GOD’SCORNER

by Gertrude M. Puelicher

ISAIAH, INSPIRED PATRIARCH and prophet of the Old Testament, threw us a lifeline when he said, “Behold the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.” A lifeline is important only if one grabs it and holds it fast, whether it is from a national or individual standpoint, and it would seem that a lifeline is what we need in today’s world.

The problem is how does one connect with the lifeline? In other words, how does one reach this God whose help we obviously need? If your kitchen stove has a pilot light, you don’t need a match to produce a flame. All you do is turn on the gas. It contacts the pilot light, and the burner is instantaneously flooded with a blue flame. It’s as simple as that. Contact is the key word.

Within each of us is a pilot light, a divine spark that is never extinguished. We may be totally unaware of its presence, we may completely ignore it, but, nevertheless, it is present within us, waiting patiently to be contacted. The instant, however, that we make the connection, we are flooded with warmth of love, an assurance of the presence of a Power greater than man. We have caught the lifeline and all we need do is hang on to it.

There has never been a time in our country when we have had greater need to contact God. Sometimes one wonders whether our image hasn’t become one of a crime dominated, drug addicted, sex obsessed country. It is an appalling thought.

What has happened to “America, The Beautiful?” “The land of the free and the home of the brave?” “This is my country” with the emphasis on the my? “The Stars and Stripes forever?”

What has happened to the American home, that bulwark of security for little and big children? What has happened to family togetherness, a warm circle of affection that holds parents and their children close? What is happening to the importance of marriage vows?

Doesn’t it seem to you that there is great need of our making contact with that divine spark within each of us? Does it seem possible that anyone could be content with mere humanhood? One would think that soulnessness could be a very lonely existence. Are we blind to the truth that youth, despite its flamboyance, needs love and security and faith in something? Patriotism has become old-fashioned. Family life has become disintegrated. Morals are a matter of individual opinion. Our last resource, which ironically enough should be our first, is the divine spark within us.

Must we not, before it is too late, turn to the Father within in gratitude that his hand is not shortened that it cannot save nor his ear heavy that it cannot hear? Do we have any other option?

Why are we waiting? The time to make the contact is now. Rejoice, because fruitage from that contact with the Spirit within can only result in a great welling up of gratitude for the peace, harmony and love that are flooding us. n
