September 2021

Happy September, Wavers! How time flies when you are having fun! It’s a thrill every time I see a Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise ship in our Port of Galveston. Welcome back! Cruising is a ton of fun, and the cruise industry is fantastic for our local economy. I just love to spread good news. Actually, this is great news. Shows at the wonderful Grand Opera House are returning! This is one of my favorite venues anywhere. How fortunate we are in Galveston to have a world-class facility like The Grand Opera House right here for all of us to enjoy. Get your tickets and support this awesome venue. They have some terrific shows coming. Jumping ahead a little bit, the Lone Star Rally will return this year. This event brings in people to our city from all over our country. You can count on Waves to be your source for news of all the exciting events and concerts that will be taking place. Stay tuned. The month of October will mark the four-year anniversary of Waves Magazine. Sometimes I must pinch myself to realize we have been doing what we do for four years. A special thank you to our loyal readers and advertisers. We couldn’t do it without you. I also want to thank our wonderful writers and contributors. They are the ones that work so hard each month to bring you the entertaining and informative articles that I know you all love. Thanks, everyone! I would be amiss if I didn’t say a special thank you

It will be a night to remember. As a reminder, Waves Magazine can be seen each month, page by page, on our award-winning website, www.wavesgalveston.com. Murine Typhus

Human Cases in Galveston

Z

oonosis is a term describing an illness that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Diseases like rabies, ringworm, and scabies are examples most of us are familiar with. In recent years a serious illness called murine typhus has been a diagnosis in more than a few Galveston residents. This disease is caused by a bacterium in the Rickettsia family and is transmitted to people through flea bites. Fortunately, the vast majority of fleas found on our household pets do not carry the infective bacteria. However, the fleas that have been living on rats or opossums may be carriers of typhus. Cats seem to play a role in the transmission of the condition if they have contact with these animals and pick up their fleas. The infected fleas likely

10 Waves Magazine | September 2021

jump from cat to human and transmit the infection. Flea feces that comes in contact with a break in the skin may also spread murine typhus. Just being around a cat will not cause the illness. The majority of cats will not become ill if exposed to this bacterium.

Photo Courtesy Of The New England Journal Of Medicine

People that are exposed to typhus usually get sick within two weeks of exposure. Some experience very mild symptoms like lethargy or fever and www.wavesgalveston.com

recover without treatment. Others develop high fever, chills, body aches, and coughing. A skin rash may show up around day five of the illness. It is important these people get to a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. Telling the doctor about contact you may have had with animals is crucial. A good history is always important to give to physicians and veterinarians to help make an accurate diagnosis. There are blood tests readily available for human typhus but unfortunately not for animals that may be carriers. People that receive an early diagnosis and are treated with the antibiotic doxycycline usually make an uneventful recovery. I personally have been told by four pet owners in the past that they had murine typhus.

There are a few steps pet owners can take to avoid being exposed to this disease. First and foremost is consistent flea control for your pets. Several excellent products are available at your veterinarian’s office that are safe and effective. Our pets live in our homes and often sleep in our beds. There are no good reasons to have bugs crawling on them. When treating an infestation don’t forget to treat the environment. Even though the fleas are not jumping on you, there may be significant numbers hiding in your yard and home. Fleas use animals for their meals but spend more time hiding in the environment until they get hungry again. You

may need advice from a pest control professional for the best products to use both inside and on your yard. Keeping our yards mowed and cleared of overgrowth will provide less habitat for flea-infested creatures to hide. When using rodenticide baits, be sure they are out of reach of your pets and children. Avoid leaving pet foods outdoors that will attract rodents, feral cats, and opossums. Intentionally feeding these animals will attract them to your yard bringing their diseases and parasites with them. It is kind not wanting to see animals starve, but is it worth the risk to you and your pets? Several cases of typhus diagnosed at UTMB occurred in people who routinely visited sites in town to feed colonies of

feral cats. It was thought that the cats picked up infected fleas from rodent exposure and passed them to well-intentioned persons. Good preventative parasite control is very important to keep our pets healthy and reduce the chances that an illness can be passed on to you or a family member. If you have more questions about murine typhus or other zoonotic illness, contact the Texas Department of Health, Zoonosis Control Division.

The Further Decline Of Customer Service

t’s a pretty sad state of affairs that in this day and time, quality customer service is almost non-existent. You have almost an equal chance of spotting Big Foot as you do finding caring customer service. We have to ask ourselves, how did we, the consumer, ever allow this to happen to us?

There are still people walking our planet today that can remember when terrific customer service was actually commonplace. When businesses had the mindset that they should take good care of their customers. When they appreciated us and wanted to keep our business with their company. Sadly, that type of corporate attitude has died and gone away.

is how you do it.” Our reply was as follows: “We are very sorry we had trouble scanning this, we had virtually no training before you made us a cashier.” This statement was not met with a warm, fuzzy smile. Don’t even get us started on the horrible state of telephone customer service. Something that seems to be designed to keep us from actually ever speaking with anyone. The writing space in this article does not allow us to get into that now, but we will be soon.

Some folks can even remember that many years ago, when it was time to fill up our family vehicle with gas, we drove into the gas service station and the following actually happened: a real-live, breathing attendant came to our vehicle, greeted us warmly, and asked us what grade of gasoline we wanted. Then while our tank was being filled, the unheard of happened... The attendant checked our vehicles tire pressure and cleaned our windshield.

Do we like it when businesses care nothing about providing us, their customers, with quality customer service?

Yes, there was a time when that actually took place.

When we do find a company or service that truly cares about our business, let’s be sure and support them regularly. Fortunately, Galveston does have a lot of locally owned businesses that do care about us. Support them!

To give an example of how bad customer service is currently, we recently shopped at a big box store home improvement center. We went to buy 3 items. While searching the store looking for our items, it was near impossible to find anyone that actually cared about showing us where anything was.

NO! WE DON’T LIKE THAT!

The topper came at check-out time. There were ZERO cashiers. That’s right, ZERO. Every open lane was self-checkout. When we had trouble scanning a hose clamp, the only attendant there came over and gruffly grabbed the scan gun and said, “this Have a Pet Peeve ? A TRADITIONAL SEASIDE VILLAGE THAT’S TRANSFORMING THE TEXAS COAST High architectural standards and a strong design code signal a new level of quality on the Texas Coast. The expansion, Cinnamon Shore South, gives buyers the opportunity to join the prettiest, beachside village in the Lone Star State.

Mark Schnell Urban Designer

When I first ventured to Mustang Island, located on the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas, I found a place that’s straight out of a Robert Earl Keen song. The iconic Texas musician sings that “the road goes on forever, and the party never ends.” But Mustang Island offered a twist on his lyrics: the road literally ends at the ship channel (and a ferry) in the old town area of Port Aransas. Even though the road does not go on forever, the party in Port Aransas never ends: lively beach bars, a robust restaurant scene, some of the best fishing around, and a funky beach town

REAL ESTATE &

vibe that comes in part from a location at the very end of the road. But I didn’t find the kind of walkable mixed-use communities that so many people – including many Texans – have come to love along Florida’s Highway 30A, a place that I call home. I met Jeff Lamkin in 2006 after he had purchased 60 acres on Mustang Island. He loved Port Aransas, but also saw potential in the wide open spaces just outside of old town to create a new community for beach-loving Texans. I designed the master plan and wrote the design code to generate a

walkable mixed-use community unlike anything constructed on the Texas coast. With a strong emphasis on design, we set out to create a new place to complement the old. In the 15 years that followed, the original 60-acre tract has been largely builtout. Hundreds of additional acres were purchased, and new phases are now under construction, with even more in the planning stages. Cinnamon Shore has grown to become the community that transformed the Texas coast.

Rejuvenating the Earlobes

D

o you have a special pair of earrings, maybe even a pair of diamond studs, that no longer sit well in your pierced earlobe? There is now a simple outpatient procedure you can do to fix that.

Do Earlobes Age? Interestingly, just like the face, earlobes lose volume as we get older. The combination of sun damage, wrinkles, loss of collagen and elastic tissue changes the shape of the earlobe, causing the piercing to hang lower. Additionally, years of wearing heavy earrings, age, gravity and genetics can contribute to the development of saggy earlobes. Can Stretched Earlobes Be Fixed? Yes! The same hyaluronic acid fillers that are used to restore volume to the face can be used to restore structure, shape and volume to the earlobe. This includes the Allergan line of fillers including Juvéderm®️ Ultra, Juvéderm®️ Ultra Plus, or Vollure™️.

Before

After

Is Filler in the Earlobe a Long Procedure? Often referred to as a “lunch time procedure”, filler in the earlobe takes only a few minutes to complete. A single syringe is typically more than enough to fill both earlobes. The use of a topical anesthetic cream can make the brief procedure pain free.

Before

After

Most clients return to their daily activities immediately. There can be some mild swelling and bruising that can last a few days, but when that goes down, you can expect lobes that look and feel great. And now, your earrings will actually sit upright in their piercing! How Can I Effectively Maintain the Results from my Earlobe Filler? In order to get the best and longest results from your earlobe filler (which you can expect to last from 12-18 months depending on the filler used), follow these simple suggestions: 1. Avoid the frequent use of heavy earrings as they drag on the piercing and elongate the hole. 2. Earring support discs that adhere to the post can help support the earring or earrings relieving some of the pull. 3. Take your earrings out before you go to bed, and before you hold the phone receiver up to your ear. Better yet, use ear buds or the speaker phone! Let’s avoid extreme earlobe damage that could require surgical repair. A little filler to the earlobe can help restore volume. Following the three suggestions above can help you maintain the improvement. Get those pretty stud earrings out of the jewelry box and have fun wearing them, once again! Have a great day, and I hope you continue to

Each year, The Grand picks a title for the Performing Arts Season that is drawn in some way from the various performances. It certainly is appropriate to name this 2021–2022 Season “Get Ready!” — a familiar song title of the hit sung by The Temptations. Rescheduled from our 125th Anniversary season, these multi-award-winning superstars of soul are scheduled to perform at The Grand in December. As for all of us at The Grand, we started getting ready to open a new season after well over a year of closure and hope you are ready to join us. We certainly are ready to have you back with us. There are plenty of reasons to join in the celebration of re-opening with award-winning talent: Asleep at the Wheel’s 50th Anniversary Tour, Mavis Staples’ Grand debut, Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Band, Chazz Palminteri, Johnny Mathis, The Texas Tenors and so much more. There’s something for everyone!

Like everyone in our industry, we are watching the latest news with much concern. Despite our positive outlook, we are seeing an alarming trend that we didn’t expect and we, as well as our colleagues across the country are revisiting in-house protocols. Out of an abundance of caution, The Grand has adopted the following, which will be modified as the days, weeks and months go by. At this time, The Grand’s protocol includes wearing masks when attending a performance. As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor the situation and be prepared to modify our approach as conditions warrant. At all times, our decisions will be based on the latest available data and expertise from the Center for Disease Control, Texas Department of Health and our own health and medical experts.

All of us look forward to welcoming you back to your Grand. Stay safe; be well.

The Grand invites you to check its website at

ESTAURANT EVIEW Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences.

T

he 2400 block of the Strand in Galveston has developed into a food and entertainment destination where visitors and residents gather for food, fun, and libations. Several venues offer live entertainment, casual food, and even fine dining all concentrated into a couple of blocks of historic buildings. One of the most popular is the Shark Shack Beach Bar & Grill.

Situated on the corner of 24th and Strand in an historic circa 1890 building, they have been offering value packed lunches, happy hour drinks, and delicious dinners to throngs of satisfied customers. Formerly the Mediterranean Grill, the building underwent extensive remodeling while carefully retaining its historic architectural details. It has emerged as a much brighter and more inviting space for enjoying a leisurely lunch or a sporting event during their renowned happy hour. Careful attention was given to maximizing outdoor seating areas for those pleasant days and evenings when the Galveston summer heat subsides. A huge mural commands the entire Western wall facing 24th street and lends an inviting, relaxing ambience. The mural, by renowned local artist Gabriel Prusmack, is one of several that brighten our urban environment. You may see the locations of his other works by visiting his website: www.gabrielprusmack.com

As you enter the building you will notice the long bar commanding most of the right side of the restaurant. Flanked by numerous widescreen televisions, it is reminiscent of a sports bar and serves that purpose very well while also functioning as a great place for a solo diner or to gather friends for happy hour drinks and snacks. Several comfortable booths line the left wall offering a more intimate dining space for an evening date or relaxing lunch or dinner. Conventional tables are grouped towards the back of the restaurant. A roped-off area outside defines the sidewalk seating on both the Strand frontage and against the mural on 24th street. As inviting as the space may be, the real attraction here is the food. They have an extensive menu which perhaps is best explained in their own words. “ Here at Shark Shack Beach Bar & Grill in Galveston, our menu is specially catered to fit the sensibilities of even the most haughty of tastebuds, and our atmosphere - to loosen the stiffest of dispositions. Come for the food - stay for the party” What does it all mean? My translation is they have an extensive menu that offers a broad variety of food while carefully staying within the parameters of their very capable kitchen. Everything I have sampled here has been excellent. Their uniformly high ratings on social media attest to their quality and value. They have an aggressive weekday lunch menu that offers large portions for bargain prices. The lunch menu offers a sampling of the range of their kitchen from a hot dog -The big Kahuna is not your average dog - to more sophisticated seafood dishes and refreshing salads. The all-day menu features a broad array of appetizers including their acclaimed “shark bites” of cheese stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon, fried and brushed with BBQ. The Cajun Shrimp Fondue is not to be missed and is perhaps the most widely recommended of their many starters.

Shark Shack Beach Bar & Grill Personally, I am fond of their rendition of fish & chips. Flaky beer battered cod perfectly cooked and paired with their house made chips. A huge and hearty meal. For a lighter lunch, I’ll often have their BLT sandwich overstuffed with thick cut delicious bacon, ripe tomatoes and lettuce on toasted bread. The burgers and other sandwiches are uniformly huge and delicious, but the real star for many is their seafood. The kitchen has a flair for Cajun and Creole. From a very good jambalaya to a respectable blackened redfish or deep rich gumbo, the Louisiana influence is obvious. A southwest presence appears in their seafood tacos and some poblano inspired dishes. Even their more mundane fried seafood platters are expertly executed, and people rave about their crab cakes and hush puppies. An especially good wedge salad and a seafood cobb is an overthe-top experience for lighter eaters. Their weekday happy hour runs from 2 to 6 Tuesday through Friday and offers drink and food specials along with their crafted cocktails. The restaurant is handicap accessible, but sidewalks and parking in the Strand area can present problems for mobility impaired customers.

hange is a constant in life and the restaurant business is no exception. Sadly, this month we have several closures to report. Given the turmoil brought on by the pandemic, we have been fortunate to retain the vast majority of our local restaurants.

Closings Soul to Soul Ouida Cook’s much-loved destination for hearty soul food and southern cooking is closed. Hope remains, however, as she is hosting a steak night each Sunday evening at the 23rd Street Piano Bar in a strip center at 23rd and O street. I haven’t been, but reports are it is a very good ribeye with baked potato and sides for $20. Also, she is reportedly operating out of a food truck located at Lucky Lounge at 8305 Stewart Road - hours and times uncertain. We at Waves wish her every success and miss her fried ribs and Daddy Secret Sauce. Le Petite Bakery and Deli Perhaps a victim of its location, this bakery and deli at 21st and Church never seemed to have many customers or inventory. The few reports that appeared on social media were all favorable. I lament that I did not personally sample their food. Goodbye and we wish them future success. The Patio Grill This family operated casual dining spot offered a large deck and good food in an underserved area on Broadway at 53rd Street. We will miss their homemade burgers and exceptional crinkle fries. Cavoli & Mila Food Truck Most recently located at 25th Street and Post office, this Caribbean themed food truck offered Cuban style sandwiches, empanadas, mofongo, and other treats that are rarely seen here. Reports are they headed back to the Northeastern USA. Nevertheless, they are missed and made quite a splash in their short island tenure.

Openings

Located at 216 23rd Street in the former location of Shrimp and Stuff, this recently opened restaurant is getting rave reviews. I plan to stop by very soon. I hope to see you there. See their menu and operating hours at www.thegardenthaicuisine.com Texas Tail Distillery Adjacent to a newly opened food truck court at the corner of 25th street and Postoffice, this full-service bar offers crafted drinks from their very own distilled spirits. A huge patio and very dog friendly festive atmosphere pairs well with their food offerings. While perhaps not technically a restaurant, they have a unique product worth a visit.

Other News Huli Huli Hut This favorite party place and fine food restaurant may soon be expanding their hours and offering breakfast. We can always use another fine breakfast choice. Stay tuned. La Cocina Celebrity chef Mary Bass continues to offer prepared meals for bargain prices out of her events space at 1508 39th Street. Stop by and choose from an array of appetizer entrees and desserts. The choices vary so check her website for availability at www.chefmarybass.com. Michael Burger Watch for a new upscale eatery to go into the old Michael Burger location just off the western end of the seawall. Remodeling is underway. VFW Post 880 Located at 1014 24th Street offers hand cut ribeye steaks cooked to order every Friday beginning at 5:30PM. These thick cut 1lb steaks are cooked to order and served with a loaded baked potato, salad, and dessert for $16.50. A full-service bar and smoke free environment make for an economical and delicious evening out. Open to the public, this all-volunteer event supports the important services the lodge provides to our veterans.

We are very pleased to announce the openings of some new restaurants including our island’s very first serving food from Thailand. The Garden Thai Cuisine

Harvesting and Drying Fresh Herbs

hen I first began my journey with herbs, I thought there must be some very complicated and involved process to get the plants from the garden to a jar like you see in the store.

stems causes the plant to become bushy and full. Herbs can be used fresh or dried, depending on what your purpose is at that time. Some herbs, like Basil, only grow in the summer and produce a lot. So, these herbs are good for drying in the growing season so that you have a good supply all year round. If you are going to dry your herbs by hanging, bundle the herbs and secure the stems with a rubber band. Hang these bundles stem side up in a cool place out of direct sunlight. To dry in a dehydrator- place herbs in trays and follow the directions for that particular machine.

I was so wrong. Harvesting, drying, and using herbs is one of the simplest things you will ever do. This time of year, your plants may not be growing much due to the high heat, but once the cool weather begins to arrive, there will be a flush of new growth. Take advantage of this new growth and dry you some fresh herbs!

The best time of day for harvesting is mid-morning. After the dew has dried and before it has gotten very hot, the essential oils will be at the highest content in the leaves making for the most flavorful and powerful herbs.

Harvest herbs by cutting the desired amount- DO cut the stems and do not just pick the leaves. Cutting the

When you harvest and dry your own herbs, you will notice how much more flavorful and fresher the herbs and seasonings you blend are. Once you start, you will not ever want to use storebought herbs again.

G e t t i n g t o The Core of Your Core

o understand how vital strong core muscles are, it helps to know exactly what makes up your core. Many people think “core” is synonymous with “abs,” but that’s not true. Your core does include your abdominal muscles, but it also consists of the many muscles that move your hips and your back. In fact, “the core” consists of 29 muscles in the abdomen, pelvic floor, sides of the trunk, back, buttocks, hip, and pelvis. Core muscles stabilize the spine and help transfer forces between the upper and lower body. Think of it like the tree trunk of your body (albeit a lot more mobile): It has to hold its ground so that your branches (arms and legs) can do their “thing” any which way. Lack of core muscle fitness can create an unstable spine and stress muscles and joints. A weak core is often the cause of back pain, which plagues over 85% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. In fact, low-back pain is the second most common ailment in the United States. And, not to throw another curveball, but visible abs do not always equate to a strong core. Having visible abs just means your body fat percentage is low enough to show the muscle fibers beneath subcutaneous fat. You can 100% have excellent core strength without having visible abs.

Now, Onto Why Core Strength Is So Important. 48 Waves Magazine | September 2021

A Strong Core Prevents Pain And Injuries Picture your core as a sturdy, stable cylinder around your spine and vital organs. With a strong core, you’d be able to activate and engage that cylinder any time your spine and organs faced danger. Study after study after study has shown that core strength training can reduce back pain. A Strong Core Improves Performance Your core is partially responsible for every type of movement, except at the extremities. Your core muscles allow you to bend, twist, flex, extend, step, jump, sit up and simply stand with good posture-- the stronger your core, the better you can perform all of these movements. A Strong Core Increases Longevity Do you want to take care of yourself when you’re older? If yes, focus on building a strong core now. Even if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, it’s not too late to add core workouts to your routine and develop core strength. A strong core is often the difference between an older adult who can run their own errands, put away their own groceries and play with their grandkids for hours, and an older adult who requires help on all of those fronts. A strong core represents the difference between truly living and simply surviving in old age. Research shows that core stability training can improve balance in older adults and reduce the risk of falling (falls are the leading cause of injuries among www.wavesgalveston.com

older adults). One study found that just 20 minutes of core training three times per week can significantly increase older adults’ ability to complete routine daily tasks such as household chores. A Strong Core Improves Quality Of Life This last benefit of strong core muscles is really a culmination of the above three, but it’s worth recognizing on its own. As anyone might imagine, decreased pain, fewer injuries, improved performance, and boosted longevity definitely come together for a healthier, happier life.

So, How Do You Get A Strong Core? There are three basic core building movements with which you can begin your core strengthening. Five sets in total of these three exercises three times a week will have you sporting a healthy, strong core in no time! If you have back or knee pain or have recently had a baby, consult your doctor before getting started. Plank - This is the definitive core exercise. The plank involves minimal movement but maximal effort, requiring you to support your body on your forearms and toes while holding your body in a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles. You can make it easier by resting on your knees or, more challenging, by extending your arms, so you’re supported by your hands. Hold the plank for 30 seconds for each set.

Dead bug - Lie on your back with your arms extended straight up towards the ceiling and your legs raised with your knees bent at 90°. Lower your right arm and left leg at the same time until they are hovering just above the floor, then return to the starting position. Then do the same with the opposite limbs—10 repetitions of each side.

shape. You can also raise your arms and spread your legs to make the hold more challenging. Hold for 30 seconds for each set.

Hello Waves readers! More and more of our readers tell me they can’t believe it’s already September. This month’s fun facts start with exactly that, September. What is the strongest hurricane to hit Galveston? The Galveston hurricane September 8, 1900, remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Fun Fact: The Category 2 hurricane made landfall on July 27, 1943, on the Bolivar Peninsula. The U.S. was in the middle of World War II. In Texas, the biggest threat from Nazi Germany was submarines, called U-boats, in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of the threats from U-boats, ships were not allowed to broadcast on their radios. This included weather reports that the National Weather Service relied on for storm forecasting. Another Fun Fact: This hurricane was the first storm to have an aircraft fly into the center. Has Galveston ever had a tsunami? “There is a risk of tsunamis in the Gulf of Mexico, but it is low,” said University of Houston Geology professor Paul Mann. Fun Fact: Mann says an underwater landslide caused the last big tsunami here some 7000 years ago.

Who is the richest person in Galveston? Tilman Fertitta. He was placed at No. 153 on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans; Forbes calls him the “World’s Richest Restaurateur”. Fun Fact: Jimmy Buffett expressed an interest in building one of his Margaritaville cafes in Galveston, either along the Strand or on the Seawall. But the Moodys insisted on leasing only, with control and final approval power on how the property would be handled, from menus to hours. How many babies are born in Galveston each year? 5,500! A UTMB unit specializes in the care of pregnant women during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum stages of their pregnancy. They deliver approximately 5,500 babies per year. How many weddings take place in Galveston each year? The total number of weddings in 2020 was 1,162. Fun Fact: Galveston County ranks 221 out of 3109 counties in number of weddings. How much do couples spend on a wedding in Galveston TX? The average wedding cost in 2020 was $25,795.

www.wavesgalveston.com

Fun Fact: Galveston County ranks 294 out of 3109 Counties in average wedding cost. Has anyone from Galveston ever won the lottery? Yes! $3,729,366.52. Fun Fact: The ticket was sold at Seven Seas Grocery. How many people get bitten by a shark in Galveston each year? Since 1865, there have been 66 shark attacks in Texas waters. Fun Fact: The most recent of those attacks took place on Aug. 9, 2018. I hope everyone enjoyed this month’s fun facts! Remember, if you want to have your fun fact researched, please send your question to PO Box 612, New Caney, TX 77357. See ya next month!

C U R TA I N G O I N G U P ETC REVEALS 19TH SEASON “HEY NINETEEN” - SLATES O P E N I N G N I G H T G A L A F O R S PA M A L O T By: Paul Hager ETC’s artistic director Kim Mytelka recently announced the theater’s 19th season and plans for an opening night gala for their first production SPAMALOT. We featured a synopsis and background of SPAMALOT in last month’s column, but how about this for some added excitement?

Jan. 21 – Feb. 12, 2022 By John Patrick Shanley (Sunday matinee January 30)

“What do you do when you’re unsure?” This is the question explored in the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award (Best Play) winning play. When an unthinkable accusation is leveled against Father Flynn, Sister Aloysius determines that the only way to get justice is to create it herself. DOUBT: A Parable raises questions of uncertainties, but also allows the audience to explore who they are, and who they become, in the face of adversity. *Due to subject matter, ETC recommends this production for ages 14 and up)

(Sunday matinee November 14)

Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak to audiences across generations and all over the world. RENT, a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning masterpiece, is a reimagining of Puccini’s La Boehme. The musical follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. This timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters – love.

*ETC does not recommend this production for younger and easily offended audiences due to language and subject matter.

(Sunday matinees May 15 and 22)

Four high school seniors, over a generous supply of alcohol, vow to be bridesmaids in each other’s weddings…no matter what. Of course, they were thinking of only one wedding each. Thirty years later, these BFFs are still making ‘the walk’ because a promise is a promise. Don’t miss this laugh-out-loud journey with these beleaguered bridesmaids as they navigate the choppy waters of love and marriage. *ETC recommends this production for all ages

I was certainly hoping [as I’m sure all you readers were as well] that we would be FAR beyond discussing COVID protocols for attending live theatre by now, but unfortunately, we are not.

The remainder of the diversly entertaining season is as follows:

Nov. 12 – Dec. 9, 2021 Music, lyrics & Book by Jonathan Larson

May 13 – May 28, 2022 By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten

March 11 – April 9, 2022 Music & Lyrics by David Yazbek Book by Terrance McNally (Sunday matinees March 20 & 27)

THE FULL MONTY follows six down-on-their luck steelworkers who are desperately seeking employment and a paycheck to support their families. They come up with the idea of making a quick buck by launching a striptease act. As the guys work their way through their fears and anxieties while gathering the courage to go ‘Full Monty,” they discover their strength as a group and within themselves. THE FULL MONTY is the Americanized musical stage version of the 1997 British film and is a fun and crazy look at how far we will go to make things right.

*Due to language and ‘possible’ nudity, ETC does not recommend this production for young or easily offended audiences.

When I asked Kim if ETC would continue their current policy/protocol, she reiterated it which is: “Due to Covid 19, we are taking extra precautions and returning to limited and social distanced seating for SPAMALOT. After you purchase your reservation, we will email your tickets to you with the assigned seats. Should you have and special seating requests, please include them in the ‘notes’ section of the reservation and/or email.” Bottom line – tickets for both SPAMALOT and the opening night gala must be purchased in advance by visiting

https://www.islandetc.org where you will also find information on season tickets. Ticket purchase and seating protocols for future productions will be updated closer to the show dates. Kudos, Kim for another fantastic season line-up!

Bum

Ten Lip-Syncing Catastrophes Happy September, Wavers! Thanks for the feedback on the “Troubled Restaurant Chains” article last month. Some of you said you visited a few that was on the list to give them some business. Admirable, and I’m positive they appreciate your business. Your Bum loves live music, from the excellent local scene to the big boy productions of the superstars. I have always appreciated the extraordinary amount of planning, technical challenges, choreography, costume designs, advertising, and years of sacrifices most artists endure to polish their craft and give a killer performance for the fans. I was running around in my ol’ scarab the other day when an old school Milli Vanilli tune came on the radio. While quickly reaching over to change the station :), I recalled the lip-syncing scandal surrounding these guys in the late ’80s, early ‘90s, and I had a thought. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking. I wondered how many other artists fell victim to lip-syncing allegations over the years. I understand some may lip-sync due to illness, voice fatigue, rigorous dance routines during a tune, and colder temperatures affecting the vocal cords. What I don’t understand is trying to hide the obvious from folks that pay a shiny penny to see their favorite artist live. Personally, I would rather have a shaky live performance than a perfect pre-recorded one. Since lip-syncing still carries such a stigma in the music industry, many singers keep their lip-syncing secret…. until they slip up that is. Here are a few of the slip-ups that I found.

Milli Vanilli - 1989 Rob & Fab, AKA Milli Vanilli, international dance pop powerhouses, had huge success in the late 80’s, early 90’s, even winning a Grammy Award for Best New Artist on in 1990. Caught lip-syncing at a Club MTV live performance resulting in them running off the stage mid-gig, the duo was forced to return the Grammy and was hit with numerous lawsuit claims. Their producer, Frank Farian, eventually confirmed the scandal and the backlash was unprecedented.

Britney Spears - 2014 Britney was busted during her Las Vegas residency when she attempted to perform a new version of her song “Perfume.” When it came time for Britney to sing, the crowd didn’t hear Britney, but rather Sia, the Australian Singer/ Songwriter that penned the song. Sia recorded a demo version of the song, and that’s what was played during the show. OOPS! Britney did it again!

54 Waves Magazine | September 2021

Rascal Flatts - 2014 During a performance at the ACM Fan Jam, fans noticed that their performance of “Rewind” sounded exactly like it did on the album. The band admitted they were lip-syncing to a recording of the song at the April 6, 2014 show. In response to the controversy, Rascal Flatts said that lead singer Gary LeVox had lost his voice and so a last-minute decision was made to lipsync. Considering the vocal range of these guys, I can see how vocal fatigue can be a problem.

www.wavesgalveston.com

Beyonce - 2013 At Obamas first inauguration in 2009, Aretha Franklin left some pretty big shoes to fill with her live rendition of “My Country Tis of Thee”. Fast-forward to Obamas second inauguration in 2013, when Beyonce performed the National Anthem while millions of people noticed she was lip-syncing. After the Inauguration, Beyoncé admitted to lip-syncing, stating she’s an extreme perfectionist and didn’t have the time to rehearse, so she opted to not sing at all. Not exactly the gig to relax on, Beyonce!

Katy Perry - 2013 At the NRJ music awards in Cannes, a track started playing before Katy hit the stage. Katy held up the microphone and her lips were moving, but the wrong words were playing. By the time Katy Perry started singing live, the damage was already done. Claiming “technical” issues, whether Katy missed her cue, or the show producers screwed up, this is a particularly cringeworthy moment in lip-sync history.

Ashlee Simpson - 2004 Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-syncing on “Saturday Night Live” when she attempted to perform her second song of the night, “Autobiography”, and “Pieces of Me” ended up playing instead. Looking confused, she did a few awkward dance moves before quickly exiting the stage with the song still playing. Simpson took full blame for the lip-syncing flub, but released a couple of different stories as to why it happened. At first, she tried to say that the producers simply played the wrong track, that it should have been pre-recorded percussion tracks for the band. Then she backtracked again, saying that her voice was in bad shape from her rigorous tour schedule.

Lady Gaga Lady Gaga was accused of lip-syncing on Australia’s morning show “Sunrise” back in 2008, prompting music bloggers to attack her. According to the singer, she was singing over her song because she was dancing. After that debacle, she vowed she will never lip sync again. Fast Forward to a comment a few years later: “I don’t think it’s cool to lip sync. I’m not judging if people do because it’s everybody’s own style of what they decided the type of artist they will be. I think if you pay money for a ticket to see a show that the artist should have some pipes and sing their records for you.” A bit of an off comment considering her 2008 catastrophe.

Cher - 2013 In 2013, Cher went on The Ellen DeGeneres show with her mother to promote her mother’s new album, and it was clear they were both lip-syncing. Cher lashed back at critics by explaining that her mom was battling pneumonia and was exhausted, and that they were lucky she could perform at all.

Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan was suspected of lip syncing during a live performance on “Good Morning America” back in 2004. Several tabloids and gossip Web sites claimed that Lohan’s mouth was not moving, but words were still being heard when she was supposed to be singing “Rumors” and “Over,” two tunes from her new album. Lohan’s label later admitted that she was using background tracks on one of her tunes during her performance.

Mariah Carey - 2013 & 2016 Regarded as one of the world’s top vocal performers, Mariah was accused of lip-syncing at the BET Awards in 2013. While singing her single “Beautiful”, her microphone, voice, and mouth looked and sounded completely out of sync. Carey was a victim of lip syncing again on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest in 2016. Visibly flustered early in the performance due to not being able to hear her monitor, things got worse as they moved from song to song while she tried to hold her own on stage. She ended up walking off in the middle of her performance. Carey didn’t directly apologize for the lip-syncing, but did admit that she was mortified about getting caught in the act.

Close-up on: PATRICK LEMIRE SCOTCH-BRIGHT MAGIC

S

cotch-Brite© Magic - It’s not really about a magic pad, but the results of using one to create a crosshatch pattern on monofilament’s surface is sort of magical. I came up with this mono crosshatch idea about twelve years ago and have been using it ever since. My idea was generated after I saw an underwater photo of a hooked ling on a mono leader, taken a foot or so below the surface — the mono leader was shining in the reflected, magnified sunlight as if it were chrome. While that was extreme, it did bring out the apparent fact that, even though a mono leader might be clear, its smooth surface greatly contributed to it being a sunlight reflector. The most common viewing of this “chrome mono” look is when the sunlight is coming from above to almost directly behind a mono strand and into the water. The next time you are on a pier, beach or in a boat, look for this extreme reflected sunlight — “chrome mono.” Diffusing the reflected shine of your mono line/leader may turn a wary adult of just about any species from a “looker” into an “eater”, especially when fishing for any near surface species. This also applies to inshore and bay fishing. Think about how many times this has probably happened in the past. Killing the reflection on a mono main line for about 5-6 feet above a wire leader helps too, especially when a short leader of around twelve inches is used. The idea of a crosshatch pattern on the mono’s surface greatly reducing the reflection was a good one; how to get it there was the next problem. Somewhere in the thought process of solving the reflection problem, I came up with using fine grit wet/ dry sandpaper. This sort of worked, but still was not what I was looking for. When looking at a scouring pad the “light bulb came on.” After trying several brands and types of pads, I settled on the dark green ones by 3-MTM, named Scotchbrite©. They had the

58 Waves Magazine | September 2021

flexibility, softness and texture that gave the best and most consistent crosshatch pattern on a mono strand’s surface. The last time I bought any of these Scotch-brite© pads was at Sam’s, a “Value Pack” of 18. When each pad was cut into four equal pieces, this gave me a total of 72, measuring about 4-1/2” x 3” x 1/4”. The mono surface crosshatching process goes like this: Hold one end of the mono section to be modified in your left hand; with the folded Scotchbrite© pad with the mono held snugly in it in your right hand, that’s up against your left hand. Now, with a back and forth wrist rolling motion of about one second each, pull the mono slowly thru the Scotch-brite© pad at about 6” per second with your right hand. See the illustration. When you get to the distance along the mono to be crosshatched, stop and reverse the process until you reach the original starting point. One time up, one time down the mono and you have put a crosshatch pattern on the mono surface. Breaking up the mono’s reflective surface must be done with a crosshatch pattern, just pulling a mono strand straight through a Scotch-brite© pad will only put those minute scratches in a straight line, the reflected shine will still be a problem, in fact, intensified. The random crosshatch pattern definitely diffuses the reflected light. To see the effect of this crosshatching, using great care, fill a clear glass container with clear water, put it in a position so that direct sunlight is coming through from the side away from you. Put a loop of crosshatched mono and a loop from the same spool without the treatment into the jar’s water. The mono loop with the crosshatch pattern will almost disappear, versus the unaltered piece. You will have no question as to the effectiveness of the crosshatching. The benefit of this crosshatching is that it’s headed in the direction of having stealth performance as

www.wavesgalveston.com

fifteen feet of 80# mono leader knotted on. I only do the Scotch-brite© treatment to the outer 5-6 feet and cut the leader back as needed as the fishing goes on. I haven’t done a break test of before and after the crosshatching, but I have fished it all these years without any problems other than the occasional cloudiness on the surface. with fluorocarbon. You retain the flexibility and knot strength of mono, while gaining near invisibility in the water. Other fluorocarbon problem areas eliminated are: the reported questionable knot strength and stiffness of some, plus its higher cost. At about six dollars for that pack of Scotchbrite© pads, plus a little time and effort, this crosshatching looks like and is a definite fishing tackle bargain. Does this crosshatching weaken the mono? Infinitesimally is the word that comes to mind when I’m asked that question. The one effect that is a minus will come into view after it’s fished a day or two; the disturbed surface might turn a bit cloudy. Change the leader or cut the cloudy portion off. All of the reels I use offshore have Spectra© on them and about

The reflection reducing, stealth effect of crosshatching is of greatest benefit from near the surface to about 8-10 ft. down in clear water, when viewed from near horizontal. This effect also comes into play at night around a brightly lit production platform far offshore — think tuna fishing. This is another of those instances where adapting a product to a non-related use results in a tried and proven true new technique — you never know where you will make your next fishing tackle find. Using a Scotch-brite© scouring pad to create a low-cost nonfilament alternative to fluorocarbon while keeping mono’s basic characteristic — it’s Scotch-brite© Magic!

Take a walk with me down Bour bon Str eet an d T h e Str a n d ! “Born and raised in Thibodaux, Louisiana in ‘78, I relocated to Texas in 2007, first to League City then to Galveston Island. It is astounding the number of Louisiana folks that call Texas home. One doesn’t have to venture far to find similarities between Cajun and Texas culture. Food, music, celebrations, and a deep sense of family are all evidence that Texas culture has influenced Cajun culture just as much as Cajun culture has influenced Texas Culture; to the point where it’s practically indistinguishable. This column highlights many of the similarities in cuisine, music, lifestyle, and good folks that keep the roots of Cajun culture alive right here on the Island. So, let’s roll. “ -Christopher Bergeron

New Orleans Bourbon

Galveston Strand These two cities have so many similar characteristics to entice the senses, its difficult to tell which is Bourbon and which is The Strand. Both have the sights of a historical era, sounds of an entertainment dominant atmosphere and the flavor of multi-cultural crossovers that makes both cities unique, yet familiar.

O

ne of the fascinations that attracted me to Galveston Island, first to perform then to call home, was the subtle, sometimes theatrical wonders on tap all year long. The similarities of the city compared to that of the New Orleans area are so close, it can be difficult to distinguish what cobblestoned street you are standing on. Being a creature of habit and my extreme opposition to dramatic changes, I instantly became comfortable with the environment. The images in this article illustrate a few of

the similarities I’m referring to in a side by side comparison. Both cities have managed to preserve its history despite some significant storms- an impressive feat which shows the dedication and perseverance of its residents throughout the years. From the architectural brilliance of an era when attention to detail and strength in building was prominent to the countless curio shops of the Strand, you’ll find historic beauty, bits of Cajun and Creole culture, and no shortage of spooky stories wherever you go.

New Orleans

Galveston

The rumble of a trolley on tracks are coming back to the Strand. Until then, the trolley bus contributes to the familiar signature ambiance associated with New Orleans culture. The existent tracks on the Strand remain to be an aide-mémoire to the era.

New Orleans

Galveston

Today, Galveston has one of the largest, well-preserved, and historically sig significant concentrations of Victorian architecture in the United States. Most of New Orleans architecture is Colonial Spanish and Colonial Caribbean downtown and a mix of Victorian and Spanish uptown.

New Orleans

Galveston

The horse and buggy trotting down the Strand fill the era gap nicely as well. Both cities offer tour rides on the buggies, driven by historical ninjas that tell the stories of various landmarks. This is another classic characteristic of New Orleans that is a familiar pleasure to see on the Island.

New Orleans

Galveston

Mardi Gras, one of the largest festivals on the Galveston Strand as well as in New Orleans, reveals a colossal similarity between the two cities. Both have an incredible financial impact and both come with the extreme, sometimes raucous party crowds.

Galveston

New Orleans

A line of shops, boutiques, artwork displays, and street artists exists on both the Strand and Bourbon offering anything to fit a particular taste. Voodoo and Witchery Shops are huge in the New Orleans area. Guess what? The Island has the Witchery!

Galveston

New Orleans

Bourbon Street is known for Live music all the time. Classic Rock, Blues, Brass Bands, Piano Boogie, Jazz, Zydeco, Cajun, Country; it’s all there. The Strand area matches the live music mentality most of the time with many styles, even a little Dr. John!

New Orleans

Galveston

New Orleans

Galveston

Being a nightlife powerhouse, Bourbon has a ton of laser light rave project projected walls, subwoofer laced clubs, packed wall to wall, even on the weekdays. With a few high-energy dance clubs as well, most packed wall to wall, the Strand doesn’t disappoint in the cool nightclub scene.

THE BEST: People Watching! The weirdos of the world are in full swing in both hotspots. The funny thing is if you ask people where they are visiting Galveston from, 1 in 20 will say New Orleans. In New Orleans, if you ask people where they are from, 1 in 20 will say Galveston. The irony!

Similarites between the two cities are not new. Galveston and New Orleans has been on the same wavelength for generations. The two cities have shared architects at various points, as well as citizens. The similarities are inevitable. With that said, unless you want to hit the casino’s, why leave Galveston to visit New Orleans? The culture and party is alive and well right here on the Island.

with Jan & D e a n Hello Jan and Dean! I am having a difference of opinion

with you every single day. To me, a wedding should a celebration

with my boyfriend, now fiancé. We have dated for two years

something new and exciting. The start of a new beginning together

now, and we finally decided to set our wedding date. We are

in life. If you have already lived together for some time before

compatible in every way. We are in our late 20’s, and have had

marriage, it’s like you are just doing a wedding to make everything

separate places since we met. Here’s the problem: he wants us

legal. Not much romance in that. My advice is to stick to your guns.

see no need in this. We stay at each other’s apartments all the time. I think we know each other well enough by now, so why the need? He thinks we should move in together in order to get to know what it is like being together 24/7 before we marry.

this may sound silly in today’s time, but I want to be married before we move in together. Period. So, what is your advice? - Diane is distressed

H

ello Diane - You never stated why you don’t want to live together, but that doesn’t really matter to me. I have always believed that “I

don’t want to” is the world’s best reason when we don’t

want to do something. It sounds to me like your fiancé wants a free trial run. He says that he wants to move in together so he will know what it is like to be together 24/7. He doesn’t say he wants to because he loves you so much that he wants to be together HAVE A QUESTION FOR JAN & DEAN? Go to wavesgalveston.com & ask away. eflections By: John and Kathy Valastro

“ I t ’s H o t O u t T h e r e! !!” I hear that all the time, especially this t ime of the year. Yes, it’s hot, it’s humid, and it’s m osquito time. Islanders get it. Mos t of us have gotten used to i t, some never do, but they love our island life so much they just take it in stride. We take a lot of things in stride which may be the reason we get tagged as a strange group of people who live on the i sland. Sometimes we come across as aloof or a “just don’t care” attitude, but I’m here to defend the people of the island. After al l, I’m one of them, a BOI (born on the island). Others are identi fied as IBC (Islander by choice), visitors, tourists, or Island workers (those who come to the island to work and then return to the mainland to live). The BOI’s and the IB C’s have come to accept the heat, the h umidity, the mosquitoes, and the hurri canes. Our attitude is one in which we t ake things as they come. We deal with whatever confronts us at the moment, and then we move on. Sometimes things don’t get done in a timely fashion, and that can be a problem (city government is a whole other reflection!). The people vested in the island do care and I find most people on the island to have a big hearts and will come to your rescue i n the drop of a hat, or a t least how quickly you can get out a text!

It’s fun and it fi lls our calendar, especially in the heat of summer. We can usually find a place with fewer visitors and tourists, but i f th ey show up, they are a blast to hang out with. Yes, July, August and September are hot, but the islanders know how t o surviv e the heat, the humidity and the storm s. It’s just a part of our lives and we go with the flow. So, if you are a vi sitor or a tourist, find a local wa tering hole and enjoy a nice cold glass or water, soda, tea, or fruity drink to keep cool. If you wander into one of t he local bars, and there are many such as Midtown Tavern, G izmos, Hul i Huli Hu t, Bubbas, 3-Doors Down, Patrick’s, T he Library, The Monkey, Flip Flops, The Turtle, The Playground, Alibi’s, Market Station, IPC, Sharky’s, Jac ks , and Albatross, just to mention a few, y ou can find cold beer, wine and s etups. Just remember, we Islanders love sharing this island and all its offerings wi th vi stor s and tourist! Hope to see y ou during the heat in summer on the island, we’ll all have a cold one i n hand!

Ask any one of us and we will all say the same thing; people on the island are amazing friends. Yes, we l ike to meet at our local bars, have drinks, and listen to live music with our local musicians and bands, li ke The Band Stra nded, The Line Up, Radio Live, Bri tney Doyle, Keith Neubauer, and Geoff Fish to name a few.

olunteering at the Ronald House brings a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to those who are willing to give a few hours to perform minor but essential tasks needed in the every-day function of a home as large as this one is. Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases. If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-chacha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine!
