Nature’s medicine: National Park unveils major new health and wellbeing strategy
A
groundbreaking plan launches to make the South Downs National Park a “natural health service” for the South East Coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week, the National Park’s first Health and Wellbeing Strategy sets out a bold vision to connect more people with nature to help improve both mental and physical health. The plans include working with GPs, healthcare and communitybased providers to deliver more opportunities for “green social prescribing”. Sometimes called community referrals, a GP or social prescriber may refer a patient for non-clinical services that boost health, such as walking or cycling in the South Downs, becoming involved in arts based activities or surveying wildlife. The long-term strategy also identifies priority areas in the region where the Authority will work with communities, partners and healthcare providers to help more people discover the wellness benefits of the National Park. It comes as robust research shows that spending time in green spaces has a measurable positive impact on people’s health. The growing evidence shows that people who have accessed green spaces report a reduction in stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression. Last month an ONS study reported that more than 40% of people say nature, wildlife and visiting local green spaces have been even more important to their wellbeing since the coronavirus restrictions began. The Health and Wellbeing Strategy was approved by Members of the National Park Authority at a meeting in March. Kate Drake enjoying an uplifting walk in the National Park Kate Drake, Health and Wellbeing Officer for the National Park, said: “We’ve long known that National Parks are places for escape, adventure, enjoyment and inspiration. “But we also know that these amazing natural assets, including the South Downs, are underused in terms of the benefits they offer for people’s health and wellbeing and in particular those dealing with stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness. “We’ve only really scratched the surface of what the South Downs National Park can offer as part of a natural health service and that’s why our first Health and Wellbeing Strategy is so important.

“It clearly sets out our stall of what we want to achieve over the next decade – becoming a hub for health and wellbeing opportunities for communities across the region. “A key part will be working with partners and healthcare providers on specific projects, but we must not also forget that a big part of this is about engagement. We want to start by planting the seed that getting out into nature is beneficial on many levels. This strategy will help that grow and we’re really excited to get started.” Key goals of the strategy include: • Develop projects and collaborations that link to the “NHS Five Ways to Mental Health and Wellbeing” – be active, keep learning, give to others, connect and be mindful. • Work to give access to nature and green space to new audiences, including those from areas of deprivation, young people, people with disabilities, and those from black and ethnically-diverse communities. • Develop with partners a range of activities that provide opportunities for physical activity, connecting with the landscape through arts and heritage and volunteering opportunities. • Develop “taster days” to show people the wide range of benefits of nature-based activities. • Providing up-to-date and user-friendly information to health professionals across the region so they can better understand the National Park and how to access it for health and wellbeing. Kate added: “We’ve set some ambitious goals and one of the keys will be partnership working. We really want to bring individuals and organisations on this journey with us and hope that in five years time many more people will be looking to this amazing natural space on their doorstep as a way to boost mental and physical health.” The National Park has started up a dedicated website section, which will be developed further to provide resources for both the public and professionals on health and wellbeing. It includes tips on topics such as forest bathing and covers examples of some of the project work. FOOD & DRINK
Focaccia with Olives, Rosemary and Tomatoes Ingredients • • • • • • • • •
310ml warm water 3 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 450g plain flour 2 teaspoons caster ugar 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh finely chopped rosemary 2 teaspoons or 7g of dried yeast 10 sliced pitted kalamata olives Sliced cherry tomatoes as desired
Method
Place water, yeast, sugar and 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a mixing bowl and set aside in a warm place for 5 mins until frothy. In a medium mixing bowl stir together the flour and half the sea salt then add the yeast mixture and 1 teaspoon of the rosemary, stir thoroughly. Beat with a dough hook of an electric mixer or with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms into a ball. Scrape the dough onto a lightly

floured breadboard and knead for 10 minutes adding only enough additional flour to keep it from sticking. Cover with a clean towel and rest the dough in a warm place for approximately 45 minutes or until doubled in size. Grease or spray baking sheet or pizza tray. with the remaining oil. Place the dough on the prepared pan/tray and pat it into your desired shape. Cover and let rise in warm place 20 minutes; preheat oven to 200 degrees during the last 10 minutes of rising time. Make deep impressions in the dough at 1-inch intervals with a finger or handle of a wooden spoon. Lightly press the olives and tomatoes into the surface of the dough, drizzle the top with 1 tablespoon of oil and sprinkle the remaining rosemary evenly over it. (Optional: sprinkle top with a little coarse salt). Bake for 25-30 minutes or until edges are golden brown and the focaccia sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Cool slightly on a wire rack and serve.

We would like to initiate an initiative to hold events based on Alresford’s founder Bishop Godfrey de Lucy (c1200) starting this year, but with the view to make it an annual
event. This was proposed by the Alresford Historical & Literary Society to be built upon to include all sections of the community over an extended period of time. GARDEN The Garden at Tichborne House Tichborne, Hampshire
The Tichborne family have lived on this site beside the river Itchen since the 12th century. They have a fascinating history - there’s a Catholic martyr; Chidiock Tichborne, a lost at sea heir; Sir Roger Tichborne and his impersonator; Arthur Orton known as the Tichborne Claimant, whose trial gripped Victorian society. Then there’s the Tichborne Dole, the giving of flour to locals, which continues on 25 March each year and was instigated by the charitable Lady Mabella Tichborne in the thirteenth century. The bones of the garden may be rooted in this history with a large house containing a
National Garden Scheme Hampshire Now we are into May, dare we hope that those early morning frosts are a thing of the past. I certainly can’t remember an April with such a prolonged period of frosts. It amazes me how tolerant some of the plants are - apart from my ‘Alstroemeria Indian Summer” - but now that it has had a bit of a trim it is certainly looking a lot happier. After the 17th May, pre-booked tickets are not necessary for the majority of gardens, but available for those who wish to book ahead. June brings forth a plethora of open gardens, far too many for me to mention in a short article. I have selected a few which are within the vicinity, which you might like to visit. private chapel beside a moat, ancient trees and Victorian outbuildings but the essence of the garden is progressive and created almost entirely over the last 20 years. An original plan by Michele Hickman for an area around the moat has been tinkered with, extended and adapted over the years. More hedges have been planted and core structural shapes have been integrated to give the perennials and grasses a backdrop and winter interest. Seed is left to settle and the sinuous bed shapes are in direct response to the surrounding rolling hills and curvaceous boundary hedges visible from the house. There is a fully productive walled kitchen garden with cut flower beds, fruit trees and vegetables plus a rickety greenhouse. Outside this walled garden, you will find an orchard and berry cage. The garden is very much a work in progress and private family space but for a few days this year, it will be open for people to visit and enjoy (hopefully) and maybe even get inspiration from for their own gardens. The entrance fee from these days will be donated to charities chosen by Catherine Loudon, whose late husband Anthony was the grandson of Sir Anthony Doughty Tichborne, and their 3 children.

Dee Haas, Chair, said: ‘Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do and are able to achieve. We currently have around 115 volunteers and counting! We would like to say a very big congratulations to all of our awardees and a huge thank you for their dedication and commitment in supporting CPRE Hampshire.’ In Basingstoke and Deane: • Valerie Bedford was recognised for her tireless commitment and support in organising catering and refreshments for numerous North Hampshire District Group fundraising events over many years. • Peter Bedford, a former CPRE Hampshire Chairman, has raised thousands of pounds over many years for CPRE Hampshire, championing the importance of raising funds and leading the North Hampshire District Group on highly successful fundraisers. • Nevil Wilson, a former CPRE Hampshire trustee, made an enormous contribution to the activities of CPRE Hampshire’s North Hampshire District Group over a considerable number of years, first becoming involved as Secretary in the year 2000. We are very sad to report that Nevil sadly passed away on 2 May aged 93. In Hart and Rushmoor: • Philip Todd has made an enormous contribution as planning lead for CPRE Hampshire’s North East Hampshire District Group, having become involved over 25 years ago. In the Test Valley: • Moya Grove from the Test Valley District Group for her stalwart support of CPRE Hampshire’s volunteer-led Planning and Policy Group, monitoring and leading responses on the topic of water, sewage, and the protection of Hampshire’s sensitive chalk streams. • John Moon from the Test Valley District Group for his in-depth knowledge of numerous quantitative and statistical factors that relate to housing and planning which he has brought to excellent use on both local matters for CPRE Hampshire, and to national issues affecting the whole country. CPRE Hampshire President, the Earl of Malmesbury thanked everyone involved with the charity for their efforts to strive to keep Hampshire beautiful. He extended his very grateful thanks for the leadership of Dee Haas who is stepping down as Chair

CPRE Hampshire, the countryside charity took the occasion of its Annual General Meeting on 24 April to recognise the special contribution of some of its longstanding volunteers. Volunteers from Basingstoke and Deane, Hart and Rushmoor and the Test Valley were awarded certificates for their positive contributions and achievements ranging from knowledge and expertise in specialist subjects to long service.

In her update on campaigning and influencing over the year, Dee Haas highlighted the growing public support for the countryside and an exciting new hedgerows restoration project. Simon Murray, Chair of the National Board of CPRE, gave a talk on countrywide priorities and emphasised CPRE’s strength as a widespread grassroots organisation, bringing together people with different interests in the countryside and with the key blend of the national vision and local focus. Cllr Fiona Isaacs Report It is my great honour to have been elected as your Winchester City Cllr for Alresford and Itchen Valley ward. I will continue to work hard to show my commitment and passion for our wonderful Market Town and surrounding villages. Before being elected I made a commitment to some key important issues in our local area and will continue to support these. Namely the walk-in access to the recycling centre, which is fundamentally important to many residents. I also campaigned for concessions on the brown garden bins for the elderly, parking issues are continually raised and I continue to liaise with WCC officers on these as well as requesting the long-overdue parking strategy plan. I aim to attend many Town and Parish Council meetings as possible to fully understand more the needs of each area. Several residents have reached out for assistance and in these cases I will continue to support them. A commitment will be to work with and support all of our fantastic local groups who do so much for our area. I aim to provide regular updates and am already working with local groups on better broadband support in some areas as well as ensuring that a separate plan for 21-22 is written for Market Towns that take into account our unique qualities. I will be supporting the Alresford Litter Pick on Saturday 22nd of May and look forward to the re-opening of the New Alresford Town Trust’s 3 sites on 31st May, along with many other people I am sure. Weed Control & Pesticides Garden weed control can be challenging, let’s understand why
process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die. Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing the weed. So why don't selective herbicides kill non-target plants? The main reason is non-target plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive. When to use weed killers Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective; however, the results will take longer.
When I first began studying plant science, I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed?’ The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticide to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue. Weeds can be relatively small, like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed, like grasses, broad-leafed, like dandelions or woody, like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds. Non-selective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied onto existing lawns, but will control only broad-leaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact on grasses. How weedkillers work Some work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth, twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the

How to use Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication, you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed. Is one application enough? If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time, then often one application is enough. However, some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present. Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. Just Four + Two Contemporary Artists Alton, Hampshire and then in London at the newly-refurbished Gallery at The Tabernacle, Notting Hill.. A change of scene in 2018 brought them to the Rock Institute, Rock, Cornwall for an exhibition hosted by Valency Fine Art for a hot summer week competing with record temperatures and World Cup Football. In 2019 Just Four were hosted by the Quintus family at Bourton House Tythe Barn Gallery, Bourton-on-the-Hill, Gloucestershire to complement their famous garden. It poured with rain all week, so the visitors spent more time than they might have done looking at the diverse and spectacular exhibition in the historic barn.
Just Four Contemporary Artists are a group of female artists who thrive on painting together. Jenny Hill-Norton, Anthea Stilwell and Jo Ellis started working creatively together after previous art-related careers: Anthea as an art teacher at Harrow School, Jenny as a Glass Engraver and Landscape Gardener and Jo as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator. “We find that we produce our most inspirational pieces while working together," says Jenny who co-founded the group. "It’s all experimental work covering a huge range of subjects – created for the sheer pleasure of painting!” Media includes oils, acrylics, mixed media, watercolours, collage and a range of drawing materials including graphite, ink and charcoal. The three painters are joined by Craig Narramore, a contemporary sculptor and

furniture maker based in Buckinghamshire, who combines the latest technologies from working as a prop maker in the film industry together with skills from his early grounding in the art of cabinet making. He brings a unique twist with his creations and adds a 3 dimensional depth when the four artists exhibit together as 'Just Four'. Their work is exhibited throughout the UK and sold at affordable prices. Exhibitions Just Four was launched in 2013 with an exhibition at The Cork Street Gallery, Mayfair, London. Its enormous (and overwhelming) success led the Four to continue exhibiting together as a collective group, taking stands in 2015 at the Affordable Art Fair, Bristol, and the Brighton Art Fair. Hugely valuable contacts were made leading to an invitation to be Artists in Residence with a Just Four Exhibition at The Late November Gallery, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire in 2016. The City Space Gallery, Discovery Centre, Winchester, Hampshire was the next venue where they were invited to exhibit in the spring of 2016 followed later that year by a buzzing exhibition at Jardinique,
2019 also saw them back in Cornwall at The Crypt Gallery, St Ives Society of Artists in St Ives as invited artists exhibiting with Edwina Broadbent. Again pouring rain brought the visitors in to view the show to their advantage. In 2020 Nadia Waterfield invited them to exhibit in her annual Autumn Art Fair at the newly renovated Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Gallery at Goodworth Clatford, near Stockbridge, Hampshire. Just Four have also exhibited together with the full family of the Stilwell Art Group at – Josie Eastwood's Gallery, Sparsholt, Hampshire in 2011; Riccos, Liss, Hampshire in 2013; The Oxmarket Gallery, Chichester, West Sussex in 2015 and at the gallery space at The Stockbridge Town Hall, Hampshire in 2017 and 2019 with plans for an exhibition there again in 2022. 2021 brings a great new opportunity with an invitation for Just Four + Two to exhibit at Nadia Waterfield Fine Art Gallery near Stockbridge, Hampshire in the Summer from 12th - 26th June 2021. Citizens Advice Winchester District Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District advises on how to choose a local tradesperson. I’ve been saving up to have my kitchen redone, but I’m a bit worried about it. The last time I had any work done on the house, it took more than double the time and ended up costing me a fortune. I’m looking for a different builder this time, but how will I know I can trust them? Many of us are desperate to make improvements to our homes after so much time spent in them during the pandemic, but it’s important to choose a trader wisely. Here are some steps you should take when choosing a trader: • • •

Find a Trading Standards ‘approved trader’ - use the internet to search for one in your area or the Government’s approved trader scheme TrustMark. Get references or recommendations - ask people you know or ask the person you hire for examples of work they’ve carried out in the past. Try to avoid contractors who won’t give references it’s a sign they could be dishonest. Find out if they are a current member of a trade body - trade bodies have codes of practice and can help resolve problems
if things go wrong, so check your trader is a member. Ask who they’re registered with and then check the trade body’s website. • Only use certified traders for gas and electrics - it’s dangerous to use someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. Check the Gas Safe Register for a list of traders and use a registered electrician who can certify their own work. When you’re having a kitchen fitted, it’s worth checking whether the person you’ve hired will be doing the electrical or gas work themselves. If not, check who they will be using and whether they’re registered. • Get a written quote - this is different to an estimate. A quote is legally binding and the builder can’t change it without a good reason - for example, if you ask for extra work to be done. Try to compare quotes from a number of contractors to make sure you’re getting a fair price. • Get a written contract - this should cover exactly what you’re paying for and everything you’ve agreed on, like timings, payments, who will pay for materials and subcontractors. • Think carefully about payment - opt to pay in stages rather than upfront. Where possible, try to pay by card as this can afford you extra safeguards if something goes wrong. • Keep copies of receipts - also keep your written contract as evidence, as well as photos of any problems if they arise. We had received feedback from patients about having a system with a queue function so that is what we have invested in. The new system now means we have the function for training & monitoring of calls. It allows us to have additional recorded patient messages, call options & a call queue facility. The queue is set up to allow up to 15 people in a queue at one time, when the queue is full a message is given to ask the patient to call back to prevent excessively long wait times. All GP’s now have a dedicated line to call out, so there are no issues when contacting patients for telephone consultations. To give you an idea of the number of calls we receive we have got some call stats for you; Week commencing 26th April; 1183 -Calls received. 24 minutes & 28 second - Longest answer time. 3 minutes 2 seconds – Average answer time. 2 minutes & 2 seconds – Average talk time. Patients can expect a longer wait time daily, between 8.30-9.30 which is when we receive the highest number of calls. We can now monitor our telephone system & can make informed decisions on staffing. These telephone stats will be reviewed regularly. We are aware that some patients would like to know where they are in the queue, we have been in contact with the phone company & unfortunately this function is currently unavailable to us. COMMUNITY / RETAIL Gardens Are Good For You The National Garden Scheme is marking its annual Gardens and Health Week in May with the launch of comprehensive proof that gardens are good for you. The charity’s fully interactive, digital booklet entitled The Little Yellow Book of Gardens and Health is packed with stories and case studies from garden owners, garden visitors and beneficiaries who have found solace and improved health and wellbeing by immersing themselves in nature. Alongside are views and expert tips on how to get the most from your garden experience, be it hands on or as a visitor. In her foreword to the booklet National Garden Scheme Ambassador, Rachel de Thame says: “In a year like no other the confinement everyone had to endure, the anxiety and, in some cases, real tragedy has shown just how important gardens are to everyone’s physical health and mental wellbeing. “The pandemic forced the gates to close on many gardens in 2020 and as a result, the National Garden Scheme decided to capture this unique moment in time in a report: Gardens and Coronavirus 2020 The importance of gardens and outdoor spaces during the lockdown. Alresford Twinning Association Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary
Alresford Twinning Association was founded on 12th May 1981 when it had its inaugural committee meeting. Bricquebec in Normandy was chosen as our twin town because it was a thriving historic market town similar to and roughly the same size as Alresford. It is 12 miles from Cherbourg and therefore was easily accessible by ferry. At that time the aims of the Association were to promote and foster friendship and understanding between the people of Alresford and the people of Bricquebec and to encourage visits by individuals and groups, particularly young people, between the linked towns. This was to broaden the mutual understanding of the cultural, recreational, educational and commercial activities of the two towns. These largely remain the aims of the Association today and there have been regular annual exchange visits with people from Alresford going to Bricquebec and staying with French hosts and vice versa. There has also been a range of Twinning social events throughout the years for local people to meet and engage in loosely French related activities e.g. petanque, wine evenings, quizzes etc. There is an informal French conversation group for those who wish to practise their French. Whilst we cannot currently arrange an exchange visit with Bricquebec, we are planning social activities for summer and autumn this year and are very much hoping that we can have a proper celebration of this important 40th anniversary with our French friends next year. Now at last we have an opportunity to throw off the shackles of Covid restrictions and play Bowls in the time-honoured manner so dear to our hero Sir Francis Drake before his finest hour! Consider, if you will, the importance of Bowls to our Merrie England, when, wits sharpened by the challenging game on that July afternoon in 1588, our
hero saved us from a future of tapas, siestas and tener que hablar espanol!! Yes, the challenge may be great, but with practice and tenacity you too could emulate Sir Francis, or at the very least appreciate why, even with the enemy in sight, he chose to finish the game before grabbing the galleon keys and sailing forth to victory. We have every hope that, from 21st June, and provided everyone else does as they should, (our own behaviour of course being exemplary), we will be free to mingle over exquisite tea and cakes after an exhilarating game against a skilled but evidently not invincible opponent, and modestly respond to their Captain’s losing speech with humility tinged with quiet satisfaction! Of course, bowls isn’t all about winning – after all, the sideboard can only carry so much silver - but is a game combining skill
and daring, played in the sunshine and shade of a beautiful English summer afternoon. Apart from our practice roll-ups, (see below), Home and Away matches against local teams are usually played either on a weekend or on a Wednesday afternoon, and we try to arrange that teams are chosen such that all club members can have their chance to play in several matches, thus improving their game and seeing a little more of the world of bowling. We are a friendly bowling club, situated in Sun Lane, close to the centre of Alresford. During the bowling season (roughly mid-April to September) we play many friendly matches against local clubs, have a number of internal competitions and knock-out tournaments, and regular roll-up sessions. Roll-ups are opportunities to meet, play and socialise with other members, and take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 10.00am to 12.00 noon, and Thursday evenings 6.00pm to 8.00pm (with a social element). Visitors are welcome at roll-ups, and at other times when accompanied by a Member. 2021 is a good year to join the Club, as we have a one-year-only half-price membership offer of £40 for Playing members (£10 for Social Members). As ward councillors, we endeavour to cover all the local parish meetings usually individually, but sometimes together. At these meetings we can pick up on issues that come up in the parish councils on a range of matters The concerns that came up time and time again were: 1) Traffic problems: Speeding is the main problem, both in towns and villages and also along rural roads. The speed limit on single carriageway rural roads is 60mph although on a great many roads that speed would be highly dangerous. It is estimated that 40% of all road deaths occur on this type of road, which are not as heavily trafficked as urban roads and motorways. Apart from speed people also complained about the lack of consideration shown by many to other road users. Horse riders complained of inconsiderate cyclists and car drivers, pedestrian complained of manic cyclists. After many years of seeking resolution from Hampshire County Council we are proposing that our parishes act together, 2) Potholes: It is noticeable that in France and Germany the rural roads are maintained to a higher standard than ours. Is it wise to let our roads and other infrastructure quietly decay? Most householders are very aware that deferring maintenance year after year is not sound economics. Leave a window unpainted too long and you end up replacing the whole thing. 3) Poor quality broadband: This is not limited to villages, there are some areas in Alresford where for some reason, such as distance from fibre optic connections, the rates are very slow. 4) Recycling centres: There were many complaints about these. The booking system is working better than at the start. Many people felt that restricting access to car drivers was a clear injustice and defied logic. The claim that pedestrians were at risk is nonsense, as every visitor has to walk around the site to access the skips. Since all are paying council tax, all should have access to the communal facilities, imagine if it was decreed that only car drivers could use public parks! These problems are not within the remit of Winchester City Council, however, we will continue to seek solutions. We also found several foreigners, often resident for a considerable time, who were unaware that they were entitled to vote in local elections. We shall push for more advertising to make all residents in the country aware of their democratic rights and to set out the simple steps needed to add themselves to the electoral register.

A boy and his Alresford Crafts owl have been reunited after 35 years apart and it was Roy Gentry of Alresford’s Museum who enabled the touching reunion. “Oliver the Alresford Crafts owl was a much cherished companion which was tragically lost all those years ago”, said Roy. “His Dad had been trying to find a replacement for years when he finally found the Alresford Museum. As luck would have it, we had more than one Oliver,” said Roy “and we were delighted to be able to send him to his home

100 Years of the RBL
Alresford Crafts, the maker of soft toys and beautiful dolls was created by John and Margaret Jones and for 25 years until 1992, they produced these collector’s items. Famous around the world, an Alresford Crafts owl has even appeared in an episode of Doctor Who and ET and now Alresford’s museum has a display of the much loved toys. The Museum has a range of Alresford Crafts dolls and stuffed toys on display at the Old Fire Station in the town’s Broad Street, along with fire memorabilia, including an 1893 horse-drawn steamer fire engine, photos, exhibits and finds from the local area. May the 15th 2021, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal British Legion, (RBL), was commemorated in Alresford by a small wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial on the grounds of St. John’s Church. As Alresford no longer has an active branch of the Legion, the ceremony was attended by representatives of the other Armed Forces organizations. Attendees were, from the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), Mr. Derek Sweetenham BEM, Chairman, Mr. Alan Langford, Standard Bearer, Air Cdr Keith Monkhouse, President, Mr Peter Colquhoun, Padre, and Mr George Scott. From the Royal Naval Association (RNA), Mr. David Ottley, Chairman, and the RBL was represented by the local fundraising organizer, Mrs. Sue Cox. Messrs Sweetenham and Ottley are also members. A short prayer was followed by the Last Post, a Silence, and the Reveille. This was played by Mr. George Skayman. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the three organizations.

New Alresford Town Council The Annual Meeting of the Council At the meeting on 4th May, Councillor Marilyn Weston was re-elected Chair of the Council and Councillor Ann Bean as Vice Chair together with the Chairs of our four Committees for the next municipal year. Grants We would like to invite grant applications from local groups and organisations serving Alresford residents to be considered at the Town Council meeting to be held on 27th July 2021. In April, we were delighted to award three grants. Alresford New Leaf benefitted from the funding of £560.71 for the purchase of equipment and seeds to support community wildflower projects. We also gave a grant of £1000 towards the annual upkeep and maintenance of the churchyard at St John’s Church. Our final award of £500 was to Alresford Allotment Society to rebuild the manure enclosure at Spring Gardens allotments. Information about grants can be found on our website. Hampshire Road Race League as last year’s league was cancelled last year and the new season does not start until September. Sadly, this year no spectators will be permitted, the changing rooms at Arlebury Park will be unavailable, registration will be outside and there will be no water points on the route. Runners will be required to maintain social distancing before and after the race, and not to gather in groups of more than 6 people.
The annual Alresford Rotary 10k road race is scheduled to take place on Sunday 21st June starting at 10 a.m. As of mid-May this is the day before Covid restrictions are due to be lifted and accordingly, the race organisation will be significantly different this year to take account of the government guidance for organised outdoor sporting events. This year’s race will not be part of the
At present entries to the race are limited to those that had entered in 2020 before last year’s road race was cancelled. If the rules permit Alresford Rotary hopes to be able to open up entries for local residents in the two weeks before the race. Entries will be on a first come, first served basis. There will not be any entries on the day.

past year, the school are missing essential funds. Usually, we raise £5,000 alone by hosting the school Spring Fair which we have now missed for two consecutive years.
To reduce the number of people in Arlebury Park the usual children’s races will not take place on 20th June but Alresford Rotary hopes to be able to hold these later in the year once all Covid restrictions have been lifted.
During the first week of July, the children are aiming to run the distance from Alresford to Devon (over 125 miles!) to raise vital funds for their school and some much-needed outdoor sports equipment.
The children are so excited to be challenging themselves to run a personal distance on the school field - we are trying to communicate to the children that a small individual achievement can make a big difference when they all work together, whilst harnessing our school values to Strive, Aspire and to Trust themselves, whilst showing Resilience and Supporting others. Our children’s wellbeing is of utmost importance to us, so we are focused on educating them on ways to keep their minds and bodies, fit and healthy, movement being one of the ways.
Due to the Friends team not being able to fundraise in the usual way over the

temporary road closures in force for the duration of the race. The race marshals will ensure that these are enforced for the shortest duration possible in order to minimise inconvenience to local people and businesses. Traffic along Pound Hill, West Street, Broad Street and the Great Weir may be affected between approximately 10.00 a.m. and 10.15 a.m. with the main disruption being on Drove Lane and Abbotstone Lane, where there will be very limited vehicle access from 10.00 a.m. for about an hour.

Their joint expressions of horror gave them away. “What? What?” Their son-in-law frowned from his zoom window. “Bobbing for apples not your thing?” Bless him for his good intentions; busily arranging a surprise party for his wife’s birthday. “Um, perhaps not, you know, COVID and everything…?” Himself, far more tactful than she, got in first. Son-in-law’s face was a picture. Literally, a picture, what with being framed on the screen and all. But figuratively too, as it dawned on him that a group of largely un-vaccinated under-forty -year-olds potentially sharing saliva might be…“Ohhh. Yes! I mean no! A bit dodge. Hadn’t thought that one through, clearly” son-in-law conceded. “Ditto blowing out the candles on the birthday cake, I suppose” he added. Crikey! Even her super-cautious mummy-gene hadn’t flagged that up. Viewed through pandemic-tinted spectacles, the familiar ritual now appeared slightly stomach-turning. Spittle spattered sponge anyone? She wrinkled her nose. Mmnn, might be giving that a miss for evermore. There was, upon discussion however, lots of fun to be had without close contact. The garden party theme could still embrace skittles, a coconut shy and pin the tail on the golden retriever. A COVID-safe bash was a go and excitement all round to be getting together again for an actual, real, face-to-face party! With drink. Lots and LOTS of drink. The three co-conspirators signed off their covert mission meeting with instructions to ‘stay safe’. Himself later observed “Relieved that, in the name of social distancing, ‘pass the orange’ has been voted off this event. Plays havoc with my cervical spondylosis.” She agreed “And ‘Twister’ too. My rheumatoid arthritis wouldn’t have thanked me.” They nodded in unison and remarked “Silver linings.” The cake scenario had made her think, though. “I know we’re on the road to normal-ish, but I wonder what we’ll lose forever. Will we go back to greeting people with a kiss on the cheek? Funny Mum wouldn’t be sorry about that. Said it was ‘continental’” she reminisced. “It is quite European” he agreed.

In fact, she’d missed it all terribly. “But seriously, will we shake hands again, rather than that excruciating elbow bump thing. Even hard bitten politicians look embarrassed doing that. And if we do go back to the hand shake, will we immediately reach in our pockets for the hand sanitiser? But might that be considered a bit rude?” She foresaw navigating an evolving post-pandemic landscape littered with faux pas. Himself agreed. “Did you know..” hello, here we go “that shaking hands originated from showing the other person that you weren’t holding a weapon and therefore ‘safe’. So might a more logical greeting now be to flash a phone app to show that you’re COVID-free?” “More logical, but a lot less like a greeting” she murmured quietly, as Himself warmed to his subject. “And the ‘cheers’ thing,” uh oh – there’s more “that’s a throwback to pouring a little of one’s drink into the other’s horn, goblet – whatever - and vice versa. Just to show that the drink wasn’t poisoned. Will we still touch our glasses together – but then surreptitiously avoid any contact with the bit that connected? Awkward.” “That’s a thought” and yet another one she hadn’t had already. “Actually, on that subject, I’ll think twice before sharing a hip flask again. Now seems rather intimate slash infectious.” “Eugh... Yuk. Well, I’m predicting some initial confusion over what to do with your hands – like when you pose for a photo. Coupled with a bit of air-kissing. But gradually we’ll grope our way towards a brave new normal, darling.” Seemingly unaware of the irony, they concurred. “Suppose we’ll just have to suck it and see..?”

COMMUNITY Alresford Police I hope everyone has been staying safe. I would like to start by asking people to report crimes to us via 101. We have had crimes, which are not being reported or are being posted in Facebooks groups and not the police. Whilst it is a good idea to let people in the area know what is going on via Facebook crimes should be reported to the police first. If incidents are not being reported to us then we will not know what incidents are taking place. In addition, please report things that may seem suspicious as it could help develop a bigger picture. I will be holding another beat surgery that will be taking place on the 16th of June. The beat surgery will take place at the Alresford community centre between 11:00-13:00 and I will be covering safe at home so please feel free to pass by. Are you eating enough? Many people are trying to cut back on calories, but did you know it is estimated that around one in ten people over the age of 65 are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition. The reasons for this can be varied. Mobility issues may affect the ability to shop and cook, dentures fitting incorrectly may make eating uncomfortable and poor health or low mood may affect a person’s appetite. What is good nutrition? Good nutrition is getting the balance of food types right, thinking about portion size and the frequency of meals. Find a balance across the day by eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, 3-4 portions of starchy carbohydrates, 2-3 portions of proteins like fish, eggs, beans and meat and 2-3 portions of dairy or alternatives. What are the warning signs of nutrition issues?

At the end of 2019, the harmonium was not always producing the notes and harmonies initiated by its player. There were some blanks and some novel noises. This instrument had been donated by the Salvation Army at the instigation of David Mortock, who was the bandleader who

brought a band to accompany Hymns in the Wood, for each year since 2015.The previous harmonium was wrecked by vandals in 19?? . As repair was beyond the financial means of the church; an electric keyboard was bought for a modest amount and played outside Socially Distanced (SD) on 9th August Good news was to come however within a few days when Paul Hellard a self-confessed harmonium addict, got in touch to say he had overhauled the instrument. This he had done brilliantly.

While the work has been going on there has been a stream of visitors taking their Covid exercise on the footpaths that cross Bramdean Common. It has been a pleasure to allow them to have a look inside. as for many the CiW was where they had been christened years ago, but since forgotten. The church is operating again..(sometimes outside). Services will be at 3pm on the second and fourth Sundays of each month until the end of September. All are welcome including dogs, squirrels, birds, horses and wellington boots. Jackie’s County Corner I’m back and very grateful to all of you who took the time to vote by post or in person at the elections on the 6th May. I was elected to be your County Councillor for the Itchen Valley Division. Although we could not meet you earlier, we were allowed to meet you at your door after the 8th March and I had hundreds of conversations- both happy and sad. Proposals for new incinerator sites in Hampshire fill me with horror. If this county is taking recycling seriously, we must do that: recycle what we can and not build more capacity to burn. So, it is disappointing that even though pubs and shops are open again, the recycling centres are still appointment only- and still only for cars. I’ll talk more about recycling in the context of the new Hampshire Minerals and Waste plan in July’s county corner. EDUCATION Godolphin releases World Premiere of a motet written for their Vocal Ensemble by the Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir. Judith Weir has set words by Dame Julian of Norwich: We sekyn here rest. They come from Revelations of Divine Love which is said to be the earliest surviving example of a book in the English language, written by a woman. The performance was released on Julian of Norwich’s Feast Day, Thursday 13 May 2021. This work forms the final part of a four-part series of works as a collaborative project between Multitude of Voyces C.I.C. and Godolphin . The first three works in the series - All shall be well, by Carol J. Jones; Our Endless Day, by Hilary Campbell; Love was his meaning, by Gemma McGregor - have been published by Multitude of Voyces C.I.C. in Volume 2 of the ground-breaking series Sacred Music by Women Composers.
Olivia Sparkhall, Director of Godolphin Vocal Ensemble, commented, “Sung in 14th Century Middle English, and accompanied by harp, this is a moving setting of words written by a woman who lived most of her adult life in self-isolation. There are distinct parallels with our experiences over the past year, where much of the rehearsing for this premiere has taken place remotely, and during which time many of us have experienced self-isolation for ourselves. We are tremendously grateful to Judith Weir for writing such a powerful piece for Godolphin.
