n the edge of Hampstead Heath surrounded by tranquil landscaped gardens, Kenwood is one of London’s hidden gems - with a remarkable house come remarkable stories of the people who lived here. Kenwood House, was probably first built in the early 17th century, and equally probable, was a brick structure built by John Bill, King James I’s printer, who bought the estate in 1616. His son and grandson owned it until 1690, when it was sold to Brook Bridges for £3,400. The house, was significantly modified, possibly by Brook Bridges’s son, William, who owned Kenwood from 1694 to 1705. He then sold it to John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, in 1712. In 1754, William Murray acquired Kenwood for £4,000 and when in 1776, he was created 1st Earl of Mansfield he commissioned Scottish neoclassical architect Robert Adam to remodel the house. Changes included the addition of a new entrance and modernisation of the existing interior. Mansfield’s nephew, David Murray, succeeded to the earldom in 1793 and began to make significant changes which included a new

road diverting Hampstead Lane away from the forecourt, to provide the house with more privacy. His son, David William Murray, 3rd Earl of Mansfield then inherited Kenwood from his father at the age of 19. During the 19th century the Mansfields preferred to live at their Scottish estate. The 4th Earl, William David Murray however, spent three months of the year at Kenwood and in 1906 The 6th Earl of Mansfield, Alan David Murray inherited Kenwood House from his brother.. From 1909 it was rented out to tenants including Grand Duke Michael Michaelovitch, second cousin to the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II and his family

lived there until 1917 and were followed by American millionairess Nancy Leeds until 1920. In November 1922, Lord Mansfield sold off the contents of the house, including some original furnishings in a four-day sale. By 1925, however, Kenwood’s future was secured when Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, bought the house and 74 acres surrounding it. The Kenwood Preservation Council purchased land including the ponds and ‘Ken Wood’, and vested it in London County Council. The Iveagh Bequest Act of 1929 stipulated that Kenwood should be open free of charge to the public with the ‘mansion and its contents…. preserved as a fine example of the artistic home of a gentleman of the eighteenth century’ including the display of 63 of Lord Iveagh’s outstanding collection of Old Master and British paintings by artists including Vermeer, Rembrandt, Gainsborough and Reynolds. In 1949, realising the need for significant repair work, the Iveagh Bequest Trustees handed it over to London County Council. English Heritage took over in 1986 with an extensive repair and conservation project in 2012, part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Kenwood re-opened in 2013. Today, the magnificent grounds and breathtaking interiors of Kenwood Estate are 30 JANUARY 2021

A new lease of life P
atience & Gough is a young, two person collaboration, based in the heart of the Lake District. Alice Patience and Oliver Gough have made their mark on the furniture industry by recycling old antique furniture. Working out of a small studio, the couple have taken part in several trade shows, including the 100% Design Show. At the show the young couple were spotted by a buyer at Liberty London. They have now sold several pieces in the store, taking their creative business from strength to strength.
Now, to add to their repertoire, Alice and Ollie are offering an Interior Design service to complement their hand-finished furniture. Working closely with Kieron Mannix, a 3D artist from Brass Studios, the trio of creatives are brining their talent for bespoke projects into the interior design industry in the UK. Kieron is able to replicate Patience & Gough’s furniture and show it in a 3D model for the client to view. 36 JANUARY 2021

An iconic vision for London Underground

ondon-based design and brand experience company PriestmanGoode is working with Transport for London on the design vision for the New Tube for London, the next generation deep level underground trains for the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City Lines. The design for the New Tube for London is inspired by contemporary London, its culture and architectural landmarks and iconic British transport design. The New Tube for London features a walkthrough design, air-cooled cars, digital screens to enable live updates, wider doors to facilitate quicker turnaround times at stations and increased capacity. Natural finishes and materials in a palette of colours including charcoal, warm grey and oxblood were derived from looking at heritage and contemporary architecture and landmarks in London. Paul Priestman, Chairman of PriestmanGoode, explains ‘TfL wanted the New Tube for London

to celebrate the great history of transport design in London, whilst acting as a beacon of innovative 21st century public transport. UBER LAUNCHES RIVER BOAT SERVICE in partnership with Thames Clippers
L
ondon’s black taxis or ‘a black cab’ or affectionately the ‘London Cabbie’ have and always will be part of what makes our capital so special to residents, commuters and tourists alike. They were already equipped to deal with Covid 19 having a glass partition separating the driver from passengers. And the cabbies expert ‘Knowledge’ of London’s roads and little back streets holds no bounds. For something different, Uber is launching a London commuter boat service in partnership with Thames Clippers. Rebranded Uber Boat, the 20-strong fleet will cover trips up and down the River Thames from Putney to Woolwich from 23 piers across London. The service will allow Uber users to book a river journey through the app and board using a QR code on their phone. Uber Boat will be following all possible hygiene and social distancing rules, including reduced capacity and that passengers must wear face masks in line with Transport for London (TfL) guidance. The San Francisco company has also confirmed that it will be charging passengers the same price for booking a boat as it does for their cabs. Uber has already got bikes and food deliveries covered although their taxis are grounded as they await a London licence to be re-issued. Last year it added London Tube and bus

updates to the app. Uber could be on a mission to be the one-stop app for all your transport needs? Uber’s regional general manager for northern and eastern Europe – Jamie Heywood, said in a statemen: “Many Londoners are looking for new ways to travel around the city, particularly when they start commuting back to work. Later this summer we will launch the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers in London as a means for people to arrange travel on the river and road, all through the Uber app.” Delighted by the partnership, Thames Clipper’s co-founder and CEO Sean Collins further remarked, “The new partnership sees Thames Clippers and Uber, who both pride themselves on safety, reliability, and comfort, come together. It will allow us to link the two travel modes of river and road, providing Londoners and visitors with even more options to commute, visit, explore and enjoy our city by river.” Thames Clippers tickets will still be available to buy elsewhere and the boats remain part of the Oyster network. Over 4.3 million people use the River Thames for commuting and travelling each year, and over 40 per cent of passengers have said they will increase their use of Thames Clippers in the future as an alternative means of getting around the city.

How have you built your network of contacts and Instagram following? I became one of the first to showcase watches on Instagram and a lot of my photos went viral, focusing on detail is key. I now use WhatsApp to communicate with my 5,000 contacts across the world who I’ve acquired through Instagram and the word spreading.
Have you sourced watches for any famous names? I can’t reveal identities but I’ve worked with internationally renowned footballers, film producers, FTSE 100 directors and a C-Suite large fashion house director. Where in the world do you pick up watches, when restrictions allow? I’ve had weekend trips to Singapore, Dubai and the USA but it’s usually the larger European countries. What’s your best investment story? I sourced a Richard Mille Rafel Nadal RM035-02 watch for a client who was looking for a long term investment piece. They bought it for £180,000 and this model is now worth £280,000.

For the very first time, the UK will host an array of unique pieces from the mysterious political activist, satirist and artist, who has spent most of the last three decades anonymously tagging the streets of the world. This globally acclaimed showcase features original and authenticated works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. On display are prints, canvasses, screen prints, sculptures, unique works and limited-edition pieces mainly dated between the years 1997 to 2008, the period which resulted in Banksy’s most recognisable and well-known works. They are the only Bowie images Garner has left, after her entire photograph collection was stolen from storage in LA, 12 years ago. Fortunately, a friend had rescued this piece of history by keeping a handful of prints and negatives in his London studio. Photographer-turned-singer, Garner explains: “I was never a crazy Bowie fan, preferring the rough edges of Iggy to David’s personas, but after spending an afternoon with this magician, I found him to be one of the most amazing humans I have ever met. He was incredibly charming and had researched who I was and discovered that I had worked with his friend and producer Tony Visconti, who said that David was one of his favourite artists to work with.” The challenging shoot was for two different magazine covers in one afternoon, with both Esquire and Raygun wanting creative control. But

She adds: “The only request David balked at was me photographing his naked back from behind, because he had scoliosis. new display celebrates Tate Archive’s 50th anniversary with a journey through British art from 1600 to the 2000s. Featuring items from over 100 archive collections, it tells the story of new beginnings, historic moments and personal histories. From sketchbooks and drawings to unpublished photographs and letters, the display presents a series of treasures from the world’s largest archive of British art, The display includes a special focus on the 20th century, with material for each year from 1900-1999. for his broadcast of An Exile Looks Back for Caribbean Survey, Jamaican-born sculptor Ronald Moody recounts his impressions of arriving in the UK in the 1920s. Rare items include the programme for Yoko Ono’s event at the pioneering Destruction in Art symposium in London in 1966 and First World War medals belonging to sculptor Julian Phelps Allan OBE Table cases explore fascinating items from before 1900, including an illustrated letter from John Constable to his wife Maria with Constable’s never-before-seen administration of his goods. The display reveals the evolution of important arts organisations, alongside artist-led groups, collectives and venues that shone brightly for a brief period. Images of Wyndham Lewis and others at the Rebel Arts Centre in 1914 are exhibited along with a selection of materials relating to the Omega workshop, the design collective established by Roger Fry in 1913. Curated by Adrian Glew, Archivist, Tate and the Archive team (Andrey Lazarev, Clare Sexton, Darragh O’Donoghue, Derek Rice, Federica Berretta, Nastasia Alberti, Peter Eaves and Victoria Jenkins). Every precaution has been taken to make visiting the galleries a safe and enjoyable experience. Inspired by Trompe L’oeil (an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion), these pieces are made entirely out of hot glass while it is between 650-1150 degrees, which is then appearing as plastic bags of water. The trapped movement of the rising bubbles and the gesture of the forms convince the eye that the sculptures are just as they seem. What is fascinating is that our desires often override our true perception of reality and you believe what you think is visible as the truth.

DYLAN MARTINEZ Glass Sculptor Artist Dylan Martinez combines several glassblowing and sculpting techniques to form these hyper-realistic plastic bags from molten glass. Through these works, Martinez creates scenarios that obscure the viewer’s interpretation of reality and illusion. Driven by a deep curiosity in perception, Martinez creates these unique sculptures that convince the eye that the sculptures are just as they appear, plastic bags filled with water. Dylan’s art often examines the boundaries of human perception. His work challenges the viewer’s expectations through the manipulation of light, space, and the optical properties of glass. While influenced by traditional techniques in glassmaking, he constantly strives to discover novel approaches to exploit the material and create a lens to view the world afresh. Through Dylan’s artwork, the artist creates scenarios in which the viewer must question their capacity to navigate between reality and illusion. His curiosity of perception is driven by the fact that he is red-green colourblind. Having a deficit in his colour vision is an alternative way of seeing 60 JANUARY 2021
Denis Di Luca was born in Urbino, Italy and began his interest in ceramics at University in Italy when he studied Industrial Design. He began to discover the possibilities of combining clay with other materials and using specialist firing techniques (especially Raku) to produce contemporary ceramic art pieces. He is continuously refining and developing his skills in Raku, Naked Raku, Raku Dolce, Saggar, Obvara and Horse Hair ceramics. Each piece he creates is unique. The fusion of Italian design influences and traditional ceramic techniques adapted for contemporary tastes, resulting in highly individual items for your visual enjoyment.

CLAUDIO PULICATI Contemporary Ceramic Artist Young product designer Claudio Pulicati introduced his first collection GEA in 2018 – coloured single-flower ceramic vases created with a special technique, where each piece is covered with clay to show the rough texture on the surface. Claudio is currently based in Ischia – a small Italian volcanic island, that plays an important role in building his creative imagination. The name of the collection comes from a mythological goddess, who, as the mother of

This small boutique artist studio, based in Valencia, is run by two young entrepreneur artists. They are passionate about design and illustration, and have developed their own brand, famous for hand-crafted tableware with a fresh and modern style. This is their signature collection, but they also create bespoke designs on request. From jugs to plates and from bowls to bottles, they are perfect for any table setting or just as an individual decorative item. This hand-crafted and hand-painted porcelain tableware collection is beautifully finished with elegant gold detailing around the rim, which makes these pieces truly unique and luxurious. ELENA SALMISTRARO Product Designer Elena Salmistraro is an artist and product designer, who lives and works in Milan. She graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2008 and founded her own studio together with architect Angelo Stoli in 2009, where she has been working as a product designer and artist / illustrator ever since. Her creations are the result of a combination of art and design; which are characterised by a poetic style, the utmost care for details and a painstaking search for harmony in shapes. One of her main objectives is to explore the relationship between different mediums of the visual arts and expressive languages in order to fascinate people and evoke their emotions. These ape-like vases in saturated hues are part of Elena Salmistraro’s latest collections presented in Paris for Bosa called “Primates”. This set of fine ceramic vases has been created to remind us of the delicate relationship between men and apes. The collection is comprised of 6 pieces, which were showcased at Maison et Objet, referencing three different breeds of apes: the mandrill, belonging to the family of African Cercopithecidae; the golden monkey, Cercopithecus Kandti, belonging to the family of African Cercopithecidae; and Debrazza’s Monkey, also belonging to the family of African Cercopithecidae. Ape is the only animal that evokes man in body shape, expressions and movements. This powerful similarity to men is what makes it fascinating, and what inspired the creation of these vases.

BRAD KENNY Contemporary Portrait Artist Brad Kenny is a rapidly emerging artist from London, who specialises in portraiture and figurative representation of the human condition. Inspired by artists such as Jenny Saville, Frances Bacon, Andrew Salgado and Lucian Freud, Brad is attracted to Expressionist characteristics of strong colours, abstraction/distortion and individual experiences, exploring emotions, identity, character and narrative through portraiture. Tim Christie Digital Illustrator Tim Christie is a New Zealand-based designer, artist and entrepreneur. He has developed some of New Zealand’s most iconic brands, and his work was featured in New Zealand and 64 JANUARY 2021

As the mastermind behind the fashion-forward concept MONOMOKO, Tim Christie combines digital illustration and paint to create anthropomorphic images that fuse age-old tradition with modern technology. VALENTINA GUADAGNUCCI Valentina Guadagnucci is a contemporary artist. Born in Massa, Province of Massa Carrara, November 20, 1984. Since she was a child she showed a propensity for art and color. Over the years his “inclination” will prove to be a real love for drawing, painting and art. This passion grew with her to the point that at the age of fourteen he decided to continue his studies at the Artistic Lyceum Artemisia Gentileschi in Carrara and in 2001 he graduated with honors. In 2008, driven by his passion for art and theatre, he continued his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Department of Scenography, Graduating in October 2014. From there will spend 4 years of inactivity related to many personal problems that will greatly affect his artistic style. In April 2018, driven by a strong desire for “expression” and almost “liberation” he resumed his activity as an artist, receiving numerous awards. Can you share your experience of working on the new album during these uneasy times? My experience wasn’t too bad because all the songs I wrote with Elliot were written and recorded before the pandemic. Me, Andy and Charlie then wrote and recorded some songs in Summer 2020 when restrictions were eased. But I really miss performing live

Ana, what is the main message of this album that you want to share with the listeners? In this album I wanted to talk about the four stages of love. Each season represents a different stage of love. Spring is the first stage when love blossoms. Summer is the second stage when love is intense and passionate. Autumn is the third stage when you see flaws in your relationship. Winter is fourth stage when you fall out of love, which is usually the hardest stage. The main message is not to be afraid of falling in love and hiding your emotions, and to live in the moment. What does the release of this album mean to you? The release of this new album means a lot to me. I’ve spent a lot of time writing and recording all the songs on the album. I’ve put all my emotions and hard work into creating this album for the audience. I hope you’re going to love it. Can you name a track that you are really excited for listeners to hear ? I’m really excited for people to listen to ‘Be Yourself ’ and ‘Freedom’. I think many people can relate to ‘Freedom’, especially during the ongoing worldwide pandemic. I really like the vibe and the instrumental part of ‘Be Yourself ’ and it’s also the last song which I wrote for the album. 2020 was a challenging year that many of us spent working from home. How was it for you?
You have produced and directed the latest video of the new single “Goodbye” yourself. What was the story behind this video and what inspired you to try yourself in a new role of the producer and director? I created the story behind the song, ‘Goodbye’ and I produced and directed the video based on this story. The story is about two love birds. A tragedy occurs and the man commits suicide. When this happened, you don’t have time to say goodbye or farewell but there are many emotions build up inside of you that you want to release. But the river of life will roll on by. Apart from the release the new album, do you have any other plans for 2021? It’s hard to make plans for 2021 because we’re now on the third lockdown, but I continue to write a bunch of songs with Andrew Yeates. I really want to be able to play gigs and share my new songs with you.

PRE-NUPTIAL OR POST-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS: Should you consider having one? By Joanna Kay, Partner, Rayden Solicitors, Hampstead What is a nuptial agreement? This is an agreement setting out financial arrangements in the event of divorce. It can be signed before you marry or enter into a civil partnership (a pre-nuptial agreement) or after (a post-nuptial agreement). The terms can be reviewed during the marriage. Will it be awkward to raise the subject with my partner? Some may not consider an agreement romantic but it is a sign of trust and financial openness and gives you autonomy to set expectations and helps to prevent stressful financial disputes in the event of divorce. Are they becoming more common? Yes and they are especially useful to protect assets accumulated before marriage, inheritances and capital for children from a former relationship. They are increasingly common as more people marry later and with the rise of second marriages. Are they legally binding? In England they are not automatically binding 74 JANUARY 2021
but it is extremely likely that, if the agreement is fair, it will be upheld. Precautions can be taken to help the likelihood of it being upheld. What if I decide not to marry? If you wish to live together without marrying you can enter a cohabitation agreement. This can be drawn up before or after you move in together and helps to protect your financial position if the relationship ends. Thought of the day It has been said: ‘Imagine spreading everything you care about on a blanket and then tossing the whole thing up in the air. The process of divorce is about loading that blanket, throwing it up, watching it all spin, and worrying what stuff will break when it lands.’ Entering into a nuptial or cohabitation agreement helps to alleviate this worry and uncertainty. Born and bred in a small North Yorkshire village, Tommy’s first passion was cricket, dreaming of becoming a professional cricketer. Life however took him in a different direction, with his natural culinary talents leading him to swap cricket whites for chef whites. From his family’s farming background and working in his parent’s pub kitchen at a young age, Tommy has become highly acclaimed, known for unique

One of my favourite aspects would be showing guests and wedding couples around Hawkstone, I love the customer reaction of seeing each individual room. Also, for me it truly is about making our guests feel welcome and enjoying their visit.”

The company specialises in wild, pretty and romantic wedding floral design covering, London, Essex and surrounding areas • Tell me a bit about yourself and your company. I’ve always been creative and loved the outdoors. As a child I’d spend hours outside in the garden helping my parents prune the roses and plant tulip bulbs. I trained at Italia Conti Academy of theatrical arts and performed in West End shows as a singer/dancer for a number of years. I was frequently sent the most beautiful bouquets during the run from a florist stand outside the theatre on Seven Dials. Once I left the theatre world I struggled to find something that gave me the same passion. By chance a leaflet was popped through my door advertising a floristry course at my local university which caught my attention. I enrolled and am delighted to say it reignited my creative fire and reminded me how much I love working with natural materials. It was totally fate looking out for me and I’ve never looked back. I created Petal and Wild flowers to appeal to the bride who wants something completely unique and elegant on their wedding day. My style is romantic and natural, like flowers just picked from a country garden. I enjoy working with a loose brief so I can 116 JANUARY 2021
really be creative and design something stunning and enchanting for the big day. • Where do you get inspiration from? I get inspiration from so many sources, including the natural beauty of the English countryside. Pinterest and Instagram are great online tools too as they give you access to amazing floral designs from around the world. • What is your favourite part of being a wedding florist? I love the early morning trips to Covent Garden Flower market shopping for my blooms and the excitement to see what’s new in and what is in season. I also love seeing the bride’s reaction to her flowers on the wedding morning. It’s such a wonderful feeling after months of planning to know you’ve been a part of making someone’s special day look beautiful. • What plans do you have in the future? More weddings and more beautiful flowers! ow amidst a second national lockdown - it is more important than ever that students feel empowered in their learning through having a robust and supportive plan in place and that they keep prioritising their mental well-being. New research among 1,000 GCSE and A’ Level pupil, commissioned by Enjoy Education, a private tuition and home schooling company, has shown that 69% of students feel negatively about this year’s grades and nearly two in five (37%) think their 2021 results will not be a fair reflection of their ability. However, the research also goes on to show that nearly two thirds of students in the UK preferred studying from home during the last lockdown with one third believing they got their best work done when they were not under pressure from being in front of their peers. hadows and noises may all be very well, according to Angelou, but research shows that ‘maths anxiety’, a complex psychological and emotional phenomenon, which combines social threats and a fear of failure, has been found to affect one in ten children from at least the age of eight. The mastery approach to teaching and learning in mathematics, rooted in the Shanghai and Singapore methods, with their emphasis on a depth of conceptual understanding over breadth of coverage, is arguably a strong means by which to minimise or overcome pupils’ experience of maths anxiety. Maths mastery is predicated on the simple message that everybody can do maths, and it advocates teaching of concepts via a ‘concretepictorial-abstract’ method, an evidence-based theory of learning that advances that children to apprehend abstract concepts most effectively through three distinct techniques: • Learning through touch: manipulating concrete representations (e.g. ten counters to signify the number 10). • Learning through sight: viewing pictorial representations of concrete apparatus (e.g. pictures

of ten counters in different arrangements). • Learning through independent thought: using abstract representations (e.g. writing the figure ‘10’ and using it as the basis for calculations of one more and one less). These three techniques need not occur in a linear sequence; they may occur in parallel, with a pupil moving between them until the concept has become deeply embedded. Linked to this principle, concrete and pictorial resources are not stigmatised as ‘babyish’, to be dropped at the earliest opportunity for ‘hard sums’, but crucial conceptual apparatus that accompany pupils’ learning into senior school, supporting him or her in developing a high level of confidence and expertise. I like to imagine that if Maya Angelou had included mathematics in her treatment of things that do not frighten in her children’s poem ‘Life Doesn’t Frighten Me At All’, she might have written something along the lines of:

Lockdown Learning and AV1 Written by Mark Crundwell, Director of Teaching, Learning and Assessment
A
t the beginning of the March lockdown, some of Queen’s Gate School pupils were in India, Los Angeles and New York. One A Level student had physical health problems and was self-isolating long-term. In the early days of lockdown, staff faced challenges. They adapted the timetable to provide a two-hour break in the middle of the day so that students weren’t burnt out by too much screen time but managed to make class times as normal as possible and were teaching nine periods a day. When the School returned in September, staff moved over to blended learning with a webcam in every single classroom. Teachers and students who couldn’t attend in person were still logging on to the normal timetable. This meant that it was easy for girls who were self-isolating to simply “attend” the classes in a normal way without having to have a separate Zoom link for each lesson. It worked for most students, but they were concerned about A Level student Lucy who 130 JANUARY 2021
could not re-join class when School opened in September and so they rented an AV1 robot for her, which quickly became part of lessons. Sociology in particular relies so much on learning and applying core concepts that AV1 proved to be an ideal tool for discursive discussions. The sound quality is particularly good so Lucy can even catch comments from other people in the class. Pupils in school adapted by being responsible for collecting AV1 in the morning and returning it at the end of the day. It is also beneficial to try out AV1 before the first lesson to make sure it is situated in the best place to read information from the board while also having good sight lines to all other pupils in the class. BAOBAB OIL TO COMBAT DRY SKIN
Experts explain how oil derived from the baobab tree can help dull and dehydrated complexions. By Katie Wright.

irst things first: how exactly do you pronounce ‘baobab’? Well, there’s a bit of debate there. The British pronunciation is ‘bei-uh-bab’, whereas Americans usually say ‘baw-bab’. Whichever way you choose, one thing’s for certain – this skincare ingredient boasts lots of beauty benefits. Here’s what you need to know about baobab oil… What is baobab oil? “Pressed from the seeds of the baobab tree, baobab oil is a luxurious and nourishing oil that’s rich in omegas 3, 6 and 9,” says Tiffany Salmon, founder of Scientia Beauty. Originating in Africa, the baobab tree can be found in “Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and even Senegal, Gambia or Mali,” says Helena Mendès, founder of Mawena. “It’s known as the ‘Tree of Life’ due to its fruits that are full of nutrients. African women have been using this oil in their natural skincare routine for hundreds of years,” she adds. What are the benefits of using baobab oil? “Due to its high content of omegas, it’s packed with skin-friendly fatty acids and is especially high in linoleic acid, which means it’s great for maintaining a healthy skin barrier,” says Salmon. “With levels of vitamins B and C too, it’s really going to help give skin a brighter and more radiant look.” Mendès says the omegas can help make it “an ideal treatment for psoriasis and eczema” (always check with your own doctor or dermatologist before trying new products if you have a skin condition), and that the oil is particularly effective for “dry and sensitive skin, thanks to its softening, nourishing and moisturising qualities” too.

Which skin types does baobab oil benefit the most? “Honestly, I believe everyone can benefit from using baobab in their routine, who doesn’t want a healthy skin barrier?” says Salmon. “However, it is absolutely perfect for anyone with dry, dull, dehydrated or ageing skin, as it’s really going to help rejuvenate and nourish tired skin that needs a bit of extra love.” Mendès says the oil is ideal for “dry, sensitive or inflamed skin” but she warns against slathering on too much – a little goes a long way. “It should be used lightly as it could clog some people’s pores, which could then worsen acne on oily and acne-prone skin. To use it, you should first test it on a patch of skin to make sure you don’t experience any redness.” How should it be used as part of your skincare routine? “I love using baobab as part of an oil blend to apply directly to the skin,” says Salmon. “But if having an oil step in your routine isn’t for you, another easy way to incorporate baobab is actually through an oil based cleanser.” She recommends using the baobab oil first as part of a double cleanse, following with a gel or exfoliating cleanser. Baobab can also be used as a serum or moisturiser at the end of your skincare routine, Mendès says: “To apply it, rub a few drops between the palms of your hands to emulsify the oil. You can then gently press it onto your face and neck.”

One patient’s experience of robotic knee surgery
A
patient who was the 100th person to be operated on using the Mako robotic-arm system at award-winning Parkside Private Hospital has said he is ‘blown away’ by the extraordinary technology involved in the procedure. Peter Mason, 75, said he ‘wholeheartedly recommends’ surgery at Parkside Hospital to any patient suffering with knee pain as a result of wear and tear or arthritis. Peter’s surgery took place on 14 November and marked a century of operations at the hospital using the ground-breaking Stryker Mako robotic arm. He had both knees partially replaced with the help of the technology. A retired engineer, Peter enjoyed keeping fit before suffering debilitating knee pain that worsened in February 2020. After a friend recommended Parkside Hospital, Peter made an appointment and soon learned that he would need both of his knees partially replaced.
“I don’t go into hospitals much but the care and level of attention I received at Parkside more than met my expectations” Peter had his surgery on 14 November, describing it as a ‘seamless process’. He’d asked to be sedated during the operation and was unconscious during the hour-long procedure. This meant he didn’t feel any pain or discomfort, and awoke to find his new knee in place. Peter described the surgery as “smooth as anything”, adding: “I don’t go into hospitals much but the care and level of attention I received at Parkside more than met my expectations. From the preoperative care and robust Covid precautions to surgery itself – I couldn’t fault a thing”. Peter was discharged a few days after surgery. Within weeks he was off painkillers and restarting his everyday activities. Mr Giles Heilpern, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (right), said: “The Mako robot is fantastic. report less pain, better early function after surgery and go on to achieve excellent long-term outcomes. I am proud to be involved with this innovative technology and genuinely see it as a game-changer in surgery.”

What is it and why you should go
E
ach year, around 3,000 women in the UK are told they have cervical cancer. A smear test can save your life and is the most effective way to prevent cervical cancer. Shockingly, many women are missing tests, with cervical screening at their lowest for two decades. King Edward VII’s Hospital Consultant Gynaecologist Mr Joseph Yazbek, explains why you should attend a smear test and alleviates any concerns you may have. What is a smear test? A cervical smear is a swab that tests the health of your cervix (the opening to your womb). It simply tells you whether you are at low or high risk of developing cervical abnormalities. It doesn’t diagnose cancer, just flags potentially abnormal cells. Should your smear result come back as abnormal, then you may be asked to attend for another test - called a colposcopy - to confirm whether the cells are indeed abnormal. Why you should attend a smear test? Around 220,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cell changes each year, and there are around 850 deaths from cervical cancer in the

UK every year. Regular cervical screening to detect abnormal cells on the entrance to the womb could reduce these numbers. A smear test may bring a few minutes of discomfort, but prevent 75% of cervical cancers so could save your life. It is a very straightforward procedure that lasts

around five minutes and meant to prevent you from developing invasive cervical cancer.. There are a few ways in which you can make the test more comfortable for yourself: • Wear comfortable clothes to feel more at ease • If you prefer, you could ask for a woman to do the test • Ask to change your position if it’s uncomfortable • Bring a friend to support you • Have a treat afterwards! Who is invited for a cervical screening? In the UK, women, and trans men who still have a cervix, between the age of 25 and 49 years old are invited for cervical screening every three years. Those aged 50 to 64 years old are invited every five years. If you’re over 65, you will only be invited for cervical screening if you’ve had an abnormal test result from a recent smear test. Why are women missing smear tests? A study by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust found that body hang-ups were one of the main reasons for women missing their smear tests. One in three said that being embarrassed about their body was one of the reasons for not attending their
appointment. Others just don’t see it as a priority, saying they wouldn’t miss the gym to attend. Attending your smear test appointment is the best way for you to keep a check on the health of your cervix. What is HPV? HPV refers to a group of viruses largely transmitted through sexual contact. The vast majority of HPV strains don’t cause any issues, but certain ones (strains 16 and 18) can cause cervical cancer. The good news is that there are vaccines available for these types of HPV. This is why early detection is key and cervical screening can help with this.

Should I still go for my smear test during COVID-19? The short answer is yes, if you’re not displaying coronavirus symptoms: important tests like smear tests are currently still going ahead as normal and GP surgeries are working as usual. Joe and Jenny Smith Sculpture
J
oe and Jenny Smith, are a father and daughter sculptural partnership with a deep commitment to the practical application of their mutual creative skills. Each have good Arts degrees, but their work is essentially practice and experience driven. They work principally in slate, which they generally source from British quarries, although they have worked with Voss slate in Norway, and Vermont slate in New York. They construct a wide range of solid, mostly large scale vases, obelisks, spheres and fruits with accompanying plinths and walled enclosures where required. The average size of works would be 3-5 feet, but they have created pieces from 18inches up to 10 feet. Inspiration is largely classical with the ogee or returning curve a dominant motif. The original 5 foot Greco-Romanesque vase is typical of this: their popular Pear is an idiosyncratic development of a similar curvaceousness. Joe has long years of prize-winning dry-stone walling experience, from the construction of functional live-stock boundaries to architectural and horticultural applications, finally moving to the current sculptural dimension, designing and creating the first slate vase in 1996. Jenny, a fine painter at the time, became a full-time potential protĂŠgĂŠ in 2014 and has proved to be every bit as dedicated and capable as her father. The essence of their work is the dry-stone nature of its construction. Where works need

to be moveable they make them sectionally with a cement core while maintaining the dry-stone appearance- but their larger, in situ works achieve 100% stability with no additional bonding. Slate has of course been used for hundreds of years as a highly durable, roofing material, where its cleaving propensity has been skillfully exploited. Joe and Jenny need similarly to split their slate from blocks, and then shape and dress the edge of each piece by hand to form the requisite curve. The colour and texture of the slate varies depending on which type is chosen, so each piece can be customised to suit its environment. The differences between wet and dry and light and shade give an additional and ever-changing textural emphasis.

Rebecca comments “An open dialogue with our clients is a fundamental part of our process, this collaboration results in an entirely bespoke home for them to enjoy for years to come.’ Rebecca and Emily are currently working on the conversion of a large Arts and Crafts property from apartments back to a single dwelling. Today, the owner is able to put in a full day’s work then relax with sunset yoga and spa looking over the Thames and London skyline. A quick steam followed by a glass of something at the bar and a BBQ among the ancient olive trees and then to the cinema. All possible without leaving the penthouse. This is the ultimate Lockdown Chelsea Penthouse. Studio Clark + Co delivered a stylish, eclectic yet masculine aesthetic over the two levels of the penthouse. Upstairs, the feel is urban chic; exposed structural beams and columns celebrating the architecture of the apartment with warm wood and textured stone to offset the steelwork. The beams are further softened using specialist lighting and paint finishes. The walnut parquet floors inside blend with the sustainably harvested tropical hardwoods outside. Outdoor terrace highlights include a firepit, minimalist spa and a yoga platform designed to catch the last rays of sunset. The cocktail bar features bespoke bar stools and a suspended glass and bottle rack. It is equipped with cocktail making facilities and temperature-controlled wine storge. Molecular gastronomy gadgets are present in the kitchen. Lights and blinds are controlled using industry leading AV along with an award winning cinema system which retracts into discrete custom
