¶ Proposed road would cut through Blanchard Park

¶ A Civilian Climate Corps would serve many needs

Jay Blanchard Park is home to 84 acres of accessible trails, fields for sports and a connection to the Little Econlockhatchee River. Its beautiful scenery attracts residents, students and families from all over the Orlando area to spend a day outside. Rather than an open grassy field, this gem is narrow and long, allowing access to the 7.9-mile Little Econ Greenway Trail. The connection to the Little Econ River allows for a relaxing picnic by the riverbank as well as fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Aside from benefiting humans, it is a special home to the animals and plants who reside in it. There have been hundreds of birds, fish and terrestrial animals spotted. This striking scenery is in the hands of the county representatives, as they are determining if the park stays as beautiful as we know it today. Currently, there is debate on constructing the Richard Crotty Parkway through a boundary of the park. This four-lane slab of concrete would disrupt the ecosystem as well as the residents who enjoy spending their time in nature. As a college student who spends their free time enjoying the fresh air at Jay Blanchard Park, I ask us all to consider if this road is necessary. With all of the bikers, fishers and families who utilize the beautiful scenery, it would pose a threat to their safety. The ecosystem is also at risk. This would increase air pollution, contaminate the groundwater, and disrupt the wildlife. Is it really worth it?

Imagine being a college graduate who is struggling to find an entry-level job that allows them to address the threat of climate change. For many young adults entering the workforce, this is the reality. The Civilian Climate Corps would address this issue. The creation of a modern CCC would create accessible training opportunities and a plethora of jobs for young adults that specifically address the threat of climate change and strengthen our protection of natural lands. This program is modeled after the CCC program that was established by FDR, which employed 3 million men in its nine-year run. The newer version, which was proposed by Biden’s administration, aims to spend $10 billion, which will help create 150,000 to 200,000 jobs in total. As a young college student, I have participated in the AmeriCorps program, which provides a similar experience to what the Civilian Climate Corps aims to do. Nothing has helped me further my growth and knowledge more than getting to work alongside professionals in the field to address issues near to my heart, issues that we all have begun to face more frequently. It is imperative that the CCC be included in the Reconciliation Package; our youth will change the future, if we just let them have the opportunity.

¶ Central Florida Northrop Grumman workers protest upcoming federal vaccine mandate Workers at a Central Florida aerospace manufacturing facility are protesting an upcoming vaccination mandate for all federal employees and contractors. According to a report from Fox 35, a group of workers at a Melbourne Northrop Grumman plant are protesting the requirement that they get vaccinated. The workers gathered outside the facility on Monday morning to say that they believe the mandate is “unconstitutional.” For the record, mandatory vaccination has been found constitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in repeated instances. In 1905, the court found that local governments were within their rights to enforce vaccine mandates after a Massachusetts pastor fought a mandatory smallpox vaccination. They extended that power to schools in 1922, finding that public schools could deny entry to children whose parents refused to have them vaccinated. These precedents will no doubt be discussed ad nauseum while school districts and state governments continue to squabble over requirements to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. President Joe Biden pointed to the precedents in defending his federal requirements. “Folks, vaccination requirements work and there’s nothing new about it. They’ve been around for decades. We’ve been living with these requirements throughout our lives,” he said. “Students, health care professionals, our troops have been required to see vaccination for everything from polio to measles to mumps to rubella.” — Alex Galbraith

¶ Harry Styles’ recent Orlando concert among events being questioned over possible ‘vaccine passport’ ban violations A Florida task force is looking into whether certain events and venues violated the state’s ban on so-called “vaccine passports.” That prohibition recently went into effect and the state has already rounded up a host of potential offenders, including Harry Styles’ recent show at the Amway Center. According to a report from the Orlando Sentinel, the

Florida Department of Health has compiled a list of 120 events, venues, businesses and government entities that may have run afoul of Florida’s law barring private businesses from instituting a vaccination requirement and verifying it via a check of documentation. The paper says that several Central Florida institutions are on the list, including Orange County Government, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the Amway Center. Styles’ concert was an event that was singled out individually for potential violations, in addition to the probe into other events at the Amway Center. Orange County Government likely made the list for instituting a vaccination requirement among county employees. Gov. Ron DeSantis has threatened massive fines for the county, multiplied quickly by the number of employees who work for the local government. Dr. Phillips and Harry Styles’ concert both instituted a policy requiring a recent negative COVID-19 test to attend shows. Vaccinated people could opt out of this requirement by showing proof of vaccination. This apparent workaround was still too close for the DOH, however, who flagged both the concert and the venue as possible violators anyway. In addition, the DOH is looking into several cruise lines, who by and large have ignored the passport ban. Several cruise lines began asking for proof of vaccination following a ruling in favor of Norwegian Cruise Line that exempted them from the ban. That ruling is being appealed by the state of Florida. A legal challenge to the entire law is being heard this week. A Sarasota craft store with an elderly clientele is suing the state, with the owner claiming she hasn’t been able to open safely because of the restriction. — AG

¶ Nearly 57,000 Floridians have died of COVID-19, per report Florida is nearing 57,000 resident deaths from COVID19 since the pandemic started in early 2020, according to a report released last Friday by the state Department of Health. As of late last week, the state totaled 56,667 deaths, up from 55,299 in a report issued the previous week. Lags in reporting make it difficult to track when the additional deaths occurred. The report also showed that Florida has topped 3.6 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic started. As of last Thursday, the total was 3,601,755 cases,

up from 3,576,571 in a report the prior week. The Department of Health said 72 percent of Floridians ages 12 or older had received at least one dose of COVID19 vaccine as of last Thursday. Vaccination rates ranged from 92 percent of the people in Miami-Dade County to 32 percent in Holmes County. — The News Service of Florida

¶ Orlando felons’ rights activist Desmond Meade has civil rights restored Desmond Meade, a former drug dealer who has garnered international accolades after leading the drive to pass a 2018 constitutional amendment to restore voting rights for felons, has had his civil rights restored by the Florida Board of Executive Clemency. The move stemmed from changes made by the clemency board earlier this year. The restoration of civil rights for Meade, who recently was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship “genius” grant, means that the Orlando votingrights advocate can register to vote, serve on juries and run for public office. The action by the board came after Gov. Ron DeSantis twice rejected Meade’s requests for a full pardon. Meade, who received a law degree from Florida International University but was unable to practice law in Florida because of his decades-old felony convictions, called the restoration of his civil rights “another chapter in the journey, another example of perseverance” in a Twitter video posted last weekend. “It’s not a pardon, but it’s definitely a step,” said Meade, executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. “I can apply to The Florida Bar now. I can get a house. I can run for office if I want to run for office.” The Florida Board of Executive Clemency is made up of the governor, attorney general, agriculture commissioner and chief financial officer, and the governor’s approval is required for pardons and restoration of civil rights. At DeSantis’ urging, the board in March approved a series of changes to the clemency process and made it easier for felons who have paid court-ordered fines, fees and restitution to have their civil rights restored without hearings before the board. The new clemency rules eliminated five- and seven-year waiting periods imposed by former Gov. Rick Scott, former Attorney General Pam Bondi and other clemency board members in 2011. — NSF

BY JENNY DEAM, PROPUBLICA

W

hat first struck Nathaniel Osborn when he and his wife took their son, Seth, to the emergency room this summer was how packed the waiting room was for a Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Florida hospital’s emergency room was so crowded there weren’t enough chairs for the family to all sit as they waited. And waited. Hours passed and 12-year-old Seth’s condition worsened, his body quivering from the pain shooting across his lower belly. Osborn said his wife asked why it was taking so long to be seen. A nurse rolled her eyes and muttered, “COVID.” Seth was finally diagnosed with appendicitis more than six hours after arriving at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health North Hospital in Stuart in late July. Around midnight, he was taken by ambulance to a sister hospital about a half-hour away that was better equipped to perform pediatric emergency surgery, his father said. But by the time the doctor operated in the early morning hours, Seth’s appendix had burst — a potentially fatal complication. As the nation’s hospitals fill and emergency rooms overflow with critically ill COVID-19 patients, it is the non-COVID-19 patients, like Seth, who have become collateral damage.

They, too, need emergency care, but the sheer number of COVID-19 cases is crowding them out. Treatment has often been delayed as ERs scramble to find a bed that may be hundreds of miles away. Some health officials now worry about looming ethical decisions. Last week, Idaho activated a “crisis standard of care,” which one official described as a “last resort.” It allows overwhelmed hospitals to ration care, including “in rare cases, ventilator (breathing machines) or intensive care unit (ICU) beds may need to be used for those who are most likely to survive, while patients who are not likely to survive may not be able to receive one,” the state’s website said. The federal government’s latest data shows Alabama is at 100% of its intensive care unit capacity, with Texas, Georgia, Mississippi and Arkansas at more than 90% ICU capacity. Florida is just under 90%. It’s the COVID-19 cases that are dominating. In Georgia, 62% of the ICU beds are now filled with just COVID-19 patients. In Texas, the percentage is nearly half. To have so many ICU beds pressed into service for a single diagnosis is “unheard of,” said Dr. Hasan Kakli, an emergency room physician at Bellville Medical Center in Bellville, Texas, about an hour from Houston. “It’s approaching apocalyptic.” In Texas, state data released Sept. 15 showed there were only 319 adult and 104 pediatric staffed ICU beds available across a state of 29 million people. Hospitals need to hold some ICU beds for other patients, such as those recovering from major surgery or other critical conditions such as stroke, trauma or heart failure.

“This is not just a COVID issue,” said Dr. Normaliz Rodriguez, pediatric emergency physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. “This is an everyone issue.” While the latest hospital crisis echoes previous pandemic spikes, there are troubling differences this time around. Before, localized COVID-19 hot spots led to bed shortages, but there were usually hospitals in the region not as affected that could accept a transfer. Now, as the highly contagious Delta variant envelops swaths of low-vaccination states all at once, it becomes harder to find nearby hospitals that are not slammed. “Wait times can now be measured in days,” said Darrell Pile, CEO of the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council, which helps coordinate patient transfers across a 25-county region. Recently, Dr. Cedric Dark, a Houston emergency physician and assistant professor of emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, said he saw a critically ill COVID-19 patient waiting in the emergency room for an ICU bed to open. The doctor worked eight hours, went home and came in the next day. The patient was still waiting. -----------------------Holding a seriously ill patient in an emergency room while waiting for an in-patient bed to open is known as boarding. The longer the wait, the more dangerous it can be for the patient, studies have found.

Suddenly the numbers of hospitalized children are on the rise.

(continued from page 17) Not only do patients ultimately end up staying in the hospital or the ICU longer, some research suggests that long waits for a bed will worsen their condition and may increase the risk of in-hospital death. That’s what happened six weeks ago in Texas. On Aug. 21, around 11:30 a.m., Michelle Puget took her adult son, Daniel Wilkinson, to the Bellville Medical Center’s emergency room as a pain in his abdomen became unbearable. “Mama,” he said, “take me to the hospital.” Wilkinson, a 46-year-old decorated Army veteran who did two tours of duty in Afghanistan, was ushered into an exam room about half an hour later. Kakli, the emergency room physician there, diagnosed gallstone pancreatitis, a serious but treatable condition that required a specialist to perform a surgical procedure and an ICU bed. In other times, the transfer to a larger facility would be easy. But soon Kakli found himself on a frantic, six-hour quest to find a bed for his patient. Not only did he call hospitals across Texas, but he also tried Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Colorado. It was like throwing darts at a map and hoping to get lucky, he told ProPublica. But no one could or would take the transfer. By 2:30 p.m., Wilkinson’s condition was deteriorating. Kakli told Puget to come back to the hospital. “I have to tell you,” she said he told her, “Your son is a very, very sick man. If he doesn’t get this procedure he will die.” She began to weep. Two hours later, Wilkinson’s blood pressure was dropping, signaling his organs were failing, she said. Kakli went on Facebook and posted an all-caps plea to physician groups around the nation: “GETTING REJECTED BY ALL HOSPITALS IN TEXAS DUE TO NO ICU BEDS. PLEASE HELP. MESSAGE ME IF YOU HAVE A BED. PATIENT IS IN ER NOW. I AM THE ER DOC. WILL FLY ANYWHERE.” The doctor tried Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston for a second time. This time he found a bed. Around 7 p.m., Wilkinson, still conscious but in grave condition, was flown by helicopter to the hospital. He was put in a medically induced coma. Through the night and into the next morning, medical teams worked to stabilize him enough to perform the procedure. They could not. Doctors told his family the internal damage was catastrophic. “We made the decision we had to let him go,” Puget said.

Time of death: 1:37 p.m. Aug. 22 — 26 hours after he first arrived in the emergency room. The story was first reported by CBS News. Kakli told ProPublica last week he still sometimes does the math in his head: It should have been 40 minutes from diagnosis in Bellville to transfer to the ICU in Houston. “If he had 40 minutes to wait instead of six hours, I strongly believe he would have had a different outcome.” -----------------------Another difference with the latest surge is how it’s affecting children. Last year, schools were closed, and children were more protected because they were mostly isolated at home. In fact, children’s hospitals were often so empty during previous spikes they opened beds to adult patients. Now, families are out more. Schools have reopened, some with mask mandates, some without. Vaccines are not yet available to those under 12. Suddenly the numbers of hospitalized children are on the rise, setting up the same type of competition for resources between young COVID-19 patients and those with other illnesses such as new onset diabetes, trauma, pneumonia or appendicitis. Dr. Rafael Santiago, a pediatric emergency physician in Central Florida, said at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, the average number of children coming into the emergency room is around 130 per day. During the lockdown last spring, that number dropped to 33. Last month — “the busiest month ever” — the average daily number of children in the emergency room was 160. Pediatric transfers are not yet as fraught as adult ones, Santiago said, but it does take more calls than it once did to secure a bed. Seth Osborn, the 12-year-old whose appendix burst after a long wait, spent five days and four nights in the hospital as doctors pumped his body full of antibiotics to stave off infection from the rupture. The typical hospitalization for a routine appendectomy is about 24 hours. The initial hospital bill for the stay came to more than $48,000, Nathaniel Osborn said. Although insurance paid for most of it, he said the family still borrowed against its house to cover the more than $5,000 in outof-pocket costs so far. While the hospital system where Seth was treated declined to comment about his case because of patient

privacy laws, it did email a statement about the strain the pandemic is creating. “Since July 2021, we have seen a tremendous spike in COVID-19 patients needing care and hospitalization. In mid-August, we saw the highest number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the Cleveland Clinic Florida region, a total of 395 COVID-19 patients in four hospitals. Those hospitals have approximately 1,000 total beds,” the email to ProPublica said. “We strongly encourage vaccination. Approximately 90% of our patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 are unvaccinated.” On Sunday, the Washington Post reported that a hospital in Alabama called 43 others across three states before finding a bed for Ray DeMonia, a critically ill heart patient who later died. In his obituary his family wrote: “In honor of Ray, please get vaccinated if you have not, in an effort to free up resources for non COVID related emergencies. … He would not want any other family to go through what his did.” Today, Seth is mostly recovered. “Twelve-year-old boys bounce back,” his father said. Still, the experience has left Nathaniel Osborn shaken. The high school history teacher said he likes to stay upbeat and apolitical in his social media musings, posting about Florida wildlife preservation and favorite books. But on Sept. 7, he tweeted: “My 12-year-old had appendicitis. The ER was overwhelmed with unvaccinated Covid patients and we had to wait 6+ hours. While waiting, his appendix ruptured and had to spend 5 days in hospital. … So yeah, your decision to not vaccinate does affect others.” It was retweeted 34,700 times, with 143,000 likes. Most comments were sympathetic and wished his child a speedy recovery. Some, though, went straight to hate, apparently triggered by his last line. He was attacked personally and accused of making up the story: “Good try with the guilt, jerk.” Osborn, who is vaccinated, as are his wife and son, told ProPublica he only shared Seth’s story on Twitter to encourage vaccinations. “I have no ill will towards the hospitals or the care received at either hospital,” he said. “But had these hospitals not been so crowded with COVID patients, we wouldn’t have had to wait so long and perhaps my son’s appendix would not have burst.” This story was originally published by ProPublica.

How did outsiders in Pensacola view the house?

The neighbors saw the house differently. Some definitely hated us, sometimes for good reason, but often because of their own stereotypes of who we were and what we were doing. A lot of the neighbors really liked us, though. We’d share food often with the older folks around the corner. I met my wife Lauren at 309. When our daughter was born, one of our neighbors brought us baby clothes. It was sweet, but also shows how we were definitely part of the community.

Talk about gathering the interviews and stories for the book. How did you and Aaron collaborate on the finished manuscript?

Scott Satterwhite looks back at Florida’s storied ‘punk house,’ the 309 BY MATTHEW MOY E R

T

The stories were gathered through an Oral History class at the university where I teach. A friend of mine, Jamin Wells, thought the stories from 309 would make for a good study with his class and asked if I could give him a diverse group of 309 alumni who could respond quickly for students working on a deadline. I got in touch with people who’d been in touch over the years, who were easy to reach. The students did the interviews. The interviews were a bit awkward because it’s hard to really grasp what it’s like to live in a punkhouse, but that forced the residents to explain their lives in detail in a way that they likely wouldn’t have done with me or Aaron. The interviews were conducted between February and March 2020, with the last ones finished as COVID-19 shut down the country and the university. That’s when Aaron and I started talking about the interviews. A book was never in the thoughts of anyone when this class project began, just a collection of interviews for the archives at the 309 Punk Project and the university. But as we started to read the stories, it became clear something else was here. Aaron and I started bouncing the idea of a book off of each other through letters, stamps and paper and envelopes through the USPS in the spring of 2020. We edited, heavily edited, and in many instances transcribed, the interviews. Less than a year later, we have a book. It’s really a pretty amazing process that likely wouldn’t have happened if not for the pandemic. We had more time on our hands than expected. Having a project did a lot to keep up our spirits, and made us really appreciate our friends even more than before.

With Stephen Pugh on the stage, the Orlando Rep’s one-man Legend of Sleepy Hollow is no Disneyfied take on the classic chiller

If you’ve been following along

with my Halloween adventures this year, you’ve already survived a surfeit of jump scares and your jangled nerves might be jonesing for a seasonal treat that’s a little less jarring, a little more literary. In that case, the Orlando Repertory Theatre (orlandorep.com) is presenting a one-man production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow now through All Hallows’ Eve that promises to immerse audiences in Washington Irving’s classic chiller. But don’t let the family-friendly designation delude you into thinking this is another Disneyfied take on the tale of Ichabod Crane, because this show stars Stephen Pugh, a performer who recently faced down a foe even more frightening than the Headless Horseman: COVID-19. If Pugh’s name isn’t already familiar to you, you haven’t been paying attention. He’s been a fixture on Orlando’s stages since the mid-aughts, from Theatre Downtown to Universal Orlando, including nearly two dozen roles at the Rep. He relocated to Boston for nearly three years, which is where he was hospitalized with a serious case of the coronavirus last year. “It’s been a wonderful recovery from all that. I’m very, very happy that I haven’t had any long-term problems,” Pugh said of his recovery during a recent interview ahead of last Friday’s opening night. “I’m extremely happy and very grateful that [COVID-19] hasn’t ruined anything permanently for me, and being back home working has boosted everything to a better level.” After making a brief return to Orlando in 2019 to star in the Rep’s How I Became a Pirate, Pugh moved back permanently late last year. He recently served as

a teaching artist for the Rep’s summer camps, which he says was “a trip! The kids are so intense and wonderful to mold. … Teach[ing] them all the different tricks of improv or performance space, the extra stuff of theater that these camps provide … it was a really cool experience.” He especially lauds artistic director Jeff Revels and his staff for responsibly organizing socially distanced and face-masked camps and even helping Pugh get his own vaccination. The Rep’s camps also afforded Pugh another opportunity to advocate for presenting Derek G. Martin and Jesse M. Sullivan’s adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which he had previously stepped into for a 2018 production in Plymouth, Massachusetts. “When COVID hit, I kept thinking in the back of my head: It’s a one-man show; this is the safest thing you could do if you’re looking to do theater and still have that distance with the audience, [because] what’s safer than just one person telling a tale?” recalls Pugh. “I knew the Rep could really immerse an audience into the story. They really always made these classic tales bigger and bolder than you would expect.” The show’s script is largely faithful to Irving’s original words, drawing descriptive passages directly from the text, but Pugh says Martin and Sullivan “wanted something a little bit more engaging, so they didn’t over-poeticize the writing.” And while the setting is still in the 1790s, some characters (like the boorish Brom Bones) incorporate just enough modern tweaks “to give the audience and kids a little bit of the stuff they like, so that it really connects with them too.” Filling the Rep’s large, three-quarterthrust Universal Orlando Foundation

Theatre all alone might seem like a daunting challenge for a solo performer, but it’s one Pugh says he’s trained for over his 13-plus-shows in the building, many in that very venue. “I love that stage,” enthuses Pugh. “I love every time I go on how different it is, but how much it’s the same … To be fully immersed with it again, it’s coming home. I feel very comfortable just being my big, loud self.” Although he’s the only live performer on stage in Sleepy Hollow, he’s sharing the spotlight with Cliff Price’s set, Alexandria Vazquez’s costumes, Vandy Wood’s lighting, Sarah Bender Allen’s props, and sound design by Anthony Narciso with Anthony Marshall. It’s all under the direction of Tara Kromer, with whom Pugh previously collaborated on The Giver. Putting aside all the flaming pumpkins and Colonial trappings, what really caught my attention was Pugh’s enthusiasm for an important lesson that today’s audiences can learn from Irving’s long-vanished schoolmaster. “In this version, your first narration is a teacher talking to students about what’s really going on in their town,” says Pugh. “I feel that’s important nowadays, when we’re getting our news from every which way and we don’t know what is real, what’s truth and what’s fiction. Here’s a teacher trying to explain that this is your town’s history, this is what we’re going to need to talk about, because other people don’t want you to hear the other side of what could be real. “I really find that poignant, because it happened back then; it’s happening now; it’s going to keep happening. The next generation is going to have to decide: ‘Do I want to believe this, and is there the evidence to support it?’” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Season Three of You hits Netflix Friday, Oct. 15

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, OCT. 13: Dopesick — Michael Keaton plays Dr. Samuel Finnix, a physician who helps jump-start the opioid epidemic by prescribing OxyContin to his patients. If I were his defense lawyer, my strategy would be to pin it on the Multiverse version of Finnix played by Ben Affleck. (Hulu) Just Beyond — Here’s an eight-episode anthology of tween-targeted scare stories inspired by R.L. Stine. Remember him? He’s the J.K. Rowling you don’t have to regret having grown up on. (Disney+)

PREMIERES THURSDAY, OCT. 14: Censor — The “video nasty” controversy of Thatcher-era England is the foundation for this shocker, in which a censor lands in hot water after a movie she approved inspires a murder. Hey, that’s nothing — Batman got my grandma hooked on painkillers! (Hulu)

Little Ellen Season 1B — In contrast, you have great job security if you’re the voice of a 7-year-old animated Ellen DeGeneres. You can do whatever the hell you want and know that nobody’s going to send you to time-out until you’re 26. (HBO Max) Love Spells (Amarres) — Mexico offers up a supernatural comedy about a witch who searches for love while raising three kids as a single parent. Totally unfair, given that Tabitha Stevens had two whole dads to take advantage of. (HBO Max) The Medium — Horror masters Na Hongjin and Banjong Pisanthanakun team up to show us what kind of hell breaks loose when the powers of a shaman are passed from one generation to another. Wait … this isn’t another Jay Leno project, is it? (Shudder)

PREMIERES FRIDAY, OCT. 15: The Forgotten Battle — The stories of three people on different sides of World War II converge in this Dutch-made dramatization of the Battle of the Scheldt. Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it — your excuse is right there in the title. (Netflix) The Four of Us — Comedy ensues when a quartet of hotties trade partners for a month. And when I say “comedy,” I mean “easily traced STDs.” (Netflix) Good Timing With Jo Firestone — The New York comic teaches 16 senior citizens how to be funny. Hell, I’d be happy if she taught them how to use a turn signal. (Peacock) Karma’s World — From the creative imagination of Chris “Ludacris” Bridges come the animated adventures of a 10-yearold girl rapper. For a peek into the creative imagination of Lil Nas X, check out next spring’s Three Men and DaBaby. (Netflix)

Aquaman: King of Atlantis — Aquaman, on the other hand, just gives you a hankering for brine shrimp. Or at least I’d expect something no less wacky from this lighthearted animated series that’s arriving between the character’s theatrical features. None of the live-action cast provides voices, but cut Amber Heard a break: She’s a busy woman with careers to destroy. (HBO Max)

The Missing (Os Ausentes) — If you’re in Brazil and someone close to you has disappeared, where do you turn for help? To the two private investigators who are the stars of this drama series. Oh, and each of them is also on the hunt for a missing loved one — which qualifies them as experts in their field if the show lasts one season, but really lousy at their jobs if it goes for five. (HBO Max)

Little Things — The fourth and final season of the Indian romcom finds paramours Dhruv and Kayya pondering a new level of commitment after six years together. Wait a minute: six years but only four seasons? Sounds like somebody spent some time dallying with the cast of The Four of Us. (Netflix)

The Kids Tonight Show — Imagine the pitfalls of being one of the four young co-hosts of this spinoff from the most influential talk show of all time: If you’re bad, your parents take it away; if you’re good, Jay Leno takes it away! (Peacock)

Phoebe Robinson: Sorry, Harriet Tubman — The comic, actress and author shares her thoughts on everything from interracial relationships to Michelle Obama. “Same thing!” says Candace Owens. “Shut the hell up!” says everybody else. (HBO Max)

You — Stalker Joe Goldberg enters his third season as a married dad, but with an enticing neighbor to bring out his old habits. Must be nice; all my neighbor brings out is the homeowners’ association whenever I have Ludacris over. (Netflix) orlandoweekly.com

In the music scene, it doesn’t get any more Orlando than rap champion Swamburger. But the MC-producer actually has roots in Chicago, and he’s made something of a return to that in his brand new single. A nod to Chi-town’s seminal dance music heritage, “All Hail Open Doors” rides a jazzed-up house stomp rather than the classic hip-hop template that Swam usually employs. With lush vibes from Gerry Williams’ keyboards, Ty Gasek’s saxophone and Scarlet Monk’s silky singing, it’s a stylish slice of hip-house that’s built for smart lounging. It’s streaming now on major platforms. This single’s also a circle back to Swamburger’s Orlando roots. Juan Mejia (aka DJ Fathead) was part of an Orlando crew that first put Swam on a mic in this city at their regular hip-hop nights in the Den at Firestone during the late 1990s, even producing some of his early material. The rest, of course, is some defining Orlando music history. Fast-forward a couple decades and Mejia now runs Miami-based deep-house label Dutchie Music, under whose umbrella “All Hail Open Doors” was just released. As interesting as this history is, though, it’s the future that makes the reconnection of these two figures especially momentous. The release of this single marks the beginning of a significant new chapter for Swamburger. More than just another song, it’s the launch of an ambitious relationship that will provide Swamburger with some new direction and platform. “All Hail Open Doors” is the first peek at his upcoming full-length solo album, slated to drop in December. “MIND THE GAP” Thirty-year-old trans woman here, Dan, and I have a question about what is surely one of your favorite subjects: the “age gap discourse.” About four years ago, I had a sexual experience that I go back and forth on whether to label as sexual assault. When I was 26 years old, I met a 19-year-old on a dating site and drove to a neighboring state to hook up with them. I’ll spare you the details, but when started doing things we had mutually agreed upon, one of them didn’t feel right in the moment, so I withdrew my consent. They respected my boundary for about 15 minutes, then tried it again. I said no again, they refrained for another 15 minutes, then tried it again. The cycle continued until I just got worn down. The night ended with me trying to fall asleep so I at least wouldn’t be conscious for what they were going to do. It didn’t work. I’m friends with a lot of social-justicefocused millennials, and as such, discourse about age gaps in romantic and sexual relationships occasionally appear on my social media. The consensus, as I understand it, seems to be that there is a vast maturity gap between someone who is 19 and someone who is 26; therefore, someone in their mid20s has an affirmative duty to make sure nothing sexual happens with someone who is 19. It is also suggested that someone like me is a creep and a predator for even thinking about hooking up with a 19-year-old. It’s hard to not apply my own experience to the discourse, and boy, is it a mind fuck. Hearing people go on about how vulnerable teenagers are or how I occupied a position of power not only dredges up painful memories, but also makes me feel like a creep. Did I do something wrong? I’m leaning toward no. I didn’t have any institutional power over the other person, it wasn’t an ongoing relationship, nor is it a pattern of behavior. (Like hell am I going to trust a 19-year-old again.) I also tried to follow your campsite rule. Instead of ghosting them, I sent them a message explaining why I wasn’t going to play with them again — the boundary violations — in the hope that they would do better in the future. I’m about 80% sure I have nothing to feel guilty about, but that other 20% just won’t shut up. Was I the bad guy here? Am Getting Exasperated “I feel for this woman and, it should go without saying, she shouldn’t feel guilty about having been sexually assaulted,” says James Greig, a London-based writer whose work has appeared in the Guardian, Vice and other publications. “And to my mind, this incident shows that things are often more complex than the online ‘age gap discourse’ acknowledges.”

Greig has written about the online age gap discourse for the Guardian, AGE, and while he feels the conversation is motivated by legitimate concerns about unequal power dynamics and their potential for abuse and exploitation, he worries the black-and-white nature of the discourse can lull people into a false sense of security. “People imagine that abuse is less likely to occur in relationships where both parties are the same age,” Greig says, “and in my experience, that’s not always the case.” Additionally, condemnations of relationships and/or hook-ups with significant age gaps — the kind of puritanical “discourse” that has left you feeling so isolated — often fails to acknowledge, much less grapple with, factors besides age that can make a person vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. “Being a trans woman in itself can make you more vulnerable,” Greig says. And some people don’t understand that only yes means yes, that no absolutely means no, and that withdrawal of consent doesn’t mean “Ask me again in five minutes.” Sometimes a person guilty of the kind of consent/boundary/physical violation you endured isn’t acting maliciously and is capable of learning from their mistakes — here’s hoping that message you sent that 19-yearold had an impact — but some people know what they’re doing when they pressure a person to engage in (or submit to) unwanted sexual acts and don’t care. Those people can be 19 and those people can be 99, AGE, and their victims can be younger or older. And if their last name is Trump, those people can be POTUS. “Life is too complicated for one-size-fitsall prescriptions like ‘age gap relationships are bad’ to be of much use,” Greig says, “and that means we have to take these things on a case-by-case basis.” And in your case, AGE, neither of us think you were the bad guy. All that said, AGE, driving to a neighboring state to hook up with a teenager … yeah, the optics aren’t good, and a lot of people aren’t gonna be able to see past them. But just because some very online people will look at your respective ages at the time, do the math, and label you a predator, you aren’t obligated to slap that label on yourself. You were consenting adults until you withdrew your consent, at which point you were the victim of a sexual assault. You may have to be selective with whom you confide in about this, but you don’t have to shame yourself. You lived, you learned, you’ve tried to do better. Here’s hoping the other person — now in their 20s — learned something too and has also tried to do better. Forty-something straight man here, and I like shaving. My wife, to whom I’ve been

married 16 years, doesn’t. So I shave myself and she’s natural. She let me shave her once, she didn’t like the result, and we’ve never done it again. But last week while she was amusing herself down below, we were chatting (she’s talented, I tell you) and she noted that she’s not crazy about my shaved parts. She said it reminded her of prepubescent boys. Similarly, she worries guys who like it are thinking of little girls. Also, the potential for nicks and cuts makes her queasy. For my part, I like the way the skin feels and it makes me look bigger. And so much porn is shaved these days that this is probably in the back of my mind. Writing you this letter has been good therapy, Dan. Rereading it just now I can see a workable solution: two months on (shaved), two months off (natural). Am I the first letter writer who solved his own problem? Shaving Nuts Is Promising P.S. If you have anything to add, come right out and say it — no need to beat around the bush. You’re not the first person who solved their own problem by the time they finished writing their letter — hell, half the questions I get are from people who already know what they need to do. They need to DTMFA or get into therapy or learn to tie knots — and they write in hoping I’ll give them a little push, SNIP, which I’m always happy to do. P.S. Sexually active, fully grown adult men and women have been shaving off their pubes for decades now — we’re well into the third decade of the modern pubic-hair-shaving discourse — and I’m losing my patience with people who claim they dislike hairless crotches because they associate them with prepubescent children. Unless you’re currently parenting a prepubescent child or you’re a pediatrician, you are far likelier to see fully grown adult humans with hairless crotches than prepubescent children. Really, people. Think about the last hundred hairless crotches you saw — were those children or were they adult sex partners and/or porn stars? When I see an adult man with a hairless crotch in gay porn, I don’t think, “THAT MAN WITH THE ROCK-HARD EIGHT-INCH DICK LOOKS LIKE A WEE BOY!” It’s fine to prefer partners with pubes but a person should be able to express that preference without insinuating that people who prefer shaved crotches are pedophiles. An adult man who shaves his face is not trying to look like a child and does not look like a child. A woman who shaves her pits is not trying to look like a child and does not look like a child. Same goes for adult men and women who shave their pubes. Sheesh. questions@savagelove.net orlandoweekly.com

Meet Rascal! Rascal (A473157) is an 8-yearold male who has been at the shelter for over 128 days. Rascal has been selective with the dogs that he has interacted with at the shelter, but it appears he may be coming around — he has shown improvement. We do recommend slow introductions if there are other dogs in the new home he goes to for a successful second chance. He has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and is ready to go home the day he is adopted. Please help us find Rascal his new furrever home!! During the month of October, adoption fees will be the standard $55 for dogs and $40 for cats. Adopters can receive additional Trick-or-Treat discounts from the front desk at our “Pumpkin Patch,” where they can find discounts of $5, $10, $15, $20 or a box of treats for their new pet. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving with their new families. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com. OCT. 13-19, 2021 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY
