i Adam. Give us a little background about yourself; when was it that you discovered your love of country music?

Well, I was brainwashed as a kid. When I grew up, my dad had a really big vinyl record collection, and he used to play country music day and night - everything from Johnny Cash to Slim Dusty. I remember I used to sit by Dad’s stereo and strum along to his old records. I just fell in love with the stories and the songs and ever since I was a little kid, all I ever wanted to do was be a country music singer.

It’s ironic now; both my kids love music, but they hate country music! My son likes rock and rap and all that stuff - he’s discovered this great new band called Guns n’ Roses - and my daughter wants to become an opera singer; she’s having classical singing lessons and she teases me and says that she’s going to be a real singer, unlike her father.

They’re great kids; I love them so much - the best thing ever. Sometimes it’s tough being away from them, but I know my wife really enjoys it when I go away; it gives her a bit of a rest! I just call in home every now and then and make sure the kids haven’t

With an impressive career up your sleeve, what have been some of the biggest highlights over this time?

When I was a kid, my dad used to tell me about this place called the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, and it was like the church, the home of country music. I’ve been lucky enough to go over there and sing at the Grand Ol’ Opry; it’s pretty hard to dop this.

You walk out onto that stage in front of a huge big audience ... it’s still the original stage. Elvis Presley stood there, Hank Williams started out there, Johnny Cash started out there on that stage. That was pretty special - to walk out and sing at the Opry.

Tell us about the creative process and inspiration behind your latest album. It was recorded at home in your bar?

Yeah, that’s right. I often put up photos of my bar on Facebook, and I had so many people say to me, “God, I’d love to spend a night with you in that bar of yours!” So I thought, “OK, why don’t I record an album in my bar and invite all the local yobbos and the neighbours in?”

It’s sort of like a live album, and that way when people play the album, they get a bit of an idea of what a night in my bar is all about. It was fantastic; we really enjoyed it.

LAGERS & ALES LAGERS ARE NOT THE MOST EXCITING BEER STYLES FOR THE NEW AGE HOP HEADS OUT THERE, BUT THEY STILL PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN A HEALTHY BEER DIET.

icture a Sunday afternoon in February; it's hot and steamy, and a storm threatens on the horizon.

The lawn desperately needs to be mowed, and it’s now or never.

After a few too many compressions on the fuel primer, you push the lever to choke and begin to yank at the pull start. Six or seven attempts later, you decide it's now time to force the issue by pushing the mower forward using your left arm, whilst heaving back with the right. Each failed attempt brings frustration, and just several minutes later you're wringing with sweat and have formally threatened the mower. Irritated and defeated, you head back for the house. It is at this point you remember placing a few lagers in the fridge, and all is bliss once more.

Pale lagers are very crisp, clean, uncomplicated tasting beers and are best served very cold. When it’s hot and you just want something cold and simple, they’ll hit the spot time and time again.

The defining feature of a lager is its maturation in cold storage and by the use of bottom-fermenting lager yeast.

i Jane. Tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose the “Banded Bee Farm” as your home?

I come from a farming family in Leicestershire and originally trained as a marine biologist. I became interested in permaculture while studying in Tasmania in the 1980s. I moved to Armidale in 2001, and my two children both have Armidale partners. I recently spent five years in Devon, where I was leading the Ecological Horticulture programme at Schumacher College.

I love the climate and landscape of the New England, and it allows me to grow the food I really like to eat. Banded Bee Farm, with 40 acres of flat fields and a kilometre of creek frontage, was the perfect opportunity to implement my permaculture and horticulture training on a farm scale.

Why the name “Banded Bee Farm”?

The Blue Banded Bee is a native, solitary bee that occurs in all Australian states except Tasmania. They are exceptionally beautiful with turquoise stripes on their abdomens and only slightly smaller than the European honeybee.

They are common locally and can pollinate most of our European food plants just as efficiently as honeybees. I want to create a farm where as many Australian species of plants and animals as possible can thrive and be part of the ecosystem and the image of a busy bee, working away on the farm, appealed to me.

You live completely off the grid - how is that possible? How do you operate a functional household using only just our 8 new england focus.

All Australians lived off grid originally and many rural families still do. What perhaps makes me unusual is that I choose to do it close to a sizeable town, and because it is how I want to live. I have long wanted to live as simply as possible and to “tread lightly on the earth”. So I have chosen to live in a one room, converted metal shed (that was here when I bought the land) with 36 m² of floorspace. The only water I use comes from what falls onto the roof. I have 95 W of solar panels on the roof that power a few LED lights and one 12V DC socket that I use to charge my phone and computer. I have a small inverter that allows me to use a few other electrical items occasionally, e.g. printer, radio. I have a simple composting toilet system, compost bays and a worm farm, which allows me to recycle all my biodegradable waste. There was already a septic system here that I can use for grey water in wet conditions, but most of my grey water goes on the garden. There is no water piped into the house. I find that living in this way makes me very aware of every drop of water that I use, and I actually need very little compared to the garden.

I do use the mobile phone system, rubbish and recycling collection services and still buy much of my food. I have yet to break my coffee habit, and the occasional bottle of organic Shiraz goes down OK too.

method Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Melt butter in a pan and gently fry onion and garlic with a pinch of salt. Once soft, add the spices and chilli and cook for a few minutes. Allow the mix to cool, and then add the beef and pork mince.

Mix by hand or with a food processor and roll into small balls. Pan sear the balls in a frying pan until brown, and then finish in the oven for about 6 minutes.

Leave to rest for a few minutes before serving with a rich tomato sauce and thick crusty bread.

his much loved comic opera will be performed in English and is designed to entertain people of all ages, especially newcomers who have never experienced opera before.

Opera Australia visits Armidale once every two years only, so this one-night only production is something not to be missed.

Professional opera - the cast of The Marriage of Figaro is impressive, with multiple principal artists from Opera Australia, plus a live touring Chamber Orchestra under the baton of conductor Paul Fitzsimon. The local Children’s Chorus will be under the direction of Opera Australia’s Regional Children’s Chorus Master, Joshua van Konkelenberg and choral conductor Leanne Roobol, who directs NECOM’s renowned New England Singers.

Lyndon Terracini, Opera Australia’s Artistic Director, is on a mission to make people fall in love with opera, and he believes it’s vital to reinvent productions regularly to make them contemporary and engaging for different kinds of settings.

“The Marriage of Figaro is a great opera to tour, and with the Australian creative team we have to take on this opera; this will be a show regional audiences won’t want to miss! Michael Gow and Robert Kemp are

masters of storytelling, and they have created a version of The Marriage of Figaro that will be unforgettable,” said Terracini.

Director Michael Gow and Set and Costume Designer Robert Kemp give Mozart’s comedic masterpiece a makeover and retell an hilarious account of one household’s adventures over a single day of madness. The awardwinning creative duo has created a brand new production, featuring stunning period costumes and a clever set.

We spoke to Michael Gow to find out more about his vision for The Marriage of Figaro: Michael - you have had a huge role in preparing this production for the road. Can you tell us what you have done?

First, I've written the English libretto, which is a pretty big job. Figaro is especially hard, because there are a lot of ensembles (duets, trios and not one, but two, sextets). All these people singing their responses to the situation at the same time and ending in rhymes and always finding a singable sound takes a lot of work. To keep the piece shorter than its usual four or so hours, I've cut a few arias and replaced most of the recitative with spoken dialogue.

Second, I've made the decisions on where and when to set it. In this case, the designer Robert Kemp and I wanted to give regional audiences a sense of what a period production is like, so we've set it in Spain around the time of its composition, the 1780s. We based the look on the work of painter Francisco Goya.

There have been many different productions of Figaro over the years. What sets this one apart?

This is a touring production, so it has to go up and be taken down in the same day. We've created a single set that can be both indoors and outdoors, with a change of furniture to indicate where the story is taking place. There's lots of plotting and scheming and people coming and going and hiding, so we've made doors a major element of the set to keep the action flowing and to give people plenty of places to hide.

Figaro has been popular for hundreds of years, and its now 2016 - is it still relevant for our audiences?

It's a play about the servants showing up their masters. It was revolutionary at the time, because the aristocrats are depicted as hypocrites and bullies, and the servants are cunning but honest people. I think stories showing up people in power as being no better than anyone else will always speak to audiences.

What advice do you give to a first-time opera goer?

Enjoy the music, laugh at or sympathise with the characters, and don't be in any way scared of sharing your pleasure and appreciation with the singers and the orchestra.

What can people expect on the night? Is there something special for audiences to look out for?

Stunning costumes, a Children's Chorus playing local peasant children, I’m sure at least one tune you've heard before somewhere, a cast of young singers as good as what you'd hear at the Opera House.

THE NEW ENGLAND ILLUSTRATION PRIZE WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE NEW ENGLAND WRITERS’ CENTRE IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE ASPIRING AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS AND ILLUSTRATORS IN THE REGION TO SHOWCASE THEIR CREATIVE ARTWORKS.

allery 126 will host an exhibition of the finalists in the Illustration Prize from the 8th to the 16th July. The prize winners will be announced at the gallery at the opening function on Friday 8th July 5pm to 7pm.

The competition entrants were invited to create an illustration inspired by the poem, A Frosty School Morning, by the well known author, Sophie Masson. The finalists in the competition will be invited to take part in an exhibition at Gallery 126, where they will be able to present their artwork to the public. This will be the first year that New England Writers’ Centre has offered the Illustration Prize, and we hope it

We have many different prizes and cash awards for the first, second and third winning entries, and there is also a youth prize. There will be a professional appraisal of the first prize winning entry, given by a panel of children’s publishers, and for the youth prize, there is a fabulous illustration workshop for the winning student’s school.

We are so excited to have the New England Regional Art Museum and Gallery 126 as sponsors of the New England Illustration Prize, plus two children’s book publishers, who will also be on the judging panel. Christmas Press, who specialise in picture books for children featuring

beautifully illustrated retold traditional stories, such as fairy tales, legends and myths, and who have published a great many books, including Two Tengu Tales from Japan, Three Dragons for Christmas and their latest being Two Tales of Brothers from Ancient Mesopotamia, illustrated

by Kate Durack and retold by John Heffernan.

Little Pink Dog Books is a recent publisher in the area, and they also specialise in children’s picture books for the younger age group. Their first title, The World’s Worst Pirate, written by Michelle Worthington and illustrated by Katrin Dreiling, will be published early next year.

way to Armidale for the weekend. It’s a big boost for local businesses, and once again the council is planning lots of activities across the weekend for visitors.

“The artists we’ve got this year are responsible for some of THE best songs in Australian music history. It’s going to be a day where we celebrate these classic Aussie songs.”

Mr Newton said the artists really enjoyed coming together, and the atmosphere backstage was always great fun.

Euroglider’s singer Grace Knight agreed.

“The comradery between all the artists is fantastic. We get to catch up with each other and discuss gigs and touring stories … not the kind for public consumption! The shows

are high energy, with hit after hit after hit smashed out. Every song comes with a happy memory. The audiences go ballistic; it’s such great fun for the performer and the audience.

1927 lead singer Eric Weideman said: “It’s been really satisfying for us that our songs have stood the test of time and still bring enjoyment to so many people. he exhibition is based upon the much loved picture book by author and artist Shaun Tan and how it was turned into an Academy Award winning short animated film,” said Robert Heather, Director of NERAM. “It has been extremely popular with visitors of all ages.”

NERAM is running a series of storytime sessions for very young visitors (aged 3 - 6 years) and their parents at 10:30am on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings during the holidays.

“You don’t need to book for this

event, but you may want to make a morning out of your visit to NERAM by having a break at our Studio 52 café after enjoying the activity and exhibitions on display.

“We are also running a special free Animating Utopia workshop with our colleagues from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne,” said Robert Heather. “This will be an opportunity for young creatives to learn more about animation, including practical, technical and conceptual skills.”

The Animating Utopia workshop will be held on Saturday 16th July and introduces participants (aged 8 - 12 years) to the animation production process. They watch and analyse The Lost Thing, then design their very own Lost Thing character, looking at shape, colour, texture and then movement when animating their stop motion character through The Lost Thing Utopia.

It includes representation from: Armidale aviation related businesses, airport passenger service operators, NSW farmers, travel agents, Armidale Business Chamber and Locals 4 Locals, Armidale Regional Council and

surrounding councils (Uralla, Walcha, Glenn Innes and Inverell), NSW Rural Fire Service, regional development organisations from government, tourism operators, UNE and the Aero Club.

What does ARAUG do?

The group’s charter is to help facilitate the development of Armidale Regional Airport, to ensure it reaches its full potential as a regional aviation hub in terms of maximising its economic and social benefit. It does this by bringing to council a collective voice of the views and aviation needs of the stakeholders and to help facilitate outcomes for

economic advancement of the region. It meets monthly to discuss airport issues and make recommendations to council.

The group provided valuable input from stakeholders into the development of the Armidale Airport Master Plan, including recommendations on the terminal upgrade, its day to day operation, parking, layout of services etc. The development of the industrial land is also part of the Master Plan; this plan will drive economic growth in Armidale and the region over the next 20 years.

We have had an exceptional past 12 months, with a lot of new initiatives being developed and the expansion of our clinical team. We’re so lucky to be in the middle of Armidale’s health hub - it makes it easy for our patients to access more services. We’re only metres from the nearest pathology lab and physiotherapists. We’re also close to mental health services, radiology and the Armidale Hospital clinics.

Our students are our purpose and we offer a significant amount of services both on and off–campus to ensure that they have everything they need. We’re finding now though, that with a total of eight dedicated staff all under the one roof, we’re able to cater to the community as well as students. This means that all year round whether students are on campus or not, we’re still able to offer the same great services to our regular clients.

Balanced Integration Biodynamics I have been operating my “Balanced Integration” business in Armidale for thirteen years, having previously operated in Perth and Coffs Harbour since 1985.

I came to the fitness industry through my long term interest in the “combat arts”. I have always had a deep interest in the hows and whys of physical performance.

The more I looked into performance, whether it was in martial arts, competitive sport or day to day exercise, the more I came to appreciate that the prior mental and physical preparation were the critical factors in achieving maximal results on the day.

This conclusion led me into personal training, particularly “strength and conditioning”.

After a time, I also started to look at using massage as I worked with my clients, observing that small “aches and pains” impacted quite heavily on performance and efficiency. RunningFestival COFFS HARBOUR’S ANNUAL BENDIGO BANK RUNNING FESTIVAL IS FAST APPROACHING. THE UNIQUE ‘OFF-ROAD’ RUNNING EVENT ON SUNDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER IS NOW IN ITS SIXTH YEAR AND IS ONE OF THE COFFS COAST’S LARGEST HOMEGROWN SPORTING EVENTS. Last year’s festival attracted over 1,500 participants, taking part in the half marathon, 10 km fun run, 5 km run/walk and the 3 km family run/walk and organisers are expecting record numbers again this year.

“Armidale airport has developed into a true regional transport hub,” said Armidale Regional Council Interim Manager Glenn Wilcox.

“Not only have we experienced enormous growth in passenger numbers, but the airport has become a centre for a number of thriving businesses, and this upgrade will lead to even more business activity and create new jobs.

“It is a most important development for the city and surrounding region and reflects a very positive outlook on the economic front.”

Should all go according to plan, tenders will be processed by the end of this year and construction completed towards the end of 2017.

It will cost around $10 M with $7.8 M from the NSW Government and the balance funded by the ARC. Why do we need a new terminal?

In 1996, the existing terminal was built to accommodate 50,000 passengers a year. Now the traffic has almost trebled to 143,000 passengers a year and is growing.

This has put increasing pressure on the terminal, apron and parking areas. The new terminal will accommodate 250,000 passengers a year and has been designed for expansion should the need arise in the future.

“There is no doubt that competitive airfares have driven much of the growth, but there has also been an increasing demand from the University of New England and the education sector generally, the public sector, local councils, businesses and other passengers across our region,” Mr Wilcox said. “It has also attracted more visitors.”

another important factor. QantasLink has advised that its 50 seater Dash-8s used on the Armidale - Sydney route are reaching their use by date and will be replaced by 70 seater Q400 planes. When that happens, CASA regulations based on the weight of the aircraft will require full passenger security screening for those affected flights. Space will be created in the upgrade to allow for the necessary screening equipment, which will be installed when required.

In August, Fly Corporate will introduce a daily service to Brisbane and with flights priced around $149 each way, it is expected to attract many more passengers from the local region.

This will be a daily service scheduled to enable a day’s business in Brisbane, with an early departure from Armidale and an early evening return the same day.

“There have been many attempts to establish a viable service between Armidale and Brisbane over the years,” Mr Wilcox said. “Armidale Dumaresq Councillors and council officers made a huge effort to attract this service, and it is a tribute to them and their hard work. Early

indications are that this new service will be very successful.”

He says it was these factors combined that persuaded the State Government to contribute $7.8 M towards the project, which will benefit not only Armidale, but airport users across the region.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of the NSW Government, our local MP Adam Marshall and the Minister for Regional Development John Barilaro, who backed the project.

“We are building an impressive regional hub, and the plan has been developed in detailed consultation with councils, operators and organisations throughout our area,” he said.

“This new airport terminal is a council/ community driven initiative and will be a most impressive gateway to our region and our gateway to the world.”

How will it look?

The upgrade will wrap around the existing building, with the extended areas designed to match its original features. It will include a series of simple open gable vaulted roof forms echoing the shearing shed architecture which inspired the 1990s building. The building faces north and south, with allowances for further expansion to the east and west as may be

The north side, which incorporates the lounge, will be double glazed with open views onto the apron. A large north facing roof has overhangs to provide natural light and will also accommodate solar panels. The southern side of the terminal will have increased glazed windows to provide indirect light for most of the day.

One of the great attractions of the building is its design philosophy, which echoes the natural beauty of the New England High Country. This is reflected in the simple pavilion extensions of the building, with roofs suggesting the rugged, irregular forms of the gorge country.

The public areas have been designed with a raked ceiling, and the construction materials will be from durable, low maintenance materials and harmonious to the region.

Included in the airport plan is a doubling of the car park area to accommodate longer stay vehicles, with some time limits on parks close to the terminal to speed up arrivals and departures.

Construction has been planned in three stages • An extension to the west includes a new check-in hall, freight, baggage handling, airline offices and staff amenities.

• New departure and arrivals areas, with capability for security screening, baggage reclaim, new amenities, food and beverage spaces.

• The current three bay parking apron will be extended to accommodate four aircraft, making provision for larger planes when they are introduced.

When is an airport not just an airport?

The answer is that the new airport terminal will be at the centre of ongoing development

in the surrounding area.

“It’s not just for the comfort and convenience of passengers,” Mr Wilcox says.

“It will generate jobs and new services, boost tourism, increase freight services and attract new businesses and opportunities for existing businesses to expand.

“The flow on effects from creating a transport hub like this will benefit our whole region.”

Plans for the near future include a roundabout to be built on the New England Highway to provide access to new industrial lots, which are currently being developed with water, sewerage and NBN facilities. There has been a demand for some time for new sites to meet the current industrial land shortage.

Upgrading the terminal is just the start of some really positive plans for Armidale and the region.

On Friday 20 May, Rex celebrated its second birthday flying to Armidale, NSW. To note this important event, Rex held a breakfast at Armidale Regional Airport, where guests were provided with coffee and a light snack in addition to a slice of birthday cake.

Tell us about your bases here in Armidale?

NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE Superintendent Steve Mepham, Zone Manager to the New England region for the NSW RURAL FIRE SERVICE, tells FOCUS readers about the service’s very important role in the New England. hat is RFS, and what is its role in the New England?

The New England Zone of the NSW Rural Fire Service is responsible for the suppression and prevention of wildfire in the communities of Armidale, Guyra, Uralla and Walcha. We are also responsible to attend structure fires and motor vehicle accidents outside the built up areas.

New England Zone also works very closely with other agencies, such as Councils, Fire & Rescue NSW, Police, SES, Forests, National Parks and Wildlife, Native Veg Council, Landcare, Local Aboriginal Land Councils etc. We are the overall co-ordinators for all agencies when it comes to bushfire. We sit on a number of committees and contribute to the emergency responses plans of the district and host the co-ordinated agencies

A major part of our capability for fire fighting operations is our ability to fight fires with fixed wing bombers and helicopters. We have recently finished building a new building at the Armidale Airport to support our aircraft. This consists of a storage area, communications room, operations managers office and crew room to be utilised when we need to be on standby or go operational. The new facility cost around $800,000 to construct and replaced a temporary setup that was essentially converted shipping containers.

We hold 60,000 litres of fire retardant on site ready to use and maintain stocks of fire fighting foam. This new facility is just the first phase of the new development at the Armidale Airport, and we are currently working on plans to build a new $4 million state of the art Fire Control Centre alongside the airbase. It makes a lot of operational sense for us to co-locate the two operations and will be a welcome upgrade to our current operations centre.

Communications Brigade, RAFT (remote area fire team) Aviation Brigade, Catering Brigade, Chainsaw Brigade, Logistics Brigade and Community Engagement Brigade.

How can the public help the RFS? We are always looking for new recruits, ladies, gents, young or old, time poor, whatever; as can be seen from the diverse list above, not everyone jumps on a truck. We have a wide variety of jobs and functions to be done, and we can literally find something for everyone to do - and not just when we have fires. We have volunteers out and about nearly every day of the week looking after our fleet of 112 vehicles, answering phones, delivering supplies to stations, training volunteers.

Tell us about your team ...

People often ask me, “What do you do when there are no fires?” ... Well to be honest, we are so busy between fires that we really don’t have the time to tell you about what we do. We are a very large volunteer organisation, and we can do with all the help we can get.

Armidale Regional Airport

ARMIDALE REGIONAL COUNCIL PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE Three important plans for the Armidale region are now on public exhibition to allow for community consultation on the future strategies and plans of Armidale Regional Council. t the Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday 15 June 2016, Council approved for Public Exhibition the Mall Vibrancy Plan, Dumaresq Dam Upgrade Plan and the Airport Upgrade Plan.

The Master Plan process seeks to identify key initiatives that will inform Council’s Strategic Plans and direct resources over the next 20 years, to ensure Council meets community expectation. The Master Plans cover a number of areas, including transportation, parks and gardens, recreation, the arts, CBDs, towns and villages. The Mall Vibrancy Plan includes a broad range of infrastructure upgrades, planned events, communication programmes and business activities to grow and foster increased vibrancy and traffic through the Beardy Street Mall.

The Airport Upgrade Plan is a comprehensive document that addresses the planned upgrade of

the airport terminal, apron, runway and vehicle parking. The plan also details several development proposals to provide for business and office accommodation, commercial development, a highway service centre and provision for aviation related businesses - the latter with direct taxiway access to the runway.

The essence of the Dumaresq Dam Plan is to create a parkland facility with a restoration of camping, jogging, picnic and walking trails, a mountain bike track and a range of water activities. The plan also proposes holiday cabin accommodation and a café serving visitors to an environmentally sustainable nature park. Armidale Regional Council Administrator Dr Ian Tiley said the first of the Master Plans to go out to the community on consultation include major infrastructure and marketing initiatives that will help drive growth and deliver economic stimulus.

“Each of these plans identifies major

initiatives for our region,” said Dr Tiley. “We have just had a major funding announcement for the upgrade of the Armidale Airport terminal, and next year’s budget has allocated $170k towards the upgrade of the Dumaresq Dam recreation area, and there are plans underway for an enhanced Christmas festival in the Armidale mall - all initiatives identified through the Master Plan process.

“I encourage people to view the Master Plans and provide feedback on one or all of the plans on public exhibition. We want to hear from as many community members as possible.”

Courage, strength, determination: three words which have led Paratriahlete Katie Kelly on the ride of her life.

Being born with a genetic condition which impairs vision and hearing, she has not let anything stand in the way of achieving her goals. This September she heads to Rio to compete at the 2016 Paralympics. This is her story … ou were born with a condition known as “Usher Syndrome.” For those who aren’t familiar, can you please shed some light on this condition?

Usher Syndrome is a Deaf Blind genetic condition and is inherited in an “autosomal recessive” manner. The vision is an eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP).

There are three types of Usher Syndrome. If a child is born with Type 1, they are profoundly deaf at birth and have a dysfunctional vestibular system, meaning their balance and their ability to sit up and walk is affected. They develop vision loss from early to mid childhood.

Those with Type 2 will generally have moderate to severe hearing loss from birth and vision loss starts in the late teens or early twenties.

Type 3 is most common in children from Finland. They are born with normal hearing and balance, but they experience significant loss by their teens and then their eyesight starts to go.

I’m sitting on Type 2.

From birth I’ve had moderate hearing loss which has slowly worsened, but thanks to hearing technology I can hear reasonably well.

I've worn hearing aids since I was five years old. I spent many years with speech therapy.

For years I struggled to say “Solicitor”, which is the profession of my father, Gerard. So I started saying “Lawyer”, as that was much easier to pronounce. The cause of my hearing loss was never known.

I am now looking at now getting a cochlear implant, as my hearing has worsened and the technology of cochlear is incredibly advanced compared to hearing aids.

Then my childhood girlfriend, Joanna, and I decided to celebrate our 30th by doing the 2005 New York Marathon. It was a good excuse to go to New York!

If you are ever going to do a marathon - I tell everyone to do New York! It is an incredible atmosphere, with over one million spectators across the course.

Some time later, I was living in Newcastle and I joined a triathlon training squad, “TriNova MultiSport”. Suddenly I found myself surrounded by all these people training for Ironmans. It wasn't long before I spoke to the Coach about training for an Ironman. We set a goal to do the Port Macquarie Ironman in May 2013. My running coach, Ben Higginbottom, guided me through the Ironman marathon run, as it was getting dark by the time I started the run. That was the first time I needed a guide for a race, as I've always managed otherwise.

Due to your deteriorating eye sight, you’ve made the transition from mainstream competition to Paratriathlons, which has excitedly led you to compete at Rio this year. What event/s you’ll be competing in?

I didn’t know there was “Paratriathlon” until I contacted Triathlon Australia. I rang them in January 2015 to see if there was a way I could do Hawaii Ironman as a vision impaired athlete. They then told me about Paratriathlon.

It just went from that call. To think some 18 months later I am now heading towards the Rio Paralympics! It’s quite amazing. I can’t believe that’s where I’m now at.

I’m training and putting everything into getting myself to that start line at Copabana beach in the PT5 division.

The race is 750 m swim, 20 km ride and 5 km run. PT5 do their race with a guide.

The other part of all of this - is that I so happen to have Michellie Jones as my guide.

She won the silver medal in triathlon at the 2000 Sydney Olympics; she was the first Australian woman to win the Hawaii Ironman in 2006, and she is an Australian Sports and International Triathlon Union Hall of Fame athlete. We met four nights before our first race in Yokohama last year. We roomed together and just clicked. We won that race, and a few months later we went on to win our next race in Iseo, Italy. We had then qualified for the World Championships, and we raced and won that race last year in Chicago.

How have you prepared yourself both physically and mentally for the event?

Preparation is a continual work in progress.

You have to manage many aspects, from trying to push and reach a peak level in your fitness and keeping the body fit. My biggest challenge has been a couple of injuries I haven’t had previously. I’ve had tremendous support from the AIS. Between now and Rio, it’s very much building and a lot of hard work every day. I will usually train twice day, and it’ll be either a morning session of swim or ride, and afternoon a run or strength and conditioning work.

What have been some of the biggest highlights of your career to date?

It would have to be winning the World Championships in Chicago. I just couldn’t have imagined myself in that position.

To not only qualify for the World Championships, to then get to that start line, to finish and to win! And to do this with Michellie Jones - seriously!

I carried an Achilles tendonitis injury into that race and spent three weeks prior to the Championships doing water running.

What I loved about that result, was the reaction of everyone back home, here in the New England, Newcastle and all over. I heard my friends, family, cousins had stayed up to watch the twitter feeds and snippets of the live feed.

The bike? A work in progress. I didn’t own a road bike until I purchased a second hand bike in 2011. Before that, I’d never done any riding.

Swimming I do love. I just love the feeling you get after you’ve done a few km in the pool.

One of the greatest swims I had was at The Armidale School (TAS) with my dad and it was snowing outside - I love that!

Describe the feeling when you cross the finish line ...

The thing that drives me, is you don’t want to have any feelings of regret. You want to

finish and know you’ve absolutely given it your all. That’s always easier said than done in the moment of a race.

So when I finish - I love it when I feel exhausted and have a big sense of relief. If I have those emotions, then I know I’ve achieved what we set out to do.

As a Paratriathlete you require a guide to be with you at all times; you also require a backup guide in the instance that your guide is unable to be with you on the day.

To do this, you need to raise funds - how can we help?

That’s the challenge of vision impaired athletes; we also need to fund our guide, to cover their training, time away from work and travel. Michellie has given up much of her own time to help me. Unlike other competitors though, we’ve never had the luxury of a backup guide, and that’s come down to the cost.

We have managed and are doing very well, but for Rio we are trying to raise some additional funds for my back up guide, Jen Davis, to come to Rio. Jen works full-time in Canberra, and again will need to take leave and so on. To put it in perspective, the Great Britain team have something like three times our team’s budget and always have at least one - two guides for their PT5 paratriathletes. It’s typical of us Aussies; we always just push that little more to get our results.

Chantelle's passion for supporting people with disabilities and their families originated from being inspired by her younger sister, who has an intellectual disability. As a result of this firsthand experience, Chantelle understands how important it is for people with disabilities to have goals and dreams, and be able to live a good life on their own terms.

VISITING CAPE TOWN WELL, I’M NOW BACK AT WORK AFTER MY BRIEF SOJOURN TO SOUTH AFRICA, BUT I WILL CONTINUE ON FROM LAST MONTH’S COLUMN AND TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE REST OF MY TRIP.

A

fter a couple of days in beautiful Cape Town, I travelled by train to Pretoria. There are two train trips you can take between these two cities - the one night/two day Blue Train and the one I took, which was the two night/three day Rovos Rail described as “the most luxurious rail journey in the world”. Now, since I’ve only been on one or two train trips in my time, I’m not sure if that’s the case, but I do know it was like a step back in time, from the moment you arrived at the train station and walked the red carpet to the exclusive waiting lounge, which sets the tone for the entire journey, to the actual train itself filled with old world charm - massive, solid, dark red leather lounges like the ones your grandparents might have had in the Club Cars, curtains tied back with their tassels, to high tea served with cucumber sandwiches, all blended with fine food, wine and exceptional service throughout.

As I said, we travelled from Cape Town to Pretoria, and I was told that the scenery at the beginning of the trip was more spectacular as we passed through the mountains, so I spent a bit of time on the first day in the observation car at the end of the train - that is when I wasn’t partaking in exceptional meals served at the other end of the train in the dining car! The meals included prawns, scallops, lobster and braised ostrich - all washed down with some lovely South African wines.

We had two stops enroute, the first being at a place called Matjiesfontein, where we were able to take a tour of the town on an old red London double-decker bus - which really consisted of a ride up the one and only road and then a quick U-turn and a ride back down the other side of the road! A rather strange and bizarre whistle stop, but still memorable!

The second stop was at Kimberley to view the “Big Hole” - which is … a big hole, and that’s about it. The highlight of this visit was when we

actually left Kimberley just as the sun was setting and passed by a lake with over 20,000 flamingos - a good time to get your binoculars out.

After overnighting in Pretoria, we then drove to Kruger National Park via the Panorama route, which was exactly that - panoramic - with stops so see the three Rondavels (covered in mist when we first got there, but slowly the cloud lifted briefly so we could see them), God’s Window, the Blyde River Canyon (the third largest canyon in the world) and the Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls and Mac Mac Falls. When the clouds lifted, the views were spectacular.

We arrived at Sabi Sands Game Reserve on the edge of Kruger National Park (where we were staying at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge - I’m telling you, we did it rough!) - in time for our first opentopped game drive. As well as the camps within Kruger itself, there are a number of private game reserves round the edge of Kruger which are all open to Kruger with no fences between them, and all offer fantastic game drive opportunities and luxury lodge and tented accommodation options.

The best part about staying at one of these reserves is that you get the chance to go “offroad” in pursuit of the Big Five, something you can’t do within the Park itself. On our first evening safari drive, we were lucky enough to sight all of the Big Five - elephant, rhino, water buffalo, lion and the elusive leopard. For the next couple of days we spent three hours each morning before breakfast and each afternoon/ evening driving around viewing the wildlife in the most spectacular setting. No matter how many times you see an elephant or how long you follow a lion as it roams through the bush - you don’t get tired of it. And, when you get home and have to sort through your 900 photos - you STILL don’t get tired of it!

In September last year, Robert Heather started as the new Director of the New England Regional Art Museum. Now ten months later, we catch up with him to discuss what has been happening over at NERAM …

hat has the past ten months been like?

Since starting at NERAM, there has just been so much that needs to be done, that sometimes it feels like I have been running on the spot. But looking at what we have done over the past ten months, there have been many achievements - cleaning up the building, attracting new visitors and working closely with the team at Studio 52 café, as well as lots of exhibitions and events. There will also be lots more to look forward to in the near future.

So what can we look forward to?

We are looking at how we can improve our gallery spaces and make ourselves more sustainable. NERAM was originally built in the 1980s when people weren’t very aware of energy efficiency issues; if we are to become a sustainable organisation, we need to address them now, and we have developed an action plan to sort them out.

We are installing new energy efficient LED lights in gallery spaces, which will save money and make our exhibitions look better as well as help preserve the artworks on display. We are installing new solar power panels on our roof to reduce our electricity bills. People don’t realise it, but running an art museum uses a lot of power, with 24 hour climate control, lots of lights and other electrical equipment.

If the temperature in the gallery or art store fluctuates too much, it can damage the artworks. The exciting thing has been the high level of community support we have received; 38 new england focus.

at present we are running our 2016 Annual Appeal and every day we are getting donations towards the installation of solar panels.

What about artistically?

We have some great exhibitions to look forward to, starting with the always popular UNESAP exhibition of works by school students in July, then a unique view of the 1970s and ‘80s by Australian photographer Rennie Ellis in August and followed by the 2016 Packsaddle exhibition, which is always a major event.

There will also be some great exhibitions drawn from the Howard Hinton Collection and other NERAM collections, as well as opportunities to discover the work of local artists.

What have been some of the challenges?

We had a couple of our staff leave at the beginning of this year, and that left a huge gap in our team. But it was also an opportunity to look at what we do and whether we could do it better. We felt that we needed to concentrate more upon resourcing our curatorial team with a full-time position who can research exhibitions and work closely with artists. Following an extensive restructure process working with the board and in consultation with our staff, we advertised and recruited some exciting new people who will be joining the team here. The down side is that the process has taken quite some time, and we have all had to work hard to fill the gaps.

The other challenge has been to try and get out of the building to meet people. In order to succeed, NERAM needs to be actively engaged with the wider community, and the day to day operations can be so all consuming that it is hard to get away from my desk. Over the next

few months I want to visit more artists in their studios and meet people from the other communities across New England. One of my goals is to send some small scale exhibitions across the region to galleries in places like Inverell, Glen Innes and Walcha, so that NERAM lives up the its regional brief.

What have been some of the highlights?

There have been a lot. The main thing that has struck me has been the level of enthusiasm and support which NERAM receives from the wider community. We held a function with some long-term supporters and talked to them about the need to replace our existing light fittings with LED lights, and everyone wrote a cheque to support the project on the night.

There is the wonderful work of the Friends of NERAM running fabulous events like the recent NERAMble open garden weekend, which was great fun for the 400 people who attended. They have also been working with the Armidale Tree Group to reclaim Black Gully Creek. There is also the great work which our volunteers do on a daily basis to help us keep the place running. We have volunteers who have been helping out since the gallery started in 1983, who still turn up and lend a hand every week.

There was also the artist residency at the Museum of Printing by Canberra artist Caren Florance, who stayed for a week in April and held some great talks and letterpress printing workshops. These were so popular, that they inspired group of volunteers who now come

in every week to work down in the Museum of Printing.

What about personally?

One of the highlights was the opportunity to address the Arts faculty graduation ceremony at the University of New England. It was great to be part of this celebration, and I hope that I imparted some wisdom from my time working in the arts to those people graduating after years of study.

Another was recently attending the annual commemorative event at the Myall Creek Massacre Memorial in June. This was a terrible event, where 28 Aboriginal people were killed by white stockmen in 1838, and yet since 2000 the local community have created a commemorative event that is an emotionally powerful reconciliation activity. I think it is something that more people across the region should try to attend.

What do you hope to see over the next ten months?

I would like to see a diverse range of people visiting the art museum and enjoying the exhibitions and activities here. We want to break down any perceived barriers and remind everyone that NERAM is a resource for the whole community, and you are all welcome. Over the next ten months you will see us working with old people, young people and everyone in between to create new opportunities for the New England community. hen and why did Minimbah Preschool and Primary School begin?

Following consultations between the Armidale Aboriginal community and the “Save the Children Fund”, the need for an appropriate education facility for Aboriginal children, the Minimbah Preschool, was founded and began in 1963. In 1970, a preschool was built on the corner of Cooks Road and Long Swamp Road. In 1971, Mrs Dianne Roberts (OAM), became the first Aboriginal Director appointed to Minimbah Preschool. In 1996, Minimbah Primary School was opened on land adjacent to the old preschool.

How has the school evolved over this time?

When the primary school first began, we had ten students enrolled from Kindergarten to Year two and one classroom. We now have four classrooms and 70 students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 6. The preschool has 65

children enrolled. The parents and children that are connected to Minimbah have strong beliefs and values. Learning about their origins has enabled the students to become aware of the spiritual links with the land and their traditions.

Minimbah provides a holistic approach to education, one that not only considers the social issues surrounding the child, but also the individual’s learning needs. We have implemented the 8 Ways of Aboriginal Learning pedagogy across the whole school.

“8 Ways” is a pedagogy framework that allows teachers to include Aboriginal perspectives by using Aboriginal learning techniques. In this way, focus can remain on curriculum content while embedding Aboriginal perspectives in every lesson.

Tell us about the students’ achievements.

Many of the students who have been at Minimbah have gone on to finish Year 12 and then to study at university. The Armidale School has offered scholarships to some of our boys. This has been wonderful for both schools, and the students who have taken up these scholarships have been very successful.

Our students regularly perform at community events such as A Day in The Dale, NAIDOC Week events, conferences and for visiting dignitaries such as the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

Tell us about your team ...

We are lucky to have a very dedicated staff at Minimbah. We are proud to say that more than 50% of our employees are Aboriginal.

It’s wonderful for our students to have these role models at their school. The primary school currently has three full-time and one part-time teacher and a non-teaching Principal. Each classroom has an Aboriginal Education Officer working full-time with the students. This is a great advantage for the students, as they have the opportunity for one to one support when it is needed.

The preschool has a Director, two Early Childhood teachers, four support workers and an Intervention Teacher to support students with disabilities.

What are the benefits of being a student at Minimbah?

are: Belonging, Identity, Knowing, Kindness and Confidence. A Minimbah student who Belongs has a strong sense of Identity, a deep Knowing of how to operate successfully in two worlds, Kindness that supports others and has Confidence in themselves and their abilities.

here are you originally from, and what first prompted you to join the Australian Air Force

Cadets?

I was born in Narrandera! However, I grew up in the UK until the age of 15, at which point my family moved to Tamworth. I recall in my first few weeks I found a small classified advert in the local newspaper, that Tamworth’s Squadron was recruiting for new members.

I decided to go along to the information night and ended up joining - it seemed like an organisation that offered a lot of different opportunities, and coming from a family with a lot of military history, I was definitely interested in delving into that side of things too.

I enjoyed my time as a Cadet very much, and that is what prompted me to return as a staff member several years later. I wanted to be a part of the organisation and give something back.

As T/Commanding Officer of 337 Squadron, what is your role in Armidale?

I am currently standing in as the Commanding Officer of 337 Squadron Armidale. The role of the Commanding Officer is basically to manage the Unit staff and Cadets, ensuring that all training and activities comply with the relevant policies and procedures and are in line with the aims of the organisation, and we report to a chain of command which includes AAFC and Royal Australian Air Force personnel to ensure this happens. If you are interested in a career in the Defence Force, or in flying, there really is no better organisation. The RAAF invests a lot of time and money into the AAFC, and taking full advantage of what the organisation has to offer really sets the Cadets apart from other people when they go through the application process. Apart from that, involvement in the AAFC can really assist them in all areas of their lives - there aren’t that many organisations young people can be involved in, which allow them to develop their leadership skills, confidence and self-discipline and self-reliance, while in a fun and safe environment. There are many opportunities available to them, and it is really up to them how much they get involved in and how far they take it.

Are there any special requirements to join?

Potential Cadets must be aged between 13 - 18 years and be an Australian resident. They complete an application form and a medical examination, and must have parent/guardian consent - there are no other requirements, other than an interest in aviation, the Air Force or being a part of a challenging and exciting organisation.

This is an excellent question, and one that requires much thought and research. It can be one of the most significant decisions a parent makes for their child. Parents are the first and most important educators of their children, and therefore need to feel comfortable that they can work with and feel supported by the school they entrust their child to.

Parents need to keep in mind the various needs of their child. Facilities, opportunities for career paths, enrichment, sport, and the creative and performing arts, along with the espoused values of a school, are all important aspects which should be considered.

I would advise parents to have a full and frank discussion with their child before they make the final decision and to carry out as much research as possible.

What makes O’Connor stand out?

I would say that everything at O’Connor makes us stand out as a great option for secondary education. From our pursuit of excellence in

all spheres of school life, to our breadth of curriculum and facilities, and the extremely wide variety of extra-curricular activities … I could go on forever.

However, our greatest asset is our current students, their families and our staff. They are the ones who make the O’Connor community such a wonderful and vibrant environment.

O’Connor is the only Catholic High School in and around Armidale. What is high on the agenda for 2016/2017?

In Term 3 of this year, O’Connor will be staging its first musical for many years. Talent from a small number of ex-students and affiliates will

work with current students in presenting Annie the Musical under the direction of our very own Melissa Killen. The music, with a combination of O’Connor students and community members, will be directed by our Music Teacher, Melita Roache.

The Archive Room The Archive Room was updated during the last development of the College in 2012, which saw the expansion of our Construction and Hospitality Vocational Education and Training facilities. The Archive Room contains memorabilia from St Ursula’s, De La Salle and O’Connor Colleges, and provides a wonderful legacy for current students and those of the future.

O’Connor came into being when St Ursula’s

and De La Salle merged to form O’Connor Catholic College in 1975. The establishment of the Archive Room and the collection of the vast majority of the items was carried out by local De La Salle Old Boy, Mr Carl Graham. We are very thankful that Carl had the foresight to begin rescuing these items when De La Salle closed, and retain them until they could be professionally catalogued and displayed.

Currently the Archive Room is under the watch of Support Teacher and former student, Mr Anthony Kelly, who is carrying on the good work started by Carl.

Foster Carers play a vital role in the lives of children and young people. By providing a stable home, Foster Carers can set these children and young people on a path to a safe and positive future. Foster Carers support these children and young people in care to meet their full potential by providing them with stability and support.

Being a Foster Carer is challenging, but a very rewarding experience. Our team offers training, assistance and support throughout the whole process and can be called upon anytime.

Pathfinders offer a very personable and confidential approach.

For the initial step to becoming a Foster Carer, Kylie will come and meet with you, to discuss your family, working and lifestyle circumstances. Feeling comfortable and knowing you are supported assists in the further process of becoming a carer.

ancer Council NSW nutrition program Eat It To Beat It is providing free sessions and workshops for New England parents, through schools and community organisations.

Developed by a team of dietitians, the sessions and workshops help the region’s families understand how eating two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day can cut cancer risk, with ideas and inspiration to get the whole family eating more.

How to pack a healthy lunch box, menu planning, recipes, tips for saving time and money, and clever ways to entice fussy eaters are covered.

“Evidence tells us that diet is linked to cancer and that eating more fruit and vegetables can help reduce your cancer risk,” Nutrition Project Officer Juanita Nantes said.

Worryingly in Hunter New England, 87 per cent of adults don’t eat enough vegetables, while 46 per cent don’t eat enough fruit,

Ms Nantes said Eat It To Beat It was working in New England to help turn this around.

“Even making simple changes, such as adding an extra piece of veg to the dinner plate, and building from there, is effective and helps set healthy habits for life,” she said.

Savings on the household budget were another benefit.

“People often think that fruit and vegetables are expensive, but if you compare the cost of fruit and vegetables to other foods such as meat or pre-packaged snacks, they can actually be cheaper,” Ms Nantes said.

Kentucky Public School Kentucky Public School was established in 1868 and has always maintained strong community ties and a high profile in the local

area. The school enjoys spacious grounds and has been recognised as a regional leader in Environmental Education, which remains an important school focus with significant recycling and energy reduction schemes operating.

Kentucky has also established itself as the home of the State Small Schools Marimba Ensemble, building a reputation as a centre of excellence for the performing arts with regular performances at the Sydney Opera House, the Schools Spectacular and local eisteddfods. The school also has ukulele, recorder and steel drum groups.

Three classes currently operate at the school, with excellent pupil teacher ratios and successful support and accelerated learning programmes in place.

The school is a member of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Programme promoting healthy living skills, including food cultivation and preparation.

Physical programmes include a weekly bicycle safety scheme and annual sport and recreation camps.

The school has an excellent resource base with a wide range of quality technological materials available to students, including laptops, tablets and interactive hardware in all classrooms.

Rocky River Public School Rocky River Public School is one of the oldest schools in the New England region and celebrated its sesquicentenary in 2010. It is a small rural school situated 5 km north of Uralla on the Thunderbolt’s Way. We currently have three classes in the school and work within a cluster of small schools in the area for sporting, cultural, social and professional development activities. The local community is very supportive, and all major school activities are very well attended. The school provides comprehensive educational experiences to enhance the academic, cultural, physical and social development of students. What are we doing that is new?

The Thunderbolts are also implementing Targeting Early Numeracy within our schools.

The Targeted Early Numeracy (TEN) intervention programme provides support for early years’ students in Early Arithmetical Strategies.

Future plans will involve our schools coming together to share in lessons through video conferencing, making an interactive virtual alliance classroom for other project based learning opportunities such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

What type of demographic visit the farm?

Actually, one of my favourite things is being introduced to a child at the beginning of a stay who has their head down and focused on their favourite video game, and by the end of their stay they couldn’t even tell you where their gaming device is.

Do you think locals like us take for granted what’s in our own back yard in regards to primary produce?

Yes and no. Yes, because I think we are truly spoilt here in regards to our primary produce.

But just because we are spoilt, doesn’t mean that most people don’t know they are on a good thing by living here. It’s like this area is a wonderful secret, and all us locals are in on it. There is a lot of buzz around local food and produce at the moment - justifiably so - and there are also a lot of amazing and dynamic people starting to really do some incredible things. I would have to say that it is pretty exciting times here in New England.

Plans for the future?

Yes, yes and yes. At the moment my lips are sealed, but think tourism and think local produce, and watch this space!

ell us about yourself and your family ...

My name is Deb O’Brien, and I grew up in the local area. After ten years of travelling Australia, my husband and I realised that “home” was a pretty awesome place and made the decision to move back. I would describe myself as a unique blend of quirky and earthy, and I believe Wayward Jerseys Farmstay reflects that. Wayward Jerseys would not be, without the love and support of my husband, Lauri Pulkkinen. Lauri is the type of man who not only supports his wife to follow her crazy dreams, but also says, “Fine, you want to buy a milking cow … Well, let me build you a dairy”.

We also have three beautiful little girls, ranging in ages from six to eleven, who love their way of life and love sharing it with other people. I have always loved animals and am passionate about the New England area. I truly believe I have the best job in the world!

What prompted the beginning of Wayward Jerseys?

The name “The Home for Wayward Jerseys” (shortened to Wayward Jerseys for convenience) was initially a term that my husband jokingly used to describe my penchant for Jersey cows.

It also alludes to what we see as their unique personalities. Simply, we wanted to share with

A talented musician in his own right, Matthew relocated to Armidale with his equally talented wife, Li Ling, together with children Harriet (aged four, who also attends PLC Armidale), William who is two, and baby three on the way! A passionate music educator, Matthew shares his inspiring and ambitious vision with FOCUS. How are you and your family finding your feet in Armidale and more specifically, your role at PLC Armidale?

I find the culture of learning at PLC Armidale to be extremely impressive. PLC Armidale girls and staff really do demonstrate values such as integrity, compassion, respect, generosity, humility and perseverance. I have found the approach the girls have to their work to be completely inspiring.

They are committed and quietly organised and always strive, without question, to achieve their very best. The opportunities available in music at PLC Armidale are extraordinary. In fact, I am surprised that more girls from around the New England North West Region aren’t enrolling here

I have also been extremely impressed by the Music staff here: Mrs Deidre Rickards continues to run a string programme of the highest calibre, with a focus on exceptional repertoire and quality of performance.

Miss Constance Rolfe is doing an excellent job in both Junior School Music and with several vocal ensembles. Deidre and Constance are both excellent musicians and very inspired in their work. The legacy of PLC Armidale Music is clearly seen in the quality of the Alumni, many of whom have become professional musicians as a result of the opportunities they have had here. In addition, we have a partnership with the New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) that underpins the success of the school music programmes through providing peripatetic tutors of the very highest calibre.

What is your vision for the music programme at PLC Armidale?

Although it has been very rewarding to have had such success in the Eisteddfod, particularly winning the Open Choral Championships and the Junior and Senior Strings ensembles, what

really excites me are the opportunities for the Music Department at the College.

I have been so inspired by the quality of the students here. It really makes me realise just what is possible.

At the moment, I feel there is almost nothing we can’t achieve! The centrepiece of the strategic plan I would like to establish is a strong wind and brass programme, with the view towards creating a symphony orchestra in the future.

We understand that you are a talented musician in your own right and recently received some recognition. Are you able to share that news with us?

I recently achieved international recognition with the award of 2nd Place in the Open International Piano Composition Competition.

As part of this award, I will be touring in Vienna in August, including performing at the World Composers’ Prizewinning Concert in the Erhbar Hall in Vienna on the 3rd of August.

ARMIDALE COURTHOUSE AS FAR AS ARMIDALE’S HISTORIC COURTHOUSE IS CONCERNED, IT’S A CASE OF CARPE DIEM - SEIZE THE DAY.

T

here’s a one-off opportunity right now to secure the future of perhaps the most important and impressive building in Beardy Street.

Reinforcing any future development of a Civic Precinct and immediately bringing life to the Mall, I believe multiple uses by a consortium of local cultural bodies plus representation by the university becomes feasible within a structure negotiated by local State Member, Adam Marshall, in consultation with the local government authority. This could allow financial arrangements without overloading any of the participants, make a statement of Town and Gown strengths within the region and save this central heritage building from demolition by neglect or commercial adaptation.

The building’s many facilities provide multiple opportunities and benefits for participants, with a shared use of the courtroom space and probably a leased café area within the precinct.

UNE has marked its presence in Parramatta by leasing a dignified sandstone building in the main street. In Armidale as far as many visitors (and residents!) are concerned, the university is out of sight/out of mind on a distant hilltop. Sorry, but true. Pride in Armidale as a university city needs some UNE footprint in the middle of town.

Our district needs to capitalise on its growth potential on every front to attract attention and development. I must put my hand up here to say I think we’d be far better putting our money into demonstrating our distinct attractions here ourselves, rather than giving it to schemes such as Evocities.

Beef is “buoyant” at the moment, our wool always does well in the fine wool market, fat lambs such as the Milly Hill brand are celebrated in Good Food reviews by critics like Terry Durack, the Guyra tomato farm claims to be the largest glasshouse tomato operation in the Southern Hemisphere and UNE’s Smart Farm is attracting growing international attention. The whole district has so many strands deserving more attention as a distinct quality package with a marvellous lifestyle and 21st Century opportunities.

to work together and make our very individual, particular mark.

It was good to see two local women launching Moz & Duzzy, a new fashion business designing and making in Australia with Merino wool and organic cotton. A parade at NERAM was opened by Jock Laurie, a Director of Australian Wool Innovation Ltd., with remarks by Charles Coventry, local woolgrower in partnership with the Italian brand, Zegna. Michelle Bookallil and Tracy Wright put on a most professional show to a packed audience.

(Admission: I was a model and it was all great fun, and I did buy something).

I was sorry that day though, to miss an “Aboriginal Women’s Mother’s Day Event” put on by the Dawgaway Womens’ Healing Group and Murawin. I’ve apologised to Hazel Vale for not being able to visit, but with beauty therapies, cultural dance and music, story telling and painting, it sounded great. Which reminds me; it’s good to see a community push to finish the Aboriginal Cultural Centre. It sounds a good idea to use supervised TAFE students to complete it.

Unavoidably away, I was sorry to miss Terry Cooke’s photographic exhibition opening at the Armidale Art Gallery. Terry has a way through his art and skill of adding a memorable and magical dimension to his work.

On my return, I added a ribbon to the Loud Fence outside the Armidale Folk Museum. It’s only by facing the good and the bad things in our society that we make it stronger and better. Child abuse cannot be tolerated.

The Rugby season is certainly off and running literally. Town’s been packed. [Latest sports’ overall estimates this year are now $10,107,925!]. I’ve had visitors from Queensland, South Australia, Bourke, Dubbo and Sydney, all adding to tourism estimates.

And Miss Catherine MacLean’s donation of heritage roses from her important collection through the Garden History Society and its wonderful volunteers has won the National Trust Conservation Collection Award! Do visit the new Heritage Rose Garden at Saumarez.

Forestry Corporation of NSW is proud to have maintained close links to community clubs over many years, through agreements to use areas of State Forests for different recreation purposes.

From archery to mountain bike riding, pony clubs to scouting activities, Forestry Corp has partnered with many dedicated community members, who work tirelessly to maintain their State Forest club sites as a safe and fun place to be. The regular events at local and state levels often draw visitors from other parts of the region and as far as interstate, contributing significant amounts to the local visitor economy.

One such group is the Kempsey Sporting Car Club, this year celebrating their 60th anniversary. This passionate and committed car club manage a hill climb course at Mt. Cooperabung in Ballengarra State Forest, south of Kempsey, and have done so for 20 years. The passion and commitment of the club members has seen this site grow into

The club has shown utmost professionalism in terms of safety and the standards in managing their State Forest area. Their site has been the playground for motor sport racing enthusiasts from around the state and the country, timing themselves on the CAMS [confederation of Australian motorsport] sanctioned track in vintage and modern day vehicles.

Forestry Corporation is also celebrating a special anniversary in 2016. It is 100 years since the Forestry Commission was formed under the Forestry Act in 1916; a year to celebrate and look forward to many more years of partnerships in our community.

Were you aware the New England and Oxley Wild Rivers National Parks, only a short drive from Armidale, are World Heritage sites? Other World Heritage Listed sites found in Australia include Kakadu National Park, Great Barrier Reef and the Blue Mountains, and yet our own World Heritage area still remains largely a secret (hopefully not for much longer).

From Point Lookout you can gaze out in all directions across unspoilt wilderness and the Bellinger Valley all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

It is a truly magnificent view that visitors travel to our region to experience. One of the most magical adventures (for children and adults) is to walk through the ancient Antarctic Beech forests to Weeping Rock. This is one of very few places in the world where you can experience what the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana may have looked like. On the way home, drop into the Dutton Trout Hatchery, where you can hand feed trout, see leaping fish, and take a self guided tour. The Trout Hatchery is open daily from 8:30am - 3:30pm and is located on Point Lookout Road.

hen did ARS start operations?

ARS started contracting to the then Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra Councils 10 years ago, undertaking both the kerbside collection and the processing of recyclables at the Material Recovery Facilities. ARS has lifted the recycling rate in Armidale and then Guyra to approx. 4,000 tones, with a

96 per cent capture rate and only four per cent of waste going to landfill.

Tell us about your team ...

ARS employs 17 local staff and has five trucks for kerbside recycling and management of the Material Recovery Facilities operating seven days a week, compared to seven staff and two trucks when it first started operations.

We would like to acknowledge and congratulate the following staff members,

who have achieved 10 years’ service with us.

Teremoana Marsters - Mona is our Leading Hand, and he is an integral part of the running of the MRF. He oversees the day to day operations of the MRF and works closely with myself. We were overjoyed this year for Mona and his wife, Sandra, after the safe arrival of twin girls, and we had the pleasure of attending their Baptism recently.

Pat comes from a well-known local family. We would like to congratulate Pat and Cassie on the recent purchase of their dream home for their lovely family.

Peter Beresford - Pete is our most experienced kerbside truck driver. He has a wealth of knowledge of all the kerbside runs in Armidale and Guyra. He covers any position in our organisation whilst staff are on leave.

We provide training programmes to our staff, who will receive Certificate III in Waste Management and a greater understanding of the waste industry, Occupational Health & Safety, processing and the impact of recycling on the environment.

Which local businesses do you work closely with?

ARS contracts many local businesses for its day to day operations. This includes three

local transport companies, T & T Transport, Snell’s Transport and Tibb’s of Guyra.

Recycled materials are sent to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Newcastle and overseas to specialist operators.

Tom Faint of T & T Transport has been transporting our cardboard to Orora in Sydney for the last 10 years and provides us with a great reliable service. Tom is a great Aussie bloke who supports the best team in the NRL! (Nat made me write that!) Thanks Tom, for your support and service over the last 10 years. We really appreciate it.

John Snell of Snell’s Transport started transporting our products approximately two years ago. John transports our plastics to Impact Recycling in Sydney, our aluminium cans to Brisbane and our cardboard to Orora and Visy in Sydney. John runs a very efficient and reliable service and is always accommodating. He is well known in the local community, and we congratulate him on starting his own transport business.

Scott Tibbs of SA & RA Tibbs, Guyra, transports our glass on a regular basis to Brisbane Cullet in Brisbane.

Scott has been with us for the past 10 years, and we would like to thank them for their reliable and friendly service.

As ARS own a small fleet of vehicles that carry out a high volume of work on a daily basis, this requires major preventative maintenance to be carried out on all our vehicles and machinery. How has the kerbside crate system helped the

quality of recycling?

Under the ARS contract, which commenced in 2012, residents have been allowed to put out on the kerbside an unlimited number of crates on a weekly basis. The community has responded strongly, with more and more residents boosting their recycling and reducing landfill.

The former Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra Councils took the tough decision many years ago to go with the crate system, despite some protests from the big multinational operators.

The community participation that has led to the massive reduction in landfill continues to succeed and grow and has proven the crate system was the correct decision.

Another reason for the success of the recycling operation is the individual crates allowing separation of the products at the source by the residents, ensuring the quality of the recyclables will remain intact and desirable to the market.

The recent proposed changes to bring in a container deposit system are welcome news, and the previous tough decision to use the crate system has positioned ARS and Armidale Regional Council very well for this change.

We look forward to continuing to provide quality services to the areas within the Armidale Regional Council (ARC).

The second is for all other recyclable material, including plastic bottles, empty steel cans, aluminium cans, aerosols, glass bottles and jars and milk and juice cartons.

Plastic shopping bags and plastic film have been a major problem to the landfill and in turn, the environment.

People can recycle their household plastic shopping bags by placing all the empty bags into one main plastic bag. The main bag is then tied off and placed in the crate with the bottles and cans ready for collection.

ARS would like to thank the Councils for their leadership, supportive local businesses and the community for their strong support and participation over the last 10 years, and we look forward to that support continuing over the next 10 years as we embrace many new changes and challenges in supporting the environment we live in and our communities.

The recycling industry is going from strength to strength, which is evident by the excellent results Armidale Recycling Services (ARS) are achieving year on year. To think that ARS expect to recover 4,000 T of recyclables this financial year is truly an excellent result, and would not have happened without the commitment residents put into separating recyclable material using our crate based recycling system.

Many other local governments are looking at how Armidale Regional Council partners with its residents, and continues to produce some of the cleanest and most valuable recycling in Australia.

This in turn helps Council keep waste charges as low as possible.

With the NSW State Government’s pending Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) referred to by some as “cash for containers” like that which has been running in South Australia for many years, very soon there will be more incentive for our communities to recycle even more. Exciting times are ahead for the NSW recycling industry.
