Innovation is all in the game
By Adrian Pennington
Most people know Epic’s name because of games like Fortnite or the Unreal games engine that drives it and virtual production in blockbusters such as Dune, but its innovation and influence spans far and wide.
“We’re more than just a games company,” declared BK Johannessen, business director for broadcast and live events, Epic Games. “Unreal Engine has broad adoption across industries from architecture to live events, training and simulation, manufacturing to advertising and beyond.”
Giving the ISE 2023 opening keynote, Johannessen explained how Unreal Engine was pushing the boundaries of content and experiences. More than half of new video games use Unreal Engine, and Fortnite alone supports 350 million players worldwide. Because of its success on the games side, Johannessen said Epic makes everything it builds available for free.
“We give out the source code of our entire product. Anyone can download it and modify it to their needs. It’s also important that people can add things on top of it. There are many vendors who would like to integrate a real-time engine into their product to build industry

Stephen Nuttall to explore America’s Cup live broadcasting challenges
By David Davies
Innovation is all in the game
(continued from front cover)
Stephen Nuttall, head of television at the America’s Cup, is presenting a keynote on the challenges of live broadcasting the world’s most established sailing competition, at 17:30 today.
Taking place in Conference Suite CC5.1, the session, entitled How Technology Enables the Stories of the America’s Cup, will provide an opportunity to find out how the production team approaches planning, filming, editing and broadcasting from the surface of the sea – often in extreme weather conditions. As well as discussing the stringent requirements for accuracy in terms of providing measurements for the competition’s umpires, Nuttall will explore the innovative technologies and collaborative effort involved in bringing the event to a global audience.
Nuttall, whose three-decade career in sports and media has included senior roles at Google/YouTube and Sky, will be speaking ahead of the 37th America’s Cup regatta, which will take place in Barcelona from August to October 2024.
specific use cases. I don’t think it will be long before that happens in AV.”
“Why do we do this? Because we’re makers, developers, engineers and artists just like you,” he said. “Being able to train all your people on one tool is a Holy Grail for content producers. We believe people should have the freedom to create, play and learn in more connected and meaningful ways. That extends to enabling your success over monetisation.”
For instance, MetaHuman Creator can be used to build high-fidelity digital characters from scratch. Johannessen said:
“You can populate a background scene with a big crowd of MetaHumans, or make a MetaHuman your centre-stage star.”
He also pointed to the free training on offer from Epic “as essential to your success” with Unreal Engine.
“I am really happy to be able to announce here today at ISE 2023 that Final Pixel, a long-term partner of Epic, will offer the first masterclass focused on virtual production for broadcast and live.”
He added: “We are excited to show our partners at the ISE show all the things Unreal can do. That’s why training is core for us.”

Coda Audio | Stand: 7G825/ Audio Demo Room E4
Jean-Michel Jarre invites the audience inside the music
Electronic music superstar Jean-Michel Jarre found Space at ISE with Coda Audio’s new concept in installation audio, presenting an immersive demo of his ground-breaking 3D audio composition Oxymore Space by Coda comprises 70mmdeep speaker units and acoustic panels which can be used to define any acoustic environment. The demo used 32 invisible immersive speakers and 101sqm of acoustical treatment, including 264 absorbers and 16 diffusers, covered in artworks by French abstract painter Eric Decasto.
Jarre said: “We have a two-dimensional relationship with recorded sound, but stereo doesn’t exist in nature. It is the environment which creates perspective, and technology now allows us to create music like we experience sound in our everyday life.
“This product enabled me to invite the audience inside the music. What we are doing today with Space by Coda is making the technique invisible and using the technology to improve the emotions I want to share.
“Because the technology is invisible you
forget you are inside the music; your ears are opening your eyes. This is what makes this product unique: you enter a room, and you don’t see any speakers; the experience has a magical and poetic aspect to it.
“Having spent decades with heavy PA systems which give the sense of power, we are changing our relationship with the environment. Less is more. This whole project is in phase with that future.
“It’s not just a product, it’s much more than that.”

A smarter approach to smart buildings
By Anne Morris
Erik Ubels, senior consultant at MetisReal, said the smart building industry is very fragmented and needs to “start to realise that this is the reality out there” in order to bring about change.
“The technology is there,” he insisted, citing DC power and Power over Ethernet among other capabilities, as well as what he sees as the requirement
for a single IP network inside the whole building. A key problem is a lack of co-ordination among those engaged in installing equipment and technology in buildings.
Ubels was taking part in the keynote panel of the Smart Building Conference on Tuesday. In a separate talk he also outlined how he challenges the traditional approach to smart buildings, and described how a lifecycle management model is required to
Virtual production everywhere
By Adrian Pennington
Virtual production will be increasingly used for all high-end visual communication, according to Marcus Brodersen, CEO of graphics software company Pixotope.
“VP will be ubiquitous,” he told ISE’s Content Production & Distribution Summit.
“The differences between broadcast, film, live, AV and game production is starting to be less important than the commonalities.”
To underline the point, Brodersen was joined on stage by Stephan Ukas-Bradley, VP solutions, Americas, ARRI, and Stacia Pfeiffer, VP producer, Lux Machina.
“Virtual production will eventually be indistinguishable from live production,” Brodersen claimed.
The benefits of VP are available now for every kind of high-end visual communication, he said. For instance, VP can be programmatically controlled; “something possible with online media but
less so with traditionally produced content”.
“All video-based content will eventually have the visual impact of high-end feature films combined with the connected and scalable nature of online content and the immersive and social experience of video games,” added Brodersen.
Meanwhile, Spanish media giant Mediapro Group chose ISE 2023 to announce a major €3 million investment in virtual production.
Tatxo Benet, managing partner, Mediapro, told attendees: “Virtual production is here to stay and is already revolutionising the AV sector. As a traditional broadcaster we were the original audiovisual company. Now, banks, theatres, schools, automotive; everyone is becoming an AV company.”
With an eye on producing more and more content using virtual production techniques, Benet announced that Mediapro will open four new studios over the next three years in Barcelona, Madrid,
ensure all aspects of a sustainable building are taken into account from the outset.
Fellow panellist Claire Penny, director of global partnerships at Invicara, noted that people are starting to wake up to the digital twin, “and not digital twin as a fancy 3D model they can spin around, but something they can actually compose and tailor to their needs”.
Palle Dinesen, CEO and co-founder of Ubiqisense, also observed that we are “only just starting to scratch the surface of smart buildings”.
Future developments will likely focus more on how buildings should cater to the people who actually use them, he added. This has become especially important now that hybrid working patterns are increasingly being adopted by companies and their employees.
“Companies are realising that they have to do something to really cater more to the needs of the users of the buildings. We can’t do things the way we did before,” Dinesen said.
Bob Snyder, content chair and editorin-chief of Channel Media, added: “The best is yet to come in how specific we can get it down to the individuals and their job roles in the companies, and what we can do to collect the data that we need to make intelligent decisions.”
New York and Miami. Each will combine large LED walls with green screen facilities.
“There is no broadcast, only content and eyes, and money,” Benet said. “The AV sector will be huge in the future because it will be in every big company in the world.”

Amanda Wildman, owner at TruMedia, said working with design and build professionals is “super important” because they are “in on the project so early. And, of course, we all want to be in earlier on the project”. She was speaking during a session entitled Working with Other Trades on the CEDIA Smart Home Technology Stage on Tuesday.
Abby Fox, business development manager at LC-AV, agreed that many architects and interior designers “don't necessarily have a great understanding of what we do”, but in time can become great advocates of smart home technology, which in turn helps drive industry growth.

Embracing the hybrid work community
By Anne Morris
The future of live events is immersive and interactive, according to experts convened by AVIXA.
“We are experiencing a real-time revolution,” said Will Case, director of innovation, Creative Technology, speaking at Ask the Experts: Where to start with immersive experiences? an AVIXA Xchange Live session.
Stacia Pfeiffer, virtual production supervisor at Lux Machina, identified the increasing prevalence of branching narratives whether on Netflix or at a live event. “In this way, the audience becomes a player in the story. As creators, we can start to consider our audience more of a character and sometimes a protagonist.”
Sarah Cox, founder, Neutral Human, cited ABBA Voyage as a prime example of what to expect from future hybrid events. “As more venues contain all the infrastructure necessary to digitise the audience experience they can start to offer [those tools] for others to create blended experiences in a more cost-effective way,” she said.
During her ISE Tech Talk, Julie Crawford, conferencing technology partnerships at Shure, said AV technology is essential to ensure that the hybrid work experience is more than just a workspace but becomes a community that is inclusive of all the different people involved, wherever they are.
“In order to start creating that community, there are three very basic needs and goals for every hybrid meeting participant,” said Crawford.
She listed the three requirements as audio (hear and be heard), combining audio and video (to be seen and heard), and “efficient and reliable collaboration”.
The ultimate objective, she said, is to ensure that people are so confident in the technology that they don’t even realise it is there. “Participants need to feel confident that technology is not going to slow down the main function of the meeting,” she added.
“Be intentionally inclusive,” Crawford urged. “We all have our own interpretations of how we can be more inclusive and understanding of others.”

Kinetic interactivity goes Pi shaped
Modulo Pi has introduced a new version of its flagship media server, Modulo Kinetic V5, for interactive experiences.
Modulo Kinetic is a fully-integrated media server designed to be reliable across the complete workflow. Its real-time timelines, embedded live mixer, 3D engine and show control tools are accessed from a single environment. As a scalable platform, it relies on Kinetic Designer, an intuitive user interface with dedicated workstation, connected to one or several V-Node servers.
Version 5 promises to “pave the way for engaging interactive experiences both in permanent installations and live events”, with no coding needed.
“While the demand for interactive experiences is significantly growing, their creation and implementation often seemed over-complicated and based on costly custom developments,” said Yannick Kohn, founder and CEO of Modulo Pi. “Based on this observation, we’ve upgraded Modulo Kinetic with new features to provide a unified, yet versatile solution tailored for interactive experiences.”
V5 now offers interactivity through the manipulation of physical sensors or by touchless detection and tracking, alongside the capability to interact with video, audio, lights, generative content or machinery. It also supports a large array of sensors and control systems. DAVID FOX www.modulo-pi.com

How to ‘smartify’ every home
Smart homes and smart buildings are important components for meeting the increased requirements for energy and resource efficiency, building operation and user comfort. According to Jung, its Home system could be the “missing link” between classic installations and smart home solutions. With it, Jung claims buildings can be “smartified” completely, in parts or step-by-step.
The system is based on the conventional European 230V domestic installation. From the power socket with an energy measurement function to the room thermostat, all the components communicate wirelessly with each other via the Bluetooth Mesh radio standard.
Jung says that smart technology for building control should be understood as part of the interior design, as the
possibilities and the requirements are as diverse as the living situations and personal wishes of the users themselves. The company already offers various solutions for equipping smart buildings, such as the LB-Management system. Users can choose different degrees of automation. Jung Home now complements such smart home equipment with a “simple and scalable version that can grow and

Industry-first USB test solution
A USB cable test (UCT) module is being launched at ISE by MSolutions. The UCT is claimed as the AV industry’s first solution for qualifying today’s wealth of USB cables, signal types and connectivity options. It also helps users understand the power consumption of a USB device in relation to the host, as well as bandwidth, data speeds and the presence of specific wires across the cable that match varied USB specifications.
The UCT module arrives on the market at a time of need for installers and tech managers tasked with modernising meeting and learning spaces. Modernising these spaces means an increased reliance on the USB transmission of AV signals, which also raises compliancy
issues between transmitting and receiving devices.
The UCT removes the mystery of which cables are compatible between cameras, extenders and displays or computers by identifying what USB signal types the cable can pass. The tester will also identify and qualify the USB version that the cable is specified to, which is often the root of compatibility issues. ADRIAN PENNINGTON

Explore new approaches to learning and student support at the Education Technology Summit
Technology is evolving to support learning in an ever-changing and often challenging global environment. Today’s Education Technology Summit will bring together leaders and innovators from across the edtech landscape to discuss where AV technology fits into this new world of learning.
Chaired by Gill Ferrell, consultant at 1EdTech and EUNIS, the summit will discuss key topics including digital transformation, inclusive learning and the environmental implications of our digital choices.
Speakers include Angeliki Agorogianni, vice technical manager for services, IT manager at Aristotle University Thessaloniki; Piet van der Zanden, education expert AV-IT in learning spaces at TU-Delft; and Paul Bailey, head of codesign at Jisc. Bailey is currently exploring the future of assessment, the use of digital to transform practice, and the impact of climate change on education.
He said: “Tackling the climate emergency is a priority for Jisc. We are supporting educational institutions to understand and address the carbon footprint of the digital technologies they use in learning and teaching, whether that’s related to data storage, procurement, the sustainability of equipment or the videoconferencing tools we use to work remotely.”
Prepare for the future of smart home integration
CEDIA’s Smart Home Technology Conference continues today with business-focused courses covering topics such as social media marketing and managing subcontractors, and
Other must-see sessions include a keynote from Jo-An Kamp, a lecturer, researcher and co-ordinator at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. She will discuss techno-ethics and show how an inclusive approach can help us to make better design decisions. The session will include practical guidance for attendees to take away.
Kamp said: “I hope to raise awareness about the importance of these issues and to make people think. I’m not somebody who wants to halt innovation, but I think we really need to guide technology development in a good and practical sense. Not everything that is possible should be launched. I’m not a technical pessimist but I’m not a total optimist either. Technology can be part of the problem but also part of the solution.”
In addition, ‘Learning in the Metaverse’ will see Martion López Nores, co-ordinator of rurALLURE H2020, University of Vigo, and Thierry Koscielniak, chief digital office, CNAM, discuss the potential opportunities and risks of teaching and learning in the next-generation digital universe known as the metaverse.

CEDIA: Legitimising quality system performance
The recommended practice for the design of performance residential AV spaces is changing, and it’s changing dramatically.
CEDIA and the Consumer Technology Association run a joint standards committee named R10, which was formed to create standards and recommended practices for the installation and integration of technology into primarily residential environments.
The R10 group, overseen by CEDIA senior director of technology & standards, Walt Zerbe, consists of more than 130 volunteer members, including integrators, manufacturers, protocol suppliers, members of other associations such as SMPTE, DTS, and Dolby, content creators and more.
All about recommended practices (RPs)
Within the R10 group, there are a few current RP (recommended practice) sub-groups: RP22, RP23 and RP1. The first of these three endeavours is RP22: Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice, which is a revision of the CTA/CEDIA-CEB22-B Home Theater
Recommended Practice: Audio Design. When CEB22 was created, immersive audio was not fully specified or released, so the focus was on general home theatre practices. RP22 is described by Zerbe as “a major three-year revision”, that includes immersive audio, universal speaker layouts for all formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Auto 3D, etc), a greatly expanded bass management section, coverage, seat-to-seat variation, and a never-before-done addition of performance levels. The terms ‘home theatre’ and ‘home cinema’ have also been removed from the title to be more inclusive of all immersive audio, including gaming, streaming, music and more.
The performance levels section of RP22 may be the most disruptive element of a recommended practice in decades. A common problem in the industry, specifically in the entertainment space, is measuring a system’s quality and performance. In the
past, most would either quantify it with a monetary amount or describe it as a ‘reference system’. Instead, this group posed the questions: ‘reference to what, reference how, and what does that even mean?’
RP22 defines performance targets for reference as well as two levels below and one above. There are 21 parameters that are predictable at the design engineering phase of a project and measurable at postcommissioning and calibration phases.
Level 1 is the minimum that is considered able to convey basic artistic intent; level 2 is increased performance; level 3 is reference; and level 4 exceeds reference.
“For the first time, we will have objective rather than subjective definitions of in-room performance,” says Peter Aylett, partner at Officina Acustica and recent CEDIA Fellow inductee.
RP22 will help integrators:
› Compete on a level playing field by proposing systems based on performance levels, helping avoid competing situations where someone will say they can do it for less, as now ‘it’ is objectively definable
› Deliver consistent user experiences through the application of engineering
› Separate themselves from the untrained DIY and DIFM markets by bringing engineering integrity to systems
› Deliver systems that are signed
off on objective metrics
› Select the correct products through their engineering specification facts
Why we need RPs
Some might say the industry is doing just fine without these new recommended practices and standards, and that they’re not necessary. To that, Zerbe says: “We have a responsibility as an industry to do our work to the best of our ability all of the time, and we need the knowledge to do so.” Not only that, but standards and recommended practices give the smart home industry credibility among other industry associations, adjacent trades and the design/build community.
“Professional CI is under huge pressure from the mainly consumer Gigacompanies who are offering increasingly compelling user experiences through the retail/DIY channel,” adds Aylett. “Standards will help professional integration companies to apply a humancentric engineering-based approach as opposed to a product-based one.”

Promoting the power of pixels
By Jo Ruddock
digital signage summit ise
Florian Rotberg, managing director, invidis consulting
Today’s Digital Signage Summit (DSS) will revolve around the power of pixels. This has a dual meaning, as conference chair Florian Rotberg explains. “Firstly it is about more energy efficient and sustainable digital signage concepts in times of energy crisis, and secondly it is about concepts and experiences which excite, engage and convert.”
He continues: “Digital signage is becoming business-critical in more and more vertical markets. Airports, quick-service restaurants or shop-floor applications cannot be operated without digital signage. This requires very robust concepts with extensive remote access.”
In response to this, the industry is moving from hardware-driven to managed services, similar to IT and other sectors. “Fine pixel pitch LED is continuously gaining traction as the visual solution is becoming more affordable. Almost all professional screens feature integrated media player functionalities (SoC) with surprisingly good performance. SoC seems to become a relevant platform for digital signage,” Rotberg adds.
delivering experiences at the point of sale, guiding travellers and keeping employees informed.
“With the emergence of managed services, pro AV will become more affordable and easier to use,” says Rotberg. “As ecommerce is reaching its peak, stationary retail and office work will experience a renaissance, but only when data drives the offline world as much as online. As AV becomes more important and easier to install, new integration partners (such as IT) will enter the market. The industry is still far too fragmented; more mergers and acquisitions are necessary for a few global active players big enough for global operative clients.”
Of course, global trends such as the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis are also having a tremendous impact on the digital signage sector.
“Energy costs are exploding, leading to a rapid increase in demand for more energy-efficient solutions,” explains Rotberg. “Rising logistical costs and ongoing supply-chain issues put tremendous pressure on the market in delivering projects on time and on budget. For many this is a challenging task similar to the ongoing battle for talent.”
Opportunities and challenges
Despite these areas of concern, there continue to be huge opportunities in the digital signage sector as pro-AV technology becomes ever-more essential in
With so much going on in the sector, Rotberg reminds us of the value of the Digital Signage Summit: “DSS ISE offers a great overview of the latest trends and inspires how to unleash the power of pixels for integrators as well as for end users. It’s a half-day well spent, with exclusive insights into how to bring the technology showcased at ISE to maximum use.”
And of that technology being showcased on the show floor, what is Rotberg expecting to see? “More microLED, more computing power for professional SoC screens, sustainable and vastly improved energyefficient solutions and more powerful and easier to operate software platforms. Besides technology, ISE is the best platform for networking I can’t afford to miss.”

Extending reality for live events
Canon is showcasing how extended reality production – the use of LED walls as a backdrop – is not only changing the game for filmmakers, but also for corporate and live event productions.
The company is partnering with INFiLED to demonstrate how its cameras can interact with a high-resolution LED wall for “true-to-life results”, to address what it sees as growing demand across industries for higher quality and more efficient production set-ups.
Canon’s PTZ cameras, including the CR-N500 4K UHD, come with the FreeD protocol built in, which enables them to work with virtual scenes such as those rendered by Unreal Engine.

Get mission-ready with Anubis
Incorporating Merging’s new 32-bit dual preamp topology, Anubis is a compact A-D/D-A controller from the Swiss company that enables users to perform multiple ‘missions’ without changing hardware.
Monitor Mission provides control of all monitoring, including reference monitors, nearfields, headphones, sources, surround mix and downmix. If the aim is to record or rehearse a band, Music Mission controls the mixer and feeds individual cue mixes to each musician. Commentary Unit Mission provides an implementation of a broadcast commentary box for journalists commenting on live on-air events.
Anubis is available in two hardware flavours: Merging+Anubis and Merging+Anubis SPS. SPS offers an additional network connection for redundancy or to eliminate an external switch.

An enterprising year for XR
By Yanna Zhu, metaverse & XR strategy specialist at Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
With the emergence of the metaverse, many of its underlying technologies experienced newly gained popularity in the past year, particularly for enterprise use cases. One of these metaverse building blocks is extended reality (XR). XR encompasses a spectrum of immersive technologies, ranging from augmented reality (AR) that partially augments the existing world around you, to virtual reality (VR) which fully immerses the user in a digital environment, leaving no traces of the physical world.
Following the initial metaverse hype, we are now seeing many industries adopting tangible XR use cases that translate to real business value. These include using VR for better remote collaboration and job skills training, reducing the need for travel and enabling businesses to meet ESG and net zero goals.
Using immersive virtual environments here is cost effective and allows for bespoke simulations that cater for

any training or collaboration scenario, making these use cases applicable across industries and company size. They form a great entry point for deploying XR in enterprise settings and so it’s no surprise that we are seeing many businesses kick off their metaverse investments through VR for collaboration and training. More specialised sectors are increasingly looking to XR to help them solve challenges that are traditionally time- and costintensive. Digital twins are used by manufacturing, supply chain and other industrial businesses to model processes and visualise factories and warehouses more effectively. In healthcare, bespoke XR devices made for use in operating rooms help surgeons pull up anatomical models and dial-in remote experts to consult on the ongoing procedure. Efforts are made to really scale up these use cases; for instance, the UK’s NHS is now looking at streamlining procurement
guidelines and developing deployment frameworks to accelerate adoption.
Consumers will continue to benefit from AR activations, with retailers offering immersive shopping experiences that allow customers to try digital clothing, place digital furniture or even acquire digital-first goods and collectibles. As the technology improves with more lightweight, high-resolution devices being released by a range of big tech players this year, immersive gaming will also continue to flourish, becoming much more realistic.

Edtech: Addressing accelerated digital transformation
By David Davies
Along with corporate, it’s arguable that the education sector is host to the clearest manifestation of the behavioural and technological changes that have occurred during the pandemic era. Dramatic recent improvements in unified communications (UC) and connectivity solutions coincided with a sudden increase in the need to achieve effective remote learning, resulting in a new hybrid model of teaching that – to a greater or lesser extent – is set to remain part of daily life at many schools and colleges.
In recognition of the end-user overlap between UC and education technology, both solution sets are combined in a single Technology Zone, located in Hall 2, where DisplayNote Technologies, Hisense, iBoard/Starboard and Magewell Electronics are among the many exhibitors.
Visitors can also expect to see several of the key edtech
trends reflected in today’s Education Technology Summit (15:00-19:00, room CC5.3). Chaired by Dr Gill Ferrell – content chair for ISE’s education-themed summits since 2017 – the conference will explore how technology is evolving to support learning in a challenging global environment, and show how education providers and tech suppliers can take decisions informed by their impact on people and the planet.

SDVoE Alliance | Stand: 5D200 ASICs offer sustainable future for AV
The merits of ASIC-based technology are clear on the SDVoE Alliance stand at ISE. Not only are applicationspecific integrated circuits a lot less power hungry, they have the great benefit of not being affected by current chip shortages, according to Justin Kennington, president of the SDVoE Alliance.
“SDVoE products are widely available, while many proprietary AV-over-IP products are back-ordered for over a year,” he said. “SDVoE is powered by an ASIC chip that is targeted specifically at the pro-AV market. As a result, demand is easier to predict, and it has not been subject to the significant shocks seen in other electronics industries.”
Semtech’s BlueRiver ASIC combines AV processing, encoding/decoding and network connectivity onto a single chip, which interfaces to the SDVoE API in a standardised way, giving SDVoE products natural interoperability.
SDVoE’s uncompressed video transmission is also more sustainable, because high compression ratios demand complex, power-hungry algorithms, so FPGA-based products consume up to four times the power of ASIC-based devices.

Dante Domain Manager adds subscription model
Audinate is now offering a subscription model for Dante Domain Manager, the network management solution that it says brings enterprise-grade system administration to the AV world.
Dante Domain Manager allows for user authentication, role-based security and audit capabilities for Dante networks. With the subscription model buyers can treat it as an operating expense rather than a capital expense, ensuring it is more accessible. Available in three editions, Silver, Gold and Platinum, subscriptions can be tailored to meet user needs and budgets while maintaining the agility, scalability and security necessary to create a trusted audio network.
The Silver Edition supports 20 Dante devices in two Dante Domains, suitable for smaller installations such as houses of worship, recording studios and broadcast facilities. The subscription includes ongoing support and maintenance.
The Gold Edition supports 100 Dante devices in 10 Dante Domains, while the Platinum Edition supports 250 Dante devices in 50 Dante Domains. —DAVID FOX www.audinate.com
Kennington: ‘An ASIC-based solution, like SDVoE, is the only way forward’
With 8K approaching, increased compression would mean larger boxes, more fans or limited performance.
“An SDVoE Alliance member recently supported an installation with over 1,000 endpoints at a large facility in Brussels. The installation resulted in over 150,000kWh annual energy savings,” said Kennington, saving the customer more than $26,000 per year in electricity costs. —DAVID FOX www.sdvoe.org

A new addition to the Torus range
Martin Audio has unveiled a third model in its Torus loudspeaker family at ISE.
The Torus 8 is a passive, two-way speaker designed for small- to medium-scale applications which do not need the longer throw capabilities of a line array. Primarily intended as an array element in vertical constant curvature arrays, it can also be deployed as a point-source loudspeaker or as a horizontal centre cluster in venues with short throws and high ceilings. Torus 8 manages a 100° by 20° coverage pattern from a lightweight 14kg enclosure; the small size extends its range of applications from live sound and permanent installations to corporate events, gigging musicians and DJs.
A phase plug is mounted in front of an 8in neodymium driver to increase mid-band sensitivity; a 1.4in voice coil polymer dome neodymium compression driver means SPL can be as much as 130dB.
For extended low frequencies it can also be teamed with Martin Audio’s cardioid subwoofer partner SXCF115. This new subwoofer features a forward facing 15in driver and a 12in rear facing driver and can deliver 137dB peak.
ISE attendees can hear the Torus in action in Martin Audio’s demo room (F1) in Hall 8.0. KEVIN EMMOTT www.martin-audio.com
Audac says this makes Atellio unique and allows for more flexible solutions with fewer products. It also offers users
the ability to cover a wider range of scenarios with a more compact and sustainable product range. Each product is expandable through additional software licences, providing the ability to adapt to different features when required, without any investment in additional hardware. Both the networked control panels and wall panels, as well as the paging microphones, support Dante/AES67. They are PoE-powered and network controlled to provide flexibility and installer convenience, with connectivity on a single network cable. Corporate audio: Upping the ante on sound quality
By David Davies
The tendency of the pandemic to accelerate newer technology trends has been much remarked upon, but the way in which it has refocused attention on some other areas should not be underestimated. With a sharp rise in the number of meetings and conferences taking place remotely, audio quality was always certain to receive renewed scrutiny, prompting some corporations to invest heavily in new microphones and accessories to keep things on track. With the pandemic hopefully moving
into the rear-view, it’s inevitable that many companies’ AV heads will be reviewing what they have got – and what they still need – to ensure that everyone is heard loud and clear in this new era of hybrid working. Free AES70 support on hand
The OCA Alliance is inviting ISE attendees to get hands-on with AES70 Explorer software from DeusO on its Hall 7 stand.
AES70 Explorer is a free AES70 controller that supports the development of AES70 products. It supports any device that has implemented the AES70 standard and can work in multi-vendor environments and systems. It discovers AES70 devices on the network and provides a UI that allows a user to inspect, monitor and control parameters of a device that are available as AES70 objects.
This allows AES70 Explorer to act as a device controller, a network inspection utility for discovering AES70 devices, and a development tool to allow detailed inspection of AES70 objects within connected devices.
For developers, AES Explorer works as a controller allowing the creation of GUI controls for interacting with device parameters. Building a custom, multi-vendor AES70 control surface can be achieved by adding OCA object control widgets onto the workspace.

Bridging the old and new worlds of AV connectivity
By Chris Pennell, principal analyst, Futuresource Consulting
The AV-over-IP (AVoIP) market is moving from the early adopter phase to rapid adoption. Enterprises are turning to AVoIP because it provides flexibility and scalability and enables remote support and cloud-based services. Using existing Cat5e and Cat6e cables, installed as part of the enterprise local area network (LAN), removes the need for dedicated AV cabling infrastructure. This combination can reduce the total cost of ownership.
AVoIP solutions are created as walled gardens thanks to proprietary formatting; connecting different vendor solutions or even legacy matrix-switched installations has been discussed since the introduction of AVoIP, but the complexity
means it remains out of reach for most enterprises. However, this is changing. The demand for standardised, openaccessible technology has led to the development of specific standards: AES67 for audio, SMPTE ST 2110 for video, and Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) for system management. IPMX, which shares many technical benefits with ST 2110, has already demonstrated its ability to support interoperability. It also supports asynchronous sources of video and audio while managing latency issues. At InfoComm 2022, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) demonstrated how ST 2110 and IPMX could interoperate. As the number of vendors supporting these
standards increases, the ability for different vendors’ flavours to interoperate will grow. In 2023, the old and new worlds will have to find a way to co-exist. While AVoIP solutions offer benefits over legacy solutions, legacy solutions will not disappear overnight. Installed solutions will likely remain in place so long as there is no need to upgrade. The challenge facing enterprises in 2023 will be knowing when to move from legacy solutions to IP-based solutions and at what speed.
