ight around the corner, next month, you have the first ever PAVE/X: Pavement Experience (Jan. 30 - Feb. 1), which Brandon Noel, is going to kick-off 2024 with three jam-packed days of Editor equipment, entertainment, and amazing educational content. One big change is that our annual Pavement Maintenance Awards issue will come out in January 2024, just NEXT MONTH, so that all of our award winners can be recognized on stage in front of the industry and their peers, and everyone in attendance will be able to pick up a copy of the magazine (or a few copies) that highlight their hard work and their businesses. Going forward, this will be the new norm. What does that mean about next year’s submissions?

THE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE AWARDS In years past, including 2023, the closing date for award submissions hovered around the first week of November. This ensured that a fair majority of contractors had either ended their season already, they were near to ending it, or that they were, at least, slowing down from their peak.

This coming year, the Pavement Awards submission window will open Monday, July 1, 2024 and close on Friday, Oct. 4, 2024. That is about one month earlier. For those of you who got your submissions in just under the wire this year, please make a note of this, or have your office managers make a note, so that you don’t accidentally miss out on your chance to nominate your work.

TOP CONTRACTOR Similarly, we are making a slight change in the window for submissions to our annual Top Contractor lists. Every year we publish a list, in print and online, of the Top 50 contractors, based on their independently verified business data, in the fields of paving, striping, pavement repair, and sealcoating. Additionally, the data that comes in through these submissions acts as a defacto, “state of the industry,” for pavement maintenance contractors, because it provides valuable information about how real-world contractors are doing what they do.

Earlier this year, we had to extend the deadline due to the nature of many businesses finalizing and verifying their data for the previous year. We felt that simply making it end with the first quarter makes more sense. So the Top Contractor submission window will open Monday, Dec. 11, 2023 and will close on Friday, March 15, 2024.

XL Specialized Trailers has introduced new options for the XL Guardian 110 Hydraulic Detachable Gooseneck (HDG) trailer, a standardized construction trailer.

The new line of options includes an 18-in. loaded deck height version and 60-in. axle spacing option. In addition to the 22-in. loaded deck height option for the main bed, XL now offers an 18-in. loaded deck height option. Operators can adjust the height of the deck for diverse loads with a five-position variable ride height in the neck and manual ride height in the rear.

Showcases Drop-Deck Pan Tilt Model Felling Trailers

The Felling Trailers’ drop-deck pan tilt model has undergone design modifications to increase operator ease of use and safety. The Pan Tilt is a gravity tilt trailer, using gravity and a center pivot point for tilting the trailer bed. Felling’s Engineering team recently reviewed the Pan Tilt’s design looking for ways to improve operator ease of use along with production efficiencies. Modifications have been made to the Pan Tilt’s locking mechanism, lighting, license plate mount position, and location. The tilt locking mechanism is the most notable of the modifications improving the production process, flexibility to function with optional features, and most importantly, operator ease of use. The previous locking mechanism was a purchased part that required modification and multiple latches dependent upon a trailer build’s selected features, power up/down, or a toolbox, as it was mounted on the front of the trailer. The new locking mechanism is located on the front roadside of the trailer, operating as a lever that releases a lock bar located under the front deck frame. All the components for this locking system are sourced internally, improving fit and function.

Makita has released eight new grinding solutions for construction projects. The release includes five 5-in. grinders and three 4.5-in. grinders providing options for a range of applications. The new GA45 and GA50 series grinders feature Makita’s SJS II Technology. SJS II is a mechanical gear drive system that helps prevent motor and gear damage by dampening the force and releasing the gears when the wheel is forced to stop. And since it’s a mechanical feature (not electronic), SJS II does not require a restart after the wheel binds. SJS II utilizes a leaf spring and cam gear drive mechanism that is engineered to minimize vibration during extended use.

Air Conditioning Solution for Open-cab Equipment Cabin Cool

The M100 is an air conditioning system designed to allow a heavy equipment operator to stay cool while working in an open-cab environment.

Weighing only 50 lbs., the selfcontained, compact unit is 24 in. long, 11.5 in. wide and has a height of 8 in.

The M100’s small electric heat pump with fan will cool the air around the

equipment by 25° F. In other words, on a 100° F day, the unit will make 75° F air. The system provides up to 600W of cooling power, even though it consumes less than 275W of electric power. The cooled air is blown at high pressure and the operator is able to control the power, temperature, fan speed and direction of air.
