Primary Maths Competition Adds Up in KL By Gemma Silk, Extended Primary Leadership Team: Learning and Teaching, The Alice Smith School (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
The FOBISIA Primary Maths Competition was hosted by The Alice Smith School from 16-18 March, 2017. On Thursday 16 March, 32 schools, totalling 190 people, from across Asia arrived in Kuala Lumpur very excited for the Primary FOBISIA Maths Competition to begin. The competition was launched with an opening dinner where the host, The Alice Smith School, welcomed all the teams to the city and where the students were presented with their competition t-shirt, cap, water bottle and bag. On Friday morning, the students were very excited and eager for the competition to begin. They started with a fun morning at KLCC Park completing the maths trail. Students then returned to school where they had lunch and completed the written team challenge. The afternoon consisted of team challenges. On Friday evening, the teams went out for dinner at Megamall to celebrate a successful day and the teams enjoyed socialising with eachother while ten pin bowling.

The challenge was to make a rollercoaster as high and as long as possible with the resources they were given and they had the opportunity to trade points for additional resources. Finally, it was time for the awards ceremony to close the competition and then the celebration with a tasty BBQ and a party! All students worked together fantastically and were a pleasure to be with throughout the weekend of competitions. They represented their schools well and showed what amazing mathematicians they were. We now look forward to the 2018 competition in Brunei!
