From Me To You... I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer?

So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak. We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab. Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable. Not only does he train us twice a week, he also helps with food choices and motivation. I am not

a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat. A lot. Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy. Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer.

Peace On Earth Rewire Your Brain

“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8) A recent daily devotion from the Upper Room really spoke to me and I want to share. Joanie Shawhan wrote that she was diagnosed with a floater on her eyes – a black spidery blob that floated on her eyeball obstructing the light. Her eye doctor cautioned her not to focus her gaze on the floater. Doing so causes the nerve impulses to be directed toward it, further distorting her vision. The brain is wired to strengthen what we focus on. Do you suppose that is why scripture repeatedly encourages us to think about positive things? When we focus on our grievances, our failures, our problems, it’s like the nerve impulses are directed toward these things distorting our vision of the full picture. We become blind to God’s blessings. We miss the gestures of kindness, the caring words, the reassurances, the smiles of others. We lose hope because we focus on the problem and not the God who restores us.

situation? What is taking your attention away from focusing on the One who heals and redeems and wraps us in arms of grace?

Yes, there are problems in this world. Serious problems. The media focuses on these problems. They are encouraged to do so because “bad news sells.” How unfortunate. I’d sure like some balance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the media gave equal exposure to the stories of compassion, people helping one another and forgiving one another? However, it isn’t the media’s job to make us feel better. It’s really our job to balance our exposure to the negative with a greater focus on the positive. It is our job to notice the good and dwell on it, give thanks for it and imitate it. Our brains are so wired to search out the negative, that we tend to gravitate to those sights, those posts, those conversations. However, we can rewire our brains. We can choose to change our focus. Let’s notice both the good in ourselves and in others. It is our job to encourage others, notice kindnesses, say thank you and build others up. And when we do, our nerve impulses are directed toward goodness. Suddenly our challenges are put into new perspective. And that is a perspective that I want. I pray you know this perspective too! Being a mom can be tough work and at times stressful. In Vistancia, we have a great organization that can be a tremendous support system for all moms. Their mission is to work with and support moms within the community and provides a safe and fun way to connect with other moms. The groups MOMS stands for Moms Offering Moms Support and they do just that and more. It is an international non-profit organization and they support all moms of all ages and backgrounds. The Vistancia MOMS group is comprised of about 60 moms and their kids. They meet regularly for play-dates, which is a great way to get to know other moms in your community and to allow for your kids interaction with other little ones. The play-dates consist of various activities such as crafts, playground

meet-ups, food and games and special trips to various parts of the city. They have previously attended outings at the police and fire stations, local farms and many other venues. Virginia Cornelius, vice president of administration for the Vistancia MOMS Club has let us know that they are planning many other fun outings to places like Skyzone and Jumpstreet. While these play-dates and outings are a great time and serve a valuable purpose, the MOMS Club also focuses on assisting the community when in need. The Helping Hands Committee of the MOMS Club is focused on raising funds to help local families in need. They have historically used these funds to assist with things like gifts for the holidays for single moms who could use the assistance. In addition to their charitable focus, the group also focuses on support for the local elementary schools by supporting teachers, providing gifts and treats for teacher appreciation week. If you are a mom in the Vistancia area and are looking for a group to be a part of and connect with other moms, make new friends and get more involved in your community you can e-mail the MOMS Club at vistanciamomsclubevents@gmail. com or visit vistanciamomsclub.com.

Positive Parenting People often talk about a healthy work/life balance but it’s important for parents to realize that kids need balance too. Some students prioritize academics at the expense of personal factors, including relationships and exercise. As parents, it’s important to know that this can lead to a decline in academic performance, as general health and well-being are critical to success. Tips for Helping Your Child Manage a Healthy School/Life Balance: The first step to a healthy balance is time management as this is key to academic and home life success. To set your kids on the right path to success, do the following: • Help your children plan their schedule. • Show your children the benefits of making a weekly to-do list. • Help your children prioritize their work. • Encourage your children to break large tasks into smaller ones so they can celebrate accomplishments along the way. • Help your child set goals and deadlines for projects. • Teach them to avoid perfectionism and let them know it’s ok to be themselves. Studies have shown that perfectionist attitudes actually interfere with success by leading to: o Low self-esteem o Anxiety o Depression o Guilt o Rigidity o Lack of motivation o Procrastination o Obsessive/compulsive behaviors o Eating disorders o Relationship problems In addition, it’s important to help your children set 10 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

healthy habits that will set them up for success in the future. Tell your children it’s encouraged and ok to:

• Be where you are. Don’t worry about what you aren’t doing. Stay focused on the task at hand— don’t worry about other things when you’re in class or studying, and don’t let other things, work or school interfere with spending quality time with family and friends. • Set a schedule for the week and get organized. Plan segments of time for study, family, exercise, and other tasks that need to get done. Experiment with the best times for you to study and how frequently you need breaks. Also, figure out the best place to study where all of your materials are accessible and you can truly focus. • Reward yourself. You should plan a reward for sticking to your schedule or completing your work before a deadline. • Remember that you are only human. Nothing will get done well if you are emotionally or physically drained. Plan exercise and creative activities into your week to help keep you energized. • Use your support system. Discuss your expectations for school with your family and friends. Inform them about your schedule so that they know when you can’t be disturbed and when they can expect your full attention. Negotiate household duties based on your schedule. • Don’t focus on getting straight A’s. Your child’s focus should be on learning. • Have some fun. Make time to enjoy friends and family; watch a movie; or read non-academic books. Parenting is hard. Be sure to celebrate the small things and acknowledge when your child is maintaining a well-balanced life at home and school. Furry Friends As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun:

Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash. Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement. * Start with a simple accessory, like a bandana, working your way up to a costume. * Make sure costumes include eye and ear holes, and if they don’t, consider removing whole portions of the costume to ensure your pet’s ability to see, hear and breathe. Make sure there isn’t anything that could be a tripping hazard. Also, be sure to check the 14 Estrella Publishing - Mountain View magazine

costume for little parts within biting or chewing distance. * Dogs can overheat easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. * In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level. “It’s fun to include our pets in our celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: * Xylitol a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. * Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. * Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. * Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. * As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl. Find more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween at PetSmart.com. October 2018

Medicare Part D Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, so now is the time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2019.

Deductible, copay and coinsurance A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan’s coverage kicks in. The deductible can vary from plan to plan. Some plans charge a copay, a flat fee, each time you fill a prescription. For example, a plan may require you to pay $2 when you fill a prescription for generic drugs and a higher amount for brandname drugs. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay. Formulary Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what’s known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan.

Preferred pharmacy network A Part D plan may designate a preferred network of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions.

The donut hole The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a “donut hole.” For example, in 2019, you enter this donut hole once your outof-pocket costs for prescription drugs reach $3,820. While you’re in the donut hole, you will pay a percentage of the cost of the drugs. In 2019, once your out-of-pocket costs reach $5,100, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. But, the days of the donut hole are numbered. Beginning in 2019, the maximum you will pay in the coverage gap for a branded drug is 25 percent of a drug’s cost. For generic drugs, it is 37 percent, but in 2020, that will be reduced to 25 percent as well. To learn more about Medicare or Medicare Annual Enrollment, visit UHCOpenEnrollment. com.

“When considering a Part D plan, review the formulary to make sure your medications are covered,” said Kent Monical, of UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. And keep in mind that plan formularies can change from year to year, so don’t assume that the drugs covered under your current plan will carry over in 2019. Drug tiers A Medicare Part D plan’s formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. So, talk to your doctor to see if you can take a generic version. Home Sweet Home

Did you know that many police departments have a community affairs officer whose primary goal is to build a strong working relationship with the community? That means you have access to a trained safety expert who wants to give you ideas to keep your home and neighborhood safe. Read on for simple home security hacks from a recent home safety evaluation conducted by a police officer. 1. Change the locks When was the last time you changed the locks? How many previous owners have there been and how many keys have been given out to neighbors, friends, family or delivery people? You never know who has a second copy, and for less than $100 at Home Depot, you can change your locks immediately. 2. Replace outdoor lightbulbs If you don’t have outdoor flood lights, get them. If you have them, make sure the bulbs are in working order.

3. Place an alarm sign in your yard Many wouldbe thieves won’t approach a house if they think it has an alarm. You can get an alarm sign online. 4. Buy an indoor camera Cameras can capture a suspect in the act and let homeowners check the footage from anywhere. FunLux indoor cameras offer high-quality images and night vision, and they’re motion activated and affordable. You can get them on Amazon for about $25 each. 5. Get out the garden shears Every bush outside of your windows should be below the window line, usually 2-3 feet in height, to maximize your visibility from the inside of your house to the outside, so that means you must trim your bushes. You can get garden shears at your local hardware store for $15. 6. Bake some cookies One of the best ways to stay safe is to work together as a neighborhood. We all need to keep an eye on each other and what better way to start that relationship than with a plate of cookies? 7. Protect your neighborhood There are many measures you can take to improve your community safety, with varying levels of affordability. Outdoor security cameras, can reduce crime and prevent would-be criminals from entering the neighborhood. 8. Ask for a security survey Officers will walk around your house, inside and out, to assess its safety and could reveal some surprising tips. They want to help, and they are motivated to solve and prevent crime. For more information on keeping your home and neighborhood secure, visit www.flocksafety.com/ securityhacks.

Support Group Support Groups Available for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Parenting isn’t easy, especially the second time around. Grandparents or relatives who find themselves in the unexpected position of raising their grandchildren or kin face complex situations. Through the help of these supportive services though, grandparents can balance the challenges of a new family dynamic and thrive.

at the Duet office, 10000 North 31st Avenue, Suite D200, every second and fourth Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. “Many of the families in this situation are in distress. Emotions are high and they’re confused as to what’s happening,” Patricia Dominguez, MSW, director of kinship care services for Duet says. “Duet is that lifeline to making sense of their situation and providing hope.”

Local nonprofit Duet offers support for grandparents raising grandchildren through freeof-charge support groups, legal guidance and assistance, funds for extracurricular activities, information and guided assistance, educational workshops, and outings. The organization also offers West Valley monthly support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren and other kinship (relative) caregivers.

In addition to support groups, Duet offers a variety of other resources not only for West Valley grandparents raising grandchildren, but also for grandparents across Maricopa County. Added to helping grandparents and kinship caregivers, Duet also promotes health and well-being through its vitally needed, free-of-charge services to homebound adults, family caregivers, and faith communities.

“I encourage all grandparents raising their grandchildren to get involved in support groups and utilize every resource available,” says West Valley grandparent Joseph Yanez, who is raising two teenage grandsons. “It will have an amazing impact on your life if you speak and share about your issues. There are others in the same boat willing to listen.”
