DESIGNING NATURE WITH

Having plants inside your home doesn’t just look good it makes us feel good as well. When we get in touch with nature, we reduce mental fatigue and stress while increasing our relaxation and self-esteem. Plants also clean our indoor air by absorbing toxins, increasing humidity and producing oxygen. But how can you incorporate nature into the home so that it becomes a natural part of the furnishings? This issue we look at a villa designed by the award-winning architectural and interior design company, UDesign, that is built around the central theme of a hanging garden. UDesign created a Zen-inspired garden on every level of the house using a central atrium rising more than eight metres from the basement to the top floor. This hanging garden proved to be quite an engineering feat. Metal cables and an automatic pulley system allow specially made stainless steel pots to be set to the exact level needed for pruning, watering, and an occasional play on heights. The cables also allow for illumination, turning the hanging garden into a magical night-time spectacle. The basement atrium was created as a place for reflection, spacious enough for a garden where you can sit down and relax. Inspired by the movie Avatar, UDesign took the concept of a magical centrepiece tree and gave it a Japanese twist, using a red miniature maple tree which provides a dramatic colour accent. This natural

element extends beyond the garden onto the walls in the form of moss panels. One of them, circular with integrated LED lighting, brings even more greenery and light into the space, reminding us of a full moon rising over a tranquil landscape. Being an ancient Asian art form, bonsai inspires us to contemplate, and the rest of the room is designed accordingly. Simple Benaldo sofas and yellow Brabbu armchairs sit on a carpet with a basic geometrical pattern. No television set here: this is for conversation, reading, playing chess or just looking at the miniature garden and reflecting on everyday life, as intended by the ancient masters of bonsai. Two terracotta warriors guard the room, adding to the feeling of tranquility and security. The zen feel is carried through the entire house, and this distinct style combined with high-end, contemporary pieces of furniture and lighting creates a sumptuous and relaxing environment. Oriental and Mediterranean style might not be an obvious union, but it certainly makes for a fascinating design aesthetic. Tener plantas en el interior de nuestros hogares no es sólo un recurso decorativo, sino que además nos hace sentir bien. El contacto con la naturaleza reduce la fatiga mental y el estrés al tiempo que nos ayuda a sentirnos más relajados y mejora nuestra autoestima. Las plantas también purifican el aire interior ya que absorben toxinas, aumentan la humedad y producen oxígeno. Pero, ¿cómo se puede incorporar la naturaleza en el hogar de forma que se convierta en un elemento natural integrado en el mobiliario? Precisamente encontramos dicha fusión en una villa diseñada por el galardonado estudio de diseño de interiores y arquitectura, UDesign, construida en torno a un jardín colgante como elemento central. UDesign ha creado un jardín zen en cada planta de la vivienda en base a un atrio central que se eleva más de ocho metros desde la planta sótano hasta la planta superior. Este jardín colgante ha resultado ser toda una proeza de ingeniería. El cableado de acero y un sistema automático de poleas permiten que las jardineras de acero inoxidable especialmente diseñadas se coloquen en el nivel exacto idóneo para la poda, riego y manipulación ocasional de la altura de las plantas. Dicho cableado permite igualmente modificar la iluminación, convirtiendo el jardín colgante en un mágico espectáculo nocturno. El atrio en la planta sótano ha sido creado como un espacio para la reflexión, lo suficientemente espacioso para disponer de un jardín donde te puedes sentar y relajarte. Inspirándose en la película Avatar, UDesign adoptó el concepto de un árbol mágico como pieza central y le dio un toque japonés, utilizando para ello un bonsái de arce rojo que produce un espectacular efecto de color. Este elemento natural se extiende más allá del jardín hasta las paredes en forma de paneles de musgo. Uno de ellos, circular y con iluminación LED integrada, aporta aún un mayor toque de verdor e iluminación al espacio, evocando una luna llena que se eleva sobre un tranquilo paisaje. Al tratarse de una antigua forma de arte asiático, el bonsái nos invita a la reflexión, habiendo sido diseñado el resto de la estancia en línea con ello. Sencillos sofás Bonaldo y sillones Brabbu en tonos amarillos descansan sobre una alfombra de diseño geométrico básico. Aquí no hay televisión: este espacio debe invitar a conversar, leer, jugar al ajedrez o simplemente contemplar el jardín en miniatura y reflexionar sobre la vida cotidiana, tal y como pretendían los antiguos maestros del bonsái. La estancia está custodiada por dos guerreros de terracota que proporcionan aún una mayor sensación de tranquilidad y seguridad. La sensación “zen” se extiende por toda la casa, y este estilo único, en unión con un mobiliario e iluminación contemporáneos de alta gama, crean un ambiente suntuoso y relajante. Puede que el estilo oriental y el mediterráneo no sea una combinación muy lógica, pero indudablemente con ello se logra una estética de diseño fascinante.
