Esperance has continued to remain in a winter weather pattern, with the occasional day of sunshine, and plenty of opportunities to go fishing.

The colder water temperatures that we see at this time of year have continued to bring some of our favourites, with fishing for species such as squid, salmon, and whiting being highly successful.

Jetty fishing in town at the moment has seen squid going to 45cm tubes, with the best times still being early morning or just late afternoon into the evening. Some of the best results have been achieved with squid jags baited with herring on a float, and also MELBOURNE squid jigs in 3.5 size. Most beaches are also providing plenty of herring and flathead.

Bandy Creek Boat harbour is still yielding plenty of small herring, skippy and King George whiting. You can access the beach with a 2WD, and it’s a great spot for kids.

The bream lakes in town are currently holding plenty of water, which means you have to search a bit more to find the fish. However, the results have made the effort worthwhile, with plenty of fish over 40cm.

Image courtesy of @lachy_warren Boat fishing in the bay has been very successful when the weather has permitted, with anglers regularly getting their limit of squid. Sand whiting and herring are also in the mix. Those anglers willing to travel a bit further are encountering plenty of nannygai at 50cm+, breaksea cod up to 3kg, and plenty of small samsonfish and yellowtail kings. FISHING IN AUGUST In the coming weeks the water temperatures will remain cold, which will see a continuation of the squid and whiting fishing. Salmon will continue to school up as they chase the baitfish in closer. Mulloway and gummy sharks will become more prolific too, as they also come to feed in close. • Established in 1986, Southern Sports and Tackle specializes in the supply and servicing of fishing equipment. Roses Beach to the west and Munglinup Beach, and if you’re heading east the best places still Alexander Bay, Wharton Beach, and Poison Creek. A standard paternoster rig with a pilchard is always good for success. If you want to throw lures, the Samaki Flash 35g and 55g have been catching their share, along with the traditional Halco Twisties.

Other species being caught from the beach include good numbers of gummy sharks, with a few samples being over 20kg. The best beaches have still been Thomas River, Dunns Rock and 14 Mile.
