PMC Launches New Custom Install Loudspeakers

Attendees poured through the doors of the Colorado Convention Center yesterday morning and out onto the CEDIA Expo show floor to see the future of residential technology. But this year’s show itself is a future the organization could hardly have imagined when it held its first gathering 30 years ago. “There are so many great things that have happened over the 30 years,” said Tabatha O’Connor, CEDIA’s global president and CEO. “We have so many core, key people from the very beginning still engaged, bringing in not just the next generation, but several generations behind them that are picking up this wonderful industry.” The inaugural show in 1989 drew some 500 attendees to Amelia Island, Florida, to see tabletop displays from select pioneering companies; this year, O’Connor said the organization is expecting more than 20,000 visitors and around 500 exhibitors as the event continues to grow. “We won’t know the official numbers until after the show is over, but we are up on our attendance from the same time last year, and we have more exhibitors on the show floor than we did last year,” O’Connor said. “What I am seeing is a much bigger presence from so many key manufacturers, and also our Innovation Alley: we have 22 brand-new companies coming to the (continued on page 60)

Keynote Challenges Attendees to Rethink Ideas

Today’s CEDIA Talks

By Matt Pruznick If you’re like most people in business, you probably keep a close eye on your return on investments. But have you ever thought about your return on learning? In his keynote speech Wednesday evening, inventor and bestselling author Luke Williams urged attendees to re-examine the way they approach the ideas that drive their businesses. “We’ve got plenty of tools for generating new ideas,” Williams said. “Where are our tools for helping us escape from our old ideas? Where are our tools for helping us change our current ideas long before they actually need changing?” In an energetic, playful presentation, Williams strode around the room and challenged the audience to think about ideas as “recipes that you use in your business to rearrange the resources you have to create new value and wealth.” In this metaphor, new technologies and business dynamics are new ingredients with which companies can cook. “Who has the best recipe in what you’re doing?” Williams asked. “You may think you may have the best recipe, but if that recipe was created even three years ago, it is impossible that it’s the best recipe; it’s impossible that it’s extracting maximum value from the ingredients available today.” Williams went on to identify impediments to disruptive thinking, such as complacency and arrogance,

Luke Williams and “incremental ideas,” or ones that simply support current structures and are most likely to be put into action. “We know that if you’re only embracing incremental change to the way you’re thinking about your business and the industry, you’re getting yourselves in an incredibly dangerous position because you’re on a path that’s getting narrower and narrower,” he said. So how can businesses change before it’s too late? “It’s your job as business owner or manager to introduce deliberate discontinuity into your system,” Williams said. “The discontinuity is what constantly restructures your existing ideas to make sure they’re extracting maximum value from later arriving ingredients.” To do this, businesses must incorporate a mechanism for challenging their fixed ideas—including introducing ideas that might even kill your existing business. “When you, as a business, review these ideas, most of them are not going to get implemented,” he said. However, it’s these ideas that are most valuable, as they force companies to rethink who they are and what they do. “Every time you review a discontinuous idea, it accelerates your learning,” he concluded. “And there’s never been a more exciting time for you to be thinking about all of this, and the potential around you.”

BOOTH 2513 Sony held a press conference minutes before the show floor opened yesterday morning to announce its latest product offerings and continued support for the custom installation community. On the product front, Sony’s Crystal LED display system is now available for home installation. The Crystal LED can display 8K HDR video content and beyond—up to 16K—in sizes from 110-inches diagonal to 63-feet. The version on display in Sony’s booth is 16 feet x 9 feet and is now available. Sony also unveiled updates for two of its 4K Theater Projector models. The VPL-VW5000ES and VPL-VW885ES will be newly equipped with Digital Focus Optimizer and Dual Contrast control, currently offered for VPLVW995ES. BOOTH 4343 As a premier provider of home security, entertainment and control systems for new home builds, Texas-based HomePro knows that technology showrooms won’t persuade every client to make a purchase. Earlier this year, HomePro began supplementing its showrooms with Modus VR, a tool that allows home theater integrators to design virtual replicas of prospective clients’ rooms and give virtual reality walkthroughs to raise excitement and help determine the best design and components for each unique space. HomePro tested several virtual reality design solutions, but found that only Modus VR provides both an intuitive setup process

and real-time responsiveness that enables redesigning the VR environment right in front of clients. At first, some employees were hesitant to leverage the VR software, but then one team member sold a media room to a client that nobody expected would pull the trigger, and it caught on like wildfire. The company plans to train all sales staff to use Modus VR so they can operate it on-demand, and says it takes as little as an hour to get a handle on the basics of guiding a virtual demo, changing properties and moving virtual items. They currently have 10 templates for different rooms that reflect their home builds.

CEDIA Reaches Out to Next-Generation Workforce When almost a third of respondents to CEDIA’s 2018 “Size and Scope of the Residential Technology Systems Industry” survey said attracting and retaining qualified workers was a challenge, CEDIA heard the message loud and clear. The concern was the largest—by far—for home integration employers, and it further bolstered CEDIA’s ongoing resolve to develop solutions to load-up the home technology professional pipeline. A recently competed pilot program pushes CEDIA’s efforts forward in a big way. The 12-week CEDIA Electronic Systems Integration Technician Training provides key foundational skills for future integrators, from recent high school graduates to those looking to shift career gears. The pilot phase was hosted at CEDIA’s training facility at its global headquarters in Fishers, Indiana. The inaugural class consisted of eight graduates, two of whom were hired before coursework was even com-

plete. By graduation night, seven trainees had earned Electronic Systems Professional Alliance (ESPA) Electronic Systems Technician (EST) credentials and six earned CEDIA Electronic Systems Certified (ESC) credentials. Brett Jagger, a student originally from California who now lives in Danville, Indiana, said the education feeds on his interests of computers and home audio and video. “I’ve never really worked in my passion before, and when I heard about this class opening up, it sounded like a great chance,” said Jagger, who was hired by a central Indiana residential tech company. Nate Raab added the program emphasized the importance of a valuable customer experience. “The instructors are doing a great job covering more than what’s in the book, more than what’s in the PowerPoint presentation.” The training he’s received through the pilot, he said, has helped put some long-

term goals into focus. “I’d like to make it a career. I’ve just started a job with an AV integrator locally, and I hope to remain there for the next 30 or 40 years, with any luck.” Ultimately, CEDIA plans to roll the program out nationally through partnerships with technical schools, trade schools and community colleges. One of CEDIA’s top strategic objectives is workforce development and the successful completion of the pilot program marks a major milestone. “This program is really geared towards making sure that folks we’re attracting to the industry have the skillset they need to be fully contributing members to the employers that hire them,” said CEDIA’s director of workforce development Tommy Tabor. He added that the results of the pilot program are being evaluated as an effort to scale it up for national expansion continues to take shape with CEDIA’s network of training partners.

lighting conditions. The exciting thing about this is the price—it starts at under $5,000 for the 100-inch, which could bring ultra-short-throw projection to a much wider audience. Following my video-heavy morning, I stopped to see Harman’s booth—home of Arcam, Lexicon, Revel,and JBL Synthesis. Arcam has several new AVRs that push the Dolby Atmos channel count up to 16, and there is a new Lexicon SL-1 speaker system that utilizes 33 speaker drives and DSP beam steering technology to ensure a stereo sweet-spot wherever you are sitting. Unfortunately for me, the display was static and I couldn’t test the audio. I was super impressed with the new JBL Synthesis processor and AVR, both featuring 16-channel processing capability and tons of great features like Dirac Live, advanced DSP processing and the latest version of Lexicon’s Logic16 upmixer. Both new Synthesis units

CEDIA 2019 is officially underway and I spent every minute of the first day walking up and down aisles, stopping in booths, chatting with old friends and checking out demos looking for the coolest new products I could find on the floor. My day began at a press preview breakfast in the LG booth where they unveiled a new 88-inch, 8K OLED panel that looked absolutely amazing, but came with a wallet-puckering price of $29,999. The set utilizes a new a9 Gen 2 Intelligent processor designed for 8K and also features all the expected technologies like Google Assistant, Alexa, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. It also incorporates pixel level dimming for stunning black levels. If you’ve got a spare 30-large lying around, the OLED88Z9PUA isn’t a bad place to spend it. For the slightly less endowed of wallet, LG also demonstrated a 75-inch 8K TV incorporating the companies NanoCell technology for $4,999. My next stop was Sony where the company officially announced the immediate availability of its Crystal LED Display video wall which is scalable from 109-inch to 65-feet diagonal. At the show, reps from Sony demonstrated the 4K resolution 219-inch panel (16-feet Legrand AV’s booth, home of Luxul, Sanus, Middle Atlantic and more x 9-feet) … and it looked fantastic. There are other premium features on the mount that will make it something you should definitely check out. I spent a fair bit of time in the afternoon at the Barco booth, where I met up with many of my hosts from the U.K. trip I took a few months back. They were demonstrating their new projector with a full suite of Meridian in-wall digital loudspeakers and a new Steinway-Lyngdorf processor. On tonight’s agenda is another Sony event, a Pro Source event and then the Control4 dealer party! It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.
