Revolutionizing Massage Chairs:

Where Technology Meets Tradition

DAIWA Massage Chair

When we first introduced massage chairs to the U.S. market, it took considerable time to help people understand their health benefits. At first, people viewed massage chairs as a luxury or an indulgent gadget. We had to start by demonstrating the advantages that massage chairs could bring, primarily through hands-on experiences. But today, massage chairs are widely adopted worldwide, and particularly in the U.S., they are increasingly found in many households. Interestingly, in Japan—the birthplace of the massage chair—each model must obtain medical certification. This stringent medical approval process acts as a bottleneck for the development and introduction of new products, often leading to long lead times from development to market

also fosters innovation, creating a fertile ground for the development of cutting-edge models. As a result, the U.S. has the potential to become a global hub driving advancements in massage chair technology.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that there are 361 acupuncture points on the human body, and massaging these points can contribute to health promotion. This growing global recognition of massage as a vital health practice is further fueling the popularity of massage chairs.

massage therapy found in Japan, the increasing focus on health and wellness,

along with a growing demand for innovative products, has made massage chairs a symbol of modern health consciousness. In fact, vending massage chairs are now a common sight in many public spaces, signaling how widespread and accepted they have become. This trend is accelerating their adoption, and it seems that the day when massage chairs are a household necessity is rapidly approaching. With their health benefits gaining global recognition and technological advancements making them more comfortable than ever, massage chairs are becoming indispensable worldwide.

Daiwa Massage Chairs remains committed to designing and providing products that blend cutting-edge technology with the tradition of hospitality, offering a comprehensive approach to relaxation and health maintenance.

and making it harder for new models to emerge. Nevertheless, Japan remains a leader in pioneering advanced massage technology.

In contrast, the U.S. has a far more flexible regulatory environment. Unlike Japan, there is no strict certification system for massage products, which makes it easier for manufacturers to enter the market. This openness not only benefits sales but

Our company has continuously evolved its products, guided by years of experience and customer feedback. We embrace the fusion of Western technology with the principles of traditional Eastern medicine to enhance health. For every new model, we refine the timing and rhythm of the massages based on user input, leading to innovations like the Daiwa Supreme Hybrid. This versatile model provides back massages as well as massages targeting areas from the hips to the soles of the feet. In addition, this model is equipped with a stretching function, so you can get a massage and a stretch at the same time.

In the U.S., these innovations have been quickly embraced, particularly in a fastpaced, stress-filled society. While the may not have the deep cultural history of

Looking ahead, the future of massage chairs is poised to evolve alongside advancements in AI technology. With AI, we expect even more effective massages tailored for health promotion. Products that focus on disease prevention and provide massages optimized for specific conditions will soon be developed. By personalizing massage techniques to individual health needs, the future of massage promises to be a truly customized experience.

The Intersect of Generative AI and Virtual Assistants

FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING

Generative AI is an umbrella term that references artificial intelligence models that possess the capability to generate content. Generative AI can generate text, code, images, video, music and, of course, voices. Examples of generative AI include Midjourney, DALLE, and ChatGPT.

Large language models (LLMs) are a type of generative AI that are trained on text and produce textual content. ChatGPT is the most well-known example of generative text AI. Add in existing technology for text-to-speech and speech-totext, and companies then possess the capacity to create virtual assistants based upon generative AI.

This is a primary reason why the virtual assistant market stands at a crossroads in technical innovation. Advancements in large language models and generative AI are now considered crucial fundamental technologies necessary to expand the efficacy of voice interfaces and virtual assistant platforms. Natural and fluid conversational interfaces coupled with the prospect for AI to provide contextual awareness and greater personalisation now appear to be the key characteristics necessary to unlock future potential.

Despite the efforts of assistant platform owners, user engagement with traditional “intent-based” solutions had stalled significantly. Although the number of interactions has expanded, the industry never quite solved the challenges in influencing consumers towards using monetizable products and services using voice alone. Instead, “command and control” interaction dominated, “voice first” interfaces never quite reached maturity, and it became doubtful that the financial investment in virtual assistants as a standalone product could ever be fully justified.

Fortuitously, the development effort achieved throughout those years was not entirely sacrificed: instead, it has formed the baseline of genuinely groundbreaking solutions constructed around AI and neural

computation. Indeed, generative AI offers a welcome disruption in the technology landscape, with large language models promising to improve the accuracy of understanding user intents while significantly enhancing the construction of vocalized responses in a new generation of virtual assistant platforms. This has essentially reset the playing field for voice interfaces.

INNOVATION PATHWAY

All leading assistant platform vendors are now following broadly the same innovation pathway, with AI viewed as the catalyst for more intelligent voice and visual interfaces. Microsoft, Amazon

and Google were arguably the first companies to illustrate the way forward here. Microsoft introduced Copilot on PCs as an AI-based productivity tool in late 2023; Amazon demonstrated how large language models might transform the capabilities of Alexa; and Google is migrating users of Google Assistant over to their new Gemini platform.

This momentum continued throughout 2024: Apple introduced a new version of Siri based upon generative AI; we see Baidu further developing ERNIE, their own large language model, for products in Chi-

na. Meantime, Samsung are busy expanding Bixby’s capabilities, employing their own generative AI, called Samsung Gauss; and both Huawei and Yandex are following broadly similar engagements with Pangu for Celia, and YandexGPT for Alice. Each of these efforts are already demonstrating promising new capabilities in voice interfaces. Nevertheless, there are difficulties to overcome.

CHALLENGES AHEAD

The enormous size of large language models is causing concern for platform owners. The costs involved in both training and providing the server infrastructure necessary to handle such AI leviathans appears completely disproportionate to the revenue opportunity these assistants may eventually deliver. Therefore, platform owners are seeking new methods of monetization, often via subscription tiers that unlock access to the largest and most capable models, plus a free variant that may be suitable for simple interactions, or benign “command and control” functions.

The eradication of hallucinations—incorrect or fabricated responses generated by LLMs—remains awkwardly unresolved. This must be addressed because trust is vital for user engagement with new virtual assistant platforms. If that trust is eroded with haphazard responses that are worse than intent-based solutions, then usage will dwindle.

Moreover, voice has always promised to create a natural, frictionless interface for humans to interact with apps and services, although this dream has never fully materialized. Large language models are no doubt helping to solve this by presenting countless ways for users to express intent and phrase queries, with improved accuracy in task recognition. However, outside of the enterprise and industrial segments, the “killer app” for voice is arguably yet to be discovered.

WHY LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS ARE DESIRABLE

Large language models will form the basis of future virtual assistants because they can present information in a clear, conversational style, easy for users to comprehend. These models excel at linguistic tasks including language translation, sentiment analysis, sentence completion and formulating answers to questions. As

such, they can succinctly extract user intent from a sequence of verbal exchanges; moreover, they can frame additional questions that establish dialogue with users and help qualify meaning when the original intent is unclear.

Large language models can exhibit what is known as “in-context learning.” Once a model has been pretrained, it can be tuned from further prompts. This enables these models to quickly adapt because they don’t require as many training examples to converge on the desired outcomes. In-context learning is valuable because it can be combined with historic context to maintain knowledge of past conversations and remember user preferences, helping to personalize vir-

FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Large language models give the impression that they understand meaning and can respond accurately. But fundamentally, they are nothing more than an enormous array of statistical computations, the output of which is sometimes indeterminate, hence hallucinations are perhaps the most documented concern. Today’s large language models simply predict the next syntactically correct word or phrase; they cannot wholly interpret human meaning or emotions, therefore sometimes the output is incorrect or misleading.

If the training dataset lacks appropriate diversity, or is insufficiently representative, the outputs produced by a virtual assistant based upon a large language model will also exhibit bias.

Moreover, generative AI can present critical security risks when triggered with certain inputs. There are examples of Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) language models revealing large cohesive parts of the training data verbatim when asked to produce infinite output, although it is fair to state that this type of prompting has now been closed off by the industry.

Training bias is another important consideration. The types of data used to train language models heavily influence the outputs any given model creates. Therefore, if the training dataset lacks appropriate diversity, or is insufficiently representative, the outputs produced by a virtual assistant based upon a large language model will also exhibit bias.

tual assistant platforms. This might prove a difficult pathway to pursue, given the privacy concerns and regulation that could ensue and thwart the potential here. But by appealing to a database of previous interactions, large language models, and generative AI more widely, can utilize this to construct far better reasoning and situational awareness.

The performance of large language models is expanding because the AI improves when more data and parameters are introduced. As highlighted earlier, the costs of compute and storage are the prohibiting factors governing model size. But this can be offset to some extent through optimization—known across the industry as “quantization”—where AI models are reduced in complexity at the expense of accuracy. Consequently, a parallel activity in developing “small” language models (SLMs)—those optimized for on-device or specific tasks—will broaden the opportunity for new assistant platforms to emerge, especially those designed for dedicated verticals and applications where precision is paramount, such as in healthcare settings or the automotive sector.

Much has been written on the topic of consent. By their nature, large language models are trained on a plethora of datasets, some of which may not have been used with consent. When scraping data from the internet for the training of AI, this has been documented to ignore copyright licenses, copy written content, and repurpose proprietary content without permission from the original owners. It becomes almost impossible to track data sources; often no credit is conferred to the creators, which can expose users to copyright infringement issues. This issue can be partly resolved by using synthetic data created specifically for training, although the rules of bias again apply here insofar as synthesized data must also present a sufficiently sizable and unbiased training set.

Finally, it can be difficult to scale and maintain these platforms, given the significant compute and storage necessary for training, improvement and optimization. The deployment of a virtual assistant using a large language model demands significant expertise in deep learning, an appropriate transformer model, plus distributed software and hardware.

Bird Buddy, Audubon Partner to Elevate Bird Conservation

BOOTH 52317 In a late October announcement marking International Day of Climate Action 2024, Bird Buddy, inventor of Smart Bird Feeder technology, became an official partner to the National Audubon Society. This collaboration aims to amplify awareness and action around bird conservation, while expanding the bird feeding and watching experience to millions across the Americas.

Bird Buddy Smart Bird Feeder users already contribute valuable sightings data through Heartbeat, Bird Buddy’s community science platform. By teaming up with Audubon, this effort has the potential to scale and provide insights for scientists studying climate change and its impact on bird species. Birds are important indicators of the health of the environment, climate, and planet we all share, and what’s good for birds is good for people. The partnership will focus on raising awareness about the vital role birds play and the importance of protecting birds and the places they — and we all — need.

Bird watching offers more than just a connection to nature. Bird observations can provide key data about how climate change affects ecosystems and species distributions. By feeding and caring for birds, people also become more connected to nature and better understand how individual actions contribute to climate solutions.

Commenting on this new partnership, Bird Buddy CEO Franci Zidar, noting “There are over 96 million bird watching enthusiasts in the States alone,” said that by working together with the National Audubon Society, Bird Buddy hopes “to accelerate this growth, and strengthen the connections with nature and the wildlife around us. Sightings data on our feeder network could contribute insight into bird migratory patterns and other behaviors, further strengthening Audubon’s vital conservation science. We are excited to see what further positive impact we can have working with Audubon in bird conservation.”

“Bird Buddy shares our passion for connecting people with nature and exploring how innovation and education can help advance bird conservation,” added Chad Wilsey, Chief Scientist for the National Audubon Society. “Audubon’s science shows that some of the birds that visit our feeders are threatened by climate change, but there are actions we can take to protect them. The more that people can connect with the birds they see every day, the more they can feel inspired to solve the climate challenges we all face.”

One popular feature with Bird Buddy is the unique bird identification, called “Name that Bird” that has the potential for scientific uses for non-invasive tagging of individual birds. Other features include smart home connectivity, alerts about sick birds and predator detections near the feeder, helping protect wildlife. The Bird Buddy app is free to download as users enjoy Bird Buddy Explore which provides images and data from up to three feeders from across the world.

A Matter-Compliant Solution from Powercast

BOOTH 51716, VENETIAN Powercast Corporation is introducing a new technology solution for creating, deploying and perpetually powering sustainable, untethered, Matter-compliant wireless smart home automation sensors. These sensors integrate into smart home ecosystems (Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings) using Matter; easily install anywhere; eliminate the need for expensive home wiring; won’t require inconvenient, expensive battery maintenance; and keep toxic disposable batteries out of landfills.

Powercast’s Wireless Smart Home Automation Sensor solution is perpetually powered by the company’s RF (Radio Frequency) over-the-air (OTA) wireless charging technology. To enable either battery-free or rechargeable-battery-based sensors to power themselves over the air from nearby RF transmitters, manufacturers will embed Powercast’s tiny Powerharvester PCC110 wireless RF receiver chip and a small antenna into their sensors for around $1 at volume,

then use a rechargeable battery or no battery at all.

One RF transmitter in a room can power sensors installed up to 25 feet away, so placing one transmitter in each room will create a wireless power network able to perpetually power all the RF-enabled sensors throughout the home.

Powercast’s Matter-compliant wireless smart home automation sensors are a CES Innovations Award 2025 Honoree in the Sustainability & Energy/Power category.

Did You Know There are 3 Kinds of Quantum?

While it’s still early days for quantum technology, what once seemed like science fiction is now on the brink of transforming industries and everyday life. But did you know there are three distinct kinds of quantum technology? Let’s dive into this exciting field and understand what makes it so revolutionary.

Understanding the Basics

Quantum technology uses properties of quantum mechanics to enable new and improved networking,

QUICK FACTS

Stepping back at CES 2019, IBM unveiled its System One device, the first circuit-based commercial quantum computer.

The basic unit of quantum information is the qubit. Researchers are working with several different core types of qubits – all are under development and have different projected advantages for different kinds of problems.

• Trapped Ions

• Cold Atoms

• Superconducting Qubits

• Photonic Qubits

• Solid-State Qubits

• Topological Qubits

computing and sensing. These properties can be difficult to work with and may require production at very low temperatures in a process known as cryogenics, special shielding and error correction. But the projected benefits are significant, and many companies (including CES exhibitors) are working in this space.

The Three Types of Quantum

Now on to the three major emerging market sectors, each of which harness different quantum properties to address specific challenges and open new possibilities.

1. Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing stores information using qubits rather than the bits of current “classical” computing. Where a traditional computing “bit” is either one or zero, and never both, a qubit can hold multiple states simultaneously. The power of these structures allows quantum computers to do more with a few dozen qubits than the most powerful classical computers — for the right kinds of problems.

2. Quantum Communications

Quantum communications harness the principles of quantum mechanics to secure information in ways that classical systems cannot. One of the most promising applications is quantum key distribution (QKD), which allows for the secure distribution of encryption keys. Unlike traditional methods, QKD sends information using quantum states with properties like entanglement or superposition.

QUICK FACTS

One way to thinking about quantum computing is an accelerator that speeds up certain steps in classical computing or helps find an optimal solution to a complex problem.

Hybrids of quantum and high-performance computing, and of quantum and AI/ML, will be important in finance, chemistry, materials, logistics and more. Early commercial solutions are emerging from R&D and extremely powerful solutions are expected in the early 2030’s.

It’s physically impossible to eavesdrop on such data without disturbing these properties, so QKD ensures that any attempt to intercept the key will be detected, making the communication channel inherently secure from eavesdroppers covertly capture private keys. This method of securing information has the potential to revolutionize how we protect sensitive data, from financial transactions to national security. As quantum communication technology matures, we can expect it to become a crucial component of cybersecurity infrastructure.

3. Quantum Sensing

Quantum sensors are already making waves in the commercial sector. These devices exploit quantum phenomena to achieve levels of sensitivity and precision far beyond that of classical sensors. By measuring quantities with unprecedented accuracy, quantum sensors are transforming fields such as medical imaging, navigation, and environmental monitoring.

The quantum sensor market is not just a theoretical concept; it is already a significant commercial sector, with global revenue estimates reaching $1 billion USD in 2022 and increasing at a rapid pace. This growth reflects the practical value and increasing adoption of quantum sensing technologies in various industries. Quantum is Changing the Landscape of Data Security

Your IT department knows that the encryption used for internet and website security is at risk from quantum computing. When powerful quantum computers arrive in the early 2030’s, public-key encryption will no longer protect data. This impacts everything from the technology behind “https://” on corporate websites to government secrets. Worse, data collected by eavesdroppers today can be decrypted when those systems arrive. IT departments around the world are inventorying their use of encryption technologies and talking to vendors about upgrading to newer “postquantum computing” (PQC) technologies.

QUICK FACTS

Quantum technology could be in your home right now. Some smart TV display screens use “quantum dots”, semiconductors so small that they exhibit quantum effects. When energized, the dots absorb the energy and give it back off as red, green or blue light. With the stimulant energy controlled by sophisticated electronics, quantum dots are the pixels of these televisions.

What’s Next?

Quantum technology is more than just a buzzword; it’s a transformative force that promises to reshape industries and enhance our capabilities in ways we are just beginning to understand. The quantum future is not far off – CES 2025 will give you a glimpse into what the future holds.

Innovating Energy: How Technology is Shaping Our Power Systems

Around the globe, energy usage is experiencing a fundamental change, with technology at its core. But what does this mean for our everyday lives, and why is it happening now? Explore how recent developments are fueling progress toward a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient energy system capable of meeting society’s evolving needs.

Simply put, “energy transition” refers to a shift in energy sources — the materials used to power our world. While it might seem like a trendy term, the concept is anything but new. In fact, society has already undergone two major “energy transitions,” moving from firewood to coal to oil. And now, we’ve reached another pivotal point in the energy revolution.

At its core, this energy transition is about moving from a reliance on traditional, carbon-based sources to more efficient and lower carbon options, such as renewables (wind, solar, hydropower) and even nuclear energy. It’s also about modernizing our power grid, making it more efficient, reliable, resilient, and decentralized. In short, we’re not simply looking to swap energy sources, we’re reshaping how energy flows through our communities and our lives. And just like the energy transitions of the past, technology plays a critical role in driving and defining this next era of energy.

Why the Energy Transition Matters Now

The urgency of this transition stems from multiple factors — regulatory commitments, private sector initiatives, and our evolving consumption habits. Governments worldwide have agreed to ambitious energy goals, such as those outlined in the Paris Climate Accords, which set a target to reduce emissions by 43% by 2030. Countries are working toward meaningful changes in their energy systems to meet this timeline and those outlined in other agreements.

On the private sector front, many companies are committing to more sustainable energy practices for a variety of reasons, including cost savings, a sense of social and environmental responsibility, and to maintain a competitive edge. The evolving expectations of consumers are driving businesses to rethink their energy strategies — particularly consumers belonging to Gen Z, a group dubbed “the sustainability generation” and known for spotting inauthentic brand promises.

What makes this moment so important is that the world is not just shifting to cleaner energy sources, but is also laying the groundwork for a global infrastructure that can support increasing demands for sustainable solutions and a growing population. Already, there are more than three times as many people in the world as there were in the mid-20th century, and the population is expected to increase by nearly 2 billion in the next 30 years. This transition will address not only energy production, but also the technology and infrastructure needed to maintain a resilient, decentralized energy network.

Technology’s Role: Now and Into the Future

Technology is making the energy transition both possible and essential. It’s not just transforming how we produce and use energy, but also driving demand in ways that make this shift more urgent — while evolving our relationship with energy.

One example of how innovation is — literally — driving the need for the energy transition is electric vehicles

(EVs). Improvements in EV technology kickstarted EV adoption, and now, having more EVs on the road is intensifying demand for infrastructure upgrades. That demand is evidenced by government initiatives, like the U.S. Department of Transportation’s recent announcement of $521 million in grants to build out the national vehicle charging network. These types of investments support the growing adoption of electric mobility, reducing reliance on gasoline while empowering consumers to take a more active role in the energy ecosystem.

Data centers are another interesting factor in this energy transformation. Technologies like AI, cloud computing, 5G networks, and cryptocurrency have caused an uptick in energy demand at data centers, due to the amount of computing power they require. Estimates show that data center electricity consumption for the U.S. alone could reach nearly 260 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2026, roughly equivalent to Japan’s total energy consumption. However, technology is already solving its own energy usage issues, with advances in AI and energy-efficient technologies helping to mitigate this impact. One excellent example is Brainchip’s Akida™ on-chip learning technology, which reduces reliance on cloud computing by enabling AI processing to occur locally, thereby lowering latency and energy consumption while enhancing security.

The data centers that support many of today’s promising technologies are also spurring innovation in energy-efficient temperature control. Cooling systems account for about 40% of data centers’ energy usage, and already, smart HVAC systems are making an impact. Supported by IoT solutions from companies like Eaton, Microchip Technology, and Intellias, these technologies optimize energy use, predict maintenance needs, and ensure that both enterprises and consumers are part of a more efficient, responsive energy grid.

Looking forward, the future of energy lies in decentralized systems powered by smart technologies. From small modular reactors (SMRs, a new type of nuclear plant) to battery storage

systems operating at residential, commercial, and grid scales, there are already a variety of innovations being developed and deployed that help make more localized energy usage possible.

Just as digital health solutions revolutionized health care, empowering individuals to take more control of their own well-being, decentralized energy systems will allow businesses and individuals to generate, store, and distribute their own energy. Eaton’s “everything as a grid” approach exemplifies this shift by integrating various energy sources and storage solutions into a cohesive, flexible system. This enhances grid stability, while also helping consumers manage their energy use more effectively, reducing reliance on centralized power plants. In the same vein, Haus.me’s self-sustaining, solar-powered homes show the potential for entirely off-grid living, offering energy efficiency that’s 20 times greater than the average U.S. household. These advancements highlight the transformative potential of smart home technologies and energy management systems. By enabling more efficient and sustainable living, they pave the way for a future where energy resilience and innovation are at the forefront.

As we stand on the brink of this new energy era, it’s clear that the transition is about more than just changing our power sources; it’s about leveraging technology to build a sustainable, efficient, and resilient energy system capable of meeting society’s evolving needs. From smart grids to decentralized energy solutions, the advancements we develop and embrace today will shape the evolution of our power infrastructure for generations to come.
