WELCOME TO CES 2022

TWITTER

BY GARY SHAPIRO, PRESIDENT AND CEO KAREN CHUPKA, EVP, CES CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION

What’s New Back in 1967, the first CES featured pocket radios and televisions, drawing a crowd of 17,500 attendees to see 200 exhibitors. By comparison, CES 2022 is a digital wonderland. Artificial intelligence, robotics, 5G, blockchain, and other technologies that were unimaginable 55 years ago are now powering categories like space tech, food tech, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and countless startup innovations that are shaping our connected future. CES 2022 features incredible new technologies like Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser spaceplane, which can be found in Central Plaza. Selected by NASA to ferry crew and cargo to the International Space Station, Dream Chaser is a multi-mission space utility vehicle designed for low-Earth orbit destinations. Sierra Space—alongside companies like Zero-G, SpaceMap, Canon and Qualcomm— are building the foundations of a vibrant space economy driven by tourism and research. Those not quite ready to head into orbit can visit other CES exhibitors like drone manufacturers Skydio and Autel Robotics. Back on earth, cryptocurrency and digital asset companies are making waves, transforming the marketplace through NFTs, initial coin offerings (ICOs), and other blockchain-based technology. Heralding a major expansion of digital assets into the tech universe, companies like NFT platform Autograph; NFT curator Atomic Form; printed video company Infinite Objects, and many more are at C Space in the ARIA, part of our biggest C Space programs ever. We’ve also seen enormous growth in connected devices, making our homes, neighborhoods and cities smarter, safer and more sustainable. Close to home, we’re excited about advancements from companies like LG, Samsung and Sony in NextGen TV—which can enhance broadcasts with interactive internet content tied to live sports, news and events—and entertainment in the palms of our hands. Looking bigger picture, in emerging smart cities around the globe – including right here in Las Vegas— 5G and IoT are powering life-changing technologies, supported by CES 2022 exhibitors like Corning, Green Cell, Quanenergy, GROV Technologies, and R-Zero Systems. You can catch conference sessions on a range of IoT topics, from “The State of the Smart Home” to “The Connected Car—Here and Now.” And of course, if you want to find the next tech unicorn, look no further than Eureka Park, where startups and investors collaborate to deliver the future of technology. We’ll have delegations spanning the globe, from France and the Netherlands to South Korea and Japan, representing hundreds of countries hoping to make it big on the world stage. Next generation innovations from global startups, space tech, food tech, digital assets and smart cities are just a smattering of the hottest tech to see at CES 2022—so don’t miss out! Before CES wraps up today, I hope you can take the opportunity to wander the show floor and see some of the amazing innovations that are transforming our world. And if you can’t make the time, don’t forget that our keynotes, discussions, press conferences, exhibitor booths and more will be available on-demand through the end of January! Sincerely,

Gary Shapiro President and CEO Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™

Abbott’s Ford Speaks About the Lingo of Human-Powered Health BY DAVID MCGEE Abbott Labs Board chairman/CEO Robert Ford could hardly have picked a better time for his CES keynote address, the first by a healthcare company representative in CES history. Ford arrived with Abbott having gathered no less than five CES 2022 Innovation Awards and also in the wake of the company’s heady 2021 year of achievement, which included FDA approvals for its innovations and, not least of all, the creation of the Abbott Center for Malnutrition Solutions, an innovation hub dedicated to reducing malnutrition around the world. A collaboration between Abbott and external nutrition experts and partners, the Abbott Center aims to identify, treat and prevent malnutrition for the world’s most vulnerable populations. But Ford came less to praise Abbott specifically than to explain how Abbott’s innovations fit into the company’s focus on “human-powered health.” Abbott’s innovations are empowering the populace to take charge of its own health issues, thereby creating an entirely new doctor-patient dynamic in which both parties have all the essential data at hand with which to plan a path forward. To underscore his message, Ford introduced an all-star lineup of users, partners, scientists and specialists to illustrate the diverse ways Abbott technologies are altering the healthcare landscape. “These are stories about the convergence of health and technology to empower human lives,” said Ford, a native of Brazil who has been with Abbott for 25 years. “Health tech is at an inflection point. We’re creating a future that will bring you and your loved ones care that is more personal and precise, and will take human capabilities to entirely new levels. A future where people can practically manage their own health—decentralize and democratize healthcare. With the right tools we can give everyone the best chance to live their best lives.” For e x a mple: Sherri Shepherd, a co-host of The View whose family history of diabetes continues with her, offered a vibrant account of how Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre “changed

Abbott Labs Board chairman/CEO Robert Ford

my life—it didn’t hurt, I didn’t need the fingerpricks anymore, it gives me my readings right on my phone, it’s accurate and it holds me accountable. I’m breaking the multigenerational diabetes history in my family.” Tyrone Morris, a young man who suffered from congestive heart failure, offered vivid testimony of how Abbott’s CardioMEMS system helped manage his care until he could get a life-altering heart transplant a year ago this month. He now leads a support group helping others in situations similar to his. At every turn, Ford dazzled and inspired the audience with the innovations he was introducing: from the amazing promise of “the connected care experience” (as detailed by Dr. Leslie Saxon, executive director, professor of medicine and clinical scholar, USC Center for Body Computing and an Abbott partner for 25 years) in which “continuous data provides the earliest warning of a serious event and it can be corrected or mitigated before it happens”; to an astounding video presentation by Dr. Fiona Gup-

Sherri Shepherd, co-host of ‘The View’

ta, director of movement disorders, Mount Sinai Neurology in which the doctor’s handheld Abbott neuromodulation device completely calmed a Parkinson’s patients severe tremors without the patient ever leaving his home or Dr. Gupta leaving her office; to an enthusiastic presentation by Dr. Hakeem Bouzamondo, head of Abbott’s nutrition R&D team, hailing the use of technology to monitor “the composition of your gut biom—we would shift the paradigm from looking at only one organ to seeing a connected ecosystem.” And then Ford topped himself by introducing a video featuring Olympic marathoner Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya, the first to run a sub-twohour marathon, who trained with Abbott’s Libre Sense glucose sport biosensor. Kipchoge minced no words in singing the device’s praises in giving him molecular glucose data every minute during his workouts. Which in turn led to a special announcement by Ford introducing a new Abbott family of biowearable sensors, dubbed Lingo, to track key signals in the body “to better understand what it’s telling us.” In addition to a glucose sensor, Lingo will include sensors monitoring levels of Ketone, Lactate and Alcohol, and will be available across the board, for elite athletes to “those just beginning their fitness journey.” “A future for everyone,” Ford declared enthusiastically. “Human-powered health—it puts you at the center of your health. New year, new life!”

Connect, Collaborate and Be Creative With Canon in 2022 BY GRANT MORGAN BOOTH 15086 “The world has changed, the needs of our customers have changed and Canon has changed,” said Kazuto “Kevin” Ogawa, president and CEO, Canon Americas during Canon’s “TogetherNext” press conference at CES 2022. “The pandemic has caused us to think differently about the technology we introduce, now, more than ever, and we identified two key trends during the pandemic—the need for being together, and the need to work more efficiently and more collaboratively.” Always pushing to be at the forefront of creativity, Canon announced the new Canon RF5.2MM F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens during the press conference. The world’s first digital interchangeable dual fisheye lens, the new RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens brings stereoscopic 3D virtual reality (VR) capture to the EOS R5 camera as part of the EOS VR System and is capable of shooting stereoscopic

3D 180-degree VR imagery to a single image sensor. This streamlines the complexities of virtual reality production for seasoned professionals and newcomers alike, most notably with being able to stitch together efficiently within Adobe Premiere Pro for amazing results.

With the need for better collaboration tools to help hybrid and remote workers everywhere, Canon announced the creation of the AMLOS (Activate My Line of Sight) System. This system is currently in development, but aims to help redefine how we see, engage and interact. Aligning with Canon’s three-word slogan of “single, simple and seamless,” AMLOS is being designed to use a single camera, enabling multiple sights, simple operation through gesture control (for in office participants) and seamless connectivity with software such as Microsoft Teams—which was announced for spring 2022. Canon is also teaming up with actor, producer and HitRecord founder Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who called in via Microsoft Teams during the press conference to share how he and the HitRecord team will virtually participate during CES 2022 and use the AMLOS System to brainstorm film concepts, create characters and develop storyboards with CES attendees, resulting in an animated short film to be produced and released in the weeks following CES. Highlighting how they are innovating to connect people around the globe, Canon shared a glimpse into the progress of its Kokomo VR software. Using Canon cameras and imaging technology with Kokomo software will provide people the opportunity to have real interactions with a 3D experience of beautiful and life-like VR destinations with video calling. While it’s still in development and unavailable for purchase at this time, Canon will soon be announcing the official launch date of Kokomo and has exciting plans to add new destinations, functionalities, and features to the Kokomo software, along with expanded compatibility with Canon cameras and lenses, including the Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye Lens, also being showcased at CES. Replicated through Canon technology in the highest level of detail that celebrates the original work, a high-resolution facsimile of “The Wind and Thunder Gods” by renowned painter Tawaraya Sotatsu can inspire new generations worldwide, thanks to a joint project organized by the Kyoto Culture Association (NPO) and co-sponsored and promoted by Canon. The Cultural Heritage Inheritance Project is a social contribution initiative with the goal of preserving original cultural assets by creating high-resolution facsimiles of Japanese art.

Fintech Democratizes the Financial System BY STEWART WOLPIN Based only on the purity of ones and zeros, fintech holds the promise of obliterating inherent banking biases. The four panelists on the “Fintechs and the Promise of Inclusivity and Diversity” conference each represent stark examples of how fintech is creating a more egalitarian financial ecosystem. “When I look at the ability to start a fintech company, the accessibility to that technology, and then for me to be the one leading that charge and others—whether it’s women, black people, Hispanic people, the LGBT community—the ability to start companies with a different perspective from the top down, fintech has made that extremely possible,” explained Craig Lewis, founder and CEO of Gig Wage, which enables companies to more easily pay freelancers. “What fintech has done has allowed a unique set of people to come in and create a unique set of solutions with a different perspective.”

Each of the panelists presented a version of this vision via different solutions to a system that has favored large institutions and consumers with high credit scores. “Forty-five million people in the United States are credit invisible,” asserted Raja Chakravorti, head of financial access at Plaid, which builds infrastructure to connect financial institutions to fintech applications. “Things that traditional financial institutions use to evaluate and provide them with financial services are skewed against them.” Borrowing and lending online provides less advantaged consumers and businesses a way to have their credit worthiness judged on more than just a FICA score. “All your transactions are on a digital ledger that anyone can look at it,” explained Sushil Prabhu, CEO at Dropp, which specializes in enabling microtransactions. “If you’re online, they can lend you money in a day because they can look at all your digital transactions.”

Craig Lewis, founder and CEO of Gig Wage

Fintech also represents more democratized access to and knowledge about the state of your finances. “Everything that we’re talking about leads to every single person having access to money, when they need it, how they need it,” noted Jeanniey Walden, chief innovation and marketing officer at Dailypay, which helps businesses pay workers immediately after work rather than having to wait for a bi-weekly paycheck, “and then transparency—how much money do you have, how do you use it, whether you’re a company or whether you’re just a regular person on the street.”

AI

The Great AI Migration BY SIMON FORREST, PRINCIPAL TECHNOLOGY ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTIG Artificial intelligence, at its core, can be defined as an information system that allows computers or robots the ability to perform analytical and reasoning tasks typically done by humans. This is an intentionally vague definition as the abilities of AI continue to evolve, allowing for more complex cognitive tasks to be performed completely autonomously. These advancements have propelled AI into the spotlight, making it the “next big thing” in technology as its abilities can be utilized across just about every industry. Now, AI is rarely used alone. It’s more commonly found working in conjunction with machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). Before we look at the future of the industry, it helps to have a solid grasp on what each of their functions are and how they work together.

As stated above, AI describes any human-like intelligence that is exhibited by a computer or programmable machine, effectively mimicking the capabilities of the human mind. The discipline is not new but has come into sharp focus throughout recent years. Computers have become more powerful and the semiconductor industry is making great strides towards manufacturing chips containing processors specifically designed for executing AIbased algorithms. Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that concentrates on developing algorithms and statistical models that enable machines to make decisions without specific programming.

The machine learning process effectively refines its results and reprograms itself as it digests more data. Over thousands of iterations, this increases efficacy in the specific task that the machinelearned algorithm is destined to perform, delivering progressively greater accuracy. And at the center of this is deep learning. This is a further subset of machine learning that can teach itself to execute a specific task autonomously from large training data sets. The aspect that sets deep learning apart from other methods is that these tasks are often learnt entirely unsupervised and without human intervention. By combining the three disciplines of AI, ML and DL, computers can effectively learn from examples and construct knowledge. They can recognise objects, understand and respond to verbal natural language, tackle intractable problems, and even make decisions that humans might consider rational and perceptive.

28 | CES 2022 DAILY | JANUARY 5-8, 2022 THE TRANSITION FROM THE CLOUD TO THE EDGE Currently, training of AI is often driven by large corporations with the necessary compute resource and training data. Major factors driving the growth of AI include developments in machine learning, which in turn are occurring due to advancements in computer science. This allows for an increase in computing power and cloud storage which provides companies the ability to collect, store and analysz large volumes of data. However, there are issues with cloud-based AI. The primary one lies in latency. The lag time between deciphering the data and deriving insights to help make intelligent decisions is becoming a more common issue, as sensors and smart devices are being more widely used. And in product-based industries, the need for more accurate and specific data is also prompting the need for an alternative method of collecting data and generating insights. While AI is broadly now considered “a better algorithm” for data analytics and insights, it’s not superhuman. For example, if machine learning uses biased training data, then the output from the AI can be incorrect at best and dangerous at worse. Therefore, the need for highly representative data is becoming vital. Indeed, there are companies today that specialize in creating synthetic data sets for AI, such is the necessity of having access to large volumes of unbiased data during training to deliver optimum results. Until recently, AI required relatively high-performance processors to deliver results. However, with the advent of silicon chips with integrated neural network accelerators, it’s now possible to shift AI’s host from the cloud to the device, otherwise known as edge computing. Today, running AI “on the edge” in consumer devices is rapidly becoming commonplace. This leads to improvements in speed, accuracy and privacy. The advancements made in machine learning are now helping to optimize models that are based on deep neural networks, making them compact

and efficient enough to run at the edge. This allows for the integration of cognitive reasoning without needing to appeal to cloud-based servers. Essentially, this allows newer machine learning models the capacity to deal with videos, speech synthesis, data gathered by cameras and microphones, voice recognition, and other data collection sensors. And when edge devices are integrated with special AI chips, the insights and analysis that is hidden in these data clusters can be uncovered.

FACTORS DRIVING GROWTH IN EDGE COMPUTING • Increasing investments on the advancements and development of AI and ML. • Machine learning tools and training sets being made available to third parties, allowing development of their own AI-based solutions. • The design of silicon chips with neuromorphic computing technology by tech giants; this is coupled with improvements in silicon chip manufacturing to build large SoCs containing several neural network accelerators. • The ability for AI to be trained using large volumes of synthetic data, alongside real-world examples to remove bias. • The advancements made in probabilistic modeling wherein computing systems determine the best solution to a problem by taking into account all the uncertain variables. • Advancements in machine learning, in which a computer gets better at performing a task based on the data that it receives.

EXAMPLES OF AI EDGE COMPUTING To showcase recent examples, think of virtual assistants such as Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant. Currently, the speech processing elements of these assistants can be run directly on today’s silicon chips. Moreover, the new Amazon AZ2 neural processing units are being integrated into silicon chips

for Smart Speakers and are now processing some of the speech recognition on the device itself. And smartphone processors have been able to do this for a few years now. However, it’s not quite at a place where it can be entirely handled on the device. Beyond simple command and control aspects, and now some of the speech processing itself, the intent—what the user requests—is still processed in the cloud because the assistant must refer to large databases that reside online to find the result. AI on the edge extends to visual tasks as smartphones utilize AI for “computational photography” which blends pictures from several lenses to create a polished final image. Another example is the use of AI to upscale HD content to 4K on smart TVs, by recreating the missing details.

WHERE THE FUTURE IS HEADED In order to provide devices with the capability to handle AI workloads, the development of chips with neuromorphic computing technology is happening. These chips are being funded and created by tech giants like Intel Corp, Samsung, Apple, IBM and others. Ultimately, the design of the neuromorphic chip is inspired by the neural networks of the human brain. It works to replicate the connections that are formed when neurons communicate with each other. Naturally, this means neuromorphic chips are packed with artificial neurons and synapses that mimic activity spikes that occur in the human brain, allowing them to become smarter and more efficient in their ability to handle heavy algorithms. As they are now an intrinsic part of the AI hardware market, they create new market opportunities by connecting with servers for cloud computing. This will be especially relevant with IoT devices; security systems, smart meters, connected cameras, and other connected wireless devices. Industries that will be heavily impacted include automotive, aerospace & defense, home automation and smart cities. The acceleration of developments being made in AI and machine learning means we’ll soon be living life on the edge. Or at least our devices certainly will. The Evolution of Wearables and the Health Opportunity BY GUY HAMMETT, SENIOR MARKET ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTINGT Fitness and activity tracking have played leading roles in the world of wearables for years, enticing consumers and driving uptake. Users are tracking their step count, active minutes, heart rate, sleeping patterns and much more, with Futuresource Consulting’s figures showing an installed base of more than 780 million worldwide. However, the opportunity is intensifying. Wearables are undergoing a transformational shift. The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of health, fitness and wellbeing. Buoyed by widespread lockdowns, enforced social distancing and the closure of gyms and leisure centers, digital health tracking became a rising priority, driving premium hardware features and associated services.

At the same time, the enabling technology is coming of age. Sensor accuracy is improving, ecosystems have been developed and finessed, and there are many incremental improvements being made to device capabilities. There’s been a groundswell of innovation since Apple successfully integrated an ECG monitor and fall detection algorithm in its Series 4 Watch back in 2018. Combined with the expertise of global CE brands, rapid scaling is a relatively undemanding task. The next wave of wearable products will see further health innovation, including medical grade blood pressure measurement and non-invasive blood glucose tracking. These, alongside a range of additional features, are expanding the appeal of the category to a wider demographic. The use cases are numerous.

THE HEALTHCARE OPPORTUNITY Across the globe, 1.13 billion people suffer with high blood pressure. There are one billion with

respiratory disease. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes afflict nearly 850 million. Dementia affects 54 million. Three in five people living with dementia will wander at least once, with many doing so repeatedly. This can be life-threatening and stressful, and also costs emergency services around $16,000 per incident. Compare these numbers to the current wearables installed base and the opportunity becomes clearly apparent, with CE vendors and dedicated health brands all vying for market po-

sition. Health and caregiving products from the likes of Theora Care, LifePlus, Omron and Navigil are creating a counterpoint to the CE giants, with Oura and Withings occupying the middle ground.

ALL EYES ON THE EAR The ear is rapidly becoming the new health battleground. Beyond an improved listening experience, it lends itself to accurate monitoring of activity, stress, blood volume and oxygen sat-

Additionally, the comparatively new field of digital hearing health bridges the gap between perfect hearing and severe hearing loss. Somewhere in the middle there’s an accelerating consumer awareness of the need to address issues relating to mild to moderate hearing loss. In particular, Futuresource Consulting’s recent Audio Tech Lifestyles consumer survey shows that consumers are interested in conversation enhancement features in future earphones. With the industry on the threshold of over-the-counter hearing aid regulations, new opportunities are emerging for hearing aids and lifestyle headphone brands to achieve a foothold. OTC regulations will allow hearing aids to be sold without prescription, as an ordinary retail purchase and at a cheaper price point. In a field currently dominated by audiology practices and prescriptions, the CE opportunities are enormous.

CE BRAND MARKET MOVEMENTS Apple has already stepped into the space, with the introduction of the Live Listen feature in its headphones, and the conversation boost func-

CES22_d1_v4.indd 31

tion in its Airpods Pro. Sonova recently acquired Sennheiser, with a view to leverage its capabilities in the hearing aids business, as well as Sennheiser’s reputation for audio quality. Furthermore, Bose recently launched hearing aids at $850, while GN Resound launched a new hearing aid under the Jabra brand. From a wider wearables perspective, Apple is the clear market leader and continues to pull even further ahead. In health, it is focusing on developing an ecosystem that combines hardware with software and services, while its Fitness+ subscription service will tap into the digital fitness wave which has been accelerated by the pandemic. Garmin’s and Polar’s sports and fitness expertise can be transferred into the health vertical, with Polar owning a huge amount of biometric-related IP, and Garmin having acquired Firstbeat. However, lack of ecosystem may inhibit health opportunities, but partnerships and mergers remain an option. Google is leaning on Fitbit’s brand equity and vast expertise. With its Health and Health Plus subscription services, Fitbit is transforming from a hardware-only vendor into a true lifestyle

brand. Wider WearOS and Android integration will also expand the ecosystem.

OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME Yet there are still hurdles. Data privacy concerns continue to inform the agenda, as many feel uncomfortable about trusting CE brands with their intimate data. Sensor accuracy, though improving, still comes with a fairly wide margin of error, and FDA regulation also remains an obstacle. As brands move from a wellness positioning into healthcare, the rules of engagement become radically altered, but the opportunity remains. STREAMING

Streaming Behavior Mindsets Shifting in 2022 BY DAVID SIDEBOTTOM, PRINCIPAL ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING The evolution of premium streaming video on demand has seen different phases of development condensed into less than two years since the start of the pandemic. As indicated within our research at Futuresource Consulting, a total of 500 million subscription video on demand (SVoD) subscribers have been added since the end of 2019, highlighting how premium streaming behavior has accelerated or been reinforced across all corners of the globe. New services have launched, driven by the continued drive of D2C services, along with international expansion. However, the anticipated slowdown in streaming video subscriber uptake was realized in 2021, with major players including Netflix and Disney+ both reporting a significant, but not unexpected slowdown, as consumers effectively brought their decision to take a service forward from 2021 to 2020. Further underlying consumer behavior also suggests a potential shift in how consumers manage their SVoD services and that the days of prolific ‘service stacking’, particularly in well established markets such as the USA, may be over. Futuresource’s Living With Digital consumer research from 2021 highlights that consumers are thinking differently about their SVoD portfolios, meaning that churn management from SVoD providers will remain as pertinent as subscribe acquisition for the foreseeable future. There was a notable increase in intent to cancel services in H2 2021 compared to the previous two surveys undertaken. This was evident across all types of services, with even the ‘utility’ platforms of Netflix and Amazon Prime Video seeing a marked increase in intent to cancel. Although carry through on this intent is likely to be much lower, with service bundling and general apathy towards the cancellation process helping reduce this actual cancellation rate, this shift in mentality is still quite striking. This is particularly significant when considering that typically over a quarter of SVoD subscribers said they will cancel and restart services more in the next year than they do now, effectively “dipping in and out more.” Whereas the increased intent to cancel and switching of services provides a more negative outlook, this is contrasted by the fact that around one-third of European SVoD subscribers and over

CES 2022 DAILY | JANUARY 5-8, 2022 | 33 40 percent of U.S. SVoD subscribers say they will take at least one more SVoD service in the next 12 months than they do now—an increase since the last wave. This demonstrates that the thirst for new services and content has not dried up since the easing of restrictions. These combined findings potentially point towards a future of service surfing rather than service stacking, whereby subscribers will continue to add new services and may consider replacing an existing one, rather than adding it on

RELATED CES 2022 SESSIONS Streaming TV 2.0: From Simple to Sensational WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 5, 10-10:40 A.M. top. Thus the boom in multiple service uptake witnessed in 2020 will continue to slow, at least in terms of taking multiple services simultaneously. It is also important to remember that SVoD service adoption and usage is not to be considered in isolation. In terms of consumers’ streaming video service portfolios, SVoD services sit alongside a new wave AVoD services such as Pluto TV, particularly in the U.S., as well as broadcaster VoD (BVoD) services such as BBC iPlayer in Europe. Not forgetting transactional digital video services, Pay-TV/cable and traditional video viewing. We also know that the more SVoD services consumers take, the more likely they are to consume content on these other platforms. The new wave of AVoD services and FAST channels have generated considerable headlines and are now part of many consumers regular viewing in the U.S., with over 40 percent of American consumers watching an AVoD service at least monthly. While international expansion has also been evident from key services, uptake in Europe has proved more challenging. A strong BVoD legacy, more limited local content and a fragmented advertising and broadcast landscape across the region means that user growth will be increasingly reliant

on partnerships with TV manufacturers and possibly across the longer term, local broadcasters. With new streaming video services still rolling out, the landscape will continue to become increasingly fragmented in 2022, as will consumers’ video consumption. In order to provide seamless viewing experiences, the topic of super aggregators across all different business models becomes as significant as it ever has been. With the largest media and tech companies all staking a claim to be the ultimate super aggregator, 2022 could well be as intriguing a year in the streaming video landscape as any we have seen of late. SPACE TECH

Sierra Space’s future-cool Dream Chaser: ‘We look forward to sharing how the Sierra Space Dream Chaser spaceplane and Life Habitat module will unlock the promise of commercial manufacturing and research in microgravity to make life on earth better for all,’ says former NASA astronaut and Sierra Space president Dr. Janet Kavandi.

Space Tech: CES 2022’s Final Frontier Is outer space just a playground for rich billionaires, or is there a real space economy that’s about to blast off at CES 2022? BY STEWART WOLPIN CES 2022 attendees will be forgiven for any doubletakes as they pass Central Plaza in front of the LVCC. Yes, on display is a bona fide spaceship, the Dream Chaser from Sierra Space, a subsidiary of defense supplier Sierra Nevada. While future cool, Dream Chaser is actually a space utility vehicle which will start hauling payloads into low earth orbit starting this year and represents a potent example of the burgeoning space economy and of Space Tech on display at CES. But what, exactly, is “space tech”? “Space tech can be defined as technology for use in travel or activities beyond Earth’s atmosphere, for purposes such as spaceflight or space exploration,” explains CTA Industry Communications senior manager Jim Fellinger. “Space tech advancements are creating new communications services and opening opportunities for new applications in biology, human health and more. In other words, this is more than simply ‘consumer technology’.” Space Tech also is more than Messrs. Bezos, Branson and Musk launching themselves and their friends into space, but a growing private/ public economic ecosystem investment that includes communications, R&D, manufacturing, and yes, even tourism. Those billionaire joy rides simply help fund more utilitarian commercial space efforts. “We are excited about the future of space technology at CES and expect this category to become a bigger focus in coming years,” Fellinger adds. Any gearhead can recite the myriad merits of public investments in space, from computers to Dustbusters to Kevlar to Tang. In its recent “Space: The Final Frontier For Cybersecurity” report, research company Forrester notes, “Everything from communications to media, weather

data, and trading currently rely on some nonterrestrial components.” The report notes that thanks to Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and Space X, the number of items launched into space annually has increased 90% since 2017. According to a recent report from Morgan Stanley, the current global space economy is valued at more than $350 billion and will triple in size over the next 15 years. “While space-based systems sound futuristic,” the Forrester report notes, “they’re much more

“Our only hope is to create technology that will promote sustainability that in turn will make life on earth more sustainable.” TAYLOR OSHEL, ZERO G DIRECTOR OF SALES present than many people would suspect... [R] apid reductions in the costs of launching payloads have enabled new use cases...to emerge and also made leveraging space for other business initiatives...within economic reach of a much broader group of companies.” CES attendees can stroll around the 30-footlong Dream Chaser (unfortunately not inside it) and its “trailer,” the Shooting Star. Combined, the pair can haul payloads of more than six tons to the International Space Station, or to Sierra’s own Life Habitat module commercial space station, also on display. Dream Chaser, which can be modified to accommodate human passengers, re-enters the atmosphere at a gentle 1.5G

and can land at any airport able to handle commercial jets. Rather than operate its own transport business, Sierra looks to supply its customizable space gear to companies with their own vision on how to take advantage of the final frontier. “CES provides the perfect setting for Sierra Space to showcase our platforms to make a vibrant space economy a reality,” explains former NASA astronaut and Sierra Space president Dr. Janet Kavandi. “We look forward to sharing how the Sierra Space Dream Chaser spaceplane and Life Habitat module will unlock the promise of commercial manufacturing and research in microgravity to make life on earth better for all.” While high profile sub- and orbital celebrity f lights grab the spotlight, the new space economy will be largely functional. To help civilians prepare for a more ubiquitous space experience, Zero G (Booth 9227) provides a spacelike weightless experience without the planetary view. Its modified Boeing 727 G-Force One flies aerobatic maneuvers called parabolas to create 15 separate 20-30 second periods of zero gravity. Zero G consumer flights cost $7,500 each, and group charters are available as well. While there won’t be actual Zero G “vomit comet” flights from McCarran Airport during CES, Zero G will present a first-hand VR zero gravity experience—just a glimpse of the potential of space tech. “Space tech could be defined as anything that seeks to better understand how we and our world interact and are able to operate with essentially the universe around us,” explains Taylor Oshel, Zero G Director of Sales. “Our only hope is to create technology that will promote sustainability that in turn will make life on earth more sustainable.”

It enables television stations to better personalize broadcasts with information and interactive features, making the content more relevant and engaging for viewers. Now broadcasting in more than 40 markets, NextGen TV is expected to reach 75 percent of U.S. households by summer of 2022. CES 2022 attendees can find and engage with

models manufactured by LG Electronics, Samsung, and Sony—widely available to consumers and on display at CES in their respective brand booths. Dolby’s AC-4 audio codec is integrated with the new standard, offering consumers an incredible audio experience the moment a television receives a NextGen TV signal. As consumers are purchasing approximately 10,000 NextGen TV sets per day, this unprecedented rate of growth underscores the path towards ubiquitous inclusion and an expanding roster of television manufacturers within the next five years.

OFFICIAL

A SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO

CES 2022 DAILY ®

An Energized Future at CES I am thrilled to back in Las Vegas for CES 2022, the global stage for innovation. We are back in-person and digitally so global audiences can visit with major brands and startups, as well as hear from tech leaders and industry advocates. The importance of in-person events has been reinforced during the pandemic. Although technology is valuable in bringing us together while in remote locations, we miss seeing each other and there is nothing quite like the power of meeting in person. CES is about growing business, discovering new opportunities and forging relationships with partners, investors, customers and media. The innovations at CES will shape 2022 and beyond. The entire tech ecosystem is represented on the show floor. See transformative tech including 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality/extended reality (AR, VR, MR, XR), NEXTGEN TV, smart home, smart cities, sports tech, digital health, intelligent robotics, vehicle tech and so much more. Non-traditional companies also use the CES platform to connect with the global tech community and this year we will see advances in food tech, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies (digital assets), and even space tech. We’ll also see the foundational technologies that are being used to build the metaverse(s) that will provide immersive experiences that blend the virtual world with the physical world.

Advertising, Best Buy, NBCUniversal, Salesforce and T-Mobile – just to name a few. The tech industry is helping global citizens stay connected, informed, educated and healthy. According to CTA’s Annual Consumer Technology Holiday Purchase Patterns study, tech spending on products and services during the 2021 holiday season (October-December) reached $142.5 billion. connected sensors, displays and computing platforms.” Similarly, a factory “could have thousands of sensors on its production lines, monitoring processes in real time, which would also boost safety,” Koenig adds.

With transformative tech pushing toward a connected world dependent on network capacity, mobile carriers are responding with ultra-fast, powerful 5G networks built to improve efficiency and empower user experiences. Enthusiasm around 5G is based on its advanced proficiencies, high speed, increased bandwidth and low latency. These capabilities will inspire the creation of immense internet of things (IoT) devices from smartphones to advances in health care to even more complex solutions such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) and mixed reality (MR) that require significant computing capabilities on the edge of the network. 5G will allow cars and driverless vehicles to interact with other cars and the infrastructure surrounding them using vehicle-toeverything (V2X) technology to allow each to communicate with the traffic system. To accomplish this, extremely low latencies or time delays are required. The vehicles need to exchange information almost instantly and 5G offers sub-one-millisecond latency. 5G will enable $12 trillion of global economic activity in 2035, generating 22.3 million jobs in the 5G global value chain alone, according to CTA Market Research. CTA expects unit shipments for 5G handsets to reach almost 15 million units this year, which is an 800% increase from 2019. By 2022, 77% of smartphones shipping in the U.S. will be 5G-enabled, according to CTA. The biggest change 5G may bring is in AR and VR. As phones transform into devices meant to be used with VR headsets, the very low latency and high speeds of 5G will deliver an augmented world with an abundance of information coming from the internet. The small cell aspects of 5G may help with in-building coverage, as home routers also become cell sites. “5G will be the connectivity standard,” says Steve Koenig vice president, CTA market research. Although smartphone voice and data services for consumers will be at the vanguard for residential 5G broadband, Koenig envisions “in five years we’ll have a robust landscape of industrial IoT applications across the economy powered by 5G in every conceivable economic sector.” Koenig foresees massive 5G private networks for hospitals, campuses, factories and other institutional users. By 2027, he predicts revenues from business and institutional 5G customers will outstrip the consumer side. He foresees “a myriad of

Highlighting NFTs at C Space Some of the NFT Exhibitors at CES 2022 • Atomic Form: A new exhibitor at CES, this company makes hardware and software for NFTs and Web3 media. At CES 2022, the company will exhibit its 27-inch 4K LCD “Atomic Form Wave” that lets customers control how their crypto art is displayed. As the home for the advertising, entertainment and content community at CES, C Space is where the world’s leading brands, advertisers, media platforms and content creators meet to make deals and showcase tech shaping the industry. At CES 2022, a new category, NFTs (non-fungible tokens), will also be part of C Space. The area will feature the growing digital assets industry, with a focus on NFTs, initial coin offerings (ICOs) and other blockchainbased technologies.

• Autograph: Co-founded by Tom Brady. Autograph is an NFT platform that brings together the most iconic brands and legendary names in sports, entertainment, and culture to create unique digital collections and experiences.

NFTs are a fancy way of saying that something is unique and cannot easily be replaced by another substitute. For instance, one unit of Bitcoin or Ethereum essentially is the same as another. But a non-fungible item such as a unique photo or video is a one-of-akind item. Several popular forms of NFTs include digital art pieces, historical video moments and even history-making social network posts. Now seen as coveted digital collector’s items, some collectibles can even command seven-figure purchase prices. The goal at CES is to bring studios, entertainment companies, networks, blockchain and other technology companies together to explore opportunities with NFTs.

• FTX: A Bahamian-based cryptocurrency exchange platform that allows users to trade cryptocurrencies.

NFTs have ballooned to become a $2.5 billion market. These digital collectibles – which turn intellectutal property assets into virtual forms of memorabilia – effectively pair the monetary concept of fungibility with the shared ledgering of cryptocurrency, allowing collectors to certify high-tech assets as unique. Public interest continues to grow in these virtual keepsakes.

The Smarter Home CTA Market Research • For the fourth straight year, smart speakers lead the smart home category – 41% of homes now own a smart speaker, and 23% plan to buy one in the next year. • Smart appliances and smart doorbells (both at 26%) are the second-most frequently owned smart home tech. With consumers spending more time at home during the pandemic, innovation in smart home technology has soared with surges in smart displays, smart doorbells, smart appliances and smart speakers. Companies like AARP, Kohler, Lutron, Moen, Ooma, Ring, simplehuman and TOTO located in the Venetian Expo, will showcase why CES is the best place to experience the technologies and solutions in the smart home sector. Smart home products such as connected thermostats, networkconnected security cameras, digital assistants and lighting including Wi-Fi-connected light bulbs, allow users control over their homes’ systems and appliances. The ability to control lights or the lock on the front door via a smartphone provides convenience to users but only scratches the surface of what these always-on, always-connected, sensor-laded products can do. The true value of the smart home is not the ability to control devices via a mobile app or voice, but rather how that control is being guided and augmented by data from other connected devices and applications in the home. The connected home enjoys a symbiotic relationship with smart speakers and digital assistants. Digital assistants act as virtual command centers for smart home products. Consumers now want their devices to work with contextual relevance and a degree of independence, thereby alleviating the chore of programming each movement from their devices. More broadly, innovations in product interoperability, device intelligence, and humanmachine interfaces will define the next era of smart home devices. Smart home systems, with their extensive automation, sensing and remote-control capabilities also offer many environmental benefits with healthy home technologies such as air purifiers.

The Intelligent Kitchen While smart kitchen products like lighting, remote timing and control of appliances via Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa-voice activated features exist already – staying-athome during the pandemic increased the focus on how to make kitchens more functional. The key element involves integration. Thanks to technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence and IoT, that can be remotely controlled through an app, the smart kitchen is flourishing. CTA projects that smart home appliance revenue will reach $7 billion in 2021, and $8.4 billion by 2024. And nearly 9.1 million smart appliances will ship in the U.S. this year, expected to jump to 11.4 million by 2024, CTA says. A panoply of smart kitchen devices was introduced at CES last year including: • ColdSnap from Sigma Phase is a smart ice cream maker with prepackaged pods that deliver ice cream and smoothies in seconds. The individual servings are flash frozen and dispensed. ColdSnap, also was a CES 2021 Innovations finalist. • Moley Robotics’ dexterous robot prepares freshly cooked meals with the skill of a master chef. The robot reliably reproduces the movements of human hands and can retrieve ingredients from the smart fridge, adjust oven temperatures, plate up and clean up after itself. • Oliver from Else Labs, a single pot cooking robot dispenses fresh ingredients to automate the cooking process with the help of temperature sensing and machine vision capabilities for unattended stovetop cooking.

The Future of Mobility  The vehicle tech category will be on display in the new West Hall at CES 2022. From self-driving and electric vehicles to Mobility as a Service (MAAS) and C-V2X communications, the ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers, original equipment manufacturers, aftermarket businesses, and software and chip developers will show the latest advances in vehicle tech. For example, see autonomous vehicles that can relieve traffic congestion, support ridesharing, lower pollution levels and make driving safer. Although it’s hard to predict when mass deployment of self-driving vehicles will occur, many are now being tested on public roads. During the pandemic new applications like deliveries of groceries and medicines to consumers were delivered by selfdriving vehicles. To help educate the public about self-driving cars, CTA is working with Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE), a non-profit organization backed by the automotive and technology industries that was launched at CES 2019. What’s more, electrification of vehicles, represented by plug-in, electric vehicles (EVs) are a big trend demonstrated by GM and Tesla. Globally, many vehicle OEMs have announced plans to produce more EVs in the future. New technologies that sense and analyze data to help solve problems will enable EVs to provide clean transportation for personal vehicles. Building all-electric vehicles with self-driving capabilities integrated from the start, rather than through retrofits, is the safest, most efficient way to unlock the tremendous potential and societal benefits of self-driving cars. But vehicle tech encompasses more than just cars. Anything that moves can integrate tech like autonomous software, internet connectivity and artificial intelligence. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) safety features are now more common on new vehicles through features like collision warning/ avoidance, active lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. Flying cars or eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) look to augment existing MaaS business models by incorporating shortrange flights to address medium-range transportation needs. Uber Elevate (operating between Manhattan and JFK) is one example of this trend.

CES 2022 DAILY ®

The Next Internet – The Metaverse

companies are building metaverse-style platforms like Second Life developer Linden Lab. Proponents of the metaverse say this is a generational shift in everything from business to entertainment to social interactions.

Standards Make it Happen

The metaverse is an immersive, always-on, virtual environment created by billions of people interacting with it and each other. These are shared virtual worlds where avatars—digital versions of us— play, socialize and even work together. Its characteristics include unprecedented interoperability and interactivity — users can take their avatars and goods from one place in the metaverse to another – spurred on by virtual reality (VR) and gaming technology. Many of the building blocks of this virtualized world are already in play with a vast array of devices, systems, services and applications acting in concert. These technologies will be on display at CES 2022. 5G networks will provide the robust connectivity to support the massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) requirements of the metaverse. Cloud computing environments are a central component to operating the metaverse as well as edge compute devices including AR/VR hardware, haptic apparel, cameras, and a host of other sensors and input devices. Volumetric video will be a key construct in the metaverse. Volumetric filmmaking combines the artistry of cinema with the interactivity of video games by using advanced algorithms to render interactive threedimensional moving images. The new meta economy is rooted in blockchain technology. Consider the momentum of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) which are blockchain-based digital tokens that provide public proof of ownership of a digital asset like art, music or video. They have become popular as artists and industries like professional sports seek to monetize their craft in the digital realm. This leads to cryptocurrency and the emerging sector of decentralized finance (DEFI), which enables peer to peer transactions using digital coinage, side-stepping traditional centralized financial intermediaries. DEFI models are the new cash and the ultimate expression of the digital wallet.

To achieve a metaverse that is open, like the internet, requires standards for how virtual worlds and avatars are going to interact. CTA is developing standards to support the future of content through its XR Committee and the WAVE Project which aims to improve how internetdelivered commercial video is handled on devices and to make it easier for content creators to distribute video to those devices. Get involved at standards.CTA.tech.

CTA Research CTA’s market research shows shipments of XR eyewear (augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) headsets combined) to the U.S. will more than quadruple from 2021 to 2025. CTA also forecasts that consumer spending on gaming software will grow from $47.6 billion in 2021 to $59 billion in 2025. But the metaverse will be a resource for more than social connections and entertainment. For example, CTA’s XR Enterprise Trends report (October 2021) found companies are using VR initiatives to support training, sales, design, customer engagement and meetings. The research also found that among companies using XR tech in their business, 59% believe it will have a significant impact on their organization over the next five years.

Lucrative Space Tech

To The Stars and Back to CES A host of wealthy entrepreneurs involved in space endeavors include Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, Larry Pages’ Planetary Resources, Mark Cuban’s Relativity Space to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. Add to that list, Sierra Space, (a subsidiary of Sierra Nevada Corporation), that launched in April 2021 and is partnering with Blue Origin. The independent commercial space company has a “space-as-a-service” business model that will leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as Dream Chaser® spaceplanes and expandable LIFE™ habitats. SNC has participated in over 500 missions to space, including 14 missions to Mars. It also is a first-time exhibitor in the new Space Tech category at CES 2022 and is showcasing its spaceplane in Central Plaza. Following is an excerpt from CTA’s It Is Innovation (i3) magazine with Eren Ozmen chairwoman, president and owner of SNC.

The space economy is expected to grow to almost $1 trillion over the next few decades, from $340 billion in 2019, says the UBS Chief Investment Office, a research arm of the global financial services firm UBS AG. While much excitement is focused on space travel, there are opportunities in addition to tourism including the deployment of more satellite networks needed to satisfy bandwidth demand by automated cars and other internetconnected things. There is also the potential for asteroid mining and space-based manufacturing in the future. The UBS report says, “Over the next decade, launch costs are predicted to decline 10-fold. Part of this decline will be driven by the mainstream adoption of reusable rocket technology.” Both SpaceX and Blue Origin are expected to send medium-to-heavy payloads into geostationary orbit with their Falcon 9 and New Shepard reusable rockets, respectively. Blue Origin’s New Shepard was launched into sub-orbital space in July for a 10-minute flight above Earth, with four passengers aboard. Earlier in the month, Virgin Galactic, and five crew members ventured even higher, to the edge of space, in that company’s own space vessel. Topping those trips, SpaceX in September conducted a mission named Inspiration4 to take a crew of four space tourists higher into actual orbit on its Dragon Capsule spaceship. The space economy is forecast to soar to $1.4 trillion by 2030 with space mining, manufacturing and tourism off-setting costs. Space manufacturing could comprise growing human organs or new types of fiber optic cables; space mining on asteroids and the moon could yield valuable metals and rare earth minerals.

Can you talk about your partnership with Blue Origin? Sierra Space and Blue Origin are principal partners on Orbital Reef and we are very excited to join forces with Jeff Bezos to bring this visionary commercial space station to life. By the end of this decade, Orbital Reef will be the premier space station in lowEarth orbit for commerce, research and tourism. Think of it as a space business park. This orbital destination will be commercially developed, owned and operated. It will bring space within reach for business and travel, creating a new ecosystem. Our Dream Chaser will provide the transportation, and our LIFE modules will provide the destination on Orbital Reef. Sierra Space will also provide a node that will be used for a variety of exploration and logistics functions on the station, including docking ports to connect visiting vehicles and spacecraft. These elements will make the Orbital Reef accessible and flexible so more people, science and businesses can benefit. Sierra Space and Blue Origin are committed to a long-term vision and equal partnership for low-Earth orbit beyond the Orbital Reef.

stitute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP have succeeded in realizing a multicolor OLED microdisplay that consumes the lowest power of all available microdisplays with an extended range of applications compared to monochrome displays. This OLED microdisplay was realized within the “Backplane” project funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Transport (SMWA, funding reference: 100392259). It will be presented at CES 2022 at the joint booth of the Organic Electronics Association (OE-A). The ultra-low power microdisplay platform for wearables, which is availFraunhofer is showing new applications for ultra-low power multicolor able from Fraunhofer FEP, is designed OLED microdisplays for extremely low power consumption and is based on the proven OLED-onsilicon technology. These OLED microdisplays were previously only available in monochrome, which was sufficient for simple information displays at first. “We can now offer ultra-low power OLED microdisplays that not only display simple information in yellow, but also convey additional information in the signal colors red and green, for example, as a warning display in firefighters´ helmets or for professional divers,” says Philipp Wartenberg, department head IC and system design at Fraunhofer FEP. “The presentation of sensor data can also be fast and vivid. For example, a welder can always follow the thermal image at a weld seam, or a nurse in protective clothing with integrated sensors can immediately see if the patient has higher temperature. Visualizing heat differences was not possible with the ultra-low power microdisplays that were previously offered.

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s MACA’s Flying Car! BOOTH 61244, EUREKA PARK MARKETPLACE The concept may have been born from science fiction but the real-world emergence of the first commercial flying car is far closer to reality than most people think. One promising French company stands poised to emerge as a true first-to-market product leader, set to usher in “a bold new era of propulsion.” “The future is in the air,” says Thierry de Boisvilliers, COO of France-based MACA, a company the retired French Attack Helicopter pilot founded with

former Airbus executive Michael Krollak. At CES 2022 MACA will introduce S Eleven, the smart hybrid of an automobile and a helicopter, timed for market delivery by 2023. Through the magic of Augmented Reality (AR), MACA will showcase its product from Booth 61244 in the Eureka Park Marketplace in the Venetian Expo Center. “There are many companies working toward similar solutions all around the world, but MACA is far ahead of the curve for a variety of reasons,”

de Boisvilliers claimed. “While most companies are relying on electricity or traditional fossil fuel to power their vehicles, MACA deploys clean-burning hydrogen-based fuel cells, which allows for longer flight times and green energy sustainability. Plus, MACA brings a singular level of technological innovation to the project. While we were incubating the project at Airbus Helicopters for three years, we worked closely in partnership with several Research and Development partners, including the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in order to ensure the feasibility of the project.” Crafted on the principles of Speed, Safety and Sustainability, MACA has integrated racecar technology into the product design of its eVTOL vehicle (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing).

Mignon Clyburn, a former FCC commissioner

How Do We Establish Trust in AI? BY STEWART WOLPIN It’s a question as old as the first robot stories: How much can you trust “intelligent” machines? And as AI becomes more entrenched in systems and devices, who is responsible for AI’s actions and interactions, and how are “guard rail” standards established? These were the fascinating themes explored during the “Consumer Safety Driven by AI” conference featuring Pat Baird, head of global software standards at Philips, and Joseph Murphy, VP of marketing at Sensory. Both were gently grilled by Mignon Clyburn, a former FCC commissioner. The most vivid example of AI’s lack of trustworthiness is the recent highly publicized episode in which an Amazon Alexa suggested a 10-year-old stick a penny in an electrical outlet. “The stories that get the headlines are when something goes wrong,” Murphy countered. “But there’s millions of AI experiences every day that work and they’re safe, they do what’s intended, and they’re helpful and beneficial to humans.” Ultimately, both panelists agreed that it is up to the AI industry to create standards, to install the guard rails that maximize AI’s potential and minimize the misuse, mistakes and mistrust. The problem is standardization is slow, not only because AI technology is evolving so quickly. “One of the things with standards is they’re supposed to say what ‘good’ looks like,” Baird explained. “What we think is a product should be able to do at least X at a minimum, and X is based on what we pretty much agreed on as good practice… But we don’t know what ‘good’ looks like.”

Hisense Unveils Premium Laser Tech, Mini LED Offerings BY GRANT MORGAN BOOTH 16460 Hisense kicked off the new year strong at CES 2022 as the company unveiled its plans to push the boundaries of product performance, quality and innovation even further. Waiting for the Connected Car BY JOHN SCIACCA There is certainly a lot of interest around connected vehicles and how technologies like AI and 5G will impact next-generation vehicles, as well as improving safety, predicting behavior and going green. What role does technology play in the future of automotive? How does the tech fit in and how can we use it? These topics were covered in a panel called “The Connected Car—Here and Now” that was moderated by Carla Bailo, president and CEO of the Center of Automotive Research and featured Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and GM, Automotive, Qualcomm; Cheng Lu, president and CEO of TuSimple; and Eric Cesa, general manager and VP of Sales at ETAS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bosch. Bailo began by joking she wants her car to make her life simpler; for her car to know how she slept, and suggest things she can do during the day to de-stress, or be connected to her bathroom scale to know what she weighs and know her dietary needs. Is this what connected cars are all about? Duggal commented that Qualcomm, which ships more than 10 million semi-conducter chips annually, has been focused on automotive technologies for the past 10 years, but the next decade will see lots of modernization, with the expectation that cars will be an extension of the lives we live at home and on smartphones. Qualcomm thinks about autos in the concept of a digital chassis and what types of software it needs to run, with new uses and applications being developed every day. TuSimple is the first publicly traded autonomous vehicle company on NASDAQ, and they are focused on addressing shipping and transportation needs with Class-A trucking. Lu says TuSimple wants to leverage AI for the most reliable, safe, low-cost freight shipping and capacity, and developing Level 4 autonomous solutions that have the ability to operate a vehicle without a human on board. Trucking moves 80 percent of goods today and it is an $800 Billion industry in the U.S. alone, but it is facing a serious supply and demand challenge. Increased consumer demand is placing problems, compounded by the massive turnovers in the trucking industry among drivers. Lu says many of these issues can be solved with Level 4 autonomous trucking. Lu stressed that, to proliferate this technology, “We have to be safe, and have to be safer than a human.” Every year there are about 4000 crashes involving class A trucks with about 93 percent of

Panelists from “The Connected Car—Here and Now” session: (from left) Carla Bailo, CEO, Center for Automotive Research; Nakul Duggal, SVP & GM, Automotive, Qualcomm; Cheng Lu, CEO, TuSimple; and Eric Cesa, General Manager, Bosch

these caused by human error. When you think of the demands placed on drivers—driving around 11 hours a day, day-in-and-out, for weeks at a time—this leads to more incidents. When measuring data from three key metrics—braking, acceleration and cornering, which all lead to poor driving and accidents—TuSimple vehicles are significantly safer than a human. Additionally, they take in loads of information from the real world, can track objects up to 1000 meters away, and never get tired. The company’s AI can also forecast and look at weather to be more defensive, or “tell vehicles to make three right turns instead of a left since it is proven to be 5 percent safer. As long as the truck gets from A to B on time, that’s the goal.” ETAS supplies software, hardware and development of embedded tools to the automotive industry, and Cesa noted he hasn’t seen this much change in the auto industry in 20 years. Regarding the human-machine interface, which can have multiple menus that require drivers to take their eyes off the road, Cesa says improving the drivers experience is about building the platform. Like a cell phone’s operating system, the foundation piece of software is what runs it, and that is what the industry needs to settle on, and that success will be by delivering something similar to what consumers

have with their mobile phones. “The auto industry has realized over the last five years that they have been slow to embrace changes,” Duggal said. And the electrification of vehicles will change the physical chassis, and lead to a much longer platform life of 10-to-20 years because that is what it will be capable of. However, the “digital chassis” that runs the vehicle will be able to change daily and must have many different lives and personalities over its lifespan. A lot of the new technology comes down to changing existing learned user behavior. “Automakers want to own the experience inside the cabin,” Duggal said, and they are paying a lot of attention to the quality of this experience. Lu added that technology is here to make our lives better. TuSimple wants to make supply chain greener, safer, more robust and reliable. When you think about having a big semi on the highway without a driver, it takes lots of chips, and a big decentralized computer to run these autonomous trucks. And while future infrastructure might help, the technology is being based on infrastructure that is available today. “We can’t build based on what might be coming,” Lu said. “This transformation is upon us,” Duggal commented,” but it won’t be solved in a year or two; it will take decades.”

CES 2022 DAILY | JANUARY 5-7, 2022 | 75

NFTs Explained BY ANTHONY SAVONA NFTS, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are experiencing a great deal of popularity right now, but many people are unaware of what they are and the possibilities they create for artists. In an effort to cut through the confusion, the CES C-Space Storytellers stage held a session called “NFT, WTF?” that featured a conversation between Lesley Silverman, head of digital assets, United Talent Agency, and Erick Calderon, founder/CEO of Art Blocks Inc., about blockchain and crypto—and how they rise to the NFT bubble. The duo began with an explanation of what NFT is and blockchain’s ties to it. “The one thing about NFTs that has to stick in your mind is that there is proof that we own a digital asset,” said Calderon. “Dollar bills are technically NFTs because they have serial numbers that make them unique, but I don’t care which dollar bill you give me, so that is fungible. Non-fungible is where I would care because this object is unique in a provable way. “With blockchain, thousands of people with a vested interest have a way to prove that you own something that belongs to that person. Claiming these NFTs on a public ledger lets me prove that I own the unique asset.” With NFTs also came smart contracts, which

guaranteed artists a royalty and participation in the revenue stream, even in second-tier transfers. “A smart contract is operated by a computer—the most ruthless in the world,” said Calderon. “If you take a loan and you don’t pay it back, the computer takes your asset. It lets people interact in a rulebased manner that is immutable. “This allows the artist to participate in their own success. NFTs can be transferred without limitations, and in the smart contract world, platforms are respecting the concept of letting the artist participate. The artist can see the people transferring their art. And platforms like Rarible read the smart contract and query the royalty automatically so that it is split and delivered between the client, the artist and the platform.” With popularity comes attention from celebrities and brands trying to use NFTs for their own gains, but Silverman had some caveats. “It is not about grabbing cash,” she warned, “it is about showing authenticity. Generate good will in the community and support the community first before you take yours. Collaboration is exciting and fun. Identify the new generation of talent and pair them with people who don’t have an artistic voice so you can elevate them both.” Calderon agreed: “How many people are brought

Lesley Silverman, head of digital assets, United Talent Agency, and Erick Calderon, founder/CEO of Art Blocks Inc.

into this space from a simple tweet from celebrity or brand? They can bully their way in or collaborate with a person who exists in the space. People have established a brand in the NFT space that is pure and there are opportunities for celebrities to elevate these people. That brings more eyes to the project. Paris Hilton started collaborating with other artists and has done a great job of interacting with the space.” [Hilton was originally supposed to be a part of this panel.] Calderon added that NFTs are still in the early stages of their development, and as it evolves it will be easier for the masses to participate. Silverman added that it is a validation of the technology that it was being covered on a stage here at CES.

Technology Helped Companies Survive 2021 Challenges BY STEWART WOLPIN What was doing business like amidst a pandemic and supply chain issues? “You had to perform as you transformed,” noted one of the panelists on the “Content to Commerce: How Technology Flipped the Customer Experience” conference. “It was like changing the wheels while you were driving,” quipped another. “It was like building the plane while you were flying,” another philosophized. While the metaphors differed, they described the same situation—the need to quickly adjust to unprecedented conditions. Creating a new story through technology for customers and consumers was a key to this retail resiliency. Cara Sylvester, EVP and chief marketing and digital officer at Target, for instance, described new digital content initiatives to not only sustain

but enhance the “guest” experience. “If you open up our [Target] app, we know you, and not just based on what you’ve bought with us before, but we know who you are as a human,” Sylvester related. “You’re going to see a personalized experience... [T]hat’s definitely been a piece for us.” McDonald’s also used “both digital and engagement around that digital to connect with [customers] in very different ways,” echoed the fast-food giant’s CMO, Tariq Hassan. Hassan described how content “engages customers with the food that they love and really connect with them, [and] got us to focus on how we extend that value to our customer.” Another cliché floating just below the surface was how necessity was the mother of digital invention. “We’re seeing ourselves explore technologies that we probably wouldn’t have for another five years if it wasn’t for the pandemic,” ob-

served Asha Sharma, COO at Instacart. “We need to continue to keep an open mind,” added Sarah Franklin, president and CMO at Salesforce, “bring a beginner’s mindset that something that may not have worked a year ago, two years ago, five years ago—a day ago—may work today.” All the panelists agreed that digital content engagement tools are likely to become the “new normal.” “With the digital experience, there are people who want to do everything digitally online and there are people who want to still go to a dealership and do everything in a showroom,” noted Edward Kummer, chief digital officer at General Motors. “We found we could serve all our customers however they want to be served and let them be at the center of it. That’s what we’re going to see going forward, no doubt.”

The Business Side of Space BY JOHN SCIACCA The owners of Sierra Nevada Corporation (not affiliated with the brewing company), Eren and Fatih Ozmen, attended their first live CES to discuss how their newest company, Sierra Space, is building a global space economy that will benefit humanity. Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser is a reusable craft that resembles a scaled-down space shuttle, which the company plans to launch by the end of the year and that is here at CES. The company recently won a major NASA contract to build Dream Chaser to begin ferrying cargo to the International Space Station, and while it is currently limited to carrying cargo, the company plans on ultimately being able to deliver crew as well. SNC spun-off Sierra Space as a standalone entity to keep it agile, and hopefully lead the space race that is just starting again. As Fatih Ozmen, CEO and owner of Sierra Nevada Corporation, said, “Space is hard, and expensive and requires investing serious money,” and the company raised $1.4 billion last year to have capital to position itself to

build infrastructure. Fatih said that Sierra Space and SNC will be working together to deliver the best of both worlds, and that while the United States has been leading space exploration for the last 50 years, now China and Russia are catching up, and his companies are looking at how to solve these problems, while protecting U.S. assets and national security. By the end of the decade, Sierra Space hopes to have its Orbital Reef visionary life modules in space to replace the aging and technologically dated ISS. The companies envision hundreds of these “life modules” orbiting the earth for people, with Orbital Reef becoming like “a business park in space,” owned and operated by Sierra Space, but becoming the largest commercial real estate in space that ulti-

mately allows opening space for business. The company is working with Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origin program and discussing how to build the next-generation space station. “The hardest part of building things in space is taking the infrastructure up there,” Eren Ozmen, chairwoman, president and owner of Sierra Nevada Corporation commented. “People don’t realize how much space development and technology have impacted our lives,” said Eren. “We understand that solving problems in space will enhance quality of life on earth. As we build technologies for humans to travel and live in space, these will be the things to take everything to the next level. Space helps preserve and enhance life on earth.”

More Flavor, Less Waste: The Future Of The Kitchen 2030 BY GRANT MORGAN Exploring the future of food tech, Michael Wolf, CEO at The Spoon, moderated “The Kitchen 2030: How Food & Cooking Will Change In The Future” panel on Thursday afternoon. The panelists included Robin Liss, CEO and co-founder at Suvie; Khalid Aboujassoum, founder and CEO at Else Labs; Dr. Dochul Choi, senior vice president at Samsung Electronics, Inc., and Kai Schaeffner, executive at Vorwerk, LLC. With the explosion of interest in home cooking during the pandemic, food tech appliances and methods have experienced rapid growth, and the future looks bright for consumers to update their kitchens with appliances that utilize autonomous cooking tech to help them make better-tasting and healthier meals in less time with less waste. The greatest obstacle to making advances more

rapidly in food tech today is consumer adoption, the panelists agreed. Cooking is seen as a chore for the majority of people, and building smart, effi-

cient appliances is only a part of the puzzle. “It’s all about educating consumers,” said Liss. Predicting the future of food tech in the next 10 years, the panelists had a positive outlook and said we can look forward to connected, autonomous cooking devices that may not be robotic arms in the kitchen, but will free up time and living space by coordinating cooking methods and times to deliver meals to your tastes. Food portions delivered from the source and devices that know how to cook and prepare them, along with reduced waste, was also envisioned by the panelists. Schaeffner predicted a fusion between smart kitchen and appliances will provide healthier lives and tastier food to eat thanks to the data gathered to meet our individual needs. “I see cooking and cleaning converting from being a chore into a hobby,” mused Choi.
