I had a bloke ask me about one of my fishing spots the other day.

My work has changed and I’m not able to get up there as often as I would like. I’m also bone lazy, which doesn’t help; once there was a time I would move heaven and NSW to take the boat out but those days are gone.

So old mate thought that since I wouldn’t be dropping onto the spot, I wouldn’t mind giving him the drum.

don’t give away fishing spots except in situations like a zombie uprising or an All Blacks loss. A little loss of motivation is not the situation that demands a giveaway.

Part of the reason that spots are guarded closer than something that’s very close, is that in most cases the finding of a fishing hole demands many hours, if not days and in some cases years, of on-theground research to identify them. There are occasions where I’ve read of a spot somewhere and dropped onto it, or watched a video and managed to run it in super slow-mo in order to identify the spot old mate is attempting to hide, but in general all my spots have come about through blood, sweat and beers. Putting both brain cells into action and identifying what characteristics make up a honey-hole for jack, barra, bream, flathead, whatever... And when that plan comes together and you get a result, it’s a great feeling.

That’s part of the reason why I hesitate getting a guide to take me out, or getting a charter. The joy of fishing for me is not just catching fish, but catching them using the tools I have at my disposal – blunt, rusty and worn out though they may be.

And I’m not about to give them up for nothing. Perhaps a box of Milton mangoes, but not for nothing.
