Hunt takes on new role FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt has been appointed industry, innovation and science minister in the ministerial reshuffle announced last week by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Mr Hunt replaces Christopher Pyne who has been given the new role of Minister for Defence Industry. Josh Frydenberg replaces Mr Hunt, taking an expanded environment and energy portfolio. All three remain members of the Cabinet. As Environment Minister Mr Hunt was the target of many protests throughout Australia and particularly outside his Hastings office. Mr Hunt easily retained his seat of Flinders at the 2 July federal election despite a nearly four per cent swing against him. He now holds the seat with a 15.6 per cent majority on a two-candidate preferred basis against

Labor’s Carolyn Gleixner, down four per cent on the 2013 election. Mr Hunt received 51.62 per cent of first preference votes with a swing against him of 3.72 per cent, followed by Ms Gleixner with 27.08 per cent, who recorded a swing to labor of 1.88 per cent. They were followed by Willisa Hogarth of the Greens with 10.65 per cent of the vote, Ben Wild, Animal Justice Party, 4.28 per cent, Yvonne Gentle, Rise Up Australia Party, 3.33 per cent and independent Shane Lewis, 3.04 per cent. At the 2013 election, in a field of 10 candidates the ALP’s Joshua Sinclair recorded 25.2 per cent of votes and Mr Hunt 55 per cent. Keith Platt

WHAT’S NEW...

DETECTIVES searched a Frankston house, Thursday 14 July, and found a fully functioning clandestine drug laboratory – as well as a .22 rifle. Detective Sergeant Paul Busuttil, of the Frankston Crime Investigation Unit, said police found sufficient quantities of methyl amphetamines to make “substantial amounts” of the drug ice. Two men were arrested. A 60-year-old, of Frankston, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last week charged with possessing precursor chemicals, possessing materials to manufacture drugs, possessing and trafficking drugs and possessing an unregistered firearm. He was bailed to reappear at a committal mention on 4 November. The 40-year-old, of Avonsleigh, was bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court in September on charges of possessing and trafficking a drug of dependence. “It’s always good when we recover drugs and it’s a special bonus when we catch the people manufacturing drugs and also taking guns off the streets,” Sgt Busuttil said.

Teens make a run for it TWO 17-year-olds walking along Ballarto Rd, Carrum Downs, 9pm, Monday 11 July, ran for it when they were menaced by a man who demanded their mobile phones. The teenagers were passing the McCormicks Rd shops when the man – in a black Subaru with four others inside – jumped out and demanded the phone. They refused and sprinted off – with the man in hot pursuit – and escaped by jumping a fence. The offenders face potential attempted robbery charges. They are described as Polynesian. The main offender is late teens-early 20s, 183cm, solid build, wearing a grey hoodie with the word Stussy on the front. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Senior Constable Marty O’Brien, of

Frankston CIU, 9784 5555 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Robbed on way to work A FACTORY hand on his way to work in Carrum Downs was robbed of his boots, jacket and phone, 6.30am, Friday 15 July. The 27 year old, of Cranbourne, had just got off the bus at the intersection of FrankstonDandenong Rd and Lathams Rd when four men approached him near Levida Dr. One knocked the phone from his hand and it was picked it up by a co-offender. Another demanded his jacket – and threatened him with a stabbing if he did not comply – and another demanded his work boots. The offenders, who walked off towards Titan Dr, are described as African, late teens-early 20s, all 183cm, with one wearing a Chicago Bulls jacket and camel-coloured chino pants. “It was certainly a strange time and place for a pretty scary robbery,” Detective Senior Constable Marty O’Brien, of Frankston CIU, said. “It was dark and there were no witnesses. The man did not see his assailants until they were on to him.”

High cost of impound A BURNOUT has cost a Patterson Lakes man his Holden ute for a month after he was busted in Langwarrin last week. Somerville Highway Patrol members saw the thick blanket of tyre smoke on Centre Rd, 5pm, Saturday 16 July. The ute was clocked at 114kp/h in a 60kp/h zone. The 21-year-old was found to have a suspended probationary license, unregistered vehicle and bald rear tyres. His car was impounded at a cost of $1100. The man has been released pending summons. He is expected to be charged with conduct endangering life, manner dangerous, speeding, driving while suspended and driving an unregistered and unsafe vehicle.
