Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to London in May.

Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the annual festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet –featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.

CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden.

While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of

the festival.

Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his large-scale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings.

At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art – sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This sitespecific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size.

In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes – sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.

CLARIDGE’S SET TO MARK THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING

Claridge’s - the legendary Mayfair hotel - often referred to as the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023.

Claridge’s Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel’s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures. Showcased for all to see in Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows, this display will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel. Mementos include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, celebratory fans created by the hotel in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The showcase will also include treasures that have been collected over the years from a charming figural biscuit tin in the form of the royal state coronation coach.

Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows will be open to view in the hotel’s lobby throughout May 2023, when the Mayfair hotel will also be proudly flying Union Jack flags across its entrance bringing

a sense of pomp and ceremony to Brook Street.

Meanwhile, the hotel’s signature Claridge’s Crest Cake, will have an extra regal touch. The crown in the hotel’s emblem acts as a symbol of status and Claridge’s royal appointment, and so – for the week of the Coronation – will be flourished with gold leaf. Claridge’s has long been seen as ‘the royal hostelry’ from as far back as the nineteenth century and has a wealth of royal stories and anecdotes. For one Coronation, extra emergency flagpoles had to be added to the brickwork of the hotel in order to fly the flags for the many different royals and royal dignitaries staying at Claridge’s. Another legendary royal tale was that a few days before a notable royal occasion, when a harassed diplomat telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the King, the response was “Certainly sir, but which one?”.

Sculptural seats positioned throughout the garden remind us that taking time to talk can change our perspective on the world. The RSPCA Garden - designed by Martyn Wilson, built by Landscape Associates. Featuring a contemporary structure akin to a wildlife observation hide, enabling views out into the space. A rill, framed from recycled plastic, flows through the garden, creating movement and sound. It cascades into a pool, providing a spot for quiet contemplation, as well as a source of water for wildlife. The whole space is enclosed by hedging and a canopy of native trees and shrubs, essential for birds and wildlife. the garden hopes to inspire visitors to mark the RSPCA’s 200th birthday by creating outdoor spaces for all creatures to share.

For the first time in over a decade, Ascot Racecourse has unveiled a new look and feel for its annual Style Guide, which has been renamed The Royal Ascot Lookbook.

This year sees the British racing institution take a new direction, producing the Royal Ascot Lookbook 2023. The inspirational editorial comprises six fashion edits: Luxe, Tailoring, Pre-Loved & Rental, Vintage, High Street and Emerging Designer.

Why should I choose a steel-framed garden building option from Hi Tech?

Unlike many of our competitors, our structures are fabricated in-house using square-tube steel instead of the cheaper C profiles. This means that our buildings are better able to withstand the strongest English winds and storms without creaks and structural movement. Because we fabricate the structure in-house, we also have control over the fabrication schedule, design, ease of assembly and build quality, and thus ensure that the job built ‘right first time’.

The steel structure provides a rigid framework for subsequent

fit-out by traditional trades, enabling a high level of fit and finish of walls and windows. This also means that future maintenance or building amendment does not require specialist skills, material or equipment. The structural integrity of the steel frame structure means that buildings can be produced with larger, open span widths. RED AND YELLOW STEEL DOOR FRAMES BY CLEMENT CHOSEN FOR THIS EXCEPTIONAL LONDON HOME

Clement Windows Group has manufactured brightly coloured red and yellow steel door frames for a stunning South London home.

Hannah Cecil-Harden is a director at de Gournay, a family business founded by her father, Claud Cecil Gurney. De Gournay makes exquisite hand-painted and embroidered wallcoverings and the company’s work adorns some of the finest buildings in the world.

Hannah recently decided to reconfigure her London property to

accommodate her growing family and the basement was turned into a playroom with adjoining utility and bathroom. The walls of the playroom are decorated in a beautiful hand-painted wallpaper scene of London.

Having worked with Hannah previously, Clement was approached to manufacture the new steel doors included within the designs for this space. Hannah wanted the steel frames to be painted to match the vibrant colours included in the wallpaper.

The steel frames to the exterior are polyester powder painted RAL 9004 Signal Black on the outside and RAL 1016 Sulfer Yellow on the inside, while the interior doors are painted in the same yellow on the playroom side and RAL 3005 Wine Red on the utility and bathroom side.
