MANAGING VP OF SALES, B2B TECH:

CES 2024 Will Celebrate Technology Solving Big Global Challenges We’re thrilled to be back in Las Vegas! Momentum has been building for months as business leaders, industry experts, policymakers and media prepare for CES – the world’s most powerful tech event. This year, we’re also excited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Consumer Technology Association, the owner and producer of CES. CES 2024 will see double-digit growth, as the show floor expands by well over 10%. With more than 3500 exhibitors, including 1000 in Eureka Park, expect a wealth of new and exciting innovations in top categories like augmented and virtual reality, automotive and mobility, digital health, entertainment, gaming, robotics, smart home, and many more. You’ll also see ‘horizontal’ technologies like AI and generative AI – an area of huge interest since the launch of ChatGPT a year ago – throughout the show floor, along with innovations in sustainability and accessibility designed to enhance the technologies we’ve come to love. At CES 2024, our partnership with the United Nations to support Human Security for All (#HS4A) is back and bigger than ever! This fall, the UN announced technology as a new eighth pillar of its human securities framework. We’ll carry that excitement into the show, highlighting the technologies that are solving big global challenges and making our world better for millions of people. Think drones that can help clean up water pollution, farms designed for agriculture in water-scarce areas, AI tools to support more sustainable livestock farming, non-invasive health monitoring and more! The commitment to technology that can change our world will also inspire remarks by many of our keynote speakers. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger will discuss how en-

hanced AI capabilities are creating a better, more sustainable future; Nasdaq Chair & CEO Adena Friedman, will share how technology can elevate the fight against financial crime and human trafficking; and L’Oreal CEO Nicolas Hieronimus – the first beauty industry keynoter in CES history – will showcase the important role of sustainable, accessible and inclusive beauty tech. They’ll join an impressive keynote lineup of CEOs including Best Buy’s Corie Barry, Elevance Health’s Gail Boudreaux, HD Hyundai’s Kisun Chung, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon, Siemens’ Dr. Roland Busch and Walmart’s Doug McMillon. Beyond the keynotes, our conference programming will feature more than 750 speakers across some 250 conference sessions, which include our Great Minds series, Research Summit, C Space mainstage, and Innovation Policy Summit. While the show itself will run from January 9-12, expect big headlines even before CES 2024 opens to the public. That’s because Media Days (Jan 7-8) will feature press conferences – the perfect place to launch new products – from big brands like Abbott, Hyundai, LG, Panasonic, Samsung and more. Media Days will also feature the official media preview event of CES, Unveiled Las Vegas, which offers access to exhibitor product innovations and CTA’s highly anticipated annual market research presentation, Tech Trends to Watch. CES is one of the few places where the global tech industry truly comes together. So this year, we’re thrilled to go ALL ON for serendipity, discovery and world-changing innovation. Visit www.ces.tech to discover what’s in store and to sign up for CES news and industry insights.

CTA Kicks Off Centennial Celebration at CES 2024 Founded as the Radio Manufacturers of America in 1924, CTA marks 100 years of igniting innovation at this year’s gathering BY STEWART WOLPIN As is its wont, the U.S. Congress determined it would levy a new 10 percent tax on the production of an exceptionally popular new tech device. And, unsurprisingly, the companies producing said new tech devices were unhappy with the prospect of the government laying a hefty levy on an already expensive product, potentially stifling sales as a result. So, on Saturday night, April 19, 1924, six Chicago radio manufacturers got together at dinner and decided to form the Radio Manufacturers of America (RMA). Within three weeks, RMA lobbying killed the fed’s radio tax, and one of the country’s largest and most effective trade organizations—now known as the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)—was born. CES, run by CTA of course, will mark the beginning of a series of centennial celebrations. “For 100 years, CTA has ignited innovation by leading the tech

industry through advocating for innovation-friendly policies, capturing emerging trends in market research, developing consensus standards, and convening innovators to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CTA since 1991. “The celebration of CTA’s 100th anniversary will be on full display at CES 2024 from interactive photo opportunities to an exciting look at our history and where the tech industry is heading for the next 100 years.” CTA’s centennial will be reflected and integrated into a plethora of events at CES, beginning with the show’s theme, “Igniting Innovation Since 1924,” and Shapiro’s CTA State of the Industry keynote on January 9 at 8:30am in the

16 | CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024

As CES Evolves, The Innovative DNA Persists Observations and tips from a CES veteran BY MAGGIE O’NEILL, EVP/ CHIEF CLIENT OFFICER, PEPPERCOMM The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has always been a true destination for innovation. However, the realm, reach and responsibility of innovation have changed drastically since I first set out for CES 25 years ago. Since its inception in 1967, CES has been a must-see of gadgets and gizmos galore. It was the launchpad for iconic innovations from VCRs (1970) and TiVo (1999) to CD players (1981) and LCD displays (1979). In its first decades, the show faced stiff competition from the likes COMDEX, PMA, and PC Expo. And while many of these shows have disappeared and the gadgets have gone their way to the Smithsonian, the innovative DNA of CES remains.

• Health and Wellness: It has been almost 10 years since I first spotted a Peloton at CES, and the impact of health and wellness tech has grown exponentially since. Elevance Health will take the keynote stage this year, elevating healthcare into the CES spotlight. • Small but Mighty: I remember launching the 103-inch Plasma TV from Panasonic years ago, and it felt like bigger was better. However, in 2024 the small-but-mighty chip is slated to make the major impact. Expect the big players to have their hand in everything from AI to autonomous mobility. • Mobility: The past few years, the driving force of CES has been auto, CE brands dabbling in auto, and innovative mobility technology powering the evolution to the smart city. From flying cars to autonomous trucks, the mobility space will likely once again dominate.

WHAT HAS CHANGED? The footprint and focus of CES have been the biggest changes in the last quarter century. From the original, massive CE booths of Central Hall, the show now spans most of the “Strip” and its innovation goes well beyond CE. Based on insider input, exhibitor lists, keynotes, and some sleuthing, CES 2024 will focus on four areas (though there’s much more to be seen): • AI: Surprised? I didn’t think so. Quite like IoT and Alexa a few years back, everything will have an AI thread. With Qualcomm as a Fireside Keynote, the conversation around the technology, its potential, and its impact will be front and center.

WHAT REMAINS THE SAME? At the core of CES is innovation. From its humble beginnings to today, the spirit of innovation has come to life every January. And while in years past some gadgets leaned a bit too far into innovation just for the sake of it, today’s showcase shows innovation developed and delivered with a purpose. Products not only entertain (which is still showcased and needed), but also better our lives, bring us closer, drive efficiency, and better the planet. Sustainability will be another red thread woven through innovation this year, including the keynote from Walmart that will tackle the subject at retail, and

categories—provide farmers with visibility into key aspects of their operations, including carbon emissions, soil health, and fuel emissions, so they can make more informed decisions that not only benefit their farms, but the entire world population. As more acres are highly and sustainably engaged, Deere expects to see that customer outcomes around nitro-

others with sustainable technology across health, energy, mobility, and more.

HOW TO HARNESS IT ALL? For those planning to try to tackle this behemoth, CES is an amazing, exhausting, and truly immersive experience. To make the most out of your tens of thousands of steps, consider the following: 1. Pre-plan & Focus: Do not set foot in Las Vegas without a good game plan. Research exhibitors, and relevant sessions and create a target list (by location) of what you need to see. And don’t miss the CES Innovation Awards showcase. It’s a great collection of the most innovative products and houses some treasures you might otherwise miss. Also, what do you want to come home with? Make sure you know what your goals are for the show—it’s easy to get distracted. 2. Download All the Apps: The CES App is a phenomenal resource for navigating the show, but a girl’s gotta eat and get around, right? Make sure you have ride-share apps like Uber/Lyft downloaded, as well as an app like OpenTable for those hard-to-get reservations. And check out the slew of Vegas apps to entertain you—if you have free time. 3. Get Off the Floor: Most CES networking, business, and fun happen far from the show floor. Leave plenty of time to attend smaller events, offsite brand activations, test drives and yes, this year, see The Sphere. The show, while frenetic, offers a great opportunity to collaborate and learn from true innovators. So, take advantage. Even after 25 years, CES can inspire me as it draws in the best in innovation, while continually adapting to meet the needs of today and tomorrow. January here we come.

gen use efficiency, crop protection efficiency, and CO2e emissions reduction will be enhanced. John Dee re ha s been working with many recipients to ensure that the John Deere Operations Center will be a key enabler for farmers to participate in new market opportunities by providing all the data they need in one convenient place.

CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024 | 17

Access to Technology, Generative AI are Main Themes for CES 2024 BY STEWART WOLPIN CES 2024 is shaping up as a big step forward on the show’s post-pandemic recovery. According to Kinsey Fabrizio, CTA’s SVP for CES & Membership, speaking at CTA’s annual CES press preview, this year’s Las Vegas confab (January 9-12) has already surpassed 3,500 exhibitors, has reached 2.4 million square feet of exhibit space, and show organizers expect more than 130,000 attendees. While encouraging, these metrics still lag slightly behind the last pre-pandemic CES in 2020, which featured 4,400 exhibitors across 2.9 million square feet, and 171,000 attendees. This year’s CES has been dubbed “All Together. All On.” with a focus on three overarching themes: access to technology, part of CTA’s partnership with the UN’s Human Security for All campaign, the growth and adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI), and CTA’s 100th anniversary. While 2024 is an election year, CTA president and

CEO Gary Shapiro doesn’t view CES or technology as a partisan issue. “We divide the world into two types, not Republican and Democrat or not of those who are against us and those who are for us, but those have been to CES and those that have not. Those who have been to CES see the world totally differently. They see the promise of innovation, not just from the biggest companies, not even from smaller companies, but also from people and startups with an idea.” Fabrizio bragged the show will host 800 new exhibitors, “and we’re adding more every single day.” West Hall is “at capacity,” according to John Kelley, CTA VP and CES Show Director, and will be filled with nearly 300 auto and mobility companies including Hyundai and Kia for the first time. C Space is expanding into the Cosmo Hotel, and Shark Tank’s open casting call returns to CES as well with Mark Cuban speaking during the show’s digital health program. Eureka Park at the Venetian will house 1,000 startups alongside more than 20 country pavilions. Oth-

er CES 2024 “hot” categories continue to be digital health, including wearable tech, health tracking, telehealth tools, and food tech; this year’s CES Unveiled press event will feature a new tasting area for “alternative” foods. Shapiro also announced two new keynoters, Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger, and a C-Suite keynote featuring Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel and MediaLink chair and CEO Michael Kassan. There also will be nearly 1,000 speakers across 250 conference sessions, including 11 policy panels that will focus on “setting the guardrails for the innovation industry to balance the need for innovation,” Shapiro notes, recognizing “that government has a legitimate interest in making sure things are done in a way that’s beneficial to their country and their needs.” On the show floor itself, show organizers expect AI to be a pervasive force at the CES 2024. “Generative AI has taken the world by storm and every company is thinking about how to use it,” Shapiro asserts. “Many companies are going to be talking about, introducing, and showing products which take advantage of that. Generative AI is going to be a big, big shift forward for humanity.” To help attendees and exhibitors plan for the show, the CES 2024 app is now available.

Abbott Features AVEIR DR Leadless Pacemaker System BOOTH 8713 Abbott’s AVEIR dual chamber (DR) leadless pacemaker system is, according to the company, the world’s first dual chamber leadless pacemaker to treat people with slow heart rhythms. Roughly one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker, the atrial and ventricular components of AVEIR DR leadless pacemakers can communicate with each other through first-of-its-kind i2i (implant to implant) technology to establish con-

tinuous, synchronized pacing between the right atrium and the right ventricle. AVEIR leadless pacemakers are also engineered to be retrieved should a person’s therapy needs change, or they need a replacement device in the future. AVEIR is a CES 2024 Innovations Awards Honoree in the Digital Health category. To support the dual chamber therapy, each implant communicates beat-to-beat with a paired, co-implanted

device using implant-to-implant (i2i) communication. This novel technology employs low energy, subthreshold pulses between implanted devices using the conductive nature of the body’s blood pool and myocardial tissue. These high frequency pulses of data are delivered concurrently with each locally paced or sensed event, without impact on pacing or intrinsic sensing. Patient therapy can be tailored by implanting an atrial or ventricular device alone, or both combined for dual chamber support. The option to upgrade over time allows you to meet your patient’s needs today and adapt to common disease progression later.

Can Generative AI Transform Virtual Assistants? BY SIMON FORREST, PRINCIPAL TECHNOLOGY ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING Virtual assistants have been in users’ hands for over a decade, following Apple’s introduction of Siri in 2011, and comparatively simple voice interfaces can be traced back even further. Examining device penetration alone, virtual assistants could be considered a success: abundant across consumer electronics, Futuresource’s research shows there are over seven billion devices out in the market today with integrated virtual assistant capabilities, rising to almost nine billion over the next four years. But commercially the situation is very different. Despite years of continual improvements, virtual assistant platform owners faced challenges influencing consumers to routinely engage with monetizable products and services based around voice interfaces. Rudimentary “command and control” interaction dominated, “voice first” conversational interfaces never reached full po-

tential, and it seemed doubtful that the financial investment in virtual assistants as a standalone consumer proposition could ever be fully regained. In our consumer studies on Smart Speaker usage, commercial (revenue-generating) interactions, including online shopping and the ordering of services, now index at eight percent and under; and this is only marginally higher (11 percent) on Smart Displays, confirming that activities most closely associated with monetization are used infrequently or not at all. This realization led Amazon and Google to reconsider their strategies for voice and, as a result, existing assistant platforms fell largely into maintenance mode. Yet we are only halfway through the potential development lifecycle. Undoubtedly, the progress of voice interfaces achieved throughout those years was not entirely forfeited; instead, this forms the backbone of new solutions constructed around artificial intelligence (AI) and neural computation. Today, the leading assistant platform vendors are embarking upon a step-change in the technology landscape, with genera-

tive AI offering the potential to design more engaging and intelligent virtual assistants.

THE INTRODUCTION OF LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS The rise of large language models (LLMs)—which include GPT-4 (upon which ChatGPT is based), Google’s Bard, Amazon’s Burnham, Meta’s Llama and Apple’s rumored Ajax, among several others—is poised to revolutionize the way voice interfaces develop. Additionally, the viral success of ChatGPT, and derivatives like it, have demonstrated the potential for conversational interaction using generative AI. Nevertheless, ensuring that the outputs from generative AI-based assistants are both factual and trustworthy will require significant effort in the future. There are differences in the approach that make LLMs and virtual assistants distinct entities today. LLMs are trained to predict the next word in a sentence based upon patterns of data found in human writing. So, implementations such as ChatGPT possess an enor-

CES 2024 DAILY | JANUARY 9-12, 2024 | 43 mously capable language model but have comparatively limited understanding on how to combine factual information to draw insights and derive accurate conclusions. This has led to “hallucinations,” where ChatGPT (and others) often fabricate responses that look entirely plausible but are actually incorrect. When using LLM-based assistants to solve queries, users are effectively asking “What type of responses are the most likely outcome for questions that look like this?”; it’s a pattern matching exercise. Another disadvantage is that GPT-3 and GPT-4 (upon which ChatGPT is derived) do not constantly learn because the model must be pre-trained on a corpus of data. The server costs and compute time associated with training are not insignificant, hence revisions to the training data sets are relatively infrequent. This is steadily being solved, with GPT-4 now able to reference up-to-date information from the Internet, however this doesn’t entirely solve the problem of hallucinations when factual information is combined inaccurately; indeed, predicting the next word in a sentence is a very different problem to fact checking to derive truthful commentary. Contrast this with virtual assistants that employ speech-to-text, then utilize existing search engine techniques to discover genuine results, before transcribing these back into a voice response using text-to-speech algorithms. The methods here are very different.

A HYBRID APPROACH Amazon have started to integrate large language models (LLMs) into Alexa to expand conversational intelligence but have added this capability—which they call “Let’s Chat”—as separate to the existing intent driven experience. Essentially, there are now two modes of operation for Alexa. The conversational mode allows fluid dialogue around any topic since the AI can access several web services to help it answer queries. Users can pick up a conversation from where they left it earlier, and the AI expands personalization of Alexa using knowledge extracted from previous interactions. The intent model Alexa and LLMbased Alexa will run in parallel as the generative AI technology is steadily improved. Nevertheless, the challenge of merging the two disciplines isn’t insurmountable. It is reasonable to expect a single Alexa environment driven by the LLM within the next 18 months, if not sooner. Google is investing in its own generative technology, called LaMDA, upon which it is developing an assistant called Bard. Again, the most apparent difference to earlier variants of ChatGPT is that Bard had the abili-

ty to include recent events in the responses designed in from the start, given it has access to Google’s vast search engine data repository. Nevertheless, it also suffers from hallucinations in sometimes generating fictional, erroneous, or unsubstantiated information.

encing tasks to run locally. Of course, this is already happening within smartphones for image, video and speech processing—for instance, Samsung’s Bixby and Apple’s Siri. Yet within the next few years, it will become feasible to train generative AI models on con-

‘…within the next few years, it will become feasible to train generative AI models on consumer devices without accessing the cloud, allowing AI processing with lower latency and increased privacy’ TO THE CLOUD AND BACK WITH GENERATIVE AI Training aside, generative AI reverts the industry to using colossal language models not yet optimized to run on consumer hardware. Therefore, cloudbased services are again necessary to run virtual assistants based on AI. Recently it was stated that ChatGPT may cost over $700,000 per day to operate, hence companies using the technology are seeking methods to make integration of generative AI more cost effective across product ecosystems. Meanwhile, the semiconductor industry is making great strides toward building advanced silicon chips for AI. The addition of Neural Network Accelerators (NNAs) allows generative AI infer-

sumer devices without accessing the cloud, allowing AI processing with lower latency and increased privacy. New virtual assistant solutions are becoming multimodal, combining voice conversations with cameras for visual input. These will rely upon the new generation of silicon chips offering multi-core CPUs, graphics hardware (GPUs) not just for visual processing tasks but also executing the complex mathematics associated with AI, alongside dedicated NNAs that can run generative AI tasks fully in hardware. Meanwhile, the neural networks that generative AI creates through training are being steadily optimized, making them smaller and more efficient for running on consumer hardware. We are already seeing the evolution from Large Language Models to what we might call “Small” Language Models, possessing a subset of the vocabulary to become much more lightweight. This could widen the opportunity for application-specific assistants, designed for a smaller set of intents. This could, in turn, bring the industry back full circle to targeted “command and control” voice interfaces embedded into individual devices, but with the added use of generative AI as the baseline technology. Application-specific virtual assistants would enable users to interact verbally with several distinct assistant platforms daily, each of which is skilled in handling different tasks. So, returning to the question posed in the headline of this article: “Can generative AI transform virtual assistants?” We stand at a juncture of amazing technological advancement in conversational interfaces, with billions of dollars being spent on research and development of generative AI. So yes, absolutely the virtual assistant market will be transformed. But does this forthcoming wave of investment expand user engagement to the point where voice-first platforms become truly monetizable? Regrettably, that’s yet to be established.

HEALTH & FITNESS How Far Will the Smart Home Market Go? BY JAMES MANNING SMITH LEAD MARKET ANALYST FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING The smart home has been a market of promise over the last ten years, committed to providing ease, convenience and personalization to our homes. This is being achieved by adding connectivity to products that, for many of us, are already part of our everyday lives. While some have raised questions over the need for the smart home, the opportunity has been delivered: the smart home is now one of the fastest growing home electronics markets in developed nations. But despite increasing levels of ownership, many products in the smart home segment remain in novel stages of development. So the question remains, how far can the smart home market go, and what is driving the growth?

HOME SECURITY 2.0 Protecting the things we value has always been a big business, so it is no surprise that connectivity has become a firm part of the security industry. Whether it’s checking in on our pets, making sure our children are home safely or preventing break-ins, the smart home industry has developed solutions that help to make us feel more secure.

SMARTIFY FOR SMARTIFICATION’S SAKE? As connectivity has become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, many consumer products have been re-made with smart functionality, although some more dubiously than others. As a result, it is no surprise that smart features can be looked at with skepticism. In Futuresource Consulting’s recent Smart Home Consumer Survey, only 36 percent of consumers in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany did not believe that smart home devices were unnecessary or frivolous. However, as people’s lives become more demanding and fears over security and the environment grow, the desire to simplify everyday tasks is reinforced. This year, our research found that simplifying tasks was the most commonly perceived benefit of smart home ownership. From devices that can save time on chores, offer remote home monitoring, or optimize clean energy usage, companies are developing products that have a compelling reason for connectivity. Potential buyers of smart home devices are increasingly recognizing these expanding use cases beyond the novelty.

CES.TECH

ture, it may well become a near-universal feature of the smart home.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL ANGLE Reducing energy consumption is another huge draw of the smart home and is an aspect of smart home product marketing that consumers understand well. This has led to an increasing demand for smart thermostats in Europe, following the substantial increases in energy bills in the past two years. Cost-savings aside, environmentalism is a trend that’s here to stay. For consumers, sustainability has proven to be a hugely important feature of consumer technology. Efficient energy management (i.e., devices that can dynamically charge based on whether affordable or green energy is available) will play a major role in making domestic living sustainable. Combining products such as smart car chargers, heat pumps and smart plugs can offer a wholehouse solution to reducing energy usage and reliance on unsustainable energy sources. Before long, we expect some element of smart energy management to be a feature of most homes in developed economies.

SO, HOW FAR WILL THE SMART HOME MARKET GO?

GETTY IMAGES

Home security is a growing motivator for smart home device purchasing, with reported ownership of security smart home devices in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany growing from eight percent in 2021 to 25 percent in 2023. Within this, smart cameras are reported to have benefited most substantially. With crime and safety (as well as keeping tabs on pets) a constant motivator for purchase, we only expect ownership and demand in this segment to grow. In the fu-

With such a variety of devices on sale, from lightbulbs to robot vacuums to major domestic appliances, numerically there is a huge potential for the market. Around 72 percent of respondents from our Summer 2023 Smart Home Consumer Survey owned at least one smart home device. And once a device becomes owned, appreciated, and a part of everyday life, more soon follow. In developed markets we expect early majority adoption of multiple devices to ramp up in the next five years, with late majority adoption starting before the end of the decade. With so many potential use cases paving the way for an ever-expanding network of smart home products, the prospect of significant levels of adoption is a very real possibility.

XR XR Beyond the Hype BY NIKOLAOS TZOUMERKAS, MARKET ANALYST, FUTURESOURCE CONSULTING

UPCOMING RELEASES DRIVE MARKET BUZZ Futuresource expects a total of ~27m unit shipments in 2024 for AR and VR headsets combined and a CAGR of 52 percent between 2024-2027. With many headsets announced but yet unreleased, expectations for the segment are high. There are currently 13 unreleased standalone VR headsets, six unreleased PC-powered headsets and 13 unreleased AR glasses. Most of the expected headsets have higher resolution and refresh rates, while across the board the prices are lower on average. For example, the ASP of AR glasses in 2023 is close to $560, but most of the unreleased AR glasses are expected to have a starting price between $340-$410. Immersion remains key. In 2024, immersion should remain a key focus for XR professionals. Meta Quest 3 has broken the boundaries of technology that can be achieved in an

GETTY IMAGES

In June 2023, Apple announced a new Mixed Reality (MR) headset called the Apple Vision Pro. Just four days earlier, Meta had announced Meta Quest 3, an important step up from the Quest 2. These announcements were hugely validating for the XR industry, with two of the biggest tech companies making strong investments in new advanced headsets. This positivity should continue: Futuresource believes that in 2024 the industry will edge away from buzzwords like the metaverse and spatial computing and instead develop more relevant use cases. Like every novel technology, XR will take time to develop. But the foundations for a significant new industry have been firmly set, as continuous improvements to hardware help push the technology toward fully immersive and hyper-realistic virtual worlds. Currently, the vast majority of the segment is focused on gaming and entertainment. However, there are numerous case studies demonstrating the value of XR in a wide range of industrial applications, from medicine to sports and virtual workspaces to retail training.

XR headset; in general, screen technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and users are welcoming this improvement. Holographic technology is being slowly integrated into headsets. This development will allow 3D rendering of objects, helping alleviate issues related to motion sickness and eye strain. Plus, the introduction of lighter headsets will be a huge stepping stone for XR. Users will be able to wear the technology for longer by eliminating the risk of physical fatigue caused by weighty headsets. An under-discussed element of XR is audio, which plays a vital role in creating a convincing immersive experience. Lifelike audio is a necessity in emulating a true environment virtually. As is true across countless industries, AI will also play a significant role in XR. AI models can be used to create a more realistic personalised environment and virtual experiences for the user. Similarly, reconstructing human faces into realistic avatars using AI models can make virtual workspaces more appealing because of their realism and immersion capabilities.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME The segment continues to witness limited content, especially when considering the rate headsets are being produced. Users may be reluctant to invest in a headset, given their high selling price and limited selection of games and entertainment options. However, more VR concerts are taking place, with high-caliber names such as T-Pain, Megan Thee Stallion and Aespa hosting virtual events. The high levels of interaction with the artists, reduction of extra costs like transport, food and drinks, as well as the personalization of the visual effects are helping widen the appeal of VR concerts. Familiarity with virtual spaces is slightly more alien to Millennials and older consumers, and Futuresource believes that XR uptake will be ultimately driven by Gen-Z. The pandemic has brought about more demand for virtual environments, helping put XR back on the radar. Indeed, it’s only a matter of time before XR begins to make an impact beyond gaming and entertainment, finding important use cases in education, productivity, and healthcare.

Movano Health Unveils Evie Ring for Women’s Health BOOTH 8610 Movano Health’s Evie Ring, the smart ring designed specifically for women, provides trusted health information for every woman at every stage. An innovative and comfortable form factor, a focus on helping women track and analyze their health and fitness, and an emphasis on big-picture data interpretation rather than individual activity scores set Evie apart from other wearables, providing a valuable new tool for women seeking to take control of their health. Built from the ground up using research that uncovers the differences between men’s and women’s biomarkers as well as interviews with more than 1,000 women about their health and wellness needs, Evie monitors key health and wellness metrics. Biometric sensors track sleep stages and duration, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), respiration rate, skin temperature trends, steps, active minutes, and calorie burn; while users log information ranging from mood and menstrual symptoms, which enables the estimation of periods and ovulation, to illness, stress and alcohol consumption. The Evie Ring is a CES 2024 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Wearable Technologies category.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL MLB’s Go-Ahead Entry refers to the combination of free-flow security screening technology and facial authentication-based gate management, resulting in a fast, hands-free entry into the ballpark. Go-Ahead Entry technology uses a camera that will identify any opted-in fan as a registered member as they walk in—either alone or with their group—automatically scanning tickets once identified. No need to stop or even get a phone out. Fans can now enjoy the ultimate hands-free, free-

f low experience entering the ballpark with their eyes up. Just skip the line and be ready to enjoy the game. safe-living: Age Happily and Safely in Place BOOTH 62833, EUREKA PARK safe-living (formerly Sedimentum), a pioneering and award-winning start-up founded in 2019 and based in Switzerland, is showcasing its contactless, plug-and-play emergency detector device at CES 2024. The emergency device empowers seniors to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible, providing peace of mind for their caregivers. Visitors to CES can discover ways to age happily and safely in place. Based on sophisticated AI technology and a proprietary radar for sensing the tiniest motions, safe-living developed an emergency device that is able to intelligently distinguish between pets, daily activities, or health-threatening events. In case of an emergency, the device autonomously calls for help through identifying situations where someone is helpless. The emergency device is placed on a piece of furniture and operates contactlessly and in a privacy-preserving manner—the device does not incorporate cameras or microphones. Most importantly, users aren’t required to wear any wearables, like pendant alarms, or push any alarm button anymore. Reliably recognizing falls or other health-threatening emergencies in private homes without producing false alerts in a contactless manner has posed significant challenges. Each household is unique, with distinct room layouts and individual living patterns.

safe-living’s contactless, plug-and-play emergency detector device

safe-living has overcome these challenges with its groundbreaking AI and radar technology. As of today, the startup serves several Swiss private households, and most importantly, safe-living has not only saved lives but also provided peace of mind for seniors and their families. What sets safe-living apart is that this solution is truly simple to install and doesn’t require any calibration, which is typically associated with radar-based systems. Through its innovations, safe-living believes it is introducing a paradigm shift in the age-tech market.

Hyundai SCM Enhances Construction Site Safety BOOTH 4517 In a construction-related honor, HD Hyundai’s Smart Collision Mitigation (SCM) is a CES 2024 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility categories. SCM is an active safety system that detects objects around the excavator through sensor fusion of camera and radar. The excavator is equipped with four or more cameras to provide a 360-degree Around View. Machines such as excavators are equipped with four or more cameras to provide a 360-degree view. Using AI technology, the system can selectively detect specific objects. In addition, three wide-angle radar sensors with 180-degree horizontal FOV are used to minimize

FROM RMA TO CTA So how did the RMA evolve into CTA? The first consumer radios went on sale in late 1920 in time for a handful of early adopters to hear returns of the November presidential election in real time. Although radios cost more than $900 in 2023 dollars, by 1924 their annual factory dollar revenue reached nearly a $1 trillion in today’s dollars. More than 175,000 people—including inaugural CTA Hall of Fame inductees Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla—attended the first Radio World’s Fair in New York City in September 1924. The first major technology shift came after WWII with the introduction of television. In 1947, only

blind spots and accurately measure the distance of detected objects. When an object is detected within the warning/danger zone, visual/audible warnings are activated, and the excavator reduces the swing and driving speed and then stops them to prevent accidents. HD Hyundai XiteSolution says it is the first construction manufacturer to use sensor fusion technology to supplement a machine’s cameras and radars. Adding the fusion technology elevates accuracy in the system’s ability to detect obstacles and distance from equipment compared to machines with a single sensor, the company says.

250,000 TV sets were in use; the following year, TV set sales leaped more than 500%, following nearly the same hockey stick adoption course as radio had charted 25 years earlier and establishing a template for nearly every other disruptive tech device since. Adapting itself to the new reality, RMA re-named itself the Radio-Television Manufacturers Association (RTMA) in 1950, updated to the Radio-Electronics Television Manufacturers Association (RETMA) in 1953, just in time for TV sales to surpass those of radio. But the RETMA era didn’t last long, either; in 1957, RETMA evolved into the more encompassing Electronic Industries Association (EIA). With the rise of other commercial, industrial, and military/government electronics, the consumer electronics industry morphed into a division within EIA. In 1967, the Consumer Electronics Group (CEG) of EIA founded CES in two New York City hotels. At its 50th anniversary in 1974, EIA tracked sales of just four major consumer technology product cate-

lergies. Once the user enters a child’s blood information, AI can determine safe consumption levels and potential allergic reactions to allergy-inducing foods like peanuts, eggs, and milk. This offers a convenient way for children and their parents to suffer from food allergies to manage and overcome them through digital oral immunotherapy. The product is a digital treatment using Waycen’s medical big data analysis technology and artificial intelligence algorithm. WAYMED Food Allergy was honored with two CES 2024 Innovation Awards in the Artificial Intelligence and the Software & Mobile App categories.

gories: TV, radio, phonograph players, and audio tape devices. The next 20 years, however, would see perhaps the greatest burst of consumer technology innovation in history, including the compact audio cassette, LCD, telephone answering machines, the cellphone, the VCR, the camcorder, the personal audio player, the microprocessor, the handheld calculator, the personal computer, the video game, the compact disc, GPS, satellite TV, fax machines, digital cameras, solid state storage, HDTV, and the internet. CEG broke off from EIA in 1995 to become the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA), which was redubbed the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) in 1999, and, finally, the Consumer Technology Association-CTA—in November 2015. At CES 2024, attendees will get a lot more granularity of not only the last century of the consumer technology business, but hints of CTA’s next century as well.
