Fryeburg Academy Students Among Top Performers in 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program

overseeing admissions and marketing, campus facilities, the school’s food service, I.T., and working closely with the current Head of School, Erin Mayo. He has exhibited success at every level.”
Mr. Manning has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Environmental Science from The George Washington University and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Maine, and he’s been a key developer and champion of experiential learning initiatives at the Academy. In recent years, Joe’s community engagements have included terms on the board of directors for Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation and the Tin Mountain Conservation Center.
“Maria and I are extremely excited about this opportunity,” reflects Manning on his appointment. “As longtime community members, we know the Academy’s incredible impact on so many students. I am honored to have been chosen to serve as Fryeburg Academy’s next head of school and look forward to leading in its next chapter.”
The next six months will be used as a planning phase to ensure an organized leadership transition, with Mr. Manning stepping into the new role at the beginning of the Academy’s 232nd year of operating on July 1st, 2023. He, his wife Maria, and their four children will reside on campus and continue their full engagement in campus life.

Fryeburg Academy Students Among Top Performers in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program

Fryeburg Academy is pleased to announce that May Ki-ok “May” Shin has been named a Semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program, and that Kyungyoon “Yuna” Lee has been named a Commended Student. High school juniors entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). According to May Shin ’23 the College Board, more than 2 million students took the PSAT in 2021; both young women placed among the top 50,000 takers of this test.
Shin is part of a nationwide pool of 16,000 Semifinalists that represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and that includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. She has the opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete to receive a National Merit Scholarship.
Lee will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, but she is one of 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation being thus recognized for exceptional academic promise.
Shin is the daughter of Sunkyung Hwang and Kiseub Shin, and Lee is the daughter of Hyosook Chung Yuna Lee ’23 and Byungirl Lee. Both young women are from South Korea and attend Fryeburg Academy as part of its boarding program.
