NO ONE’S UNSINKABLE To all those Unsinkable Guys out there – You might think it’s safe to have a few drinks around water, skip the lifejacket when you’re out on the boat or go for a swim without checking the conditions. But statistics prove that 4 out of 5 drownings are men. Just remember that no one’s unsinkable.

THE Louisa Dunkley Network will host a free event for International Women’s day this year. The network, established in 2021, aims to provide a forum for women to connect and work together on influencing local issues. It was set up by Dunkley MP Peta Murphy, and is now run by a steering committee. On 8 March, the network will host its International Women’s Day event. Ms Murphy will speak at the event, alongside Jodie Belyea from the Women’s Spirit Project, Aboriginal Women and Gurindji Community Member Deb Mellet, CEO of Peninsula Health Felicity Topp, and Frankston councillor Claire Harvey. The event will take place from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at RF Miles Reserve in Seaford, 8 March. Get free tickets at trybooking.com/ BXNRA

School slows emissions JOHN Paul College in Frankston is upgrading its lighting to reduce its C02 emissions. Principal John Visentin says that the upgrade is “step one in our vision for creating a more sustainable college for generations to come. Young people are passionate about preserving our planet’s resources and we have been inspired by that and want to play our part through action and education.” The school’s facilities and operation manager David Brennan said that stage one of the school’s sustainability plan “involved changing over 1200 fluorescent light fittings to LED fittings with self dimming sensors over the Christmas break. The upgrade is a small victory for college sustainability, maintaining the correct lux level of lighting for our learning spaces and student productivity, whilst also reducing our annual energy usage by 94 per cent and CO2 emissions by 379 tonnes.” “Stage two of the sustainability plan, planned for this year, will be centralising and automating all heating and cooling controls to prevent unnecessary power usage. Stage three is generating clean, renewable energy with the installation of solar panels.”

Fijian friendship A SISTER city agreement with Suva in Fiji is set to be officially signed this month. Frankston Council approved the establishment of the sister city relationship with Suva in September last year. In November council signed the memorandum of understanding. Cr Kris Bolam, who was mayor when the decision was made, has travelled to Fiji this week to formalise and sign the agreement. Ratepayer money is not being used to fund the trip. Honourable Premila Kumar, the Fijian minister for industry, trade, tourism, local government, housing and community development, is expected to meet with Cr Bolam to sign the document. Frankston also has sister city partnerships with Susono in Japan and Wuxi in China. After signing the memorandum of understanding last year, Cr Bolam said the relationship would provide “an opportunity for greater sharing, such as connections between schools that enable young people to learn more about each other and develop friendships that have value for generations to come.” (“Frankston forms friendship with Fiji” The Times 14/12/21) FORMER mayor Kris Bolam signing the MOU to make Suva in Fiji a sister city.
