Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to London in May.

Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the annual festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet –featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.

CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden.

While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of

the festival.

Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his large-scale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings.

At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art – sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This sitespecific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size.

In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes – sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.

SOLUS DECOR: Fire And Water

At Solus we design, manufacture, certify and produce all our products in house in our founding location in Vancouver, Canada. Our fire and water features are made from high performance concrete that is the perfect material for all climates, extreme heat in beach locations or snow and ice in the mountains. You can find a Solus fire bowl at the Hotel Le Toiny in St Barths, Caldera House in Jackson Hole Mountain resort, United States, Lakeside Hotel and Spa at Lake Windemere in the UK and in the Champagne region of France at the Royal Champagne Hotel and Resort. Whatever your location our products create the finishing touch to any outdoor living space in both commercial and residential settings.

We have had the great fortune to work with many fantastic designers both in the UK and around the world, with our offices in the UK, Canada, and Spain. We work hand in hand with both designers and homeowners during the planning and buying process to ensure they get the right product for both location and lifestyle. Solus fire pits have the option to work with mains gas, LPG and Biofuel making them truly flexible for any outdoor space.

Many of our new products are also based on feedback from existing clients such as the Pacific Rim; our first combined fire and water feature. This idea stemmed from those lacking in space but wanting the option of both fire and water in their outdoor space and thus the Pacific Rim was born. The same is true of our new Tavolo fire table. Many of our clients were looking for something that provided a table and fire at the same time in an outdoor seating area; the Tavolo does exactly that with the fire offset allowing you

feature to an existing garden design. There is no complex pipework required you can simply plug and play. The water dome was featured in the wellness garden designed by Nicky Hollier of Border in a Box at Chelsea Flower Show in 2022. Solus have established a good history with the RHS Flower Shows having exhibited at the show since 2016 and our products been featured in award winning show gardens including Rosemary Coldstream at Hampton Court and Leon Davis at RHS Tatton. We are thrilled to be exhibiting again this year at RHS Chelsea Flower Show where we will be showing a complete outdoor living experience.

The ethos of Solus is to provide sustainable, durable well designed products that are built to last so they can be enjoyed for many years with family and friends.

Claridge’s - the legendary Mayfair hotel - often referred to as the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023.

Claridge’s Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel’s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures. Showcased for all to see in Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows, this display will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel. Mementos include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, celebratory fans created by the hotel in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The showcase will also include treasures that have been collected over the years from a charming figural biscuit tin in the form of the royal state coronation coach.

Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows will be open to view in the hotel’s lobby throughout May 2023, when the Mayfair hotel will also be proudly flying Union Jack flags across its entrance bringing

a sense of pomp and ceremony to Brook Street.

For more details, please visit Claridge’s, Brook Street, Mayfair, W1K 4HR

Meanwhile, the hotel’s signature Claridge’s Crest Cake, will have an extra regal touch. The crown in the hotel’s emblem acts as a symbol of status and Claridge’s royal appointment, and so – for the week of the Coronation – will be flourished with gold leaf. Claridge’s newest bar - The Painter’s Room - will create a special drinks menu, nodding to the fact that King Charles himself is a celebrated painter. The cocktail list will reflect the King’s love of his garden at Highgrove and all things floral, botanical and sustainable.

Claridge’s has long been seen as ‘the royal hostelry’ from as far back as the nineteenth century and has a wealth of royal stories and anecdotes. For one Coronation, extra emergency flagpoles had to be added to the brickwork of the hotel in order to fly the flags for the many different royals and royal dignitaries staying at Claridge’s. Another legendary royal tale was that a few days before a notable royal occasion, when a harassed diplomat telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the King, the response was “Certainly sir, but which one?”.

Fostering Curiosity

AYear 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond, says the Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Joseph Birchall.

“At QE, our mission is for all members of our community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. As Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique fourschool model, we harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.”

“In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, here at QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6, and stay with us until Year 9. We find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so we made it our focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers.”

“Importantly, we have made a crucial decision not to assess our Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common

evaluation tasks” - these are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows us to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond.”

“Our all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything we do here at QE, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout King’s Magna. We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence.”

Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.

So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.

Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete non-imposing, nonthreatening professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast

training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.

Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day toe-to-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any physical altercation at all costs. Realworld bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families with their stealth ability and emotional intelligence.

With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.

Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.

The greatest flower show on earth returns to Royal Hospital Chelsea with stunning garden designs, gorgeous floral displays and exclusive shopping. The world’s most prestigious flower show is more than a century old, but RHS Chelsea still delivers new ideas in horticulture. It is the pinnacle of garden design.

RHS has revealed the garden line-up for 2023 from the best garden designers gathering to showcase cutting-edge design and ideas with inspiration, colour and innovation. Expect to be dazzled!

2023 Show Gardens include:

The Savills Garden - designed by Mark Gregory, built by Landform Consultants Ltd. The Savills Garden evokes the experience of stepping into the intimate walled garden of a country hotel. The combination of beautiful ornamental and edible planting provides a tranquil retreat and a source of the very best in flavours and for the Chelsea Pensioners in a working

kitchen, set amongst edible planting for a true ‘from plot-to-plate’ experience.

Horatio’s Garden - designed by Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg, built by Ryan Alexander Associates. A place of sanctuary and hope, embracing the mission of Horatio’s Garden charity to create and nurture beautiful, accessible gardens in NHS spinal injuries centres. Designed to be an immersive, restorative haven, the garden is the antithesis of a clinical hospital environment and strongly influenced by the ways of seeing and experiencing for patients, either from a bed or from a wheelchair. Horatio’s Garden is the first garden on Main Avenue specifically designed to be wheelchair-accessible.

Samaritans’ Listening Gardendesigned by Darren Hawkes, built by Landform Consultants. Inspired by stories of people who found the courage to reach out to Samaritans in their darkest times. Sculptural seats positioned throughout the garden remind us that taking time to talk can change our perspective on the world. A sculpture of a female figure by Andrew Litton, called Listening, sits in a quiet corner, waiting to hear the thoughts of those who pass through. Designer Darren Hawkes is currently training to become a listening volunteer, the garden is a special opportunity to celebrate the charity’s 70 years of supporting people.

The Fauna & Flora Garden - designed by Jilayne Rickards, built by Living Landscapes. The garden maps the journey of an ecotourist on a gorilla trek, tracing a rough track through a succession of lush and changing landscapes. The garden aims to demonstrate the

critical importance of protecting nature and how this can be best achieved by putting people and collaboration at the heart of conservation efforts.

2023 Sanctuary Gardens include:

The Boodles British Craft Garden - designed by Thomas Hoblyn, built by The Landscape Consultants. The garden celebrates British craft makers by using their skills. Features such as the arbour created by Cox London, which serves as the destination within the garden and the floating pool by water sculptor Bamber Wallis, which mimics raindrops dancing across the surface. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites’ stylised depiction of woodlands, the garden is filled with plants selected for their perfected forms.

The RSPCA Garden - designed by Martyn Wilson, built by Landscape Associates. Featuring a contemporary structure akin to a wildlife observation hide, enabling views out into the space. A rill, framed from recycled plastic, flows through the garden, creating movement and sound. It cascades into a pool, providing a spot for quiet contemplation, as well as a source of water for wildlife. The whole space is enclosed by hedging and a canopy of native trees and shrubs, essential for birds and wildlife. the garden hopes to inspire visitors to mark the RSPCA’s 200th birthday by creating outdoor spaces for all creatures to share.

Hamptons Mediterranean Garden -

designed by Filippo Dester, built by Garden Club London. A contemporary outdoor living space redolent with the look, feel and smell of sunny Mediterranean landscapes; a tranquil place where the warm textures of the architecture merge into nature. An outdoor kitchen is the garden’s focus with a shady alfresco dining space to relax, enjoy cooking and entertain friends and family.

The Great Pavilion

Felicity Barnard, Commercial Director, Ascot Racecourse, comments: “There are very few events that allow people to embrace dressing for a special occasion on such a global scale and each year Royal Ascot becomes the most followed display of sartorial elegance and individual flair – a true celebration of style that is woven into the very fabric of Ascot’s DNA. I look forward to seeing the racecourse brimming with colour and energy as we head into the spring/summer season.

“This year sees an exciting evolution for what has been known as the Royal Ascot Style Guide for more than a decade.

For 2023 Ascot is proud to unveil the Royal Ascot Lookbook where, for the first time, we look to inspire people through six new fashion edits that draw from current styling trends. Responsible style remains a key part of Royal Ascot as we continue to find

ways to dress, whether that is renting occasionwear or investing in forever pieces.”

Luke Jefferson Day, stylist, comments: “This season I wanted to encourage unexpected freedom under the guidance of the enclosure dress codes and inspire racegoers to be a little more unconventional and inventive in the way they dress up, and how they source their looks. We’ve championed innovative British designers, whilst also showcasing international brands from further afield.

Damian Foxe, photographer and narrator of the Lookbook comments: “As a long-time collaborator of Royal Ascot, it has been a joy to be part of the Lookbook’s evolution as it moves away from a means to communicate the dress code, and instead towards becoming a source of fashion inspiration and a bellwether in the world of occasion dressing.

“For 2023, we have decided to completely move away from creating a Lookbook dictated by enclosure, in favour of one which puts style centre stage. In many ways, I think this reflects what we are seeing as the evolution of style at Royal Ascot and the myriad of looks on show from its racegoers”.

Royal Ascot will be held from Tuesday 20th – Saturday 24th June 2023.

Specialist Dermatology Services at The clinic@78

We understand that skin health can be deeply personal, and living with a skin condition can significantly impact your overall wellbeing and life.

Skin conditions are common. The NHS estimates that around 24 percent of people in England and Wales visit their doctor with a skin problem each year.

If you have a skin problem, it is important to get it checked out. For example, if you’re over 35 any new moles should be examined. Moles are usually harmless, but in rare cases can develop into melanoma (a type of skin cancer).

Our skin is our body’s biggest organ. It plays an important role in protecting us. Our skin provides an airtight, waterproof barrier between the outside world and our body’s other organs and systems.

Your skin has many other functions too. It helps you regulate your body temperature, defends your immune system, aids vitamin production and supports your sense of touch.

Whatever your skin health concerns, The clinic @78’s dermatology team can thoroughly assess your symptoms. We offer rapid appointments to see our highly experienced Consultant Dermatologist, Dr James Hickey, who can help with a broad range of skin conditions, including skin cancer & moles, eczema, psoriasis & acne.

During your detailed consultation,

Our extended services include 20, 30 or 40 minute GP appointments, contraception such as coils and implants, and minor procedures like joint injections, toenail surgery and skin lesion removal.

We also provide rapid, in-house access to:

• Diagnostic tests including blood tests & ultrasound scans

• Specialist Consultants

• Pregnancy care service – our scans include early pregnancy, anomaly, reassurance and well-being, gender and growth, 3D and 4D. We also offer NIPT in form of the Harmony Test

• Specialist Menopause Clinic

GP appointments start at £90 for 20 minutes.

Dr Hickey will discuss your symptoms and suggest which treatment is the most suitable for you.

If clinically appropriate, we usually carry out skin lesion removal on the same day, as a simple outpatient procedure with minimal scarring.

Techniques used:

• Freezing (cryosurgery)

• An excision (careful removal with a very fine scalpel)

We will also provide comprehensive advice and support to help you manage your skin condition.

Discover how our experienced skin health experts can help: call us on 01202 767000. Alternatively, you can view further information about our full range of services and book an appointment via our website .

We accept all patients insured with AXA and WPA.

Appreciate every moment – these are words often mentioned with the ZENEA brand of Swiss Made premium timepieces. Being a core philosophy of the brand, it is applied to all aspects of the ZENEA company and in the daily life of the ZENEA Founder Jason Hutton. As our lives race by and days and weeks blur together, a ZENEA timepiece reminds us to pause and appreciate every moment. We tend to think of the passage of time in terms of days, months, years and big occasions that we experience, taking a moment to appreciate the ordinary such as a conversation with a good friend or loved one, sharing a great meal or joining someone in laughter is what truly connects us all.

His love of creating genuine and meaningful connections is what inspired Jason to establish the ZENEA timepiece brand; and of course, his love and appreciation of beautiful timepieces. ZENEA launched in December of 2019 with their first line of Dive Watches, called the Ula Diver, which means “sea jewel” in Celtic. The watch has been well received by watch enthusiasts across the world.

Being a Canadian Brand, many unique design elements are incorporated into the design of our exceptional timepieces that not only compliment the overall design aesthetic of our watches but also pay tribute to our Canadian roots. The second hand and chapter ring markers of the ZENEA Ula Diver and outer packaging is finished in the same Pantone colour

that is used in the red of the Canadian flag. The exceptional finishing and attention to detail in the watch design, as well as the packaging contributes to the experience of owning a ZENEA timepiece from the moment a customer opens their box to the many months and years they will enjoy their watch.

A ZENEA timepiece marks more than just time, it reminds us to appreciate the time we are granted, every moment we are given. A classic, exquisitely crafted ZENEA timepiece travels with you in your personal journey through time. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than knowing someone has chosen a ZENEA timepiece to share that journey with them.

Solus Decor Fire & Water | Cedar Nursery | Horsley Road | East Horsley | Cobham | Surrey KT11 3JX | 01088191495 Creating outdoor living spaces for all year round.

The season of outdoor living is upon us, and as openair spaces become areas to extend life into, we should make the most of every minute. Renowned outdoor design brand CaneLine knows the effect fresh air, seeing the sky and – dare we dream it – a flash of sunlight can have on the day, its pieces focused on creating joy, as well as the weather-proof practicalities.

The 2023 Cane-Line collection of designer outdoor furniture doesn’t do conventions. Picture a set of outdoor chairs, an outdoor table, an outdoor sofa. It doesn’t look like that. Every contemporary, boundary-pushing al fresco design is carefully crafted to create daily servings of indulgence,

intimacy, satisfaction, smiles, charm, and cheer. Let’s explore the highlights and how they can impact our day-to-day lives.

Self-care is the phrase on everybody’s lips, but so often not at the top of to-do lists. We all need some time to ourselves, to step back and assess, or to put everything to one side and just be. That’s where Cane-Line’s Hive Hanging Chair comes in, an encompassing shape which hugs the sitter, carving out a protected piece of space within its loosely woven walls. A sculptural silhouette creatively crafted from weather-resistant, weave, it’s at once a visual focal point and a shaded, private area to have to yourself. Hang it on a rope to add a meditative swing to stolen moments. Need some extra outside space to host or relax in? When no other areas seem quite right? Fashion a

new one in seconds with Cane-Line’s Hyde Parasol, which forms its own living zone wherever it travels. Sunny or not, the expansive square canopy is architectural, like an extension of an indoor ceiling, instantly creating a room-like feel, shade, and a sense of seclusion, everywhere it stands.

Taking lounge furniture outside can sometimes feel wrong. That’s what living rooms are for! Think again. Who says outdoor living is only for functional occasions like hosting, eating and cooking. Why not relax al fresco? Take a book, take a cup of tea, take another person and take time out under the sun. It’ll be the highlight of your day.

The Peacock Chair straddles the bridge between indoor and out – pretty and practical, visually like something that belongs inside, but ready to be exposed to the elements. Member of a comprehensive collection of designer outdoor seating, the range’s brutalist grey palette echoes the tones of many buildings’ exteriors (and the occasional sky...), while its curved forms mirror contemporary interior trends, with natural accents pulling them both together. Calming the designer chair’s predominant greyscale tones are teak legs and woven seats made from weather-proof soft rope, which speak of nature and craft tradition, adding an elegant, shouldn’t-that-be-protectedfrom-the-rain edge.

There’s a moment when the evening starts drifting, begins to loosen and unravel. When pudding is finished. When guests begin to float away. When there’s nothing left to do but deeply exhale. It’s a dream-like, gentle time when light has faded but the day’s not come to a proper conclusion. There’s still time for something more.

How to tackle this hazy feeling furniture-wise? With something similarly undefined, that can change and evolve as well as forming areas that are alluring, easy and oh-so comfortable. Enter the Cane-Line Capture Sofa, which effortlessly harmonises with any backdrop, so the eye smoothly meanders over its calming curves before the body melts into them. Its rounded corners and integrated tables prompt socialising. Its tonal taupe upholstery and teak details create tranquillity. Its sink-into-me softness is all about snuggling.

Finally, say goodbye to limitations with the Choice Chair: a modern interchangeable seating system of different parts, it’s created with flexibility, classic Scandi style, and the environment at its forefront. The pioneering modern chair is based around a seat produced with up to 98% recycled polypropylene, its cover and legs designed to be changed without tools, transforming it from metal sled-based bar stool to teaklegged dining chair. And at the end of its life? Effortlessly recycled. Book an appointment at the Chaplins Furniture showroom in Hatch End to experience the latest Cane-Line creations in person.

Why should I choose a steel-framed garden building option from Hi Tech?

Unlike many of our competitors, our structures are fabricated in-house using square-tube steel instead of the cheaper C profiles. This means that our buildings are better able to withstand the strongest English winds and storms without creaks and structural movement. Because we fabricate the structure in-house, we also have control over the fabrication schedule, design, ease of assembly and build quality, and thus ensure that the job built ‘right first time’.

Our steel chassis structures are typically installed on a number of concrete support pads

Benefit: This means that there is less garden spoil produced for removal Vs fabricating a complete concrete slab base. This allows us to achieve an assembled framework, on its foundation bases, with reduced materials cost and a quicker installation time. The steel-framed structure is assembled from prefabricated section lengths and erected on site.

The building can therefore be installed in restricted access areas with fewer restrictions on the overall final size (subject to permitted development or planning constraints).

Because our steel framed structure is a completely bespoke fabrication there are none of the design or layout constraints imposed by modular systems such as SIPS panel construction. The steel framed structure can also be designed to accommodate higher floor loadings. Enabling uses such as a home gym etc, withstanding the impact and shocks transmitted by the use of weights and equipment.

The steel structure provides a rigid framework for subsequent

fit-out by traditional trades, enabling a high level of fit and finish of walls and windows. This also means that future maintenance or building amendment does not require specialist skills, material or equipment. The structural integrity of the steel frame structure means that buildings can be produced with larger, open span widths. This means, as a bespoke structure, larger glazed openings can be accommodated than other construction methods or materials.

Clement Windows Group has manufactured brightly coloured red and yellow steel door frames for a stunning South London home.

Hannah Cecil-Harden is a director at de Gournay, a family business founded by her father, Claud Cecil Gurney. De Gournay makes exquisite hand-painted and embroidered wallcoverings and the company’s work adorns some of the finest buildings in the world.

Hannah recently decided to reconfigure her London property to

accommodate her growing family and the basement was turned into a playroom with adjoining utility and bathroom. The walls of the playroom are decorated in a beautiful hand-painted wallpaper scene of London.

Having worked with Hannah previously, Clement was approached to manufacture the new steel doors included within the designs for this space. Hannah wanted the steel frames to be painted to match the vibrant colours included in the wallpaper.

The steel frames to the exterior are polyester powder painted RAL 9004 Signal Black on the outside and RAL 1016 Sulfer Yellow on the inside, while the interior doors are painted in the same yellow on the playroom side and RAL 3005 Wine Red on the utility and bathroom side.

Peter Clement, Chief Executive of Clement Windows Group, commented: “We always say that our bespoke steel products can be painted in specialist hues from across the entire colour spectrum and these doors really demonstrate what is possible!”
