CHAMBER

A note from the President

Greetings,

I hope you are all enjoying the last few weeks of summer. As we enter our new fiscal year, I want to take a moment to thank you all for the integral role you’ve played in driving tremendous success and achievement within our community. Every major step forward we take as an organization, community and region, is made possible by you - our dedicated members who invest time, talent and resources into building a better tomorrow for Fargo Moorhead West Fargo and beyond. I am beyond excited to share with you all of the things we have been up to lately in the community, but especially the big goals and plans we have for the future.

To start, I am overjoyed to share that in August, our Chamber Foundation was awarded a $9.62 million Good Jobs Challenge Grant from the Economic Development Administration. Together with several community organizations, we will be bolstering our region’s economy by training and developing a skilled workforce in the industries of precision agriculture, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity/IT. This overall initiative is called the Ignite Initiative Regional Workforce Training System (IIRWTS), and within those industries we will focus specifically on enrollment of new Americans, justice-involved, people of color, military veterans and spouses, and high school students. This is without a doubt the highlight of my career as a chamber executive, and I am beyond grateful for the dedication and support from our entire community, and especially the 78 businesses and elected officials who submitted letters of support for this grant. If you would like additional information or would like be a partner with us, please reach out to me or Jenna Mueller here at The Chamber.

Also, we have some big news with The Bridge magazine that you are reading now; you may have noticed that this is a September-October issue. Over the past year, we have been steadily and organically increasing the reach of our Chamber and community voice for a variety of important reasons. We are now moving forward with six expanded issues of The Bridge per year, published bimonthly, and investing our efforts into enhancing the reach and impact that our messages have. In the past, we would typically send around 12,000 physical and digital copies of the magazine to members, businesses, employees and leaders around town. Moving forward, our reach for each issue will be over 50,000 businesses and individuals. In addition to that, we are continuing to diversify our communication channels so you will see and hear us through numerous forms of media. We are extremely excited for this growth and evolution of The Bridge, and look forward to this becoming an even more powerful tool for the work that we are all doing together.

As you flip through the magazine you’ll come across many stories about the big things in store for our region. I want to specifically call attention to Fueling Our Future (FOF) and the newly-unveiled Master Workforce & Talent Strategy for our region, as this was a top priority for FOF, and we now have a blueprint to success when it comes to workforce challenges in our region. I also want to give very special recognition to our 2022 Legacy Leader, Richard Solberg. Richard’s leadership over the years has had an immense and extremely positive impact on the vibrant and growing FMWF region that we know and love today. In fact, Richard was the very first person that reached out to welcome me to the community almost two years ago. Congratulations, Richard. Please join the community as we come together to honor him at our Annual Celebration on October 18.

Enjoy this issue of The Bridge and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Shannon Full President & CEO
Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce

Meet the Chamber staff—New hires!

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

As Administrative & Finance Specialist, I handle the day-to-day mail and accounting aspects that come into the office. As part of the team, I work with the event registrations to help people get registered and send invoices afterwards.

What do you love about your role so far?

I love being able to interact with different people every day and following the accounting flow from setup and registration to the completion of an event and payment.

What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?

I like working with numbers and am very social. My family can attest to that by our involvement with local theatre groups. My husband and I have 8 children and they have all been involved in a theatre production over the last 18 years either as part of the cast, technical crew, or orchestra pit – each part is important.

Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?

Similar to theatre, each part of The Chamber is important as well. We help businesses and professionals work together as a catalyst for growth and prosperity in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo area.

Sytsma

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

I sit at the front desk and provide support to visitors and callers. I am also a member of our engagement team, where I support the team by scheduling meetings, reaching out to members and maintaining database records.

What do you love about your role so far?

I love getting to meet new people and learning new things about our community.

What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?

I have been married for 19 years and have four children. I also have an irrational fear of birds.

Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?

The people that work at the Chamber are truly passionate about what they do. They also have a love for this community and making it prosper. When you become involved in The Chamber you are in the hands of people that will be looking out for your best interest.

Matt

Please briefly describe what you do in your position.

I work closely with the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo business, education, government, and non-profit community to develop and deploy new programs, initiatives, and solutions to the workforce and talent issues facing our region, along with overseeing the management of current development programs like YPN, POC, and Leadership FMWF.

What do you love about your role so far?

So far, the thing that I love most about my job is working with the amazing team at The Chamber. I have had the good fortune to work with some wonderful groups in my career, but the passion, dedication, and professionalism I have seen in my short time with The Chamber has been unmatched.

What are a few fun facts you can share about yourself?

I enjoy wood working, playing guitar and going to concerts, cooking, playing golf, traveling with my wife and spending time spoiling our two dogs.

Why would you recommend businesses or professionals get involved in The Chamber?

When I moved to Fargo, I took a chance and submitted an application to participate in the FMWF Chamber Leadership program. That decision was one of the most impactful of my career. Leadership introduced me to so many wonderful things in the community, and connected me with an amazing network of local professionals who were eager and excited to improve the community through their professional contributions. The Chamber, The Leadership program, and the lasting friendships I was able to create truly made me feel like a member of the FMWF community.

Announcing the 2022 Legacy Leader - - - -

We are honored to announce that Bell Bank board chairman, accomplished businessman and community champion Richard H. Solberg is the recipient of this year’s Legacy Leader Award!

This prestigious award recognizes and emphasizes the important role and contributions of long-time local leaders in both shaping and serving the metropolitan community and greater region. Solberg was selected by a nomination committee based on his leadership in business and in the community.

“Richard Solberg’s leadership has had a tremendous positive impact on our community that will continue to benefit future generations,” remarked Chamber Board Chair Shawn Dobberstein. “Richard is thoughtful, passionate, caring and leads by example. He is always willing to serve and provide guidance for causes that will benefit the community. He is not a person who takes or needs credit for his contributions; he will always recognize and lift up the work of others on his team. He is so deserving of this prestigious Legacy Leader award from The Chamber. Richard, congratulations on this award and thank you for everything you have done to make FMWF a vibrant place.”

Richard Solberg serves as board chairman of Bell Bank. From 1968 to 1982, he worked for First National Bank, Grand Forks, N.D., and Citizens State Bank in his hometown of Finley, N.D. Solberg was named president and CEO of Citizens State Bank in 1979. Solberg became president and CEO of Bell Bank (at that time State Bank of Fargo) in 1982.

During Solberg’s tenure at Bell, the bank grew from a single north Fargo location to a regional bank and trust company, with multiple banking locations in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Solberg’s son, Michael, was named Bell Bank’s president in January 2009 and CEO in 2014.

Solberg has served on numerous boards including the F-M Economic Development Corporation and the Concordia Board of Regents. He has received the college’s Alumni Achievement Award, President’s Award, Regents Award and Mission Medallion. Solberg and his wife, Jo Ellen, live in Fargo and have 3 grown children and 11 grandchildren.

Fueling Our Future unveils Master Workf

Fueling Our Future (FOF) is unveiling new developments in a Master Workforce & Talent Strategy for the region. This comes after a formal evaluation of community feedback and review of the findings that were released on Monday, July 25. The Master Workforce & Talent Strategy has identified four specific goals.

1

Goal One

Develop and fund a systemic approach to align workforce efforts region wide

With each of these goals come several strategic and actionable steps. These steps, the research and stakeholder engagement findings can be found in the full report at fuelingourfuture.net.

“We are really excited about the future of this region,” remarked Chamber President & CEO Shannon Full. “I have been in FMWF for 18 months now and every day I am impressed by what we have to offer here. I believe that through significant strategic partnerships and better leveraging of our relationships and resources, we have all of the necessary components needed to elevate us to the next level.”

2

Goal Two

Expand and retain the regional labor pool

“Last summer, we held a major FOF retreat with business and community leaders and had the opportunity to level-set our education as leaders,” said GFMEDC President & CEO Joe Raso. “We heard impactful and educational presentations about the economy, demographics, trends and workforce. Then we had a half-day discussion that organically centered all around workforce development. Fueling Our Future was challenged to dig deeper to find ways to better work together, review all of the data that was shared and set a course of action for our region. That work has been done and it is now time to dig into this in a meaningful way.”

3

Goal three

Prime the workforce pipeline

You can view a video of the full July 25 event and learn more about Fueling Our Future by using the QR code.

4

Goal Four

Enhance and match adult skills

orce & Talent Strategy

Community leaders, businesses, educators, investors and stakeholders filled NDSU’s Festival Concert Hall on July 25 for the unveiling of our region’s Master Workforce & Talent Strategy. The research and strategy was funded by Fueling Our Future and developed by national consultancy group Economic Leadership LLC.

HELPING WORKERS ACHIEVE FINANCIAL WELLNESS BENEFITS BUSINESSES

At a time when hiring and retaining quality employees is a challenge, some businesses are finding success by focusing on employee financial wellness, not just salaries (although those are important too). This strategy can not only boost recruitment and retention efforts but also improve employee productivity. After all, financial concerns are a leading cause of stress and distraction for workers, which can spill into working hours.

This strategy can not only boost recruitment and retention efforts but also improve employee productivity. After all, financial concerns are a leading cause of stress and distraction for workers, which can spill into working hours.

Businesses can help employees achieve financial wellness by partnering with business advisors and benefits providers who make wellness a focus. These programs offer one-on-one and group sessions to guide employees, along with tools they can use to manage their individual goals and progress, helping workers take control and gain confidence without requiring the employer to manage the programs.

LOOK FOR WAYS TO HELP EMPLOYEES TAKE ACTION

People have the best of intentions when it comes to financial wellness but often fall just short of taking action. Employers can help overcome inertia by making it easy to engage — let employees talk with advisors during business hours, offer virtual meetings, and reward participation. Don’t forget the importance of education in financial wellness. Consider recording financial education sessions so employees can view them when it’s convenient.

GET CREATIVE TO HELP EMPLOYEES SAVE

GET CREATIVE TO HELP EMPLOYEES SAVE

One of the hardest financial wellness goals for many people to achieve is building emergency savings. Employers can help encourage their employees to save by choosing a financial wellness program that includes the option for employees to establish emergency savings accounts. These accounts offer a higher yield if the account owner deposits funds on a regular basis and lets it build up. Helping employees set up automatic deposits from their paycheck makes it even easier for them to save.

EMPLOYEE INTEREST IN HEALTH, DISABILITY, AND LIFE INSURANCE HAS SPIKED

EMPLOYEE INTEREST IN HEALTH, DISABILITY, AND LIFE INSURANCE HAS SPIKED

The COVID-19 pandemic raised awareness and interest in all types of insurance. Many workers took a closer look at their health insurance and became more savvy about comparing offerings. Meanwhile, it also became readily apparent to many why safety net insurance, like life insurance or long-term disability coverage, is so valuable. Employers should reexamine their offerings and consider offering or promoting these benefits as part of a complete package.

Retirement accounts are still one of the most visible and attractive benefits for employees, but like all aspects of financial wellness, they need to be used properly to have the desired impact. Managed accounts allow participants to prioritize their retirement goals and provide personalized strategies, making it easy to confidently take action and navigate retirement planning.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS EASY FOR BUSINESSES TOO

Making it easy to take action applies to employers, too. Offering a financial wellness program should be as easy to set up and administer as it is to use. Fortunately, the trend towards automation, online self-serve portals, and remote assistance from professionals allows business owners and administrators the same kind of convenience and time-savings the program is designed to deliver for workers.

Get Your Business Involved in the Ignite FMWF Platform

Now, maybe more than ever before, it’s critical that companies are engaging with both current and future talent pipelines. The Chamber recently launched Ignite FMWF to help our business community meaningfully engage with job seekers, students, educators and new opportunities all across our region!

MORE THAN YOUR AVERAGE JOB POST

Ignite FMWF provides tools to assist the onboarding process in a number of ways. Employers can post jobs and track an applicant’s progress as they fulfill the requirements set by the employer to ensure a most effective match. By the time a potential employee makes it to a business’ inbox, employers have greater assurance that the potential hire has the skills that employer needs, as well as the perseverance to pursue their career.

LIFE-LONG LEARNING

The Ignite FMWF platform provides ready to use training in all facets of business, featuring topics such as basic work skills, manufacturing, cyber-security, interpersonalskills, hospitality, and much more. Consistent education keeps long-standing employee/ employer relationships rich with learning and growth -- a rising tide lifts all boats.

FEATURES FOR BUSINESSES

Additionally, Ignite FMWF provides access to hundreds of “Career Card” videos. These videos explore careers through the eyes of real people working real jobs and are linked to other resources, such as average salaries, links to relevant education and job postings.

FMWF Chamber Foundation receives

On August 3, The Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber Foundation was awarded a $9.62 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) Good Jobs Challenge Grant. The FMWF Chamber Foundation, in collaboration with backbone organizations such as Grand Farm Research and Education Initiative, North Dakota State College of Science, Emerging Prairie, University of Mary, and Workbay, will bolster the region’s economy by developing the skilled workforce needed to support the regional agriculture, manufacturing and cybersecurity/I.T. industries.

In partnership with local employers, The FMWF Chamber Foundation will ensure that training programs meet the unique skill needs of our local employers and the regional economy. With a focus on underserved communities – including people of color, immigrants, veterans and military spouses, and justice-involved individuals – the grant will allow The Chamber Foundation and its partners to provide a variety of wraparound services and reduce barriers to starting and completing training.

million EDA grant

The Good Jobs Challenge Grant was a very competitive process with only 32 projects awarded out of over 500 applications nationwide. Of that, this was the only awarded EDA grant out of 20 applications submitted by organizations in Minnesota and North Dakota. 78 letters of support were submitted on behalf of employers in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo region.

The Ignite Initiative Regional Workforce Training System (IIRWTS) is a collaborative approach to addressing the metro area’s most pressing workforce needs. The IIRWTS addresses several barriers that prevent or discourage members of underserved populations from enrolling in skill training programs. Over the next three years, the region can expect over 900 participants to receive training through the program.

2022 Freedom Award - Gate City Bank

The FMWF Chamber is sending congratulations to Gate City Bank on being awarded the 2022 Freedom Award! Gate City Bank has been selected by the Secretary of Defense for this award – which is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to employers for exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members. Winners are recognized for going above and beyond to support National Guard and Reserve employees with enhanced pay and benefit packages, flexible scheduling, generous leave policies and support before and after deployment.

Each year, this prestigious honor is awarded to only 15 employers in the nation. Gate City Bank was selected out of 2,777 nominated employers.

Hear from Gate City Bank on what this award means to them

North Dakota Army National Guard

Gate City Bank was nominated for the award by Sergeant Bleau Hoge, a member of the North Dakota Army National Guard who is employed at Gate City Investment Services in Bismarck, ND. “I have served in the military for six years, and I have always been proud of serving my country. Other soldiers are always in disbelief when I tell them about the benefits that I am provided with Gate City Bank. They take great care to ensure that all servicemembers

– team members, customers and everyone in between – are treated with respect, dignity and honor.”

Known for its long history of support for military personnel, veterans and their families, Gate City Bank provides team members who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces with continued full pay when they are activated for any reason – including training, deployments and special assignments. Additionally, the Bank provides uninterrupted benefits including two weeks of paid time off to spend time with family and relax before returning to work following deployments.

“Gate City Bank elevates the standard by actively reaching out to military servicemembers to see how they can support them better or differently,” adds Andy Stein, Gate City Bank’s Vice President of Information Security,

ANDY STEIN

Gate City Bank

who has served in the North Dakota Army National Guard for 11 years. Stein was also deployed to Kuwait from 2011-2012 and Fort Meade, MD, from 2019-2020. “They provide a smooth transition in areas that are often stressful to soldiers: finances, benefits and family support. They even stayed in contact with me during deployment and trainings, just to see how I was doing and how they could help my family while I was away.”

Red Trail Vineyard Tour

On Tuesday, July 26, Women Connect ventured to Red Trail Vineyard in Buffalo, ND. Attendees enjoyed a tour of the beautiful vineyard nestled along the Buffalo Creek, as well as hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, trivia and connecting with one another. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Attendees of Business Training on August 10th had a rockin’ good time hearing from Jeremy Ostrowski of Aldevron. He drew from his experiences as an 80’s cover band drummer to share stories of courage, success and collaboration, and motivated the audience to make changes and take on challenges to become real life rock stars.

2022 MINNESOTA LEGISLATIVE SESSION UPDATE

In late July, we hosted Minnesota District 4 legislators Senator Kent Eken and Representative Paul Marquart to discuss the highlights of the 2022 Minnesota Legislative Session and its impact on our region. Topics of discussion included the budget surplus, regional bonding projects, workforce challenges and more. The discussion was moderated by Kurt Zellers, Primacy Strategy Group, and Shannon Full, The Chamber. Thank you to our dedicated Chamber and community members who joined us for this timely update. The FM Area Diversion Project

A historic groundbreaking for our region

On Tuesday, August 9, we came together to celebrate the official groundbreaking of The FM Area Diversion Project, an over-decade-long project fueled by community organizations, residents and policymakers advocating for permanent flood protection. The collaboration throughout our communities, on both sides of the river, is truly remarkable, and everyone involved should be extremely proud of this one-of-a-kind project that we were able to bring to fruition together.

This project will serve as a major asset to our business and residential communities, protecting North Dakota’s largest economic hub and Minnesota’s fastest-growing metro outside of the twin cities. Not only will this keep our businesses and nearly 250,000 residents protected, it will also strengthen our region’s business and talent attraction efforts. This was a historical day for the FMWF region. The Chamber is grateful for the support and dedication of our members, community organizations, elected officials and residents for making this project a reality.

Congratulations to Red River Valley Alliance and ASN Constructors for the vibrant and successful groundbreaking celebration in August, and thank you to all speakers, partners and elected officials for being present at this major event.

“Shannon is clearly angling for my job with this little series called ‘Makin’ It.’ I don’t know anyone else doing this. She is going out into the world and she is showing up. She is not talking about opportunities in plumbing, she is hanging out with the guys at Legacy. She is not talking about opportunities in drilling, she is hanging out with the guys at Cylclone. When I saw your videos - I mean honestly, I’m not just blowing smoke - I thought, ‘ok they get it.’ Go out. Attend. Show up. Be there.”
