A note from Fig

Our local community is buzzing with the energy of passionate individuals who dared to chase their dreams and share them with us. As we approach the end of the year, let's come together and make it a memorable one, setting the stage for a fabulous 2024. Supporting our local shops is a win-win. They offer both in-person and online shopping experiences, and don't forget their marvelous gift-wrapping skills! Mark your calendars for exciting shopping events like The Junior League's Holiday Market, Vista Lights, Forest Acres' Sweet Seasons, and Fa La La La La in Five Points. You'll be amazed at how efficiently you can complete your shopping list at these events. Let's not forget our non-profit organizations, relying on our generosity for year-end giving. Every contribution matters, and if you're unsure about the

“perfect” gift, consider making a donation in someone's name. Lastly, with the holiday season comes merrymaking and engagements. We're fortunate to have exceptional planners, caterers, and venues that can turn your celebration into a dream come true. Fig owes its existence to the businesses and non-profits that choose to advertise with us and to BlueCross BlueShield, our Small Business Champion. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to them and to our team of incredible designers, photographers, copywriters, and project managers who bring this publication to life. The heart of hometown

When making your holiday shopping list, Forest Acres should top any and everyone’s list of shopping destinations. The city's tree-lined streets and warm neighborhood feel have always been synonymous with charm—but lately, Forest Acres is having a moment. Major national retailers from HomeGoods to Sephora and J. Crew Factory recently opened their doors inside the city’s premier shopping destination, Trenholm Plaza. Add in Cardinal Crossing and you'll find a host of new dessert eateries, boutique gyms, and restauranteurs from Charleston and Columbia coming to the city to make their mark and expand the food scene. As for Christmas shopping, you can still buzz around the city and almost exclusively shop small. Forest Acres is home to the only local toy store in The Midlands, Be Beep. They've been a staple on Forest Drive since 1988 and as a bonus, all gift wrapping is complimentary! Children's boutique clothier Duck Duck Goose has set up shop next door to make it easy to give something special to all your favorite littles. Pop into Fleet Feet to grab something for Dad as well. Then head across Forest Drive to Kudzu Bakery and Market to find the perfect hostess gift from their collection of artisan kitchen and home items; while you're there, go ahead and order that holiday cake and grab a few appetizers and spreads for your holiday table too. Round out your day at Trenholm Plaza with Kendra Scott or Lululemon for that teen in your life (or yourself!), or check out Anthropologie, Scout & Molly’s, ivy & leo, or Fab'rik. To really treat loved ones with luxury this holiday, pop into Coplon’s on Forest Drive for designer style. And finally, with the mall redevelopment on the horizon—it’s safe to say Forest Acres has arrived. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Tuesday, November 28 Sweet Seasons kicks off the holidays with the beloved Christmas Tree Lighting, live music, food vendors, carolers, and an appearance from Santa. To solidify Forest Acres as one of the region’s top shopping and dining destinations, the city’s Beautification Foundation recently commissioned local artist, Dream a Little Art’s Leah Richardson for its utility wrapping project. She painted custom artwork to capture that happy “Forest Acres feel” that can now be found up and down Forest Drive in a collective effort to bring public art to the city’s main corridor.

Mary Roe, Palmetto Trail Executive Director

Thirty years of the Palmetto Trail In the heart of South Carolina lies the Palmetto Trail, a magical odyssey through nature that has been decades in the making. Established in 1989 by the nonprofit Palmetto Conservation, this trail system is a testament to the state's natural beauty and a tribute to its cultural heritage. Stretching across the diverse terrain of South Carolina, the Palmetto Trail is a remarkable network of pathways that invites both avid hikers and families seeking outdoor adventure.

Awendaw. Still, the vision to expand doesn't stop there. To reach 500 miles, the Palmetto Trail will one day connect the entire state of South Carolina with hiking and bike paths that wind through forests, across swamps and mountain ridges, beside lakes, and into small towns and big cities. The 'Connect the Trail' campaign is in full swing, requiring an estimated $20 million to achieve this dream of becoming the state's longest pedestrian and bicycle trail.

The Palmetto Trail spans an impressive 380 miles, connecting the Blue Ridge Mountains in the upstate's Walhalla to the Lowcountry's coastal haven of

As the vision of the Palmetto Trail continues to grow, the mission of the Palmetto Conservation is firmly planted: to foster appreciation

for South Carolina's natural and cultural resources, making outdoor opportunities accessible to all, regardless of age, ability, or socioeconomic circumstances. It's a place where the outdoors genuinely is for everyone—where the whispers of history and the wonders of nature converge to create an unparalleled experience. As the Palmetto Trail continues to weave its way through the state, it leaves an indelible mark for generations to come, offering a timeless invitation to explore the diverse beauty that South Carolina holds.

Hitting the trail The outdoors are for everyone; luckily, South Carolina has some of the most impressive spaces nationwide. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a first-timer, there's room for everyone. Here are a few things to consider before your next big journey. DRESS FOR THE ELEMENTS In a state that sees all four seasons, ensure you're prepared for the elements. Dress in layers and bring appropriate footwear. Use a non-toxic bug spray to protect yourself, and don't forget to pack your binoculars! It's always a good idea to pack an emergency kit, too. A "LEAVE NO TRACE" APPROACH A day in the great outdoors can leave your lips parched and your stomach growling, so make sure you bring enough food and water. No matter what you munch on, adopt a "Leave No Trace" mindset and dispose of trash appropriately. Whatever you pack in, make sure to pack out as a courtesy to Mother Nature and your fellow hikers. Scan to see the Palmetto Trail in action!

TRAIL ETIQUETTE Although your time outside might be met with peaceful solitude, you might run into fellow nature enthusiasts while on the trail. Even the most seasoned hikers can forget trail etiquette, so here are a few things to keep in mind: Hikers and Bikers Technically, bikers should yield to hikers on the trail due to their maneuverability, but because of their speed, most hikers tend to yield to a biker. If you are a biker, always call out when approaching the hiker and warn them if more bikers are behind you. As a hiker, always be aware of your surroundings. Hikers and Horses Because horses are larger and generally less predictable, always yield to a horse. Talk calmly and give as much distance as possible as the horse and rider pass you. Hikers and Hikers If hiking in a group, always file in line single-fashion as other hikers pass you. Hikers walking uphill have the right of way, as they have a smaller field of vision and tend to be in a "hiking rhythm" to keep their pace while they climb. Hiking With Dogs or Children If hiking with dogs, ensure the trail you are heading to allows canines. Keep your dog on a leash and make sure they can obey basic commands such as "sit" and "stay." Don't forget to pack water, treats, and pet waste bags. When hiking with the kids, lead by example. Start with easier trails that are appropriate for your child's physical abilities. Even while on the trail, pack crowd-pleasing activities that the kids will love while you rest. OTHER ACTIVITIES Wandering the great outdoors doesn't have to be done solely on foot. Opt for a horseback or mountain bike ride for a thrill you won’t soon forget. Or, remember that camping is its own adventure if you're looking for an extended stay outside.

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others

Fig Columbia Readers, At a recent Sistercare staff meeting, I placed two blank sheets of paper before each team member. On the first sheet, I asked everyone to write down WHAT they do at Sistercare. I watched as everyone diligently penned their various job responsibilities—managing the emergency shelter, providing clinical counseling, assisting with orders of protection, and more. The responses were straightforward and to the point. Next, I asked them to toss everything they had just written— ball it up and toss it—and on the second sheet of paper, write down WHY they are with Sistercare. What is your WHY? Their responses were incredible: • I grew up seeing my mother abused and scared. I want

to make a difference for her and for others who have experienced abuse.

• For the survivor who calls every year to thank me for

saving her life, now 14 years ago. I want to help survivors not only survive but thrive.

When you know your “why,” your “what” is that much more impactful because you’re embracing your purpose. There is no doubt that Sistercare team members know their “why.” Your “why” might be your daughter who was a victim of dating violence in college and too scared to tell you, your best friend who found the strength to share that her husband abused her for years, or your coworker who often came to the office with unexplained bruises. Your “why” might even be your own experience with domestic violence. I hope you will join Sistercare in shattering the silence and breaking the stigma associated with intimate partner violence. No one deserves to be abused, and it takes all of us embracing our “why” to change the narrative surrounding domestic violence. Sincerely,

• For Wynter Straw and Dominique Walker who were

both recently killed by their abusers. I do this for them and other survivors who never had the chance to live free from fear.

• Because I want to end victim-blaming.

Leah Wicevic Executive Director

• For my daughter and other children who deserve a

safe and loving home without domestic violence.

A sustainable gift guide 'Tis the season for giving, and make this year a sustainable one! The long-awaited holidays are filled with quality time spent with loved ones near and far. As we search for collective action for a healthier planet, it's especially important to pursue a sustainable holiday season. Think outside the box this season—not only with what you gift, but with how you give it. Here are some ideas for creative gift wrapping that will wow your loved ones as they unwrap their special present, as well as gifts that break the mold of traditional giving:

Reusable Wrapping Use a tote bag • Utilize tote bags, a versatile and reusable option for wrapping gifts. • Choose bags made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton or jute. A wrapping re-do • Repurpose scarves as gift wrap for a touch of elegance and reuse. • Encourage recipients to reuse the scarf as an accessory or clothing item. Re-use the news • Give old newspapers a new life by using them as wrapping paper. • Decorate with a pop of color using recycled ribbons or twine. Call on Mother Nature • Opt for twine made from natural fibers for a rustic and eco-friendly touch. • Add sprigs of pine, dried flowers, or leaves for an organic and charming presentation.

74

Make Memories That Last Gift an experience • Offer the gift of memories by giving experiences instead of physical items. • Consider tickets to a movie, a play, or a concert for a fun and enjoyable outing. • Plan a shopping trip, a dinner date, or an afternoon coffee to spend quality time together. • Explore local holiday markets and create lasting memories while supporting local artisans.

Craft a make-your-own voucher • Create personalized vouchers offering services or activities you can do for your loved ones. • Offer to cook a special meal, organize a movie night, or provide a relaxing massage. Bake homemade treats • Bake delicious homemade treats like cookies, jams, or sauces to show your love. • Present them in reusable containers, encouraging sustainability beyond the gift itself. Make sure to share the recipe!

The Art of Snail Mail In this digital age, the art of handwritten letters often takes a backseat to emails and instant messages. Still, there's something incredibly personal about receiving a letter in the mail. This holiday season, rekindle the tradition of sending handwritten letters to those who have made a positive impact on your life. Here's a guide to get you started on your “snail mail” journey:

Who should make the mailing list? Think outside the box when writing a letter of gratitude this season. Whether it's someone you've been meaning to reach out to for awhile now or a loved one you're in regular contact with, the gesture is all the same when that piece of thoughtful mail arrives. Consider mailing a card to old teachers, mail carriers, a boss or co-worker, old friends, family members, or mentors.

Begin with gratitude Prompt: “Dear , I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for...” Share a memory Prompt: “One memory that always brings a smile to my face is when we...” Highlight their impact Prompt: “Your wisdom and guidance have been a guiding light in my life. I often reflect on the time you...” Express your love Prompt: “As the holiday season approaches, I send you my warmest wishes for...”

75

Gifts That Keep on Giving As we celebrate the holiday season, embrace the idea of gifts that not only bring joy in the moment, but contribute to a better and more sustainable world in the long run. Think beyond the traditional gifts and consider these impactful ways to make your gifts keep on giving: Donate to a nonprofit in their name In the spirit of giving, make a donation in your loved ones name to a nonprofit that they care about. For causes that are close to their heart, this gesture goes a long way in creating a lasting impact for a cause they are passionate about.

Scan the QR code to see a list of nonprofits in Columbia. Shop locally for sustainable impact Gifts that are made by local artisans and businesses support the wonderful community in which we live. Not only does it support creative talent, but it promotes a more sustainable lifestyle. By shopping locally, we can all work to reduce our carbon footprint, preserve Columbia's unique community, and encourage economic growth for local businesses.

Environmental and economic benefits abound • When shopping locally, there is a reduction in transportation emissions due to shorter travel distances for products. • You support local farmers and artisans directly when shopping locally, who often employ sustainable practices. • Shopping locally has a huge impact. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, about $68 stays in the local economy, compared to only $43 when spent at a non-local chain store (Civic Economics Study).
