The New Normal for Music Lessons It’s been an interesting few months for the Music Heroes tutors who would normally spend their days visiting local primary and secondary schools; delivering one to one, small group and whole class instrument lessons. Outside of school hours, we were all busy with private lessons in our own studios and in students’ homes. As with most things in life following the COVID-19 pandemic, all of that has changed. We had to quickly get to grips with online teaching. At the outset there were hours of research into the best online platform; then followed many more hours experimenting with microphones, webcams and screen positions! In addition, new safeguarding policies were drawn up along with guidance for parents and students on how to get the most out of their lessons through a screen! It’s not always been straight forward and there has been the odd occasion where the good old internet just hasn’t been up to the job but, on the whole; online lessons have been a huge success. For both tutors and students, online lessons feel “normal” now and if there is one thing we can take out of this crisis, it’s that a new way of teaching has opened up for us. We can now confidently accept students from any part of the world! We don’t know when we will be allowed to teach in schools again or whether it will be acceptable to have students in our studios again any time soon. For the time being, we will continue to teach online. We’re taking on new students and once measures are relaxed, we look forward to meeting those students in person (or not, if they would prefer to continue with online lessons). I’m happy to report that graded exams will be taking place, with social distancing measures, in July. We have been amazed to see so many of our students flourish under these unusual circumstances. Many have been able to practise more than usual and that is evident in the progress that has been made between lessons. Some students have even booked in for several lessons a week! The most amazing thing for us as tutors has been to be able see the faces of our students and their parents. Keeping in touch and being able to have some contact with the outside world, even if just for 30 minutes a week, has been so beneficial to students; offering something familiar for our young students; many of whom have struggled with all the changes to routine. Also, parents have reported that being able to observe or listen in to our lessons has given them a better understanding of what is expected of the students and how they can help them practise in between lessons.

Most of our tutors are professional musicians and restrictions have, of course, prevented them from gigging, However, we did take the opportunity to create a music video, and recorded our own lockdown cover of Hey Jude. This can be found on our youtube channel and has been very popular with our students. We’ve also been uploading demonstration videos of the songs that we teach. These too, can be found on youtube.
