uring the slow winter months, we enter tradeshow season. And while sending your crew to a tradeshow may seem too expensive, it’s actually an investment in your business and way to ensure it continues to grow. Here are 10 reasons to attend tradeshows in 2018 and beyond: 1. Industry Exposure: Tradeshows help you and your employees gain knowledge and exposure to new trends, products and resources that are available for your construction business. This is a great way to learn about new products to help your crew be more productive, new regulations in the business and other growth opportunities.

2. New Ideas: Tradeshows stimulate new ideas and creative ways to support your business despite the economy, past seasons and more. Where you will gain this knowledge is endless – your competition at the show, your general experience and your participation.

Heads for Houston WOA 2018 to be held in Houston and the show is expecting its biggest crowd yet

W

orld of Asphalt (WOA) 2018 will held to Houston, TX March 6-8 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The show is recognized as a ‘Fastest 50’ trade show for demonstrating the greatest percentage of growth show-to-show and in 2016 won for record gains in both attendance and exhibit space.

WOA is geared toward asphalt, highway/street, pavement maintenance and traffic safety industry professionals from small to large contractors, materials producers, state and agency specification personnel, maintenance companies, manufacturers and service providers. Over 9,000 visitors came from across the United States as well as worldwide for the show in 2016 and since everything is bigger in Texas, the 2018 show is expected to be the largest yet.

How Will Autonomous Vehicles

IMPACT

ROAD BUILDING?

Highways aren’t going away, they’re just going to change. And fast.

W

hen picturing the coming age of autonomous vehicles (AVs), it’s easy for some people to get stuck on picturing the cars themselves. Their sophisticated sensors, flashy dashboards and roomy cabins have created a well-deserved buzz and interest for humans who’d like to read the newspaper on their way to work.

In order to stay on the road, avoid collisions and obey traffic laws, AVs rely on a series of sensors that help the cars understand the environment in which they're traveling in real time. By using a combination of ultrasonic, radar, imaging and LiDAR sensors, a digital road map is formed ahead of an AV to essentially help it "see" where it's going.

The problem however, is that this vehicle technology is advancing faster than our infrastructure can adapt.

While AVs themselves are glamorous,

vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies are essential to the whole picture.

Without V2I tech, the AV dream might not come true (see sidebar for more).

Roadview, based in Madison, WI, specializes in geospatial mapping of transportation infrastructure. The field work that Steve Caya, head of production, and others at the company have done over the years has underscored the need for V2I tech, he says.

“Just as human drivers require visual and auditory cues to ensure a safe journey, driverless cars will need vast amounts of vehicle-to-infrastructure communications data to understand their world,” he says.

FUTURE ROADWAYS So how will that impact the way our roads look? Caya says that roadways in the automated world will look very different due to vehicles being safer and more efficient.

“AVs have the potential to travel more precisely than human operated vehicles so roadways in an automated world will

be smaller with more efficient right of ways,” he says. “AVs’ unique navigation capabilities are expected to enable narrower traffic lanes, reduce the number of lanes needed to accommodate traffic demand, remove the need for medians and reduce signage.”

Here are a few ways roadways and travel will change with AVs: Lane Size: Lanes today are designed to account for driver wander and human error. If lanes were designed to the width of an AV, the lane width could be reduced by 20 percent.

Less Signage: Signs and signals are important features of our transportation system today as they provide drivers with the information they need to keep the system running smoothly. But with the emergence of Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and V2I technology, future roadways will not need a large number of traffic signs and signals as information can be transmitted to AVs wirelessly and in real-time.

Traffic Reduction: AVs are able to drive more efficiently than humans can so they can ride closer together, reducing

Parking Lot Revolution: Since there will be less cars on the roads, there will be massive changes made to the location, form and amount of parking needed as AVs can park themselves and remain in the transportation network while waiting for a passenger.

traffic and congestion. And since 93 percent of crashes are caused by human error and 25 percent of congestion is caused by traffic incidents, congestion should be reduced even further with AVs. Drop-Off Lanes: AVs are also expected to reduce the number of vehicles needed by promoting ride sharing which will create a need for drop-off lane construction. These will be drop areas that are as close as possible to the entrances of destinations.

WHAT’S NEXT? The Senate is preparing consideration of a bill to improve roadway safety and AVs (S. 1885). If enacted, the bill may result in new road standards to ensure optimization of pavement materials and markings.

To help build confidence in self-driving vehicle technologies, the Senate legislation would require manufacturers to provide a safety evaluation report to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that outlines any roadway or infrastructure assets, such as pavement markings, required for the operation of the vehicle or automated driving system, as well as an explanation of how the vehicle/system would respond to unexpected changes in external conditions, such as work zones.

V2I’s Impact on Roadways Vehicle to Infrastructure or V2I communication is a critical component of a connected vehicle environment. This system of hardware, software, firmware and wireless communication enables the dynamic transfer of data between vehicles as well as between the vehicles and elements of the roadway infrastructure.

Most AVs will communicate with the infrastructure around them through sensors in other vehicles and through signage.

The vehicles will detect these sensors and tell the vehicles to stop, slow down and move over as necessary.

Most automakers and road builders agree that this onhighway style of operation for AVs is relatively simple when compared to busy urban environments. However, certain scenarios like passing through tollgates and work zones are much more difficult for autonomous vehicles to safely navigate, and it quickly becomes evident that these vehicles cannot rely solely on cameras and sensors.

This year, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Macomb County Department of Roads, collaborated with General Motors (GM) for more V2I testing on two busy intersections.

The bill would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to complete rulemaking and establish two advisory councils on AV technology and consumer education.

The bill also would require NHTSA and the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center within the DOT to complete several studies on the issues surrounding the use of AVs. It’s estimated that implementing the legislation would cost $22 million over the 2018-2022 period.

While Congress is figuring out the logistics, planners and contractors should start positioning transportation infrastructure for what’s coming. Caya says a mix of dedicated AV lanes and normal vehicle traffic is most likely what’s coming first.

“State and federal highways may present easier opportunities for dedicated AV lanes initially,” Caya says. “Highways have simpler traffic patterns, fewer intersections and few points of ingress/egress than local roadways.”

The Mound Road traffic signals, located at the intersections of 12 Mile and 13 Mile roads, were able to send real-time data to the vehicles, which could alert the driver of a potential red light violation.

In the test, development vehicles were able to receive data from the traffic controllers on signal phasing and timing. This collaborative validation of direct data communication between the traffic signals and the vehicles marked a significant step forward into the world of next-generation automotive research and development.

This type of connected technology holds promise of drastically reducing crashes that result in death or serious injury, especially at busy intersections.

At the same time, 3M is working with MDOT to make safer work zones by embedding 2D barcodes inside orange barrels.

The barcodes are tools that infrared devices in the vehicles can read and communicate to both the vehicle and the driver.

Manufacturers are testing the messaging the vehicles receive from the barrels and how the vehicles are interpreting it.

3M is also studying what the best paint stripes are for roadways that will carry AVs and is developing a more reflective paint for LiDAR sensors.

The Cinnaminson Plant The Cinnaminson 500 TPH Unified Drum facility, which includes both Astec and Dillman components, was brought online in June of 2016 at a site once occupied by an old 1-1/2-ton batch plant. It took several months to make

“Asphalt plant sites are hard to acquire due to strict local and state regulations,” Mokienko notes. “We bought the site in order to acquire the permit.”

The other new plant, located in Hillsborough, will be in full operation by this fall. The Dillman 9 ft. 6 in. by 54 ft. counterflow drum, featuring 3/8in. constructed V-type veiling flights, is fired by a Phoenix 100 MBTU burner that can run on natural gas, #2 fuel oil

BURNER TUNING for Liquid Propane

While LP fuel is the least expensive option for you asphalt plant, not tuning the burner properly can cause hazards to your plant operations As I’ve said before, the burner tuning procedure is complex and exacting, but the results are well worth the effort. In addition to reducing emissions, you can expect improved fuel efficiency over a poorly tuned burner. Kinda like blowing $100 bills out the stack. Not to mention polluting the air for our kids to breathe.

I’m the authorized Honeywell Representative for Hauck Asphalt products in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, most of the Northwest including Alaska

and all of Canada west of Manitoba so I will be concentrating on Hauck products. Just remember, with very few changes, the exact same procedures apply to any make and model burner.

Best advice I can give is to always read and follow the instructions that came with your burner when you got it. Last month, I discussed the how to set-up and tune your burner for natural gas.

This month I want to talk about liquid propane. However I am going to take a

Now don’t get me wrong, done correctly LP is a very safe fuel. But all four of these LP accidents I mention had one

In the rush to save fuel costs by switching to a less expensive product, these owners failed to follow all of the safety protocols that should have been followed. They paid a heavy price to save some money on fuel costs.

thing in common: The conversion from diesel to LP was performed by the plant owner or his staff without the help of any burner manufacturer or any trained burner technician.

In my opinion this oversight is what led directly to the accidents at each of these plants.

This month I want to talk about how to avoid the problems that caused these accidents. When changing from diesel to LP there are some important changes that need to take place.

Each of these LP explosions took place because one or more of the following safety requirements were ignored.

FIRST: While they will work for a time, the fuel shut-off valves, the fuel modulation valve, even the piping for LP is different than those same components used for diesel. The fuel pressure for diesel is typically 35-lb. to 100-lb. LP is typically around 225-lb. so these valves and other components are pushed way past their safe pressure ratings. Even the steel piping is typically changed from schedule 40 to schedule 80 pipe to cope with the higher pressure. All flex-lines are also upgraded. This pressure consideration

Generally the shut off valves will start to leak internally, allowing LP to leak out the nozzle of your burner. Being a liquid, LP pools in the lowest part of your drum and builds up creating a VERY dangerous situation.

SECOND: Burning LP also requires some changes in control room. Let’s start with the exhaust damper control.

When burning diesel, generally the burner control will cycle the damper from closed to wide open. The control might hold it open for a few seconds, then drive the damper shut so the burner can light. At that point the burner control will start a post purge timer and when that times out it will attempt to light the burner.

Some more rudimentary burner controls simply go through a timer without opening the damper. When burning diesel, this timer can be as short as 10 seconds. Hardly enough time to purge the drum and baghouse if they have LP in them.

In the four accidental explosions that I have been involved with, the two situations above worked in concert to set up a situation that resulted in a fatality at one plant and two severe injuries at another. These accidents

After all of my negativity in the preceding text, I would like to be sure that my readers understand that I am not trying to discourage switching over to LP. In fact, if it is the least expensive fuel available to use, I actively encourage the conversion. However, I very strongly recommend using burner professionals to implement the change-over.

Work Zone Safety with Proper Traffic Control Plans

Safety does not happen by accident – it requires planning and attention by everyone on the jobsite

T

he national safety research council has estimated that a single human life is valued at over $8 million, but preventing a work zone fatality is priceless to that worker and their family.

And while you can’t control the traveling public, there are steps every company needs to take to keep their workers as safe as possible during construction.

Each year, more than 50 highway workers are killed and thousands more injured when struck by vehicles or equipment at road construction sites.

This is why it’s so important to have a traffic control plan and always be diligent in finding ways to prevent work zone intrusion.

TTCP Unless you’re extremely lucky, work zones require alterations to existing traffic control operations so that safe driving operations may continue while the needed work is performed. These work zone environments provide a challenge in terms of both safety and mobility for many state, local and other agencies that perform construction and/or maintenance work on public highways.

Unless road user have received advanced warning, they are generally unaware of the upcoming changes in their travel environment until these work zones are visible to them. This is why temporary traffic control plans (TTCPs) are used to assist drivers by providing appropriate visual cues and guidance.

The work zone traffic control must be implemented with standard treatments to consistently satisfy the expectations of the traveling public.

And while every work zone is different and requires a plan that’s specific to those needs, there are some general components to a TTCP. The type of work you’re doing will define exactly which type of traffic control plan you need. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) provides for uniform design and setup of highway work zones and includes guidance for the development of TTCPs that determine the flow of traffic through the work zone. However, the six principles listed below can help promote safe and efficient movement through and around every type of work zone while protecting workers and equipment.

1. Plan: Make traffic safety and temporary traffic control an integral and high-priority element of every project from planning through

Make sure the traffic control is set up within a reasonable time prior to construction so motorists don’t become complacent and ignore warning signs when work begins.

2. Traffic: Inhibit traffic movement as little as possible and inspect traffic control elements routinely, both day and night and make modifications when necessary. Evaluate any near misses (skid marks, damaged barricades) and redesign the plan accordingly.

3. Awareness: Provide clear and positive guidance to drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians as they approach and travel through the TTCP. Keep the public well informed with real time information on travel boards and warning signs. Cover or take down the signs when workers are not present and keep the length of the work zone appropriate to the work in progress so that motorists do not increase speed after passing through a long stretch with no sign of work activity.

4. Safety: Pay increased attention to roadside safety in the vicinity of temporary traffic control zones: Increase taper length and install positive protective barriers to shield workers from intrusion. Consider additional measures such as sensors, handheld radios and intrusion alarms to keep workers safe.

Also be sure workers are wearing all appropriate high-visibility safety apparel and properly illuminate the jobsite if working at night.

5. Comply: Train all persons that select, place and maintain temporary traffic control devices. Road builders should assign a traffic control supervisor who is knowledgeable in traffic control principles.

6. Enforce: Establish proper legislative authority to implement and enforce needed traffic regulations, speed zones, parking controls and incident management.

ITCP While having a TTCP is important, it’s also important to address an internal traffic control plan (ITCP) as an equal number of workers are killed or injured

by activities inside the work zone.

An ITCP helps to protect workers on foot in the work spaces of the work zone. Because workers must often work close to large vehicles and equipment, the movements of workers, equipment and vehicles must be well coordinated.

ITCPs also help reduce risks for operators by identifying hazardous locations like drop-offs, power lines, etc.

An ITCP starts with a diagram showing the layout of the work space and the movement of personnel and construction vehicles within the work space. It will include access and egress points as well as symbols for where

speed of traffic that will be passing by the work zone. Equipment and material staging areas, batch plants, etc, should be included as well and hazardous areas should be identified at this time.

• Determine the construction sequence during the project: In this step, major work tasks or operations should be identified. The overall space requirements for each operation during a particular work shift should be estimated as should the frequency with which these operations move.

Any significant sub-operations should be identified as well. Finally, the types of vehicles and equipment

dozers, spotters, dump trucks, etc. will be located.

ITCP notes should include safety points, injury reduction measures site-specific provisions and duties of various personnel.

Here are a few basic steps to help develop an ITCP: 1. Identify project and ITCP scope: The ITCP should be considered from the very beginning of the project as the size of the work area will dictate things like the amount of right-of-way available and the number of lanes that will be closed. The ITCP designer should determine the limits of the project and assess the amount and

required for each operation should be listed, along with an estimate of the number of workers that will be on the ground.

2. Determine the locations and safe movements for vehicles, equipment and workers with each operation and draw the basic work area diagram(s): This step is where the actual planning and design of the ITCP begins. For each operation and suboperation on the project, the following should be noted on a site drawing: · Layout of each vehicle and equipment used · Typical location of each within the operation

Since most equipment is large and has a cab, blind spots can be very large so indicating where the equipment operators can’t see and avoiding workers on foot in those areas is paramount. Workers on foot should be located as far as possible from vehicle paths. Parking and break areas should be staged away from conflict points. ITCP designers can find blind spot equipment maps on the NIOSH website at: https://www.cdc. gov/niosh/topics/highwayworkzones/ BAD/imagelookup.html Once the vehicle layout is determined, the designer can create “worker free zones” on the ITCP. These zones will include pinch points between vehicles, locations within equipment turn radii and equipment blind spots where workers should not be.

3. Determine vehicle and equipment movements to and from each operation: Access to and egress from the work zone and to each operation is the next activity to consider. Once the vehicles enter a work zone, the ITCP should illustrate how vehicles are to progress to the operation destination.

4. Determine safe movements to/ from and within each operation: After determining vehicles and equipment locations and movements within each operation, the travel paths to and from the operations from the work zone access and egress points. Consideration should be given to how workers will move on the ground. Therefore, the ITCP drawing should include location of worker parking, the path the workers will take from there to the work operation, the location of portable toilets and break areas and also staging areas. This will help ensure that workers will not cross active work vehicles and equipment paths.

5. Assess and resolve potential internal traffic conflicts: After all work operations, equipment paths and

worker movements have been laid out, the next step is to identify and resolve potential conflicts. Many operations move along the project and others occur at fixed locations so determining how work will progress will determine potential conflict times and locations so adjustments can be made.

6. Identify individuals who will need to understand and use the ITCP: Since the ITCP is an integral part of the projects safety plan, if your company has a safety professional on staff, they should lead in the creation of the ITCP and the site supervisor will oversee the implementation. Project managers, foremen, supervisors and other lead personnel may need to work together to come up with a safe ITCP if no safety professional is on hand.

7. Develop the ITCP communication, monitoring and enforcement plan: The final step is to see that the ITCP is effectively implemented and enforced. During this step, responsibilities are assigned and the staff is educated. Workers are provided training in both overall ITCP concepts and the specific elements for their assigned work areas.

To function properly, the ITCP must be reviewed and modified before each shift so employees can receive instruction on how it will be implemented that day.

Just because a crash hasn’t happened, doesn’t mean the risks for one aren’t the same. Prepare your crews the best way you can with traffic control plans properly designed to help keep them safe.

Understanding the hazards faced by highway workers and raising awareness of the dangers you face every day can help generate measures to reduce work zone incidents.

“It’s not just about aesthetics,” says Christopher Miller, vice president of E-ZOIL, manufacturer of performanceenhancing fuel additives and cleaning solutions. “The dust and dirt that equipment accumulates on exterior surfaces while driving around can pave the way for many problems, including paint peel-off and rust buildup."

According to Miller, the scorching sun, driving rain, blowing dust and dirt, tree sap and even bird droppings can have a negative impact on a equipment’s paint and clear coat. In areas that experience snow in the winter, road salt is the worst enemy, while in places closer to the ocean, fleets can show the abrasive effects of salt in the air.

The paint and the clear coat not only make your equipment look clean and

attractive, they also serve to protect the metal and the components underneath.

If grit collects on equipment, a single scratch can gradually wear off the paint over time, and eventually expose the metal underneath.

If contaminants find their way into the nooks and crevices, they can cause rust to start, and once it does, it only grows. Rust is most harmful when it starts in the undercarriage, which houses many moving mechanical parts, and where it is not visible.

Furthermore, when dirt settles on the windshield, rear window or side view mirrors, it can increase blind spots and compromise safety.

Finally, a dirty fleet can communicate the wrong message about a company. Some fleets, for example, are well known for going the extra mile when it comes to keeping their

fleet clean. When their trucks and equipment are seen around town, it communicates a positive message to existing and potential customers.

“A regular washing schedule with high-performance cleaners is critical to the maintenance and longevity of your fleet," Miller emphasizes. “Highperformance cleaners containing high concentrations of specially formulated detergents can remove road film and diesel smoke, cause no water spotting and are safe to use on all surfaces.

They are also biodegradable.”

The Infrared P Regains its Reputation Equipment manufacturers have revitalized a valuable pavement repair tool – and the future is heating up

I

nfrared pavement repair – a process that was often oversold, too-often performed improperly, and whose resulting reputation took a hit setting the process back a few years – is becoming an essential service among contractors’ pavement maintenance options.

“It’s very much an essential tool in a lot of markets,” says Wesley Van Velsor, vice president of Ray-Tech Infrared.

“People tried it and walked away from it but that’s because people were overselling it. They built up expectations that were way too high.”

But people are coming back.

“There’s been a consistent effort to promote the process and more and more people are taking the process seriously and wanting to make it part of their

pavement maintenance program,” says Matt Kieswetter, co-owner of Heat Design Equipment. “Everyone now knows the whole process works.”

“It’s grown into being an essential part of the pavement maintenance fleet, but there’s still a ton of room for infrared to grow,” says Tom Allen, general manager at Kasi Infrared.

THE INFRARED MARKET IN 2017 Cliff Cameron, director of sales at KM International, says KM sold a broad variety of equipment in 2017. “We saw a lot of companies investing in equipment, a lot of government spending, and that’s a good outlook overall for the asphalt industry as a whole,” he says.

Cameron says KM’s typical pavement maintenance contractor bought the self-trailering 4-40 model, which heats patches up to 5 ft. x 8 ft. He says paving contractors are buying the 2-18X which heats up to 3 ½ ft. x 6 ½ ft. for cold joints, seams and small defects. “As recently as five years ago those paving contractors were using torches for those kinds of repairs and now they’re using infrared,” Cameron says.

Van Velsor says Ray-Tech also saw demand for a broad range of its models.

“We’re seeing sales increase across the board in all our lines. People have realized that if they go out and practice it for a while and put some dedication into it and learn the raking and luting effectively they can make a killing on it. It’s that good a process,” Van Velsor says.

“Seven years ago we sold mostly trailer-mounted units, but we seem to have come full circle and are now selling more truck-mounted equipment,” Van

d Process Velsor says. Ray-Tech’s truck-mounted TMV line features four units, each outfitted with a 2-, 3-, 4-, or 6-ton reclaimer and a 6-ft. x 8-ft. heating chamber. “Part of that might be the uptick in interest in reclaimers, which we mount right on the truck with the infrared heater, but that truck market is really booming.”

Allen says 2017 was a good sales year for Kasi, with more municipalities buying infrared units. “The increase in sales year to year is incremental but the trend is up and the mix of customers is changing,” Allen says.

He says that in 2017 Kasi saw a shift to its Patriot truck-mounted models from its trailer-mounted Minuteman line. The Patriot is available with 2-, 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-ton capacity reclaimers and an 8 ft. x 6 ft. heating unit.

“We used to sell more trailer-mounted units because municipalities had plenty of trucks to haul them around.

But you do have to dedicate a truck to the trailer unit,” Allen says.

Kieswetter says that because HDE manufacturers a wide variety of equipment, they can sell a good mix of product to both contractors and municipalities. “And we saw steady growth in both markets in 2017,” he says.

He says that in 2017, HDE sold larger models than in the past – and sold them to contractors doing parking lot work – particularly its P1600 trailermounted unit which can heat an area 16 ft., 6 in. x 6 ft., 6 in. “We sold a whole different mix of equipment than we had in the past. It seems to go in cycles.”

Dave Strassman, president of Asphalt Reheat Systems, says sales for ARS went well in 2017 and he expects them to get even better. “We’re finding that once contractors see all that heated repair can do they don’t want to be without it,” he says.

“Some of those trucks or trailers are difficult to fit into some tight locations to make a repair. The smaller you are, the more portable you are and that seems to be what people look for,” Strassman says.

Infrared Heats Up Paving Joints Ray-Tech’s Wesley Van Velsor says that using infrared to heat longitudinal joints during paving is finally starting to gain some traction among paving contractors. “It didn’t take off like we expected, but it’s starting to take off now,” Van Velsor says.

“It provides a better seal at the joint and enables better compaction at the joint so it’s a competitive advantage they can offer.”

He says Ray-Tech offers a paver-mounted joint heater as well as a trailer-mounted unit, and the larger pavers are using the paver-mounted unit while smaller pavers are using the trailer unit. “Even one pavermounted joint heater can make a big difference in joint quality.”

Heat Design Equipment’s Matt Kieswetter agrees the use of infrared for joint heating is picking up since agencies have turned to checking density on the joint and apply penalties and bonus awards. Kieswetter also cited two large projects (more than 15 miles in Tennessee and more than 18 miles in Ontario) that is a new process of hot in place recycling in motion, using a train of infrared heaters to repair existing longitudinal joints.

This process is designed to replace mill and fill that leaves two more cracks along the centerline joint.

That process was essentially a hot-in-place recycling train that used an 80-ft. infrared heater 3 ft. wide to reheat the joint. “The joint was scarified, rejuvenator was added along with some mix and it was compacted to form a seamless longitudinal joint,” Kieswetter says.

He says on those jobs the material was mixed in place but HDE plans to bring equipment to the market in 2018 that will actually pick up the heated pavement, remix it on board and then replace it as the train moves.

a market which slowed in 2017. “The industry economically has taken a downturn this past year and many states and municipalities are experiencing financial issues and budget restraints,” Larsen says.

Thermotrack makes two models, each of which folds for easy transport and which can heat an area 6 ft. x 9 ft. Larsen says Thermotrack is different from all other infrared heating equipment in that it relies on a patented “heat motion” system in which the heating element moves back and forth across the pavement. The heating element can also move up and down, “a first in the industry.” He says this movement safeguards against overheating the surface and damaging the binding properties of asphalt, which is especially critical in stamped asphalt.

“Stamped asphalt still makes sense and is a good value-added business when using infrared,” he says. “Stamped signage is also very popular for many business and is on the increase.” Thermotrack heaters were designed primarily for decorative stamping and thermoplastic application, but Larsen says “heat motion" also works well for patching and repairs.

RECLAIMERS BOOST INFRARED SALES A number of the manufacturers have credited an increased interest in asphalt reclaimers for the steady growth of sales of infrared equipment.

“People are now looking for ways to reuse old asphalt, so combining infrared with a reclaimer is a great way to do that,” Kieswetter says. “Everyone wants to be able to reuse that old mix, they just wanted a better and easier way to reuse it.”

He says up until 2017 HDE’s bestselling reclaimers had a 2-3 ton per hour capacity, but in 2017 the demand shifted to reclaimers with 5-12 tph capacity – and he says both contractors and municipalities are buying the larger units.

“The smaller reclaimers weren’t a great help to larger paving contractors but with the larger recyclers they can travel a great distance from the plant and make the repairs they need to be more cost effective. That was difficult for the big pavers when they could only haul 2-3 tons of mix,” Kieswetter says.

Cameron takes the value of reclaimers even a step further, noting that the increased cost of hot mix asphalt (from $45 a ton to the area of $70 a ton in the last 10 years) means it’s more costly to waste material you buy.

“One of the best investments you can make even if you don’t buy an infrared machine is a hot box reclaimer because it enables you to have mix available when plants are closed so you can generate revenue all winter long repairing trip hazards and other defects in parking lots,” he says.

“If I’m talking to a customer over the phone and he’s new to the industry and has a limited budget, I’d recommend to get a hot box over infrared because he can buy the amount of mix he needs to use and use what he buys and maximize his profitability,” Cameron says. “A hot box is an instant revenue generator so buy that first and then buy the infrared unit.”

Van Velsor says that reclaimer sales is the fastest-growing segment of Ray-Tech’s business. “We’ve always offered storage boxes and reclaimers but today we’re primarily selling reclaimers because they can really help a contractor extend the season,” he says.

He says the most-popular units are infrared machines with 8- or 10-ton reclaimers attached. “Eight-ton used to be the most popular but people just want bigger and bigger. We’re now offering

Falcon Asphalt Repair Equipment, which manufactures hot boxes and recyclers that are capable of reclaiming anywhere from 1- to 8-tons of material, says their company is experiencing a trend too. "The number of customers that are considering and actually recycling asphalt has grown significantly in the past few years and we expect the trend to continue,” says Ric Simon, executive vice president, sales and marketing.

MANUFACTURERS CHANGED CONTRACTOR PERCEPTIONS Manufacturers have been working for years, educating contractors, public agencies and end-user customers of the value of infrared – and that effort to revive the industry appears to be working.

Cameron says that much of the increased interest, use and sales of infrared equipment is the result of a concerted educational effort on the part of the industry.

industry, the infrared manufacturers, have worked harder and harder to educate people on the infrared process,” he says. “Once people see infrared they become instant believers in the process.

The industry has created a need for infrared and contractors recognized the need and have utilized their resource to meet that need. Everything worked together.

“Our customers in the industry are savvier and more business-oriented and more interested in buying something that’s going to save them money,” Cameron says. “We’ve seen a lot more sophistication in the customer base and a lot more larger units going out to new businesses.”

Kieswetter sees the same trends at HDE. “We’re starting to see guys who are taking it more seriously – not just guys who buy it so it can be part of what they offer but who are taking the next step to actively market it to their clients,” Kieswetter says. “People are starting to realize that with some marketing and some dedication, there’s good money to be made on the infrared side.

They’re realizing that people are still looking for cost-effective ways to repair their asphalt and infrared can help set

them apart for those customers.”

Kieswetter says HDE is seeing growth more in the municipal sector and as older staff retire they expect to see even more. “The older guys are not as willing to try new things but the people coming in are younger and are more willing to look at new ways to fix the asphalt,” he says. “It’s a greener process, too, which appeals to the younger people more than the older. That’s something many older municipal workers aren’t interested in.”

Van Velsor says Ray-Tech is selling equipment to contractors outside the pavement repair group that generally buys infrared. He says sweepers, sealcoaters and even striping contractors are “testing” the process by investing in a lower-cost, walk-behind unit. “We’ve seen a number of those customers going to a trailer-mounted unit,” he says.

Van Velsor adds that utility companies who handle their own repairs are also buying the larger units, and Kasi’s Allen says that even for contractors, closing utility cuts is a growth market.

He says that a number of counties throughout the country have followed the lead of New Jersey, which requires that utility cuts are closed up with infrared. “It’s in the contract and that’s expanding slowly,” Allen says.

Allen says KASI has also seen expansion in infrared units sold for repairing parking lots. “That makes sense in that the property manager always have tight budgets but they also have liability issues,” Allen says. “So they’re using infrared to keep the parking lot not only looking good, but safe and they can do that without making a major investment.”

Why Infrared Needs a “Best Practices” Study Kasi Infrared’s Tom Allen says that while infrared use is increasing and is increasingly accepted by property managers, what the industry needs is a study that can define infrared “best practices.”

“The industry knows about it and people are using it and liking it but it’s still not considered a ‘best practice’ because no study has been done,” Allen says, adding that estimates for the cost of a valid, multi-year, multiregion study hover around $500,000.

“A lot of contractors are using infrared and some are doing a good job, but some are still cutting corners,” Allen says. “Some people scarify out to the edge of the heated area and we know that’s going to ravel. We

know you need that 6-in. apron around the patch for the patch to be successful. People who are doing that are not following the process.”

He says another problem is contractors often don’t add a rejuvenator to the scarified area prior to adding new mix.

“There’s no official process on using infrared, including whether or not to use a rejuvenator. But asphalt loses its light oils over time from UV rays and when you heat it you lose even a little bit more. It only makes sense to replace those light oils in what you’re restoring,” Allen says. KASI recommends misting the scarified area with 7-8 ounces of rejuvenator.

INFRARED’S FUTURE “Our industry is less than 50 years old so we’re just now coming into the second generation of owners,” Cameron says. “The dynamics of the industry are changing as it’s maturing. We’re seeing an overall sophistication where the industry now recognizes the value of quality equipment that not only produces a quality job and profitable job but also extends the season beyond when the plants close. That’s why it’s a great time to be in the hot box reclaimer and infrared industry today.”

He says another reason he expects infrared to grow is the fact that it’s a relatively “green” process. “The carbon footprint is 50% less than the traditional remove-and-replace method and the process conserves material. A 40-sq.-ft. patch needs 2 tons of asphalt, and rather than buy 2 tons of mix and haul the old stuff to a landfill you can heat what’s there and put in a few shovels full of asphalt. It’s green, it’s more cost-effective than the traditional method and it has greater profitability,” Cameron says.

Larsen says that infrared’s ability to safely heat existing pavement to create seamless or thermally bonded joints or other repairs represents not only a savings for the customer when compared to cold patching and remove-and-replace repairs, but also a better quality and better-looking patch.

Strassman says infrared should become an even more important piece of equipment for contractors because the process gives the contractor control over the heat of the mix “anytime, anywhere.”

“Even when you do traditional patching, it’s nice to have a hot day so you can take your time and work the patch like you want to,” he says. “When you control the heat like you do with infrared, you control the whole temperature of the job and the quality of the repair. If you’re working a job and it starts to cool off or doesn’t look right, just put the unit back over the job and heat it and in a couple of minutes you can rework it.”

PRESERVATION UPDATE Rayner PavementSaver III The new features of the PavementSaver III include a Control Area Network and an Autonomous Rate Control System.

ARC eliminates the guesswork on application rates. The operator only needs to answer a few basic set up questions and enter the desired application rate; the ARC system takes over from there and readies the machine for application. There's no timing, no weighing and no math. ARC adjusts material flow according to the desired application rate, speed and the number of nozzles being used (spray width) to apply a uniform coating. In addition, when spraying material, ARC changes the joystick output to give greater finite control to the operator. The result is a highly accurate machine that applies the volume of material you have designed for the project.

• When the spray is set in “on” mode, the ARC system will limit speeds that could out pace a heavy application. In the spray “off” mode, ARC returns to the full speed range (up to 9 mph) for quick turnaround for high-production projects.

• ARC constantly monitors all systems for possible deviations. If there is a potential issue, the ARC system knows before the operator.

Warning lights and error codes point to the source of the problem, and in many cases, with plenty of notice to prevent down time.

Tips for Finding Top Talent in 2018

Good people will want to work for companies that are competitive, appreciate their talents and help them grow in their career.

ig booms in the construction industry followed by big busts followed by years of slow or no growth make this line of work extremely unpredictable. Given the volatility, it’s challenging for contractors to retain skilled workers when the industry is sluggish.

With the busy construction season just around the corner, now is the time to find the crew members you’ll need to complete the work you’ve already got piling up for the year.

So how can contractors find quality people, then keep them on board for the long term? There are no easy answers, but here are a few suggestions.

1 Recruit veterans. They’re typically team players, well trained and proficient with technology. Find them through groups that connect employers and job-seeking vets.

2 Invest in technology. Today’s on-board technology solutions can bring a new generation of skilled workers to your door.

3 Welcome women. Some experts who train equipment operators say females tend to ask more questions, pay attention to detail, particularly when learning, leading to machine operation with finesse. As with veterans, there are local and national groups devoted to bringing women into skilled construction jobs.

Get involved with one.

4 Connect with diversity. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the construction workforce in 2015 was 28.5 percent Hispanic/ Latino, 6 percent Black and 1.8 percent Asian. Are you tapping into the entire talent pool in your area?

5 Benchmark your compensation package. Make sure you’re keeping pace with the competition when it comes to wages, salaries, paid time off, health insurance, retirement savings and more.

6 Check your culture. Good people want to work where they feel safe, respected and appreciated. They value access to information, opportunities for personal growth and some involvement in decisions that affect their work lives. Does that describe your workplace?

7 Involve current employees in recruiting. Encourage your team to share job postings. Offer financial incentives for bringing new people on board. And remember—your employees are your ambassadors.

What message are they sharing with the world?

8 Commit to training. Be the company that’s known for growing and developing the skills of their employees. A well-trained workforce can drive employee satisfaction while creating a safer, more productive environment.

If you’re investing hundreds of thousands of dollars on equipment to improve the productivity and quality of work you deliver, think about spending a little more to train your paving crew on how to get the most out of that equipment. It’s a great way to provide a solid foundation of basic operating techniques for new hires, and an equally great way to refresh and continue to educate veteran operators.

Companies often tout how their employees are their most valuable asset.

Training those employees can only add to the value they provide when producing quality constructed roads that your customers demand. Equipment manufacturers continue to raise the bar in the development and introduction of technology designed to improve the paving process. And they also know contractors are willing to pay a premium for technology that will help them deliver a better product more efficiently in order to generate a profitable return on their investment.

Training is the essential component that allows your people to get the most out of what the technology is capable of delivering. Knowledgeable operators are more productive and they take great pride in delivering the best product they can deliver. Invest in them and they will help exceed expectations of your customers and improve profitability.
