Since I had the chance to sit down with Billy Kemper and hear his story firsthand, I got chicken skin listening to what he’s been through—his battles in life, his devotion to family, and the massive, intense moments he’s faced in the ocean. Because of that, my vote was for the colossal wave that now lives as a two-page spread in his feature story on page 28. Power and perseverance—two words that truly define both the man and the spirit of this magazine.

The art director, John Weaver, along with photo editor and chief water photographers Brian and Brent Bielmann, had a different vision for the cover. In the end, they convinced me that the Jaws shot would have even greater impact as a two-page spread, and once that decision was made, the deadlock was broken.

That’s how we landed on this absolute gem—captured just weeks ago by Brent Bielmann at Banzai Pipeline. In this moment, Kemper exemplifies precision and perfection— two words we can add to power and perseverance.

Stoked to have caught up with Billy Kemper recently to bring you his story as one of this month’s main features.

A true champion on multiple fronts, Kemper is massively respected in the world of surfing. His journey is one of perseverance, grit, and triumph—read on to understand just how deep that statement goes.

Makai McNamara, son of Pipeline icon Liam McNamara, is known for charging the heaviest waves of the season. But even the best can get caught. On a late takeoff (as usual), Makai stuck the drop, but as the wave pitched, he ditched sideways and got worked. The lineup and beach went into full rescue mode as his board surfaced—but he didn’t.

Face down, blood visible from shore, it was a terrifying moment. Surfer Hunter Rainis reached him first, followed by his brother Landon, Eli Olson, and a crew of fellow surfers and water safety personnel. Watching them fight to bring him in was gut-wrenching. A father myself, and close friend of the family, I can’t even describe the level of anxiety and fear in that moment. Seeing him carried off the beach was heartbreaking—but I’m beyond relieved and grateful to say that Makai pulled through.

Freesurf also spotlights Maui’s rising wahine talent, Nora Liotta. With one of the most explosive forehand snaps in the game, Liotta is making her mark and positioning herself as a serious contender for a WSL berth.

We’ve got action from the perennial Hale’iwa International, the WSL Pipe Masters, and an inside look at the next generation of Hawai’ian juniors battling for spots on the Hawai’i Surf Team.

This surf season has been nothing short of exceptional— arguably a “golden era” in Hawai’i. the past six weeks since our last issue, we’ve seen no fewer than a dozen West by Northwest swells lighting up our shores. Sunset served up prime west peaks nearly a dozen times in a two-week span, while favorable winds delivered a fiveweek stretch of world-class, big-wave conditions unlike anything seen in decades.

We never truly know when our time is up. Watching this whole scene go down really shuffled my perspective on how truly precious every breath we take really is. And that is not to say we as humans should not take chances.

On the contrary, while there is a balance, life is all about making moves, taking chances and pursuing the passion and goals that burn within each one of us! We all know Makai is gonna get right back up on that bicycle and charge again in this dangerous arena. And that's ok. Huge respect to that, in fact. This was a sobering reminder to live life pono and cherish every moment.

Pipeline, in particular, was both extraordinary and unforgiving. Alongside some of the most jaw-dropping performances in recent memory came some brutal wipeouts. Three highly respected wave warriors paid the price. Hard-charging Tahitian tube specialists Eimeo Czermak and Lucas Godfrey were both sidelined— 18

As a journalist, publisher and surf enthusiast for most of my adult life, I have also been shooting and editing video and images for nearly 30 years. I suppose I could describe myself as a surf historian as well. Last summer I was going through some unlogged mini dv tape shot at 1-2 foot Vals Reef and I came across a clip logged as “groms crashing”, or something like that. Curious, I opened it up and the “groms” were none other than Billy Kemper and John John Florence. They were about 8 or 9 years old.

Fast forward 25 years or so and Kemper and Florence are still sparring partners and while Florence has mastered many accolades in all surfing conditions, Kemper has undeniably made his mark purely in waves of consequence.

Billy Kemper is a name synonymous with the raw power and competitive spirit of big wave surfing. Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Billy's connection to the ocean runs deep, beginning at a tender age with his family and quickly growing into a passion pursuit that would define his life. Throughout his career, he has established himself not only as one of the world’s premier big wave surfers but as a figure who embodies resilience, focus, and the undying will to push the limits of the sport. He is particularly known for his commanding performances at some of the world’s most challenging breaks, including Jaws, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach, where he has been able to harness both the physical and mental fortitude required to conquer the biggest waves on earth.

BILLY KEMPER ML: You mentioned Eric, and he seemed to have a significant impact on you. Can you tell us more about that?

Kemper’s journey to the top of the surfing world has been marked by a series of personal and professional challenges that would have derailed lesser athletes. From losing his brother at a young age to overcoming nearcareer-ending injuries, Billy has proven time and time again that the true measure of a champion lies in the ability to rise from adversity, both in the water and in life.

Billy’s story is not just about athleticism, but about how he has navigated life’s most difficult moments with an unyielding determination. His ability to balance the thrill of competitive surfing with the deeper, more personal connections to his family and community is what makes his journey unique. Billy remains humble, acknowledging his roots and the mentors who shaped his life, all while setting a powerful example for the next generation of surfers.

Now, as a family man his journey exemplifies what it means to be not only a champion in the water but a true champion in life.FSM

Billy Kemper: Yeah, Eric was a huge influence on me. He was 10 years older than me, and he was like a superhero in my eyes. I always saw him as someone who just had this energy that others gravitated towards. He was a superstar even from a young age, and I admired everything about him. He won national titles, and I was always in awe of how successful he was. We were really close, and I remember moving to the North Shore (of ʻOahu) to help him out before he passed away. It was a tough time, but I think it shaped me in ways that I didn’t fully understand at the time. I grew up with a lot of adversity, but Eric’s memory and my connection to him have kept me going.

ML: I can imagine that was incredibly hard. How did it affect you personally and professionally?

ML: Billy, tell me about the first time you ever remember riding a wave.

Billy Kemper: Losing Eric was a game-changer in my life. I was only eight years old, and before that, my parents had gotten divorced, and I had lost my step-sister. It was a lot to handle for a young kid. But through it all, I had a lot of love and support from my mom, my family, and the community here. My mom was an incredible support, and my older brother Carl really stepped up for me as well. Even through all the challenges, I’m grateful for what I learned from those tough times. Those experiences pushed me to dig deep and persevere, and in many ways, they are the foundation of my success as a pro surfer.

Billy Kemper: Ah, I was probably around three or four years old, but the memory that stands out the most is being on my brother Eric’s surfboard.

I don’t remember much from that young, but I do remember looking up at Ho’okipa, and I remember wanting to be out there with my brother, Eric. He was the one I looked up to, and I just wanted to surf with him. I was in awe of him and his friends like Kaimana Henry and Ty Van Dyke—those guys were all like my big brothers too. That early bond with my brother Eric was the foundation of my love for surfing.

ML: You’ve overcome quite a bit in your career, including some life-threatening injuries. What drives you to keep going even after such adversity?

Billy Kemper: I think it comes down to surviving.

Growing up, I went through a lot of hardship—losing my brother, my step-sister, and watching my mom battle cancer. When I look back on it, the injuries I’ve faced in my career, like the one in Morocco, seem like a walk in the park. My mom fought for her life.

That perspective has really shaped my mindset.

Coming back from my injury in Morocco, where I blew out my knee and pelvis, was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I kept my head down, focused, and just wanted to get back to surfing Jaws the way I love to surf it. It wasn’t about winning—it was about being able to do what I love again.

ML: Jaws has been a huge part of your career.

What is it about that place that makes it so special for you?

Billy Kemper: Jaws is everything. It's not just a wave: it’s a part of who I am. It’s like the Colosseum. It’s a place where history is made, and it’s full of power and energy. I’ve got my brother’s ashes and my mom’s ashes out there, so every time I’m out there, it’s more than just surfing. It’s personal. I’ve watched the pioneers of big wave surfing—guys like Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, do incredible things out there, and they were like superheroes to me.

So every time I surf Jaws, I feel connected to that history and to my family.

ML: And how about the Pipeline?

Billy Kemper: Pipeline is the best wave in the world, no doubt, but it’s also one of the most dangerous.

Over the years, I’ve seen a shift in the respect and understanding of the lineup, especially with all the new faces coming in. It’s not about just getting in the water and riding the wave, it’s about earning your place in the lineup. It’s something that I think is getting lost nowadays. When I was growing up, there was a pecking order. It was about respect.

I think it’s important for everyone to understand where they belong and to spend time at different spots before they take on the big wave at Pipeline.

It’s a matter of knowing what you’re capable of and respecting the wave and the people who have put in the time before you.

BILLY KEMPER ML: You’ve spoken before about the feeling of being in the barrel. What’s so special about that moment for you?

Billy Kemper: The barrel is like nothing else. It’s the one place where time stands still. For me, it’s where everything else fades away, and I’m just in this vortex of energy. I think every athlete has that place where they get into the flow state, whether it’s hitting a home run, knocking someone out in the cage, or surfing a wave. For surfers, it’s that moment when you’re in the barrel. It’s a unique feeling that’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it, but it’s a powerful place to be.

ML: You’ve been through so much, but now you’re in a much better place with your family. What does your life look like now?

Billy Kemper: Honestly, it’s a dream come true. I’ve got four amazing kids, a beautiful wife who runs her own business, and we’re raising them here on the North Shore. It’s everything I could have wanted. Life’s been good to me, and I’m just grateful for what I have now. I don’t take anything for granted, and I try to live every day like I’m still that kid who dreamed of surfing Sunset and Pipeline. Even now, I’m still working hard, still dreaming, and still living that dream.

ML: Finally, what’s your message to the next generation of surfers coming up?

Billy Kemper: I’d say, don’t rush it. Put in the time, and earn your place. Surfing isn’t just about what you can do on the board. It’s about respect, community, and patience. Take the time to learn, to grow, and to understand the waves you’re riding. If you put in the work and stay true to yourself, everything else will fall into place.

Right off Hana Highway of the North Shore of Maui, a leggy bombshell blonde stands at Ho’okipa lookout, hand like a visor sheltering her gaze from the sun, squinting bravely at the horizon. A few locals walk by with friendly waves and smalltalk, but anyone who doesn’t know Nora personally can’t take their eyes off her. She’s a walking cliché, a quintessential girl raised in Hawaii-- tanned, athletic, sun-bleached hair. The type the younger generations of girl groms idealize, and the one the boy groms have crushes on.

The attention goes unnoticed, mostly because Nora has only one priority, and that’s to get in the water. She paddles out to her home break, a slice of what’s sacred on her island in the middle of the Pacific. She’s been surfing Ho’okipa since she was 10, a late bloomer compared to the deep field of up-and-coming ladies. Yet for Nora, the ocean and her home in Maui is like a hole in the sky,

the place she goes to escape gravity. Surfing is where she finds herself, separate from the shadow of her older sister, separate from her family, separate from pressures and expectations of succeeding. The grueling life of a surfer hasn’t worn on her; it’s only strengthened her love for the sport. Because surfing isn’t just part of who she is, it’s also who she hopes to become.

Nora’s story starts differently than most. Although she grew up in Maui, it hasn’t always been home for the Liotta family.

Unlike a lot of surfing families, the Liotta’s didn’t move to Maui until Nora was 10. She doesn’t have the typical beginning, like most of her competitors, where they learned to surf on a Wavestorm in diapers. Nora popped up on her first wave when she was 10, and she had to be coaxed by her Mom to even try. “My sister and I had to be bribed with shaved ice 56

to go surfing. But after that, we were hooked. We didn’t need to be bribed.” Nora’s parents were both avid surfers, where their love story began in the lineup surfing in Santa Cruz, California. “My parents were basically die-hard surfers, and my Dad was always excited about the idea of living by the ocean, surfing and teaching his kids how to surf.” When a job opportunity came for Nora’s Dad in Maui, the decision to move across the Pacific Ocean was an easy one.

Nora competed in her first contest that first year, Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem at Ho’okipa Beach Park. Despite not having an understanding how contests even worked, she finished an impressive second. From that day she decided she wanted to compete and put everything into her surfing. Yet she wasn’t alone: her older sister, Anya, was also a talented grom. Just like Andy and Bruce Irons, with maybe a little less tension, they pushed each other to be better surfers. When asked about her relationship with her sister, she had nothing but kindness and gratitude to express, yet she did have a slight epiphany. Although her sister still surfs and is connected to the sport, it’s Nora that has made a name for herself. Breaking away on the competitive circuit, so to speak. “I’ve always wanted it really bad. Maybe more than anyone I grew up surfing with because they wanted other things. As we’ve gotten older, I’ve started to do my own thing, and surfing kind of gave me my own identity. I can be my own person, do my own thing and have my own goals.”

The Liotta family is a tight-knit clan, and they have played a big role in her career, with a lot of sacrifices. Nora’s Dad got a job with Hawai’ian Airlines to help subsidize airfare and travel, and Nora pays for most of the costs of contests and travel herself. While she expressed immense gratitude for her sponsors, she has yet to secure a major one. Herdad, Pete, talked a bit about the sacrifice.

“She does it on her own. She works for her Mom who’s a private chef when Nora’s home, and she pays for a lot of it herself. We help her when we can. She does it [the traveling] pretty cheap compared to some other surfers.”

Competitive success will hopefully change all of this.

Nora has a lot of momentum in contests. She’s been turning heads since 2021, where she finished 2nd at Papara Pro Junior Tahiti, 1st at Rip Curl’s Grom 2021 in Florida, and 4th at the 2021 US Surfing Championships at Lower Trestles. While the transition from junior level contests to the qualifying series and pro-level has had its challenges, success started to line up in 2023. Nora broke out with an impressive victory at Sunset Pro, finished 2nd at U.S. Air Force Super Girl Surf Pro, and 3rd at Haleiwa Pro. While she’s had a lot of success and has an impressive resume, she approaches all of this with humility. “Honestly, the last couple of years transitioning from being a junior into the pro level have been my biggest challenge. The QS and Challenger series have been a hard adjustment for me, especially mentally. I went through so much loss,

and it was hard to find my groove again. In juniors I was around for so long and was at the top of my rank, and when I moved up to pro level I had already put myself at the bottom. I had so much self-doubt. I’m still trying to overcome my mental state, not letting it determine my worth as a person.”

Like any athlete, the mental game can be as tough as the physical, and Nora is putting in the work to improve her mindset. She’s aware of the power of positive self-talk. “Not doubting myself is a huge part of it. I try not to focus on the other girls in my heat or think about them. Everyone is basically doing the same thing, so it’s really just a competition against yourself.”

Despite the challenges of transitioning to the pro level and the financial sacrifices, Nora is incredibly tenacious. Though slightly soft spoken with a sweet demeanor, inside of her is a hungry wolf. Inside of her is a vision of what’s possible, and what’s on the horizon for her career. “I hope that in the coming years I’m proud of my surfing. You know, the end goal is to qualify for the World Tour, but I want to enjoy the process. Enjoy every moment, make friends, travel the world and live the dream.”

Tyler Wright (AUS) and Barron Mamiya (HAW) claimed victory at the Lexus Pipe Pro, the opening event of the 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT). Wright defeated reigning World Champion Caitlin Simmers (USA), while Mamiya successfully defended his title against Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) in a dramatic Final.

Throughout the event, Wright’s barrel-riding was exceptional. She eliminated Lakey Peterson (USA) in the Semifinals with an 8.67 ride and outmaneuvered reigning World Champion Caroline Marks (USA) in the Quarterfinals.

Finals Day featured clean four-to-six-foot waves with light offshore winds, creating ideal conditions for Backdoor barrels and occasional Pipeline bombs.

Simmers, who held the Yellow Jersey for months, delivered a standout performance. In the Quarterfinals, she eliminated close friend Sawyer Lindblad (USA) before battling Molly Picklum (AUS) in a thrilling Semifinal.

In her third Pipeline Final, two-time World Champion Tyler Wright secured her 17th CT victory, reclaiming the Yellow Leader’s Jersey. Wright, who won at Pipeline in 2021 but lost the 2023 Final, overcame defending champion Simmers this time.

Picklum started strong, but Simmers responded with an 8.17 before threading a long Backdoor barrel for a 9.50— the event’s highest women’s score. Despite Picklum’s efforts, Simmers maintained control, extending her undefeated record against the Australian.

Wright and Simmers, who previously clashed in the 2023 Rio Pro Final, pushed each other hard. Simmers initially gained the upper hand, but Wright’s crucial Backdoor barrel after the halfway mark secured her victory.

By Kaea Latronic Short La Niña? This year, according to forecasters, there’s a to-thirds chance of a switch to neutral conditions in March-May. La Niña and El Niño make up the ENSO, or El Niño Southern Oscillation. La Niña carries with it cooler than average Pacific surface water temperatures. El Niño, on the other hand, carries warmer than average surface temperatures. Between the two phases, when the surface temperature of the Pacific is about average, it’s considered a neutral phase. Monitoring these phases gives us a months-ahead tip off, insight into the years’ coastal flooding, tornado seasons, and hurricanes, and more. Measurements and projections for 2025 say sea surface temperatures will stay in La Niña territory, but compared to the previous 70 years of collected data, the threshold is barely being met for qualifying La Niña conditions.

Surfrider Foundation LA chapter, SCCWRP (Southern California Coaster Water Research Project), Heal the Bay, and other institutions have collaborated to evaluate the aftereffects of the Eaton and Palisades fires on water quality along the coast. Checking for contamination in stormwater runoff, many of the same toxins found parallel testing results from the Lāhainā fire on Maui.

Heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, PFAs and other forever chemicals, as well as bacteria colonies. The objectives are to better understand how fires affect the rest of our ecology.

BUFFALO BIG BOARD SURFING CLASSIC Photos Brian Bielmann The Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic once again proved why it remains one of the most beloved traditions in the surf community. Over the course of two unforgettable weekends, Makaha Beach came alive with the spirit of camaraderie, competition, and celebration. Family, friends, and spectators gathered in droves, basking in the warm Hawaiian sun and witnessing the unique display of skill and sportsmanship that has defined this event for 48 years.

Honoring the legendary Richard ‘Buffalo’ Kalolo’okalani Keaulana, the event embraced the values he instilled in the surfing world—inclusivity, fun, and respect for the ocean. Surfers of all backgrounds and abilities took to the waves, competing in 14 different divisions, each emphasizing the core principle of enjoying the sport rather than the pressures of individual victories. The tradition of shared success lived on, much like Buffalo intended when he launched the first Classic back in 1977.

The waves provided the perfect canvas for competitors, from seasoned legends over 60 years old to up-andcoming surfers eager to leave their mark. The Two-Person Team SUP races were exhilarating, while the Solo Body Surfers carved effortlessly through the rolling swells. The Foreign Division Surfing brought together participants from around the world, reinforcing the event’s global appeal. The weight-based divisions, including the 250# & Over Surfers and Bully Boarders, delivered thrilling performances, showcasing the power and agility required to maneuver the oversized boards.

BUFFALO BIG BOARD

Tandem Surfing and Bullyboard Tandem divisions captivated the crowd with their synchronized maneuvers, demonstrating teamwork and balance at its finest. Meanwhile, the Alaia and Paipo riders paid homage to surfing’s roots, gliding across the water with traditional boards. One of the most anticipated events, the Supsquatch category, saw five-person teams paddling together in perfect harmony, creating some of the most entertaining moments of the competition. The Canoe Surfers rounded out the festivities, their four-man teams displaying impeccable coordination and skill.

D SURFING CLASSIC Beyond the competition, the event thrived on the energy of the community. Longtime friends reunited, newcomers were embraced into the fold, and the beach became a haven for storytelling, laughter, and cultural appreciation. Volunteers, whose tireless dedication made the event possible, were celebrated and acknowledged throughout the festivities.

As the final waves of the competition settled and the sun dipped below the horizon, it was clear that Buffalo’s vision had once again been fulfilled. The Classic wasn’t just about winning—it was about coming together, celebrating the ocean, and honoring the legacy of one of Hawaii’s greatest watermen. With Buffalo turning 90 this September, his mission of giving back to surfing remained stronger than ever.

Hawai’i, I was surprised to learn, is the top exporter of queen bees, shipped off to farmers nationwide. Here, queens are ready in January compared to mainland bee nurseries, or apiaries, which begin distributing queens in April.

Naturally, native bee populations are important for keeping native plants alive, which helps to protect the islands’ one-of-a-kind environment. The establishment of beeyards and apiaries keep native bees and honeybees from competing for flower-food resources. Local initiatives are crucial in creating this balance. One community member, Kekoa Colleado of Sacred Falls Honey based in Kaliuwa’a on the east side of ‘Oahu, will carefully rehome unwanted hives in residential areas and properties. In addition, he’s been encouraging local farmers to host hives, a symbiotic relationship benefitting farmer, crops and humans. The hive will help to pollinate crops, and in exchange, Koa diligently makes his rounds, collecting the honey and tending to the hives.

Already wondering how to take positive action? You can start by setting up “bee-friendly” spaces. Planting bright blue and red flowers, like bird of paradise and hibiscus, attract bees with their color, and of course nectar and pollen. Native plants and flowering shrubs like ilima and noni, naupaka and ohia lehua are not only great food sources for bees, planting them supports our native ecology. Avocado trees, passion fruits and citrus trees are great non-native options that also offer food for your family. However, make sure those flowers and fruiting trees aren’t sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals.

Makai McNamara suffered a brutal wipeout on an extralarge day at Pipeline, hitting his head on the reef and losing consciousness. Surfers and lifeguards quickly came to his rescue, reviving him on the sand before he was transported to the hospital for further treatment.
