A Fredonia Timeline The Fredonia Academy opens on October 4 with 15 students.

The academy enrolls 81 gentlemen and 55 ladies for the fall term.

Fredonia is incorporated as a village.

The college experiences rapid growth in programs, academic departments, faculty, and students.

Maytum Hall and Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center are constructed.

1975

Thompson Hall opens.

19761986

The college initiates programs in cooperative engineering, recombinant gene technology, and sound recording technology.

1983

Steele Hall is completed.

The academy closes, and the Fredonia Normal School opens.

1867

The Fredonia Normal School officially enrolls students in primary, junior, and academic departments.

1868

Music as a specialty area begins with the appointment of Miss Jessie Hillman to the Fredonia faculty.

1887

A tragic fire on December 14 kills six students and a janitor, destroying most of the building.

1900

1991

The Reed Library addition is completed.

The new building, Old Main (now One Temple Square senior citizen housing), is completed.

1903

1998

Enrollment exceeds 4,500 students.

2001

Lake Shore Savings Clock Tower and Carillon dedicated, and the Natatorium is completed.

2004

Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall dedicated.

2006

University Commons completed and opened.

2007

New state-of-the-art sound recording studio and control room are dedicated, and the new lighted soccer/lacrosse field complex is dedicated and opened as University Stadium.

Fredonia is authorized to award teacher certificates in music and art.

1909

A four-year course in music is first offered.

1931

The state purchases property on Central Avenue to be used for future expansion.

1933

A four-year program in elementary education is offered.

1938

Construction begins at the new campus.

1939

Mason Hall is completed.

1941

2008

The first baccalaureate in elementary education is awarded. Fredonia is now known as Fredonia State Teachers College.

1942

2009

Technology Incubator opens.

SUNY is created. Fredonia is now one of 11 colleges of education in the SUNY system.

1948

2011

Construction begins on new Science Center; Williams Center renovation initiated.

Gregory Hall, the first dormitory/ student union building, is occupied.

1951

2012

Williams Center and Maytum Hall renovations completed; construction continues on new Science Center.

Fenton Hall is completed.

1953

Alumni Hall becomes the second dormitory building on campus.

1958

McGinnies dormitory and the first Mason Hall addition are completed.

1961

I.M. Pei and Partners develops the master plan for a new campus.

1962

Dods, Nixon, Chautauqua, and Jewett halls are completed.

1963

Groundbreaking for Williams (Campus) Center.

1968

The Carnahan-Jackson Center for Scholarship and Learning is dedicated.

Groundbreaking is held for university’s Technology Incubator.

New Blue Devil Fitness Center opens.

2013

Construction continues on Science Center; construction begins on University Village Townhouses.

2014

Science Center and University Village Townhouses open; construction begins on addition to Rockefeller Arts Center.

2015

Fredonia earns the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

2016

Rockefeller Arts Center Studio Complex dedicated.

About Our Guest Speakers The Honorable Trini E. Ross became the United States Attorney for the Western District of New York on Oct. 11, 2021. Ms. Ross was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on July 26, 2021, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Sept. 30, 2021, becoming the first Black woman to hold the position in the Western District of New York. President Biden signed Ms. Ross’s commission on Oct. 5, 2021.

Ms. Ross is responsible for overseeing the prosecution of any federal criminal case brought within the 17 counties of Western New York. The office also represents the United States in all civil matters brought within this territory.

Ms. Ross, a native of Buffalo, received her J.D., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1992, her M.A. from Rutgers University in 1990, and her B.A. from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1988. She most recently served as the Director of Investigations, Legal Division, with the National Science Foundation’s Office of Inspector General since 2018. Ms. Ross has also been an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law since 2006.

From 1995 to 2018, Ms. Ross was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of New York, where she served as the Senior Litigation Counsel and the Chief of the Anti-Fraud and Corruption Section from 2012 to 2017. Ms. Ross also served as an Assistant Counsel with the Department of Justice’s Office of Professional Responsibility from 2007 to 2009. She was previously a civil litigation associate at Hiscock & Barclay, LLC from 1994 to 1995. Ms. Ross served as an Appellate Court Attorney for the New York State Supreme Court from 1992 to 1994. This spring, she was appointed to serve on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys (AGAC), as one of only 12 U.S. Attorneys appointed to the AGAC. The Honorable George M. Borrello was re-elected to the New York State Senate in November 2020, one year after winning a 2019 special election for the seat.

A successful businessman and entrepreneur, Senator Borrello founded Top-Shelf Marketing in his early 20s, growing it into a nationally recognized supplier to the hospitality industry. He merged it with another company where he spent 20 years in executive management.

His experiences as a small business owner have given him a firsthand perspective on the tax and regulatory hurdles that burden employers in New York State, and he authored legislation aimed at easing the burdens and providing incentives to innovate and expand. He has also emerged as one of the leading voices against unconstitutional executive mandates and special interests.

As the Ranking Member on the Senate’s Agriculture Committee, he has championed legislation to ease tax and regulatory burdens on New York’s farmers and led opposition to further reductions in the 60-hour overtime threshold for farm workers. Recognizing the positive impact of the pandemic program Nourish NY, he worked with colleagues across the aisle to make the farm-to-food bank initiative permanent. Other key priorities include: reducing the state’s high tax burden, reducing the cost of government through the imposition of a state spending cap, and workforce development initiatives.

Senator Borrello entered public service because he saw the region he loved struggling with many challenges. He served eight years as a Chautauqua County legislator pursuing projects to promote tourism, improve infrastructure, downsize government and clean up run-down properties. Seeking to have an even greater impact, he ran for Chautauqua County Executive in 2017. Among the achievements of his tenure were stronger partnerships with the business community, county budgets that reduced taxes and made record infrastructure investments, and an unprecedented agreement among Chautauqua Lake stakeholders that led to vast improvements in the lake’s usability.

Senator Borrello is a graduate of Fredonia High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.

Honors Graduates

Undergraduate students who have attained high scholastic achievement are eligible to graduate with honors, which are indicated to the right of the student’s major. Students graduating Cum Laude (C) have a final cumulative quality point average of 3.30 to 3.49; Magna Cum Laude (M), 3.50 through 3.69; and Summa Cum Laude (S), 3.70 or higher. For students graduating in May, August and December of this year, a preliminary determination was made considering the student’s most recent QPA. A final determination is made following the degree audit and is reflected on the student’s diploma. Through a gift from the Fredonia Alumni Association, Latin honors graduates wear a symbolic gold cord with their academic gown.

The Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment The Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment of the Fredonia College Foundation is presented at this year’s Commencement to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated balanced achievement. Criteria for selection include a high degree of personal honesty and integrity, substantial intellectual growth and achievement during university years, a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and exemplary service to Fredonia, including active participation in more than one area of university life.

Class of 2022 Senior Challenge Each year the graduating class, as its gift to Fredonia, conducts the Senior Challenge. Graduates donate a set amount representing their class year, this year it was $20.22. Funds were earmarked by the class for a scholarship.

Emergency Egress From Steele Hall Basketball/Track Arena The Emergency Exits are located on the lower level at both sides of the Platform in front of the arena. An additional exit is located at the back lower left, or southwest end, of the arena. Guests may also exit at the south end, walking down the lower corridor, past the ice arena, and out the south doors facing the Williams Center. Another exit is through the upper level doors from the balcony, turning left through the atrium adjacent to the swimming pool and exiting the building through the outer doors.

All persons sitting on the balcony should exit to the upper level hallway of Steele Hall, turn left, and continue through the atrium to the outer doors. Ushers will assist persons seated on the balcony in exiting the arena.

In the event of an emergency, please do not use the elevator.

Medical Services are located off the lower hallway of Steele Hall across from the entrance to the ice arena. Please contact an Usher or University Police officer if you need assistance.

Due to fire and safety requirements as directed by the fire marshal, there is no standing room for guests on the balcony of the fieldhouse. The limited seating on the balcony is reserved for Special Needs guests.

Commencement Traditions The Fredonia Commencement you are part of today incorporates traditions dating back to the earliest universities in the 12th century.

The Mace During the processional, note the mace carried by the mace bearer and the batons by the marshals.

The mace, by ancient tradition representing the power of office, symbolizes the authority of the President of the university. Dedicated to the late Mary H. Cranston, former faculty member and Dean of Women, and the late Anna B. Haskin, a lifelong friend of the university, the mace for Fredonia was presented by the Fredonia Alumni Association to the university in 1972. Assisting the alumni association with the creation of the mace was the late Helen (Clees) McKee, ’40, ’62.

Batons, dedicated to the late Robert W. Kasling, a science faculty member from 1946 to 1966, are carried by the Faculty Marshals to represent the direction and leadership of the faculty.

The Academic Costume Academic regalia derives directly from the caps, gowns, and hoods worn during the Middle Ages for protection against weather and unheated lecture halls. You can distinguish the three ranks (bachelor, master, doctor) by the styling. The bachelor's gown, which is designed to be worn closed, has pointed sleeves. The master's has an oblong sleeve with notched slits, through which the arms are passed.

The cap and mortarboard are worn with one corner facing forward. The tassel may also represent the academic subject by its color, although doctors may choose the option of metallic gold. A recent tradition has the undergraduate candidates wearing their tassels to the right, moving them to the left only after the degree has been conferred.
