‘Shut up’ for disease fundraiser A CHELSEA man living with motor neurone disease is calling on people to get involved with a fundraising effort this month. Jeff Brown was diagnosed with MND nearly two years ago. “Every day, it’s getting harder to speak. My normal ways of communicating are starting to falter. People I don’t see every day are having trouble understanding me,” he said. “MND may be taking my speech, but it will never take away my voice.” Brown has called for people to take part in the Shut Up! For MND Challenge this year. The MND Victoria initiative asks people to remain quiet

for up to 12 hours to raise money and awareness for MND. The challenge takes place on 22 September. “MND sucks, plain and simple - but I’m so grateful to have MND Victoria providing me with all the care and support I need to live each day to the fullest. That’s only possible because of initiatives like Shut Up! For MND,” Brown said. The inaugural Shut Up! TWO events to help encourage women to get involved with sports are being held this week. A free multisports day is being hosted by the Strong Sisters Australia Movement in Carrum Downs this weekend. Women and girls who attend will be able to play cricket, football, soccer, tennis, hockey, archery, and more. The day runs from 12pm to 5pm at Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve on 17 September. The Strong Sisters Movement started as a result of the ABC documentary Strong Women. Documentary co-creators Corinne Innes and Alexandra Gaulupeau said “the Strong Sisters Movement will help make a true impact on the welfare and positive health of Australian women, encouraging women to build their strength, improve their confidence, boost body positivity and open

meaningful conversations about mental health. These Come & Try events will be an exceptional opportunity for women to get in touch with their own strength and power through a variety of sports, and learn first-hand what their bodies are capable of.” VicHealth’s This Girl Can week is also this week. This Girl Can ambassador Miranda will help host an event at her roller derby club this week to help get more women and girls involved. Sk8house Carrum Downs at 2 Amayla Crescent will host a come and try event on 15 September, 7pm to 8pm.

living with MND still have a voice.” “To do that, they need access to the right information and support, as well as the right pieces of equipment to ensure that they can remain safe, independent, mobile and connected with their community,” she said. “That’s why MND Victoria’s services, including support coordination, support groups, education seminars and access to vital assistive equipment, are provided at no cost to the person with MND.” On average, two Australians are diagnosed with MND each day and two people die of it. More works at Mordialloc boat ramp done UPGRADE works at the Governor Road boat ramp car park are complete. A new asphalt surface has been laid at the Mordialloc site. Nine parks big enough to fit trailers have been added to the car park. Dredging has recently occurred around the boat ramp, and new concrete pontoons have been installed. Earlier this year the state government committed $60,000 to repair the boat ramp surfaces and pontoons, and install two hoists to improve accessibility. Fishing and boating minister Sonya Kilkenny said “Mordialloc is a favourite launching point for many boaters in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs so it’s great to see this upgrade complete – providing a huge benefit to all boaters, fishers, locals and visitors to the area.”
