from music services, easy access to music libraries and voice control through a smart device. The new FIX-M speaker mount is designed for Monitor Audio’s middleweight bookshelf speakers. The mount provides a strong wall mount solution, which enables speakers to be placed in a huge variety of set positions. This allows pairs of speakers to be setup at matching angles on the wall and eliminates the possibility of bracket/ The sixth generation Bronze series is being demonstrated for the first time at ISE 2020 arm sag.

Making its first ISE appearance is the Balón UST projection screen, capable of rejecting high-ambient light. According to Stewart Filmscreen, the Balón UST delivers remarkable brightness and contrast when limited space requires the use of an ultra-short throw projector. The screen is offered in a 1.78 aspect ratio, with image diagonals up to 304.8cm. With this screen, the company claims, ambient light is not a problem and using a less expensive, lower lumen projector becomes a viable option. The Balón UST projection screen is designed for limited space deployment Also being showcased on the Stewart stand is the newly redesigned Luxus below-ceiling screen system. It is available in a number of case finishes that can be uniquely customised to match individual taste or to fit seamlessly into any venue. Audio key to virtual collaboration SHURE Stand: 3-B100 New research by Shure has revealed major trends in remote working and virtual meetings, from a wideranging study of AV users and buyers in organisations across various industries. From this, it’s clear that audio is key to virtual collaboration success. Frustrations related to audio issues include background noise, echoing, audio cutting out, not being able to hear other people and difficulty connecting. Even with advances in video technology, 81% of professionals admitted that audio quality has the biggest impact on efficient and effective virtual meetings. Without video, collaboration can still happen; without audio, collaboration stops. Professionals also agreed that audio was three times more important in larger conference rooms and executive boardrooms than home offices, which means maximising outcomes from larger meeting spaces requires everyone to be heard, not just those closest to a working microphone. The State of Virtual Meetings and The Future Workforce report is now available for download at effortless.shure. com.

Insight

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail Michael Garwood provides an overview of AV’s

INSIGHT growing influence on modern learning spaces Back in the early ’80s when I was at school, the extent of AV was little more than an old wooden-looking TV on wheels, a VHS player and a light switch. If you were lucky, maybe a slightly intimidating overhead projector and a set of special felt pens would make an appearance. Today, things have evolved to almost unprecedented levels. AV technologies, whether audio, visual or control, have brought, and continue to bring, true transformational change to the way lessons are taught and learnt, to the point where technology has become one of the most vital components in the modern classroom, both on and off-site. Technology investment in primary, secondary and particularly higher education is now staggering, bringing new opportunities across the entire spectrum; from manufacturers, integrators and the education facility itself, right down to the most important people of all, the students. In 2019, the total professional AV market was valued at a whopping $247 billion. By 2024, that figure will surpass $325 billion. Revenues for pro-AV products and solutions within education are expected to have topped nearly $20 billion worldwide in 2019 and grow 6% annually through to 2024 – making it the fastest-growing AV market. The opportunities have never been clearer or greater, but equally it has never been more important for education facilities

For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2020

and organisations to evolve to ensure expectations are met. In addition to these figures, the noises coming from these facilities are also positive. Research from AVIXA’s latest Market Opportunity Analysis Report (MOAR) shows that 36% of decision makers in education indicated that budgets for classroom improvements were poised to increase significantly. When it comes to implementing AV in classrooms, 82% said they believe AV can help teachers teach, while 73% said it increases student engagement. Sixty-one percent said AV in learning spaces boosts collaboration among students. Speaking to universities across the UK, it has become apparent that AV is playing an increasingly important role in helping people to decide where they wish to study or indeed teach. Continued investment is therefore vital; particularly when you consider university students in England now pay upwards of £9,200 per year for the privilege of studying for a degree. How does that look? The beauty of what makes the ‘AV in education’ market one of the most distinctive and interesting markets of all, is the sheer variation of how AV technology is used and deployed. When it comes to education, there simply isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach – particularly at the further and higher education levels – and students can make a choice on what best suits their needs and preferences. Isn’t that great? Perhaps equally as distinctive is the lack of secrecy

among AV professionals operating in the education space, openly sharing their ideas and best practices with one another, thanks to groups like the Learning and Teaching Spaces Managers Group and SCHOMS. This is all the more remarkable considering the level of competition at college/ university level, with more than 106 institutions recognised in the UK, 4,000 across Europe and 4,300 in the US. In the past 12 to 18 months, I’ve visited numerous universities across England; some old, and some so new the paint hadn’t even dried. The level of differentiation is quite striking. Some continue with a more traditional approach of using large, rising theatres with ceiling projectors and a lectern at the front. Some have replaced theatres entirely, preferring to use smaller rooms surrounded by digital displays while the tutor roams around with a connected laptop or tablet. Others have adopted a method where rooms have been replaced by open ‘learning spaces’ comprising little more than a few seats and a single display. One trend in particular, which is expected to continue to rise significantly in 2020 and beyond, is collaboration. Indeed, a number of major AV manufacturers here at ISE will be dedicating large parts of the show to announcing new interactive collaboration displays specifically for use in education. Instead of tutors simply dictating proceedings from the front, students are able to actively participate in the lesson and collaborate with each other by connecting their own device directly to the display, providing them with the perfect view at all times and the ability to manipulate and save documents from their seat. Equally, they’re able to physically and collectively participate, using their own hands or touchscreen pens thanks to advancements in multitouch technology. Doesn’t that sound more fun than being lectured to? Thanks to secure connectivity, you don’t necessarily even need to be in the room to participate, opening the door for longdistance remote learning and accessibility. Add in the opportunities around VR and… well, perhaps that’s a subject for another day. I almost wish I was back at school.

The multiple connectivity options for the Nexus audio network are being explored at ISE

Networking technology expands with IP options STAGE TEC Stand: 7-W194 Stage Tec is showcasing a number of new developments relating to its Nexus audio networking technology at ISE 2020. Previously designed exclusively for networking using a proprietary fibre optic cable protocol, Nexus can now also communicate with remote single or multiple base devices based on IP. As a result, bidirectional AES67 streams can be set up in which audio and control data are transmitted together. This feature is implemented with the Nexus XFIP and RIF67 interfaces, both of which have been equipped with the DirectOut AES67.IO module. With an XFIP or RIF67 interface, a network of up to eight Nexus Base Devices can be established. According to Stage Tec, this feature means that Nexus networks can be operated independently of proprietary cabling, enabling remote production and wide area networking via IP-based connectivity.

Empowering AV professionals’ transition to AV-over-IP with the industry’s broadest range of standalone NDI converters, Magewell is demonstrating the second NDI decoder device in its Pro Convert family. The low-latency Pro Convert for NDI-to-HDMI decoder transforms a live NDI stream into a high-quality HDMI output for connection to a monitor, projector or other baseband device. This simplifies the use of NewTek’s NDI media-over-IP technology in presentation and delivery applications such as digital signage, videowalls, image magnification, multi-site video distribution and long-distance, network-based media transport. Capable of decoding NDI streams up to 2160x1200 at 60fps with eight channels of audio for output over its HDMI 2.0 interface and leveraging built-in FPGA-based video processing, the device can also up-convert HD or 2K source streams to 4K for viewing on UHD displays. The plug-and-play decoder features DHCP-based network configuration and can detect the video and audio characteristics of the target display device via EDID metadata, automatically selecting optimal output parameters or providing the user with a range of compatible choices. The collection of acoustic solutions marks the start of a new creative paradigm

Acoustic solution based on biomimetics VICOUSTIC Stand: 5-V89 Acoustic treatment and sound isolation company Vicoustic is at ISE to showcase its new GEN_VMT, the Generative Collection. With a design concept developed by Digitalab, an atelier of award-winning designers, the new collection of acoustic solutions marks the beginning of a new creative paradigm, according to the company, inspired by maths, geometry and biomimetics. According to the company, it is creating generative tiles, panels and acoustic clouds that combine sustainability, innovation and aesthetics. The first set of solutions results from geometric research in the field of pentagonal tiling, in which each individual piece is in the shape of a pentagon. In this exploratory work, Vicoustic says it was looking for a shape grammar that would allow the generation of endless combinations of single or double main shapes. The GEN_VMT acoustic panels are part of the VMT (Virtual Material Technology) Line, a collection of acoustic solutions made from VicPET Wool, a non-woven textile said to have superb acoustic performance and predominantly made from recycled plastic bottles. This material can now be found in acoustic panels and clouds, such as Flat Panel VMT, ViClouds VMT, VicWallpaper, VicOffice and Vixagon.

ActiveCool, launched to keep powerful laser projectors cool

Digital projector enclosure manufacturer Tempest is launching ActiveCool, a closedloop cooling system for larger outdoor enclosures to house powerful laser projectors with thermal dissipation from 12,00015,000btu (British thermal unit). The technology, created with a US-based cooler manufacturer partner, ensures projector investments are protected and able to deliver continued optimum performance. The ActiveCool unit is installed next to the enclosure and continuously cools to a pre-set temperature while the projector is active, or if the enclosure heats up during the day. Tim Burnham, president, Tempest, said: “Today’s highpower laser projectors are wonderfully efficient, but they are also a lot more temperaturesensitive than their lamp-based predecessors. In higher ambient temperatures it may be necessary to reduce light output to preserve laser engine life, and colour balance may be affected by temperature fluctuations – not good. With ActiveCool, this potentially hugely costly issue is solved, with the minimum of fuss for the user.” ActiveCool is designed to work in conjunction with Tempest’s Cyclone outdoor enclosure and is available from the first quarter of 2020.

Martin Barbour Product manager, Q-SYS Platform and Cloud Software, QSC

Why go native? In recent years, the term ‘native’ has entered the lexicon of the AV industry as the ultimate level of platform integration, and is closely correlated with providing the highest level of customer experience. True ‘native’ solutions provide additional value beyond just being integrated. Of course, we expect a native solution to work seamlessly together across the signal chain (which means less time creating those integration points). But, you should also expect that by combining all of these native pieces they will maximise the performance and value of the greater platform. A native solution also infers that its manufacturer has fully vetted each component in the portfolio and knows precisely how it performs in the wild, knows its limits, and knows how to troubleshoot the entire system. If you combine a given manufacturer’s processor with non-native amplifiers (for example), you are integrating a device that is untested and unsupported by the processor’s manufacturer. Aside from the added installation time (and cost!), there’s no guarantee the non-native solution will work the way you expect it to. And, if that device fails, you might spend more time troubleshooting and potentially more time reintegrating the device, leading to much higher costs over the lifetime of the system. While no system is completely bulletproof, a native solution means that there is a single source to turn to when issues arise. It means simpler integration, expedited deployment and an overall better performance for your customers. So next time you are designing an AV&C system, it’s time to go native!

By using IP Former in place of standard transformers, integrators can continue to use their preferred loudspeaker brands and models while bringing them into the IP domain. Existing installations can similarly be retrofitted with IP capabilities by replacing their transformers with IP Former units. Meanwhile, IP Former’s mounting and connection 60 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

compatibility with standard 70V and 100V transformers enables OEMs to incorporate the Barix module without changes to their manufacturing processes. Based on Barix’s IPAM 400 IP Audio Module, IP Former is built with the latest IP and IT security standards in mind. PoE minimises cabling and simplifies installation by eliminating the need for plugging into a power outlet. Flexibly supporting applications from background music and invenue announcements to paging and emergency warning systems, IP Former decodes audio streams delivered via HTTP, RTP or UDP in codec formats including PCM, AACplus, MP3, Opus, G.711 and G.722. Barix’s FLEXA customisation layer enables integrators and manufacturers to deploy their own custom programmes on IP Former. It also supports SIP negotiation for use with VoIP phone systems and is compatible with InformaCast and Syn-Apps mass-notification platforms.

GLENSOUND Stand: 5-R131 With Dante and AES67 audio networks proliferating, exhibitor Glensound identified an opportunity in the market and developed the Divine network audio speaker. A single network cable connection provides power and four audio channels to the Divine, while 18 separate configurable parameters that are accessed from a rear screen allow users to set the Tap into AoIP: the Divine’s Divine to their preferred operational volume control goes all the mode. way up to 11 Routing is managed by the Dante Controller application, allowing any of four different sources on a Dante network to be routed to the Divine. Dante Controller is also used to set AES67 mode if required. The four inputs available on the Divine are selectable from the front individually, in pairs, or mixed together. Any input can be disabled if required. The key feature of the Divine, according to Glensound, is that any input can be set to be an interrupt of another, with various dim levels. For example, if the Divine is used in a dressing room in a theatre, input 1 could be the show feed, with input 2 set as the interrupt for the stage manager. Different EQ presets are available along with an LF cut, and gain boost from 0 to 24dB. For additional clarity on voice material, a band pass filter is available. 14:00 On-Prem or Cloud: Why should you have to choose? speaker: Nico Cormier, Pexip Over the past decade, organisations around the world have shifted to cloud computing for the cost benefits, scalability and flexibility it provides. In moving to the cloud, however, these organisations lose a key benefit that on-premise software installations provide: control. But what if that wasn’t the case? What if organisations could have all the benefits of cloud while maintaining control over their data and infrastructure? This session will provide an overview of a new computing model that brings together the best of both worlds. Attendees will learn why today’s approach to hybrid compute is too complex and doesn’t deliver on its promise.

Focus on invisible speakers STEALTH ACOUSTICS Stand: 5-R96 In addition to launching its new StingRay-83 outdoor speaker, Stealth Acoustics is showcasing its LRx83 and LRx85 ‘invisible’ speakers. Incorporating advanced carbon fibre materials, new lamination processes and enhanced driver sets, the company claims the speakers offer impeccable audio performance and the aesthetic benefits that only true invisibility can offer. The two-panel system, which replaces a segment of a flat wall or ceiling with a paintable, nonpenetrable flat front speaker system, incorporates five mid-range/high frequency drivers mounted in a dual-D’Appolito alignment. Stealth Acoustics says this offers a noticeable improvement in left/right panoramas and depth of sound stage. A number of products from the LRg family of invisible loudspeakers are also on show in the listening area, including the LR6g, SLR8g, LR8g and LR3g models. These speakers are described by the company as offering extremely broad coverage and ultra-smooth extended frequency response. Stealth Acoustics’ B22g and B30g invisible subwoofers are also on display for visitors to experience. According to the company, these deliver bold bass output for extra impact with ‘zero aesthetic pollution’, providing exceptional bass and room coverage with frequencies extending as low as 20Hz.

Three CM Series 70V amplifiers – 4-channel, 3-channel and 2-channel – featuring Dante digital audio networking capability are being launched by AudioControl at ISE. Each amplifier delivers 750W per channel (WPC) in 70/100V mode, 500 WPC at 8 Ohms (stereo or mono output) and 750 WPC at 2 or 4 Ohms, and 1,500W bridged into either a 70/100V and 8- or 4-Ohm load. Each amplifier offers eight analogue inputs (four stereo) plus four digital stereo inputs – digital coax and optical. The four outputs can be individually controlled or controlled as two stereo pairs, which AudioControl says gives integrators the system configuration flexibility they need to accommodate any system architecture. According to the company, CM Series amplifiers are unique in the realm of 70V options because they offer the DSP control and signal matrixing capabilities developed by AudioControl for its Director Series amplifiers. These features, the company says, enable integrators to precisely tailor the sound by zone to any environment – houses of worship, boardrooms, hospitality, collaboration suites, residential projects and more. For maximum efficiency, system set-up and diagnostics can be managed remotely via an IP web-based browser or app.

An LED video processor, the LS-VXP1000, is being showcased on the Listen Vision stand. With up to eight inputs, the processor can play four images simultaneously. In addition, the processor supports RGBCMY colour calibration to 4 million pixels and can rotate or flip images as required. The rapid development of the mobile internet means that end users often want to change or update LED display content from remote locations and in different time zones. Listen Vision’s LED video processor and full colour controller card integrates with the cloud platform, enabling the LED screens associated to the controller to be edited or updated via either a mobile phone app or internet access. Specialising in the manufacture of LED display control systems, Listen Vision concentrates its business on the research and development of video processors and professional display solutions as well as the production of core spare parts.

The new amplifier range comprises 2-, 3- and 4-channel versions

Insight

AV-over-IP: challenges, opportunities and the unreachable mainstream AV-over-IP (AVoIP) solutions are on the rise across a INSIGHT Low-latency range of key verticals, presenting clear advantages over competing technologies. However, the technology has yet to achieve mass-market acceptance. Adam Cox, senior analyst at Futuresource Consulting, explores some of the challenges and takes us through the detail

AVoIP has certainly shown strong volume growth over recent years. In 2018, shipments of encoders and decoders were up 69% year-on-year, followed by another strong performance last year, with growth of 42% expected once figures are finalised. However, despite the activity, and a continued positive outlook for the market, AVoIP has still not achieved widescale adoption. Due to a range of ongoing issues, there is little to suggest it poses a threat to existing extension technologies in lowlatency professional AV segments in the short term. Factors preventing wider uptake include its price point still being a little high for the market, a lack of networking expertise in the target industries and an underlying reluctance from channel partners to adopt IP. There’s no doubt that volumes are coming through, with vendors reporting significant growth, but at a lower rate than expected. In short, the market is still in its early stages, with many end users and channel partners unprepared to wholly adopt IP and replace existing non-IP extension deployments.

1GB installations continue to dominate, with 10GB solutions struggling to find much of a foothold, as market leaders Harman and Crestron have yet to invest in 10GB. As a result, the majority of key installations continue to be based on 1GB products. Futuresource figures show that 1GB accounted for 86% of all shipments in 2019. However, as Extron has now entered the market, offering both 1GB and 10GB solutions, competition in this segment is expected to grow significantly. Futuresource also expects Extron’s involvement to bring increasing awareness and legitimacy to 10GB solutions, though delays with availability have meant a significant impact on overall adoption has yet to be seen. The US represents the single largest opportunity for both 1GB and 10GB solutions, with many brands located in the region and strong volumes being distributed across most verticals. The Middle East has seen some largescale IP deployments in the oil and gas segment, whereas China has rapidly adopted AVoIP solutions across the board. General attitudes to AVoIP are less dismissive there and, with the availability of locally produced solutions,

ProductShowcase

the market continues to grow. As in the US, leisure and entertainment is a strong market, as well as the education and corporate verticals. Looking to Europe, the UK and France remain the largest markets in the region, with early demand seen in the retail, corporate and higher education markets. Although the uptake of 10GB solutions in mainstream applications has been slow, demand from high-end critical imaging and niche applications like esports has been seen. Strong development is also apparent in the medical and residential sectors, but the bulk of the AVoIP market remains in corporate, education and entertainment applications where 1GB solutions maintain a significant share. In fact, the corporate vertical is key to low-latency AVoIP growth. Businesses are adopting innovative video distribution techniques across meeting rooms and between premises. Despite ongoing threats from the growth of unified communications and collaboration technologies, volumes sold into corporates have grown almost 60% yearon-year from 2018 to 2019, and now account for 30% of total AVoIP encoder/decoder volumes. Where IP solutions are being adopted, they are typically being used to transport digital signage content to meeting rooms or other communal spaces. They are also being used as component parts of hybrid deployments, where content is distributed between rooms over IP and distributed inroom by baseband solutions. In addition to the corporate vertical, the higher education market is also a strong driver of AVoIP adoption. The growth in volumes is not only associated with the high demand for video distribution across campuses, but also higher education’s increasing need for interactivity and bidirectional communication between multiple spaces on campus and beyond. The number and type of inputs required within and between rooms also varies significantly, making IP the most desirable solution. In addition, network backbones are typically more advanced, with IT managers growing increasingly receptive to IP technologies. Looking ahead, Futuresource forecasts indicate that global shipments of AVoIP encoders and decoders will rise to more than 1 million units shipped in 2023, representing a 30% CAGR throughout the forecast period. Although AVoIP still lurks beyond the mainstream, the future for this technology remains secure.

Interview

CEDIA Stand: 1-E10, 1-E20

Striving for excellence Q&A

Tabatha O’Connor, CEDIA’s global president & CEO, discusses three decades of growth at the association and highlights what’s on offer as part of its extensive professional development offering at ISE 2020. Jo Ruddock finds out more

CEDIA celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2019. How has membership has changed over the past three decades? Thirty years ago, CEDIA was founded by a group of technology enthusiasts and thought leaders as the connection point for members to share their passion, find resources to help them grow, and contribute to the outlook for the future of the industry. Today, CEDIA continues to grow a strong and global affiliation, now with over 40,000 industry professionals from over 3,900 member companies worldwide. Our reach has massively increased from the original list of founding members. Over the years, we have seen more and more people becoming part of our market from both a home technology integrator aspect and the manufacturer side of things, and we expect this to continue in the years to come. In the EMEA region, we have seen exponential growth in our membership, as we reached 1,000 members in 2019. In India in particular, we saw a 28% increase in CEDIA member companies, and we now have members from 79 countries worldwide. With the launch of our Member of Excellence programme too, we are making it easier for our members to stand out from the crowd. Globally, we already have over 25 CEDIA Advanced Members and Members of Excellence and expect many more to join this elite group in 2020. What are your goals for the organisation over the next 12 months? We’re now more than half-way through our three-year strategic plan, which was developed to prioritise key areas of development for the association. We’ve already made significant progress in the areas of education, workforce development, and deeper engagement and partnership with the design and build community. In 2020, we’re set to continue this even further. In terms of education, we’ll be bringing our Tech Summits to over 20 locations globally. The Tech Summits deliver practical education and a valuable networking platform for all involved in the industry. CEDIA’s in-person and online industry training and certification offerings will also expand, not only in terms of coursework, but also in terms of the ways that technology integrators can interact with CEDIA and engage in training opportunities. 2020 is set to see even more international training take place, beginning here at ISE. When it comes to workforce development, our new Smart Home Technician apprenticeship standard was designed to encourage young professionals into the industry. Now that it has received approval and is ready for delivery, our plan is to raise awareness of this apprenticeship standard among education providers. Once there are apprenticeships based on the scheme on offer, integrator companies will be able to apply and access the funding to employ one of these apprentices, giving young minds the chance to explore the world of integration. We’re also committed to growing the profile of CEDIA members among the design community. In 2019, we launched a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training course for design and build professionals on Designing Home Cinemas and Media Rooms, tailored to help architects, interior designers and property developers understand how to help clients choose and specify rooms, as well as the design principles needed for a dedicated entertainment space. With new CPD material set for 2020, we have a lot to look forward to. CEDIA is hosting two new events at this year’s show – the Cybersecurity Workshop and Design & Build conference. What made you focus on these areas? In the age of the Internet of Things, residential networks and connected devices have a greater potential to be exploited. We see this as a key area for our members, which is why we hosted our Cybersecurity Workshop to help integrators deal 78 ISE Daily 2020 Wednesday 12 February

78_ISE08.BackPageCediaJMcKWWPB.indd 78

with the growing proliferation of threats in this space. The workshop provided an in-depth look at all aspects of network security and privacy, covering a variety of topics including awareness of the network, network infrastructure and endpoints, and remote monitoring. It was hosted by Jeff Sonnleitner, a professional network and security instructor with over 35 years’ experience. With a mix of both immersive and collaborative sessions, the workshop was designed to help attendees learn how to ensure systems are implemented securely and ensure customer expectations are managed. At ISE 2020, we also wanted to deliver a dedicated conference for the design and build community for the first time. Taking place at the Hotel Okura tomorrow, this new conference will provide a platform for collaboration between our members and the wider design community. It will be mutually beneficial for both parties, with ample opportunity for integrators and design professionals to learn, share knowledge and network throughout the day. You’ve brought members of the British Institute of Interior Design to ISE for the first time as part of the Special Interest Groups initiative. What do you hope they’ll get out of the show? Home technology is becoming increasingly popular in new residential schemes and major renovations, so design and build professionals need to be able to discuss the benefits, the functions and the aesthetics of home technology with their clients. We acknowledge the importance of collaboration between our members and this community, so we invited members of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) to be an integral part of it. The Design & Build Conference is designed to provide interior designers with an understanding of the latest technology, and how it can be seamlessly integrated into any interior design scheme. At the same time, it will raise the profile of CEDIA members among interior designers, architects, specifiers and other design professionals to help build their business on strong foundations for the future. What trends and technologies do you think will shape the home technology industry over the next few years? Our industry is poised for significant opportunities in the years ahead, driven primarily by technology and market innovation. The results of our 2019 UK Size and Scope survey provided extensive insight into the UK home technology market. We’re seeing substantial growth in the wellness and sustainability movement, with more products and technologies on offer that ultimately make us feel happier in the home. ‘Biophilia’ has been an incredibly hot topic over the past 18 months and I expect that this will be an overarching concept at ISE and throughout 2020. Aside from the wellness movement, the survey highlighted that the popularisation of voice control installations has continued with voice control and voice-enabled speakers now included in a quarter of projects. With the likes of Amazon Alexa and Google Home now household names, it won’t be long before AI becomes increasingly significant in this space, allowing us to interact in a way previously not possible. The results also showed that the volume of projects in the home technology market is growing, with home cinema installs increasing 9%. What we’re seeing more of, however, is this space being used as a dedicated gaming space rather than just for watching movies. Gaming is set to have a big impact on the industry in the years ahead, and I expect we’ll begin to see that trend emerge at ISE. What emerging technologies do you think your members need to be most aware of moving forward? Virtual reality (VR) has become an increasingly important tool for technology integrators. It can be used to clearly show

prospective customers what the finished project looks like, and supports the growing number of software tools designed to help in the creation of professional, consistent installations. We’ve already seen some of our members using the technology – it’s proving successful and we encourage more to get on board. We even have a simple version available as part of The CEDIA Designer software so clients can see the finished media room. To learn more about emerging technologies, ISE is the perfect destination. CEDIA provides an extensive training programme that is relevant to integrators working in the home technology market, with over 40 courses available. Within this programme, we offer a range of business and technical training classes that are valuable to all visitors with great insights and advice on future developments. What are the biggest challenges facing the residential sector and how is CEDIA addressing these? The technology industry is incredibly fast paced. This provides a huge challenge for technology integrators to stay ahead of developments and make sure that they are equipped to offer a professional service to their clients. As part of our commitment to the industry, we are continually updating our education offering to technology integrators worldwide, in order to help businesses succeed. CEDIA’s education programme at ISE, which this year is powered by KNX, is a great starting point to help delegates achieve this. These sessions put great emphasis on business and technical training and, with global industry experts presenting these courses, attendees will walk away with insights, advice and increased knowledge on important industry topics. As well as this, we strive to ensure the standard of installation remains high among those working in the profession. Our annual CEDIA Awards honours the best of the best and pushes integrators to deliver excellence in their field. How is CEDIA helping to promote the industry as a potential career for young people and will this be a focus going forward? We’re dedicated to raising awareness of our industry as a career opportunity among jobseekers, it’s another aspect of our three-year strategic plan. As part of this initiative, we’ve been busy developing the Smart Home Technician Apprenticeship standard, which will put more control in the hands of employers, ensure that apprentices are qualifying with the right skills and knowledge, and address skills shortages facing the industry, as well as attracting new prospective professionals. At ISE this year, CEDIA and AVIXA are working together to bring a number of students from various universities to the show as part of the AV Career Day which takes place tomorrow, to give young people the opportunity to explore careers in this exciting industry. We invite anyone to enjoy our hospitality on the CEDIA stand (1-E20) – meet CEDIA staff and fellow members to find out much more about CEDIA and the work we’re doing to support industry growth.
