Emmy and Peabody award-winning director—and home theater aficionado—Barry Sonnenfeld delivered the opening keynote Thursday morning at CEDIA Expo 2024. He shared his insights and passion for home cinema and audio technology, along with some hot takes on the issues he sees in the industry.
“I love what you guys do, I love home theaters. I don’t think I’d ever buy a place without a home theater, or I would always put one in,” Sonnenfeld told attendees before addressing his top three concerns from the perspective of a customer and filmmaker.
“Just because you can add resolution, doesn’t mean you should,” Sonnenfeld began, as he expressed his disappointment in studios forcing 4K on filmmakers purely for the sake of marketing. “Advances in technology, programming, and software are not always for the better. Don’t fix what isn’t broken, please!”
Sonnenfeld argued that everything he doesn’t like
about 4K will be worse in 8K. “Actor’s faces will be too sharp, you’ll see the makeup, everything will moire—except sports. If shooting and broadcasting sports in 8K means I can finally see a hockey puck go into a net,” he quipped, “I’m with you.”
Sonnenfeld didn’t pull his punches when it came to his opinion of HDR, either. “Technology is both good and bad and here’s the evil: HDR sucks. I don’t have to tell you how bad MotionFlow and CineFlow are, and I don’t even know why they’re on any television.”
Speaking to his second concern, Sonnenfeld begged for manufacturers and studios to finally find a way to fix sound sync, as he explained his ongoing evolution into a “sound guy” over the picture. “I look for the best sound theater now instead of the best picture. Sound has become incredibly important for me,” Sonnenfeld admitted.
“Finally, it’s all about service,” he concluded. “That’s what we remember with installers. I love my system but hated my installer. So, when the time came to upgrade, I didn’t go back to him, even

BOOTH 1912 Certain technologies really need to be experienced to get a full appreciation of all they can do. Full-color, intelligent lighting certainly fits into that category, and Lutron is back at CEDIA Expo with a new version of the hybrid product display/ experience booth it debuted last year.
“Experiencing our products is so important because when there are automated shades, controls, and light fixtures in a room, it’s the combination of those technologies controlling your experience of light that makes a difference,” says Ben Bard, VP of luxury residential business at Lutron. “That’s something that is hard to get across without experiencing it, so we are absolutely back with the experience booth-style we debuted last year. We’ve refreshed it with new products, and we have a new narrative that tells a story that is timely to what’s going with today’s new lighting Innovations.”
The center section of Lutron’s booth will once again be a showcase for its new product introductions, including the new Ketra D2 and Rania D2
architectural downlights, which have been causing a stir since they were released in May.
Other innovative products on display include a recessed drapery track that leans into the current design-centric trend, along with new finishes for both Palladiom shades and keypads. Also keep your eyes peeled for Lutron’s improvements to its tape light system, as well as its new natural light optimization feature for roller shades.
Those of you with long-time Lutron customers
though he put in a great system.
“If you ask me what I want from my home theater installer, overwhelmingly I would say service and education. I want an installer who will teach every person who lives in a house with a home theater how to use the equipment. You really have to educate the homeowner so that they enjoy the system.”
will want to check out the RPM-to-QS translator for HomeWorks, which allows dealers to update legacy systems without replacing the hardware that is still working.
“RPM is a remote power module that was used as a dimming technology 10 years ago,” Bard explains. “We have been using a DIN technology for several years, but there are still many homes out there that have RPMs deployed because Lutron makes a product that lasts. A lot of the products are still working fine and people love them. From both a sustainability perspective and giving clients access to the new technologies without replacing all that old equipment, this translator allows their systems to keep working for more years—and it creates additional revenue for the integrator.”
In addition to Lutron’s booth, dealers can also visit a separate area called “The Lutron Lab,” where Lutron’s engineers are standing by to show, discuss, and explain the latest technology in a more intimate setting.

The CEDIA Community Town Hall Sponsored by Lutron closed out an excellent opening day of education at CEDIA Expo 2024. The keynote panel, moderated by Amanda Wildman, owner of TruMedia, took attendees on a tour into the past, present, and future of CEDIA, examining the efforts made to further the cause of the custom integrator and install industry with national and state governments, as well as revealing some of the group’s upcoming initiatives to secure the future of the industry.
Wildman was joined onstage by David Weinstein, VP of residential sales, Lutron; Daryl Friedman, global president and CEO, CEDIA; Christine DeJoy, VP of communications, CEDIA; and Paul Dolenc, VP of education, CEDIA.
Recounting the advocacy efforts of the past year, Friedman shared how CEDIA met with political leaders to address The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act and the creation of an “integrator” classification in the SOC system. These efforts are pivotal in gaining support from leaders in Washington “ensuring that the smart home industry continues to thrive and innovate, opening doors for
aspiring professionals and elevating the status of the industry as a whole,” he explained.
The association has made significant expansions in its advocacy efforts over the past year, including engaging in its first in-person lobbying effort in Michigan and opening 2024 applications to its State Captains program, which rallies integrators from each state to act as local leaders on relevant issues impacting the industry.
With an eye to the past, the group is focused on today, announcing an upcoming consumer campaign—complete with videos and other custom assets for members. DeJoy anticipates the program will be ready in this fall, with more information to come.
Raising awareness of what services integrators and installers provide is key to the longevity of the association and the industry itself. A major concern of all integration and installation businesses is finding, training, and retaining top talent—particularly recruiting from the young future workers who may not even know there are opportunities in our industry for them.
Addressing this pressing concern, Dolenc shared some initiatives CEDIA is taking and preparing to assist young people in discovering an exciting future in our industry, including the expansion of collaboration with school counselors, using CEDIA’s Tool Kit to spark interest in youth, and the association’s ongoing behind-the-scenes work to secure government grants and funding to assist new hires with training and education.

Attendees at this year’s CEDIA Expo will no doubt notice the expanded presence of the 8K Association. While the association’s panel on Wednesday primarily dealt with the effect the emergence of 8K has on custom integration sector, Thursday’s panel was a discussion on the format’s content pipeline. “Understanding 8K Content and How It Influences the Viewing Experience” featured award-winning cameraman Bob Gorelick, BZBGEAR’s Eilbron Khoshabeh, and Ravi Velhal, director for global content strategy at Intel. The discussion was guided by Juan Reyes, director of operations at the 8K Association.
According to Khoshabeh, the format’s emergence has seen BZBGEAR pivot to providing transport solutions that support 8K. “Our goal is to by the end of this year have a 16x16 matrix switch that can be used in residential, commercial, broadcast, all distributing 8K content,” he said.
Velhal pointed his recent involvement with the broadcast of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which was broadcast in 8K to multiple countries for the first time. “We did the entire Olympics broadcast in 8K with very minimum latency,” said Velhal. “Live sports is the holy grail of 8K. Our whole job is to get the ecosystem ready so more content producers and system integrators can take this mission forward.”
Gorelick, who has worked behind the camera for smash films such as Pulp Fiction and The Dark Knight, expressed his excitement for what 8K can provide content creators. “On the end-user’s perspective, aside from all the great technical things that 8K gives us as creators, it presents content that is much more immersive to the viewer,” he explained. “We believe it leaves the viewer with a more lasting impression.”
Beyond its panel discussions, the 8K Association is sponsoring a demonstration area located in Booth C919 on the CEDIA floor, complete with compatible televisions, projectors, processors, and other devices. The nonprofit association has also unveiled an 18-page white paper that takes a closer look at the technology, science, content, and business strategies behind the 8K viewing experience. The 8K Association will be making the paper available, free of charge, to representatives across the industry.
BOOTH 2502 Jeff Goldstein, head of sales for Sony’s CI channel, provides insights into the company’s “Cinema is Coming Home” theme.
What are Sony’s priorities and goals for CEDIA Expo?
Jeff Goldstein: Our focus this year is to demonstrate how Sony’s involvement in every stage of the content creation process connects to our “Cinema Is Coming Home” theme. Sony makes the tools that enable content creators to deliver their vision of how music, movies, television programming, and sports can be delivered faithfully into your home. We are highlighting this with incredible demonstrations in our booth at CEDIA this year.
What products can dealers experience at the Sony booth?
JG: A full array of Sony consumer and professional products that lend themselves to the custom install
and resimercial integration market are here. We have two theaters in the booth highlighting different large-screen video technologies, and our “ES Experience” room is in the lobby of the convention center, demonstrating the incredible audio quality of our ES line of receivers.
In terms of trends, which Sony products are most in demand from integrators?
JG: Generally speaking, there is demand for all of our home entertainment and professional products in the CI market. The standouts right now are our new BRAVIA 9 series of MiniLED TVs that represent a significant step forward in backlight technology, as well as strong demand for our market-leading front projector products.
What will dealers who are interested starting to sell and install Sony products learn at the CEDIA exhibit?
JG: Dealers visiting the Sony booth this year
will learn what’s behind our “Cinema is Coming Home” theme in the booth. We explain how Sony makes the tools that enable content creators to express their artistic vision, and how Sony’s consumer products deliver that vision faithfully into consumers’ homes with the high-performance home entertainment products we make.
Both at CES and at an integrator event at Sony Pictures Studios, Sony has been focused on the path from content creator to the home entertainment system. How will that be portrayed at CEDIA Expo?
JG: The booth is the embodiment of that concept. We will display the key products that are used in capturing and creating content, and visitors can take a “tour” of how our technology brings all the excitement and passion into all the products we make that support high-performance home entertainment.

BOOTH 3520 Just Video Walls is launching its new brand, Lunar Walls, set to propel direct-view video
walls into more and more customer homes and businesses. But to do so, JVW wants to hear from its dealers first. In an unprecedented move, dealers will help the company set margins, price points, and validate the go-to-market strategy for the brand. This includes the “Ledge,” a pre-packaged MicroLED monitor in standard sizes up to an impressive 163 inches.
The Lunar product line is ideal for entry level customers looking to start simple on their first video wall experience. They require no external processor and need only a single power circuit.
However, they are still packed with the features that modern consumers look for such as HDR, 4K resolution, and a Bluetooth remote.
BOOTH 1512 OvrC is celebrating its 10-year anniversary at CEDIA this year.
Snap One’s cloud-based platform provides single-portal access to all customer accounts, and a suite of streamlined processes and cloud-based tools for configuration, deployment, diagnostics and troubleshooting, whether for a single device or a complex system. Advanced Remote Access provides technicians with a secure connection that provides device access and control functionality as if they were locally connected. These powerful functions, accessible from anywhere, can greatly reduce service calls and on-site visits, saving time, money and frustration for both the integrator and the end-user.
In addition to expanding the capabilities of OvrC, Snap One has also been improving the existing tools. OvrC’s full potential is best demonstrated by the fast and efficient deployment process to setup and configure MoIP video distribution systems, the Luma X20 IP cameras and NVRs, and the Luma Bridge.

BOOTH 3543 Inspired by the timeless appeal of Venetian blinds, Hunter Douglas Aria Soft Blinds blend the classic appeal of traditional blinds with the light-transforming precision of shades.
Aria features distinctive soft ellipse-shaped vanes with dual-opacity capabilities to give homeowners precise control over natural lighting. To filter light, a nonwoven fabric is placed over a clear film. For dimming, an opaque darkening film extends partially across one side of the transparent film. When the slats are tilted up, the dark liner faces indoors, creating a stronger dimming effect. utilize manufacturer reps as a valuable resource for support, as well as to reach out to organizations like the Home Technology Association and CEDIA. “One thing we can count on with technology is that it’s forever changing,” she said, “so continuing to educate yourself is the best way to start getting involved.”
McGregor Bennett added that the growing number of technology experience centers can help designers learn about options currently available on the market. “Many of the integrators in the community are starting to build really beautiful experience centers,” explained Bennett. “These are often open and available to you in the design/build community to bring your clientele in and see what’s possible with technology without having to commit at the time.”
However, McGregor Bennett cautioned emerging designers that communication with integrators is key. “I want to make sure you understand that the integrators are there to help you, support you, and collaborate with you,” asserted Bennett. “They are not there to take over the project. By all means, if you get that sense, it’s a conversation you need to have, so they can understand the roles in the room and the hierarchy.”
Elizabeth Lord-Levitt of Built4Design Residential Academy also reminded attendees that clients don’t know what they don’t know. “Your goal as a designer is to be their advocate and say, ‘Is this important to you? This is a great resource to determine if it is, and if it fits into your budget.’”

Integrators and architects must navigate a complex working relationship, one that involves a delicate balancing act that ultimately needs to result in a satisfied client. Often, this relationship can feel like an afterthought, a transactional arrangement that comes with the territory. But according to the speakers at Wednesday’s “Integrators and Architects Forever: A

Beneficial Friendship” panel, viewing the relationship through that lens is a grave mistake.
The three working partners on stage included architect Michael Gooden, founder of Bespoke Home Technology TJ Goodwin, and sales director at Texas Lighting Colin Smith. While they may come from different sectors of the industry, they agree on one fundamental rule: AV and lighting should be carefully considered and planned before a project even begins. How can such a thing be accomplished? By putting time and effort into building relationships.
“Early on in my career, I think AV was a bit of an afterthought,” admitted Gooden. “After a few rough projects and lessons learned, we really saw value in building relationships that spanned across many projects.”
Gooden gleaned from his years of experience that AV should be considered from the beginning stages of a new project. “Where we’ve had success is partnering with integrators early on in the design process,” he noted. “We will typically present schematic designs to the client, and that stage is typically when we will engage with AV consultants.”
From his side of the equation, Goodwin explained the value of establishing a long-term partnership with an architect. For one, being brought in early on a project can allow for thoughtful design choices that can keep tech from being distracting.
Smith echoed the sentiment, stating that he prefers to be brought on board as early as possible. Working with Gooden and Goodwin, in his experience, allows for collaboration that produces the best result for the end client.
“Communication solves everything, and the sooner you get everybody together, the more you can discuss as a group. Things that I do affect what TJ does, and everything we do affects Michael,” he explained.
BOOTH 1343 A comprehensive, highly flexible and user-friendly range, Monitor Audio’s new Gold Series 6G comprises six distinctive loudspeakers. Each model addresses a clearly defined user requirement and adds innovative acoustic technologies.
Gold Series 6G boasts a totally new metal cone technology in the form of Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology (HDT), which draws on the RDT III cones utilized in the ground-breaking Hyphn and the flagship Platinum Series 3G. The HDT cone employs a new hexagonal pattern to disrupt symmetries in the cone breakup, creating a cone that shifts the frequency up by 10 percent compared to the RST II cones found on the Silver Series 7G.
Additional features include a revised version
of Monitor Audio’s MPD III (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) transducer, which delivers precise highfrequency sound with greater consistency, clarity, and accuracy, and new crossovers optimized for in-room performance, which is particularly important for the new On-Wall 6G model, where typical usage is closer to Custom Install than traditional Hi-Fi.
